Predator Quest: Episode 18

You are Three-Claw, a Yautja hunter of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been tasked by your clan Matriarch to investigate breaches of forbidden knowledge by clan Weyland on the planet Fey'lenn, or Pandora, as it is known in the human tongue.

______________________________________

You wake, still bruised and sore from the night before. You pull yourself up with some excitement, and take some time to don your wargear. You look over everything one last time, and make for the space port.

You find Steel-Arrow and his team already geared up and ready to go. You head to your own hangar and find Burning-Scythe and Sharp-Strike waiting for you. Together, you perform a final check of your ship, and enter.

You take your seat snugly in the pilot's seat, and glance over at the co-pilot's seat.

Who do you want in the co-pilot's seat, to handle gunnery and sensor controls?

A. Sharp-Strike
B. Burning-Scythe.
C. Leave it empty and handle everything yourself.
>>
>>24949040
I'm going to say B. Sharp-Strike needs more time to get the hang of things before we give him a really important job, since this is his first hunt and all.

B
You peer behind the seat and ask Burning-Scythe to take the co-pilot's seat. You activate his seat's holo-visor and link it to the sensors and gunnery controls. He quickly runs his fingers over the controls in an experienced fashion.

You give the spaceport controller your clearance signal, and slowly raise the throttle and give the engines a slow burn. The Phantom Hammer hums to life, rise into the atmosphere.

You meet up with Steel-Arrow's ship, the "Void Light", in high orbit. You synchronize your foldspace engines and punch in the coordinates for the Night-Prowler rendezvous point. You engage the foldspace engines, and lean back as space warps around you.

It will take 5 days to reach your destination.

You must now decide how to spend it.

Do you:

A. Run Sharp-Strike through some training drills
B. Call Steel-Arrow's team and inform him about a possible Night-Prowler conspiracy
C. Take some time to plan your boarding action

You bid your two teammates to take a seat in the comm room and establish a link with Steel-Arrow.

He leans back in his seat and greets you. You give him the unpleasant news, and pass to him the dossier you and your mother compiled.

He clicks thoughtfully. "I'm not sure what to make of this. Have you spoken with anyone else about it? Or are we the only ones to know?"

Do you answer:

You answer:

A. "Jackal can take care of himself, don't worry. He knows what he's doing."

"Jackal can take care of himself, don't worry. He knows what he's doing, you tell him." From the other ship, you hear Seeking-Eye speak.

"Well, we've got a Night-Prowler over here, sitting next to me. What's your take on this, Quick-Shadow? You're not going to shoot us in the back, are you?"

The Night-Prowler clicks in irritation. He flicks his fingers over the holo-screen and brings up a section of the dossier for everyone to see.

"Pale-Beast, hunter, my friend. Says here he lost his life and his ship to a solar storm. I've known Pale-Beast since we were younglings. He's the best pilot I know. He can thread a frigate through a star corona. This is a blatant lie."

Seeking-Eye presses the issue. "He's high up in your clan. Nobody gets that high without a lot of friends. You'll need to take a side, Quick-Shadow. I need to know where your loyalties lie."

Quick-Shadow is silent.

"Calm, friend," you tell Seeking-Eye, "we're all in this together."

Quick-Shadow is silent for a moment. After a long time, he speaks up. "I don't know whose side I'm on, but I'm not on his."

Quick-Shadow turns to each of you in turn. "He left me for dead. He took my ship. He may have killed my friend. But this isn't about vengeance. I will deal with it, on my terms. Now, we finish the mission. If he gets in the way, we'll deal with it."

Quick Shadow clicks thoughtfully. "I need to inform my Matriarch. She needs to know about this. Night-Star is a danger to the clan."

You ask him to reconsider. "We don't know how high his rapport within the clan goes, Quick-Shadow. Let's keep this within the team for now."

He thinks abou this for a moment, and reluctantly agrees.

"I trust my Matriarch," he tells you. "But given the mission, it's not likely she can give us any help. Very well; we'll keep this among ourselves for now."

The team is silent for a while, but Burning-Scythe breaks the ice with some small talk.

You spend some time discussing the mission. Afterwards, you break for some rest.

How do you wish to spend the rest of the time:

C. Take some time to teach Sharp-Strike in combat techniques.

You take some time to give a few flying and gunnery lessons to Sharp-Strike. He tackles the lessons with enthusiasm. You show him the gunnery and sensor controls and give him quite a few lessons how to properly handle a ship.

Through it all, Burning-Scythe in chimes with a few techniques of his own. Through this, you inadvertantly find Burning-Scythe to be a very experienced pilot.

Time passes quickly, and soon, you are half way there. You are 3 days away from the rendezvou point. Sharp-Strike seems to have grasped the basic controls of the ship.

