You are Captain Numeon Smith of the Knights Inductor space marine chapter, and commanding officer of the Aprior sector Joint Task Force, currently on deployment to the frozen ork-infested world of Volkgarod. You have recently succeeded in securing the planetary capitol from the ork invasion force, and are now faced with a choice of how to persecute your campaign against the orkish forces.

You can retake parts of the agricultural belt around the equator to secure food supplies during the eternal winter, or retake several industrial cities to secure munitions for the local forces and begin producing more advanced weapons.

You could choose to engage both sets of targets at once, but this may leave your forces overextended in the global conflict.

Your task force stands as follows.

SpecOps: ASIS task force, Eldar Ranger squad.

Air Support: Valkyrie Avenger dropships, Shrike air-space fighters.

Heavy Armor: Fenris main battle tanks, precision rocket artillery.

Infantry Support: Sisters of Battle, Battlesuit Team.

Special Units: Confessor, Tau Commander.

Old threads here.

Whilst players discuss their next move, I shall be posting some info about the Knights specialized armory, so that you have a better idea of what weapons the JTF itself is deploying on a personal level.
>>
>>25302728
Engage both targets as once, reinforced by the Capitol PDF. Rely on Orbital superiority and the ability of the JTF to rapidly redeploy to make up for the weakness in the capitol defense
>>
>Reasonable
>>
>>25302786

Seconding. Hopefully Orks are not smart enough to coordinate their attacks.

Emperor's providence shall grant us victory - that, and our advanced weaponry.
>>
>>25302786
I think that going after both the Agri-Center and the Industrial Center at the same time would stretch our resources too much.

We need to concentrate on one first, then the other.
>>
>>25302866
That's why we make up the difference with pdf, and footwork
>>
>>25302850
They are not really coordinated enough, but there is a veritable army at each location. The local forces seem to be holding out mostly due to how each city is built like a fortress and vodka fueled rage.
>>
>>25302786
>>25302850
Look, if we go after both at once, then we split our forces. That means sending 2 Squads of Knights with the Sisters and 2 Squads with the Battlesuits, and splitting up the tanks, and expecting them to retake multiple cities.

>>25302871
The PDF is already beaten, battered, doesn't have tanks worth a damn, or even heavy artillery.
They were getting completely fucked until we arrived.
>>
so 2 in favor of splitting up, reinforced by pdf, one opposed.
>>
>>25302888

I suppose you have a point. What about retaking the agricultural zone while only reinforcing the industrial compound enough that it doesn't fall in the meantime?
>>
>>25302933
That's really about what we can do.
Especially if we can use the Shrikes to drop beacons at the rear areas of the Ork encampments to destroy Ork reinforcements so that the pressure on the defenders is lessened, or we redeploy some Guard units via orbital drop into the city centers to provide reinforcements.
>>
>>25302728

First of all, the Aprior pattern lasgun.

In its base functioning, this lasgun is identical to most other lasguns in service throughout the Imperium, it does however incorporate several innovative new features.

Firstly, a modular rail system allows for the addition of many kinds of scopes and under barrel attachments, with a hololithic sight being a common addition.

It also incorporates a power selection feature, allowing the user to vary the output from 'bad sunburn' to 'charred skeleton' as the situation requires.
>>
>>25302956
>>25302933
Have the Tech-Priests, 2 Guard companies, the Rocket Artillery, and a Squad of Knights should be able to use orbital dropships to go up into orbit, then come down from orbit into the industrial cities within human-controlled zones in order to reinforce them and get one or two factories back online. That, plus orbital support to vaporize the rear 1km of Orks should make sure that they don't fall before we get there.

All other forces can be directed toward the agricultural centers.
We will have to take the trains partway there, then dismount before we arrive at the Ork-held train stations, then start hammering at the Orks against the anvil of the local cities.

That's the best compromise I can see between attacking both targets, and not spreading ourselves so thin that we get overwhelmed.
The local PDF are slower, worse-armed, worse-trained, and all around inferior to our Guard.
The slow part is important; we'd be tied to their slow pace and lose much of the vital mobility advantage that we need.
>>
>>25302956

Then let's do that. While having industrial capacity will be crucial for the war effort, I doubt that, contrary to what local authority have told us, the men can keep fighting (and working) on the word of Emperor as their only nourishment.

