You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

Going back to Coral Gate, to reclaim Lightmare and check on the Salt Court, you made some unpleasant discoveries.

You found that the entire Salt Court, 'King' Trevor as well, had vanished. The scene being remade into looking as if there was no one there in the first place.

You also discovered a secret message left for you. It was from Jessi, one of Robin Goodfellow's partners. They had been captured by the Dramatae, had masks forced upon them, and were now being forced to work for them.

What was worse was that, while Jessi was securing the Salt Queens, and Robin was aiding the main assault on First Wood, the note said that Ryan was orchestrating an attack on the returning mer army.

You rushed to what you thought was one of the most likely ambush spots and you were correct. You managed to stop masked hunters from capturing or corrupting the rest of the mer army.

Unfortunately, the REASON that was the LAST of the mer army was that Ryan had set up a triple staged ambush. With hunters all along the coast line, picking off the mer as they traveled back to their home. You had just managed to stop the last group.

This was a problem. The Dramatae had finally replaced their numbers with people who were smart, creative, and very competent. What was worse was that you considered them friends, too.
>>
You traveled to White Tree, hoping to find some clues at the Conclave, and to collect the Woodsman's Compass that Jessi's message said that you needed in order to reach the Dramatae's Grove. What you found was a teleport seal, one that took you to an underground 'thought laboratory' that belonged to Rage. You found his old plans for the Lightbringers, records of his actions, and a journal detailing his decision to turn upon the Dramatae, and how by involving you would cause things to change.

A little spying revealed that Rage's apartment was below the Holting manor. Lord Holting, along with being the last descendent of the Bear Tribe, was a powerful grain baron of the Citadel Kingdom. His house was full of servants, petitioners, guests, and a lavish treasure room that held the Woodsman's compass you were looking for...as well as a metallic Tragedy mask.
>>
Right we need to get up there. Secret passages. Stealh, something. Someone should also stay down here and flip through Rage's notes. They should look for the True Names of the Dramatae for spell reversal as well as anything else of use.
>>
Ah, hello again echo.

So, what is our order of priorities for today?

We want that mask, we need to save julian and the other captives, free white tree, warn granny the dramatae know about her, find a compass, meet? lord holting, and if possible, hug some little lamia sisters. Probably a lot I'm forgetting.
>>
>>24827729
we could come back when it's night time and people are sleeping.

Or we could contact lord holting directly and play some kind of crazy diplomacy cat/mouse game.
>>
Hey Echo, 47 threads later and I've finally caught up with the reading, I saw your quest and thought i'd have a look at it from the beginning, and I got sucked in completely! This quest is amazing and you should feel proud man.

Anyways, first time contributing to a thread so.... are there any insects strong enough to say... lift the mask and move it at all? If so, we might be able to use that to our advantage (a group of ants can be SO strong together).
>>
>>24827760
if we are going to wait till night time we should spend that time going over Rage's notes. I doubt anyone is going to come down here.
>>
>>24827829
I considered that, but what kind of self respecting maid wouldn't notice and annihilate ants carrying a mask?

With surgical cleaning precision.
>>
>>24827729
"Right we need to get up there. Secret passages. Stealh, something. Someone should also stay down here and flip through Rage's notes. They should look for the True Names of the Dramatae for spell reversal as well as anything else of use." You say.

"Maybe we should wait until late night." Peri says. "House will be quieted down, less chance of us running into servants."

Mari shakes her head. "Higher risk of Holting showing up, we know the masks give powers. I don't want to know what a full Dramatae mask can do. Also, it's a typical weakness of security that they get weaker during daylight hours. Because no one thinks that someone's going to try and break into a treasure display room in the middle of the day."

"Holting may not be here for a while." Peri says.

"Those teleport spheres that Tricia saw negate that possibility." Mari says.

"So...what? We just charge in, swords drawn, spells blasting?" Mage says.

Mari shakes her head. "No, someone would call for help. Holting's probably got warning spells, or ways to contact him."

"Then what?" Tricia says.

Mari shrugs. "I'm working on it. Give me a bit, I'm open for ideas."
>>
>>24827864
what do we want to look for then? These are all quite old. Also things like peace's location have probably been destroyed out of here.
>>
>>24827872
Well we don't necessarily have to bring them to us... maybe just stash them somewhere for us, somewhere where, when we make a surprise visit later on today or something along those lines (on behalf of the Old one, or some such thing), we can snag it.
>>
>>24827964
Peace isn't imaginitive and they haven't had to worry about operational security for Seven Ages.

>>24827947
Then our best bet is to take any secret passages we can find or take the less travelled routes. A place this size can't have a maid in every corridor.
>>
>>24827947
Man, why do all these wonderful opportunities have to be stymied by maids and junk?

We'd have to teleport back, get on our horse, and RIDE here if we wanted to talk to them, right? They'd get suspicious if we came out of the basement all howdy doo?

Well, we could try to sneak it, but that would almost certainly fail and start combat.
>>
>>24828008
Hmm. That has some merit. Where would we be able to get into on a legal-not-inspection? Since an actual warrant requires two paladins, if I remember cita-law correctly.
>>
>>24828076
I'm not sure, it might be good to see if Tricia can scout out some little hidey-holes for the mask first though, before we think the rest through. But the big idea is that if he thinks it's stolen, he won't think to look in his own house for it. We'd have to make sure no maids etc could stumble on it though

"Well, we could try to bust in on an inspection, but I'm not entirely sure on the legality of that. Do you have a count on how many maids there are, Tricia? Also, is there any way we could create a distraction to get them out of the area?"

Dear god I hope these aren't the other kind of maid.
>>
>>24828042
"I doubt Rage cleaned up after himself." You say. "And this place can't have a maid in every corridor." You look at Mari. "Secret passages?"

"No..." Mari says. "But there might be servant passages."

"Aren't those the same thing?" Lea says.

Mari waves her off.

"Rage was a really bizarre human being." Mage says, still working through his journals. "He doesn't so much as acknowledge the mansion, just referring it at to the Background Noise. This is his storage space...and the mansion he lives in...if I'm reading this right, is the 'Mansion of his mind.' Wow." Mage shakes his head. "The only other person he acknowledges as existing, apart from Peace, is his daughter...and he just refers to her as 'loyal staff, due to her biological tethers to myself, her capability and trust are of higher variances than others. I admit I find myself valuing her functions as well. She is efficient and professional." Mage says. "How touching...in a cold, weird, way."
>>
>>24827947
If there was a window in that room could Tricia use her insects to open it and carry the items out?
>>
Oh, this is when we discover that it's just a masquerade mask, and not the ACTUAL Tragedy mask, isn't it?

Calling it now.

Guys, I have a plan that's stupid as hell.

We could have mage try to palatte-swap Ssen with the camo spell, take her armor off so she looks like a wild lamia, and have her scare the servants away. If they are servants and not bodyguards. And no meddling kids show up.
>>
>>24828288
That is a terrible plan, not even Dawnchaser terrible, just terrible terrible.
>>
>>24828288
That still means a warning gets out and reinforcements come to kick our ass.

>>24828220
Considering Mari/Peri is the most "normal" of us, maybe she can try and steal a servant uniform and scout out for those passages.
>>
>>24828220
"Do the servants use the passages all the time, or only when there are nobles to stay out of the sight of?"
>>
>>24828288
Hmmmm.... only if we burst in through the front door... But... if we go with >>24828008, we could cause a distraction for the moving of the mask.... hmmmm... Personally, I'm not sure if we should risk something like that, but I suppose we COULD use that effectively. Still, I doubt the Dramatae will fall for it if they hear of it (which they will).
>>
>>24828160
"Well, we could try to bust in on an inspection, but I'm not entirely sure on the legality of that. Do you have a count on how many maids there are, Tricia? Also, is there any way we could create a distraction to get them out of the area? Any place you could stash the mask? A window?"

"Well, even if I could get the mask up to that window, the mask is inside a glass display case. I guess so people just think it's another one of Holting's treasures." Tricia says. "I can't get at it."

"As for staff...give me a bit." She concentrates. "30...at least." She shrugs. "They have a board full of names and tokens to show who's in, out, and if they're assigned attending to a guest. There could be more...but I see thirty."
>>
>>24828288
I'd imagine Tragedy also has some guards in addition to the servants, so not sure that would work.
>>
>>24828321
"Do the servants use the passages all the time, or only when there are nobles to stay out of the sight of?"

