Predator Quest: Episode 16

You are Three-Claw, a Yautja hunter of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been tasked by your clan Matriarch to embark on a hunt on the world of Fey'lenn, or Pandora, as it is known to humans.

The previous quest thread was not archived, due to suptg being down.

In summary, we went to the market and purchased some gear, including several upgrades to our ship.

For our ship, we added:

1. Chin mounted plasma gatling gun (with AP shells)
2. Upgraded targeting systems for point defense
3. Upgraded engine to be more stealthy

We also upgraded our light armor to have chain mesh and extra plates for boots/arms.

We also purchased a shredder disc.

We have 6000 cr left.

You spend some time making small-talk with your mother, and manage to pick up a few bits here and there regarding clan administration and politics.

Soon, you begin talking about your mission, and what the Matriarch has planned for you. She is somewhat concerned at first, but you ally her fears and assure her that you're up to the task.

You decide to spend some time in seeking her advice.

Do you want to spend the time discussing:

A. Her advice on putting together a team of hunters, as per the Matriarch's request.
B. Her advice on working with other clans.

>A

You ask for her advice on putting together a team of hunters, as per the Matriarch's request.

She thinks about it for a moment, then says, "This is a delicate situation. Remember that these will be hunters and warriors who you must depend on to watch your back. I would recommend you choose hunters from our own clan, but that may not be in line with the Matriarch's diplomatic goals in this venture.

"Regardless, choose at least one hunter from our own clan. Make sure it's someone dependable and loyal to you - someone capable of watching your back in more ways than just in combat. As for the others... DON'T choose anyone from the Night-Prowlers. They're likely still sore, and while I'm certain their hunters will abide by codes of honor, you don't need that problem."

She pauses, taps at her computer, and adds, "If you'd like, I can approach a few of the elders within the clan on your behalf and send you a few promising candidates from their student rosters."

Do you:

A. Take her up on the offer
B. Politely refuse - you'll seek them out yourself.
>>

B. Politely refuse - you'll seek them out yourself.

I think this is a job better done in person rather than hiding behind our mothers skirt.

>>24874659

I-I feel so in the dark. We did we discuss with the Matriarch last time? What's the plan?
>>
>>24874659
B. We need to make sure the hunters amount to our standards. We don't need no square pegs in round holes.
>>
>>24874682
Technically it's within her duties as the executrix, there'd be 0 shame from it as this is a mission/hunt sanctioned by multiple clans.

"I am here to give you a hand with the training," you tell your mentor.

"Ah, good." He points to the young student beside him. "Three-Claw, meet Sharp-Strike." I'm convinced he is half blind. Today is disc day, and he is the only one of his class still here because he cannot seem to throw straight."

He taps the young hunter in the chest and points to a holo target in the distance, behind two plates with a thin slit in the middle. "Try it again."

You watch as Sharp-Strike readies the disc and clumsily throw it forwards. The disc wobbles as it leaves his flight and bounces off the metal plates with a sharp clang.

Do you:

A. Show him how it's done by example. (DC: Easy)
B. Critique his technique and explain to him gently on how it's done.
C. Scold him.

>>A. Show him how it's done by example. (Pass)

You take a second practice disc from the weapons rack and flex your arm. You bend your elbow and flick your wrist in one smooth motion. The disc sails forward with blinding speed, passes through the metal slit, strikes the holo-target, and returns smoothly to your hand.

Sharp-Strike looks at you with awe. "How did you do that?"

You take some time to guide him through it and explain in detail the full process. After a few practice throws, he finally manages to nail the holo-target. You still notice quite a bit of wobbling in flight, and you tell him that to keep practicing.

Your mentor claps your shoulder and leads you to his ready room, while the student continues his practice.

"Not a bad lad, that one. Good endurance, fast runner, good climber... but half blind sometimes. Now, what's next?"

"I was hoping for your wisdom in leadership and team building," You tell him.

He clicks in acknowledgement, and speaks to you about his experiences as a hunting team leader. You listen carefully. He concludes by saying, "Well, it all comes down to trust. You need to build trust. Generally, there are two ways to go about this. You can either form a mentor-apprentice relationship with your teammates, and lead by virtue of seniority, or you can choose to lead by personality and charisma. Seek the best of both. Take one of my students with you, we'll consider it to be a blooding, and a more senior hunter from another clan, that would be my advice."

>>B. Ask him to recommend one of his students.

You thank your mentor and ask him to recommend one of his students.

Your mentor thinks for a moment, and says,

"Well, there's Sharp-Strike, the lad with the bad throw. Despite his aiming abilities, he's got the knack for being a scout. He can run for hours without tiring, is very observant, and can hold his own with a combi-stick. Don't let him near anything ranged and he should be fine. Plus, he's a humble lad, and good at taking orders."