And I don't think we've enough vodka aboard our ship to keep them from rioting.
>>
>>25303021

The Aprior pattern bolter is functionally similar to most bolters, firing the same type of ammunition as other marine firearms. It also incorporates a rail system like the Aprior lasgun, but the real unique factor is the specialized ammunition this bolter is designed to use.

Bean bag: Nonlethal but painful, these beanbags shock and stun unarmored targets.

Gas grenade: Able to be loaded with any form of aerosol, these grenades are usually loaded with tear gas or knockout gas for crowd control and riot suppression purposes.

Flechette rounds: These bolter shells fire spreads of razor edged darts, converting the long range bolter into an assault shotgun. A nonlethal variant is also available, which fires rubber pellets at much slower velocities.

That covers the basics. Have we agreed on a plan to move forwards?
>>
>>25303081
Proceeding with this plan.

>>25303060
>>
>>25303081
>flechette
Don't most Orks not wear much armor? Would using flechettes be a better choice than regular bolter ammo?
>>
>>25303060

You look up at the other members of the room after a few moments contemplation.

"I shall deploy a strike force via orbital insertion to relieve the defenders of the industrial centers. Simultaneously, a ground offensive will be launched towards the agricultural belt via the rail system. By striking swiftly across the board, we shall return the most important logistical centers to Imperial hands, and be on better footing to continue persecuting this conflict."

The Secretary General frowns. "The first priority must be the industrial centers, without weapons to feed my army no progress can be made."

You fix him with a hard steady gaze. "Your soldiers cannot fight on empty bellies, using this plan we shall secure all positions at once, and keep the orks from overwhelming your forces still fighting in the agricultural belt." You say somewhat sternly.

Anything further to say here?

>>25303136
An issue is range, at close range flescettes shred unarmored targets, but they spread out as they fly. Orks are big and angry enough to not notice or care if a few darts hit them, so at range normal bolts are better.
>>
>>25303198
"Tanks with no fuel are lawn ornaments, guns with no ammunition are just metal clubs, and soldiers with no food cannot assault. And soldiers who are growing hungry will be better motivated to fight if they know that rations are on the way."
>>
>>25303256
that works
>>
>>25303198

"You risk all Captain." growls the Secretary General. "You stretch your forces thin and risk defeat to save a few farmers."

You look the General straight in the eyes, jaw set. "Guns and ammunition do not an army make. Tanks with no fuel are lawn ornaments, guns with no ammunition are just metal clubs, and soldiers with no food cannot assault. And soldiers who are growing hungry will be better motivated to fight if they know that rations are on the way. By striking at both targets we shall ensure that all the necessities of war are in our hands, we cannot afford to wait as our stockpiles dwindle until we are finally overrun."

You hold his gaze for a long while, neither of you blink.

"We're done here." You growl and turn from the room.

Activating your pad, you send a data packet to O'Niell, detailing your strategy, and head back to the HQ. It will be at least a day before your forces are prepared for an offensive of this magnitude, so you have a little time on your hands now that no orks are shooting at you.

Is there anything specific you wish to do before embarking on your next offensive?
>>
>>25303337
Hello?
>>
>>25303337
Also, which attack group do you intend on joining?
>>
>>25303337
Contact the Imperial Outpost to see if their astropath has any better information on the approaching reinforcements.

Also who leads the Outpost? I'd like to get to know them better.

Any Shrike-assisted orbital bombardments on Ork rear-areas with minimal human casualties to bring their numbers down would be good.

Also, I want to know where the locals expect to get fuel and precursor chemicals needed for ammunition. Potassium nitrate and phosphates are organic compounds, needed for explosives and ammunition; are they actually getting them in the barren North? I can see them getting the metals needed for guns and tanks, but not the chemicals needed for bullets and fuel, as well as whatever they're using to power their factories.

A lot of the organic compounds usually come from agricultural areas, another reason to get the farms back.
>>
>>25303443

The ground offensive, of course. I'm assuming the sisters are coming with us, or do you think we should send a squat to the defenders? Somehow I doubt they would need religious morale boosts as long as they have booze, but perhaps I'm mistaken.
>>
>>25303426
>>25303443
Sorry, was researching ammunition.

I'd say go with the defense force going towards the industrial centers.

Cypress and Vael, with help from the ASIS Team and Eldar Rangers, and the Fenris Tanks, should be able to help in the breakout and assault on the Orks in the agricultural center. That's a straightforward attack.