"That, or when they need to get from point A to Point B quicker than the usual way." Mari says.

Lea's already been searching the walls. "They wouldn't be too hidden would they?"

"Discreet, not hidden. Look for distinctive paneling in the walls." She shrugs. "I'm just going by what was at my house."

"You had servants?" Peri asks.

"Just two...I think they were let go after the poisoning incident." Mari frowns. "I hope they ended up okay."

"You cared for them?" Lea asks.

Mari shrugs. "They were servants. They have their place, and I had mine. I was polite to them...usually." She sighs. "I could have been nicer, but I never went out of my way to make their lives a misery."
>>
>>24828331
What about scaling the building from the outside? Would Peri be able to do that?
>>
>>24828331
Thirty servants who are most likely entirely innocent and have perfectly legitimate reasons to defend their homestead. Not to mention whatever magical warning systems these dramatae have. Great.

So, to counteract the magic detection, we can use Ssen's eyes to see where the trip is and avoid it heist-laser-grid style. To counteract the staff, I dunno. Send only one person using the stalking spell? Perhaps mage rides Ssen and refreshes the spell/applies sleep spells to servants as necessary?
>>
>>24828331
Actually describe the mask and see if it looks like the one Tragedy wears. I mean if its is power source then why in the name of the gods would he just leave it out in the open when it is not in use?
>>
>>24828444
well, it IS in his study, the place you display your treasures if you are rich and have guards.
>>
>>24828472
But is it the REAL one? If it was my source of ULTIMATE BULLSHIT POWAHS, i know i wouldn't just leave it out there.
>>
>>24828498
The Dramate arn't exactly bright.
>>
>>24828498
the only way to tell, really, would be to get mage or ssen to it to look at it. And maybe doing something clever with our lantern coin.

Rubbing it on the mask?
>>
Well, whatever happens, we need to get into the room somehow. How strong is our acid? What rooms are adjacent to the room we're after?
>>
Okay. fact one: Mage can weldcut through lantern metal, as per the compass.

Rumored fact two: A piece of the dramatae mask can uncorrupt lantern metal. Possible if smelted together.

Which means that we can test if it's the real mask by chipping some of it off and melting it together with a lantern coin.
>>
>>24828414
"What about scaling the building from the outside? Would you be able to do that, Peri?"

Peri shrugs. "Maybe...but first we need to get outside." She gestures. There aren't any windows in Rage's lair. The light comes from small spheres filled with that same luminous fungus they have in Bronze Peak.

"Are we sure that's the same mask?" You ask Tricia. "I doubt Tragedy would go far without it."

Tricia shrugs. "I've never met Tragedy. I'm just telling you what I'm seeing. It's a metal mask in the classic tragedy shape."

"Ah!" Lea says as part of the wall in Rage's sleeping quarters swings open. "Found it." She brushes away some cobwebs. "Looks unused."
>>
>>24828587
Following this logic, we only need to steal a small portion of the mask. If we weren't noticed on the way in, and weren't noticed on the way out, it could be several hours before anyone noticed anything was wrong with the mask.
>>
>>24828615
good job. Lets see where it leads.

>>24828627
part of why we want to steal it is to deny the Dramatae its powers.
>>
>>24828615
"Marvelous, we have a path. Tricia, could you keep a fly on the wall ahead of us, so that we can avoid any servants who might be coming our way?"

while we're walking
"Servants, huh, Mari? Wow. Were you just wealthy, or am I in the presence of a genuine noble?"
>>
Why does part of me want to start up a small terror campaign against the people of the house... sneak around passages, scraping our claws against the walls, or otherwise making creepy noises?
>>
>>24828615
"Well, we don't have any better ideas. Tricia, would you mind looking ahead for us so we don't accidentally run straight into some unlucky servant without warning?"
>>
>>24828780
because that would be quite fun if we pulled it off. maybe we'll do it on the way out if this specific set of servant's entrances are entirely forgotten, so as to blame the mask theft on ghosts.
>>
>>24828780
That would take WAY too much time to successfully pull off. We need to secure The Mask at all costs.
>>
>>24828730
"Marvelous, we have a path. Let's see where it leads. Tricia, could you keep a fly on the wall ahead of us, so that we can avoid any servants who might be coming our way?"

Tricia nods and a few flies come out of her sleeve. She holds up her hand. One of her fingers on her left hand is now skeletal. She frowns.

"That's never going to be not creepy." Mage says.

Tricia sighs. "I know." She adjusts her robes so her hand is hidden. "Can we no make a big thing about this?"

Mage nods. "Ssen is a Lamia. Mari/Peri are almost a lich. I'm a Ghoul. And Lea's...okay, she's the normal one." He squeezes Tricia's shoulder. "Creepy's no big deal for us."

"Thanks Mage." Tricia says. "You know, I'm not saying that your new haircut is bad, but were my cuts really THAT bad?"

"Yes." Lea, Mari, and Pari say at once.

The passage has really obviously been unused for a while. It's straight, and leads to a flight for stairs.

"Servants, huh, Mari? Wow. Were you just wealthy, or am I in the presence of a genuine noble?" You ask.

"Mostly rich." Mari says. "I think Grandma might have been slightly related to nobility. Dad was nouveau riche. Granny never liked him...or mom...but she was fond of me." She rolls her eyes. "I think she was just glad to have a new body waiting for her."

"How long has she been doing that?" Lea asks.

"You know." Tricia says. "Trivalon was so calm before we said he fucked up, his story about a new Overseer 'replacing' him...you think this is what the Dramatae do to useful people they want to keep around?" She holds up a hand. "Okay...other side of this door is a hallway. There's plenty of other doors with labels. I just saw one servant go through."

"Central traverse." Mari says. "It's for the big ones. These are the passages that lead all over the house."
>>
Well, it'd be fun to do on the way out, just scrape out claws on the walls, and just spout gibberish in our lizardspeak.

Also, perhaps we should do something to the other end of the teleport when we come out, just to make sure nobody tries to come back this way?
>>
>>24828950
Is there a door that leads directly to the treasure stash? If so, how many guards are on it?
>>
>>24828802
And then at the end, we step out of the passages and reveal...the monsters were real all along!

"It was really Paladin Serpent!"
"And your master would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for us meddling paladins!"
>>
>>24828950
"Hmmm... what way do the doors swing? "
>>
>>24829017
"Is there a door that leads directly to the treasure stash?" You ask.

"Kinda. The display room is in Holting's master study. But it's a separate room with a large locked door protecting it." Tricia says. "Ugh...all these eyes at once is giving me a headache...anyway...yeah there is a passage to his study."

"Which way do the doors swing?" You ask Lea. "Outward, into the traverse room."
>>
>>24829077
"Hmm...Mage, you got any spells to shape wood, for example into convenient doorstops? If they all swing into the traverse, you could block the doors from opening, and since they'd all be on the hallway side, the servants wouldn't even know what was blocking them."
>>
>>24829169
"Hmm...Mage, you got any spells to shape wood, for example into convenient doorstops? If they all swing into the traverse, you could block the doors from opening, and since they'd all be on the hallway side, the servants wouldn't even know what was blocking them."

"Thought you said you'd ease up on the requests?" Mage says. He's smiling as he says it. "Yeah...I could warp the wood a little. That's easy enough to do, and would jam the doors a bit." He says. "Anything more and...well...it's risky."
>>
>>24828950
Risky? How so?
>>
>>24829298
"Jam should hopefully be enough. If we move fast, we could be through before they think of bringing any real power to bear against the doors; hell, there might not even be anyone trying to move through the traverse while we're there if luck's on our side, this is just insurance."
>>
Before we go barging into heavily trafficked areas, perhaps we should get Tricia to see how many bugs she can contact in the area? Holting is a grain baron and landowner, right? Complacent or unsanitary farming practices could lead to huge pest populations nearby, especially if they're relying on Citadel's power to keep the problem in check. It wouldn't be the first time.

If they do have a lot of food nearby, I imagine there would be a lot of moths and flies nearby, and the spiders that prey on them. They wouldn't have to be the dangerous kind, and Tricia wouldn't even need to keep perfect control over them. Just bring as many swarms of any of those into the mansion as possible and it would drive everyone sqeamish (AKA everyone from Citadel) outside rather quickly.
>>
>>24829077
"Tricia, headaches means you're probably overexerting. We have enough layout, I think. Bring back everyone but the flies in front of us why not?"
>>
>>24829369
Thing is, that might send them through the corridors we're currently in. Probably would've been better timed to execute that before we left the study. We can see what the others think though.
>>
>>24829429
"Tricia, headaches means you're probably overexerting. We have enough layout, I think. Bring back everyone but the flies in front of us why not?"

