The box drops from your hands and onto Kyuubey's desk with a damp squelch. The stench of blood immediately wafting from it as its gruesome contents bounces up to knock the lid loose.

The Incubator blinks at this, then up at you. Its expression managing to depict mild annoyance despite its unchanging features.

"...You will, of course, explain to me why you've just dumped a severed head on top of my paperwork, Matsuda."

You don't need to fucking explain anything, you growl at him. All he needs is to look inside the goddamn box and connect the dots himself.

Another blink, another moment of silence. And it's then that he obliges you.

"...Ah."

Ah. That's all he says? 'Ah'?

"...I'd say something about not losing your head, Matsuda, but I do feel that it's not the proper statement to make at the moment."

You are a Magical Girl, and it's been a long day. A very long day.

And it's not even over yet.

It started off well enough. You managed to reach a civil agreement with Miki Sayaka without either of you trying to stab each other in the face. You managed to delegate this week's high-profile missions and make some important decisions without embarrassing yourself too much. You got your new office on the way to being straightened out. You managed to cheer up a bedridden Callidus, and even cleared the air - mostly - with an idol without too much drama.

You managed to do all those things without pulling a gun or someone. Some - including yourself - would say that this is the closest thing to you not resorting to that one-size-fits-all solution for a span of time longer than ten minutes.

And it was going all so well, too. You'd very nearly gone a day being...responsible. Being diplomatic. You were beginning to think that this Warmaster thing wouldn't be so bad.

Now this. While having a drink with one of your subordinates, you received a strange package out of nowhere. A box, all taped up nice and tight, with your name written on it. Generally cautious with this sort of thing, you opened it while stopping time in its tracks - Pinky looking over your shoulder as you did, being the same insane eldritchian nightmare she usually is.

And surprising no one, it's a head. A severed human head of a girl, mutilated beyond recognition. Five words painfully familiar to you carved crudely into its forehead. Eyes torn out, revealing hollow pockets of blood and gouged flesh. A challenge, maybe? A warning? Or just someone fucking with you?

[1/2]
>>
Shoot him. In the face.

Then apologise, but only sullenly.
>>
>>25152887

Never mind that whoever sent you this package made the girl look like Tomoe Mami before sending it to you - dyeing her hair the same shade of blonde, teasing it into the same curls. Even having her wear a copy of the flower brooch Mami always wore. No, you're not even upset about that, now that you've confirmed that Mami was still safe and sound (she was having tea with Sayaka at the time).

What's upset you is that the person who did this - whoever it is - knew enough about you to do something like this. Worse still, the words that they'd carved into the poor girl's face meant that they were familiar with the Golden Weapons. With what's happening to you. And everyone who knew about that was either a close personal acquaintance, freezing in Siberia, or dead.

...You've never wanted to shoot someone in the face as badly as you wanted to now.

You'd stuffed the box - head and everything - into your inventory, just after promising Pinky to bring her some of Mami's pancakes next time you made the natural progression of time your bitch. She merely pouted at this, before grumbling about how she'll be waiting - and then faded into nothing as you turned away. Still in frozen time, you ran out of the bar, looking for anyone who resembled the courier earlier. ...No dice, not even after you've ran a couple of blocks. You even checked the cars, to see if they'd snuck into one. Your Shield was clicking frantically, nearly red-hot by the time you'd finished. There was no trace of him - as if he'd disappeared.

You disengaged your Shield and walked back to the bar, your mood black as you met a nonplussed Charles and a baffled Kumatora in the middle of her second glass of strawberry milk. She'd asked where you went, or what was in the package you'd been holding earlier - you merely shook your head and asked her to finish her drink, as you needed to get to the Officio right away.

[2/3]
>>
>>25152895

She didn't ask about the bloodstains on your skirt, although you saw her eyes flicking down towards it. Smart girl.

The drive was quick, and you rushed past stuttering Magical Girls and kowtowing employees to get to Kyuubey's office. The Incubator was in the middle of signing a heap of paperwork when you burst in. That was when you dropped the box on his table.

Which brings you back to now.

"...I'll try to look past the fact that I'll be conducting some takeover negotiations with bloodstained paperwork and ask you, Matsuda, if you've any idea what this is about." Kyuubey looks down into the box again, one appendage reaching forward and carefully nudging the head to reveal its grisly message. "I have my own suspicions, of course, but I'd like it if my Warmaster offered her own opinion. Show some proactivity for once."

How do you respond?
>>
>>25152905

State the obvious. That someone with olden weapons has just openly declared a hit on Mami.

THEN back it up with the warning we recieved from pinky.

>>
>>25152905
I have heard rumors that a certain Prophet might be after our blonde haired angel. Who he/she/it is I do not know, but would like to. After all, a tombstone needs a name, it's only proper.

Wat do QB?
>>
>>25152905

Don't mention Pinky.

"I've had a very shitty day so don't push me or I'll shoot you." Calm down, deep breath. "Someone's declared a hit on Mami and they knew where I'd be and when I'd be there. I'm not fond of coincidences. Whoever did this KNEW. I need a list of names now before I shove that stupid hat down your throat and go shoot up every courier in the city until I get what I want."
>>
>>25152905
Shoot him in the fucking face and remark that there's nothing to be suspicious about.
SOMEONE, just sent us a goddamn fish in a newspaper.

Continue talking to a corpse

He should be perfectly aware that Mami is the obvious target and that she should be protected at all times until this shit is resolved.

Then reveal Pinky and Prophet stuff.

Wait for new QB
>>
>>25152905
There isn't anyone I can name that isn't already dead
There are a few factions I would guess that might have something to do with this

As nothing solid can be proven though I would suggest assigning Tomoe Mami a guard and possibly relocating her to the officio for the time being, while she is quite skilled we have seen that there are those out there who are extremely dangerous and losing her would be a blow to our officio both in morale and in the void it would leave in our ranks

Also I recommend putting some effort towards discovering who this head is of, who sent it and what they are planning to do other than threaten Mami

As warmaster this is my recommendation, the safety of our operatives is part of my responsibility as their superior
>>
>>25152905
"Point 1: Whoever did this possesses, or is at the very least familiar with, the golden weapons. Because that goddamn phrase.

