You leave the orbital station for the surface and touch down. You should prepare to leave for your mission in a few days.

Sharp Strike bids you farewell, and leaves for the training grounds to get some last-moment practice in before the mission.

You glance at your ship, and its empty missile racks. You should fill them up at some point.

You check your wrist-computer for messages. You see one from your mother, asking you to see her before leaving for the mission.

You also realize you should probably visit the training ground and practice boarding tactics.

Do you:

A. Visit the ship-master to requisition some missiles.
B. Visit your mother and see what she wants.
C. Visit the training ground to refresh your knowledge on boarding tactics.
>>
>>24912872
A, the missiles may take some time to get loaded.
Welcome back.
>>
>>24912872
A
>>
A and then quickly onto B.

Also, have we done -any- stealth practice with our mentor like he asked us to do? Because I think we kinda failed on that one.
>>
>>24912872
>A. Visit the ship-master to requisition some missiles.
>>
>>24912872
I vote A as well.
>>
>>24912929
He gave us an in-depth lesson on infiltrating xenos hives I believe.
>>
>>24912955
Didn't he say he was gonna give us more lessons? I could sworn.

Oh well
>>
A
>>
>>24912933
>>24912908

You make way for the clan shipyard and greet the ship-master. You tell her you're looking to requisition munitions for your ship. She puts a list of available munitions up on the holo screen.

"Take a look. Let me know what you need."

You take some time to study the manifest.

Your internal munitions bay can hold 12 missiles.

The list of possible choices are:

A. Fission torpedo - high yield unguided atomic warheads rated at 2.5 megatons. (Takes up 2 missile slots each)
B. Disruptor Torpedo - Releases a concentrated E/M pulse which overloads electronics and control systems, temporarily disabling them.
C. Seeker Missile - Highly agile missiles with excellent turn rate designed to chase down and destroy small craft.
D. Sentry Mine - Small, stealthed, mines for use in space.
E, Rocket Pod - Fires multi-purpose, unguided rockets which excel in penetrating armor.

What would you like to requisition?

(Say broadly what you'd like, I'll compile suggestions and improvise.)
>>
>>24913139
Vote for some Disruptors, Sharp suggested disabling the ship to get on board.
>>
>>24913139
We want a decent number of disruptor missiles to incapacitate the target, enough mines to cripple the frigates so we can finish them off with ease and a handful of anti-fighter missiles for if they dispatch reinforcements.
>>
>>24913139
We should take some of those missiles proposed by Sharpy
B
>>
>>24913175
>>24913177

So 4 Disruptor torpedoes.

8 slots left.
>>
>>24913139
B
>>
>>24913204
Will 2 mines be enough for each frigate? That would leave us enough missiles to take down 4 fighters.
>>
>>24913177
>>24913204
How about 4 mines, 2 seekers, 2 rocket pods?
>>
>>24913139
D
Since we are ambushing a patrol we will have time to set them up
>>
>>24913242
We don't need more unguided anti-capship weapons. We have a pair of fuckheug lasors for that.
>>
>>24913242

Sounds good. Anyone second?
>>
>>24913261
Sounds good to me.
>>
>>24913139
I'm gonna say a mix of B and D. We have our main guns for big stuff and BRRRRT and our little turrets for fighters.
>>
>>24913139
>C. Seeker Missile - Highly agile missiles with excellent turn rate designed to chase down and destroy small craft.
Can these go after engines effectively? But a collective of Cs and Bs, with one or two As encase we need to fuck something up.

Like, say the frigate actually being a giant queen.
>>
>>24913261
I second everything but the rocket-pods.
>>

Also, with all these weapons, we are absolute space-BRRRRRRRRT
>>

>>24913279

Okay, so sans rocket pots.

4 Disruptors
4 Mines
2 Seekers.

We have 2 slots left.
>>
>>24913321
The last time we met WY fighters they came in a squadron of 5. 4 seekers almost wipes the whole group out.
>>
>>24913321
Do we need to keep some space for boarding pods?
>>
>>24913321
Would like to drop 2 mines for 2 fission torpedo's filling up all our missile slots
>>
>>24913338
>>24913310

So the final loadout will be;

4 Disruptors
4 Mines
4 Seekers

Looks okay?
>>
>>24913321
Yeah, get two more seekers.