Tricia nods and gestures. She relaxes a little. "Ugh. I need practice for that."

You look at Mage.

"Jamming the doors should hopefully be enough. If we move fast, we could be through before they think of bringing any real power to bear against the doors; hell, there might not even be anyone trying to move through the traverse while we're there if luck's on our side, this is just insurance."

Mag nods.

"Ready?" Lea asks.

Tricia concentrates. "I don't see or hear anyone coming."
>>
So: We jam these main doors, move as quickly as possible to the study, get into the display room, get the case unlocked, and then book it.

That's the plan?
>>
>>24829623
Seems that way.
>>
>>24829636
do we want to make sure we know how the teleporter works first, or are we just goin'?
>>
>>24829661
Is there any way to find out before going?
>>
>>24829669
We could test the route between white tree and here, if we really wanted. We've not tripped any sentries yet.
>>
>>24829669
>Is there any way to find out before going?

You can always go back to Rage's quarters and spend time looking over his notes.
>>
>>24829699
would take quite a while proceed with the plan. Even if the Mask proves fake we'll at least get the compass we need.
>>
>>24829699
Yeah. So the choice is go back and secure escape route and then do plan, or do plan and wing escape route with bonuses for not-waiting-for-things-to-go-even-wronger.

Both of these options are tempting.
>>
>>24829715
yes. Compass is the primary objective. And it's in that treasure room too, if I understand reports correctly.

Anyone care about checking the way out, or are we going to just keep going? Because it will probably work, and checking is mostly paranoia.
>>
>>24829896
It'll be fine. Rage wouldn't dare risk stranding himself and risking having to interact with /people/ to leave.
>>
>>24829939
Okay, time for gamefaces. We're going to CERTAINLY have to avoid some laser-tripwires here. Magic laser tripwires.

Because this is a heist film.
>>
>>24829699
Too bad we don't have any specific ideas on which parts of the notes to peruse.
>>
>>24829724
If we don't secure this route, we could end up handing the Dramatae a vital strategic asset. On the other hand, we can make use of it ourselves as long as nobody knows about it (Rage seems to have kept this pretty well to himself).

His writing about the "mansion of his mind" reminds me of a bit from 1984: "Nothing was your own except for the few cubic inches inside your skull." And if Citadel has its way, not even that.
>>
>>24830064
I don't know if we really CAN secure this route, other than with sneakery.
>>
>>24829579
"As we'll ever be, I suppose. Jam the door and we'll continue. Hopefully nobody will notice our intrusion until we're long gone and have re-sealed rage's room."
>>
Rolled 15

>>24830210
"As we'll ever be, I suppose. Jam the door and we'll continue. Hopefully nobody will notice our intrusion until we're long gone and have re-sealed Rage's room."

Mage nods. The five/six of you enter the hallway.

"Start with the kitchen." Mari says directing Mage. He quickly goes t the closed door and taps his staff to the door frame. You can hear the creaking of wood. He gives to door an experimental tug. Then a harder one. "Yeah. That should hold a bit."

"Coach house next." Mari says.

Quickly, they go through all of the doors. The rest of you simply holding the doors closed as you wait for Mage to do his work.

You really really hope no one comes in.
>>
>>24830271
>15 people try to bust open the doors
>>
... is high good or bad? Its sometimes hard to tell.
>>
>>24830271
please tell me this is a good thing
>>
>>24830301
it depends on if it's a travel roll
>>
>>24830271
No one. Mage finishes up calmly and smiles. "Okay, that should buy us a minute or two...maybe." He says.

"Come on." Mari says and you go through the passage to Lord Holting's study. It's a very expensive looking room. Walnut walls, large paintings of tasteful art of Citadel skylines and parks hung around the room. It's almost as if you're inside Citadel and looking out onto it. There's a desk, with ledgers, and notes. Boring things filled with numbers about grain yields and territory. You have a feeling that the Princess and the Harpies would like to see these, get a sense of what's actually happening, rather than what Holting just says.

The door to the treasure room is off to the side, subtle and unassuming. An iron door with a little chestnut paneling. A heavy duty handle, and no key hole.

"Now...how do you work?" Mari says, looking at the door.

"Hidden keyhole?" Peri asks.

"Maybe...damn. This thing isn't lightweight, and I don't know if there' spells or not here." Peri/Mari says. "Give us a second."
>>
... try the bracelet. Or magic sight to hep them out.
>>
>>24830401
get to sealing the non-servant doors to this room. Or at least holding them closed.

"I hope you can figure it out Peri, I'd hate to have to smash in"
>>
>>24830463
>>24830414
You lock the normal door to the study, and Mage warps the doorframe a little, just for insurance.

"I hope you can figure it out Peri, I'd hate to have to smash in" You say.

"Alright. Hold on...hey see if that bracelet works." Mari says.

You put your hand with the bracelet onto the handle. Oh! The handle suddenly feels warm in your touch.

You hear a hum and a click. There's then another soft hum...and then one of the decorative brass trumpeter statues that line the door turns slightly so that the bowl of the trumpet is pointed right at your face. There's a pause followed by click...click...click...and then a THUNK.

The handle goes cold and the trumpeter turns back into place.

"What was THAT?" Tricia asks.
>>
>>24830414
Yeah, this first before the barricading then.
>>
>>24830622
"I'm just glad it didn't shoot arrows. I hope whatever crazy thing we have to do here isn't going to make those trumpeters go off."
>>
Wonder if we have to like... stick something into the trumpet? I'm terrible at puzzles.
>>
>>24830622
a security system. Remember that dangerous thing our dear friend was working on? The hand cannon? Those might be similiar.
>>
>>24830634
"I'm just glad it didn't shoot arrows. I hope whatever crazy thing we have to do here isn't going to make those trumpeters go off."

"Don't say stuff like that." Mage says. "The universe screws with us enough. It doesn't need you tempting it."
>>
>>24830705

Try to look at where the trumpeteer was aiming at. It was in Ssen's face, but perhaps her face was blocking line of sight to something? Or perhaps the trumpeteer was indicating something to look at?
>>
>>24830729

You try to open the door. Nothing. The door's still locked.

"Found something." Tricia says. "Holting stuck a note in this ledger."
- - -
Remember: Changed it again.
Speak clearly, or the damn door wont open.

* Complain to Peace that changing every three weeks is nonsense and annoying. Also that it is is NOT too simple. No one's seen the mask, let alone the Dramatae.

"No idea what this means." Tricia says.

>>
>>24831043
So the trumpet is listening for a password.

"The password for the air shield is: 12345."
"Swordfish" and "friend" are also classics.

"Changed it again" -- could be that he's just reminding himself that he's changed the code, or this could be a clue itself.

"Damn door" sounds like it has potential, or maybe "Open up!"

The clue is in the note.

"No one's seen the mask. Let alone the Dramatae"

You grab the handle again. It goes warm. The usual sounds and the trumpet turns towards you. You look directly into the horn.

"Tragedy." You say clearly into the horn.

CLICK.

The handle no longer has any resistance in your hand. It swings downwards and the door opens.

"Wow," Mage says looking at the Trumpet. "How in the Myriad Darkness does THAT work?"

"No way Tragedy made that. Peace?" Tricia says.

"Mayb-holy...guys come in here!" Peri says. "Ohhh, you dream of days like this!"

The room is like an elegant museum. Little display cases and small alcoves carved into the wall. In these displays are gems. Diamons, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, clear orange topazes, pink diamonds. The works. The smallest is as big as a fig, the largest is as big as your fist.

There's also a collection of four compasses in one display case.

And in the center of this room, the piece de la resistance, is a silvery mask within a glass cube. You know that mask. You stared it down when they attacked you in Bronze Peak and almost killed Barney and Lea.

"How'd they get that glass so perfectly straight and clear?" Mage asks, looking at the mask.

"Huh." Tricia says. She's looking up higher on the walls. There's a series of, what look like, family portraits.

Along one side of the wall are a similar collection of spheres on pedestals that were in Rage's private study.

"Is that Lord Holting?" Tricia asks. Pointing at a painting that looks newer than the others.

"Yeah." Mari says. "It's from way back. He's much older now." She points. "That girl standing next to him? That's my grandmother, Lydia Glenn."

