Well, we've reached a new stage in terms of side chapters, so get ready for some more VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are MATTHEW WELLINGS, just a regular Gallian kid on his way to school. Well, not just any school, but the prestigious LANSEAL MILITARY ACADEMY. Currently, you are riding a train down to the academy with your father. Mom couldn't come because she was busy with her job, but thankfully Dad managed to find some time in his busy schedule.

Unfortunately, the ride down to the academy is tense. Not only because you have pre-enrollment jitters, but because of brewing rebel activity in the south. Already there's stories of roving bands of GRA soldiers ransacking and looting towns. Your train is frighteningly empty, as well. For every person going to the south, five more are going north in an attempt to escape the fighting.

Looking around, you see a few other people in the train with you. Besides your father, you can see a couple of fellow students, and quite a number of soldiers, no doubt to guard against any possible attacks. There's also the distinct possibility they're part of your father's bodyguard. He is a general now, after all.

The train should reach the station in about half an hour. The question now is what to do to spend the time.

You decide to go talk to some of the students. After all, it'll be a good idea to get to know your potential classmates.

"Hey Dad, I'm just going to take a quick walk." You say, getting out of your seat.

Dad just nods absentmindedly as reads the latest reports of whatever he's in charge with. Typical.

You stand up from your seat and begin to wander to the closest student you see.

The Lannisters are obscenely wealthy. In fact, the kingdom is in debt to them by a good deal at the start of the first book. This is due to the vast amount of gold produced by the Westerlands, which they control. Thus, the oft-repeated jape that Tywin Lannister shits gold. In the end, he does not, as Tyrion can attest.

The first student you see seems pretty laid back. He's wearing a jacket over his regular school uniform, and looks like he's itching for the train ride to end already. You take a deep breath to gather some courage.

"Hey." You just barely manage to say.

"Huh? Oh, hey there." The other student says, now snapped out of his daydream zone.

"I'm Matthew Wellings. I going to Lanseal. You going there, too?" You ask.

"Yeah, I guess." The student shrugs, then reaches out to shake yours. "Luke MacMillan, though you can just call me 'Mac'."

"Nice to meet you, Mac." You say, returning the handshake.

"So where do you come from?" You ask him.

"Ah, up north. Nothing special, really." Mac shrugs. "Lots of marsh and forest, and that's pretty much it. You?"

"Well, I live near Randgriz. Part of my dad's job, after all. He's a colonel -I mean- general in the army now."

"Whoa, dealing with royalty here." Mac whistles. "Should I start calling you Milord or something?"

"Nah, nothing like that." You laugh. "My dad actually worked his way up the ranks. Spent half his life in the service."

"That is some dedication right there." Mac nods sagely. "So why are you headed for Lanseal?"

"Well, uh, to make my family proud, I guess. I'm the first in our family to qualify." You say. "My family's mostly military, so it's a huge deal for us. How about you?"

Mac's eyes glint with a evil light.

"Why, the girls, of course!" He grins."Lanseal's supposed to have a lot of hotties enrolled there. And a lot of them have huge, well, you know..."

Mac makes a gesture over his chest with both his hands, making it plainly obvious what he's talking about.

"I-is that all?" You ask, a bit bewildered.

"Matthew, it's every man's duty to woo the girl with the shortest skirt and the biggest boobs!" Mac says proudly. "That way we can ensure future generations of Gallians will be strong enough to protect this country!"

"Riiiiggght." You nod awkwardly

"Well, I was a pretty good shot on the range, so I think I'm going to be a sniper as well." You say.

"Hey, fellow sniper bro!" Mac high fives you. "Hey, if we ever get in the same class, we totally have to pair up. We'd be the perfect sniper team!"

"Yeah, sure." You grin.

Suddenly, a loud squealing sound as the train hits its brakes signifies that the trip is over. You wait until the train comes to a full stop before saying your goodbyes to Mac and returning to your old seat.

"Hey man, remember, if you need someone to hook you up with the ladies, just find me!" Mac winks.

"Yeah... sure." You say as you return to your seat. Dad has already gotten up.