But we should be there for building defenses and getting factories online, and making sure the industrial areas don't fall.
>>
>>25303464
Shrikes are engaging in seek and destroy operations, but limited long range detection hampers effectiveness. When engaging at a city it is more effective, as you know orkish forces are converging there.

Good points. I retract my earlier suggestion that we lead the offensive. I think the guardsman bravado has clouded my judgement.
>>
>>25303523

You decide that it would be best if you became more familiar with the only other outpost of the wider Imperium on Volkgarod, so you make arrangements to meet with the commander of the little garrison.

The structure itself, nestled within the heart of the capitol, is a tiny island of standard Imperial architecture on the backwards world of Volkgarod, and could have been directly lifted from any of a thousand Imperial worlds unnoticed.

The soldiers at the gate are armed with old battered lasguns and flak armor, and seem only slightly less wary and awestruck as you strike through the front gates.

Entering through a set of large double doors bearing the Imperial Aquila, you find yourself in an atrium, devotional images and tapestries adorning the walls, and the double eagle embossed upon the ceiling.

Waiting for you is an older man, a little on the skinny side, wearing what you suspect are his best robes, although they look a little threadbare, and the gold leaf on his collar is a little worn in places.

He clearly has put a lot of effort into this though, and draws himself up, getting through his greeting with a minimum of nervous stuttering.

"In the name of the Emperor, I welcome you to this humble outpost Captain of the Astartes." He bows low, "How can this simple servant of the Imperium aid you in your holy mission?"

"Please, there is no need to stand upon ceremony here, I am simply paying a visit to a loyal outpost of the Imperium tell me, I am sorry what is your name?"

"Overseer Quintus my lord."

"Yes, Quintus, tell me, how long have you served here at this outpost?"

"All of my life my lord, as did my father before me and his father before him."

You nod, clearly this world has been out of touch for some time.

"Tell me overseer, do you have any news of further reinforcements arriving to aid us in our plight?"

"I am sorrowful to say that I have not my lord, aside from news that you were coming, our astropath has been undisturbed."

You frown, evidently any friendly forces were either unable or unwilling to send advanced word of their coming. But if they received the distress call at the same time as you, then they should not be too far distant, given the unreliable nature of warp travel.

"I require information regarding the agricultural areas and the industrial centers, the flow of resources and what each requires for maximum efficiency."

"Yes my lord," He nods enthusiastically, "The agricultural belt provides for the hunger of the people while the industrial centers feed the iron heart of the army and the forge. Normally, the majority of that which is produced goes to the capitol to await the tithe, as these people are of hardy stock, and require little in the way of luxuries. Now that the population has been somewhat... reduced, the remaining cities should well be able to supply these people with whatever they require to serve the Emperor.

You nod, interpreting his flowery language.

"And what can you tell me of these people? Surely you must know them well given your time here."

TBC
>>
>>25304079

"Most assuredly my lord!" He exclaims, "You would be hard pressed to find more devoted servants of the Emperor my lord, their faith is beyond question and their humility and dedication are without bound. They are faithful and diligent servents all."

Here he signs the Aquila and bows his head.

Anything further to ask?

"Does you have a tech-priest or other servant of the Adeptus Mechanicus here? If not, then before they leave, we can have a tech-priest bless the weapons of the Imperial Guard soldiers stationed here, and any equipment that requires re-anointing."

Quintus thinks for a moment before responding.

"Our world has many servants of the Machine God, though none of them are, altered, as your followers are. I have little to no idea why people hate this quest, especially when the actual Knights Inductor stories are extremely high in ratings, while people literally ambush these threads as soon as they hit archive to downvote them even before content hits. But then again I really do not care, the only opinions I really care about are those of my dedicated and imaginative players, everyone else can either give constructive criticism of just go away.

>I have little to no idea why people hate this quest,
Firstly, not flaming you here. Since you seem geniunely confused, I shall sum up the grievance.

People see it as extremely contradictory to 40K fluff. You've got Eldar and Tau buddying up, Marines who are all for multi-culturalism and... rrr... "Reasonable Sssssisters"... All of these things would never ever happen in actual 40K fluff. Like, at an inconcievable level. And it doesn't get a free pass like Cultist Chan and such because it's trying to be serious and not an obvious joke.

