The few minutes of struggles robbed this once beautiful place of every remaining shred of dignity and splendor.

This kind of musing helps relieve the pain somewhat. The fact you are managing to stay upright for now is sorely for the fact that Focus is dulling the pain and you are not looking forward to the prospect of letting go when you’ll need to get healed…

You only grunt a half-assed answer. Trampled by the second knocking of the door, you shift a little trying not to move your arm or put pressure on your ribs with your good arm around Emeth's shoulder. The girl is actually in a worse shape than you. Besides her missing arm and the other being deactivated, her body and clothes have tears and scratches in numerous places. Even her cheek presents a few painful lines given to her by her numerous aggressors yet, she’s standing with enough resolution to truly put any soldier to shame, and helping you effortlessly despite her lack of arms.

The shaman finally reached the door to open a rectangular peephole and, upon looking the individual face to face, you hear her remark.

"I don’t think I’ll be able to satisfy the arrangement, regardless, it’s not pretty in here."

Without waiting for the rebuttal the tall monster forcefully slips back the rectangle in place in a loud ‘’k-chink’’, grabs one of the big round metal handles and gently pries open the door, big enough to let a relatively small person squeeze through unhindered which, you see, happen fast when you spot the strangely colorful uniform of white and blue.
You recognize her the moment you lay eyes upon her face.

Leila Xenon enters with a stone face, her long blond hair would easily rival Hadraniel if it weren’t for that that they’ve been put in a ponytail that now cascade down her back. To see her in something different than the quasi-nun uniform she previously had feels strange. The field vestments of the Purifiers operator is certainly filled with a no-nonsense attitude with heavy, long sleeved shirt full of pockets and heavy, tough pants made for swift travels with metallic reinforcement in the knees, thighs and shins. Finally, it was coupled with a pair of black gloves and a heavy, wicked flamberge on her back and you’ve got someone with a harsh aura.
How can she wield such a blade effectively? She isn’t the tallest of people…

The Shaman may as well be talking to a wall, for when your eyes cross the forest green of the Purifier, the girls mouth hangs open for a brief second and her expression is rabidly morphed into a frown as she completely disregards the three gored corpses in favor of glaring at you – and only you- not even realizing you are wounded, such is her astonishment.

Also, I noticed a potential plot hole from last thread. You said these loops are each 30 days long. Yet he recalled a childhood memory he "shouldn't" have. This does not jive. Either he actually had that memory, or the origin point of each loop goes back to his childhood, possibly all the way back to his moment of birth. This would contradict your previous assertions.

To make a long story short, the point of origin of each loops is always the same; waking up with amnesia in that field of skeletons but each timeline always had a small amount of little difference here and there that create a ‘’true’’ divergence so to speak, it was the manipulations of said events that even began to allow the results you see today.

As for why Siegfried managed to access something that happened in another line (remember that it was only a small discussion that didn’t amount anywhere; our frosty friend still died), the reason is simple: our protagonist is the son of a living embodiment of humanity’s good will, which can easily translate to a manifestation of the planet itself who is and always will be a silent observer, if our diplomat ended up dissected, his insides won’t exactly be in the norm.

When Mana awakened him to the truth; his status has a demi-god also woke up and memories of pasts long gone and erased can and will flash up, his memory isn’t entirely absolute given that he’s able to have a sort of ‘’half access’’ to the memories of his loops, similar to Tsukiyomi, but his is mostly unconscious.

Pretty damn sure the church will go Philosopher Path on our asses if they smell the fact that we are not *entirely* human. Same goes for if/when they find out Emeth has no control rune. They've tried everything to figure out magic BS, a new potential lead dangling in front of them will be impossible to resist.

Emeth take a step back and you grunt in pain as the movement move your wounded side but, just now you realized that you were concentrating too hard on enduring to realize how Leila was walking toward you, her body light up in white as her veins flared up in Holy, coloring her peach skin with a foreign substance.
It was only with a desperate reflex that you let go of Focus as her magic washed over your body, the unbearable pain quickly became a cold numbing that spread all over your right side… then disappear when the blonde let go of her own trance, your previous pain now a bad memory.

While her face didn’t betray any emotions, her murmur contained obvious fondness that quickly became nothing as she stepped back.

Of course, Leila was already halfway in taking out her flameberge while embracing Focus once more, shielding herself with a transparent golden screen while you simply stared, frowning as some pebbles landed around you.

That reaction was… excessive but not exactly unpredictable and with the furor, the red woman points at you, the phantasm mimicking her gesture for theatrics.

You can only stay silent for now as Leila let go of Focus to stand back up, making sure her large blade was kept tightly in its scabbard, her position had shifted as shed faced the Oni with her back to you, which easily reminded you of the various girls you encountered on your journey: proud, true, strong and beautiful.

The blonde stay silent for a few seconds to gaze at you, her eyes traveling up and down your body as she let out a sigh and turn, letting out a small, weak ‘’shut up’’ as she start walking wordlessly, the Shaman make sure to walk out of the way as she calm down from her outburst, she’s going to have a big mess to sort out that’s for sure.

