You are an adventurer, recently signed on to the 765 Professionals (or "765Pro") adventurers' guild after your previous guild disbanded due to overwhelming competition from the rapidly-expanding 961 Professionals. Here at 765Pro, you've been dubbed with the peculiar title of "Producer", and in that role it's your job to lead the less-experienced members of the guild on quests.

At the moment, you're deep within a large cave system, staring down a truly grotesque monstrous bat the size of a large mastiff. You've encountered giant bats before in your day, but never any like this -- with its pustule-ridden face, jumble of jagged fangs, and lashing, barbed tail, this thing looks like it came straight out of the bowels of hell.

And it has friends.

>What's your plan of attack?
>Roll 1d20 for it. Today's magic number is 5; the fifth post rolling is the number I'll go by to determine how things go.
>>
Rolled 7

Let's get the hell outta bat country.
>>
Rolled 19

Can we funnel them into a cave? a choke point would make them easier to deal with.
>>
Well, we need to split off into at least two groups. One to fend off the minions, and one to wail on the big guy.
>>
Rolled 9

Can we use Haruka's light ability to maybe temporarily blind them? I have no ideas on what to do next but it might be able to buy us some time or see if they're affected by it.
>>
Rolled 5

For start, tell Haruka to blind the bastards.
>>
Rolled 4

Burn them! Flammable guano plus magical alchemy fire should do wonders. Have Miki keep the flames fanned away from the party and towards the bats. Dependence on how much space we have in the tunnel take up front defenses alone or with Haruka space permitting.
>>
>>24869475
My nog.
>>
>>24869475
Don't we risk the whole shithouse going up in flames?
>>
>>24869385
Conveniently enough, you already have them at something of a choke point. You're in a tunnel, a few dozen yards away from where it opens out into the larger cave where the bats are. The tunnel's not especially narrow where you are (two of the big bats could fit side-by-side on the ground with only a little cramping), but it gets narrower behind you.
>>
>>24869475
Aw shit, they're gonna burn for what they did.
>>
>>24869475
Good roll. And I agree with this. Though I like the blinding idea as well when we need it.
>>
Rolled 11

>>24869490
we're in luck with >>24869475 then.

Purge them in blessed flames!
>>
>>24869485
That's the idea. If things get out of hand have Yukiho seal the entrance and turn the cavern into an oven. I agree with blinding idea as well.
>>
I just realized, no one here thought to bring any anti-venom sort of stuff right?
I mean, we got a good roll and shit's gonna burn, but getting bitten or stabbed by something pustule ridden and wallowing in shit isn't the best idea.
>>
>>24869559
...now that you mention it...
>>
>>24869559
I had assumed Haruka had a purge ability of some sort being a healer, though you do bring up a good point for later quests and this one should she become incapacitated again.
>>
>>24869559
Haruka's the team medic, so I'm assuming she has an cure skill for ailments.
>>
>>24869317
>>24869475
Pulling out your last flask of alchemical fire, you shout behind you to Haruka, "Blind them!"

As the flask hurtles from your hand down the tunnel, a dazzling burst of light erupts at the mouth of the cave. You manage to avert your eyes just in time to avoid being blinded yourself, and the sound of unearthly shrieking from the direction of the bats gives you the impression that they didn't fare quite so well.

After a moment, you look back to see the results of your attack. Yellow-green flames lick over the bat creature at the mouth of the cave and in patches on the ground around it, and already you can see that much of the guano on the cave floor has ignited. Normal-sized bats swarm in the air, agitated by the sudden disturbance.

You notice that the normal-sized bats also seem to have long, barbed tails.

And none of the bats, regardless of size, seem to be particularly harmed by the flames. Or at least if they are, it certainly isn't stopping the bunch of little ones lit on fire from the burning floor from flying down the tunnel at you...nor the big one from charging, using its folded wings as legs to barrel down on you like some grotesque, flaming ape.

These are definitely no ordinary bats, giant or otherwise.

>What do?
>Give me a roll
>>
Rolled 8

>>24869921
okay, fireproof bats. Someone check for weaknesses!
>>
Rolled 11

>>24869921
Well crap. Plan B anyone?

