-I want to eat it.-

The voice echoes inside of you. You feel it grow stronger.

-I'm hungry. Why won't you eat it?-

The Hunger grows stronger.

-I can eat it. LET ME EAT IT!-

You don't have a choice. You embrace the hunger.

The magic spikes into you...and you consume it - live magic. It's absorbed into your body, searing burning, but taken in nonetheless. The hunger shard vibrates with darkness, opening like a maw.

>you take 2 damage (32/52)

The delicate equipment begins to spark and smoke. Michael growls. He increases the flow of Light form his body. The spears of light work around you like worming fingers, grabbing at the very shards inside your body!

But you consume faster, eating it all, embracing the pain, ignoring it, forging through it. Darkxis's soul doesn't care. It eats everything you allow it to touch. The fingers of light can't grasp anything if you keep biting them off.

>you take 3 damage (29/52)

There's a knock on Michael's door.

The magical equipment sparks and snaps. The magic backfires. Michael falls backward as the door opens.

"Highest, I sent - Highest!" Auriel rushes into the room as smoke clouds the air. "Highest, are you - "

"Get away from me!" Michael snaps. Auriel flinches backward. He feels for his crutch, then struggles upright. He glares at you with cold, hateful eyes. "You'll reget that, Shadow. You'll regret that sorely!"

"What...what's going on?" Auriel asks.

"...Auriel. Stay here. Actually, just open the window. I'll be right back." Michael limps to the door, uses his good arm to throw it open, and stumbles out. You note burns on his hand and leg.

Good.

You've never been happier to see an angel in your life.

Michael limps back in. His hands are healed. The burns are gone. He looks a bit disheveled, but perfectly healthy...aside from the half of his body that is withered to nothing.

"...Michael. What happened?" Auriel asks.

"Well...I was trying to discern what sort of a summon the creature was," Michael says. His voice is completely different - even, measured. Precise. "It didn't enjoy the discernment. I attempted to make it as painless as possible, but...you know how these things are."

Auriel nods with understanding. "Of course."

Michael wobbles slightly. Auriel catches his bad arm, not hesitating to touch the cracked, beaten skin of the curse. "Here. let me help you."

He leans on her as she helps him into the wide sofa he was lounging in earlier. She shoots you an annoyed glare.

"Here," he says, "we don't need it watching us."

Your vision goes dark again. You feel angry. Very angry.

"Now. I can feel that your powers have deserted you."

"...they have, Highest. I...have lost Hyperion's blessing."

"It seems we're birds of a feather," Michael says. "I know how it feels to lose much to a Demon Lord."

"...I knew you would understand," Auriel says. You cringe at the note of hope in her voice.

"How has your reception been?"

"Mixed," she says. "Tyrael...and others, have stood with me, advocating that I keep my current position. Others...have not."

"Anahita," Michael says.

"She has always been...a tough critic," Auriel says.

"You don't need to hold back with me."

You hear Auriel stand. She huffs in frustration. "...she's always been jealous...but this is more than that. She really, truly covets my position for herself. She would seek me cast aside. Apparently, I'm fit to be a patrol leader out on the Frontier."

Michael shifts on the sofa. "You've always been a favorite of the people. Heavensgate needs you. That is the source of her envy, truly. Now..." He sighs. "We fight the Shadow. But truly, at times, we are our own worst enemy."

"I know. I appreciate your words, Michael. Thank you."

"You'd still knock them dead."

"Do I knock you dead?" Michael says jokingly.

"Quit complaining, I'm a doctor." She giggles a few more times. Eventually, you here another rustling.

"What's the prognosis, doc?"

"I need some time to work it out," he says. "Ultimately...the blessing is a special kind of enchantment...an enchantment placed upon the human soul itself. There's one thing I can think of."

"What's that?"

"You know how summons mark the souls of the summoner?"

"Yes."

"Well, in a similar manner - not totally the same, of course - I've noticed that angel souls are unique, as well. We are marked. If I use that as a base, I may be able to 'reignite' the angelic blessing. No guarantees...but there's some real hope, I think."

"...I hope so. I really do."

"Well, I've got some work to do. My friend over there needs a good once-over."

"The body, or...the creature?"