"THAT was the old hag?" Tricia says. "How old is Holting then?"

Mari shrugs.

"Creepy at how she's got a hand on Holting's knee." Lea says. "It's a little high up for my taste."

"Oh...oh! Eww." Tricia says.

"What?" Lea asks.

"Okay...this is Lord Holting, and that's his ancestors, right?" Tricia points to all the other pictures. "Look, they're all perfectly the same. Each time. Same chair, same flower, same look on his face...five generations, and three different painters."

Lea shrugs. "It might just be a family tradition. The painter sees the other older portraits and goes from that."

"Maybe." Tricia says. "But look at these last three...Holting's 'father' and his wife, look at her arm."

It's put exactly in the same spot that Lydia Glenn has her hand. It's the same as Holting. She's exactly the same in all the pictures.

"No," Lea says. "The last descendant of the Bear Tribe hasn't betrayed him." He points at Peri. "She's been holding up the traditions of her family quite well actually."

"What do you suppose we do about... a room full of trapped maidens?" You say.

"Not just maidens." Mari says. "Holting's sons as well...he has to get his new body from somewhere."

Peri checks the glass. "Well...here's the deal. The mask and the compass have these doors." She opens the case for the compasses. "Voila." She grabs them and stuffs them in her pack.

"The gems..." She shakes her head. "The glass is a solid pane. The only way we're getting them is if we break them out."

"There's wards on those panes too." Mage says. "I can see them. We smash them, they'll know we're here."

"Could we just teleport out?" Tricia asks.

The necklace that Rage's Daughter gave you has no reaction at all to Tragedy's teleport spheres.
>>
>>24832185
How did they get them IN if it's a solid pane?
>>
>>24832222
Magic.

>>24832185

The put the gems in the alcover first, THEN put the pane in.
>>
>>24832185
smash the teleport spheres. It will hopefully prevent Tragedy from teleporting in while we're breaking out.

As for the gems... anyone have a sack? We can use those as proof that Lord Holting is, well scum. And Mari might just get everything.
>>
>>24832185

Though, we probably still would.
>>
>>24832380

we don't need them for mari. We need them because they are full of souls. Captured souls.
>>
Lets not touch the Tragedy mask directly. It might put a bunch of Citadel magic into us.

>>
>>24832404

>>
>>24832324
Forgetting to ward the brackets holding the pane in place does seem in character for the not-terribly-security-conscious Mr. Holting.
>>
>>24832402
Even if we do grab the gems, what do we do with them? It's not like we have spare bodies to dump them into.

I still think it's way too much risk for a nonexistent gain.
>>
>>24832448
The only real thing we could do for them is use them as evidence, and then break them so they're no longer trapped. Or keep them until we figure out something bodywise, or a way to talk to them to ask what they want us to do.
>>
>>24832448
Well, we were thinking about magical prostheses for Princess Mumei...why not build whole bodies?
>>
>>24832448
Only solution is if Mage can stone-to-mud them all so they can move on to the afterlife in peace. It's really doubtful we can get bodies for them because that's as immoral as kicking them out of theirs in the first place.
>>
>>24832492
Let's not break them right away though. Let's make sure we do whatever need be done in order to correctly free them.
>>
>>24832259
"Marvelous work on the mask and compasses, either way. These gems though... I can't let this stand, but I also have no idea what we would DO with them once we got them. Would breaking them free the people in there? Do they even want us to do that?"

"We can't just leave them here!" Lea says. "This is an abomination of the highest order!"

"Mage, can you dispel the wards?" You ask.

Mage shrugs. "I can try."

"How about the stone then? Can you turn it into mud and get around the glass?"

Mage tilts his head from side to side. "Maybe."

You turn to the Teleport Spheres. They're made of stone, plus covered in magic. That's going to be a job that's a bit more than just smashing it with Beacon.

Peri pops the glass case around the mask open. "Okay...it's all yours Ssen." She says. It's obvious that the pair don't want to touch the thing.

You walk back out into the study. And take a deep breath. You feel a hand on your shoulder and Tricia is there.

"Just some old tragedy. I thought of Dad. I suppose I still miss him more than I thought I did." You wipe your eyes.

Tricia pats you on the shoulder and goes back into the treasure room.

A deep breath, a stretch, and a little bit of holding the medallion, and you're okay to stop being little Ssen Patrick, and go back to being the Paladin Serpent.

"Alright." Mage says. "So I think I have a solution." He points at the gems. "It's a clear Dawnchaser plan, and it involves putting magical energies directly on flesh. If I can do it right, I can put a localized spell of stone to mud around a person's arm and hand. They'll reach through the wall, which will melt at their touch, and they'll be able to grab the gem and pull it back." He says. "The list of things that can go wrong with this are enormous. We might consider using the tip of the tail too, or getting peri to do it. Because peri wants to get a new body anyway.

"Do you mind if I ask why we don't just... melt an arm sized hole?" You ask.

"I can try, but it's less accurate." Mage says. "I could get a small hole, or I could melt the entire wall, or the shift in the stone would crack the glass and set off the seal." He says. "This way is more accurate and wont set off any alarms." He shrugs. "Personally...I say we just smash, grab, and book it."

"What about a fork or a pair of sticks?" Mari suggests.

Mage shrugs. "Possible, but we go back to the big risk on cracking the glass, plus if we lose the grip on the stone while it's inside the wall, then it'll be trapped in solid rock when the spell expires."
>>
>>24833757
Could try melting a very small, arrowshaft-sized hole to see if we can get it right, then widen the hole once we've got it placed properly.

And if we set off an alarm, blow the joint and book it. But I am NOT in favor of risking ANYONE'S arm on this for the sake of stealth.

So, suggestion: everybody but Ssen gets a headstart towards Rage's teleport spheres, Ssen grabs the violet sphere, smashes it if possible, throws it out a window if not, starts producing the area-effect poison gas, and then follows, stopping the gas before getting to Rage's room.

>>
>>24835296
I was fully assuming it'd take three rounds. Ssen gives the others a one-round head-start, then takes off after them, leaving a cloud of gas in her wake.
>>
>>24835327
That's risky. Though, we're not using clang OR beacon, so we can go full defense with quickquick. Something we've not used since we fought granny, I believe.
>>
Do we know if poison clouds dissipate?

What about teleport sickness? I doubt all of the chucklefucks porting in handle teleportation as well as the Dramate, much less be people they'd send to murder us.

>>24835385

>>24835369
They'll surely dissipate eventually. I don't think we care how quickly, as long as they're enough to slow down the inbound teleporters.

However, we do care how quickly we can stop generating the gas, since we have to stop before catching up to the others in the teleport room.
>>
>>24835399
well, I mean like after an hour or two would it disperse onto walls or something like, say, a powder cloud or fluid cloud would. I'm a little worried about servant fallout.
>>
>>24835419
We're rather deep in the vault, it would probably settle and we can always smash a window to let the gas out
>>
>>24835444

Very high up windows. It looks like you're inside a parapet or tower. They're small little slit windows.
>>
>>24835615

>>
Okay, so, our battle plan is:

Everyone retreats, Ssen buys time for the others while activating gas, gas the place up and then seal the door, turn off gas while running back to team in rageportal.

Is that the entirety of it?
>>
>>24835615
Alright, it will take three full turns for you to generate the poisons within you. Then you can either let the fumes emit from you, or you spit out a mass of venom and bile that will be the source of the gas.

It'll take you the same three rounds to get out of the room and into the servant's passage.

Or you can use the three rounds to get out, and slam the vault door close.

You can also try and whack the golden orb with Beacon...but screwing with magic always is risky.
>>
>>24835736
... fuck it whack the orb

Now THAT is a proper Dawnchaser plan.

>>24835736

So we can fumigate the room...

Well, that'll stop persuit pretty damn well, but considering how virulent chemical weapons tend to be in confined spaces we pretty much WILL kill a few innocent servants in this building, if not ALL of them (depending on how close to actual vaporous Flourine this stuff is).

I'd recommend a good strong whack on that orb, and if it doesn't work, book it quickquick!
>>
>>24835736
close the vault. after spitting poison gas inside
>>
>>24835803
ya, backup plan if whackanorb doesn't work.. so start making that poison spit.

>>24835803

Good thought, the vault might hold the gas in.

