Sorry about being a bit late, but now it's time for VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/jtZ1n4aJ

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You've arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, which you repaired and rechristened the Vergeltung.

After rooting out several Imp spy rings and fighting off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher, you've decided that it's now time to move on to greener (or at least more profitable) pastures. You and the Demons left Albion for the besieged nation of Ustio, with new gear and squad members in tow.

Your first mission went well enough, routing a platoon of Imperial soldiers threatening the city of Valais' supply lines. Then you destroyed an Imperial superheavy artillery battery, taking pressure off the city's beleaguered defenders and giving them a chance to counterattack.

But now, time for some administrative stuff!

MISSION 5 & 6 COMPLETE
REWARD: 5500 CREDITS
UPKEEP: 3720
TOTAL: 1280

TREASURY: 2130

In addition to the shopping options, we need to come up with a name for the Gallian Tank Destroyer!

GEAR:

Gallian-A Rifle - 1000
Modified with a water cooling jacket, the Gallian-A is quite a bit heavier than the standard Gallian-1, but allows for a much faster firing rate.

Gallian-S - 1000
A rifle with an extended barrel, increasing accuracy and range.

Theimer Anti-tank Lance - 1000
A lance specialized to take down armor. Improved accuracy and armor penetration, but incompatible with frag rounds.

Mags M10 - 1000
The addition of a water cooled barrel to this SMG vastly improves fire rate and stopping power.

Flamethrower Attachment - 1000
A portable flamethrower that can be added on to most submachine guns, which can lay down a stream of destructive ragnite flames. Shocktroopers only.

Rifle Grenade Attachment - 1000
A modification for rifles that allows them to fire grenades over much larger distances. Scouts only.

Antipersonnel Mine - 1000
A simple mine that can be planted anywhere to act as a booby trap.

Howitzer Team - UPKEEP: 600
Mercenaries armed with a 105mm howitzer that can provide long range fire support.

R&D

Spiderweave Armor (PROTOTYPE) - 1200
Constructed out artificial fibers several times stronger than steel, this cloth armor provides superior protection to standard Scout armor with no additional weight.

Starlight Scope (PROTOTYPE) - 1000
An experimental scope that can be fitted on any sniper rifle. Has an alternate setting that can be used to improve night vision, though picture quality is still rather poor.

Trauma Plates - 1500
Lightweight ceramic armor that can be added on to existing body armor, increasing protection with minimal change in weight.

>Well, it looks like the consensus is to name the TD "Kilroy" and save up on that hard earned cash.

"Kilroy?" You say, raising your eyebrow. "You want to name your tank Kilroy?"

"I know! I said the same thing!" Julia sighs.

"Hey man, Kilroy was a swell guy. Don't knock on him." Headcase says defensively.

Well, it's not like you had any better ideas, and he was its driver anyways. It's just that 'Kilroy' didn't sound very threatening at all.

"I guess we can see how it goes." You concede.

Meanwhile, the motor pool is a storm of activity, as you can see Ustian soldiers and mechanics rushing about every which way. With the artillery pressure relieved, the Ustians finally have the opportunity and morale to begin pushing out of Valais' defensive perimeter. You're pretty sure Freyberg already has a new mission lined up for you.

Then again, you haven't really checked up on Qyburn or the Vergeltung since you landed. It would do some good to see check in on them, at least. Or maybe you could even check in on the squad to see how they're holding up in these mountains.

Crap too late to actually make a vote is there a way to make a purchase before the mission starts?

You know it's never a good thing to go about relying on super weapons, especially in this universe as every losing side had them while the winning sides? None for the most part.

>Crap I forgot my trip.

You decide to go check in on Qyburn. For some reason, every since you came to Ustio, he hasn't been acting quite like himself. He's been much more somber and fatalistic. He often near manic drive to create and innovate seems to be blunted.

Leaving Julia and Headcase to their own devices, you make your way to an old warehouse that Qyburn had appropriated as his new temporary lab.

"Qyburn, are you here?" You ask, peering inside.

"Oh yes, I'm here." Qyburn says, slowly walking into view, rather than his usual hyperactive waddle.

In the back of the warehouse, you can see a rather large and ominous contraption, covered by a massive tarp. No doubt that strange secret project he had been working on this whole time.

on the bright side there'll be a translation patch in the future, but yeah SEGA being a bunch of dead hedgehog beating bastards. (though that's said to be at the root of things, Sega of Japan dicking over its US branch over how the MD/Genesis did in the west than in japan)

There was an update a couple days back.