If we're feeling worried, one Nuke might be an idea.
>>
>>24913363
Nein,
4 disruptors, 2 mines, 2 seekers, and 2 fission.
>>
>>24913321
A fission torpedo.

Because you never know when you'll need a HOLY FUCK button.
>>
>>24913357
Oh, Oh, yeah, this.
>>
>>24913357
Boarding pods are a separate thing. We'll get to that.

>>

>>

4 Disruptors
4 Mines
2 Seekers
1 Fission

We good?
>>
>>24913450
Okay with me
>>
>>24913450
Sound alright, I'm pretty sure we can fuck up any figther that get close with our regular weapons anyway
>>
>>24913460
You fill out the requisition form and flip the holo-screen back to the ship-master.

4 Disruptor Torpedoes
4 Mines
2 Seeker Missiles.
1 Fission Torpedo.

She glances at it and submits it for processing.

She turns to you. "Anything else?"

Do you:

A. Ask for her recommendation on ship-to-ship boarding.
B. Ask her to look over your ship's current loadout and provide feedback.
C. Ask her for advice on the combat capabilities of human warships.
D. Leave
>>
>>24913565

>>A.

You decide to ask for her recommendation on ship-to-ship boarding.

She brings up the blueprint of your ship in front of you. She taps at your rear ramp. "Generally, there are two approaches. You can use the boarding pod, which holds 2 hunters. Your ship is too small to mount one internally, so if needed, we'll need to mount one externally below the rear ramp, with access to it available through a hatch in the storage bay."

"The second method," she tells you, "is the combat umbilical pod. It's far stronger and more durable than the standard umbilical. You fire it, it latches on to the enemy hull, and shaped plasma charges will drill straight through the enemy armour, allowing you to enter. This will also tether your ship to the enemy."

She glances at the blueprint once more.

"Both share the same mounting, unfortunately, so you'll only be able to fit one. Which will it be?"

You answer:

A. Combat umbilical
B. Boarding pod
>>
>>24913735
A?
>>
>>24913735
A
>>
>>24913735
The pod, we only carry 3 hunters and we need someone to stay with the ship. Even if we eliminate the frigates and disrupt the destroyer, reinforcements would spell doom for a stationary predator ship.
>>
>>24913735
Tough choice
though with an umbilical they can't really shoot us since we are on them
A
>>
>>24913735
A
pod would allow a hunterbro to stay on the ship and deal with possible problems though.
>>
>>24913802
>>24913781
So would an umbilical. We don't need to send over all three if we decide not to.
>>
>>24913735
I'm gonna go with A, since we'll have another ship there to cover us.
>>
>>24913815
True, we don't need to keep the thing attached the whole time.
>>
>>24913802
>>A. Combat umbilical

You ask to have the combat umbilical pod installed on your ship.

The ship-master confirms it, and quips, "Or, you can board the old fashioned way - blow a hole through the hull and fly in."

Next, do you;

A. Ask her to look over your ship's current loadout and provide feedback.
B. Ask her for advice on the combat capabilities of human warships.
C. Leave

>>A.

You ask her to look over your ship's current load-out and provide feedback. She brings up the records of your ship on her holo-screen. She examines it in detail.

"Looks fine," she tells you, "Well-armed," she comments. She looks at you. "Just needs a good pilot."

You ask her for comment on the combat capabilities of human warships.

"They've made quite a few advancements in the past few decades; I wouldn't underestimate them. Their missiles are formidable, and their slug weapons will chew away your ablative armor like nothing else. They're slow, though. Even our larger corvettes can out-fly their fastest interceptors. They compensate for it by sticking weapons on every facing, so watch your approaches. Take them out at long range would be my recommendation, but if you're looking to board, that may not be an option."

You thank her, and leave.

Where to next?

A. Visit your mother
B. Spend some time in the training ground.
>>
>>24914038
B, let's do some training to get ourselves ready.

She bids you to enter and greets you warmly.

As you sit, she brings up a large holo-screen and puts it in front of you. On it, you see a long and well organized dossier on the Night-Prowler Fleet-Master Night-Star.

"Take a look," she tells you. "A few days ago, your mentor, Jackal, spoke to me about this Fleet-Master he was working with. The name sounded vaguely familiar, so I decided to do a bit of digging."

>>B. Read through his service history (Critical success!)