My opinion on the gas, though, is that it's like white phosphorous...always an alignment violation.
>>
>>24835736
Spend three rounds generating the gas, have everyone else use that time to get out, then while the newcomers are choking/suffering teleport sickness we leave too.
>>
>>24835736
I'd say full retreat. Both the poison and damaging the orb are too risky in my opinion. What if our friends we are trying to free are with them? And I doubt a closed door would be enough to slow them down in time.
>>
if Beacon wasn't so important I'd suggest tossing the spear at the orb

but alas

>>24835797

Not using a weapon we've been given is extremely stupid

We don't have to use it now, but not using our poison gas ever would be realllll stupid

>>
>>24836414

My point is that we're not like the Grey Wardens or something. Destroying your enemy any way you can is the Dragon thing to do, and the last time we acted like that, Lea kicked us in the soul.

>>
>>24836434

Not using a weapon because it's too terrible to use isn't stupid at all.

We're a paladin! Killing an enemy without remorse, pity, or even a chance to redeem themselves is a failure on our part of the highest order!
>>
>>24836450

Is lea threatening to leave enough of a deterrent to be choosing the "dragon-option" ever?

No

We just bias towards the paladin lamia scale rather than the dragon lamia

War is a horrible thing. All death is horrible. And yet we fight and kill. Ignoring a weapon is foolish in these circumstances.
>>
>>24836450
She got on our case because we focused more on destroying our enemy than helping others. She has no problem with us using whatever tools we have available as long as we don't lose sight of our mission.
>>
>>24836474
Agreed.

You lunge for the door, and as you slam the door you can see the other active spheres start to glow. Oh, great. It's going to be a BIG party!

You push the other trumpet statue over and in front of the door, and you give the desk a big shove as you push it in the way as well. (The vault door opens out into the office.) Then you make a break for the servant's entrance.

Down the dark passageway, a bend here and a turn there, and now you're in the central traverse.

Roll 1d20, lower is better

You can't give everyone a chance.

You bolt down the passage way to Rage's lab. You go down the stairs, left, left, a right, another flight of stairs, and one more right and you fling open the door...and are looking at a crossbow and glowing staff.

"Oh thank His Light." Mage says, as he and Peri lower their weapons. "Hurry and close the door!"

You close it and Lea and Tricia get to work barricading it.

"Mage and I were working on something." Tricia says. "I think it's possible to get one of the other teleport spheres working again. I mean, White Hall's hardly safe. Right?"

"Lea, Tricia, get as much of Rage's books as you can." You shout.

"Got it!" It takes a few minutes but the girls come in with a sack filled with Rage's books, scrolls, and notes. Hopefully they'll have some use.

"I hope Lightmare forgives us for leaving him behind...again." You say.

"Eh, he'll eat someone and go to sleep." Tricia says.

"Lightmare loves children!" Lea says scandalized.

"That's what I'm afraid of." Peri says.

There's a pounding on the servant's door, as well as the sound of someone breaking through the regular door to Rage's rooms.

"And that's our cue!" Tricia says. "Punch it Mage."

"If we can get one of the other teleport spheres working again, will it continue to work, or stop after we use it?" You ask as everyone grabs onto you.

"I have NO idea." Mage says. "I'm just hoping that this trip doesn't kill us. But I'm using my own magic, and that means that MY special token is something these masked fucks can't recreate." He points at his wristband/staff shackle. "Now hold onto your organs."

Mage strikes the stone sphere with his staff.

We basically become more likely to get 1's, 20's, or numbers in the neighborhood of 10.5. The average is...well, no more or less biased than /tg/ dice. Not sure if that's good or bad.
>>
>>24837272

Yep. Then as >>24837261 pointed to there is increase of 1s and 20s happening because they overrule all other rolls. It's, again, a bad system that will prolong battles. Whatever. I'm still for a best of three or even two system personally.

There's a flash of light, and the usual shift of stomach shifting horridness. Then you're breathing fresh air...for about two seconds. Then you're soaking wet, and in a little pain as you all fall into the fountain in front of Stone Hall's Conclave.

You look up, blinking...into a carved face of your favorite pain in the ass. Isen put a statue of himself in front of the Conclave to replace the destroyed one. He made a big deal about using 'pieces of the old, to herald in the new' which means he was cheap and used stone from the ruined building to make his statue. And this statue has Isen looking pensively at an orb in his hand...contemplating the mysteries of the universe no doubt.

Guess what that orb actually was?

"Ssen..." You hear Mage groan. He's stuck handing from Isen's outreached hand, his robes got stuck on the statue and he's just hanging there in mid-air. "Can I turn Isen into a frog and you eat him?"

BFQ: Skillset based. Roll above 70 For every point in a skill you get another dice. to roll, every success is a a degree of success, crits are two degrees and critfails are negative 2.

SM: DC rolls, you have a DC, two outta three rolls that beat the DC garuntee success. Crit fails and crits after the first 3 but within the first ten modify your roll. (you still succeed or fail but something helps or harms you)

Best of Three: Generic, used in more quests then I can name. Sometimes uses a modified Critting like SM.

>How about we do best of 3, but if you get a 1, the top score is erased.

That would look like this:

1: 58/8000 = 0.725% (cumulative 2-1: 0/8000 = 0.0%)
2: 121/8000 = 1.5125% (cumulative 2-2: 121/8000 = 1.5125%)
3: 151/8000 = 1.8875% (cumulative 2-3: 272/8000 = 3.4%)
4: 208/8000 = 2.6% (cumulative 2-4: 480/8000 = 6.0%)
5: 292/8000 = 3.65% (cumulative 2-5: 772/8000 = 9.65%)
6: 403/8000 = 5.0375% (cumulative 2-6: 1175/8000 = 14.6875%)
7: 541/8000 = 6.7625% (cumulative 2-7: 1716/8000 = 21.45%)
8: 676/8000 = 8.45% (cumulative 2-8: 2392/8000 = 29.9%)

10: 790/8000 = 9.875% (cumulative 2-10: 3942/8000 = 49.275%)
11: 766/8000 = 9.575% (cumulative 2-11: 4708/8000 = 58.85%)
12: 688/8000 = 8.6% (cumulative 2-12: 5396/8000 = 67.45%)
13: 556/8000 = 6.95% (cumulative 2-13: 5952/8000 = 74.4%)
14: 400/8000 = 5.0% (cumulative 2-14: 6352/8000 = 79.4%)
15: 268/8000 = 3.35% (cumulative 2-15: 6620/8000 = 82.75%)
16: 163/8000 = 2.0375% (cumulative 2-16: 6783/8000 = 84.7875%)
17: 85/8000 = 1.0625% (cumulative 2-17: 6868/8000 = 85.85%)
18: 34/8000 = 0.425% (cumulative 2-18: 6902/8000 = 86.275%)
19: 10/8000 = 0.125% (cumulative 2-19: 6912/8000 = 86.4%)
20: 1030/8000 = 12.875% (cumulative 2-20: 7942/8000 = 99.275%)

Common DCs:

DC 10: 4790/8000 = 59.875% (with 1d20: 11/20 = 55.0%)
DC 11: 4000/8000 = 50.0% (with 1d20: 10/20 = 50.0%)
DC 12: 3234/8000 = 40.425% (with 1d20: 9/20 = 45.0%)
DC 13: 2546/8000 = 31.825% (with 1d20: 8/20 = 40.0%)
DC 14: 1990/8000 = 24.875% (with 1d20: 7/20 = 35.0%)
DC 15: 1590/8000 = 19.875% (with 1d20: 6/20 = 30.0%)
DC 16: 1322/8000 = 16.525% (with 1d20: 5/20 = 25.0%)
DC 17: 1159/8000 = 14.4875% (with 1d20: 4/20 = 20.0%)
DC 18: 1074/8000 = 13.425% (with 1d20: 3/20 = 15.0%)
DC 19: 1040/8000 = 13.0% (with 1d20: 2/20 = 10.0%)
DC 20: 1030/8000 = 12.875% (with 1d20: 1/20 = 5.0%)

So: almost no critfails
(0.725% chance), but would still mean that DCs 12-18 are worse than with a
straight 1d20.

"Assuming that will work. Convenient as it might seem, a teleport network the enemy can use is no good to us."

The moment they busted down Rage's door our plan to subvert the teleport system was doomed.

Okay. we need to A. give a fucking report on this to avery or isen, this shit is nuts.

