You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

You're still trapped in the Grove of Joy, but you've managed to disrupt the Dramatae's budding monster army.

Also, as a bonus, you've finally cornered Tragedy. No more escapes, no more giant constructs (Or giant monsters if you believe Tricia, even though she's wrong), and no more bullshit that's protects him or lets him escape.

The Dawnchasers vs. Tragedy.

Someone's gonna die.

>>
So Tragedy, is a giant ball of corpses that shoots magic lasers a monster or a construct?
>>
>>25118062
We said it was a monster, Tricia said it was a construct
>>
>>25118087
Yes, we need to ask him.

Also, something I realize: WE are the ones with a hostage now. The maw. We should start making demands of the dramatae.
>>

>>
>>25118087
"So Tragedy, is a giant ball of corpses that shoots magic lasers a monster or a construct?" You ask.

"What? Ugh, enough of your mindless insane chattering!"

Tragedy has 12 wounds.
He hits on 14+
You only wound him on 14+

He has four nasty surprises.

No healing spells.

Two actions per round. (Mask Haste)

Crits will only cause a stall.

Enlightenment will NOT destroy the mask.

He can cast spells & he has a Blade of Dramatae which is a replica of the blade known as Soma.

Roll for initiative and give initial orders for the Dawnchasers. (Julian's plan is to Attack With Righteous Fury and little else. He's a Red Occuli Paladin, it's his forte.)

You are currently equipped with Beacon and Clang.

You lunge forward, jaw open, fangs extended. You leap and smash into Tragedy, and you snap out your jaws and bite down hard on the man's arm.

"AH!" He screeches. "Oh, no you DON'T!" He says.

Before you can inject the poison, There's a flare of light and Tragedy's...not there. You've got a mouthful of nothing. Also, Tragedy's a few feet away, still wearing his mask and a new set of robes. You see the two wounds from your fangs his arm bleeding, and he's panting, but he blinked before you had a chance to inject.

(Tragedy can blink at will, but it costs him one of his two turns)

Also, we crossed like 20 feet and bit a guy fast. Real fast. I would be screaming like a girl at that, too.
>>

"Nice trick." Mage says. "Try this one!" Mage slams his staff on the ground. He's trying to turn the ground into mud to slow Tragedy up.

Lea hangs back and waits for Mage's spell to go off.

Mari hangs back and tries to get a grip on Tragedy's style. It's not going to be easy. (Target: 40)

You feel the round rumble a little.

Twice.

Tricia tries to summon a large enough swarm.
>>
>>25118929
GOD DAMMIT MAGE!

Way to fuckin go.
>>

Mage swears as all that happens to the ground is some sparks. "Thrice damned Citadel Enchanted ground!" He swears.

A swarm of wasps emerge from Tricia's free sleeve. "Get him!" She snaps. The wasps buzz around Tragedy, but unlike others they seem to not do that much to distract him. They don't even seem to be able to get inside the mask.

Julian lets out a wordless roar, and charges Tragedy, sword drawn. (+1 to hit.)

Tragedy's forced to respond to the attacking Paladin.

You feel the ground rumble for a third time.

Another thing about these rumbles, you can tell because so much of you is on the ground at once...they're not coming from the same place. There's not one thing rumbling once, there's three different things causing the disturbances.

If we get a moment during which Julian or Lea has forced him to blink, we might want to poison Beacon, or pounce on him to force him to skip a turn completely/take the poison.

Mage decides to forego any subtlety or clever tactics for now and goes to plan 'shoot him in the head with fire.'

Lea does a jab at Tragedy.

Mari continues her study.

You honestly don't remember seeing the bracers on Lea until AFTER the necrosphere explosion, which was about the same time that the sphere spawned Lea's Father and gave off that weird spell...

Anyway, I see two votes for a double attack. Who are you attacking?

Lea. Tell her what we're trying to do, maybe take a few hits and charge Beacon, wrap her, and try to rip the gauntlets off.

Your tail wraps around Lea's arms and slams her to the ground. Lea lets out a pained grunt and looks at you with one eye that's calm and unfeeling, the other one is Lea's look when she was freaking out about her father.

