>Firebender Quest Episode 2
You are Maro of Jin. Murderer of Ten Ping. Wielder of Lightning, Infamously whispered around your dojo as "Maro of Lightning".

It has been four days since the end of your agni kai duel with the student named Ten Ping. It has been four days since you murdered a man. It has been four days since you surrendered to the monks who sought to subdue you and bring you to the small holding cell in the dojo of Centered Flame, where they would decide your fate. It has been four days since you were first asked exactly what you did to create the lightning that killed your peer... and you were unable to answer.

It has been five minutes since the most senior monks have entered the holding cell below the temple, allowing you to plead your case before deciding your ultimate fate. You are asked the question of "Why, did you kill Ten Ping"

How do you answer
[ ] "I do not know"
[ ] "He was a lout, and a threat"
[ ] "The techniques he was performing in agni kai were filled with lethal intent - I was defending myself".

Yes. We should say this. "I... didn't realize that my attack would be that deadly."

Ten Ping meant to send us home in shame.

We sent him home in a box.
>>
>>24908398
Several of the head monks nod sagely, they seem to accept this. One steps forward and states "I was prepared to intervene and put a stop to the whole challenge, Ten Ping had broken the rules of the challenge, but you reacted with skill... I stayed my hand because I thought you capable of managing the danger".

A different master suggests that you killed him over the threat he made to your family, not being fully convinced of your answer.

You are asked once again what you did to create lightning... and you still do not have an answer. The council of Masters seems frustrated by this, and one storms out of the room in exasperated fury.

The remaining monks ask you "Why did you not come to us over the antagonism between Ten Ping and yourself before".

How do you answer?
[ ] Confront the monks on favoritism and corruption.
[ ] Dissemble, and say that there were no serious problems between you and Ten Ping.
>>
>>24908738
Confront
>>
>>24908738
>[x] Dissemble, and say that there were no serious problems between you and Ten Ping.
"There may have been some conflict, but I never thought it was severe enough to lead to bloodshed. I did not mean to kill him. I wasn't even certain that I could win the agni kai."
>>
>>24908738
Dissemble, confront would give them a reason to suspect our intentions more.
>>
>>24908738
Confront, Ren Zhao had said that the masters let ten ping get away with all sorts of shit, they have no reason to still play favorites if he's dead.
>>
>>24908795
Plus, confront doesn't fit with the calm Iroh-style character everyone was so intent on.
>>
>>24908756

[ ] Dissemble, and say that there were no serious problems between you and Ten Ping.

Ten, knew we were a calm bender, I knew any thing he was saying was to get me off my focus. but the way he did attacks me was shocking I reacted, and I don't know how it worked.
>>
>>24908756
>>24908813
Listen y'all, we're calm Iroh-man stylin' we don't confront.
>>
>>24908818
Iroh would have been able to put forth an unpopular truth in a way that did not offend.
>>
>>24908738
[X] Confront the monks on favoritism and corruption.

"I already had told some of who he was and how he acted, but no action was ever taken. Any with eyes who chose to look could see his arrogance and how he blatantly ignored rules of conduct for his own amusement.

But such is life, I am but one man, I moved past my dislike of him. There is no benefit in holding onto hatred.

Despite who he was and our conflict I had no desire to kill him. If I had meant to kill him I would not have done it during an agni kai, that would be true idiocy."
>>
>>24908855
Then can we dissemble while subtly hinting at possible corruption to probe for their reactions?
>>
>>24908855
Except this particular unpopular truth's family may hear about everything we say here. We don't need to... fan the flames.

We should probably hide any accusations we make behind flowery language and metaphor. Speak of the royal family as some kind of tree and Ten Ping as a branch of the tree and speak of a gardener preserving a gnarled branch of the oak while ignoring the willow.

Or flowers, you can do it with flowers or different tree types.
>>
>>24909040
We could make a pretty bad grafting metaphor to call him a bastard.
>>
"The problems between myself and Ten Ping were not so serious that I could not deal with them myself. The problems between Ten Ping and more junior students, or those he was more skilled or powerful then were far worse, I do not pretend to know the scope of all of his actions, but I remember seeing a girl he 'favored' with his attention being turned away from a Master in tears... with a black eye that did not come from any training session. I recall that she left the dojo shortly after to return home" You state calmly.