How's about that blinding idea then see if we can take them down in groups?
>>
>>24869966
We should send in the Harukasans.
>>
Rolled 2

>>24869998
Can Miki's lightning arc of multiple enemies?

That could take care of the small one's, and the large one charging blind could be tripped out by the twins.
>>
Rolled 15

>>24869921
Well that did not do as much as expected, and now we have angry bat swarms with barbed tails on us. Fuck... On the bright side and valuable guano covered treasure is not incinerated.
Take point with Haruka, have Miki try to blow the regular sized bats out of the air or at least away from the party. Slowly pull back up till most or all the giant bats are in the tunnel then have Yukiho collapse the tunnel entrance to the cavern and trap the large bats.
>>
Rolled 10

Retreat to the choke point, take them on in smaller groups or one by one
>>
Rolled 13

>>24870055
Lighting seems like a good plan assuming no arcs to us. As for the blind it did not seem to be too effective the first time plus the twins might not be able to maneuver in the tunnel too well.
>>
>>24870084
Mediocrity! Also yes, 'run away' is a good plan.
>>
>>24870377
Well, situation seems to have turned a bit overwhelming for a party made mainly of rookie girls.
>>
>>24870084
The blinding might help with the falling back. We can try collapsing the tunnel on them but that might be risky.
>>
>>24870084

Have Yukiho summon earth spikes as the big ones come down the tunnel.

We can't catch the small ones but we can strike the big ones with 'em.
>>
>>24870451
We should at least stop more barbed bats form swarming us by closing the cavern opening
>>
>>24869921
>>24870084
Raising your shield and bracing yourself to receive the giant bat's charge, you shout for Miki to deal with the fliers.

The big bat hits you like a pile of bricks, bearing down with the full force of its momentum behind a clawed wing-joint while simultaneously lashing out with its tail. You stagger slightly as the claw impacts your shield, but manage to keep your composure well enough to deflect the tail barb with your sword. A few small bats swoop at you, but their tail-barbs glance harmlessly off your armor.

You see another giant bat rushing down the tunnel, which Haruka steps forward to intercept, and as a blast of wind sends flying bats hurtling out of the air you call for the party to fall back to where the tunnel's narrower.

The bat engaging you lunges forward again with tail and claw, snapping its jaws wildly as it tries to clamber around your shield, and you retaliate with a few jabs to buy yourself some breathing room. Steadily, you work your way back down the tunnel, fending off the big bats on the ground with Haruka while Miki blasts the airborne ones with wind and lightning. Some of the bats break through Miki's assault, eliciting cries from Yukiho and the twins in the rear as they work to fend them off. Behind the two engaging you, you see one more large bat giving chase.
>>
>>24870515
Finally, you reach a point where the tunnel is narrow enough to keep the large bats from coming at you more than one at a time. It's a bit too tight for you and Haruka to fight side-by-side comfortably, but you could possibly manage it.

>[] Gang up on the big bats
>[] Engage the big bats alone, with Haruka providing defensive and healing magic from behind
>[] Other (specify)
>Let me know if you want Miki to do something other than keep dealing with the fliers, or if you have something specific you'd like Yukiho or the twins to do.

>>
>>24870555
>>24870616
You motion for Haruka to get behind you. "I'll handle the fighting, back me up with wards, and healing if needed."

As she gets in position and you deflect another attack from the bat, you call to the back ranks. "Ami, Mami, cover Yukiho from whatever gets past Miki. Yukiho, give me some help with the big ones, stone spikes or something!"

The big bat lunges forward, and just before it reaches you a yellow glow blossoms across your shield and travels up your arm to the shoulder. Your shield arm suddenly feels lighter and less fatigued, and you deflect the attack effortlessly, retaliating with a slice that makes contact with the bat's face. As your blade slides across the bat-creature''s swollen-shut eye, the pustule-ridden eyelid splits apart like the skin of a rotten fruit and a gout of inky black goop spills forth, emitting a stomach-churning stench.

Shrieking, the bat rears back and open its wings, attempting to batter you with them as best it can within the confines of the tunnel. As it rears, a razor-sharp stalagmite erupts from the ground, piercing into the bat's underbelly and then melting back into the floor as quickly as it arose. Bleeding from the puncture wound, the bat staggers back on its hindlimbs a few steps, bumping against its comrade behind it and threatening to fall on its back.