Your jab with the spear is dead on. He still blinks away, but too late. He's got another bleeding wound on him.

"MONSTER BITCH!"

"Let...me...go." Lea says in a calm measured voice that is hers but you know isn't hers.

Rolled 16, 15, 15, 1, 13 = 60

"This is an abomination in His sight, old man, and I won't allow it to continue." You say. "I'll let Lea go when she asks; you however will remain constricted as long as possible."

"Ssen?" Mage asks. "What's going on?"

Lea struggles in your grip trying to break free. "This is what she wants, lamia. I asked, and she agreed to let me help her. She's not fighting me, like in those Lightbringer stories. Let me go and I'll stop Tragedy for you. I promise."

"Just shoot, Mage!" Mari yells as she continues to study Tragedy.

Mage fires at Tragedy, who's still stunned from that last blink, which must have been painful.

The ground erupts, and you see two giant centipedes burst out of the ground.

Tricia's ready for them and slashes at one of them. (Bonus +2)

Tragedy's stunned and he blinked.

Julian goes to attack him.

The third centipede arrives as well.
>>
>>25121599

Tragedy dun goofed.

Everybody rocked.

Don't let the old man go. Tell him to prove that Lea wants it.
>>
>>25121599
Huh, I'm stunned. I can't think up any witty remarks.

Either way, lea isn't talking for herself, and that's worrying. I suggest this:

"Helping? All you're doing is throwing her off her game! Stop distracting her!"
>>
>>25121599
Mage and Julian both hit the stunned Tragedy.

Tricia swings...but her scythe gets caught in a chitin plate and rips from her hand it, it lands on the ground and she dives to get it back.

Lea breaks free of your grip, but you see a little bit of a birthmark form on her face. The effort of breaking free, as well as just being in combat, isn't sitting well with the old man apparently.

Your turn.

For your information the centipedes are all grey and reek of dead flesh. They're even a bit more disgusting as they have human eyes on their 'heads.' These are Tricia's Aunt, no question.
>>
>>25121599
"Lea keeps telling me to be the Paladin, and that's what I'm going to do. And if she DID actually agree to this, that just means we're going to have a LONG FUCKING CHAT ABOUT IT."
>>
>>25121599
"You have a very bad habit of speaking for Lea whether she likes it or not."
>>
>>25121697
Well, shit. we need to deal with tragedy, sandworms, AND lea.

Lea is the most concerning. I suppose we can't actually get the bracers off of her without her say-so?

Then continue piercing tragedy so as to build beacon charge.

>>25121725

Thirded.

"There's this little problem of me not trusting you at all. Let Lea go. Her life is no longer any of your business."
>>
>>25121866
she got better when she was forced to try and break free, her father has control so I really doubt we even could take them off unless she is wrapped.
>>
>>25121599
>"This is what she wants, lamia. I asked, and she agreed to let me help her. She's not fighting me, like in those Lightbringer stories. Let me go and I'll stop Tragedy for you. I promise."
...I'm half-inclined to believe him.

Mainly because he's no longer in that undead body, and thus not under the control of the Dramatae.
>>
>>25121697
Bite Tragedy and get those cuffs off Lea
>>
>>25121697
She 'wants' the opposite of everything she stands for controlling her body? I doubt that. Now go back to your corpse
>>
>>25121913
I don't. Mainly because he doesn't ask. He commands.
>>
>>25121913

So, I see a vote for rewrapping Lea/attack Tragedy, one for a straight attack, and one for just trying to rip the bracers off of Lea.
>>
We should REALLY tell him that he's messing up lea's game.

>>
>>25122052

Wrap and attack.
>>
>>25122052

Straight attack.

"Let Lea go. You are her father, not her dictator. Let her go, or I swear on the Light, I will make you let her go."
>>
How much of a charge does beacon have? We'll need to use it on Lea.
>>
>>25122052
We need to do something about lea for sure, getting tragedy to blink again would be a bonus
>>
>>25122133
I'd rather we not do too much damage to Lea herself. Those bracers are obviously shady as shit.
>>
>>25122170

Which is why I voted for straight attack. If Lea's dad attacks Tragedy, that's fine, but I'd prefer Lea being in control.
>>
>>25122170
The attack is for tragedy
>>
>>25122052

You swipe at Tragedy, it's a perfect shot...that he naturally blinks out of the way from. Still Beacon starts glowing like crazy, and the usual gleam from the others is showing up...save for Lea and Julian.