Michael laughs. "Both, actually. But next time, we can use the other room."

>>
>>25312535
I know some folks aren't too fond off Auriel, but jesus hearing Michael gave me legitimate shudders of horror.
>>
<Auriel.>

You send her an impression of Michael - a grinning, maniacal Michael, his face twisted in nostalgia as he recalls one of his freakish conquests.

<It's hilarious, actually.> His voice echoes into her head from your memories. <Bringing them so low they beg for death. There was this one woman, you see - I cut off her arms. I brought her around my quarters - that's actually the upper portion of the entire tower you're in - on a leash. I kicked her around, made her eat from bowls. She begged me to die. I told her I'd kill her if she fucked me. Best sex I ever had. I buried her in the Great Gardens, under a tree. I visit sometimes, when I need a laugh.>

You hear a stumble. A concerned Michael's voice rings out. "Are you alright?"

"...fine." A scuff of a shoe as she picks herself up. "I'm fine."

<I wouldn't like about this. If you don't believe in me...believe in Flint's trust in me,> you say. <He's poison. Find the body.>

"...thank you, Michael. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Until then."

The door opens, then shuts.

There's a long silence. You feel yourself growing tense.

The magic shroud falls off your cage. Michael stands there, fists clenched - though his bad arm twitches more than anything. "...if you had any idea of how awful I could make your life," he says, "you wouldn't have done that. Embarrassing me - in front of her. HER!" Michael hobbles up to the cage, his crutch thumping into the floor with each step. "I won't just take what I need from you, Shadow. I'm going to make you suffer. I'm going to make you pay tenfold - plus interest. You'll beg me for death before it's over, but I won't give it to you. I'll just keep going, until you're just a little drop of black ink, too weak to move - and then I'll put you in a bottle and bury you in the earth, and there you can stay until the end of times."

Michael turns, and begins to walk out of the room. "Expect me tomorrow, Shadow. Bright and early!"

Do you say anything to him?

>write-in
>just let him go

You remain silent. Michael slams the door behind him without another word.

You feel as though you have more to say. You focus hard...you've never needed to see another person to speak to them, but you always had an idea of where they were.

<Auriel. If you can hear me...you need to protect Flint. Keep your relationship with him a secret. You cannot trust Michael. Please, help me.>

Uncertain if your words reached her, you settle back to floating at the center of your cage. The confined space put you on edge. You're used to shifting, warping, bending as you please. Now, you're curled into a tight ball.

But it's barely afternoon. You have an entire day to break free. He was foolish to leave you alone.

>>25313145

I am glad, at least, you take some responsibility for your choices. I understand that I am partly to blame because of how I may have phrased things, but it's frustrating to hear people lay it all on my shoulders when I'm not even making the choice myself.

I've tried to make it very clear that you always have more options than are stated in the greentext, but they seem to lead to linear thinking nonetheless.

What would people think about me stopping the hints and the prodding and maintaining as neutral a tone as possible? I'm not here to make people upset, I want to have fun and write/play a good story.

>but I suppose I didn't think my clever plan all the way through.

The problem is that its only a clever plan to your mind, who knows how different you think compared to us, you cannot ever assume that one of your players will understand something you put in the game unless you put yourself in their shoes and go through it as they would. As a game designer this is probably the hardest thing I have to deal with, making players understand my designs as if they discovered them as their own, that fine line between feeding it to them by spoon, and making it impossibly obscure to find.

This is one thing novels and other forms of written literature get around, because there is not interaction on the readers behalf, they interpret it as their own version, their own discovery, and it never matters if its different to what the author intended.

But the moment you have someone interact with your design, unless you understand the inner intimate working or your players mind, you cannot ever assume anything without it going spectacularly badly, for all parties involved.

You are all great players. I enjoy writing the quest. If you get frustrated again in the future, I hope you'll remember the mostly-good parts, and lend me the benefit of the doubt until I can write may way back out.

The problem with going like this is that I get no edits, no second chances, no time to read back through and say "oh. That part sucks. I'll just cut it out." So you're stuck with all the crap I'd normally get rid of.