Do you:

A. Spend some time teaching Sharp-Strike close-combat tactics
B. Spend some time tutoring him in ranged tactics

You share with him the compiled list of data you've gathered against humans and synthetics. Together, along with Burning-Scythe, you discuss with him your experiences when fighting against these opponents.

You walk him through a few techniques and take some time to spar with him.

After a few long and grueling sessions, you feel confident Sharp-Strike has become more familiar with human opponents.

Time passes, and at last, you arrive at the rendezvou point.

You bring your ship to the exit point and synchronize the drop with Steel-Arrow. Together, you collapse the fieldspace and exit FTL.

You find the Night-Prowler fleet waiting for you. At their head is the Shadow-Beast, the 2 kilometer plus flashship of the Night-Rrowler fleet. She is accompanied by two escort frigates.

The Shadow-Beast hails you, and Night-Star's cameo appears on your comm.

"Time is short. We have had a slight miscalculation. The human fleet will be here far sooner than expected. We have, perhaps, 2 hours. Go quickly and prepare."

Do you:

A. Ask for a meeting to discuss the plans before hand.
B. Ask to speak to your mentor.

>>C. Agree, and raise your mentor on a private set of comms.

You acknowledge, and inform the Night-Prowler you'll begin preparations immeidately. You close off the comms and raise your Mentor on the private line.

"There was no calculation to begin with," he tells you. "I was under the impression the Night-Prowlers already have presence here, but they don't. We jumped in, traced the incoming signal, and found it to be a hair breadth away."

He glances around him. "Also, the actual size of the inbound fleet is larger than what he told us at the initial meeting. In addition to the two frigates and destroyers, they'll also have a battlecruiser with them, with a small fighter escort. It's not safe for me to talk here. Watch yourself."

With that, the comm ends.

You inform Steel-Arrow, who curses bitterly.

Do you:

A. Begin laying mines.
B. Stealth and retreat to a safe perimeter.
C. Raise Night-Star and demand some answers.

You check your munitions, and ready your four mines. Beside you, Steel-Arrow informs you his four mines are ready as well.

You see the Night-Prowler's fleet disappear from the visual spectrum. They have entered stealth mode. However, you notice a new beacon being broadcasted from the shadow of where the flagship used to be. You recognize it as your mentor's signal.

Steel-Arrow asks you what pattern you should use for deploying the mines.

Do you answer:

A. Spread them out - try to catch the entire fleet as they come in.

You suggest deploying the mines in a wide spread, to catch the entire fleet when they jump in. Steel-Arrow agrees.

Together, your two ships circle the expected jump point and place the mines in a wide arc, to catch the Weyland ships.

You have a few moments before they arrive.

You notice the Night-Prowler flagship slowly pulling away.

Do you:

A. Engage stealth and pull back as well.
B. Engage stealth and prepare to take the enemy fleet head on.

You engage stealth and withdraw. The inbound jump signal is getting stronger by the minute.

"Straight towards the Night-Prowlers," he barks.

You prepare to get into position.

You coordinate your movement with Steel-Arrow, and the two of you begin your approach into position behind the impending fleet.

Burning-Scythe begins to count down the seconds before the inbound jump. As he reaches zero, a brilliant flash fills the space around you and several ships snap into existence before you.

Chaos ensues.

One of the Weyland frigates jumped right on top of one of the mines, and the resulting explosion violently breaks it in two.

An escort destroyer takes two mines head on, and disappears in a brilliant plasma fireball.

The second destroyer desperately banks to the side, and narrowly dodges an incoming mine.

A few seconds later, a large, 2 kilometer long battle-cruiser bearing the Weyland logo enters the fray. It belches forth thousands of tracers as its point defences activate, and the remaing mines are shot down.

Its hangar doors open and dozens of smaller, agile fighters pour forth, each firing concentrated sensor beacons at the space around it. Several head in your direction.

The remaining frigate and destroyer quickly resume formation around the large battlecruiser.

Do you:

A. Stay stealthed and observe.
B. Raise the Night-Prowlers and ask them to commence the attack.
C. Launch disruptor torpedoes at the battlecruiser (DC: Medium)

"What's the plan?" Steel-Arrow asks you.

"Remain stealthed. Observe."

There appears to be no response from the Night-Prowlers. Their flagship continues to quitely pull away.

>>C. Drop stealth and open fire on the human fleet (Critical failure)

You synchronize your targets with Steel-Arrow and commence attacking.

You line up your target, drop out of stealth, and let loose both your main cannons. Two white-hot plasma bolts belch forth from your massive cannons, racing towards the battlecruiser.

One of the bolts slam straight into a passing fighter and swallow it in its brilliance, and continues. The battle-cruiser, however, whether through luck or skill, burns its manuever thrusters at the same time as you pulled your trigger, and narrowly dodges th blasts.

The two plasma bolts scrape past the spine of the cruiser and disappear into deep space.