Mage shoots a bolt of electricity at one of the centipedes.

Lea shakes her head and swipes at one of the other centipedes. "I tell Lea what's the right thing to do!" She says. "Have I ever been wrong?" "No, Father." "I've ALWAYS provided for you and the family, you NEVER went hungry, and you were ALL skilled! Aren't you USING my teachings? Didn't good COME from me having you read the Teachings?" "Yes Father." "So, attack those centipedes, they don't discriminate friend from foe." "Yes, Father."

Lea kicks at another centipede.

Mari has a bead on Tragedy and is shouting out tactics. (+1 bonus)

You swipe at Tragedy with your tail. Like always, the bastard blinks away, but this time, Mari points and you lunge and the bastard reappears JUST in time to pierce the fucker right in the side. No blinking out of THIS one, AND Beacon is fully charged.

Mage shoots another lightning bolt at the centipede.

"You NEED me Lea! You know I'm the best at this style, you've seen my trophies, how the other pit fighters all respect me. You can be better Lea, but I will always have that little edge, you know I'm right Lea. Lea...Lea...Lea are you being ungrateful again? Answer me, child. One moment..." Lea jabs at a Centipede.

Mari keeps at the fringes of the fight, watching Tragedy's style.

for now I am going for group buff, but if he is still there by the time Beacon charges again, than its enlightenment time.
>>
>>25123551
He's too arrogant for that. Making him see just how wrong he is about his skill would be better.
>>
>>25123579
That's just the wrong order. The group buff won't affect Lea while he's there. You do it the other way around you get an extra buffed attack.
>>
>>25123551
Or we could get Lea to resist. Because she can do it. It's what she NEEDS to do... both in this situation and for her own morale.

We didn't make it easy for that hairdressing Lightbringer. Why should we make an exception here?
>>
>>25123612
I'm still of the mind we should slap them darn bracers off and then ACTIVATE THE MORNINGSTAR SYSTEM
>>
>>25123612

>>
If Lea doesn't pull her head away from her father's crotch we are gonna need to have a very serious discussion with her.
>>
>>25123643
yep. he had BETTER take those fucking things off and let her go so she gets to take the buff.

Rolled 16 + 4

"And yet you deliberately did not teach her everything of the fighting style, you ALWAYS held something back like that arrow snatching move from earlier.

"You are the one holding her back now." You say.

"Let me show you how far Lea has surpassed YOU."

You slam Beacon's end into the ground, and the world is enveloped in Light.

Mage cracks off two lighting bolts, one after another into two different centipedes.

Mari fires a bolt into another, then back to her position.

Tricia concentrates, and part of the cenitpede that she was trapped out of, bursts open and a cloud of flies swarms around her then around the Centipedes, blocking their vision.

Tragedy shrieks and holds his hands to his face.

Julian gapes for a moment, then takes a swing at Tragedy.

And Lea...Lea does a strange move...she kicks one foot out at a centipede, which hits. It the same time she snaps her body back, one arm flying loose. Then she snaps her torso and fist towards it, in a move that makes everyone else wince as they imagine what her spine must feel like.

You just feel flattered...she's developed her own double attack move from watching your movements. Lamia style.

Either way the whipped fist slams into the centipede's head shell and shatters it like an egg. She pulls away a hand of goo, and her scarred, blemished, and blotchy face smiles at you.

THIS IS MY DESTINY! I AM THE ONE WHO OWNS ALL OF THEM! NO ONE CONTROLS ANYTHING IN MY WORLD BUT ME!"

The Dawnchasers have this bastard's number. You lunge and sink your fangs into his shoulder. He blinks, and Mari points, and when Tragedy reappears he gets a facefull of hurtling Lamia tail. The impact is MOST satisfying.

Mage shoots at the centipedes.

Lea goes to the Centipedes and does her lamia style double-strike.