Point 2: It was deliberately dressed up as Tomoe Mami.

Point 3: It was not delivered in a terribly Conventional manner. Given the freshness of the dead head, whoever did it would have had to have known exactly where I was at any given moment, and had a girl on hand to provide the head.

Point 4: I had been informed, en route from Siberia, with a cryptic warning indicating that someone referred to as "The Prophet" needs to die, or Tomoe Mami will.

My conclusion is as follows: Someone connected to the golden weapons has either put out a hit on, or intends to kill one of the best magical girls in this officio. Furthermore, it is probable that hey are doing it specifically to fuck with us, either to draw me out, lure me into a trap, or simply hurt me.

You want proactive? I'm issuing an order to have a team protecting Tomoe Mami at all times. I am also dispatching a team specifically to investigates this. I want a strategy meeting with all senior staff and rank leaders to plan a counterattack to deal with this threat.

Someone just declared war on us, Kyuubey. And I intend to show them what a war really is."

I like how threatening Mami made a bunch of posters want to unleash hell on fucking Pinky, and now Kyuubey even though he hasn't done anything egregious lately.

Heaven forbid we run into Sayaka again today.

But seriously don't shoot Kyubey, it isn't going to help anything.
>>
Let's not shoot Kyuubey.

We're not quite that antagonistic anymore. Plus, he's a pretty decent boss compared to the other Incubators. no need to hack him off.

Do we even HAVE other Callidus? I thought half the appeal in getting Midori was that we didn't have many or possibly any.
>>
>>25153070
>I'm sure we have others.
Maybe. But do we trust them enough to guard our precious Mami?
>>
>>25153090

Mami was going to put Midori on a room at the Callidus floor of the main building. I would think there would be enough to warrant a floor dedicated to housing them.
>>
>>25152905
>"Look, it's obviously related to the golden weaponry, and what do we know about those? That they're bad news for everyone. Now what I'd like you to do is check who the hell this head belongs to and have a mixed squad, Cullexus included, watch over Mami.
>>
>>25152905
First, we're not going to shoot our boss. That'll just delay things and we're no longer a slacker that shoots QB whenever they feel like it.

Then, >>25152993 and telling QB that a "source" has told us that someone named "the Prophet" is targeting Mami.
>>
>>25153108
Oh and I veto/vote against on the whole "Shoot QB" matter
>>
>>25153106
It could be like the situation with the Culexus; we HAD enough Callidus at one point to warrant an entire floor. That number has since been severely reduced.
QB did say that Callidus are now very rare and much in demand for those that still know how to use them.
>>
>>25153090
It would be a piss-poor officio if it didn't have a single Callidus before we 'recruited' Midori. I can't remember exactly how rare they're supposed to be, but that seems excessive - Culexus are supposed to be pretty uncommon too, and there were enough of them to warrant their own dorms before the incident.
>>
>>25153028
I like this. You've got my vote.
>>
>>25153141

>>
Just going to hit 3.5 shadowruns for a minute.

Can unattended magical girl bodies be taken over by soul gems without bodies?

How many soul gems could you stick in a severed head?

Have we checked the head for tampering?

Did we REALLY just bring a package sent by an enemy team into our headquarters without any security checks at all?!
>>
>>25153163
>Did we REALLY just bring a package sent by an enemy team into our headquarters without any security checks at all?!
Yo, we're THE most important and intimidating person around.
Cut the security some slack
>>
>>25153121
Agreed
We're the warmaster now so no shooting the mutant rat, it sets a bad precedent
>>
>>25153154
They still wouldn't need a dorm if there were only a handful of culexus, there are far more cost-effective ways of separately housing that number of people.
>>
>>25153163
Since the Siberian Base had to research an artificial body interface, I don't think so.
The Soulgem is probably tuned to their original body, and so no, they can't just switch bodies.
Otherwise they would have been able to use cryo-preserved corpse.

Unless it was one of a specific Meguca's powers related to their wish, to switch bodies easily.
>>
>>25153108
>Cullexus included
We have one.
She's not on active duty.
Did you mean Calidus?
>>
>>25153163

>>
>>25153177
I don't know.
Imagine the rumours.

>Oh god, heard about Ninth Warmaster?
>The timestopping one?
>Yeah the same. I hear she casually shoots her Incubator in the head, whenever she's upset.
>She can DO that?! No repercussions?
>Horrifying, right?
>>
>>25153028
I second this.

>I want a strategy meeting with all senior staff and rank leaders to plan a counterattack to deal with this threat.

This however would make us look weak. Do we really want the Megucas under us to know how freaked out we are by a simple Threat?
>>
>>25153216
It would ruin QB's image among the other Incubators which would have repercussions with our relations with other Officio's.
The Ninth may have the Magical Girls of two Officio's, but that doesn't mean anything if 3 or more Officio's, or Home Office and the First, decide that we need some corporate restructuring.
>>
>>25153216
I see it going more like
>did you hear about the ninth warmaster?
>you mean that crazy bitch who shooter her incubator?
>that's the one, the boss feels she is dangerously unstable and that the incubator has lost control so we are going to cleanse them
>>
People, people, we're jumping the gun a bit on shooting QB. Wait until he does something to deserve it, like dismissing the threat to our beloved pancake-girl. *Then* we shoot him.
>>
>>25153231
Yo, we're the Warmaster.
We care about people.
>>
>>25153231
It wouldn't make us look weak, it would show that we react to threats seriously

Also if we strike back hard enough and do something along the lines of obliterating all trace of the idiots threatening the one person we really cared about for most of our time in this world we will show that if you fuck with us we will end you, no matter how small the offense
>>
>>25153236
Operation of this scale requires incubator's license.

Them cats don't want to cleanse shit one like the third.
Why would they attack perfectly working and powerful officio like the ninth?
Especially considering the monster in the basement
>>
>>25153028
>I want a strategy meeting with all senior staff and rank leaders to plan a counterattack to deal with this threat.
Overreacting is just as bad as not reacting enough.
If the Prophet knew enough about us to target Mami, then they would know enough that we would have a disproportionate response.
In fact, that's probably what they planned on.