For example, I enjoyed thinking up Michael as a character, but did I overwrite him? Was I so excited to get him out in the post that I went too far? Probably. In the heat of the moment, it's the best thing ever, but I'll look at it tomorrow and wince at every typo.

Fine with me. We still have an elf queen to smack out of a coma for erasing our memory. At this rate she'll probably be dead before we can ask "what the fuck?"
>>
>>25313514
>>25313353

Also there's really the fact that we didn't have a whole lot of choice but to go along with Fang.

Dude was a lot more powerful than us and could have squashed us if we stepped out of line.
>>
>>25313514
Micheal seems to jump straight to the extremes just a tad too quickly and without subtlety, but as a caricature villain he's pretty good.

But I feel like he's just replaced Magnock as 'That villain everybody wants to punch in the dick'. I guess that's a good thing? Sometimes you just want to make a villain that will make your players go from 0 to Dickpunch in 6 seconds flat.
>>
>>25313569
That's the reason I think we need a base of operations. A place to sit back, relax a little. Chill for a few days and meditate.

>>25313446 here, just being a smartass. Kind of. Still, I forsee a lot of searching through sup/tg/ tomorrow...

Anyways, see you tomorrow, SM. G'night!
>>
>>25313569
Yeah. Because even though we've been through a lot with Obis, and even though he saved Flint during the cave-in, I hardly feel attached to him at all. He's worse than Joey because he's not actually fun to laugh at. Well, except that one jab from the lich king but other than that he has said barley anything since his Banished Prince monologue.
>>
>>25313598
A castle in the middle of bumfuck nowhere, with shadow totems lining every single wall in triplicate

All Shadow's friends can live there. Forever. And they'll never need to leave. Why would they ever think of leaving the castle, where it's so safe and there are no assholes to kidnap, rape or mock them.
>>
>>25313514
Eh, Mike's a little over the top, but only because he was so overt (and apparently honest with us, I kinda hoped it was mostly mind games to get us to send Auri on a wild goose chase, the failure of which would help erode her faith in us...). Other than that I liked his unrepentant sociopathy. The problem is that I don't trust some of my fellow players not to press all the wrong buttons with this guy and get both Auri and Flint killed...

That's true.
Probably one of the reasons I'm totally fine with leaving him behind too.

So we make sure Fang doesn't survive the war. Big deal.
>>
>>25313878
True, just remember that we'll need to double back for the staff of the winds or whatever at some point.

>>25313859
Fang's an okay guy.

I mean, sure, he's a bit of a dick politically, but you can't help but love his brand of snark.
>>
>>25313878
Geb is our next immediate goal, and we need the staff of winds for that.

Which means that once we escape and get Flint and Auriel to come along, our next destination is Archon. This is the halfway point in the game where your party gets split and there is a timeskip. The part which follows is a chapter devoted to tracking down the party members and persuading them to follow you again.
>>
>>25313859
Your point? We aren't planning to open up a daycare, we need warriors and weapons. Let Fang keep her under control, mostly sane and pointed in the right direction.

>persuading them to follow you again.
Or, alternatively, find a new party.
Or go it alone. We have options.

I'm starting to think Erebus had the right of it, with the whole "aloof, uncaring, uninvolved, unresponsive" bit.

Getting involved in human affairs seems to lead to a whole lot of pain.

Erebus mastered the art of not giving a fuck.

I think, when the time comes for Elementomachy 2: Electric BOOgaloo our organization should be structured something like this.
>Abby, Flint, maybe Joey as a completely and totally loyal lackey.

>The rest of the military chain of command.
We need to keep a VERY FUCKING TIGHT LEASH on everyone without being directly involved in very much at all.

FUCK
25 THREADS
KNOW WHAT WE FOUND IN THREAD 5?
We FOUND THE FUCKING sword blade thing. Shadowy sword blade. It was in the chest. We found those other shards later, in another chest, but a shadow pool. Where we consumed the shard of isolation.
What if she sword blade is a shard of true darkness?
>>
I wonder how many people realize we've only existed for like 2 weeks. This is some serious power growth we're having. 1 year from now the world will be a very different place. Very. (Especially since we'll have all of dem sweet sweet purple upgrades)
>>
>>25314389
I thought the same thing earlier, but I assumed it was too retarded to be true.
>>
>>25314389
That was thread 6, here is the relevant passage.