"Doesn't that hurt?!" Mari asks.

"Not really." Lea says. "It takes training, exercise, and good balance. You bend your spine less than you think, it's all about the force of motion and positioning of the enemy." Lea says. "It less on how Ssen bends, and how Ssen moves so she can use a spear or pike weapon as a viable option in close quarter combat."

"Oh." Mari says.

"You sleep too much, you're going to skip your training with your father." Ssuah Patrick says.

You slide yourself free and wriggle down to the kitchen. Father's there early, like always, and you curl up his leg and then latch onto his arm. He smiles at you and flexes, you laugh and then uncoil onto the ground.

Mother comes down, and she and Father hug and kiss briefly. You gag a little, but just enough for them to know you're in the room.

Father sets down breakfast for everyone, and for a few moments there's just the quiet of the morning as you all eat.

"So, Ssen." Liam says. "Are you sure you're ready to use a sword? They aren't toys. You wave it around like one, and I will take it away."

"Julian!" You shout. "Hang back, that's swords killer to humans! Help Tricia! She's hurt!"

Mage and Lea both attack the last centipede.
>>
Ah, first dramatae kill, I think.

I wonder how we will gain access to barbs because of this.

I vote that it goes down like this: We finish tragedy, go and save the elves and soldiers, head on home, and demand dinner because fuck we're hungry. They say it can't be done right now for SOME reason, either hostility or logistics. Then we bristle everything, including barbs, and say "what." as calmly as we can manage. They then arrange dinner.

This is how I predict it will go down. If I am correct, then you will all praise me as a sorceror.

Mage blasts open a hole in the chitin and Lea's whip fast, graceful, and exceptionally painful-looking lamia style punches a hole in the centipede.

Tricia just shakes her head, to get her mind back into focus.

Tragedy pulls himself up, having gotten over his exhaustion from blinking so much so rapidly.

(FYI: 1: The Sword's effects, 2: Lea's Father, 3: The Centipedes, 4: The blinking. Those were the surprises.)

Julian is at her side, giving her a healing potion.

You gasp for air, your mind is assaulted by a bunch of images, you feel yourself being pulled...and you can see your body...and a small gem in Tragedy's hand.

No...no...the fucker's going to rip out and trap your soul!

You strain, and pull, do whatever you can think of to stop this. You see your body flop and writhe on the ground. The other Dawnchasers lunge towards you or Tragedy, but he points the flaming sword at them and they pause.

That gem is getting larger now. No...please no. A lot of the other things in the world are blurring out of focus, save for the gem.

You twist and jerk and thrash. You see your body respond to your commands...but slower, like it takes a while for your mind and body to connect.

The world starts to lose color...save for that green emerald in Tragedy's hand...its really the only thing you CAN see.

You try one last thing. It's going to be painful as hell...but you have you try.

Your barbs rip out of your tail and you lash it out at Tragedy. The tail is slow and it barely taps Tragedy's arm. He's not even paying attention...which is why he starts and drops the gem when your barbs dig into him.

The emerald hits the ground, and the connection is severed.

And just like that, you're back in your body...and you flex your barbs. They aren't as big as you thought they'd be, and they probably aren't that great against heavy armor, chain might even be a problem...but they could shred leather at least, and you can always poison them with Black.

And even better, Tragedy's all yours.

He holds his sword at you, slowly backing away. He shakes his head. "No...no..." He swallows. You know he's starting to see it. Just as Robin and his crew wanted. He sees it coming. "Don't...don't kill me. You do, you do and you'll never get out of here!" He says.

You lunge at him and he screams as you sink your fangs into his neck. You inject the poison and let go.

Tragedy puts hand to his bleeding neck as he staggers towards the archway. He's breathing heavily. He has to get away...get away before it happens.

Gone are the threats, the taunts the spells. He needs to escape...to get away...before...before...

He screams in pain as one of his legs collapses on him, he drops to the ground and tries to claw his way to the archway. He gets a few feet before he starts to shriek at the fact that he can't move his arms.

Before his other leg goes limp and blue on him he manages to flip himself over. He looks at the clear sky...and you see his chest slowly collapse in on him, and he makes little gasping breaths.