It would show that we're unstable and unable to control ourselves, and that's not something that we can afford when this is just our first day on the job.
>>
>>25153231
>This however would make us look weak. Do we really want the Megucas under us to know how freaked out we are by a simple Threat?

Freaked out? No. Dealing with a high-level threat to our officio by planning, getting opinions of the senior staff, coming up with solid information before counterstriking, and not just flipping out and wanting to murderise thing like Kharn? Hell yes.
>>
>>25153239

Might be a bad precedent. Chiaki literally worships the ground Mami walks on. Were it any other girl the reaction would probably be starkly different.
>>
>>25153265
>Planning and getting advice instead of just flipping out and killing stuff
>Unable to control ourselves

I don't think we're on the same page.
>>
>>25153269
Weeeeeell...

I bet Mami is crazy popular all around officio.
I think the girls would appreciate our action
>>
>>25153269
Pretty much everyone who knows Mami worships the ground she walks on
Our entire officio and the rabbits would go to war on a rumor of a threat to her let alone something like this
>>
There's three reasons as to send something like this;

1: sender is crazy
2: sender wishes to provoke a response
3: sender is using the item as a delivery method for something else

1: we can't do much against.
2: The most likely response we have is keeping mami safe, meaning putting a guard on her. What does that do? Mami doesn't do too many solo missions, so it's not we'll be crippled there. An honour guard takes some resources up so it might be that, but it's not exactly something that will really be a problem.
3: Make sure we check it's not a bomb, JC.

Can we send mami to the moon for a bit? Or is the moon coobie only territory?
>>
>>25153292

>>
>>25153292

Only coobies and the Warmaster of the First.

We can always keep Mami in our apartment. Specifically, the kitchen.
>>
>>25152905

I like this one because it covers the basics, without us seeming either too cold or too flipping-out.

>>25153037
>>
>>25153278
You're still pulling in "all senior staff and rank leaders", even though some of them are undoubtedly on missions right now.
Flipping out and killing stuff isn't the only type of disproportionate response; calling an emergency meeting with all of the senior staff is just as bad.

You have a point. She did say that. Quite likely you're right. It's very likely someone who's familiar with them, or someone who also managed to kill one the bearers and steal their weapon like Kilgore did.
>>
>>25153367
>It could be a trick to divert our attention from something else.
The concert
>>
>>25153367
Like, Ruri and whatever she's cooking up with the concert?
Make us focus so much on Mami and the threat to her, that we don't adequately prepare for what she's going to do?
Or maybe the threat to Mami IS real, not just a decoy, and so she wins either way.
>>
>>25153367
>Didn`t Pinky outright say that none of her chosen would do something so crude?

Except like 3 of them and other Killgore-like cases
>>
>>25153367
She was implying that they wouldn't deliver Mami's head in a box.
I've no doubt there's some that would kill Mami especially since she used to have a gold weapon.
>>
>>25153385
We can pout really cutely at her
>>
>>25153367

It might be someone who has access to files on golden weapon users, or who has personally seen golden weapon users in action enough to know that they're violent and insane and like saying a certain phrase a large number of times.

That could narrow the list down a bit, but it's best to start with the most likely people who would have a grudge against Chiaki enough to send this horrific message.

Oriko would be a suspect. Chiaki killed Kirika in her attempt to save Mami. If she was bitter enough about it, she could have contracted with an incubator to help her get revenge on Chiaki, or otherwise hired another agency to do such a thing.
>>
>>25152993 >>25153028

You gather your thoughts at the same time you take a deep breath. Composing yourself, forcing back the compulsion of pulling steel and pumping a few cathartic rounds into the smug mutant cat. Reasoning to yourself that it would just slow things down; that it would just annoy the both of you; and that it would be a waste of ammunition. You close your eyes, letting your breath out in a sigh, before talking.

You tell him what you know and what you think, point by point. You make sure to emphasize the most important facts, here: that the culprit knows about the Golden Weapons, it knows about your habits, and it know about your connection with Tomoe Mami. The message is there, plain and simple - someone is planning to have the blonde killed. This being anything else - intimidation, psychological warfare, or even a taunt - is much too optimistic to even consider. Someone wants Tomoe Mami dead, pure and simple, and they were willing to get someone innocent dragged into it by using her head as the proverbial brick through the window.

"A serious allegation, but one I can fully understand where it's coming from." Kyuubey muses. "You seem terribly convinced, here, though."

...Who else wouldn't be convinced? Someone just sent you a fucking severed head. There's not much gray area in this one. And since he wants you to be proactive, you'll do so right now, by issuing an order to have a team protecting Tomoe Mami at all times, as well as a team to investigate this thoroughly. You also want to meet - immediately - with all senior staff and rank leaders to plan a counterattack, just in case the worst case scenario happens.

"Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, now." The mutant cat replies gently, before falling into silence, shaking his head, and then continuing. Both appendages carefully placing the lid back on the box.

[1/2]
>>
>>25153415

"I do agree, however - this seems more and more like a declaration. Someone has their sights on Tomoe Mami. Very well, I'll have the rank leaders come up in a little bit. But before that..." Kyuubey looks up at you.

"I'd like you to be more honest with me. You are my warmaster, I am your Incubator. You are my right hand. We must have honesty, Matsuda. We need to understand each other."

...What? What's he being touchy-feely about, now?

"Three times I've felt you thinking about shooting me, Matsuda, in as many minutes the moment you stepped into my office. I knew what you were here for the moment I saw you. No, I wasn't reading your mind - merely skimming the surface, nothing more. You've certainly given me enough evidence to believe you, as well as a solid-sounding theory. But what makes you so sure? What gives you that conviction?"

. . .