>You stare at the sword. Your gaze seems drawn, no, STUCK on the thing.

>Time seems to slow down. Flint's footsteps fade into the darkness.

>You're reminded of something. Something even the wall in your memory can't hold back...

>...your senses flash back to you.

>8 flames burn in your vision. Of the 8, three are close - three others, three existences, pillars, foundations, three Others...spirit, like orange mist...water, like blue rivers...earth, soil, the smell of a spring morning...

>And then, distant - so far you're not even sure they're in this world, but so clear you know they're there absolutely - wind as the searing air of a desert, fire like a volcano's wrath, lightning from an angry thundercloud -

>Light to pierce darkness.

>The sensations fade. But they're there, hovering.

>Spirit - you can feel it - Spirit is close. Just to the south.

>Water is far to the southwest.

>Earth, far to the southeast.

>The other four...impossibly far, even for you to tell.

Then, later

>You flash a note of caution to Flint. He stays his hands. "What is it?"

>You send him an image of the shard.

I think this might be it, and I feel kind of retarded.
>>
I think the take away message is that playing along with an act is never the right choice. Last time we barely managed to avoid ending up imprisoned because we stopped playing along, and then now we actually did end up imprisoned because we decided it was a good idea after all. If we try to pretend to be anything, we're just going to get trapped in a "if you want to keep playing along, you need to completely fuck yourself over" type situation.

Also we really need to stop trusting other people. SM expected us to be suspicious of everyone, so when we weren't we ended up getting fucked over. From here on out, we need to follow our own path, and not trust others to have our interests at heart. Because it's become pretty clear that no one does.
>>
>>25314403
At this rate, a year from now we'll just be in someone else's cage.
>>
>>25314439
the problem with NOT playing along is that Yi Fang could squash us. And when SM put forth the option of running it wasn't phrased in a way that made it seem like 'flee and regroup' it was more like 'flee and abandon our friends to their fates'

We just left that shard, and the other fragments with Fang. We gave him our fanny pack. Fuck.
>>
Also my opinion is it's something to do with fusing the shards/us together. Maybe >>25314389
is right and we need to take it in aswell?
>>
>>25314466
The second we get our fanny pack back, we CONSUME the fuck outta those shards. Granted, that's probably going to be 3 or 4 threads from now.
>>
>>25314389
>>25314436
Hmmm... what if, once we collect enough shards, we became able to summon some kind of shadow sword?
>>
>>25314019
Except humans aren't at all interested in justice.
So really, we're much better off going back to just trying to figure out what our deal is. The current focus on human troubles hasn't gotten us anywhere.
>>
>>25314436
so our caution in NOT CONSUME as it will destroy precious artifacts... was in fact the wrong choice.
>>
>>25314458
Personally, I think fleeing and abandoning the group is probably the best course. Our ability to help them is essentially nonexistent given the reaction to what we are. Everyone involved would be better off if we went our separate ways. They wouldn't have to deal with a party member who everyone and their dog tries to kill on sight, and we wouldn't have anything that might prevent us from running away at mach 3 if things got too rough to handle.
>>
>>25314483
If ever, given that we're not going to be a match for Sandalphon at any point in the foreseeable future.
>>
>>25314544
fucking off and doing our own thing is pretty well OOC at this point, we've been spending our entire time gathering people together. First with Flint and Abigail, Then with the various other people who have gravitated towards us. If you haven't noticed our party has gotten quite large. Hell the last threads have been all about precisely that. Getting back together with Abigail. Abandoning anyone would be at this point something Shadow would not do unless forced by circumstance.
>>
Maybe we were actually Erebus' sword. Not him.

That would make things... interesting
>>
>>25314680
.... i like it.
>>
>>25314648
> fucking off and doing our own thing is pretty well OOC at this point

We've run off to do thing ourselves numerous times.