Leila open the door with almost timid energy, only allowing it out halfway and squeezing through without waiting, forcing you to go outside first and helping out Emeth as best you can with the girl feeling her share of guilt due to her uselessness.
However, once you find yourself truly out of the chapel the absolutely staggering amount of magic in the area force on one knee as your struck with vertigo and a strange feeling of disorientation that doesn’t last too long fortunately, you adapt quickly at feeling what amount to a tsunami of pure, raw power.

‘’First time huh?’’

Leila helps you up on your feet as you take a quick glance toward Emeth who is, thankfully, faring better than you are. You’ve never been on a proper battlefield, the civil war of your homeland was a blood and terrific conflict to be sure but it only involved the army, with the vast majority of mages staying out alongside the monster-human orders.

Here? It’s as if the earth itself is waking up and screaming as the pressure inside your body feel like a mischievous constrictor who tighten and let go each time you take a breath.

Battle is joined indeed, while you can’t see anything the clashing of metals and screams even penetrate the thick forest, the Oni’s are running about armed to the teeth, not minding your presence for a moment as you hear several protests about orders and what to do.

You make sure to keep as low a profile as possible, Taking Emeth under your arm as you press forward behind Leila who doesn’t even spare a backyard glance, immediately walking westward of the Chapel into the thick forest, keeping a jogging pace as she effortlessly jump up the dead and felled trees and avoid some wicked looking rocks.

Despite your tiredness, you keep up relatively well, although Emeth quickly overshadowed your Emeth and put herself at your front, you concentrated much more on your progress inside the forest rather than sparing glances toward the obscured battlefield where sometime you’d hear unearthly roars that could only belong to fantastical beasts.

‘’One!’’

Leila suddenly speak out with in a hoarse voice, stopping and almost colliding with Emeth who had a little hard time stopping due to her speed, you hear some rumbling in your vicinity and immediately look up when you hear and see a broken branches falling from one of the tree.
They jump all around you before you can properly identify them, it if weren’t for Leila holding her hand right in your face you’d have embraced Focus right then and there but, given that you still have your head, you deduce that these persons aren’t hostile…yet.

A feminine voice coming at your flank, sounding hoarse and metallic as it escapes a masculine mask depicting an impersonal, humanoid face without much decorum or emotion; it looked very plain if it weren’t for some strange magical lines flashing in and out of existence as random interval.

There’s nothing you can say for now, at least Leila seem to have your back and, frankly, you doubt you’d be able to live if each one of these masked and black robbed person have half the strength of the Purifier who, you see, has now donned her own metallic face guard that light up in a one sided burst of magic coming from the inside, next she don the rest of her uniform that is simply a black hooded cloak, which does give some dapper and intimidation.

More combat? It’s hard resisting to make your emotions appear; at least Emeth is doing it for the both of you as her worried state is clearly displayed across her features.

Leila speak with a strangely control, emotionless voice that sounds hollow and metallic, the distinction is very easy to identify given that you actually know her and when she look back to you, her piercing ocean spheres contain not a single hint of emotions.

You don’t need to say more, as you look around you the identical Purifiers nods to each other’s wordlessly and finally stand up, you only recognize Leila by the blue eyes of the mask and the fact that she walks closer, with Emeth proximity you almost feel like you’re about to be sandwiched.

Again, the same woman speaks with a complete and total care, her voice doesn’t even contain authority and charisma, and it’s a dull tone that could almost belong to someone bored out of their mind.
Leila straightens, putting her clenched fist over her heart, likely a salute of some kind.

‘’Take him back to camp, if our Father up above wills it, we will speak again’’

A silent nod is the only reply of your compatriot, and with grace and talents easily comparable to mantises the Purifiers venture forth into the forest at alarming speed, each one embracing Focus as the thick vegetation engulfs all of them almost simultaneously.
This is the kind of skill that can only be gained through a lifetime of training.

Fantastic summons of creature of yore wreaked havoc inside the well-formed, uniform ranks of the large shielded and sword wielding, armored troops of the crusaders whose mages erected perfect bubbles of shield to negate some of the creatures charges while crossbowmen started riddling the new threats of deadly runic bolts which quickly exploded; that was all you saw, you couldn’t even make out the strategy but you do think Zipangu has an advantage…

One thing for sure, if the Oni’s had charged out they would be in a perfect position to flank either side.

You put your hand on one of the trees the forest has changed from the near tropic to something much more manageable with trees twice as tall and large but also much more spaced with the odd little hill here and there and a few ankle deep swamps.

You move right as you hear it, movement to your right from a camouflaged foe force you to embrace focus and adopt an defensive spell in the form of an awkward shield that is easily broken by the assailant but also enough to give you time to fall back on the floor and escape the side swipe of the blade, the next attack come from above as you watch a Lizard woman plunge toward only to fall upon a shield of gold, not one to stop the girl is it as a springboard to jump to safety, and, the ambush certainly not stopping you hear an angry roar as Emeth kicking back a beast woman, a cross between bear and human with a wicked pair of claws that almost ripped apart half of a tree.

