Lemme tell you about the ocean man.

Fuck the ocean.

There's no place in the world more imicable to human life. If you want to live in the ocean you have to bring your environment with you.

The reason why is because the ocean fucking hates you and tries everything to kill you.

Fall off your ship, I give you a half-hour before you freeze to death, drown, are eaten by sharks, raped by dolphins, or any combination of the above.

The weather comes in two varieties, cold and shitty, or hot and shitty. Don't think having a more stable ship will help you, that just pisses the ocean off more and makes the weather worse. God save you if you have motion sickness.

I don't know what the fuck the ocean is made out of, salt and some other shit, the oceanographers tell me. Fuck them, the fucking ocean hippies, and their damn rapey whales. I've seen people get pulled out of the ocean dissolved by that crap after they died and fall in piles of goop and clothes that smell like rotten fish and sea-gull shit.

If I ever wanted to kill anyone I hated I'd dump them in the ocean when the sea snakes are spawning. At least, I would if their screaming wouldn't make every ship and aircraft in 20 nautical miles find them.

I don't know what all I'm saying but what I really mean to say is:

Fuck the Ocean because the Ocean fucking Hates you.
>>

The thing I hate most about the ocean is how unbelievably, naturally, terrifyingly BIG it is. ANYTHING could live in that space. I know there are limits on how big something can get because it would need a ridicules amount of energy to operate, but god DAMN, it's like the ocean is just waiting for someone to go down deep enough to release the fucking Kraken.

This is a coconut crab. It lives on many islands in the southwest Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is not only the largest extant land arthropod on Earth (weighing in at up to 4.1 kg), but it might be the largest an arthropod could theoretically grow in our current atmosphere. It can get as large as a dog (1m long, counting the legs, and 20cm wide) and support over 10kg of weight.

It can't swim. In fact, it takes its name from the fact that it travels by sea by floating on coconuts. If it is knocked off, it will drown in a couple of minutes.

Ocean to the rescue.

>>25271719
What's that? Wikipedia implies that giant isopods only eat very slow moving prey. Mostly corpses, the slowest moving prey of them all. Also, the adjective giant seems to me to imply they are bigger than the average fish's jaw.

No, it's totally real. That's a lion's mane jellyfish. Biggest jelly in the world.

>>25271778

I was being facetious. Mind you as far as I know the thing doesn't actually hurt the fish - it replaces the tongue, but the fish can use the parasite as a fully functional new tongue, and the parasite never drains enough blood to harm it. So I guess it's more like... a commensal relationship?
>>
>>25271835

>>25271890

>>
>>25271908
48721spooky.
>>
>>25271802
That's not a giant isopod. It's a parasitic louse called cymothoa exigua or simply a tongue-eating parasite. They're sorta unique. They extract the fish's blood through the claws on its front, causing the tongue to atrophy from lack of blood. The parasite then replaces the fish's tongue by attaching its own body to the muscles of the tongue stub. The fish is able to use the parasite just like a normal tongue. Once it's replaced the tongue, the louse feeds on either the fish's blood or its mucus, depending on the what species the louse is. It is the only known parasite that is known to functionally replace a host's organ.
>>
>>25271934
Or, it could be a giant, invisible space turd.
...
...
Yeah, I like the R'lyeh explanation better.

You see this thing?

This is a Bobbit Worm.

The worst motherfucker that wants to ruin your day for even looking at it.

Hell, you don't even need to fucking look at it. Just being in the general area makes it want to wreck your shit.

These motherfuckers grow up to ten feet long.

Not that you would know. You only ever see it for a brief second as it sticks its head out of the sand, with a pair of jaws big enough to make you never look at a pair of scissors the same way again.

And it's terrifying maw isn't even the worst part about it. It's covered in bristles that cause permanent nerve damage. PERMANENT nerve damage. That means if it so much as stings you once you'll get permanently paralyzed there for the rest of your life.

These monsters hunt by sitting in a hole waiting for anything stupid enough to wander nearby. Then they grab it in those gigantic pincers. And what do they do? Drag it down? No, they fucking SLAM whatever they caught so hard that they rip it down under the sand with them.

Thinking they aren't scary yet? They only ever show you their head. Not so tough right? Just cut the head off, right? WRONG, THEY WILL JUST GROW IT BACK MOTHERFUCKER.

Fuck the ocean.

No, the biggest things on the planet are Mammals.

And they have baleen, not teeth. It takes energy to be enormous, and even more energy to be a predator. The only they they could eat would be whales.

Quite so, but think about this.