You read through his career as the serving Fleet-Master of clan Night-Prowler. The official version is scant and contains little information, but your mother has linked a massive amount of personal research and references from unofficial sources.

As you read further, you discover more and more things seem to be out of place.

You read through the notes your mother put together for ships lost during his service.

"Mother," you tell her, "In 90 years, this guy has lost three corvettes to asteroid fields, one frigate to inter-clan sabotage. Six smaller vessels to hunting accidents. One destroyer to uncontrolled infestation... How is he not executed for incompetence?"

Your mother taps her desk. "Yes. I can't decide if he's grossly incompetent or malicious."

You read further, and suddenly, an insight hits you. You run your fingers over the holo-screen and quickly seek out references to the lost ships. "Mother..." you tell her, "... none of these destroyed or damaged ships were ever recovered. They were either... " you pause to flip through each report, "... reported as lost in deep space or vaporized. I think he's putting together a private fleet!"

Your mother suddenly sits up. "You're right! How could I have missed that?" She flips through her records. "None of these ships were recovered... but it might be too early to jump to conclusions. Could just be incompetence."

Do you:

A. Agree that it's probably unwarranted paranoia.

C. Continue reading his background (Pass: vs. DC 12)

You flip the holo-screen to the beginning of the dossier and begin to read his background. You carefully examine his history to becoming the fleet-master.

You notice several oddities, and voice them to your mother. "... he went from a blooded hunter to having his own command in 2 years. That's too short."

Your mother taps the holo-screen. "Read his hunting records."

You navigate to his hunting records, and see a long and illustrious list of trophies bought back from various hunts. You see a variety of impressive trophies including large beasts and ferocious strains of hard-meat from all corners of the galaxy. Your mother, however, annotated each instance with additional references to hunting expeditions from other prominent hunters of Clan Night-Prowler from the same timeframe. You notice similarities.

"Elite hunter Lightning-Sheath clears out an infestation and two days later our fleet-master gets his hands on a praetorian trophy. Elite hunter Worthy-Sword visits a jungle world and three days later our fleet-master shows a large reptilian trophy. He's taking others' trophies!"

Your mother clicks thoughtfully. "Yes. Blackmail? Close relations? Bribes? I'm not certain. But still, no direct evidence."

You finish reading the dossier, somewhat disturbed.

Your mother looks at you expectantly.

Do you say:

A. "He's preparing for a coup."
B. "He's starting his own private army."
C. "He got to where he was by corruption, and he's grossly incompetent because of it."
D. "Interesting, but it's Night-Prowler business. Nothing to do with us. Let them sort it out."
E. "I think we're both too paranoid, mother. Let's drop this."
G. Say nothing.

>>24914763
G. Say nothing.

Lets hear what mother has to say, first. I'm thinking A or B.

>>24914804

>>
>>24914804
Nigga what, he takes the first 3 rolls

>>
>>24914804
Currently, I wait a bit of time for all rolls to come in, then take the highest of the first 3 rolls. Crit success/failures in the first 3 rolls automatically result in choosing that option.
>>
>>24914763
it sounds mainly like B, theres not enough politicking in his records to suggest A

but hes a faggot nonetheless so
A&B&C

we might want to inform the matriarch privately of our findings, so someone with the power to use them may when the time is right
>>
Actually, this talk of rolls bring up an idle question I had: can we maybe start getting skills so we stop being less random when it comes to our elite skills?

Or, PQ, are you doing that to difficulty for us?
>>
Tie between A&B, B&C and G
>>
>>24914763
B and C
>>
>>24914826
Why not the average of the first 3 rolls or the median roll, with crits taking priority?
>>
>>24914763
B seems obvious, but I feel the Matriarch should know about this.
Why would he need a private army unless he plans a coup?
Is it even possible for the Night-Prowlers to NOT know about this?
If they DO know about this, then the entire clan is involved (save for a few), and means to build a secret fleet.
Now, what would a clan want with a secret fleet, hidden from all the other clans, and the Empire in general?

>H. The Matriarch needs to know about this
>>
>>24914865
I'm building difficulty checks against our equipment, loadout, choices, etc.

