You are JOE RAMIREZ, mercenary for hire extraordinaire. You've made a living fighting in Sapin's various brushfire wars for more sides and factions than you are physically capable of remembering.

Today you are fighting for the Sapin Liberation Movement For Freedom and Justice, or something like that. You're sure they're going to change the name again in three months or so. Then again, it's not as if the People of Sapin's Democratic Freedom Movement, which you were fighting, were much better at naming themselves.

"Oh, Ramirez, good to see we picked the same side this time." Sergeant Foley nods at your presence. "This'll make thing a lot easier for all of us."

Like you, Sergeant Foley was a freelance mercenary plying his trade in Sapin. However, unlike you, Foley didn't work solo. He had his own small group he rolled with. You fight together, and against, each other for quite a few years now.

"Easy money's the best kind." You shrug. What are we doing today?"

"Oh, the same old. Take and hold a village that's traded hands three times this past week." Foley rolls a map open. "Nothing special, just your regular run of the mill village."

"So why are we fighting over it?"

"Because the other side's holding it, of course. Obviously it must be important!" Foley says sarcastically. "We're going in with limited numbers, so this is going to have be a lightning op. You up for it?"

"Totally." You nod.

"Good, you get the pick of the assignments."

Every faction in Africa calls themselves by these noble names Liberation-this, Patriotic-that, Democratic Republic of something-or-other. Two hours later, you see that "doing their own thing" is charging fortified MG nests screaming and firing wildly. Naturally, the casualties are horrendous.

Meanwhile, you and Foley's men are taking cover behind an overturned wagon. Foley takes quick look at the situation and frowns.

"Two MG nests and one sniper position. We need to get rid of those if we want to get in the village."

"Is that it?" You ask.

"Ramirez, flank those positions!" Foley commands. "We'll provide supporting fire!"

You feel a hammerblow right in the center of your chest, stopping you in the middle of your mad dash and sending you stumbling into the dirt. Fortunately for you, the sniper doesn't make a follow up shot, thinking the first one downed you for good. As far as you can tell, the bullet didn't penetrate your armor, but it still hurts like hell whenever you breathe, probably from a broken rib or two.

So you're left with a couple of choices, none of which are exactly ideal.

>Well now I have to use this.

Sprinting your way over the last MG nest, you slide to a stop right under the window where the barrel of the MG is sticking out. Priming your frag grenade, you stand up to get a good look through the window. Inside, you see a trio of enemy gunners, who just seem to stare stupidly at you.

"Boom, motherfuckers." You say before dropping the cooking frag grenade through the window and ducking for cover.

The entire floor is blown out by the explosion, and the second gun is silenced. With the defense line in shambles, your allies begin pushing in the village proper.

"Good job, Ramirez!" Foley says and he leads his squad to your position. "I knew you could do it!"

"What the hell were you guys doing?" You ask suspiciously.

"Providing suppressing fire, of course!" Foley says, a bit offended. "Here."

He hands you a flamethrower attachment for your SMG.

"Next objective is to clear out town hall. Let's move!"

Now that they're inside the village, your allies are starting to do a bit better. They're not dying as horribly right now, but they're not exactly making very good progress, either.

"Ramirez! Clear out the town hall with that flamethrower!" Foley yells, pointing towards a large, rather intimidating structure in the center of town.

As you near the building, you can see a squad of men hastily setting up defensive positions in preparation for the impending assault. Deciding that there's no other way then to go forward, you bar the door, sliding the heavy lock into place. You can hear pounding and yelling on the other side. However, you doubt they would blow the door down or anything, considering they would compromise their own defenses.

There's three places you can go to clear. The archives, which is located in the basement. It would mostly be used for storage of records, though it's highly likely that they would also use it to store supplies. There was the meeting hall, which would most likely be as a command center or barracks, and there was the roof, where you would have a very good vantage point of the surrounding area.

In between the shelves, you can see crates of supplies stacked wherever they could be jammed into.

You can also hear soft creaking and thumps of boots on wood elsewhere in the archives. You aren't alone down here.

Now that you think about it, it probably wasn't that great of an idea to burn down the building, considering your bosses presumably wanted it captured intact, but you've honestly have had a pretty shitty day so far, and your armor is pretty much torn to shreds, so you're really in no mood to risk your life continuing to clear out this building piecemeal by yourself. Hell, you don't even know how many enemies are still in here.

So you decide to take the simple route. One small burst from your flamethrower is enough to set the dry, dusty books in the archives alight. Pretty soon it will spread to the rest of the stored munitions and... well... you shouldn't be there when it happens.

You sprint back up the stairs. Knowing the front door is no good as an escape route, you had towards the back of the build and dive out of a smashed window. Behind you, the stored munitions finally cook off and the bottom half of the town hall is blown out, with the top half quickly engulfed by the raging inferno.

It's at this point Foley and your SLMFFJ allies finally catch up, only to see you walking casually towards them as the town hall collapses into a flaming pile of debris.

"Ramirez, when I said 'clear the town hall', I didn't mean to literally clear it off the map." Foley shakes his head, but is grinning while doing so. "Good job, son."

Achievement Unlocked: Some Men Just Want to Watch the World Burn

However, at that point, you can hear a deep rumbling sound.

"Uhhhh, sir, does our side have tanks?" You ask nervously.

"No, Ramirez, we certainly do not." Foley sighs. "TAKE COVER!"

On the other side of the square, a trio of M3 tanks trundles in, firing their cannons wildly as your allied troops scurry for cover.

