Sorry about the lateness, but it's not like you've got anything better to do on a Saturday night, right? Let get some VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Hey look! It's VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/PbjQS0aN

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You've arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, which you repaired and rechristened the Vergeltung.

After rooting out several Imp spy rings and fighting off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher, you've decided that it's now time to move on to greener (or at least more profitable) pastures. You and the Demons are already packed and prepared to leave Albion for the besieged nation of Ustio, with new gear and squad members in tow.

However, before that, we need to divy up the experience you gained!

>>

What class are Benjamin and Isolde?

Jager, Samantha, Heloise and Aleksander for leveling.

Look up the pastebin.

Anyway, wasn't Alek and Sam the consensus last time?
>>
>>24912729
Jagar (10), Sam (10), Alek (10), and Heloise (10).

Mm... sure why not.

Hey, Merc Command. Guy who came up with Ymir here. A bit disapointed he lost out to Isolde, but there's always next time, right?

Anyway, I defaulted him to Lancer, but after thinking about it, Fencer would have suited him better.

I figured this be as good a time as any to ask, is the Fencer class available in this quest?
>>
Darcsens did this!
>>
>>24913176
We should get Toughness for alek, he's kind of squishy as is.

Strength for Jager, potential for Heloise, potential for Aleksandr, toughness for Sam, and accuracy for Brilliant.

Soo, it seems that this is going to be the consensus. Let me just update the stats.

>>
>>24913374

>>
>>24913374
Fencers only make sense when you consider that artillery/indirect fire is vanishingly rare in the VC universe.

I personally believe Fencers/Maulers are a relic of the rampant trench warfare during EW1 and the only reason they're still around is that trench warfare is still very much a thing as of 1938 Europa. They've been retained because of how useful they are in urban assaults I suppose. Although Maulers are a little harder to explain than Fencers--the only way I could make them make sense is to make the Maul out to be a giant shaped charge on the end of a long metal pole. You'd have to be suicidal to want to charge a tank with nothing more than a ballistic shield and several kilos of highly energetic Ragnite Explosive Composition B.

Alek gets...

Survival Instinct: +5 to hit and increased damage when near death.

Anyways, time to continue on with the story!

With everything loaded and ready, you have the Demons leave for the docks to board the Vergeltung as you leave Albion for what is every likely the very last time.

In order to avoid any sort of fuss or attention from the public, you've scheduled the convoy to leave very early in the morning, much to the annoyance of your squad. However, the Demons weren't exactly a democracy, so they couldn't really complain much. However, they take advantage of the trip to catch some extra sleep.

However, Sam is still awake and just as alert as ever. You see she's reading the paper, and appears very engrossed in it.

"So Sam." You say, trying to get her attention.

"Huh?" She lowers the newspaper enough to make eye contact with you. "What's up, Cap?"

"I heard you recruited two new squad members." You say.

"Oh yeah, that. I'm sure you're gonna like em!" Sam says cheerily. "Got a new tanker for that tank destroyer Qyburn donated to us. His name's Benjamin Pinkley, though he wrote down 'Headcase' in the application. His file says he's a bit quirky, but insanely talented with a penchant for adding various (unauthorized) mods to his vehicles."

"Sounds like our kind of guy." You nod. "And the other?"

"Another lancer! FINALLY." Sam smiles. "Her name's Isolde Reinhardt. Besides the accusation of treason, she's got a flawless battle record. And... uh... please don't kill me for this, but she's a Belkan Knight, or more accurately, an ex-Belkan Knight."

At the mention of the words "Belkan Knight" you are almost ready to explode in a cloud of rage and panic and screaming. However, you then remember that Sam doesn't know about Karla, and as far as she knows, she's just recruiting an ex-Imp into the party. She just didn't realize the gravity of what she was doing, which is partly your own fault.

So, you keep up a straight face as best you can.

"Sam..." You say as calmly as you can without exploding into an enraged fit. "...explain to me why you thought recruiting an Imperial was a good idea."

"W-well...." Sam cringes and raises the newspaper as an impromptu shield against your gaze. "She's got every reason to hate the Empire that we do! Maybe even more! Besides..."

"What?"

"I really REALLY wanted to have another lancer to talk to." She squeaks.