You briefly consider rushing in to take advantage of the opportunity to finish off the bat, but thinking better of it you remain where you're at in the choke point and prepare for a renewed attack. You glance back, thinking perhaps the twins could chuck a few daggers that way while the bat's open for attack, but you see that they have their hand full dealing with fliers. Daggers are a poor weapon for that sort of job, and it looks like their illusions are ignored as often as not. All three of the lightly-armored girls in the back look to have sustained a few nicks and cuts from the fliers...you really hope those tail barbs aren't poisonous or anything.

The wounded giant bat regains its composure, lurching forward once more. Thick, dark red blood drips from the wound on its underbelly in viscid globs, curdling rapidly on contact with the stone below. It hurls itself upon your shield, scrabbling to reach around your shield with fangs, claws, and tail. Gagging on the stench from the blackened, glistening hole where its eye should be, it's all you can do to avoid being overcome by the attack. You stagger backward slightly, but Haruka braces you from behind.

Worst thing is he knocks us down and we get mauled/trampled.

If there's poison (probably will be) our idols are already in some trouble.
>>
>>24871532
>Worst thing
That's not pessimistic enough. Worst case we get knocked down, one of the idols gets a barb through the gut and collapses, and the tiny bats tun out to indeed be poisonous, all while goblins then come to investigate from both ends of the tunnel.
>>
>>24871309
>>24871407
"Keep the magic coming, Haruka" you yell. "Miki too, if you can, some boosts would be nice." Perhaps a long shot given the number of small bats that keep flying overhead, but it's worth asking.

You shove back against the bat, pushing it off you, and wind up a hacking downward blow, attempting to cripple one of its wings. At the last second, the bat pulls away and lashes out at your leg with its tail, scoring a painful blow through the gaps in the armor at your knee. Your leg buckles, and the bat quickly follows with a sideways blow from its wing claw that tears into your upper arm and knocks you to the floor. Lurching forward, the bat moves to pin.

>Another roll, please.
>Suggested actions beyond the obvious "don't get pinned and eaten by the giant devil-bat" are welcome, but optional. You can probably count on Haruka stepping in to help, so don't worry about that unless you have a specific idea of how she should help.

Twisting around, you bring your shield forward to bash the bat as it lunges for you, striking it just as Haruka clocks it a solid thwack with her mace from the other side. The bat reels backward, stumbling dizzily, and you leap to your feet to finish it off with a stab penetrating deep past its collarbone. The bat collapses, gurgling weakly, to the ground.

By now, the swarm of fliers has started to thin out. You hear Miki call out, "Producer, I can give you that boost now, nano!"

"Great!"

In a few moments, you feel a gentle breeze wash over you, and your limbs shimmer briefly with a faint green glow. Feeling lighter and more nimble, you have no difficulty at all evading the next bat's tail as it lashes out at you, bounding over the body of its fallen comrade. This one's eyes are both intact, though its face is nonetheless ridden with large oozing pustules. The new bat lashes out with a wing claw, but you nimbly sidestep and return with a deft jab in the exposed side of its chest.

"Alright girls, back me up with whatever you got, let's finish these things!"

A soft rumbling heralds the growth of a stone spike, shooting out of the ground, but the bat nimbly hops aside. Lightning crackles overhead, arcing downward toward the bat, but misses the mark by scant inches.

Screaming furiously, flecks of spittle flying from its jagged fangs, the bat lunges forward.

You continue slicing away at the bat, barely managing to score a few more superficial hits between fending off its assaults. Miki continues to throw the occasional lightning bolt at the giant bat between picking off the remaining fliers, and Yukiho conjures a few more spikes, but none of them manage to connect. It seems to be getting worn down, but it's a close fight -- you imagine if it weren't for Haruka's defensive ward on your shield and Miki's agility boost you'd be on the losing end.

Bonking producer on the head. Again.

Haruka ;_;

If we go by QM order its Yukiho and Miki. Seems magic will save the day. Meanwhile everyone else will be beaten down.

It IS haruka.

Moving to press the attack, you find your progress arrested as Haruka, yelping in surprise, stumbles into you, knocking you both to the ground.