"Ever since Tomoe Mami rescued you from that barrier, you've always been a difficult one to deal with. You killed me, twice, before I could even get a word in edgeways. You've been a source of frustration and worry, both to me, Tomoe Mami, and even Sakura Kyoko. Malal had always hid it, but there's little you can hide from an Incubator, even when you wear a Culexus Helmet every waking hour." Kyuubey sighs. "You are Warmaster now, Matsuda, and I'd like to take this opportunity to ask if there is anything you are hiding from me. Convince me that my decision to make you Warmaster is the right one."

It seems that the mutant cat wants you to spill the beans about Pinky.

But Don't tell him. *Show* him.

Pull him into a timestop and introduce, Pinky, AKA Faust.

you guys need to remember, she probably remembers how coobie acts in alternate timelines and we may get killed by faust just because we showed kyuubey to her.

But we promised pancakes.
We should introduce her to the whole gang at once. Sayaka, Kyouko, Mami, Kyuubey. Maybe not Midori cos that might get awkward.
>>
>>25153483
To be honest, I'm not sure we can actually pull other living people into timestop with us.

And even if we did, I'm really not sure it's a good idea to actually introduce Pinky to anyone, even if they're possibly immortal like Kyubey.
>>
>>25153483

We can. It's one of our canon abilities. Also one of the limits on our timestop. Anyone in physical contact with us gets pulled into frozen time.

Yes captcha, we tell no one except the one who licks.
>>

Kyuubey can read our mind, right? Considering he can do that but isn't, when it's potentially dangerous info, that's damn polite.

Shoot him, but respectfully so.

But, no, really, we should tell him about Pinky and how she's fixated on us. Ideally it shouldn't change much, as Pinky is less likely to be releasing so much unfocused destruction if she's focusing on making us all messed up.

Ideally.

But since I am still lacking all the Details to make an accurate guess this is all I will have to say for now. "

Homu. As. Fuck.
>>
Is it really a good idea to have QB physically meet Pinky?
Faust does not have good memories of the Incubators, and she's been deliberately mucking with the work that the Incubators have been doing.
And using Pinky like this, will probably end up with her being annoyed at us even more than before.

>>25153603
QB can read our surface intentions, he can know if we're lying.

[Truth]
"...Let me see if I can sum this up briefly. I'm from another timeline. Something went terribly wrong with an amazingly powerful magical girl, something I don't entirely remember, who is now an insane goddess with the power to re-write reality. Now she haunts me, appearing to me oftentimes when I use my power to stop time, and she's behind the appearance of the golden weapons. But she's mostly just given them out to the violent or deluded, and hasn't usually facilitated their plans or seemingly made any of her own. She seems to have a fixation on me, but also wants me dead, and with her craziness it's hard to get usable information out of her, but in this case I think she may be telling me the truth in that this particular case isn't her doing, Like the Kilgore case, where she didn't anticipate someone else taking the golden weapon and using it for their own ends. But at least if I suspect a golden weapon may be involved, I can sometimes confirm it if she says something that matches up.

So I guess you could say I have a little pink bird on my shoulder, one that may rip out my jugular at any moment."

If you mean when she realized that stopping time when Kyouko grabbed her was useless, I thought that was more because timestopping and having Kyouko frozen around her would still have made it hard to break out of her grasp and been a waste of magic.

And that's terrible. Because it's just like what happened with Mirai and Midori.

But seriously, let's not.

>>25153702

Pinky told us about the Prophet. She said she had a special treat for us, got cheeky, and then we managed to get her to tell. Then we told Wendy later
>>
>>25153702
Pinky told us in our dream on the plane coming back from Siberia
We almost made her forget by mentioning whiskey pancakes and it sidetracked her then she remembered the prophet bit
>>
>>25153712
Then maybe we're jumping the gun a bit on telling Kyubey about our primary source of information, when it was actually a secondary source that gave us the tidbit about the Prophet in the first place.

Also irony in the fact that if Wendy warned us about a prophet in the future, wouldn't that make her a prophet too?
>>
>>25153702
It was, wasn't it?

That being the case, why should we even bother telling QB about Pinky? Seems like a recipe for disaster to me. Somehow I imagine telling QB that we have his #1 most wanted super-witch inside our head would not exactly make him trust us very much, and I rather doubt either QB or Pinky would be terribly happy to see each other if we pulled the timestop trick for introductions.

When Kyoko grabber her earlier, Homura didn't want to pull Kyouko in with her into the frozen time, as it would be a waste of magic if a moving kyoko still have her pinned, and it would have given away her time stopping powers.

>>

>Then maybe we're jumping the gun a bit on telling Kyubey about our primary source of information,
We're not telling Kyubey due to the threat to Mammaries.
We're telling the Incubator the truth about a certain pink haired devil goddess because it asked about them.

>>25153740
It's a lose/possibly lose situation.

Don't tell him? He's not going to trust us as much. Tell him? We don't know, maybe he will be concerned, maybe he won't.

Maybe he has some handy info on what needs to be done.

The way to say this is to say that due to Faust's pre-existence focusing on us she's not going around fucking other stuff up, so it's in the incubators interests not to adjust what they do due to that.

Failure means that we lose something we already had, or don't get something we could have received.

>>
>>25153885

It would have been difficult as hell to get Mirai back to Japan, though. It was shown that Jyubey could possess the soulgems and make them witch out at will; even if she were alive, she'd likely be a prisoner for the rest of her life in a secured cold room in Siberia, or killed because she'd be too much of a liability in a top-secret R&D (and containment) facility.
>>
How much do we actually know about our own past in-character now anyway? Presumably we got some stuff back with the defrag in Siberia, but I get the impression that we're still not quite to 100% yet. Do we even remember our own history with Pinky at this point in the first place?

Regardless, I think a brief, bare-minimum answer is best anyway. If we give full disclosure about Pinky, we risk imminent termination. It's a tossup as to whether QB would see us as an opportunity to learn more about Faust, or a liability who's been compromised and needs to be eliminated. Actually dragging QB into stopped time to MEET Pinky is full pants-on-head retarded. There's absolutely no possible way that can end well.

Keep it short, simple, and cryptic. An Incubator-style answer for the Incubator.
>>
>>25153483

You make your decision, and give the Incubator a slow nod. Reaching over the box with both hands, picking him up off of his seat.