You continue to glare at her for what seems like an eternity before reaching over the protective newspaper and ruffling her hair.

"Awwww shit, I can't stay mad at you when you're like that." You manage to smile. "Look, Sam. I'm about to tell you something very personal. We've known each other long enough, I really should have told you by now. And I'm sorry that I didn't. It's just not something I like spreading around. So before I start, I want your word that you won't tell anyone. Deal?"

"Deal." She says, with a mixture of concern and curiosity.

"Before the war, my fiance was a Belkan Knight. Well, actually the Belkan Princess."

"Wait, you were sleeping with Karla Hohenzollern?!?" Sam's eyes widen in amazement. "I mean, I heard she was looking for a husband in Gallia, but this..."

"Whoa, hold on there, you KNOW her?"

"I know OF her." Sam squirms nervously and flushes red. "What girl didn't want to be a princess? Much less one as badass as Karla Hohenzollern...?"

You honestly don't have words at this point, since you had expected this entire conversation to go differently. The only response you can conjure up is to silently take Sam's newspaper, roll it up into a tube, and smack her lightly on the head with it.

"Ow! What was that for?"

"Punishment." You say simply. "From now on you pass all recruitment decisions through me first, or you get the newspaper again."

"Okay okay!"

"So where were we..."

"I think I kinda get the gist of it Cap. The invasion happened and she totally backstabbed you but you still have conflicted feelings about the whole thing."

"Wow, you're pretty good."

"I can put two and two together, Cap. Don't have to be a superspy like Elizabeth to do that." She then smiles. "But thanks for telling me, Cap. I won't make the same mistake again."

"Good."

"But we can keep Isolde, right?"

"You said she had 'every reason to hate the Empire that we do, maybe even more'? I'm gonna need details on that one, Sam." You say.

"Oh yeah, that. Remember that part about accusation of treason? Apparently she pissed off the wrong people by accidentally killing the son of a high ranking Imperial official in a dispute over prisoner treatment. I already had Elizabeth give her account a once-over and she confirmed it. Apparently AIS tried to convince her to defect to them but she politely refused."

"Somehow I'm not surprised." You shake your head. Looks like her reasons sounded noble enough. However, you're not sure how a Belkan Knight would death with getting kicked out of Belka and cut off from their order. You guess this would be a good opportunity to find out.

"So Sam." You open the newspaper and skim the front page. "Anything interesting world events I ought to know about?"

"Well..." Sam frowns. "Bad news from home. Apparently some kind of civil war started shortly after we left for Albion. A bunch of nobles who aren't happy about Archduchess Cordelia outing herself as a Darcsen are raising all sorts of hell. Raiding towns, purging Darcsens, it's like the goddamn invasion all over again."

"Eh, they'll probably be cleaned up in a couple months." You shrug.

"I'm not so sure, Cap. I've read Gallia's laws on dealing with internal conflict, and they're pretty wonky, to say the least."

"Well, I'm sure if things get dicey Cordelia can just ask us to come fight for her."

"I dunno. It would look really bad for Cordelia to hire foreign mercenaries to shoot Gallians, and at this stage, she needs all the PR she can get. But..." Sam hands you a letter. "It seems the Gallian Resistance Army doesn't have the same qualms Cordelia does. They want to hire us."

We don't really count all that much considering our house was set on fire, our lands taken, and probably a lot of our family killed.
>>
>>24915375

We still have our lands actually.

It's just that there isn't much on them.
>>
>>24915375
it will mean a hell of a lot more when we say the sturmfuhrers support cordelia after we have taken over the empire and rule alongside queen Karla
>>
>>24915375
Jager just defended albion against an entire imperial invasion and word of this deed has spread far and wide. His support counts for a hell of a lot, maybe not in terms of men, land or coin, but certainly in reputation.
>>
>>24915238
>Tell them to go fuck themselves.
>>24915375
It won't mean much in a physical sense, but it WILL be a show of support. The Sturmfuhrers haven't been dead so long that they don't still have friends amongst the nobility. Our father's closer allies may be swayed by it.

Here changing to this >>24915361
I can already feel the gallian butthurt flowing through me.
>>
>>24915361
Fuck, I forgot about that.