He thinks about it some more. "Well, there's also Spear-Eye, a cocky upstart with an awful sense of humor. A decent brawler, that one. Very strong. Very agile. But he's always looking for approval, and chances to prove himself. Not a bad choice, and if you can get him to look up to you, well, you'll have a hard time getting him to leave you alone."

"Ah, also, Blade-Tip. Good, quiet lad. Excellent marksman, but has an awful case of tunnel vision. Give him a target and he'll take it down for certain, ignoring everything else. Has a likeable personality, but might require some babysitting in the field to be useful."

Now, which one of these would you like me to arrange a one-on-one meeting for?

A. Sharp-Strike

Hmm.
Sharp would be good, but it would be a problem if we were trying to go ranged.

>>

Ashen blade has his own ship and will be representing his own clan. Now that we own our own ship (not just a loaner) we are responsible for bringing younger hunters on hunts with us *if* we want to, Sharp-strike has a level head and that's the most important quality in something that's going to be a real shitshow like this likely will be.

Fey'linn is too dangerous for ego driven glory-hounds, and may well get an unblooded with tunnel vision killed. Given that the general state of most young yaujta is 'cocky and arrogant to extremes' a humble unblooded is *very* rare.

You ask your mentor to arrange a meeting between you and Sharp-Strike.

Your mentor agrees. You notice the day is getting late, and so you bid your master farewell and return home.

You sleep soundly.

It is the next day.

You wake up and check your wrist computer.

You see a summon from the Matriarch scheduled for the afternoon.

You see a summon from your mentor for anytime today.

You see a note from the weapons technician, informing you he has started work on your ship.

It is early in the morning.

Do you:

>>A. Visit your mentor

You make your way to the training grounds, and greet your mentor. He invites you into the dojo, and once more introduces you to Sharp-Strike. The young hunter quickly stands to attention.

"Sharp-Strike," he informs his student, "This is Three-Claw. High hunter of our clan."

Sharp-Strike shuffles his feet nervously.

"He is looking for an apprentice on his next mission, and you're one of the many, many, many candidates," your mentor continues. "Try not to embarrass yourself." He turns to you, and bids you good luck. "I'll be in the yard looking after the rest of my flock," he tells you. He exits the dojo and closes the door behind him.

You look at Sharp-Strike, and see him shuffle nervously.

Do you:

A. Begin by asking him to demonstrate his close combat prowess on a holo-dummy.

You hand the spear back to him. "This is a test," you tell him. "Give it your all."

He takes the combi-stick, hesitates for a moment, and adopts a combat position. He lunges at you again. This time, you hear the sharp whistle of the air as the tip springs towards you.

"Good!" you cry, and dodge quickly to the side, this time with far more effort. You whip your hand at the spear and attempt give it a sharp pull. He holds his own, however, and you find his grip to be surprisingly strong. You were not able to disarm him this time.

He withdraws his thrust, flourishes briefly, and attacks again with a quick swipe. Again, you hear the stick whistle sharply through the air.

You dodge and weave through this attacks, and not without effort. If you did not know your mentor's style so well, you surmise, your skin would be full of welts by now.

You notice his footwork is solid - favoring balance and strength over fancy maneuvers and speed. His attacks are well organized and carries good strength behind it, but they lack flexibility and improvisation. You slowly press forward and goad him into an overhead attack. Familiar with your mentor's style, you know exactly how the attack will proceed.

You quickly spin out of the way, push outward with your arms, and expect to catch the attack on the down-swing. However, the spear's direction suddenly changes midway and comes at you from an unexpected direction.

You quickly lunge forward out of sheer reflex, but suddenly feel a sharp pain catch your ankle.

You tumble, lose your footing, and fall. You quickly roll to the side and stand up again.

Sharp-Strike dashes back and holds his weapon in front of him defensively, not sure what to do next.

You stand up.

You did well - much better than I expected. You should be proud of yourself. That last swing - I'm not familiar with it. I was expecting an overhead smash, but you transitioned it into a swipe instead. Did you learn that, or was it an improvisation?"

Strike-Spear beams. "I learned that from Master Bane-Hammer." He rubs his head. "He taught me to use it when I'm running out of room to maneuver. Says it'll put the opponent off his guard."

You click with amusement. "Good work," you tell him, "it certainly caught me off-guard."

You ask Strike-Spear to run through it. He acknowledges, and moves toward the entrance. He seems more confident now.

You look at the obstacle course settings, and find four difficulty settings which changes the height and width of the obstacles. You recall running through it at medium without much difficulty, back when you first started.

You tune the setting to Hard, and watch as the height and width of the obstacles adjust themselves to match.

You observe as Sharp-Strike takes a running start and leaps onto the first climbing harness. He scales it with some effort, pulls himself up to the crow's nest, and quickly moves across the tight-rope. He makes his way across, while holding his balance, and takes a flying leap through the air and catches several protrusions on the vertical wall. He descends the cliff, and finds himself at the artificial forest. You watch as he climbs to the top of the first tree and bound quickly across from one tree to the other.