"...Matsuda?" Kyuubey's voice carries with it a note of puzzlement. "What are you--"

You shift him to one arm, just as you take hold of the rim of our shield. Pushing it slowly, carefully, the abused gears grinding and gnashing painfully as you force time to a dead stop. The world, as always, loses color, reduced to a dull cast-iron gray. Silence fills your ears, along with the sound of your own breathing, and your own blood pulsing through your veins.

"What's this?" The Incubator asks again, his voice echoing in your mind. "Matsuda, is this what happens when you stop time? I..." Kyuubey sounds like he's about to say something again, but falls silent. "Fascinating. Quite fascinating. But I don't know what this has to do with--"

The moment you realize something is wrong - terribly wrong - is the moment that the world disappears. Leaving you standing in the middle of a flooded, ruined Mitakihara. Bodies, corpses everywhere, some facedown in the mud and muck, others looking up to the sky, their faces permanently frozen in horror. Not one of them whole - each one torn apart or dismembered to some extent. The smell of rot - of decay - is sickeningly sweet, a scent that grows chokingly stronger when the scream erupts, loud enough to shake the sky.

"WHAT IS THAT THING DOING HERE?! WHY DID YOU BRING HIM HERE, HOMURA-CHAN?!"

You turn to see Pinky - no, Faust - in the form that you encountered in Siberia. A twisted, giant presence, with the stark face of a dying sun, a grin full of too many teeth, and eyes blackened with too many secrets and too many lies. Her claws are no longer playful, pointy tips to her gloved fingers - they are now scythes, each the length of your arm, dripping with blood and gore, gnarled where they sprouted out from arthritic knuckles.

Coobs has been nothing but a responsible, caring boss that cares about the health and happiness of his employees this entire quest. He's not the sociopathic monster from canon. If he was anyone but Kyuubey thus wouldn't even be an issue.
>>
>>25153948

Her back hunched over, vertebrae jutting out from her back, terrible wings of black bone sprouting from her shoulderblades. An angel, imagined by demons who fed on despair.

"WHY. DID. YOU. BRING. HIM. HERE?!" The monstrous beast's roar hits you, a wall of sound, slamming into you and nearly bowling you over. Kyuubey scrambles up your arm and perches tightly on your shoulder - you feel his tiny claws push against your skin, through your clothes. "THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE JUST OUR SPECIAL PLACE!"

Without warning, without preamble - the monster that was once Pinky charges you. Loping at you, its clawed feet tearing through the ground, its scythed fingers slicing air. Its maw blooming open, exposing its forest of ivory teeth, each one stringy with pink saliva.

"I have no idea why you brought me here, Matsuda, but I'd like to get out of here now," Kyuubey says, strangely calm, yet his words are hurried. "If this was your idea of an explanation, then I will consider it. But let us leave before something happens."

Jyubey's power might not actually work unless the soul gem is being possessed currently by the magical girl in question, hence why he didn't do anything until we put Mirai into the fake body. So technically perhaps we could have just taken her soul gem with us to Japan, had Kyubey meet us somewhere and transfer the contract like Midori.

>>
>>25154087

If I remember correctly, there was a quest where the protagonist was a benevolent slave-trader or somesuch. He met his end attempting to chase two bandits, and bad rolls/badly outmatched resulted in his death.

What happened later was an epilogue that showed how the other characters were affected by his death, and what happened to them in the end.

Salve Trader Quest. We weren't that benevolent. Shit, in the same thread people had him kill two innocent kids to eliminate witnesses of the murder we just had commited.

The way he died was absolutely fucking retarded. After going to town with our brother to party and fuck, we wake up naked, hang-over, and see several bandits with really advanced (for that period) fire-arms kidnapping some noble or something who we have absolutely no relation to, who we barely know and doesn't affect us in any way or whatsoever. The bandits tell everyone to keep calm and that they will not hurt anyone unless provoked. What do the players suggest in a situation where the MC has absolutely no power but is not in ANY danger? LOL LETS RUSH THEM LIKE FUCKING IDIOTS DURR HURR

I hope this explains to you what kind of absolutely retarded players /tg/ sometimes has and can affect a quests you've been playing and enjoying for a long time.
Seriously, the authors should take this into account. You don't have the same players playing each time and you must anticipate absolute idiocy and keep in mind the veteran players who might not be on at time to keep it at bay. And when you see the idiocy happening, at least wait much longer till update and keep refreshing while you're writing to see if consensus has changed.

You can derail the quest and make it interesting. Don't make it seem like a duality.

An interesting but retarded write in answer that escalates the situation in an uncontrollable manner can and will derail the quest. As shown here.

As someone who has not or is not going to vote, I find your futile and energy sapping arguments entertaining. Imagine the things you could accomplish if you didn't sit there slinging shit at each other
>>
>>25154336
That still fuels the expectation that no matter how stupid the players get, that they won't die.
And for those players that only "want to see something interesting", they'll still keep on making the same stupid decisions because it makes the story interesting.
>>
>>25154336
Actually, in the Slave Trader quest, the author was lenient. He gave us a choice to sacrifice on of the several close NPC character but the retardness didn't stop there, someone went with "I wanna see what happens when MC dies, lets do that"

Remind you of anything?

Also, you didn't read that quest but it ended with the protag rushing several men armed with semi-automatic guns. What else was the author to do, he even gave us dice roll to beat (75) and chose best of 3.

Personally, I think it's best to avoid killing the protag except in the case of the most absolutely pants-on-head retarded ideas.

Of course, there's also the option of killing off beloved NPCs. Honestly, I think killing off, say, Mami or Midori would be more painful to most players of this quest than a simple game over. Game over is basically "screw you guys, I'm taking my ball and going home". Killing off something really precious both to the protag in-character and the players out-of-character is a whole different level of punishment.