But yeah if Sega went and released VC3, it'd have sold as at this point A) more people had PSPs and B) Kurt wasn't a "dumber than Cirno" moron like Avan was.

It reminds me of Nintendo and what happened with Shadow Dragon. (bad news: no new mystery for the west, great news down the line: But you are getting Awakening)

"Qyburn? What's wrong? You don't seem to be acting like yourself." You ask, concerned.

"Oh, so you've noticed, then." Qyburn sighs, taking a seat and motioning for you to sit down as well. "It's quite a long story, you see."

"Well, I got time." You assure him.

"You see, Ustio is my home country."

"Oh... OH." You nod.

"So you understand my anxiety. I thought I could leave my past behind me but... well, as the saying goes, it always has a way of catching up to you."

"This isn't just because your home is being attacked, is it?" You narrow your eyes. "There's something else to it.

"Correct." Qyburn sighs. "A long time ago... probably before you were even alive, I was a much more talented and prolific inventor than you see today."

You frown. Is that even possible?

"But back then, my work was usually for peaceful applications. Better equipment and farming methods for the mountainous terrain, irrigation systems, more efficient pumps, that sort of thing. But then EWI started, and soon the Empire was on our doorstep."

"Just like everywhere else."

"You don't understand." Qyburn shakes his head. "When the Imperials came, I turned my creative efforts to devising weapons that could protect our town. It worked for a time, but, to my horror, the Imperials began copying my designs. They weren't quite as good, but they had a grasp of my basic ideas. It was... horrible, to say the least."

"It's not your fault, Qyburn." You say.

"Oh, but it was." He sighs. "Afterwards, I buried my notes, destroyed my inventions, and left. If was to make weapons of destruction, I would make them somewhere where my people wouldn't be hurt by them."

"So what brought you back, than?" You ask suspiciously. "You seemed enthusiastic about making me come here.

"One of my mistakes. I said I buried my research, not destroy like I should have. Up in those mountains are plans and details for weapons more terrible than anything you can imagine."

"Qyburn, you don't have to tell me what you've made, but how serious is this? What level of destruction are talking about, here?" You ask, wondering just what sort of dark contraptions this (relatively) harmless old man could have come up with.

"Weapons capable of ENDING nations if used right." Qyburn shudders. "Gas that necrotizes flesh on contact, shrapnel that causes wounds that are impossible to heal without ragnaid, incendiary devices that never stop burning, razor wire that constricts and wraps around you the moment you contact it... that's only a small fraction of what I've buried."

You're not even sure if what Qyburn was saying was true or just the ramblings of a mad, tortured genius. There was no way that sort of stuff was possible.

"Ah, but it is possible, partly thanks to me." Qyburn says, as if reading your mind. "These weapons weren't just meant to kill the enemy but to make them suffer, to sap their morale. In hopes that they would lose the will to fight."

"But it backfired because it made them want what you had even more." You conclude.

"Yes, unfortunately."

"Qyburn. I won't ask what else you've cooked up, because frankly I don't care. What I DO care about is that it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Tell me where those notes are, and I'll destroy them for you."

"You'd really do that?" Qyburn blinks in surprise.

"Qyburn, your inventions have done nothing but good for the Demons. We wouldn't even be here without you." You say. "Hell, you're pretty much an honorary Demon yourself. If you got a problem, we'll take care of it together."

Qyburn nods and stays silent for a few seconds before bursting into laughter.

"Oh, Captain, you are always full of surprises!" He then leans closer to you and whispers in your ear, as if he's afraid somebody is eavesdropping on him. "You must find the village of Somtaw. It's an old Darcsen enclave, about fifty miles northeast of here. Hopefully the Imperials haven't found it yet."

In Modern Warfare 2, there's a (rather infamous) level where you've been put in deep cover in a Russian ultranationalist's organization. The leader of said organization is a well-known international terrorist. You see his face in several newspapers during the loading screen briefing thingy, meaning they know what his face looks like. He proceeds to shoot up a crowded airport, making no attempt to conceal his face or dispose of the security cameras or their recordings. And yet somehow, the Russians are too fucking stupid to realize who did it, and jump on the corpse of the deep cover CIA opeartive (the player) that was shot and left at the scene.

"Um, thanks?" You grin awkwardly before frowning. "Wait, you never told me where exactly you buried it."

"The one place that remained untouched from that wretched time. You'll know it when you see it."

"Okay..." You say, a bit uncertain.

After leaving the warehouse, you decide to go meet with Freyberg to see if he has any assignments for you. By this point, you already know the way to his headquarters, and with the constant artillery shelling now a thing of the past, you make good time getting there since you don't have to worry about dashing from cover to cover.