Suddenly, warnings flare all around you, and you find yourself pelted by autocannon fire. The fleet releases a large swarm of missiles, and head towards you.

You suddenly spot a brilliant flash from the muzzles of the cruiser's twin railgun turrets, and quickly bank, but the slugs are simply too fast.

They slam into your belly, and your ablative armors explode outwards from the impact. You feel your ship snap upwards violently.

Your stealth systems are temporarily down. Burning-Scythe informs you he'll try to get them back ASAP.

A flight of fighters and missiles close in on you.

Do you:

A. Throttle forward and spray them down with your gatling cannon.(DC: Medium-hard)

B. Turn around and try to shoot them down with your point defenses. (Fail, vs. DC 12)

You bank your ship sharply and flee from the inbound missiles. you engage your tracking systems and pour forth a wall of plasma bolts.

You manage to take down a large number, but there are simply too many.

Three of them slam sharply into your rear armor, one after the next. The first two shatter your ablative armor while the third detonates violently against the crystalline armor underneath.

You suddenly lose control of your ship as spalling crystal shards smash into your ship's left turbine. Warning lights flare as your thrusters go wild attempting to balance the craft.

Burning-Scythe slams down his visor and yells for Sharp-Strike to take the co-pilot's seat.

"Keep her steady!" he barks at you.

You glance at your sensors and note dozens of more missiles scream closer to impact.

You prepare for the worst.

Suddenly, a black shadow streaks behind you and the missiles explode sequencially. Steel-Arrow's voice booms over the comms.

"Got your back, but this is a mess. We need to kill those fights. One of us needs to hold their attention."

Do you tell him:

A. "They're already chasing me. I'll lead them away from the fleet. Get behind me and take them down."

"I'm hit. You need to get their attention and draw them across my firing arc," you respond on the comms.

"Right," Steel-Arrow responds curtly. You struggle to keep the ship in balance as Steel-Arrow's ship begin to open fire on the fighters.

He criss-crosses to and fro in front of your pursuers, and soon, several fighters break off to persue him.

You hear Burning-Scythe's voice behind you. "Damage under control. She's a tough ship, this one."

You notice the left turbine re-engage and suddenly feel control returning to your thrusters.

You hear Steel-Arrow's voice over the comms. "I'll be crossing your glacis in 10 seconds. Get ready."

A brilliant green hose extends from the nose of your ship and sprays the human fighters as they cross its arc of fire.

You methodcially line up your visor with each target, and watch as they become shredded by the cannon's awesome firepower. A moment later, the last human fighter distintegrates under fire, and you at last release the cannon trigger.

>C. Launch a disruptor torpedo at it. (DC: Medium)

You rotate the fission torpedo into firing position, line up your shot, and depress the trigger.

An audible warning scrolls across your visor.

"Three-Claw!" you hear Burning-Scythe's voice on the comms. "It's stuck. That belly hit we took earlier must have warped the missile pylons. Won't be able to launch any missiles until I can clear the jam, and I can't clear the jam until you land this sucker."

You click loudly in frustration.

You see a distant flash and quickly jerk your ship to the side, narrowly dodging an incoming slug. You're now within range of its railguns.

Do you:

A. Evasive manuevers and attempt to close the distance. (DC: Medium)
B. Fire the cannons now and hope for the best. (DC: Hard)
C. Break off the attack run and try again from a different angle. (DC: Easy)>>24951982

>>24952018
Huh, according to foolz I've used 1d20 exactly 12 times since 2008. And none of them rolled below 4... until now. Clearly the dice are not to be mocked!

Would it be possible to just ram through the hull of the destroyer? That would shield us from enemy fire and give us a few moments to land, unjam that damn torpedo and leave it behind.
>>
>>24952150
That seems sensible, that way we won't have to worry about crappy rolls.
>>
>>24952064
A. Evasive manuevers and attempt to close the distance. (Critical Success!)

You concentrate hard and dance between each bolt as they lance across space. The frigate looses a volley of missiles and rockets at you head on.

You depress the trigger on your gatling cannon and meet them head on with a curtain of plasma shards. The missiles and rockets detonate and dissapeear as your gunfire intersect them.

Dozens of autocannons breathe to life as you enter their range, but you weave and dodge through them.

You take a moment to judge the distance, and depress the triggers to your main cannons. You hear the two massive powerplants roar and two massive white-hot bolts are throw forward.

They catch the frigate straight on the mid-section and core it with ease. The resulting explosion snaps the ship in two. The two shapes linger for a moment, and a blinding fireball erupts from the reactor section, which swallows the ship whole.

You bank hard and blaze past the wreckage.

You glance at your sensors. Steel-Arrow is having some trouble with the destroyer. He's got the attention of the battle-cruiser and covering fire from the large ship's guns is making it difficult for him to approach.