But whatever, you enjoy your quest in peace. I can't stop you and I won't try. Just thought I'd try to explain.
>>

Apparently, the Emperor does not like potatoes. Well hopefully he at least favours his other loyal servants.

>>
waiting for the assault.
>>
>>25304355

You make the arrangements necessary to prepare the JTF for the massive mobilization which lies before it. You pack a pair of guard companies, rocket artillery and a few tanks into a couple dropships, along with a squad of Knights and sisters in a Valkyrie each to secure the drop site as required. More guardsmen are packed into various other dropships for more rapid deployment, which set out as soon as they are ready, streaking up into the sky to arc over the horizon at their distant targets.

The rest of your forces you pile into a hastily prepared passenger train which will carry most of the way to the nearest agricultural city. From there, you must disembark and proceed on your own. You need not walk however, a few chimeras and rhinos are tucked away in cargo compartments in the back of the train.

With nothing else for you to do in the capitol, you set out on the train towards the distant city.

Also, which of your special units are where? Did you send any commanders along with the airborne group, or do you leave it in Colonel O'Niells capable hands?

>>25304429
Thank you for the opinion, I appreciate the honest answer. Personally I don't think it is too impossible, at least at its basic level, as the Knights had 1000 years of isolation to build their society. The sisters are only reasonable because the Knights killed off the old leadership and remade them after the original group tried to purge Aprior when they saw what the Knights were doing.

As for 'good' daemons and the like, I do not believe it is possible for an entire species or class of life to all be psychotically evil, there will always be outliers, and like attracts like.

And yes, the various special units you have with you will cause friction when given the correct catalyst.

Thanks for the input.
>>
>>25304549
I think the idea was We were going to be in charge of holding the line.
>>
>>25304549
You keep thinking of daemons as organic life. They are literally composed of the warp, meaning that they die without sufficient chaos shit going on. Its literally impossible for them to be reasonable because they are made of Chaos. You may as well ask a human to stop being so carbon.
>>
So I'm new to the quest and interested, and before I plunge into the archives I'd like a quick summary of how in the fuck we managed to get Eldar, Sisters of Battle, and Tau fighting on the same force without tearing each other's guts out.

Was it that we created the SoB order from the ground up within the sector that the Knights Inductor control, or what? 'Cause I just want to know how exactly that shit was handled to better grasp the tone of the quest.
>>
>>25304603
So we sent all the special units capable of battle with the other group?

I simply want this clarified before I move on.

You still have the battlesuit team and ASIS with you at present.
>>
>>25304623
Let us continue this in the other thread please.
>>
>>25304549
Cypress and her Sisters, Vael and his battlesuits are going towards the agricultural centers. Have the Battlesuits go with the airborne group that will secure the landing zone.
Colonel O'Neill to be in command, with Commander Vael second.
>>
>>25304629
Unless anyone contradicts me, You have the battlesuit team the rangers and ASIS with you, while Vael and Cypress accompanied the other task force.
>>
>>25304628
There was a warpstorm that cut off the sector from outside influence for a milienia and a half. During that time the local sororitas order objected to what the Knights were attempting to accomplish rather violently. The Knights argued the point, and won. The Tau are basically defectors or children of defectors. The eldar basically regard the Knights as an extraordinarily, but potentially extremely useful snake, due to the high number of blanks in their ranks.
>>
>>25304663
No, have the battlesuits go with Vael. I suppose ASIS may help with the defense.
>>
>>25304628

That is the premise of the setting. See the Knights Inductor entry on 1d4chan.org. It's a sector where the Imperial forces have taken some... relaxed approach with some 40k customs. Inquisition is letting it slide for now.

>>25304629

I'd say we take a squad of Sisters and Battle brothers along with some of aprior guard and tech priests to help us set up defences. ASIS and battlesuits would be probably more useful to the offensive, no?
>>
>>25304691
They won an argument with sisters of battle, and the sisters are somehow not dead? Okay, do they take orders from the marines on an order-wide basis?
>>
>>25304628
What >>25304691 said, the eldar are currently on loan from a nearby craftworld after the Knights rescued an exodite colony. the Eldar are intrigued by their behavior and sent a long some rangers to join the JTF to see what the hell is going on over there

The only tau in the force of any real importance who is actually a former member of the tau empire is commander Kyn'Vael, who is a defector, the rest are the children of defectors raised in Aprior. Of course there are some former fire warriors in your ranks, but the majority of those defected along with Vael.
>>
>>25304713
from what I understand, they shot all the leaders and reformed the order at swordpoint. I imagine the initial reformed order was unhappy, but a thousand years of assimilation has eliminated that. And from what I understand, when the Knights say jump, everyone in the aprior sector asks how high, but the knights basically never use their power because it mostly rest on their massive moral authority.