B. drop off the gems with whomever the lead magical researcher here is.

C. GO SEE GRANNY AND THE LILLUNS. We can tell granny the dramatae know. Then take her to the beach.
>>
>>24837745
They already have access to it anyways so i doubt much will change. For what little time we had access to it we put it to good use. Now we just need ways to destroy it ASAP.

Tricia's with us, right? I mean, she hasn't been mentioned recently.

HEADCOUNT BEFORE WE DESTROY THE THING
>>
>>24837705
Best of three, though, requires DCs calibrated accordingly, and all of the DCs in this quest were calibrated for a 1d20. We really don't want to steamroll through combat, either; that's a different kind of not-fun.

Here's what best-of-three looks like:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/24790017/#p24795515

Personally, I'd still advocate a straight 1d20, and if it seems like we're failing too much, just give us a few more opportunities to boost our to-attack +s.

"Pity." Mari says.

"Convenient as it might seem, a teleport network the enemy can use is no good to us." You say.

"Didn't say not to do it." Mari nods.

Mage closes his eyes and concentrates. There's a flare of magic light and Mage's hands and robes are now covered in mud. He wipes his face off. "I could have thought that through better.

w-w-w

tricia is here

right?
>>
>>24837832
No what we need is a way to speed up combat. So i still advocate taking the time to give us a straight BAB. A +5 should do nicely.

A 1d20 for skill checks is fine. Combat should not take 3+ hours against fucking mooks.
>>
>>24837832
Though those charts are very nice I've seen nights where quests roll nothing but losses, even with a best of three. TG dice definately are time based.
>>
>>24837843
ECHO. Is Tricia with us?
>>
Falling asleep

Things to do: tell grany that the Dramatae DO know she's alive and in Stone Hall but that in Rage's calculations for them at least she wasnt considered a threat as long as she stayed where she was.

Talk to Avery about the crystal soul jems, the paladins being gathered in Citadel, I dunno what else all.
Should we come right out and tell him about the entire citadel conspiracy yet? He's seen the edges of it everywhere as we run around and beat down problems.
>>
>>24837860
Tricia is here. Yes. She's just dripping wet and trying to keep herself together. Teleporting isn't very kind to her seeing as she has a LOT of little bits and pieces that get shuffled around.

>>
>>24837843
Alright. We have a giant pile of Rage's paperwork; let's get it in front of Isen and Avery, with the warning that now that the Dramatae know we have it their plans may well start changing to compensate.

Let's also show them the Tragedy mask, and revel in our momentary success. Then let's get ourselves some uncorrupted Lantern coins.

And let's take the time to visit Granny while we're in Stone Hall.
>>

>>
>>24837941

You go over to Tricia. "You got yourself together?"

She leans on you and holds up her hand. "Just...give me a moment."

"Uuhh, Ssen..." Tricia holds up the sack that the Dramatae mask is in.

"Breaking and entering into a high nobles' house. Theft. Not to mention destruction of property." The voice says from the bag. "I can have you declared anathema and have your mantle ripped from you for this."

"That's funny. The lives of three cutpurses against destroying one of your precious masks?

"Because you're a Paladin. You are pledged to protect life. The lives of the here and now." He says. "As for trust...say yes...and I'll send one of them to you. Alive and unharmed. You'll also be allowed to remove their mask." He says. "A show of good faith."

"Robin, hang in there, this guy is obviously bluffing. You're the only thing keeping them afloat at this point, I have defeated them if they kill your crew."

If we give him the mask then the cycle continues and thousands more will continue to die for Citadel's storytime. I like Robin but his life isn't worth that cost.
>>
>>24838534
Ha..hahaha.ahahah.AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! (break into peals of helpless laughter) (recover) Light above Tragedy you really are fucking utterly pathetic. Like i said go ahead, do it. KILL THEM!! Let me win forever. Ill have to go thorugh this EXACT SAME thing when we kill Citadel once and for all, just on a larger scale. Ill just have to get used to not saving everyone, now wont i?
>>
>>24838587
Peace was a pact with the Devil.
This is a hostage situation.

Learn the difference.
>>
We should be careful here, we're getting a little too close to the little dragon.
Obviously neither option is really going to work for us at the moment, lets bring up Rage's notes and look for a third option.

>>24838606
We don't know that they can't make more of the greater masks, this might just be a temporary set back, a great one, but still a temporary one.
>>
>>24838580
>>24838587
yeah, we didn't even cave for TRICIA'S FUCKING LIFE.
>>
>>24838534
If you are the mage Robin claims you are, then I dare you to claim your mask yourself. You are dead without your mask and doomed without Robin and company.

So many have already died in the quest to end your group and the Citadel, It would only serve to test my faith to keep your mask from you.

So face me if you dare, Tragedy.

Not this.
>>
>>24838623
Either way, we still need the mask to purify the lantern coins.
>>
>>24838623
yes. Rage's notes is the best alternate deal for him.
>>
>>24838623
It will also purify the Lantern Coins, a PERMANENT boost for us. as well.
>>
>>24838613
What are you talking about.

Peace was basically holding Tricia's life hostage by tempting us. It was only through sheer willpower we managed to duck out of it.
>>
>>24838623
There was only one Lantern. If they could make more masks I think they would have done so by now.
>>
>>24838613
Not much of one. We sat right there and decided we wouldn't make a deal with Peace to save Tricia's life, and if we wouldn't do it for her there's not a soul in the world we'd do it for.

I still say we remind him what happens to Dramatae who screw up like Rage did, ask him what Peace will do when he kills huge assets for their side to make up for his own mistake losing the mask, and then offer him Rage's notes.
>>
>>24838534
And keep the others trapped in the agony masks? No, all or none.
>>
>>24838613
>They're both deals with Dramatae for somebody's life
I'm not seeing a difference. Also we've refused all the other hostage situations we've been in as well. Like those occuli in the bear shrine.
>>
>>24838668
This seems to be the only middle route.
>>
err guys if hes going to killed for losing the mask why would he take the notes? dead is dead.
>>
We should tell him that we did not accept Peace's offer to spare our own mate, and ask him how he expects us to accept this trade
>>
"Look, tragedy, you have a nice hostage situation here. I've been in a few of those before. Lea, tell me, did we stop the bad guys in those situations?"

wait for her answer

"Did we let the presence of hostages allow an evil man who would take more hostages later go?"

wait for answer

"There you go tragedy. It just doesn't make any sense to go along with the demands of a man who takes hostages. He will just take more hostages and make more demands."
>>
>>24838668
We should read him Rage's vision of the future of Citadel and his reason for betraying the Dramatae. See if we can shake him up a bit.
>>
>>24838685
He'll take the notes because he might use those in turn to bargain for his life with Peace.
>>
>>24838668

Seconded.
>>
>>24838694
Could be an interesting result.
>>
>>24838696
Indeed. Peace might not even know that Tragedy has them, and what they say.

>>24838694
Heh, not a bad idea.
>>
"If you could really send one of them to me directly, what stops you from sending an army to me?"

There's no response. You get the idea that the man is upset that he didn't think of something like that.

"But I've got a better deal for you. I've got Rage's notes right here; send Robin and his friends back alive, and you can have those back. Otherwise we let Peace know you lost them *and* the mask. Remember what happened to Rage, when he screwed up? They can always find another Tragedy."

"Rage didn't screw up. He betrayed us." Tragedy says. "Peace forgives error, especially when it is not of personal action. She does not forgive betrayal." He says. "The Tragedy Mask is unique...but it is not totally irreplaceable."

"It's true." Robin says. "The asshole's got another Tragedy mask on. It's not the same as the one you took...but it's got the same juice."
>>
>>24838742
"The password was "tragedy". I got it in one guess. HOW many times did peace tell you to pick a better one?"
>>
>>24838742
"You're the one who has a mask on, Robin. How am I meant to trust you're not just saying what he wants you to say? Especially seeing as you specifically said earlier that he didn't have a mask."
>>
>>24838742

While this nutcase keeps talking we need to come up with a plan B. Some way to force him out if he takes too long.

We could always threaten to out him as a practicing necromancer. If he doesn't think Peace will hang him, the Occuli definitely will.
>>
>>24838742
Thats sooo utterly beautiful. You truly are a completely IDIOT!!!!!!!! My Light, here i was raising the town guard and everything for all three of your imminent arrivals, i was SOOOOOOOOOOOO looking forward to killing all of you.
And for what its worth i dont care if Peace gave you Rage's mask Tragedy. This one has far more uses than you know.
>>
>>24838742
"Well then why do you want it back, Tragedy?"