That’s not all, up above enrolled on a tree is a lamia who let go of her arrow that, thankfully lodge itself in your frosted plate armor.

Good thing you have that reflex…

Each of your new foe is clad in blue with half of their faces hidden by a piece of silk, each of them had forgone heavy armors to something more malleable, a mix of cut mails and leathers.

This is one of the diversionary squads belonging to the order of the Shining Knight, they certainly didn’t look shiny at all, they’re eyes red bloodlust and anger, and clearly they’ve lost some people.

With a burst of adrenaline you jump back on your feet and conjure a shield similar to Leila and block the second arrow aimed at your head, all the while giving a large swipe of your other hand where a mace that look more like a cudgel materialize mid swing, thankfully it work at keeping the lizard woman away for a brief second where Emeth close in on you and kick the girl flank all the while successfully evading the return swing.

Thanks to the link, you knew that the grizzly was on its way toward you and you move to intercept; given that Leila is currently busy with the other Lizard woman and archer (who is concentrating on her) you are easily the most apt at dealing with the angry bear whose presence is very much intimidating for her scream resembling much more like the roar of an angry beast.

Given her position she has to maneuver in between some trees which is to your advantage given the little idea your terrain is giving you, while you have to cede the first obstacles you close in fast enough to another set of tree that can be influenced and start casting while looking at the almost 2 meter tall girl with paws as big as your torso, a wall of pure ice form in between trees and you pour as much magic in it while keeping it as translucent and clear as possible, mirroring glass you point toward the bear with your mace, trusting your back to Emeth as you wait for your bait, you’ve got the perfect thing in mind fo-

You prepare to deliver the final strike on your foe as she tries to nurse her wounds when… the shield you brought up for the arrows did not have enough strength in it, it was a simply miscalculation for you’ve gauged the bow and arrows of your serpentine foe, you didn’t expect the runic ammunition to completely penetrate your ice shield, the magic of the Ofuda burned into the ether, perfectly camouflaged by the battlefield and the arrow landed painfully right on your back, in the right side, easily penetrating your plate as its enchantment faded away.

An arrow made for penetration… these knights… really are the best Zipangu has to offer doesn’t it?

Blood quickly trickle out of your mouth as you start to feel strangely cold, Emeth catch an arrow right on her torso but completely shrug it off as she jump and quick away the knight, the runes on her legs explode in midair, create strangely dense smoke and form there you lose vision as hostilities reignite.

At your side the grizzly is alive, not exactly well as she caught a violent explosion but she’ll live even with her grievous wounds, most of her back is torn open but there’s nothing too deep and serious but there’s likely a few fractures here and there.

You see Leila driving her elbow on her foe who taught closing on the range of her flameberge to be a good idea, she follow by a wicked head-butt that, for all intent and purpose, force the knight out of the fight as her nose snap and a few teeth goes flying, the Purifier doesn’t even stop as she recreate another shield toward you but the lamia jump out of the tree and meet her in close combat, preventing her from advancing as the snake skillfully worm out of the way of her large sword.

How can she be so soft and tough?

Then she suddenly close her leg, trapping the knight blade on the inside of her knee and that’s when, thanks to the link you announce your strike to your comrade who stop her following offensive for, already, your sphere is charging right toward the poor girl.

Having some presets is good, because it makes it easier for people to focus, but having the ability to take the third option, as it were, is an important part of both RP gaming and of Siegfried's character.

I would assume so. Other Quest Runners have a similar system going. The last choice is always "Other" or "Write In". Because sometimes the players see a possibility the GM missed. Or perhaps the players want to derail. Either way, that option is present.

I have another question. Those masks, they reek of something similar to a post-hypnotic trigger, mid-tier probably but even then it's a bad omen.

I know the church is willing to sink pretty damn low, but have they gone as far as essentially indoctrinating/programming their purifiers? Our Swag is powerful with Lelia, but can it beat years of hypnotic "therapy"?

The mask works as an emotional dampener, incredibly more pwoerful than Focus it pretty much make the wearer able to perfectly control themselves, but it doesn't rob them of humanity as you saw at the end with Leila.

It doesn't indoctrinate or hypnotise persay, it simply work to increase the efficiency of the wearer in highly volatile environemment where emotions could cloud one judgement ie a battlefield.

Losing a little like with focus isn't much to worry about. A man on a mission has a comparable mindset. But to lose it to the degree implied is a definite step in the wrong direction. You've become something of an automaton. The next step would logically be Hypnotic programming. I do hope the Church hasn't done MK-ULTRA shit as they can't into charm magic like the demons can. You guys need to remember that they are used to fight demons on the frontline where they use charm and emotions against human, alongside corruption to instill lust.

The war in Zipangu is VERY different than what they are used to because the island match them man to man, discipline to discipline, fervor to fervor.

It'd be like Rome metting a foe that is both highly familiar and incredibly foreign at the time.