"Lancers! We need lancers!" Foley yells. "Where's Carranzo?"

"Dead, sir." One of his men replies.

"Damnit!" Foley turns to you. "Ramirez! There should some lances stowed on the transport convoy over there! Grab a lance and destroy those tanks!"

You go over what weapons you have on you right now:

SMG
Flamethrower
Sniper Rifle
4 Grenades

And you're facing against 3 enemy tanks....

If they're open, I suggest trying to get in close and hijack one.

We could also try to drop a grenade in, but that would most likely only work once and there are three of them.

I think the typical CoD player would have taken the kill streak award so they can get more kills so they can get better stuff so they can get more kills, etc.

Then again this might be CoD before it became a creativity killing cancer on the vidya market and its fans at the time actually played with skill.

Looking at the attacking tanks for possible weaknesses, you see that the three tanks are in a loose formation, but still close enough to cover each other. Also, you notice that the lead tank has its hatch open, with what you assume is the commander giving orders from it. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like anybody as the presence of the to just shoot the guy.

After finding a good spot, you try to center your crosshairs...

With a CRACK, the commander jerks and tumbles back into the hatch, his tank grinding to a halt. The other two tanks stop as well, unsure of what to do now that their commander is down. However, that doesn't stop them from continuing their indiscriminate fire.

>>25129971
You leap down to the ground level, making sure to keep the disabled tank between you and the other tanks. You also drop a grenade down the open hatch for good measure, to make sure its knocked out for good. There's a dull WHUMP and smoke begins to rise from the open hatch.

You then wait for a gap in the tanks' firing before making a sprint to the next tank. You manage to get close enough where its weapons can't reach you. Aiming at the vulnerable engine, you release a gout of flame directly onto it, setting it on fire and causing it to overheat. The tank then desperately tries to reverse.

>What now?
>>
>>25130153
Keep burning till the engine gives

You manage to keep pace with the tank easily, since its engine is crippled from the flames. There's then a loud BANG as the engine completely blows out, and presumably the fuel lines soon after. I desperation, the hatch pops open and the driver climbs out, pistol aimed at you.

Well, the driver was fast, but you were faster than he was. The driver screams as the flames engulf his face and he topples back into the tank. You have the good sense to take some cover before the vehicle explodes from its cooked ammunition.

Fortunately, that leaves one tank left. Unfortunately, it now knows where you are, and your flamethrower sputters and dies as its fuel is expended.

The final tank, rather than try and fight you, speeds up toward where the bulk of your allied forces, including Foley, are pinned down.

Unfortunately, your grenades just weren't enough to stop the tank fully. True, one of the manages to severely damage a track, forcing the tank to slow down slightly, but now it's raising all sorts of hell among your allies, its cannons and machineguns letting loose.

"Ramirez!" You hear Foley yell. "Over here!"

You see Foley sprinting toward the tank. It's too busy firing at the other troops to notice him and he clambers up, trying to pull the hatch open.

"Ramirez, help me pop this hatch! He yells."

With the tank's track damaged, it's moving slow enough that you might be able to catch it.

"Afternoon." You say as nonchalantly as you can. "This is mighty fine tank you have here. Be shame if something happen to it."

The driver tries to pull out his pistol, but you're faster. You easily disarm him and point the pistol at his face.

"Nothing personal, man. Just my job."

And you pull the trigger.

The deed done, you hop off of the tank and slump down on its side, suddenly very, VERY tired. Foley slumps down alongside you.

"I have to admit." Foley sighs. "That was pretty hardcore, even for you. Never seen a guy take out three tanks like that."

"Yeah, well it wasn't good enough." You say, glancing at all the bodies laying about.

"Bullshit. Not many people could've pulled it off, and you're one of them." Foley says reassuringly.

"Foley, just what the hell are we doing out there?" You wonder, looking up at the smoky sky.

"Getting paid?" He shrugs. "Gotta pay the bills somehow."

"Yeah, but... I don't know. What difference does it make that we're here or not? These bastards are going to keep fighting, and this town is going to fall back into 'enemy' hands eventually." You say, wondering why you're talking about this. Somehow, the fighting just started to seem dull... routine. You don't get that rush from being in danger anymore. Something seems missing...

"Son, if you're going to ask shit like that, I think you need to take a vacation. Get out of Sapin and see what things are like out there." Foley shakes his head. "I'm at the age where I don't really give a shit any more. If you want to find a reason to fight other than for a paycheck, well, you'll have to find it yourself."

You know, maybe he was right. For a lazy bastard, he could sure be pretty helpful sometimes.

"Thanks, sir. Maybe I'll do that." You grin.

I like to imagine that Ramirez gets drunk, very drunk, and tells these stories to the other Demons.

"So there I was, they just said 'Ramirez take out those tanks with a few grenades and a flamethrower', they always say 'Ramirez blank that blank with your blank', they never even think to say please or to thank me afterwards, that's why I like you guys, never yell at me to solve everything myself. Right, where was I, yes, tanks, 3 of them, they just blew up the convenient crate of lances, and I had to deal with them all.

I took the first out by blowing the commander's head off and throwing a grenade down the empty hatch, second one I overheated the engine and it exploded itself, third one I had to blow out the tracks with grenades, force the hatch open, and shoot the man in it with his own pistol.

That's why I left, if I stayed in Sapin I would have eventually been asked to hold off an advancing army with two tin cans, some string, and a raw onion, only one here who could do that is Heloise."

I bet drunken storytelling with the Demons is hilarious.