Freyberg's war room is now a flurry of activity. Now that the Ustians are on the offense, more work has to be done. Assault units have to be formed, supply lines set up, chains of command established, it's a mess. And poor Freyberg, who was previously just a garrison commander waiting for retirement, finds himself at the forefront as the ad hoc supreme commander of an entire counteroffensive. From the pained look on his face as he tries to keep track of the endless paperwork, you feel nothing but pity for him.

"Oh, OH! Captain Jager!" He gets up from his desk, happy he finally has something to distract him from the oppressive piles of paperwork. "What brings you here?"

"I'm feeling a bit antsy. You got any missions you can give us?" You say as nonchalantly as you can.

"As a matter of fact, I do!" Freyberg turns around and digs through several piles of paperwork before he finally pulls out two particular folders, both labeled EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS.

"Well, one assignment involves an assault on a fortified position." Freyberg opens the first folder. "We've managed to push the Imperials farther from Valais, but a number of them have holed up inside an old silver mine. Normally, we would just dynamite the entrances shut and starve them out, but our intelligence suggests they have hostages. We'll need a crack team to infiltrate the mines and rescue the hostages before we can organize a proper assault."

"The second mission," he continues, "involves keeping our supply lines clear. The mountains are full of partisans and armed guerrillas. While most of them have sided with us, there remain a few that are still hostile to both sides. One of these groups has been raiding supply convoys. I need somebody to go out there. I don't care if they're stopped through negotiation or annihilation, but I need my supply lines clear!"

"We'll hunt down the partisans." You say, taking the second folder.

"If that's what you wish." Freyberg nods.

"Do you have any intel on who or what the partisans are?" You ask, flipping through the papers.

"Absolutely nothing. All we know is that they're most likely Ustian citizens. Not very well trained or armed, but very determined. Plus, I'm afraid of sending me men after them. I doubt they have the stomach to hunt down their own countrymen, especially since these particular partisans try to minimize casualties for both sides."

"I can see why that mission would be unpopular." You nod. However, you weren't Ustians and you were damn well determined AND trained to boot. "Any time limit?"

"Just get it done as soon as humanly possible." Freyberg sighs. "We can't push out the Imperials if we can't even protect our rear echelons properly."

"We'll move out as soon as I take care of some business." You assure Freyberg. "If you'll excuse me, sir."

"Good luck, Captain!" Freyberg says before turning back to his desk and grimacing. You can see that he almost wishes that he can go with you. Almost.

On the way back to the barracks, you make a stop at Qyburn's workshop and ask him to distribute the trauma plates he had been working on to the squad. It would be a bit of a lie to say that seeing Tarin and Isolde nearly getting gunned down in the last mission didn't motivate you into thinking a bit more about personal safety.

Qyburn is more than happy to find something to occupy his time and quickly sets about to fabricating the plates, saying they'll be ready by the time you go to battle.

Satisfied, you decide to check in on Tarin and Isolde, who are still confined to the infirmary due to their injuries. To your relief, they look perfectly, if not very bored.

"I just want to get back in the fight." Tarin says, working her previously injured soldier. "Like I said, this isn't the first time I've been shot."

You're quite amused to see both hardened soldiers turn away as their stoicism cracks ever so slightly, trying to hide their appreciative grins.

"Anyways, we're moving out for a new mission. I need you to get ready to move out within the hour." You say.

"Yes sir!"

As you exit the infirmary, you consider getting revenge on them by leaving flower themed Get Well cards. Maybe even get the rest of the squad in on it just for kicks. But alas, that would have to wait until a later date.

As your squad slowly putts their way up the mountain road to your assigned mission area, you remain troubled about what Qyburn had told you. You considered telling your squad about his dark secret, but something in your mind prevented you from doing that, reminding you that Qyburn only told you that story in confidence, meaning he wanted you and only you to know about it.

However, keeping the secret to yourself alone is almost maddening. Fortunately, you have somebody in the squad you can trust.

"Sam, I need to talk to you about something." You say quietly to her.

"What is it, Cap?" Sam says, still in a cheerful mood.

It doesn't stay that way after you tell her Qyburn's story and about Somtaw.

"That's some really heavy shit, Cap." Sam frowns. "Are you sure you don't want to tell anybody else?"

"They don't need to know, Sam. Not right now." You say. "I'll tell them everything once that research is a pile of ash."

"Alright, if you say so, Cap." Sam fidgets nervously. "I REALLY wish you didn't tell me all that, though."

"Same here, Sam." You sigh. "But it's the least we can do for Qyburn."