>>
>>25304549

The train was not built with your armored bulk in mind, but you have endured far worse than a cramped compartment.

Around you your brothers mutter their battle litanies and prepare for the conflict to come.

You offer words of advice and answer their questions to the best of your knowledge, before deciding to move on through the train.

You pass the Aprior guardsmen, who are always cheered by the sight of Knights, and offer words of encouragement and calm their nerves for the coming fight. Knowing that you are with them reassures them immensely, and they seem as ready as possible for the fight.

There are no local troops on the train, the Secretary Generals displeasure at your choice of destination having translated into his unit deployments, so it seems that the JTF is going in alone on this one.

You pass a praying sister and nod to commander Vael as you pass.

Further on down you see a ranger gazing out the window at the frozen landscape whisking by, and you recognize him as the one who took down the hybrid sniper back on Tyrae.

He gazes out of the window with his eyes narrowed, squinting against the light reflecting off the snow.
>>
>>25304889
Back to the battle plans.

Looks like we're sending the ASIS Team and the Battlesuits along with the agricultural offensive.

Since Commander is below Colonel, we should keep that chain of command. I suppose Cypress should be the equivalent of Vael.
>>
>>25305001

Though genestealers have organs that need to be taken right out of them long before they can be trusted, and frankly their biological makeup would be of interest to an AdMech magos that was our kinda crazy.

You walk over, gazing out of the window with him.

"Ranger." You say.

"Mon'keigh." he responds.

after a few moments of silent observation you look over to him, noting the faint look of annoyance on his features.

"What troubles you ranger?"

The ranger glances to you, then back to the window.

"I stood here meditating on the battle to come, but I found myself interrupted by something out on the snow. I tried to get a better look but was unable to find it again.

I caught a glimpse of it only for a moment, a black shape in the snow, but I do now know whether it was a pursing vehicle or a stationary object."

"And you did not report this?" You say, un-slinging your rifle.

"A ranger does not report until he is sure." The Eldar says simply.

You gaze into the snow, zooming in with your visor, but fail to see anything.

"All units be advised, possible hostiles paralleling our course, watch the snowbanks and be ready to repel hostiles."

You stay alert, but nothing else seems to happen for some time.

He already went through psychic conditioning and corrective and invasive surgeries by the AdMech back in the Aprior sector and the ASIS. He's one of the few that survived the process.

As for sanctioning Xenos, all of the xenos working for us are sanctioned by the Chapter and ASIS; the Ordo Xenos and Radical Inquisitors have already provided tentative approval pending our success in the JTF's missions.

Jager, the field leader of the ASIS team, is a genestealer hybrid, who was captured by ASIS many years ago when he was a child after they raided his brood.

He underwent years of corrective surgery and psychic therapy to remove the broodminds control and 'raise' him to be a functioning individual.

He signed on with the ASIS task force and has been kicking ass ever since.

Also, his mind is warded against intrusion, preventing the broodmind or hivemind from taking him over, as well as preventing casual scans from accessing his memories.

ASIS was just as worried about a psyker getting into his head as you are.

I take it they've been sanctioned by Aprior branch of ecclesiarchy. How much that counts for to actual inquisition... probably not much. We should keep him away from any non-aprior imperials and, to be honest, I don't like idea of him coming to contact with more 'nids. Although he did perform quite well against the last batch.

Anyway, may the Emperor grant us and Vael speed.

Basically, the puritan inquisitors are screaming 'BURN THE HERETIC' , while the radicals are holding them back by their coattails saying 'But what if they're right?"

They have agreed to an uneasy truce while they wait and see how the JTF acts in the field.

And it's less a 'few who survived' as a 'few who recovered so well' he was also one of the first to actually recover properly without suffering mental damage. But yes, your explanation is largely correct.

Not that it really matters which force goes where, each was determined by the players to be equally important and have the same amount of orks storming the walls.

>I thought I was clear, train goes to agricultural center, dropships to industry.
Well that's clear enough, but we said to have Smith go to the industrial center back when you asked where we should go.
It's not a matter of clarity, it's a matter of you getting distracted and writing up the wrong choice.