"This is as far as I go, Matthew. I know you wanted me to accompany you all the way to the academy, but something's come up and I need to return to Randgriz right away." He says.

"So, I guess this is goodbye then?" You ask.

"For now. Just remember what I've taught you. And remember to write me and your sister."

"I know, Dad."

"Good." Dad nods for a second before locking you in a bear hug. "Be safe, Matthew."

"I will, Dad." You say, returning the hug.

You both stay in the embrace for several seconds until both of you realize that Dad's guards are staring at you. He promptly releases you, brushes himself off, and salutes you.

"Oh yes, I almost forgot." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a note. "It's from Samantha. Apparently you are to read it before you reach Lanseal."

You take the note and salute your father.

After the train leaves, you find yourself feeling amazingly lonely. The other students have already left for the academy, leaving you to make the journey up alone as well.

No sooner than the train leaves than you grab the envelope and tear it open. It's rare to get mail from Sam, especially since she's apparently globe trotting with that friend of hers. ("Not my boyfriend!" She'd always yell before punching you in the gut.)

In is all the usual. She misses you and Mom and Dad, and she's having all sorts of adventures, and getting paid for it as well. You're a bit glad that she managed to find a place of her own after leaving the house.

However, at the end of the letter, you see some curious words.

>Oh yeah, and me and Jager and sending over a friend of ours to Lanseal as well! Her name's Artya by the way. Make sure you look out for her! It's the first time she's been to an academy like Lanseal, much less Gallia. You'll be able tell who she is by the mask!

>XOXOXOXO
>Sam

You frown, wondering just what Sam meant, and who exactly this "Artya" girl she was talking about is.

By the time you've finished reading the letter, you've reached the campus proper. It's... an amazing sight, to say the least.

And unfortunately, even though you wanted to get there early, you end up getting lost anyways. Well, this was a GREAT way to start off the day...

You wander the halls aimlessly, not even finding any other students around you can ask for directions. Looking out the window, you can see another student in the courtyard below, his dark red hair contrasting against the white stones.

"HEY!" You yell down. "You have any idea where the Test Room is!??!"

"I HAVE NO IDEA! I'M LOST TOO!" The other student yells back. "GOOD LUCK THOUGH!"

The student below gives you a thumbs up and really stupid looking grin. Well, at least he was friendly enough.

Wandering aimlessly again, you eventually come across some sort of commotion. You see one student being cornered by five others, all female. Curious, you move a little closer to try and overhear their conversation.

Well, you couldn't let this stand. If Dad taught you anything, it was to never let injustice happen on your watch, especially if you had the means and ability to stop it.

"Hey! There you are!" You say, casually sliding through a gap in the wall of bullies, taking the masked girl's hand, and pulling her through. "I've been looking all over for you! We need to get to the testing room right now or we'll be late!"

The masked girl cocks her head curiously, takes one quick look at you and then the bullies, and decides to take her chances with you, allowing you to pull her away from the little clique of mean girls.

"EXCUSE ME." One of the girls, obviously the leader, steps out. "If you must know, this... 'person' is violating one of the school rules. She must be wearing the Lanseal uniform at all times."

You take a look at the masked girl, and you can clearly see that she's wearing the uniform, though it's mostly hidden under the hooded poncho she is also wearing. But it's still there.

"Well, she IS wearing the school uniform, and before you say anything about her mask and poncho, there is no rule against anything worn in ADDITION to the uniform." You say with the utmost confidence. Dad made you read the school rules every night, after all. "Then again, I can't blame you. It must be amazingly hard to see anything in front of you with those twin peaks on your chest."

The words take a while to sink in, but the lead bully's face suddenly turns a crimson red when she realizes what you just implied.

"Y-YOU PERVERT! RUFFIAN! PEASANT!" She yells.

Her wingmates soon begin closing in, with very aggressive looks on their faces. Even though they're girls, they're still Lanseal students, which means they could probably kick your freshman ass in a fight. Plus, even with your "friend", they still outnumber you pretty badly.