"So how do you want to handle this?" Sam asks. "Do we do the mission first, Somtaw first, or both at once?"

"We'll go to Somtaw first." You say grimly. "Once we take care of that we can spend as long as want hunting down those partisans."

"Good point." Sam nods. "How are we going to convince the squad to go to Somtaw."

"Because I tell them to. It's not like they know where the mission area is."

"True."

Looking at the map, you manage to find Somtaw and are glad that it's not too far from your current position. You relay the coordinates to Julia and Headcase and they shift position accordingly.

It takes almost two hours to negotiate the mountain roads to reach the outskirts of Somtaw. You're not sure what to expect when you see the village, but you're pretty sure you won't like what you see and you're completely right.

"What the..." Sam says.

Julia and Headcase slam the brakes on their vehicles.

"I don't like the waves here, man. I don't like them at all!"

"What the hell is this place?" Heloise gasps, looking like she's trying not to vomit. Brillant and Alek to be similarly uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, Tarin, Isolde, Ramirez, Julia, and Ramirez look at the scene grimly. They're all experienced enough to know what they're seeing.

Below, Somtaw looks as if it was dropped into the middle of EWI and never left. Despite it being the middle of the afternoon, the entire area looks dark and gloomy. The buildings are in shambles as if they've never been repaired, but the most jarring thing is that there's absolutely nothing alive. No animals, no trees, not even a single blade of grass.

The entire town was Death made manifest.

"Qyburn what the hell did you do..." You mutter to yourself.

"C-cap?" Sam looks to you for an order, her fear clear on her face. You have to remember that even though she fought in the invasion, it had never gotten as bad as EWI was. Fighting in Gallia was sunshine and rainbows compared to what you were seeing here.

Elizabeth accidentally said "Hello" to the Imperial command, didn't she?
>>
>>25169531
You get nothing but static.

"Town's dead, sir, nothing at all." Elizabeth announces.

"Right..." You mutter. But if the town was dead, why do you feel like you're being watched? The fact that shadows loom over every square inch of this place isn't helping at all.

So now the question is, how do you go about trying to find the place Qyburn was talking about?

>Let's split up, gang!
>Stick together.
>>
>>25169596
We are NOT going to scooby doo this shit.
>>
>>25169596
>Stick together

We aren't so dumb to split the party.
>>
>>25169596
>Let's split up, gang!
Fan out and comb the town in groups of two also make it a point to not stray to far from each other.
>>
>>25169596
>Let's split up, gang!
We'll cover more ground faster plus if we walk into an ambush we'll have guys in the town who can move to assist.
>>
>>25169596
>Let's split up, gang!
Two man teams, don't lose sight of each other and adjacent teams, find the untouched place.
This is going to backfire badly.
>>
>>25169596
>>Let's stick together by splitting up, gang!

Treat this as an Emergency Rescue Search Team.

All teams stay in constant contact with each other, be it visual or auditory.

Clear triage marks.

The squad spreads out into a small sector, clears that sector, then moves.

Also, two ducets say that it's buried in the graveyard.
>>
>Stick together
Separating would allow people to get picked off faster if there is someone hiding.

"Everybody stick close together. I don't want any of us wandering off and getting lost in this place." You warn. "You seen anything even remotely out of the ordinary you report it immediately, you got that?"

You get hushed affirmation from your squad.

You spend the next hour combing every street and every building you come across. Every time expecting to be ambushed by something out of the shadows. However, fate is too cruel to grant you something so obvious. Again and again, you run into nothing.

Yet something is out there, You can all feel it.

>Damn, you guys just got totally saved.

Suddenly, Tarin whips to the right, rifle raised at a broken store window. Everybody follows suit on instinct, bringing their weapons to bear as well, though to your relief, in different directions in case it was a distraction.

"Whoever is in there, come out. Slowly." Tarin says. If she's scared or anxious, she's doing a very good job of hiding it.

A pair of hands pop out from behind the window, followed by a head, or at least what looks like one. Instead of a face, you're greeted with a rather alien looking mask. The figure stands up fully, masked and covered in a tattered hooded poncho.

Well, at least it LOOKED human, which was a slight relief.

"You. Identify yourself."

The masked figure cocks its head at you before taking out a notebook and scribbling frantically in it.

"Hey! HEY! What are you doing?!" Ramirez shouts, stepping forward.

"Wait." You say. It looks like the stranger is writing something. It approaches you cautiously, tears a page out of the notebook, and hands it to you. You look down to read the note.

NO TIME

THEY ARE COMING

RUN