"While you're thinking about how to answer that in a way that DOESN'T sound like an obvious lie, let me do a little reading. It's something out of Rage's notes: the reason he betrayed Peace... and I think you should hear it."

Then we read it to him while we're on our way to the forge.

I don't like reading your post due to the parsing.

I also don't like the content.

"Errors of personal action, like, say, using a password of 'Tragedy' on the Tragedy mask? Or do you mean errors of personal action like killing your best tacticians to make up for losing it, and poking a class 1 destabilizing factor with a stick in the process? Sufficiently advanced negligence is indistinguishable from betrayal.

In any case, Peace herself tried to bargain using Tricia's life, and as much as it tore me apart, it didn't work. So what makes you think this will?"

I do like the idea of reading to him from the notes.

And yet you are hiding behind a couple of cutpurses like a child behind his mother's dress. Tragedy wanted me to spare Comedy in exchange for Trica's life and I did not accept. How do you think Robin and company compare to that? How much value do you think you carry when Comedy is the one Peace is interested in protecting.

You don't have any way to get the mask back short of coming here in person.

You read off Rage's description of the vision that he had. Of a universe that was Citadel. Stars smothers, planets harvested, and the city ever growing, built upon a harvested universe and the souls of its inhabitants.

"Okay." Robin says. "I don't care what this guy says or does. Do NOT give him that mask."

"Fuck..." You hear Jessi's tone. "You mean Ryan was RIGHT the ENTIRE TIME?!"

(cont)

"Look, your position is one of VERY little strength. I don't even know if that's actually robin and his crew there or some of your actors. I ahve to say YES to your deal before you'll even give me any proof. What kind of crazy person do you think I am?"

"No. Cultural Marxism is NOT a practical or realistic way to run a society, sorry Ryan. Wait, you mean Ryan suspected something as bonkers as this?"

>>
>>24838981
"Told you so!" Ryan says.

"Enough!" Tragedy says. "You don't understand. There IS no way to continue this Golden Age. One Generation makes perfection, the second one does fine, the third only slips a little, but then it just decays and ROTS." He snaps. "THAT is what progress is, and THAT is what you represent! Rot. Death. Destruction. I have saved more lives and created more happiness than you can EVER attest to. I BUILT the Guilds with my own two hands. Have YOU created anything? Have you done ANYTHING other than preach and spread death? Anything that I have done that the Light frowns upon is endlessly outweighed by the good that I have done. Who are YOU to think yourself above me? I am a SAINT! Citadel NEEDS me, Peace NEEDS me...and...and even if they are clever...if it will cause you ANY amount of pain. Then I will kill something that you value, Serpent. Just to spite you. These are your friends, yes? Part of your cadre...well I am TAKING them from you. Unless I get what is MINE."

You can hear him screaming. "And don't think that I won't take a little pleasure in this...or my time. You took my Lydia from me. I was a professional about it, and kept myself above such foolishness as revenge...but when the opportunity is right before me."

You've arrived at a forge. The blacksmith is a little weirded out at how you're all talking to a sack...that's talking back. But Lea shoos him away with a few coins.

"You have turned down hostages before...but let me tell you one more thing." Holting says. "A man that dies while wearing a Mask of Citadel...their souls will belong to Citadel. They will be part of the great city...forever. You may not care about their lives, but I doubt you want THAT to be their ultimate fate."
>>
>>24839057
Even Citadel can die. And those souls will be free.

"I'll accept it anyway. It belongs to me, not a douche like you...you betrayed them to Peace. Didn't you?"

"When you are old, and your body is weak, and you feel the end approaching...you will feel the fear. And you will do ANYTHING to conquer it. Death is evil...and there is no one on their deathbed who will deny that they would not sell much for a single day more. They weren't enlightened folk trying to understand people...they just despised being human. So they flattered the monsters, tried to learn to be like them, even fucked a few...they despised the weakness of humanity. I just helped show them the truth."

Mari shakes her head. "Just another scared, old, bigot. Hmph. I was hoping for more."

"I have a manifesto in my locker in the Coins at Bronze Peak." Ryan says. "You have that printing thing...I want everyone to read it and understand the plight of the masses."

"Plant a black rosebush under a white oak tree at midnight for me...and my ghost will break free and I will haunt most impressively." Jessi says. "Please...oh but not in White Tree or Bronze Peak. If you could do the ruins of Coral Gate...oh now THAT is a place for a ghost."

>>24839701
No point wondering.
>>24839709
Smelt it into a bar and beat Holting to death with it?
>>
>>24839638
It just goes to show how totally retarded they actually are and how much they depended upon Rage. Seriously id have a beer with a Rage any day of the week. He's awesome.
>>
>>24839701
ryan's smart. He would have been at none-of-the-three sites.
>>
>>24839635
Yes, for the purpose of this story, it has been shown that death has been delayed at best at times. Once there was nothing delaying it the good scythe dropped and reaped those souls. Remember what we've been told about those at Cathedral within Citadel, the number of people that dropped dead in it. Death has always been here within the story. The powerful can delay it for a long time but it's there lurking and waiting for its chance. It always will have it's chance in the end.

"Yours will be a bright journey, you three. Brighter than mine anyway." You say. "Oh, what do you want me to do with your gold?"

"Give it to the First Wood war orphans...I dunno. Something trite like that. I think I'll need all the good words I can get...my Journey's not THAT bright." He sighs. "Now hurry up, I'm sick of this stupid mask. It itches.

And you know what? I'm glad we met, Paladin Serpent."

You and the other Dawnchasers look at each other. You look at Lea. She sighs sadly, closes her eyes and nods.

"This is done for the right reason. Not revenge. Not spite. And you will never say that this was justified, because it was what had to be done." She says. "Remember who paid for this...and who we do this for. This is your burden, Paladin. I am honored to help carry it...and make sure that this fucker gets to see it coming."

There's a pause as the rest of the Dawnchasers all look at you and nod. They know it's not them who kills Robin and the others...but there's still weight to carry. But that's what it means to be of the Clear.

"Do it." You say.

Tricia drops the bag and the mask into the smelter. A few pumps of the bellows, and a hissing pour...and you have a small bar of silvery metal. It's lighter than you thought it would be...and surprisingly cool to the touch.

Now it's just a matter of smelting the rest of the coins into the proper mirror shields. Then the incantation...and then you end this.

Right after you end them.

heck, we're gonna die soon as we have kids. If we don't have kids, we'll die of something we can't predict later on.

Rage would sneer at the beer then go back to his diagrams and plots.

Tragedy put his head in his hands. He looked up suddenly at the sound of someone arriving in his vault.

"What happened to your 'family' Tragedy? Finally decide to let them..oh...you killed them." Comedy says. "Huh." She steps around the bodies of the three dead elves. "They were really useful up until now. Well, you kill them...you get replacements. They better be as good as these ones were. Anyway, Peace wants you in the Grove. We're deciding on which hidden elf village to burn to the ground. I've got two, just need your pick on which elf gets to be the new Lightbringer."

"We're doing an elf?"

"Yeah, he starts of racist, gains a human lover, companions, rallies the Citadel loyal elves and human together into an army. Marches on the monsters, and then sacrifices himself to prevent the return of the Cold Shadow. It's all set up. We're using some of Rage's old notes actually. His lab is still down below, right?"

"Oh."

"Oh? What's this 'oh'?" She pauses. "Why are you wearing a clay mask?"

"Okay...this wasn't my fault...the Paladin Serpent managed to get access to Rage's teleport ring and..."

"What. Went. Wrong?"

"This was just a mistake...I can explain."

"Very well." Peace says as she enters the study from the vault. She draws Soma from its sheath. "Explain."

Tragedy makes a little choking noise.

He makes it again when he's on the floor and Comedy has finished kicking him.

"Enough." Peace says. There's a pause. "Gather the bodies and bring them to the Grove. They still have use."

"What about him?" Comedy asks.

"He will follow." Peace says. "The Destroyer of Paradise is going to come to the Grove. He will face her, and either he will kill her or she will kill him. Either way...all will be well. All will be Citadel."

"Amen." Comedy says.

>>24839777
yep.

yep.

Gonna smash every brick in citadel.
>>
>>24839777
I almost feel sorry for Tragedy.

Almost.

I wonder what would happen if we never show up to the Grove and just go straight to the Fey Court.
>>
by grabbing Rage's notes.... did we just screw over Peace unintentionally again?
>>
>>24839777
Oh gods that was epic as fuck. Well looks like he wont ever get back on his feet again.