The problem is that wards, in the Imperium, are at best a deterrant to anything truly powerful. It's why primaris psykers, if lucky, are killed by their implants when something mean enough wants to fuck with them after its chaos cult has had enough of that psyker's shenanigans on the battlefield.

He should never get anywhere near a mission involving tyranids, is what I am saying, because if the Hive Mind wanted him for a second the thing would go through whatever safeguards we put in place like a wolverine tearing through wet cardboard. This is just the way scale works, he's an individual and the hive mind is a galaxy-devouring terror.

This. I believe there was something of a consensus that we would be defending while rest of our staff will take the offensive. After they've done captured enough potatoes they would come aid us in securing the industrial sector for good.

I'm not saying looking for inspiration in Helm's Deep would be a good idea, but the situation shares some similarities
>>

We don't have a daemon on our roster, although I'm sure OP would be happy to put one there. I vote against. We're already giving potential inquisitors enough to swallow, even if we manage to keep our agent hidden from them.

You activate your vox. "This is Captain Smith to the Midnight Flame, I require a thermal scan of the area near the train, we have possible hostiles shadowing us."

"Just a moment Captain," Comes Reed's calm voice, "Bringing up the satellite scan now."

The scan is fed to your dataslate, and you examine the blotches of color with a keen eye.

A long red line is the train running along the tracks. For a few moments you see nothing more, but then tiny dots of red flare up and then vanish, moving mostly parallel to the tracks, but drawing closer. Suddenly the lead points swerve inwards towards the train.

"JTF hostiles inbound!" You vox, "To arms!"

You drop down just as the first shot shatters the window, looking through the empty space you see the first of the orkish warbikes swerving towards the train, firing as they approach.

State actions and roll, d100, low is good, best of three.

Sharpshooters to roosts, deploy mobile units to the train's flanks to keep up with the rest of us while we maintain speed or increase it, anything with jump packs needs to give their command structure some fun hit and run tactics in hopes of screwing up their ability to lead coherent assaults, and we can offer the brutes leading the more dangerous warbands the fun distraction of champion warfare to sow even more disorder by getting our heavy hitters out there for at least long enough to engage the command squads and fuck up force cohesion.

Any lighter troops need to make use of hammer and anvil tactics and maintain pressure on the ork warbands.

"All units," you vox, "Ork bikers on both sides, aim for the bikes themselves, take out the transports and leave them behind!"

You raise up and fire a few shots, bolter rounds exploding the gastank of one ork bike, sending its shouting pilot tumbling into the snow.

"Vael, what is your status, I need your battlesuits in the air to take the heat off the train!"

"Moving Captain," The tau voxes back, "The orks are keeping us pinned, and making getting to the suits difficult."

The ranger next to you raises his rifle and puts a shot through a bikes front end, separating the front wheel from the rest, the chassis plunging into a snowdrift and vanishing.

You fire a few more shots, downing another bike, and the volleys of lasgun fire from the rest of the train down more, but the challenging conditions make the shots difficult to land.

Luckily the orks are usually terrible shots in good weather, so their weight of numbers does less good than one would think.

You continue to lay down covering fire, taking down a few more orks, but they seem to simply keep coming, melting out of the snow to engage you as you take down their comrades.

the ranger fires again, taking out another ork, as your shots foul the rear wheel of another bike, leaving the pilot screaming with incoherent rage as his vehicle slows to a stop and the battle leaves him behind.

"Captain." You hear Vael vox again. "We have hit a snag on the way to the suits, the orks have boarded."

You hear orkish war cries from the compartment beside you, and slam through the door to see an ork facing away from you.

Before you can engage it, you see a bolter smash down into the orks face, crumpling its knees and bringing int down, the Knight responsible blasting it apart with his bolter.

"Brother Linnaeus, what is the situation?"

The Knight looks up at you, "Captain, the orks have boarded in some numbers in the next two compartments and separated our forces, they are currently preventing Commander Vael and his pilots from reaching their suits."

You advance to the door and throw it wide open looking into the next car. The room is filled with Aprior guardsmen and a few sisters, a dozen orks are clambering through broken windows and the shouts of the wounded fill the air.

"Shoot them off!" You say a bit unnecessarily, firing your bolter into the clambering mass of orks. One of the orks already on the train sees you as the biggest enemy here and, in typical ork fashion, charges you.