"What are you saying Maro", one master says, while shaking ever so slightly in what appears to be rage.

"I am saying that while I did not have problems with Ten Ping, others did, and when they reported them nothing was done because of how close Ten Ping sat to the throne of the firelord. I recall hearing whispered rumor that the same student who left the school... had been forced... by ten ping".

The master who had been trembling before, now steps forward and strikes you in outright fury... before being pulled back by the others and forced out of the room.

Another master kneels in front of you "You are right, we favored Ten Ping. We did not respond to the problems he had caused... We will need some time to think on the issues you have raised".

And with that all the masters leave the room, you are brought a small meal - you do not know if it is lunch or supper as you have not seen the sun for four days. You eat and doze off, only to be awoken by a sad looking Ren Zhao, standing in front of the wooden bars of the prison you could easily break out of.

He hands you a letter, bearing your family seal. "Happy birthday my Pupil".

Before even taking the letter into your hands, you smell the familiar smells of chrysanthemum and cinnamon, you know immediately that it was your tutor who penned this letter. Opening it, you are greeted with her familiar script... The letter starts with a happy birthday from your father Maru, and your Mother Sho, stating that they're proud of you and that they hope for you to be able to return home within the year... It continues with messages from your sister Pan who even through your tutor's script projects the sheer excitability that your tutor so often found exasperating... after the formalities within a long letter are met, it details that before you return home you are to meet your sister in the city of Shen Jiao, because she is to be married to ... You cannot make the name out, it seems a watermark has rendered it unreadable. The letter continues with a message from Rokan, about your upcoming graduation and the hopes that you perform as well as she did in her agni kai.

You continue to turn the multi-page letter over, until you come to an incredibly skilled sketch of your whole family, and another one noting it is a self-sketch from rokan, done in front of her personal mirror in your rooms next to the courtyard.

You begin to tear up.

"Master... I'd like to know what the monks have decided before I am to strip naked, I have been generous enough to remain in this cell for four days... and I do feel guilt over the accident, but I *will* have an answer as to what is to happen to me". You state sternly.

"Remain calm Maro, I will explain. There are two major factions within the masters at the temple - those who are sycophants to the firelords throne and any who are close to it, these are the same people who have clamored loudly to hold you until retribution from ten pings family arrives. Then there are the Masters who believe as I do that were it any other student but Ten Ping - who has been sheltered from any repercussions for his actions for seemingly his whole life, including attempted rape, threats of murder and other nonsense - this would merely be reported to the family involved as a tragic accident. Fortunately my faction has managed to reason with the others this time, you are to be released and sent from here in disguise"

But I do have concerns. If we're leaving in disguise, there is to be a reason. Are we about to have this framed as an escape and we'll be stuck as murderers on the run? I suspect yes.

You remove your clothes, and Ren Zhao promptly incinerates them. A change of clothes is brought in... You recognize them as the robes of a mendicant monk, you are to be set free as a wandering beggar.

"The majority of my brothers agreed that the accident was far too public to ever cover up, sooner or later someone would speak to the house of Ten, whether it be students or one of the monks. Through setting you loose like this, we can still report to the house of ten - keeping almost everyone satisfied." Ren explains as you get dressed.

"And what happens after - am I to be framed for escape?" you question

"Certainly there is no way we can prevent some from telling the truth... but we can obfuscated the path to you with lies. Everyone has been given a role, some will speak the truth for we cannot stop them, others will say you escaped to prevent execution, a few will say various masters broke you out, others will say fellow students broke you out as Ten Ping was not well liked"

"... Where will I go?"
"Wherever you choose, I recommend heading to shen jiao in disguise however, it has always been hospitable to the wanderers in our order. Seek out the House of White Tiles, it is an inn" And with that Ren Zhao pulls you into a large hug

"You have been my greatest student. I do not know how you created lightning, but I think amazing... I want you to take the teapot here, as a memento of me - you may not be able to contact this school for some time"

"It was an honor to be your student master, I will gladly accept the gift you present me with".

"Good, because I've got more!" Ren grins as he escorts you out of your cell "there's no point in having a teapot if you have no tea to drink it with... Here is the remainder of my stock of tea leaves from Jin" he points to a roped bundle that must be at least twenty pounds of compressed tea leaves.