Declare in favour of Cordelia, crush the enemies of Ustio, and then sweep into Gallia, cutting down the rebel dogs like a scythe through a wheatfield.

Can't let the rebels gain too much momentum, but we still need to honour our contract.
>>
>>24915238
>>Tell them we're already engaged.

Let's try to be at least professional about this people.
>>
>>24915238
"Well... my first instinct is to tell them to go fuck themselves, but we got to at least APPEAR professional, so just apologize and tell them we're already engaged on the Ustian front... then tell them to go fuck themselves." Frankly, you didn't spend a year kicking Imperials out of Gallia to end up working for a bunch of stuck up nobles who were no better than they were. Plus you never liked those damn southern families, always so stuck up over tradition and racial purity. Made you glad you were born in the north.

"Roger that, Cap." Sam grins, obviously eager to write that letter.

By this point, the convoy has reached the docks. However, the sun had already risen and people were starting to catch on to what was happening. Already, you could see a crowd forming at the gates to the dock, with the Home Guard sentries trying to set up a blockade to keep them from getting in.

As the trucks pull up alongside the Vergeltung, you can see two figures standing by the gangplank. One looks like a thin, lanky, bearded man you assume is Benjamin, while the other is a prim and proper looking woman with strawberry blonde hair and a posture straight as a rail. You knew Belkan Knight when you saw one, so that had to be Isolde.

The only reason I'm not advocating just driving there and killing them without even asking for pay is due to the fact that the Queen doesn't want that.

As soon as you're confident you won't blow yourself up with it.

>>24915448
You decide to greet Benjamin first. You're still not quite comfortable confronting Isolde just yet. You're sure she's a perfectly fine, well adjusted woman, but that whole Belkan Knight thing still eats away at your gut.

"Benjamin Pinkley?" You ask, approaching the lanky tanker.

"You can just call me Headcase, sir. Less syllables to keep track of, you see." Headcase says in the smoothest, most laid back tone you have ever heard. It's like he's not even aware he's headed for a warzone.

"You sound a bit tired, Headcase. You sure you got enough rest?" You ask worriedly.

"Oh, it's nothing, man. It's just this ocean air messing with my waves. Get me in a tank and you will see me soooooaaaaaaarrr."

"Okay..." You consider asking him something else, but you're rather short on time right now since the Vergeltung is scheduled to launch within the hour.

>Anything else you want to ask him?

"Okay then Headcase. Just so long as you can do your job. If you have any problems you either come to me or Sam, got it?"

Then talk to Isolde.

"So I've heard you've done some modification to the tanks in your previous employment. Mine if ask what kind?"

You're short on time, so you decide to move on to Isolde. However, you two just end up staring at each other rather awkwardly.

"Isolde Reinhardt?" You ask, trying to keep your voice straight.

"Sir Isolde Reinhardt at your service!" Isolde salutes sharply, in total contrast to Headcase's laid back attitude.

>What do you want to say to her?
>>
>>24915899
Well I got nothin
>>
"Remember Sam, she's your responsibility now. You got make sure has plenty of food and water also ammo. Right. Later."

Okay, it's joke post.
>>
>>24915899
Given a choice would you return to the Imperials?
>>
>>24915899
Return her salute, don't leave the lady hanging.

We will be fighting Imperials, Isolde. Can I trust that I have your loyalty, above and beyond any previous allegiances?
>>
>>24915899
"at ease, we are a fair bit less formal than you're used to, also, if given the chance to return to the knighthood, honour restored, would you?"

if she says yes, we could let her in on our master plan and ensure her loyalty
>>
>>24915899

"I have to admit, I was...surprised, that a Belkan Knight would stoop to our level. I won't question your resolve, seeing as you're with us here right now, but I have to know... will we be able to count on you when the time comes? Or will we have a sword of damocles dangling over our heads?"

>>24915899
Start chuckling a bit and return the salute, knights are so funny sometimes.

"So I gathered. Jager Sturmfuhrer, lovely to meet you. At ease. You can relax a bit, we're all friendly here. Though I have to admit I didn't expect a Belkan Knight.

Welcome to the Demons of Randgriz, the rootinest tootinest band of mercs to ever metaphorically shove their foots so far up Imperial ass that they tasted boot polish.