"Well..." You say, the adrenaline surging through you blood is making your mind race like lightning. "My most sincerest thanks my lady. I know quite well what I am, but you forgot AWESOME! HEROIC! CLASSY AS HELL! Shall I tell you what you truly are?'"

The girls pause, confused by what you just said. Hell, you're not even sure what you just said. But achieves the current objective of causing them to hesitate, giving you the window you need to FLEE LIKE THE WIND, cackling like a madman, your hand still gripped on the masked girl's. Under your own laughter, you can hear an odd, rasping noise which you assume is her way of laughing as well.

Whether by miracle or pure dumb luck you manage to find the testing room, with time to spare. You and your partner take seats at the very back of the class, in case the bullies managed to follow you. However, those fears prove to be baseless, as they never appear.

"Whoa, that was a close one." You sigh. "Actually, I never caught your name."

The masked girl slips you a note, obviously prewritten.

HELLO MY NAME IS ARTYA. IT IS NICE TO MEET YOU.

"Ah, my name's Matthew Wellings." You say. "My sister Sam sent you here, didn't she?"

Artya nods rapidly and hands you another note.

"So Artya, where are you from? And how did you get into Lanseal?" You ask. You're genuinely curious as to how this masked mystery ended up in one of the most prestigious schools in Gallia.

I COM FROM USTIO. HOME WAS DESTROYED BY IMPERIALS. WAS FIGHTING THEM SINCE VERY YOUNG.

You wince. You know Gallia had it pretty hard during the invasion, but that had barely lasted a year. It sounded like Artya had been fighting all her life, which would explain a lot of things.

"And that mask? Your voice? Were you hurt or something?"

Artya shakes her head.

VOICE BORN LIKE THIS. MASK FOR GOOD LUCK. NEVER DIE WHILE WEARING. PROOF IT WORKS.

"Uh huh..." You frown. You thought Sam's "friends" were quirky from how she wrote about them, but Artya definitely takes the cake.

JAGER STURMFUHRER WAS NICE. CALLED FAVOR FOR ME.

Well, that made sense. Sam's boss was noble born, so he'd have some pull with the school administration.

"So how's Sam been doing?"

Artya pauses for a second before scribbling furiously again.

FIGHTING AND KILLING IMPERIALS. SHE ENJOYS JOB. ENJOYS BEING WITH JAGER. LIKE BROTHER AND SISTER.

The last words stung you a bit. You know Artya didn't mean it, but it reminded you about Tristan's death.

SOMETHING WRONG?

Apparently, your worry showed up on your face.

Artya's comment might be sort of damning if not for the fact she doesn't know of any real bonds beyond that.

But this is food for thought besides the implication of Sam having some sort of brother complex.
>>
>Tell her about Tristan
>>
>>25274000

Let's not make the girl feel like shit, she was just sharing.; Any conversation that ends with talking about ex-relatives is one that should be stymied, at least until we're ready.
>>
>>25274000
You debate on telling her. She was still practically a stranger to you, after all, but she's been honest to you so far so you decide to return the favor.

"Tristan was our brother. The oldest. He died last year trying to defend Gallia against the Imperials. We all took it pretty hard, Sam especially." You say.

Artya stays quiet(?) for a while, before writign up a new note.

LOST PARENTS WHEN YOUNG. UNDERSTAND FEELINGS.

"Thanks. And I'm sorry for your loss." You say.

Artya nods.

However, a commotion draws your attention to the door, where you see Mac sauntering in, a palm shaped injury on his cheek.

"Let me guess. Tall, strawberry blonde, assets that could supply the entire Gallian army twice over?" You ask, an ugly feeling in your stomach.

"Just a guess." You shrug.

And thanks to those grueling study sessions Dad forced you to go through, you pretty much power through the test. While there were a few problems that genuinely stumped you, by and large you are confident you aced it.

You observe your friends. Mac looks like he's having a bit of trouble, but making decent progress. Artya meanwhile pretty much blazed through the test and finished before you did, no doubt due to writing being her primary form of communication.

However, testing regulation meant that even if you finished, you couldn't leave until the test clock expired, so you spend the extra time double checking your answers.