His neck has stopped bleeding, and his head is still intact. It must be the mask. You hear him making little pained gulping gasps as his lungs take in what little air they can.

clear means we try to redeem the darkness, and if we cant we are a holy avenger, not some pure white thing too afraid to use our natural abilities.

Leave the blade where it struck. Grab the hand.

Wait a bit, before breaking the silence.

"I think I might have gotten carried away."

Is there a caligo equivalent of crossing yourself? We should do one of those and give an abridged rites of the dead

I am terrible at rites of the dead, but something like "May he find his way out of the darkness".

We were standing over him with our sword, and he was begging for mercy.

We could have just killed him right there.

Just a moment. Make sure everyone gets a piece.

Then get back to work. We've got a bunch of uncorrupted and half-corrupted "monsters" running around in a grove that we have no idea how to get out of, and we still need to catch Comedy.
>>
>>25127133
if we had bit him during the fight that would have been fine, but biting him when we quite clearly could have killed him painlessly is not the kind of thing a paladin should do.

though given he was exhausted rather than helpless, and we mercy killed him after we bit him its more of a stumble than a fall.

"Walk with the Light, Lord Holting. May your journey's end be more peaceful, and less frightening than it's beginning. Amen." You say.

You retract your barbs and you hug everyone of the Dawnchasers.

"I'm sorry." You say to both Tricia and Lea.

Lea looks at you. "And who am I to tell you about moral failings now?" She sniffs. She's crying. "You attacked him with the weapons you had, and you ended it quickly, once it was done." She nods and sighs. "Fuck him."

"He didn't deserve mercy." Peri says.

"None of that." Lea says. "All deserve mercy, even them...but in this case...mercy was a swift death." She looks at you. "Learn from this, know what you did wrong, do better next time." She smiles at you. "You're still a Paladin...and my sister." She smiles at you.

"I... I think we should probably get back to work." You say. "Let's get this gate open, clean up whatever mess Comedy is bound to have made and after that get something to eat. I'm starving."

"We've been doing fine with the apples." Mage says, as he tosses one to you. "I know it's not meat, but you said that you could eat a little plant life, and at this point, food's food right?"

You look at the apple suspiciously, as you have done all fruit. You sniff it. Doesn't seem bad. And Mage is right, food is food. You take a bite and swallow.

Ugh...it's...really really sweet. Also the texture is kinda gross. Still, it's /something/ in your stomach, and it'll keep hunger pains away until you find some REAL food. But that's probably going to be the one and only apple you'll ever eat.

"Holy shit." Mab says, coming out from her hiding spot in the trees. "Is THAT the kind of shit that my darling daughter can pull?"

"No," Mari says. "Odds are she's going to be worse."

"Yeah, well...fuck that noise. Have fun with her." She looks at the arch. "So...now what?"

Mage picks up the emerald. He looks at the arch, the emerald, and then at Ssen.

"Hey, Ssen...can I see your bracelet for a second?" He asks.

You hand it over. He touches it to the archway. He smiles. "Okay...that's interesting. Not sure how it helps us, but interesting."

"Explain or get punched." Peri says.

"Rage used these things, same as the others, so the bracelet is attuned to the archway. Just like it was to the spheres." He frowns. "Unfortunately, they've severed the connection that used to be here."

"So it doesn't work anymore?" Peri says.

"Not if there was a reaction!" Mari says. "I get it. I get it!" She nods. "All we need is to jumpstart the energies that work between the arch and the bracelet and it'll work again...or at least for a few moments."

"Or it'll blow up the rest of the grove we didn't already." Mage says. "Either way, we're getting out of here."

>>
>>25127255

"I'm glad. I'm going to go start rubbing all of our magic things on that gate to make something happen, starting with the bracelet key. Someone find mab, she's pretty magical. Mage too."

>>
We could probably just swallow the apple whole... if we unhinge our jaw like a snake. Can we do that?
>>
>>25127642
did we decide on anything to do with the white scales?

We could leave them here, where they will either starve to death or be recaptured by the citadel.

We could try to beacon them, but it could take days or months of time.