Given it was basically the only reason anyone had for doing the fucking stupidest thing I have seen in a very long time it is why I mentioned it

And it was also doing something that is really quite against the character since we have never taken anything into time stop or even told anyone about the fact we have an insane bitch riding in our powers

Suddenly deciding to show off the freeloader to the incubator like she is a zoo exhibit was retarded on all the levels starting at being literally retarded and going all the way through to being terrible role playing

On the brightside, IF we survive and IF we're still conscious and IF Coobs isn't killed off for good somehow, we can just say "See what I have to put up with on a daily basis?" to Coobs.

>>25155017

the whole bringing QB in to meet the horror was Decu's take on "Tell Him."
>>
>>25154983
I'd say so.
The Katana was being pushed up against a rock and a hard place.
The "Get fucked" was just plain stupid because there was no chance for that to go well, and we ignored Midori's powers of stealth-kills in favor of bravado against a target that doesn't give a shit.

And this situation, we were given "Tell the Truth" vs. "Lie to him" and instead chose "bring him in front of an eldritch monstrosity that hates him"
>>
>>25155017

There are varying degrees of angry.

She's outright pissed that Homura has seen to bring someone else into their special sanctuary. If it was a random passerby, that may have been forgiven. But now this someone who she has been noted to especially hate; thus, the anger factor has increased exponentially.

its because Decu saw an interesting (albeit poorly thought out) write-in and that guaranteed being picked no matter the vote count for the others

it could have been 100 votes against 30 for sensible options and then someone writes something interesting and potentially stupid, people start discussing it without actually voting for it, and Decu takes the discussion as a whole and overrides the votes

you all say how Decu is lenient and shit, he really is not, and he trolled you hard

Shooting Coobie seems like the most reasonable option, if I'm honest. He's seen what we bought him here to see, and I can see that as being the fastest way to get Pinky to stop flipping the fuck out.

When we get back to reality, we can explain why we shot him. He's a practical kind of Coobie, so simply explaining that seeing him get shot had a chance to calm her down should smooth things out.

We might even apologise.
>>
>>25155362
One or two, MAYBE three, legitimate votes for 'bring QB into timestop'.
The rest was
>LOOK AT THIS UPSTANDING SUGGESTION WE SHOULD ALL VOTE FOR IT. WHO IS WITH ME?
>I AM WITH ME I MEAN YOU.
>AS AM I.
>SAME HERE. CONSENSUS!
>>25155391
Pinky is mad because we brought QB in, not because QB is there. Running away will not change the fact that we took QB into timestop.
We need to stay and let her vent. If we don't she'll just vent later when she's had time to plan.
>>
>>25155168
"Look on my works ye faggots, and despair"
>>
>>25155410
I'm not sure if he would revive if we did that. As someone said, I think we're inside Faust's Barrier right now.
I'm not sure how that will affect an Incubator's resurrection process.

Though, shooting him and telling Faust "What, I thought you'd like seeing me put a bullet between an Incubator's eyes" MIGHT work, since if he's the object of her fury, and we shoot him in front of her, she might calm down.

But this is all predicated on us surviving the new few seconds.
>>
>>25155449
Well if that's the case, we've figured out how to kill an incubator for good.

I don't know if this is a good idea, or a bad idea that just sounds good.
>>
>>25155425
yea, all the discussion on that write-in should not could as a legit vote unless it was linked to Decu's post or saying "I'll vote for this too", but it wasn't

I just counted the votes for the Tell VS Show, and while I may have missed 1 or two on either side the results are:

>Tell
14 votes

>Show
7

(didn't bother with the Lie votes, would not have mattered)

So, Decu, kindly answer this:

WHAT THE FUCK MAN?
>>
>>25155468
Not when we, you know, have a use for our coobie.
>>
>>25155468
Not really. We lose QB, we lose the Contractor and all of the powers he has access to.
We can't replenish our numbers, we can't heal major injuries without expending lots of magic, we lose access to the big pool of energy that QB has, and we become open targets for other Officio's.
Most Meguca's would probably jump to any other Officio they can just to have the protection of being part of an Officio, rather than being considered rogue Meguca's.
>>
>>25155449
>>25155476
No... No, I actually think we're on the right track here.

"Shoot Coobie" is actually the most reasonable thing to do right now.
>>
>>25155480
Yeah, I'm getting the same (well I didn't keep count of 'tell' after 12 when it was the clear winner), including one person each switching tell -> show and vise versa. And the majority of 'tell' votes were early on as well (8 votes for tell even before >>25153483 was posted), so they didn't miss the cut or anything.
>>
>>25155480

>>25155503

If QB's perspective chapter is any indication of how Incubator reincarnation works, it would seem that his consciousness jumps into the nearest viable host (in this case, cats). If we're going to shoot him, we need to toss him so he won't be a part of the timestop.

Of course, now everything around Chiaki is witch barrier, so even that's not a sure thing.

Anyways, guys, clearly what we do now is ask Faust to wait a moment because we have something to show her, specifically as to why we brought the Coobie in with us.

Then we shoot the shit out of the boss, and play it off as a present for her, since she probably doesn't get to see the little shits die that often anymore.

The problem is not how long you waited, the problem is that the votes clearly were not in favor of the option you chose to be the "consensus"

If the 'show him' option had legitimately won the vote, we would not be angry with you or this situation, we would deal with it and move on, but it did not win the vote, and you went with it anyways.

Hmmmm. Assuming this would work at all, it might be the best way of calming Faust down... >>25154867 did say "getting rid of the thing that's angering her would probably help", and that's definitely the Stoat of Doom.
>>
>>25155883
But Kyubey might be perma-killed if we kill him in this place.

And given that the other Incubators are worse than him, we're taking a real big chance here.
>>
So, what should Decu do guys? >>25155614 is a must, but should everything be retconned to "tell him" due to the votes, or should we just keep going and try to try to fix this on our own?
>>
>>25155883
Agreed, We should risk telling him the plan through the mind link before shooting him, in case he explains that he'll permadie.