"TIME." The teacher announces. "Put down your pencils and leave your tests where they are. We will now proceed to the physical portion of the test."

As one, the students all file down to the armory to be outfitted. You notice the same red-headed kid from before getting into an argument with a Darcsen, and a shy looking blonde trying to mediate between them. However, you're pushed along before you can see the outcome.

You are then confronted by the very bored looking Armory Clerk, who asks for your size and preferred class. After being changed into your combat uniform, you follow the rest of the class out into the assembly area. A drill sergeant hands you a slip of paper signifying your team number, and you move to your designated rally point.

"Well hey, it's a small world, isn't it?" You're greeted by Mac, who is hefting his own sniper rifle.

<Reinforcements have arrived.> Artya signs as she arrives in Scout gear.

"Two snipers and a scout? Isn't this team a bit... lopsided?" You ask.

"Hey, I have no clue what's going on. Apparently it's up to those paper pushers." Mac shrugs and points to a set of elevated bleachers, where you can obviously see the school faculty, no doubt there to observe the tests.

Yep, Sniper and Spotter. And although both members of a team are fully trained for both roles, they're kitted out differently in the field. Artya would likely be our Flanker, however. Meaning either we or Mac are gonna be Spotter if we team up.

"Team 6 and Team 7 will report to the Pit!" One of the instructors announces. "Sergeant Shepherd will brief you on the testing rules and guidelines!"

"Team 7, that's us." Mac says. "Hey, at least it's a lucky number, eh?"

<Moving out.>

You arrive the entrance to the Pit, the school's live fire practice area. At the entrance, you can see a rather large and intimidating man, with an equally large and intimidating mustache.

"I am Sergeant Shepherd, but as long as we are in the pit, you will refer to me as SIR. Is that clear?"

"Yes sir!" Everybody affirms.

"Good! Here are the ground rules!" Shepherd begins pacing back and forth. "Both of your teams will be pitted against each other. The objective is simple. Either capture the other team's base or eliminate the enemy team! You will be using rubber bullets, but you WILL treat them as LIVE firearms! I do not need to remind you that under the right conditions, rubber bullets can be lethal!"

"Yes sir!"

"Report to your starting positions! When you hear the whistle, the test will begin!"

You manage to get a good look at the opposing team. Unfortunately, it seems to be more balanced than ours, being a scout, shocktrooper, and engineer combo.

"So, any ideas how to do this?" Mac asks.

I guess it would depend on how hot the area is that the team is working in. I can see the Flanker being worthless in area where active fighting isn't really happening. it really depends on the role the sniper team is being used for, if they're supporting a battle, then yeah, the flanker isn't really useful. However Sniper teams also act on their own in enemy territory to harry enemy fortifications and troop build ups, in which case the flanker is super useful.

"Okay, we're going to split up and catch them in a crossfire." You say. You take a quick look at the Pit and see that the entire field is completely symmetrical. On either side of your base are some hills and a sniper tower. While the sniper towers would give you a commanding view, they were extremely obvious and if you got pinned, you wouldn't be able to get out. The hills were much lower, but provide infinitely more cover and concealment.

You and Mac set up in the hills overlooking your base, deciding the towers were too obvious. Fortunately, there's plenty of fresh grass and brush to give you very good concealment. Across the field, you can see Mac through your scope, and he gives you a thumbs up.

"Artya. Try and lure them in. Click twice to signify they're coming. Click three times if they're splitting up or flanking. Got it?"

A click over the radio signifies her affirmation.

Then, on schedule, the whistle blows, signifying the test has begun. Artya surges forward with blinding speed, vaulting and darting around obstacles as if they were nothing.

"Damn, she's fast."

Soon she's out of sight, but you can hear sporadic rifle fire and a few smg bursts, meaning she's made contact with the other team. Seconds later, Artya comes dashing back into view, not having slowed down at all. To slides to take cover behind a sandbag barrier and clicks twice on her radio.

"Mac, get ready for showtime." You announce.