We could capture and move them somewhere, but that's quite dangerous for everyone involved.

We could kill them, but they're at our mercy and it's not quite right.

We could overload the translators and have them just go mad, but that's even worse.

"You know, I'm actually kind of liking the yellow boots." Mage says.

"Well he's going native." Mari says.

Julian taps you on the shoulder and pulls you aside as the others work on jumpstarting the gate. "First...let me say this child...you are an instrument of His Light, I felt His Presence when you used your Father's Weapon...THE weapon of your order." He actually kneels to you. "I think that some would call you one of the First Embers reborn...the first sparks that came off of of His Light that struggled within the Endless Darkness." He smiles at you and gets back up. "But I think you're not one for that kind of meaningless flattery." He sighs as he looks out at the grove. "These monsters and Elves, they may be stuck here for a while until you can get more portals open for longer...provided that this one doesn't blow us all up." He says. "Also the Maw needs to be dealt with...and someone has to make sure that if the last two of those demons come back, they'll get an appropriate welcome." He looks at you. "I'm sure you can guess where this is going."

"Someone needs to stay here." You say.

"There's game in the woods...well, the parts that we haven't destroyed. I assume they had to feed their army somehow...and I've lived off worse than apples for longer." He nods. "And I know you won't give up." He smiles.

"Do what needs to be done Uncle, I will not stop you. But please don't try and fight Comedy or Peace by yourself. We need you alive to apologize to the elves. It's part of the treaty."

He nods. "I am aware, Mab explained it to me while you were out cold, in detail." He takes out a small wooden disc. "This should at least get them to not kill me on sight." He smiles. "You know, I've been fighting elves so long, I'm fluent in their tongue and customs?" He laughs. "The whirlwind of change that surrounds the Paladin Serpent got me too."

You hug him. "Just...try not to think of them as "monsters." Remember, Uncle, they have souls too."

"After today, Lady Paladin Patrick, I could never forget." He says.

"Ssen! Julian!" You hear Mage yell. "Come over here and get ready to get blown up!"

You hand him the woodsman's compass. "I'll see to it you get some proper food in here, reinforcements too. Apples... nobody should have to live on that." You make a face.

You two go over to the others. Julian explains his plan, the others take it with the calm non-plussedness of people who hear a good idea that they don't like, but accept. Mage explains how the Rosetta Spires work, twice, then Mari translates and writes down a quick cheat sheet.

"Okay...let's do this." Mage says as he holds Mab's hand, Tragedy's soul gem, and the pass bracelet to the archway. "When you see the trees change, GO. Don't pause for ANYTHING."

Mab starts to focus and her hair gets those green sparks. The gem starts to glow as well, and Mage starts to chant. You feel the hairs and scales on you back prickle, and the grass seems to bend AWAY from the arch. Then...you see it! Different trees!

"Go! Go!" Mari yells.

It's all...kind of anti-climatic. You just walked through. No tingle no nothing. Although it is a little jarring to look around and see you're in one of the wooded apartments of the Fey court, and behind you is the Grove of Joy.

You turn to see Mab and Mage jump through, they also seem to be a little disappointed at the lack of drama.

You're looking a Julian, smiling and saluting you...and then you're looking at a wall.

Well, may His Light watch over him, and you'll see him soon.

"This is Thistleblossom's room." Mab says. "Okay," She motions for you all to follow her as she opens the door and sweeps through looking very regal. "So, we find the assembly, I declare Mage to be Dagda, then we kick that bitch out because I don't want to fight her in MY home." She opens up a large pair of double doors. "Because it's bound to be a...total...slaughter..." She stares. "No..."

It's a carnage house. Disemboweled, decapitated, gutted, and just stabbed to death...the large feast hall you were in is filled with the dead elvish assembly.

Judging by the deaths of the corpses, you see death by insect bites, snapped necks and punches that broke bone, and sword wounds. Her beloved undead lackeys were busy too.

Comedy's apparently cut her losses, kept YOU from getting anything more from the elves, and is long gone.

"She left a note." Lea says as she pulls a note free that was stabbed to the table.

So... we just dispersed the monster army.