"Sorry Producer," she says as you untangle yourselves from each other. "There was a bat flying at my face and I was trying to get rid of it and kind of got tangled up on my own feet..."

Fortunately, the remaining giant bat proves unable to take advantage of the accident, as it finds itself quite preoccupied with a barrage of lightning bolts and stone spikes from Miki and Yukiho.

Leaping nimbly atop the corpses of the two fallen bats, you call back to your party. "Press forward! There's only one left, let's get to where we can gang up on it!"

You spy a flash of golden yellow light spreading across the ground from behind you, and with a rumble the tunnel floor lurches upward, pitching the bat back down toward the wider portion of the tunnel with a wavelike motion. Shouting back a "good job!" to Yukiho, you charge ahead after the bat, Haruka and Miki hot on your heels and filing in beside you when you reach the wider part of the tunnel.

You strike the first blow against the bat, crashing against it with your shield and following up with a raking cut as you nimbly circle around it to give Haruka and Miki more room. Miki strikes next, having outrun Haruka by a hair and taking advantage of her weapon's reach. She delivers a deep cut to the bat's shoulder, leaving the wing all but useless. Haruka is the last to arrive, scoring a solid hit with her mace that sends the bat reeling.

Between the three off you, the bat is overwhelmed. It's Miki who lands the finishing blow, splitting the bat's ribcage wide open when it rears back to try to lash out with its good wing. Disturbingly, the wound spills forth a mass of bizarre tentacle-like protrusions, which writhe for a few moments before growing still. There is no sign of normal organs to be seen within the wound.

"Yep, that cinches it," you mutter.

"Take a careful look, girls. These things were almost certainly demon-tainted. Totally out of place for the environment, aggressive beyond all sense of self-preservation, disgusting diseases and deformities, and totally bizarre internal anatomy...all classic signs of demonic corruption."

"Nii-chan," Ami asks. "Does that mean these used to be regular bats?"

"Yep. It also means that there's a source of demonic influence in these caves. And I've got a hunch it's got something to do with that room we're heading for."

Haruka asks, "Producer, does that mean we could get corrupted too?"

"Only if we decided to live down here. It takes awhile for demon-taint to set in, at least for humans. Wildlife gets corrupted quicker, for some reason."

"W-will we have to fight a demon? I don't think I can handle a d-demon..." Yukiho is blanching considerably.

"If it's a full-fledged demon, I don't think any of us can," you tell her. "Pray that you never have to do that. But it takes a lot to summon a full-fledged demon, and it's possible this could just be the result of residual taint from witchcraft that was done in these caves ages ago. It's unlikely that we'll really need to worry about it."
"So, that aside, how's everyone doing after that last fight? Any serious injuries?"

It appears that nobody's suffered any particularly serious injuries, but Yukiho and Mami complain of an odd sort of itching, burning sensation around some of the deeper wounds they got from the flying bats. You ask Mami to show you where exactly the problem is, and have Haruka do the same for Yukiho.

You find that the offending wounds are surrounded by rather large red patches, and what looks to be the beginnings of a bumpy red rash. Haruka confirms the same on Yukiho.

"Hm...could be those tail barbs were poisonous. Haruka, can you do anything about poison?"

"It's a lot trickier than healing wounds, but I think I can do it," she replies.

"Good. Let's not waste any time on this, poison is nothing to mess with."

"It might take a lot of mana, depending on how strong the poison is..."

"Doesn't matter. Healing potions are only good for injuries, so your magic's all we've got."

Haruka sets to work tending to the wounds in question, then once finished she turns to you.

"By the way, Producer, didn't you get stung pretty badly too? Are you feeling ok?"

"Just fine," you tell her with a smile. "Or, well, no worse than any other puncture wound. Probably a dry sting. Or maybe I'm just tough enough that my body just shrugged off the poison, haha!"

Haruka insists on healing your knee wound, just to be safe, and patches up your other scrapes and bruises besides. Then, everyone's injuries dealt with, you continue on your way toward the room with the statues.
>>
>>24873686
Those don't sound particularly good. The rashes. Doesn't seem like Producer has them though.

I know it's a little earlier than normal, but I think that's a good place to leave off for tonight. I was hoping to get farther than this, but that fight with the bats took way longer than intended (I probably ought to rethink how I'm interpreting dice rolls), and I don't think I'd be able to remain coherent long enough to get us to the next good stopping point.