Up ahead, you can see three figures sprinting forward, obviously looking for Artya. However, having lost sight of her, they quickly become more cautious, sticking close together, but still in the open.

"Who do we take out first?" Mac asks.

You score a solid hit on the scout, hitting him in the upper left shoulder and knocking him down. Mac unfortunately misses his shot, giving the shocktrooper the opportunity to dash for cover. Artya tries to single out the engineer and manages to driver her out of position and farther back where she can't support either squadmate.

However, the scout is still active, seeing as how the judges have not declared KIA.

With the scout down, neither the shocktrooper or the engineer have any idea where you are. The shocktrooper pours suppressive fire into the sniper tower above Mac. Shame nobody was in it.

Gauging the situation, you see that the shocktrooper took cover from you, seeing the direction the scout was shot from. However, that leaves him open to a shot by Mac.

That mean the scout wasn't going anywhere for now. Through your scope, you can see the engineer's head poking out cover and pulling back in, as if unsure of whether to go out or not.

Meanwhile, Artya holds position in case either enemy tries to make a flanking maneuver.

Again, in your haste, you and Mac flub your shots. However, Artya has more luck. Breaking cover, she takes her one grenade and lobs it with all her might.

At first it looks like the grenade falls short, but it keeps its momentum and keeps rolling and rolling and rolling...

...until it rests to a stop right under the enemy squad's feet. The grenade explodes, covering the entire enemy squad in bright neon pink paint.

A whistle suddenly blows.

"TEAM 6 IS KIA." Shepherd announces. "TEAM 7 IS THE WINNER."

You and Mac stand up and give a victory whoop before running down your respective hills and linking up with Artya. You all high five each other.

>Anything to say about your victory?

"Artya that was an amazing grenade!" You say as you hug her. Artya seems a bit surprised at this sudden close contact but she eventually returns the hug as well.

I KILLED THEM. DOES THAT MEAN I CAN LOOT THEM?

"Ummm, that's not how the test works..." You laugh as Artya visibly deflates.

"Hey, lovebirds, it looks like we've made an impression!" Mac points up to the observation deck. You can see many of the teachers in heated discussions. No doubt competing over who gets which student.

"Team 7, stand by for class assignment." Shepherd says. "In the meantime change back into your school uniforms and get yourselves cleaned up."

"Hey, Matt." Mac nudges you conspiratorially. "Don't you wonder what Artya looks like under that mask?"

"Well, who doesn't?" You shrug.

"Mac, let me put this in perspective." You sigh. "Artya has pretty much lived her entire life on the run from the Imps, probably has more combat experience than us, just took out an squad singlehandedly, and as a scout, it is her damn job to sniff out ambushes. AND YOU WANT TO TRY AND SNEAK UP ON HER?!??!"

"Hey, man, it was just a suggestion. Sorry if I offended you." Mac says apologetically.

"Don't sweat it. It's... just been a long day."

"I hear ya, man. They weren't kidding when they said Lanseal tests are brutal!"

It takes you about fifteen minutes to change out of your armor and take a quick shower. You then wait outside the girls' changing room for Artya to come out.

"So, which squad do you think we'll get into?" Mac asks.

"I dunno." You shrug. "Hopefully one that's not terrible."

"I hope I get into Class A." Mac says, drooling. "That's Juliana's class. And if the rumors are true, all the Class A girls have Class D+ breasts..."

You then see Artya exit the changing room, freshly changed and cleaned. You wave to her and she waves back.

LONG WAIT?

"No, not really." You shrug.

"Ah, Team 7. There you are!" You see one of the instructors approaching you. "We've finally decided which classes you will be allocated to you."

The instructor hands all three of you a sealed envelope and then leaves to fulfill other duties.

"So, how do we handle this?" You ask.

"How about we just open our envelopes at the same time and put the results down on the table?"

"Sounds good."

Artya nods in agreement.

"Okay." You count. "One...two...THREE!"

All three of you tear your envelopes open and slam your assignment sheets on the table. Surprisingly enough, you all got into the same class. However...

"....Class Z?" You frown, perplexed.