The next section is a series of narrow beams in a maze pattern suspended over water.

You notice a setting in the obstacle course to cover the beams with slicks of oil, making it vastly more difficult.

Do you press it?

Also - take our mentors advice to heart, "He clicks in acknowledgement, and speaks to you about his experiences as a hunting team leader. Take one of my students with you, we'll consider it to be a blooding, and a more senior hunter from another clan, that would be my advice.""

You refrain from making it more difficult, and watch as he balances himself on the narrow beams while navigating the maze with some effort.

>>B. Tune it to rain

You tune it for rain. Nozzles extend from the ceiling and water spews forth form them. The young hunter and the cliff he's scaling become drenched.

You recall your mentor's teachings, and understand that climbing a sheer cliff in the rain is as much a test of patience as it is skill. You have to proceed carefully, and secure each hold with extra effort.

You watch as Sharp-Strike slows his pace and methodically put one arm above the other, slowly but surely pressing onward through the rain. At last, he reaches the top, and the end of the course. He dries himself off and exits.

You note his time. It's somewhat slower than the course record, but then, you did add that bit of extra difficulty in the end.

You see him approach you.

Do you:

A. Congratulate him on a job well done.
B. Tell him his performance was adequate, but fieldwork is vastly different from a practice course.

You lead him to the targeting range and ask him to show you his skills with ranged weapons.

He lowers his head, and agrees, reluctantly.

You setup a holo target at medium range and hand him a spear-gun. He takes it, shoulders it. You wait as he lines up his shot. Almost a minute passes before he presses the trigger. The shot goes wide and misses the target by a large margin.

He puts the gun down and looks at you helplessly.

You attempt to give him a quick shooting lesson and reassure him, but the result is the same - a wide miss.

I'm getting legitimately curious as to what his problem is. He's displayed patience and hand-eye coordination in the other tests, and his ineptitude clearly isn't for lack of trying. Did this guy have a horrible accident involving projectile weaponry as a kid or something?

>>
>>24877082
>It's just to balance out stutter-tan so he isn't the most superior choice of all the unblooded
>>
>>24877089
Its clearly a low powered practice caster
>>
>>24877089
>WAT R MASKS

Yaujta are allowed to *practice* with casters unblooded, they aren't allowed to own or use them until they're blooded. By taking him to pandora with us, we're giving him the opportunity to blood himself (a great honor for both us and him), it also means we carry the responsibility of presenting him with a caster (and possibly another weapon). Better masks and better caster designs can help fix his problem to some extent
>>
>>24877105
>they aren't allowed to own or use them (on hunts) until they're blooded*

They're less hunting weapons and more 'personal safety device'. A hunter will almost never use them on things they intend to take trophy from because it's unsporting and not fun. But they're perfectly allowed to use them to even odds or kill things they're not hunting.
>>
>>24877047
Honestly, I think we need to first test this guy's vision.

Do the Yuat-Ja even have glasses?

Can vision masks be modified to have the same effect as glasses?
>>

>>24877064
>>B. Loan him your vision mask and ask him to take a tracked shot.

You loan him your mask and fit it over his face. You synchronize the vision systems to his wrist computer and the plasma-caster.

You ask him to lock the target and take a shot.

He turns to the target. You notice the three-dotted targeting beam flicker around the target. At last, a shot is loosed from the cannon and grazes the edge of the target.

You hold his shoulder steady and orders him to keep his head still when aiming. He complies, and fires a second shot. It hits the target square on. He clicks in sharp surprise.

You spend some more time with him at the range, and try out a variety of targets, both stationary and moving. Slowly, he becomes used to the targeting system, and you manage to get him to hit 9 out of 10 stationary targets and 5 out of 10 moving targets.

You finally ask him to put away the plasma-caster and take your mask back.

He hangs his head again. "I... I'm not really sure. Mentor says I have trouble bracing my head. I try to practice hard, but I never improve."

Do you:

A. Clap him on the shoulder and tell him he'll get the hang of it some day.
B. Tell him to just stick to close range from now on.
C. Tell him you'll help him train from now on, and help him get better.

Based on that, if I had to take a guess, I'd say he's trying too hard. He gets nervous and clenches his muscles too hard, which gives him the shakes. Next time he does ranged weapon training, tell him to relax and have him do some kind of meditation to calm his nerves beforehand.

Sharp-Strike straightens himself and snaps his head up. "Thank you, sir! I will do my best."

You signal your mentor on your wrist-computer, telling him you've concluded the session.

The dojo door opens, and Jackal-of-Carrion walks in.

He tells the beaming young hunter to go take a rest, and turns to you.

"Good choice. I can't say I'm happy to see him go, as I was hoping to sponsor his blooding myself, but he'll do just fine with you. Take good care of him; he's got potential, that one."