>massive creature
>cold blooded
>lives in the abyssal
>extremly slow metabolism
>evolved to detect, or possibly lure large cetaceans from mile away.
>using a minimal of energy, slowly float to shallow water.
>quick burst of energy to snag a tasty sperm whale, or blue whale and gobble it down in 1-2 bites
>gently drifts back down to the bottom, bringing any uneaten pieces with it.

tl;dr yes, massive predators require massive amounts of energy, but what if they're not active most of the time. Hibernating, so to speak.

I've got an ocean story for you guys

Here's some minor backstory; I'm a good ol' Florida boy, I've lived near our beaches for most of my life and I love every part of them. That being said, I've learned to respect the ocean over the years thanks to it sending "reminders" to me that things live in it. Scary things.

About a year ago I was fishing off of the coast in Tampa Bay. Great place, excellent for catching huge fish like Tarpon. After a long day of fishing without catching anything I decided to take a break with my family and hit one of the beaches around the coast. At this particular beach the tide was out really bad and there was a sandbar about 20 feet off of the shore where a bunch of people had parked their boats and were dancing in the ankle high water. Me, my mother, and my father all decided that we would swim out there because hey, party's a party right? As I said before, between us and the sandbar was about 15 to 20 feet of deep water; the kind where if you look at it it's almost black. We swam over there no problem; my mother and father made it there a couple of seconds before me and I was slowly making my way to them when a couple of people who were there kind of stopped and looked at me. At first I thought it was because I was wearing a dorky looking life jacket ( mother knows best, even when I'm 22) but then I saw the fear on their faces and that made me nervous. I got to the sandbar and reunited with my parents without thinking too much about people giving me weird looks. A couple came over to us and asked me " Are you ok?" I was a little bit confused as to why they asked me this and asked them what was wrong with me.

" With you? Nothing at all, but everyone here saw a Hammerhead swim right underneath you, must have been like 10 feet!"

We asked the couple if they could ferry us back to shore on their boat.
>>
>>25273162
Yeah.

Until you pull one that's three feet long out of your lake.

Yeah, a machete to the neck was the most expedient means of ridding myself of THAT unwanted intruder

sea critters are all fine and terrifying, but what really scares me is the thought of something from beyond lying on the ocean floor for eons

Yep. They're in the hills and swamps of southeastern America. There's a show about a guy whose job is to remove them from people's ponds, although he also removes other animals from other places.

Fuck it. Thanks /tg/. Now I want to write a setting about humanity fighting back against giant monstrosities from the deepest pits of the ocean.

Like Pacific Rim. But without the giant robots.
>>
>>25274586

They also hate humanity and its incursions into the aquatic world so much they kill themselves by throwing themselves in front of boats causing massive amounts of damage before they flop onto a beach and rot like a bunch of massive dicks. Because they also have those. Massive dicks.
>>
>>25274339

Don't forget, lobsters don't die of old age. They die from disease or accident. They also continue growing throughout their entire lives. Theoretically a lobster could reach any size, provided it didn't die of accident or ocean AIDS. I like to think that there's a giant lobster, the first lobster, plotting and scheming in the bottom of a deep ocean trench somewhere, and all the lobsters in Gordon Ramsay's spaghetti were scouts who weren't quick enough. It's only a matter of time before they send out the big guns.

epic levels handbook has the paragon template and says it's used for "first" beings, and it also has CR50+ insects that are basically just really big bugs

In the pressures we're used to measuring, yes. Who knows what lurks in the deepest depths?

>>
>>25275003
actually, we aren't even a polyp, our whole population is like the single cell of a specific and very immature polyp that may never survive long enough to bud into a hydra and eventually birth spores

we are truly very small and insignificant things

but hey, there's a long way to go upwards!

>>25273928
Oh, that's a great name.

>find cute girl while fishing
>start getting real close
>think "hey fishing can wait"
>go off some-place private to "hook up"
>get all naked, she goes down on me
>wrapped in ecstasy I close your eyes for only a moment
>when I open then I realize she is not a girl at all but 6ft leopard shark
>"this is for my fallen comrades you bastard" she says moments before devouring my cock
>staggering on to the beach moments latter sobbing, holding my ruined crotch
>Watch people loose their shit when they realize ANY girl at the beach could be a shark
turns out all the girls at the beach were sharks
it was a massacre of cocks
still totally worth it

this barnacle injects itself into its host, replacing the host tissue with its own
>>
>>25275367
hey, polyps don't have any real sensory organs, right? just very basic contact reflexes and maybe eyespots and no higher neurological functions

and then even seastars don't have much in the way of higher order interaction beyond slightly more advanced reflexes and bare minimum visual acuity

if a polyp is a planetary society and a seastar an interplanetary one? what the hell is the galactic equivalent of a fish?

Same here. Nothing quite like scuba-diving, where the new skies are the limit. And seeing sunfall underwater, bootifuls. I mean seriously, so many things down there can kill you but the same's on land!