I'm not really sure how useful a fleshed out skill system is, but let me work on it and we can try it out for our first mission.
>>
>>24914763
Definitely B, for reasons unknown; possibly A, probably not C (just a different kind of "competent"). We should take it to our own matriarch first, though, and see how she wants to play the politics.
>>
>>24914873
Because thats kinda dumb. best-of-first-3 is a tried and true method, and we've been using it for a while. Don't fix what isn't broken.
>>
>>24914763
"Whatever his plans, he is ill-suited to be involved in a hunt of this magnitude. The question is can he be removed."
>>
>>24914901
I think we're already doing best-of-3 against hidden-but-hinted-at DCs determined by PQ behind the screen. I feel certain that PQ is taking skills and background into account.
>>
>>24914915
Seems easy enough, with the matriarch's cooperation. We could always arrange a ritual challenge, and when we win, we put Jackal in charge instead.
>>
>>24914937
Or for that matter, perhaps a less corrupt Night-Prowler chosen by their leadership. This is exactly why we need to get the matriarch involved.
>>
Yeah, either say nothing or bring this tot he Matriarch.
>>
>>24914901

I've been meaning to bring this up actually. With three rolls, we have a 27% chance of getting a critical success or fail. It leads to a pretty swingy system, and while crits are fun, they should be a rarer occurrence (by definition) than multiple times a thread.
>>
>>24914868
B seems to have the highest frequency.

You slowly consider what you've just read. "I think he's creating his own private army, off the official clan records and away from public eye."

"Yes," she responds, "I agree. But I wonder, is the entire clan involved in this conspiracy?" She thinks about it for a moment. "No. Can't be. Too many points of failure. Too many people. Night-Prowler is not a small clan. There must be some involvement from the higher clan leaders at some point, however, for him to have hidden it for so long."

Do you:

A. Suggest the findings be presented to your matriarch right away
B. Suggest she leave the findings with you for the moment.
>>
>>24914984
A, the Matriarch would know what to do best.
>>
>>24914984
A.

the matriarch needs to know ASAP, she might not need to ACT but she needs to know
>>
>>24914984

A. Her call. If we want to keep this under our masks rather than confronting the Fleet-Master, we can, but I don't think we should keep it from the matriarch regardless.

And reading. And dicking.
>>
>>24915009

If she does know about it, she would likely bring us in (or kill us once we get out into the void). If she doesn't, that means this mission could very likely lead to the death of several of our companions.

To clarify, I'm not talking about the ships (which are presumably going into the private fleet), but the trophies which he seems unable to gather. If we go off the assumption this conspiracy is stealing trophies, why would they raise this specific unremarkable member of the clan? It's weird.

>> A. Suggest the findings be presented to your matriarch right away

"The matriarch needs to hear about this," you tell her. Your mother clicks in approval. She taps her wrist computer and summons her aide. "Get my shuttle ready. I'll meet you at the shuttle pad."

The aide obeys, and quickly exits.

She takes the data and heads for the door. She gestures you to follow.

Your shuttle touches down at the palace grounds. Your mother exits hurriedly and approaches the guards. "We're here to see the matriarch."

The guards hesitate for a moment.

"It's urgent!" She barks.

The guards bow hurriedly. "Of course, executrix," and let you through.

You make way to the Matriarch's office, and find her in conversation with an envoy from clan Forge-Fire.

"We should wait," your mother tells you.

Our Matriarch has little to gain to side with a Night-Prowler rogue. You only do this if you want to make a move against another clan, or clans. In doing that you are making a move against the empire as a whole.
Hell, even simply doing this just to fuck with the Night-Prowlers would ostracize us to the rest of the clans, and the empire. To suggest that our Matriarch is with this Night-Prowler rogue is to accuse our Matriarch of treason against the empire.

You wait outside patiently as your matriarch proceeds with the talks.

About an hour later, the discussions conclude and your matriarch escorts the envoy out. She greets your mother formally and invites you both in.

You side down, and your mother presents the data and your conclusions to the matriarch.

She reads through it, occasionally stopping to ask explanations.

She turns the holo-screen off, clicks with exasperation, and looks at you. "And here I thought I was clever for binding the Night-Prowlers in pledging their fleet," she mutters.

She looks at you.

"He does not place honor in high regard," you tell her. You recall his suggestion on ambushing the civilian convoy and refusal to recover a stranded hunter.

Your mother chimes in. "What about their matriarch? Surely she must be aware of this."