As always, feedback is greatly appreciated, and I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone has.
>>
>>24873786

It was mostly the Dice Gods fault. I like battlin' tonight though, felt like a good change of pace.

Are you available next week QM?
>>
>>24873786

I'm wondering if there's a way of making this bit more skill based or strategy based but still simple and quick. The problem with dice is that it's almost too completely up to chance whether we succeed or not.
>>
>>24873786
It was an exciting session!

Also, good work on those pastebin texts.
>>
>>24873786
The dice were certainly not kind today. But it was eventful which is good. I'm hoping we close this quest off during the next session but only events will dictate how it'll go.

Some nice imagery today as well. Those corrupted bats were quite interesting. I'm not sure I can interpret them but i'll try anyways.
>>
>>24873786

Thanks QM.

See you next week!

Get a twitter, man.
>>
>>24873786
While I understand the reasoning lessening the damage from bad rolls in such a long scenario caused by bad rolls it just felt very unfrightening after a while. Suppose looking at how you interpret rolls will change this.
>>
>>24873816
Ah yes, next week should probably be a Friday night session, I think. Can't say 100% for sure yet, but that's what it's looking like.

Incidentally, I've been wondering if I shouldn't get a Twitter to handle schedule announcements, rather than relying on /@/. Any /tg/ players who don't regularly visit /@/ around to weigh in on that?

>>24873846
Generally the way I'm kind of approaching it is that strategy considerations shape the general sorts of things that might occur (and thus might outright preclude really terrible outcomes) and, if it's a particularly good strategy, weight my assessment of the dice appropriately.
The main thing I realized with this session is that I probably shouldn't have a margin where you succeed, but just barely. And I also should probably make failure have more consistently significant setbacks. A nice sliding scale that proceeds smoothly from fantastic success through barely passable to miserable failure is good for a tabletop RPG, but maybe not so much for a quest thread where a single dice roll takes 20-30 minutes in real time to resolve. And there are certain aspects of the stats system I'm using that also don't work well with that sort of framework.
>>
>>24873971

I say go ahead a make a twitter if you want. It's something that takes seconds to update and completely optional to follow.

>>24873905
To be perfectly straight with you, there actually were hardly any actual failures in today's session based on the stats I'm using. A lot of very mediocre successes, but very few failures. P has pretty good combat stats, and with buffs added on top of that it's actually pretty hard for him to fail. The back ranks failed on their assistance rolls a few times, but because of the choke-point strategy I had trouble thinking of any real setbacks to attach to that on the spot. In retrospect, some sort of magic backlash could've worked (I know I've used mistargeting before, but I'm trying to use that sparingly because I feel it'd give an impression of incompetence on the part of the mages if I use it a lot), but that didn't really cross my mind.

The failures that were there were pretty mild as far as consequences from them goes, but that wasn't really so much because of going easy or anything, but rather because I'd been thinking of a sliding scale of failure where barely missing the target means only a minor setback and the severity of the consequences increases the more you miss. Which, as I mentioned, I'm now realizing is a bad way to approach dice for a quest thread specifically.
>>
>>24873971

Maybe you can "assign" certain strategies a "score" to be rolled against based on effectiveness. You don't have to tell us the grad of course.

For example a good thought out plan (or correct choice under multiple choice) gets a 15 and anything rolled under that succeeds.

A derp one gets like a 6 and needs to be under that to be effective.

Success is more cut and dry, either you do the action or you fail. It might be more objective than to rely mostly on freeforming it and risk long drag outs.
>>
>>24874178
Well, right now I'm basing what you need to roll based on the character stats, with modifiers for things like circumstances, good/bad strategy, etc. I could probably stand to be more liberal with applying those circumstantial modifiers, though.

I do agree that success and failure need to be more clearly differentiated. I'm definitely going to be removing that middle zone of "you succeeded/failed, but just barely, so there's not much significant change". Because apparently, /tg/ dice like to hit that zone, and even hitting it once basically just wastes a whole post. Going nowhere really shouldn't even be an option on the table as far as the flow of combat in a quest goes; you can go somewhere good, or somewhere bad, but either way you gotta keep moving.
It's a learning process.