Also we need to kill Citadel so Lightsdamn bad.
>>
>>24839838
No. Very, very intentionally.
>>
>>24839838
Sounds like it.

Man, it seems like Rage really was their only source of imagination.
>>
>>24839816
Or what would happen if we just figured out a way to defeat Citadel and pulled it off while they were waiting for us?

That'd surely fuck with them a little.
>>
>>24839838
I would hope so. ANYTHING that fucks that bitches day over is a good thing in my book.
>>
>>24839858
head straight for the Heart? Nah wouldn't work, they still have all those teleporters.

Though there is a very good reason to go to Citadel at the moment. The Paladin Summit. Of course we might just attract every Passion and Blank in Citadel if we do that.
>>
>>24839816
And we close on that scene. Tomorrow, May 15th 4-6pm PST, will hopefully be a little lighter in tone. Definitely some lamia family time. I loved Robin and Co. too, and I am sorry to see them go. May His Light watch over them, and you. See you next thread. And maybe by His Grace we'll FINALLY figure out the damn dice.
>>
>>24839777
Anyone have a good eulogy for those three?

I'm terrible at euologies.

also is there a smith here? Did they hear this conversation? How confused are they? Or did we let ourself in and start their forge for them?

I like to imagine that second one.
>>
>>24839902
>lamia family time

Oh boooooy. We earned at least a night off.
>>
>>24839902
Was amazing Echo. Cant say im dissapoint by the NEXT DAY thread.

>NEXT DAY thread
I have to say, next day threads make me so very happy. So very, very happy.

Not nearly happy enough to forget fucking robin and crew, they were GREAT. I am outraged, saddened, and appalled. How dare you, tragedy.

Also, we need to do a eulogy.
>>
>>24839777

>kills them anyway
>peace kills him for being a complete fucktard
>pic related

>>24839905

Not until they rest in peace. And as long as Citadel lives, they don't. We have work to do.
>>
>>24839902
The best part about all of this is that they have GATHERED the army we will use to fuck them over FOR us.

Night Echo, and yay for upcoming for Lamia Family Time, dont know if my heart will hold out.

I actually hate Tragedy more then Peace for killing Robin and crew, i really liked them as side characters, and I suspect they are planning something nasty with the corpses.
>>
I'm a tad worried about what they are going to use those bodies for.
>>
>>24839953
>>24839952
>no eulogy until they rest in peace
Good idea.

Also, I really really want to do the ghost haunting thing. That sounds bitchin'. Along with the manifesto thing.

Leaving flowers for hermia bottom, though, sounds less bitchin'. It sounds solemn. I will feel really sad at that part.
>>
>>24839953
Well if Peace WASNT such a complete fucktard then it would have such utterly FUCKTARDED servant now would it.

I wonder how Thisleblossom/Comedy is going to die for the stupidity.
>>
>>24839902
Thank you as well, Echo.
>>
>>24839974
to feed fucking monsters.
>>
>>24839972

Well, since Peace is going to pit us against him, take your time to figure out what you want to do to the poor fool...that we haven't already.
>>
>>24839966
we all called it.

That conversation was Ssen -explicitly- explaining all the bad things that would happen to tragedy the instant he chose not to accept rage's library and instead kill some hostages out of a petty spite grudge. In detail. He then said "Naw fuck it, I'll do it anyway"

And the paladin kept her word. All the things she told him would happen... are happening.
>>
>>24839902
I think a bit of music is in order for Robin and Co

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Vx_RdaFHeE

To the fallen.
Also we should keep our promise and talk to the queen of the elves about her daughter or whatnot.
>>
>>24839974
Elf village massacre. Who's going to notice a few extra bodies?
>>
>>24839994
Get him to tell his confession. Inform him explicitly that we will kill him when he is done.

He will break down SO HARD, as per robin's crew's wishes.
>>
>>24840006
Ah, robin.

If only we were smarter. Faster. Stronger. Wiser.
>>
>>24840006
Honestly Thistleblossom IS Comedy. There is no denying it at this point. What with the Lichification of ALL of Citadel's servants, there is no way in hell Comedy is not Thistleblossom.
>>
>>24840030
now now, they're probably not using lichification for all of them. I bet peace is able to dragon bond-ish people.
>>
>>24840024
I suspect we blew our chance to save them when we escaped the manor instead of staying and fighting, and then stopped him from coming to us by breaking the teleporter, we might have even been able to take Holting if he did not have the real mask.
>>
>>24840054
By escaping, instead of staying and fighting, we blew our chance to get massacred, I think.
>>
in order to free all three of them we would need 15 hits with either beacon or clang. Or some lucky intervention with the masks some how.
>>
>>24840054
hmm, in retrospect, we should have allowed a wave or two to come through before breaking the thing. and then snap the mask in twain when he started talking.
>>
ya Robin and crew were basically all bosses. We'd be facing 4 bosses and who knows how many mooks.
>>
Anyone have a clue who the Dark Shadow refers too?

I'm thinking it might be Peace's Daddy.
>>
>>24840118
In the abstract, perhaps; it might also just be a reference to the fake enemy that the Dramatae are setting up for them.
>>
>>24840118
not the dark shadow. The COLD shadow.

Probably some kind of frozen-north-deal. Accompanied by natural disaster.
>>
>>24840069
>>24840084
Robin and crew where about equal to a party member each, so I suspect it would have been a big boss(Holting) with multiple attacks/spells per turn like Adahn had, and 3 minibosses that where harder to hit, and hit more often(Ryan and Crew)

It would have been a hard fight, but I think we could have won, as long as they didnt bring a bunch of mooks with crossbows.
>>
>>24840137
they totally were bringing mooks with crossbows in addition to those things you said.
>>
So, how much of this do we want to tell granny? How much do we want to tell avery? Do we want to introduce avery and granny now that it doesn't matter one damn bit whether she's public or not?
>>
>>24840137
Multiple teleport spheres were glowing. We're talking Holting, Robin, Ryan, Jessi, and an army of mooks, all simultaneously, with Peace and Comedy not far behind them.
>>
>>24840176
All of it, all of it, and yes but still only with Granny's permission.
>>
>>24840185
I wasn't asking in a "should we keep secrets from either of these two" way.

More of a "What parts of this story are interesting and pertinent to each of the parties involved" kind of way. We can't just tell our whole adventure to granny every time we show up. It's rude.
>>
also, we need to tell dana she's an OUTCAST now.

Fuck.
>>
>>24840182
only the Gold one was glowing, else we would not have been able to delay them all by striking it with Beacon.
>>
>>24840214
wait nevermind, sleep deprived brain derp.
>>
>>24840197
Ah, I see.

In that case: Avery needs to know just about all of it, for tactical reasons. We can tell Granny as much as she wants to hear, but especially the bits pertaining to her, and about Rage.

>>24840214
>>24836530
>You lunge for the door, and as you slam the door you can see the other active spheres start to glow. Oh, great. It's going to be a BIG party!
>>
By the way, next time we get to Bronze Peak, we need to deliver the bad news to Old One about Holting, and tell him that we're one mask up and can uncorrupt the Lantern coins, not to mention that we learned what they're good for.
>>
>>24840240
oh, but he said not to come back until we had the heads. Three of them.

Or at least one.
>>
>>24840251
We'll probably have Tragedy's head by the next time we get back to Bronze Peak. But in any case, given how Old One felt about the Bear Tribe, I think that news would be essential to deliver. We can pass on through Paul that we have news for Old One about Holting, and that we have one of the Dramatae's masks, and see if he wishes to see us and hear the tales.
>>
>>24840282
fair enough.

A lingering question: WHOSE forge are we using? Do they know we're using it? Are they going to stumble down here and see the paladin serpent and her corhorts have broken in, in the middle of the night, to refine metals in his forge?

That's like finding a policeman has broken into your house to use your blender to make margaritas.
>>
>>24840332
>>24839057
>You've arrived at a forge. The blacksmith is a little weirded out at how you're all talking to a sack...that's talking back. But Lea shoos him away with a few coins.
>>
>>24840355
read right over that. Butterfingers! Eyes! Buttereyes!

Well, Iook forward to talking to isen and tara, family (beach?) time with grandma, and perhaps letting ava through security to see adahn.

Also I want to check in with billings about that kid we captured way back. Maybe check the kid ourselves, if there's progress.