Your Matriarch clicks irritably. She looks at your mother. "I've dealt with the Night-Prowler matriarch for a long time now; she's an awful leader, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone managed to pull a veil over her eyes, but her intentions are good - she's looking out for what's best of her clan and empire."

She taps the desk with irritation.

She turns to you. "Let me make this clear. The operation against Weyland is still Cloud-Viper's top priority. I won't commit us to sort out another clan's politics."

"Whatever his intentions are, one thing is clear; he's dangerous, either out of malice or out of incompetence. But if we post-pone the mission, it will delay our entire operation."

You say:

You tell her, "No, let the mission proceed. We'll deal with any issues which come up."

She is silent for a moment, lost in thought. She quickly reaches out and taps a rapidly on her wrist-computer. A holo-screen pops up and your mentor's face appears.

"Jackal," your matriarch barks, "where are you?"

"On the station. About to leave with the Night-Prowlers to rendezvous with their fleet."

"Is this is secure line?"

Your mentor hesitates a moment, glances behind him, and responds, "Yes."

"Good. You need to keep an eye on Night-Star, their fleet-master. He is a liability. I will send you some data shortly. It's encrypted. Make sure you read them in private."

Your mentor clicks thoughtfully. "Understood. I'll keep an eye on him."

"Good."

The matriarch disconnects the comms.

She bids you to leave her to her thoughts.

You and your mother stand up and head back to her shuttle.

You make some small talk, and reassure your mother you're up to the task, dubious conspiracies or no.

The day grows late.

You see a message on your wrist computer left by Steel-Arrow, asking you to gather the team for a session of planning.

If he tries anything (we have Quick-Shadow, I bet he doesn't like the fact he's still alive) we'll be around to deal with it, and if we fail, key people will know what happened.

"I am leaving for a mission tomorrow. I was hoping to spend some time with you," you say.

She clicks amusingly. "Ah! Back for more? That's rare among males, isn't it? I need to sort out this data first. You can wait, or you can help me."

Do you:

A. Sit down and wait.

You offer your assistance in sorting the data. You sit down next to her and help her sift through the long list of data points.

"There's something about a male sorting through lots of numerical data which excites me," she admits.

The two of you at last finishes the sorting, and compile the data into a neat report.

The archivist grab your wrist, causing a sharp pain to shoot up your arm.

She proceeds to drag you up the stairs.

Do you:

A. Attempt to resist, and tell her it's getting rather late.

>>B. Follow her up the stairs. (Pass vs. DC 12)

You quickly scramble up the stairs to avoid getting dragged. She shoves you into her room and slams you against the wall. You're not really sure what's happening in the ensuing struggle, but she seems to be enjoying it immensely. Once again, you find yourself being thrown around the room, through you are mentally prepared for it.

At last, she howls in a twitching fit and throws you hard at the door. The automated door hisses open and you find yourself tumbling head over heels down the stairs.

You slowly rise to your feet. You think one of your eyes is swollen.

The Archivist's blurred form appears before you. "That was fun!" you hear her say. "Was it fun for you?"

Do you mutter:

A. Yes.
B. No.

>>
>>24916360
Suggestion, as one of the people voting B: it's pretty clear that just saying "no" bluntly will cause serious trouble, and I agree with that. Doesn't mean we should just say "yes", either, though, and keep inviting more punishment. Let's be more nuanced and less binary.

>>24916312

>>
>>24916380
I think A is ahead.

"Yes, " you mutter.

The Archivist clicks rapidly in amusement. "Good! Best of luck on your mission. Find me when you get back."

You pull yourself up, bid her farewell, and stumble back.

You make your way home and lie down on your bed.

You drift off to sleep, but is suddenly awakened by your wrist computer.

A holo-screen projects forward and the face of your mentor appears.

"Three-Claw. I need to speak to..."What the hell happened to your face?"

You answer:

A. "Nothing. Training accident."
B. "Mating accident."
C. "Slipped and fell down the stairs."

"Mating accident," you answer.

Your mentor squints his eyes. "Well, I suppose you were bound to find out the hard way at some point. Ah..."

He then gives you a few tips. "The key," he tells you, "is holding on. Just hold yourself close and don't let go, for anything. Because the second you do - " he waves his hand, "- you go flying. Anyway, I need to talk to you about Night-Star."

He pauses. "I read the dossier you and the Executrix put together. He's hiding something. I'm certain of it. Have you told your team?"