I got two big questions for you, first, why'd you join up with us? Second, if you were offered your knighthood back what would you do? Would you stick with us or would you change sides?"
>>
>>24916022

"You have been given the blessings of a new family. You are now a Demon of Randgriz, not a Knight of Belka. Each and every one of us here would gladly give our lives for any of us, our family. Our Blood Brothers and Sisters. We are only what we stand as, and we Demons stand as one united family. Race and Creed matter not to us.

I will say this now and give you one chance. If you have any reason to not become part of our family, if you have any reason to hurt my family... leave now. If you wish to tell me anything, my office is always open if you wish to speak in private. Welcome to the Demons, Sir Isolde Reinhardt.

Oh, and by the way, my Lieutenant, Sam, is probably going to hug the shit out of you. She hasn't had a lancer alongside her since I can't remember. Oh, and don't piss of Tarin."
>>

>>
>>24916127
Because purple is best colour.
>>
>>24916145

>>
>>24915899
You manage to return the salute, though you have to fight to get the next words out of your mouth.

"I'm sure you already know this when you decided to join us, Isolde, but I must remind you that we will be fighting Imperials. Can I trust that I have your loyalty, above and beyond any previous allegiances?"

You can see Isolde's eye twitch at your last two words. Obviously this subject was a very sore spot for her.

"Despite what others may call me, I still consider myself a Belkan Knight, and a Belkan Knight always upholds their oaths. I have sworn my allegiance to the Demons of Randgriz and I will obey every order you give me."

"Alright, then can I ask you why you're joining us? There must be hundreds of other mercenary bands out there like us that would gladly take you."

"I know of you, Captain Sturmfuhrer. I served under Princess Hohenzollern and was one of her confidants." She says, keeping her voice low so nobody else can hear. "That means one way or another, you will be facing Belka in your travels. If am to be judged a traitor, it will be done in a trial by combat against a fellow knight, not at the whim of a spoiled noble."

Goddamn knights, you think.

"A noble thought. But the question is, what happens if you win? Will you rejoin Belka?"

Isolde shakes her head. "According to Belkan law, a knight who is stripped of her title may never be reinstated. Even if I absolve myself in the eyes of my peers, I will have nowhere to return to. This is entirely for my personal honor."

>Anything else to add?

Knighthood is a really big fucking deal to Belkans.

>>24916250
"If I have my way, then after all is said and done, you will have somewhere to return to." You say somewhat reassuringly. "If not in Belka, then with us, the Demons."

Isolde seems to be taken aback by the offer, but nods with the slightest grin on her face.

"I will keep that in mind, sir."

"Okay, time's up. We've got to go." You wave to the rest of your squad to begin boarding the Vergeltung. Meanwhile, a crane lowers Fenrir into its docking port, while the Gallian Tank Destroyer is loaded into one of its reconverted cargo holds. Say what you will about the Gallian Light Tank design, but it was amazingly light and compact.

"Are we ready, Captain?" Captain Davos asks.

"Send her out, Captain." You respond. "Ustio, here we come."

>And that's it for tonight! Come back Sunday night 6-7pm PST where we finally get to see why Ustio is all the rage these days!

Damn missed it. Anyway, two things I thought I should mention. First, the imperial tank destroyer supposedly has a gun based off an antiaircraft design, despite the near total absence of aircraft in the setting. Second, whatever happened to the pair of blades we dueled Karla with?

>>24919057
>whatever happened to the pair of blades we dueled Karla with?
they are locked away in a special chest marked "Use in case of climactic sword fight on top of speeding train"

Nah, we'll hand off Karla's blade to the next knight with instructions to "Deliver it to Karla, she'll know what its for"
>>
>>24919057
>a gun based off an antiaircraft design
I forgot that the 88 was originally a flak cannon. Maybe they just developed it for tanks in this setting.

>whatever happened to the pair of blades we dueled Karla with?
We're saving them for the rematch.
>>
>>24919114
Nah, it actually says in the VC 1 glossary that the Imperial Tank Destroyer's gun was based of an AA design.
>>
>>24919155
Is it ever explained in the games WHY they don't have aircraft?
>>
>>24919213
Probably because the game engine does not support it at all. Also, because this way tanks are much more important.