Also, I think getting imprisoned and turned into the pet of a sadistic torturer angel becuase of our concern for the group would definitely be cause for a completely in-character reassessment of our priorities. Especially considering that one of the members of that party seems perfectly content to not only leave us in that torturer's care, but also fool around with him as well.
>>
>>25314770
let me clarify fucking off and doing our own thing while the fate of our companions is uncertain is OOC. If they were in a safe place we would be alright with going on quests without them.
>>
>>25314809
Our ability to help Abigail has not improved, there is still the issue of Fang being able to step on us.
Our ability to help Flint is severely limited by his relationship with Auriel, who is back where she always wanted to be. He won't want to leave her, she won't want to leave period, and they'll both be stuck in that position. And again, there is the issue of powerful NPCs more than capable of simply stepping on us if we make trouble.

We can't help them at this point, so whether or not they're being left in a safe place or not makes zero difference. Safe or not, we're equally unable to help them.
>>
>>25314892
Yi Fang isn't a threat to Abigail, as he seems to want her to prosper. The threat is from his Scholomance. Which we know from Obis is a death trap for students. And Auriel has not given any indication she plans on abandoning Flint and Flint still needs to get rid of that parasite, which only Yi Fang has shown the ability to do so. So I doubt either them are 'stuck' here.

As far as powerful NPCs stepping on us if we make trouble... well theres one right nearby who is quite weakened due to a curse. And we have very good reason to want him dead. With him consumed we might be able to get some more stealth abilities like Compress and whatever Silent leads to in order to sneak on by the more astute angels.
>>
>>25314985
> As far as powerful NPCs stepping on us if we make trouble... well theres one right nearby who is quite weakened due to a curse.

And he's far from the only NPC there, plenty of whom are way out of our league even if we had another 20 or so XP to play with. What we need is the ability to flee, and we don't have that if we have to cart around a party of humans. We essentially don't have flight or particularly good speed because we can't use it when we're stuck with a human party. The party moves at the speed of its slowest member, which means that if we want to be able to utilize our abilities to escape, that slowest member needs to be us.
>>
>>25315111
actually we CAN cart around a bunch of NPCs. Juggernaut and replicate gave us the ability to form a winged carriage that we can put people into and easily carry.
>>
>>25315135
In which case it will still completely cripple any attempt to go undetected, thus forcing us into a head-on confrontation that we WILL lose.
>>
>>25315135
Too bad we get stuck underfuckingground the second we acquire said ability.

You're riding a trollercoaster, son.
>>
>>25315193
aren't we high up at the moment?

>>25315192
once we have everyone together enough to go on a carriage ride... its supersonic time and we don't care about stealth. All Aboard Shadow Airlines. Next Stop: Archon.
>>
>>25315216
First we were in Magcocks rape mines. Then we were in the airship of rape surrounded by demigods. Now we're in the sociopath angel Michael's rape dungeon.

First underground, then high up, now I have no clue. I was under the impression that this was a basement of some tower, but he did say "open a window" so it may be higher up.
>>
>Auriel jogs to the window and thrusts it open. Cool air whips in from the outside. You realize you're rather high up.

yup we're high up. gotta remember angels = wings.
>>
>Now realizing that we never got bird-anons shitty comics
This is why today's threads sucked so much dick.
>>
>>25315247
Not like it matters now anyway. We have no party to escape with.
>>
>>25315216
> once we have everyone together enough to go on a carriage ride

This is going to be a lot more difficult than you seem to think. We are smack in the middle of fuck-shadow central.
>>
>>25315333
I didn't say it'd be easy... but it shouldn't be impossible.
>>
>>25315354
Considering it's become pretty clear that this was The Wrong Choice, I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect only painful options for a little while.
>>
>>25315400
SM actually did mention that there will be only pain for the next few threads, because otherwise we won't appreciate doing well.
>>
>>25315550
if this shit lasts more than 2 threads, we won't appreciate anything at all

Today was awful. And I will continue to bitch about it in every thread.

>>25314985
> And Auriel has not given any indication she plans on abandoning Flint and Flint still needs to get rid of that parasite, which only Yi Fang has shown the ability to do so. So I doubt either them are 'stuck' here.

At this point, I would be perfectly fine leaving Auriel behind. If she's fine with leaving us as Michael's latest pet, I see no reason why we shouldn't return the favor.

>Auriel goes searching for body
>Uses raise zombie
>Armless corpses start worming their way out of the ground.