If so, stop him in time and just fire a loada bullets, so Pinky can see him explode into gore once we resume time and the bullets hit him. He's guarenteed to be able to come back from that, since he's done it many times before.
>>
>>25155925
Just for clarification, I'm not saying Decu will do whatever everyone decides, but I'm curious about what everyone else thinks he should do.
>>
>>25155925
I'm in favour of a retcon.
>>
>>25155925
>retconned to "tell him" due to the votes
I think thats the only sensible solution, this thread is archived and can be used as an example of what can go wrong, but the fuckup should not hamper/hinder the quest further

The mistake has been realized and analyzed, solutions have been proposed, all thats left is to retcon it in the next thread and let this be a warning of what not to do
>>
I think a perfectly in-character response to realising just how badly she's fucked up would be for Murderface to just break down and start crying.
I mean, she's had a hard day. She's really stressed out. And now she's fucked up her relationship with the most important person in her life. We haven't really had any despair in a while.

>>
>>25155925
Honestly I think retcon
This was entirely opposite to what the thread wanted so I'd say it warrants it

>>
>>25155925
I think we caught it fast enough to do a retcon; only 1 action has taken place from that decision.

From my experience with PnP games and other quests, if an error on the DM's part is caught fast enough by the players, a retcon is the easier thing to do.
>>
>>25155942
>NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
>WORST THING EVER DO NOT DO
why? lets her some decent reasoning, the kind of emotional yelling your displaying is what got us into this mess in the first place
>>
>>25155925
I say we just keep going, retcons sound great on paper but have a tendency to kill writer motivation when combined with the actual negative reader reactions - a number of quests have had similar fuckups, with the author responding well and amending their mistake only to burn out shortly afterwards. And in this case, we don't even know exactly what will happen.
>>
>>25155941
>>25155950
>>25155953
i gotta agree, we caught it soon enough that it shouldnt fuck things up for the future, use it and learn from it, but do not let it ruin the quest because of it
>>
>>25155958
They are bad if overused
If actually used when there has been a fuck up that was no the players fault it is fine
>>
>>25155958
>we don't even know exactly what will happen.
we shouldnt care about that, if we did know what would happen then that would be an abuse of a retcon, currently though? perfect time to use a retcon, before any major damage can be done and the situation is salvageable
>>
>>25155955
Retcons are an awful writer's crutch. Write yourself into a corner? Retcon out of it! Don't like a character any more? Retcon them to be different! Want to change something in the setting? Retcon!
They are the OPPOSITE of plot progress and character development.
>>
To @UnderscoreFlash regarding
>@magicalgirlnoir you can probably salvage it if you allow the "unstop time" option to work and only disable it on the next major fuck-up.

that would be too late to introduce a retcon and would be abusing the fucntion of a retcon

plus it does not solve the problem in the first place, the wrong option will still have been chosen and we will have these arguments all over again

bring it back to the 'Tell Him' VS 'lie to Him' decision, where the problem began, and you can fix things
>>
>>25155935

Well, if a retcon is done tastefully enough and it turns out to be much narratively better than what occurred, it can be good.

I've been in a quest with a very minor retcon due to the QM not seeing a large majority of votes swinging the other way due to writing. But he left the other scene in just to reinforce how important thinking things through was. Though both decisions didn't impact the story a whole lot in the end and only would have cost a single grunt trooper, resources were scarce and shit was hitting the fan at warp speeds.

Another similar action was done in the Lamia Child quest, in which the retcon was proposed by the QM himself after he thought that the direction it would have taken thing would've been detrimental to the narrative. It was honestly a surprise to all the players who thought it was OK, but agreed to go along with it. The implications from the retcon were much more interesting and opened up a lot of narrative venues.

However, there's also something to be said about letting bad decisions have consequences.
>>
>>25155987
Then what is disregarding the actual choice of the players and running off with something else?

Retcons are a terrible crutch but Deculture hasn't used them as such and I doubt he will start due to this even if he does follow the idea and just pretend this thread didn't happen
>>
>>25155987
But none of those situations applies here.
This is "Do you want to go right or left?"
"Left."
"Okay, you go back the way you came."
"What? No, I said to go left."
>>
>>25155978
Well we already know it's really bad from Exa's answers to the Q&A, so I don't see how this isn't abusing a retcon as well.
>>
>>25156008

>cont

To clarify, both retcons were caught and proposed not 5 minutes after the fact was made.

I agree that massive sweeping retcons on the likes of DC comics or Marvel would indeed be harmful. But this is more of a correction, like correcting a fudged result from a dice roll due to not factoring in modifiers or someone rolling the wrong type of dice.
>>
>>25156008
This isn't even about bad decisions having consequences though
This is about things not going the way that they were actually voted for

If the players had voted for this none of us would be discussing a retcon. But because it did we are
>>
>>25155987
thats why you must not use them as a writers crutch, and in the interactive format of quests, they can solve problems not of the participants cause

I agree that you must not rely on them, and need to be exceedingly careful when using them, but to use that excuse to not fix the problem that was not a result of the audiences actions? then you are not maintaining or improving the standard of the quest

issues that go unsolved like this one kill quests
>>
>>25155932
Yes.

1) Ask Coobie if shooting him will permakill him

If No:

2) Shoot him in the face a bunch of times.
3) Try to play it off like that's the only reason we bought him

If Yes:

2) Cry a lot.
>>
>>25156041

I agree heartily. That was the case in the first situation, and it was agreed to be a fair shake by all.
>>
>but retcons are not always bad
All valid points. Allow me to ask one simple little question:
Which is more interesting; QB being made aware, in a calm and concise explanation, of some of the finer details of Chiaki's relationship with the Blessed Lady; or Chiaki gaining insight into said Lady's behaviour while simultaneously showing QB that EVERYONE IS FUCKED FOREVER THE END.
>>
>>25156074
And I mean interesting in terms of character development.
I need to go to bed now. I've said my piece; I can only hope Decu learns something from this experience beyond 'counting is hard'.
>>
>>25156074
You are missing the point

It does not matter what each path consists of or leads to.

The root issue of this is that the option that was chosen was not the one voted for, and this is a quest run on player participation.