You bring up your bolter to meet it, but the ork swats the barrel aside and you crash to the floor.

The two of you struggle for a few seconds before you rise up and stab the ork with your fighting knife, killing it.

"Room secure!" Linnaeus says.

"Move up." You command, rising from the corpse and moving to the next door.

TBC
>>
>>25306403

You kick in the next door and advance, seeing a group of orks halfway through hacking their way through the door into the next compartment.

The only guardsmen in this car are on the floor, and it does not seem they will rise again.

"Light them up!" you vox, laying into the group with automatic fire. You mow most of them down before they can close with you, fighting in a desperate melee with the few who close.

after a minute or so of frantic fighting, you manage to boot the last ork out a hole in the side of the train.

"The path is clear, Vael move!"

The remains of the door fall open and the tau commander and his pilots rush through, nodding in thanks as they pass you.

You take up cover and return fire on a few more orks, and about a minute later you hear the shriek of engines, and the thundering of massive footfalls on the roof.

The battlesuits dance through the combat zone, skimming over the speeding snow, leaping from car to car, plasma blasts and bolter fire tearing the ork bikers apart.

A few short minutes later, a battlesuit kicks the last orkish biker interested in fighting clear of his vehicle, the survivors riding off to vanish into the snow, howling in dismay.

It seems that you have won this engagement.

Any actions, or wait until the deployment zone.

Also, I would be willing to change the destination to the industrial centers to correct for my previous mistake.

no, to the Farms. for morale, since it's both civilians and soldiers we need to look after. giving food to both makes our men fight all the harder and the civilians to give more of themselves to the imperium, since they will have the strength to do so.
>>
>>25306511
The damaged train manages to hold together as you near the farming belt, coming to a grinding halt as you decide you are close enough to engage on your own.

You order the train to a halt, the troops disembarking and filing into their various armored transports for the final leg of the journey, you taking your seat in the command rhino to monitor the situation.

You check in with Cypress in the other strike force, their faster transports getting them to their fights quicker. Between air support and orbital strikes, they are making some tenuous headway, although the remaining orks are dug in and very numerous, and it will take them some time to secure the cities properly.

Ahead of you lays the agricultural centers of Volkgarods 'temperate' zone. Which seems to translate to slightly less frozen.

You do not immediately notice any signs of orkish activity on the street you are approaching, but you see the strobing light of battle in the distance.

How do you proceed?

>>25306884
indeed. battlesuits are to harry their flanks and perform general hit-and-run missions, hopefully luring them out of their positions so we can get them in the open.
>>
>>25306843

You check the orbital scan of the city ahead, locating major sources of heat, listening to the faint vox signals being sent out by the defenders, nothing much you can pick up on.

"Commander Vael, move to scout ahead, report on enemy positions as you see them and await further instructions."

"Deploying." The suits dash forwards, leaping from the ground and igniting their thrusters to skate across the ground towards the city.

For a few moments there is nothing, then you see the bursts of plasma and bolter fire.

"Captain, we have encountered the orkish forces." Vael voxes, his voice a little muffled by the sounds of gunfire rattling around in his suit.

"We were engaged by an orkish column heading towards the defenders positions, fairly standard infantry, some ranged many melee and, wait one." He goes quiet for a moment. "scratch that Captain, they have a battle wagon and a few trucks up here, I am getting my people to higher ground."

In the distance you see the shimmering figures of the suits leaping up the sides of buildings to take refuge up high, firing back down into the mass of orks below.

"Guardsmen, maneuver your vehicles to create a roadblock across the main intersection, I will take the Knights and flank the enemy. Vael, when the guard set up the ambush lead the orks into it, I will attack from the rear and crush them."

Your units give their affirmatives and move into position, the chimeras moving to block the roadway. You watch from the turret as the battlesuits dash down the street, dragging a screaming horde of orks with them. You encounter a small group with the same flanking idea as you, and dissuade them from their mission, soft crunches are heard through the armor.

You come around the corner looking directly at the rear of the charging mass of orks, being laid into by multilasers and the various weapons of the battlesuits.

There are numerous dismounted orks, two trucks with their troop bays empty, and one large battlewagon firing into the chimeras with various large cannons.

"The trap is set." you vox, "Engage at will!"

the pounding of the Fenris tanks send bits of ork flying and gouge great holes from the armor of the battlewagon.