"Master... this is too much" you protest
"I will not take no for an answer Maro" Zhao says sternly. He goes on to explain that he also wandered as a mendicant monk for a time though it did not suit him... and he presents you with his old staff of rings. He also hands you a small bundle, checking inside you find 10 fire koku... an incredible amount.

"The other monks of my faction pooled that together - we are sending you out in disguise as a wandering beggar... that money is to be an absolute last resort... I have one more request of you"

"What is it master?"

"I want you to attone for the sin of murder upon your soul. Do good where you can, and fight evil when you meet it... your gift of lightning is special, you can do great things with it if you only have the will to apply it"

It is late in the afternoon as Ren Zhao escorts you through the complex - you see no other faces, this route must have been planned by the monks. Your stomach grumbles, and you suddenly wish master Ren Zhao had given you something more than just tea leaves. Wandering off the path to forage for some food, you pick some berries you know are edible.... and you quickly come upon what looks like a forest garden with a nearby stream... Pulling a few tubers and vegetables out of the ground , you rinse them in the stream and thank the sun that you took the teapot - it's large enough to make a small stew from just what you've found in the forest garden.

You cook and eat and feast like a hermit king... and the smell of your meal quite quickly attracts a scavenger. A lost looking guineapigbat with a piece of cloth around its stomach flies slowly into the camp, attracted by the smell of cooking food.

Where else can one find Avatar-world style bastardized creatures with pictures?
>>
>>24911683
>I'm sorry - where did I say that i was doing that? I chose a representation that was closest to what I had in mind for the creature. Mentally combine a guinneapig with a bat - you probably ended up with something like patamon. In this particular case the critter cannot do any form of bending, but animals being able to bend isn't exactly a strange part of avatarverse, look at dragons, sky bison, molebadgers etc.
>>
>>24911713
You said it in the post I linked to. The part about not fucking with the foreshadowing implied that this thing is going to burp up some air bullets. Just like Patamon.

The issue wasn't that some animals can bend, anyone that's watched Avatar knows that. It's that this thing was starting to look like a 100% rip of something from Digimon shoved into Avatar.

I'm sure you can see why that would be troubling, but you've just said this isn't the case, so I'll drop it.

Gently plucking the now sleeping guinneapigbat off of your shoulder and placing it an area where it cannot get wet, you whisper "Sleep my little friend, I have some bending practice to do".

You walk to a clearing you passed in your foraging... you close your eyes and slowly enter a meditative state, where you feed all your emotion to the flame in the center of your soul. The sky strikes first, but you do not let this disrupt you, you take your stance and begin to generate energy in slow circular movements, you touch the two first fingers of your left hand together with the two first fingers of your right hand together and stepping into a forward stance you thrust your right arm forward and your left arm backwards... and you trade lightning with the sky.

The dance begins with that motion, and it lasts for two hours... apparently you find lightning effortless when you get to practice it. You bow to the sky and thank it for allowing you your opportunity to practice, you admire the grace of its fury and promise to put words to it in a poem someday.

>Maro has no difficulty generating lightning at will, but he has yet to develop any advanced techniques with it.

You return to the clearing and find your little friend still sleeping, despite the thunder and lightning.

You're disguised as a monk - people will address you with honorifics, and shen jiao is a big enough city that you won't have to worry about people identifying you unless you perform lightning or break the tenets of a wandering monk. Firebending is perfectly fine though as it's not strange for a wandering monk to do.

Picking up your tiny friend and holding him in one hand, you create a flame with your other and use it to search for suitable shelter. Without too much difficulty, you manage to find one and with a quick blast of fire you chase off any nibbling tiger beetles and other insects that would otherwise disrupt your sleep. You grab a few pieces of fallen wood and build a small fire at the front of the cave and go to sleep.

In the morning you are awoken by the guinneapigbat alternating between tugging on your cheeks and rubbing the cloth on its stomach like it's hungry while chittering the whole time. You pull out a carrot you stashed in your robes and head back onto the road...

After a few hours of walking you hit the outskirts of shen jiao. It is still early enough to beg like a proper monk.

As you head into Shen Jiao on the pilgrim road, you quickly link up with some other travelers, mostly farmers bringing crops or crafts in for sale at the markets.

One sends a child towards you with an applepear, which you graciously accept in exchange for a blessing. You continue into the city through the pilgrim gate and you see two guards chatting, you approach them to ask for some directions.