The moment you disregard player participation and start using options that did not legitimately win the vote, you may as well be writing a fucking novel.
>>
>>25156074
Two things

1 not everyone shares your definition of interesting

2 the reason for this even being discussed is because it was a fault in the counting not in the players choice

So first off a retcon is suggested because we did not vote for this course of action
It was a miscounted by Deculture which lead to this entire situation

And secondly we need to get a better system for voting whether it is only counting a vote with and X, [ ], [X] or some similar symbol that is decided on by Deculture so that we all know which are votes and which aren't
>>
>>25156074
I cannot answer that question in any unbiased fashion because you are considering the consequences of the choices as parameters for using a retcon, and not the mechanical underlying reason a retcon is needed.

>I need to go to bed now.
So too shall I, let everyone learn from this.
>>
>>25156098
But while it was a mistake, this path seems more interesting.

If Decu had intentionally ignored the choice, I'd be mad. But he didn't, this was an accident that happened to produce something more tense and exciting than a conversation in the office.
>>
>>25156008
>Though both decisions didn't impact the story a whole lot in the end and only would have cost a single grunt trooper, resources were scarce and shit was hitting the fan at warp speeds.

>And secondly we need to get a better system for voting whether it is only counting a vote with and X, [ ], [X] or some similar symbol that is decided on by Deculture so that we all know which are votes and which aren't

This this this this

We need a definitive means to define what counts as a vote, and a system for counting the votes.
>>
>>25156126
>this path seems more interesting.
you are still missing the point
>>
>>25156126
Being more interesting does not mean it should just be taken

That would be like deciding to nuke a country instead of sending a peace treaty because you pressed the wrong button then decided to stick with it because "hey it's more interesting"

The effect if nothing is seen to be done about this issue could be just as bad for the quest and I don't think anyone wants this ride to end

This.

Sure, Decu made a mistake, and it led to a choice we didn't actually make. But barring this turning into a "FUCK YOU DEAD NIGGA!" situation, it's not like this is the end of the world for everyone ever. Yeah, it's a bad situation, but given that it wasn't intentional on our part, I'm willing to put my trust in Deculture that he'll take that into account and be a little lenient about letting us not die horribly in the next thread.

Of course, retcon to the choice we did make is always an option, but so long as we're shielded somewhat from this being a Dead End choice, I'm willing to at least see where it goes.
>>
>>25156126
Look, I voted for 'tell him' and once we were in i voted for 'stay', but once I actually went back and counted the votes? I could not care less what happened, it should not have happened.

To allow the events of what happened after the mistake to cloud your judgement of the arguments for and against using a retcon is the easiest way to use a retcon badly and not solve the original problem, infact you would cause more in the long term.
>>
>>25156098
And if the story written so far can be changed on a whim, you may as well not be writing at all.
>>25156136
I think all we need is 'make it clear what you're voting for, nerds' and everything will be fine.
>>25156141
And you're missing his; this is, essentially, a work of fiction for which we have input. While it's fair that many of us are trying to 'win', what is 'winning' in terms of creating and/or reading fiction? I define it as 'it was enjoyable to write/read'.

All said, this is my personal opinion. I don't like retcons. I don't think Decu should use one. I won't be emotionally destroyed if he does.
>>
>>25156172
Ah, just to clarify, I'm not trying to say I'm against retconning here. Just that whichever way it goes, I'm willing to see what happens. If we retcon, we retcon and we'll go from there. If not, one mistake doesn't mean the end of the quest, at least in my view.
>>
>>25156173
And given the overall reaction to this thread, not retconning or providing a damn good result to this would be very bad because so many people were pissed at their decision being ignored
>>
>>25156198
The problem as you said this is interactive fiction
Going against the actual consensus and you might as well toss the fucking interactive right out and just write a novel

This is the sort of thing that will kill a quest because when people feel their votes don't count towards anything they won't turn up, they lost interest becaus it is no longer their story it is just the OPs
>>
>>25156172
>I'm willing to put my trust in Deculture that he'll take that into account and be a little lenient about letting us not die horribly in the next thread.

So am I, and as long as the mistake is realised, effort is spent making sure it does not happen again, and the quest or its participants do not suffer a lose of expected quality, I can live with and enjoy whatever Decu decides works best.
>>
>>25156198
>>25156212
>>25156214

I trust that Decu will make a fair ruling in this. I'm leaning towards the retcon path, but given the circumstances, I'm sure that we'll be given a fair shake even if Decu doesn't go forward with that course of action.

Although I think that implementing a counting system or a vote time limit of sorts would help.

Decu's pretty much going to deal with this crapfest in the morning. He sounded like he was really upset by the whole thing and some of y'all need to chill the fuck out, honestly. I DID pass on the actually constructive ideas here - marking votes more clearly and maybe marking the ends of voting periods - and past that we'll have to see how he feels about a retcon in the morning.

Honestly, if people could be a little more polite about this instead of screaming 'DECU FUCKED UP BAD DM' we could all get through this a lot more cleanly. And I'm not just saying we should suck it up and take the bad call either, but come on guys. Jesus. You don't scream at your DM for fucking up, either.

Thanks to the people that have been civil about the whole thing, though, too.
>>
>>25156198
>a work of fiction for which we have input
Yes, and our input was ignored, not because of QM fiat or because of being outvoted, but because of a counting mistake.

This is just as much about having proper representation of player participation by taking the retcon than it is about winning.
>>
>>25156074
Not sure what answer you're expecting but I'd like the MC not to be such an imbecile as to drag QB to timestop
>>
>>25156239
Well said, and we've enough 'polite discourse' on possible solutions/fixes that Decu can relax on the whole "THE SKY IS ON FIRE" business.

Everyone should take a deep breath, get a drink and come back to the next thread with an open mind and a cool head.
>>
>>25156239
Man, reading his twitter, I feel really bad that this has gone from a genuine mistake in counting to people getting outright angry at Decu. I mean, sure, he made a mistake; we all fuck up at times. That's no reason to flip our shit on him for mathing bad once in like, about a hundred fucking threads.

Hell, I for one am impressed he managed to run the quest this long without any prior counting mistakes. So yeah, hope he knows we aren't all screaming about the sky falling, and that he feels more up to looking into this in the morning (by which time the rest of us will have hopefully calmed the fuck down, Jesus Christ people).