"Knights, dismount and engage the enemy!"

The back ramp of the rhino hits the ground and the Knights pour out, adding bolter and plasma fire, and the occasional rocket to the chaotic mix.

One of the trucks goes up in a greasy plume after it is hit by a Fenris, then a chimera loses a track and half its center compartment to a shot from the battlewagon.

A battlesuit drops down from above, landing on the top of the wagon, tortured metal groaning in protest as the suit fires a pair of plasma guns down into the turret, melting through the armor and touching off the ammunition. The suit leaps off and ignites its thrusters, the fireball barely touching its feet as it jets away.

"Tighten the noose!" You vox, "Finish them!"

The armor and infantry close the gap, obliterating the few orks which remain standing with overwhelming firepower, your strategy has worked well, but there is some damage to the guard chimeras, though the Fenris tanks are intact.

Behind you the tortured city looms.

You do a cursory examination, but even to you it is clear that this chimera is beyond your current ability to repair, so you strip it for spare parts, thanking the machine spirit for its continued service, and promising it that you will come back for it.

Returning to your command vehicle, you scan the vox frequencies, once again hearing the voices of local soldiers on the set, now coming in clear enough to converse with.

"This is Captain Smith of the Aprior JTF, I have come to assist you in the retaking of this city."

After a moment, the vox is handed over to a frantic, but relived voice. "Yes, hello? Hello! This is Colonel Federov of the third guard army, how soon can you reach us? The beasts press heavily upon us and I do not know how long we can hold out!"

You triangulate his signal with your satellites, and estimate that you could be there in about twenty minutes if you leave now.

You suspect that the orks are likely encircling his position in a similar crushing ring that you encountered in the capital, and attacking from the rear you have a chance of breaking through.

Or you could roam the city and attack targets of opportunity with the orks backs turned.

Or any other viable plan.

"Hold on Federov, we are on the way, ETA twenty minutes!"

"Good to hear Captain, we shall hold the, damn, they come again, to the walls!"

The vox abruptly cuts out.

"Mount up people, we are rescuing the local garrison, we move now!"

Your forces pile back into their various vehicles, the guardsmen sharing out the extra space in their chimeras with the crew of the wrecked vehicle.

You drive through the city for fifteen minutes, tanks leading the way, obliterating the occasional unlucky ork or small group, before you see the great mass of orks before you, the greenskin horde preoccupied with attempting to storm the walls of the central fortress the city seems to have been built around.

The orks are all facing away from you, they never saw you coming.

The Fenris tanks roll forwards, the unit commander voxing to his men.

"This is Hammer to all units, forwards, crush them beneath our armor!"

The tanks leap forwards at speeds unheard of in the Imperium, holding fire until the last moment.

Canister shot and bolter fire tears the orkish infantry to pieces, while many more vanish under the whirring treads.

Fanning outwards from the spearhead of the Fenris charge, you and the other transports mop up what is left of the orkish force besieging the fort, battlesuits and chimeras slashing at the orks exposed flanks.

Seeing the sudden wave of steel and ceramite rolling towards them with no warning, the remaining orks break and flee back into the city with a large part of their force intact.

The tortured gate opens wide and your forces skid inside the fortress, cheering local soldiers waving their rifles in the air and hooting with joy to see the greenskins running.

Their joy quickly turns to awe as you pop the top hatch.

The Colonel you spoke to comes out to meet you, and you exchange salutes. Not technically mandated, but the show if respect goes a long way towards cheering the men.

"Crais, Vael, establish a perimeter. Harry and harass enemy forces as you see fit."

You turn to the Colonel before you. "What is the situation son?"

Federov looks at his boots and shakes his head. "Bad, the invaders have attacked constantly without relent or respite for weeks. We have held them back but," He looks over at a row of bodies under sheets, "casualties have been heavy."

"You did your duty soldier." You place a hand on his shoulder, "They have not fallen in vain."

"Right sir, the enemy controls much of the city and surrounding countryside. We have lost contact with the other garrisons, it seems that we may be all that is left."

"Do not despair, together we shall hold them back, and then drive them into the night once more."

You stand tall and look over the parapet, seeing the flickers of movement on the edge of your vision, and steel yourself for the battle to come.
I think that's the end for tonight, I will not be on tomorrow, and possibly not on sunday, if I'm on sunday I will post it fairly early to let people see it and file in before I actually start.