"That lightning storm last night was something else wasn't it... I swear I counted twice the number of lightning strikes as I did thunderclaps". Your blood freezes in its veins

The Wire.

Omar is a guy who goes around sticking up drug dealers with a shotgun and stealing their product.

Goes around whistling Farmer in the Dell/Den
>>

Omar was a character from The Wire. He robbed drug dealers with a shotgun and everyone was scared of him.

"T-th-th-the lady over there has just decided to buy all of my applepears... and all the land around me for 6 miles to produce more... I'll be able to hire servants of my own an-an-and I'll be able to put my s-s-son into one of the schools!"

"I am happy for you, fabulous displays of wealth truly mark the nobility... might I suggest that you send your son to the monks of the centered flame? I imagine with the influence of a local noble your son could get tutelage under the monks".

"R-r-r-really? they'd do that?"
"I cannot promise that, but i know that they accept a few nonbender students each year, more if they have a patron. I think the ladies word should suffice if I have guessed her right".

"How can we ever repay you?"
"Lead a good life, do not bend to the whims of the temporary... and tell me where the house of white tiles is".

It turns out the farmer knows exactly where it is and is more than happy to provide you with directions.

"Though I do not look it lady, I am a poet and a singer - I would have your name so that it may be turned into art and song, and lifted in praise to the celestials of the sun that they may know your generosity before it is returned to you".

The lady blushes "My name is Fire-Upon-Snow".
"And the heavens shall know it". You bow and head off towards the house of White Tiles. It is an exceptionally large building, noted for the white glass tiles it uses on its roof, and the floors of the interor... Apparently it advertises the best tea in shen jiao, and some of the most hospitable accommodations.

You are greeted by a confused looking girl upon arriving. She asks your business here, and you respond by telling her you come from the dojo of centered flame, and were directed to find accomodations here by Master Ren Zhao, her jaw drops and she flutters off in an absolute panic to find the proprietor of the inn.

The Proprietor it seems was sent a message by Ren Zhao by firehawk that you were to be accomodated here... and that there was to be a tea ceremony performed for you.

You are hurried into one of the deepest rooms, in the whole (unbelievably large) complex. The proprietor tells you that your staying here is to be an absolute secret, while you search for your sister.

Before long you are guided into a room where a meek girl kneels in front of a teapot, head bowed almost to the floor. As you sit, she introduces herself as Fire-Lily, the properties best tea girl.

Fire-Lily nods slightly "I think she may be called that now, I'm not too sure, it's been a very long time - some of the newer girls might know better, but this is really a terrible choice of conversation for tea".

You sip the tea Fire-Lily has prepared... and it is wonderful, you make some small chat about the leaves used and she remarks that the leaves came from Jin, but they're rare and hard to get.

You bring out the package of Jin leaves that your master gave to you and her nose scrunches up on her face - and when she sees the first few leaves she claps excitedly and jumps up and down.

"How did you get so many of them!" she absolutely bubbles
"You must keep it a secret - but I come from jin, you may have a quarter of what I have here"
Her jaw drops.
"... Do you want to see me sing or dance now? I'm not as good as the other girls..."
"No thank you, do you play pai sho?"
"oh!!! pai sho! that's something I'm really good at!"

You spend most of the afternoon playing pai sho with Fire-Lily, talking about her life at the house of white tiles, and you begin to build a clear mental picture that the house proprietor is clearly corrupt and in league with lady lao... but upon one comment you freeze, fire-lily mentions that the newest girl sold to the house by 'lady lao' has complained about her separation from her friend 'Pan' "who is from jin too!"

End of firebender quest, episode 2.

What is the functional justification for wearing a cape / cloak?
>>
>>24915415
Being frustrated at a few people being dinks is normal, I'll get over it. Deliberately trying to interrupt the story to grate and angst over something you seemingly don't like is being a dick.

If you don't like it leave, I'm not writing for you. I'm writing for the people who do like it. I apologized once and catered to people who thought I was being too gritty before, and I won't do it again - because I know it's impossible to satisfy everyone.

>How much work would it be to channel lightning through our staff, have the lightning arc from one target to another or split?
Honestly, channeling lightning through the staff won't be easy, but putting the staff in the off hand and blasting with your fingers is easy enough. As for arcing, It depends on how much you practice, remember that this is new even to maro.