Do you:

A. Join Steel-Arrow in his attack run against the destroyer
B. Attempt to assault the battle-cruiser and distract it.
>>
>>24952201
Or anything else, ever again.
>>
>>24952150
with enough dakka, anything is possible

We will be in plasma range now, and we can save torpedoes.
They might be jammed anyway.

I say we shoot, briefly hide in the wreckage then attack the cruiser.

>> B. Attempt to assault the battle-cruiser and distract it.

You race through the wreckage and rake the spine of the battlecruiser with your gatling cannon. You draw a line of fire across its dorsal autocannon turrets and manage to shred two of them.

You notice several of the turrets turn in your direction, and begin to spit fire towards you. You quickly evade their fields of fire and weave through them, stopping only to strafe the large craft.

Steel-Arrow, briefly given a moment's respite from the capital ship, takes the moment to charge the destroyer head on. He strafes its bow with a volley of rockets combined with a series of bore-cannon bursts.

The destroyer's front section crumples under the firepower as rocket after rocket slams lengthwise through the ship.

Steel-Arrow breaks away from the attack run, which leaves the destroyer a burning wreck.

You both turn your attention to the battlecruiser.

You yell over the comms, telling him that your missile bay is jammed.

"Right!" He responds, "Mine are fine. You just draw its fire. What should I hit? Engine? Bridge? Those railguns?"

You respond:

A. "Hit its engines!"
B. "Hit the bridge!"
C. "Get those railguns!
>>
>>24952339
B, it'll take them time to get to another bridge/bring things back up, which will give us time to board them.

>>A

"Hit its engines!" You bark. You bring the ship across the cruiser's rear and light up both of its rear-facing autocannons.

Steel-Arrow exploits the sudden blind spot in its point defenses and looses a disruptor torpedo toward the cruiser's rear. The torpedo impacts and the explosion warps the space around it.

The large ship's engine flares briefly, then dims, then finally darkens. The ship is now stranded.

Suddenly, the battlecrusier's spine erupts upwards and is ejected into space. Two large panels which extend half the length of the ship peels open.

A large, long tube-like device extends outwards, parallel to the length of the ship, and it begins to suddenly glow.

You can scarecely believe what the sensors are telling you. You recognize the patterns as it powers up. You suddenly realize with dread. You're looking at a crudely up-gunned version of a plasma-caster.

It's not from our previous trip.

Also -

I'm looking for feedback on the lengths of each session.

Currently, I tend to run for about 4 hrs.

If that's too long, or too short, kindly let me know.
>>
The quest runs pretty late in the day so I'm okay with it being short. Longer would be fun of course.
>>
>>24952560
This length is good for weekdays, since you start relatively late in most (US) timezones. On a weekend, longer sessions are awesome if you have the time and inclination.
>>
>>24952560
The length and density is about right, and you really know how to pack it in.
>>
>>24952684
This. the time and length you run these is right on the mark
>>
>>24952560
Yeah generally they run for just about the right time.
>>
>>24952560
my timezone means that the threads start around 2-3pm, as im currently unemployed this is no problem, but running longer would be good, if you can manage it
>>
>>24952560
This
>>24952613

Also, your update time is fucking phenomenal. Most other quest I've followed have 30+ minutes between major posts. You average closer to 15 for major posts, and 10 for shorter ones, which is pretty insane. Keep up the good work.
>>
>>24952560
>>24952795
This indeed. Actually, your very responsive nature makes me wonder: would you consider switching to vote-then-roll, rather than roll-with-vote? Give players a little time to vote, then call for a 1d20 if their chosen option requires a roll.
>>
>>24952810
That might be a good idea actually. Shit gets a bit confusing when you've got people voting for 3+ different things with different DCs or that don't even require a roll in the first place.

Waiting until AFTER voting to call for the actual roll would reduce confusion quite a bit.
>>
>>24952810
That would also solve the problem of rolls votejacking the course of the game, or people basing their decisions on whether or not a choice involves rolling.
>>
>>24952831
I'd still like to see the vague DCs posted with options; I'd just like to see the choice made before any rolling.

Two big advantages:

1) People don't suddenly opt for an option because it rolls a 19.
2) Crits and critfails don't trump voting.
>>
>>24952810
>>24952829
>>24952831
is good idea
>>
>>24952871
this is something to consider, but having the rolls called for after the choice is chosen (even with DC displayed) would work well
>>
>>24952880
I'm confused. You said "this is something to consider, but ...", but you seem to be agreeing.
>>
>>24952892
as in, maybe the current system has the desired effect for OP, crits (either way) stop votes early and speed things up, however terrible 1's are, having rolling done after choice selection would slow things down, but thats not much of a concern with OP's speed
>>
Oh, OP, if you read this, please add the 'gear list picture' to your second post? And I think the 'Mission to Pandora' might need to be changed too.

Wish I was awake for these quests!
