You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

talk to the tricia folks, say hello to the preacher, visit dad.

I sort of want to check out the new blacksmith, but it's not important. Also, the tavern keeper, elias was his name maybe? I'd like to say "Hi", he didn't treat us like shit when we lived here.

>talk to the tricia folks, say hello to the preacher, visit dad.

If we get called upon to give another sermon, perhaps we could reuse our recent speech for the First Wood folks who headed for Citadel, about choice and hope.

>I sort of want to check out the new blacksmith, but it's not important. Also, the tavern keeper, elias was his name maybe? I'd like to say "Hi", he didn't treat us like shit when we lived here.

Sounds like a good plan.

Sorry, for cutting it so close, work had me work an extra hour, and traffic was worse than I thought.

You honestly are starting to miss Citadel's presence. Mostly because right now, you're really loathing all forms of civilization and humanity.

The crops are suffering, the area around the Citadel Dome has become a wasteland, and that's the simplest of your problems.

You checked in on First Wood, only to find that Mab had pulled a coup. With no army of over a million strong to serve as a deterrent, the more aggressive members of the Fey Court were willing to run wild. Mab's response was to swiftly take over First Wood, with Julian's help, and allowed all the human and loyalist elves to leave with their lives and the majority of their belongings.

So, you travelled on with 2000 refugees in tow. You arrived in White Tree, and found the gates firmly shut. Paladin NIna Toll informed you that White Tree simply didn't have the food or other amenities to be able to host the refugee crowd, and they had to move on.

Some were willing to go to Stone Hall with you, but some tried to head towards Citadel. Worse, some grabbed what arms they could and started to return to First Wood, in a mad attempt to take back their homes.

You were able to route and convince both groups to return with you and complete the journey to Stone Hall, but it's been a miserable, long, slow, experience.

Currently, you've stopped at River's Crossing. Home. The refugees are behaving themselves, mostly staying in their camp, and at least you're able to get a decent night's sleep in your nest-bed in your own home.

You slide out of bed. Tricia murmurs something and just pulls another fur in the pile over her. You go through the motions of getting some breakfast for the both of you. There's not much kept in the house, but there's some salt pork for the both of you, and clean water for tea.

There's a knock on the door. "Ssen? Tricia? You two up?"

It's Alexander.
>>

Grab some pork and some of that old poison/tasty sap we used to keep around the house. Answer the door while you do this.

"Yeah, we're getting there. Just a minute." You say as you fill a cup with black tar sap.

You use your tail to tug Tricia awake. Grumbling she puts on her usual clothes. "Okay Dad
, we stopped making out. You can come in." She says as she unlocks the door.

"Ha. Ha." Alexander says as he comes in. He smiles at Tricia and hugs her. Tricia's startled for a moment, and then hugs him back. She sniffs a little, but she breaks off and goes back to her tea and seat at the table.

Alexander gets a cup and hot water of his own, and starts his own cup. He's obviously trying to keep calm about this, but you can see the excitement bubbling up in him.

He sits down and takes a deep breath. "So...they're all dead?"
>>
>>25404082
Yes, the Dramatae are all gone. We have their heads in a bag.
>>
>>25404082

"All but the fifth. Me and him aren't really seeing eye to eye now though, what with me flipping his centuries old chessboard and giving him the ol' two finger salute."
>>

I know at least three two-finger salutes, with varying levels of insultingness depending on culture.

"They didn't think fast"

This is the only appropriate answer, I think. Or it at least has to be part of our story.
>>
>>25404175
Seconding this, because that's really how it worked.
>>
>>25404196
Actually shockingly appropriate, given that we fucked destiny with a single lucky arrow.

Didn't even think of that.
>>
>>25404139
"As doornails. Got the heads if you want to see them, also the sword Peace stole from Dad. We got the masks, too. Who knows if they'll stay dead forever, but for now, they're dead." You say.

"How?!" Alexander asks.

"Ssen shot Peace in the chest with a shoulder, and when she screamed and gasped for breath on the ground, stuck in some mud Mage made, she rammed Beacon through her skull." Tricia says.

Alexander shakes his head. "That...was it really that simple?" He sighs. "One lucky arrow does what fifteen people couldn't do? How depressing...may I see the masks, and the sword?"
>>
>>25404082
>so... they're all dead?

Operation snake-bomb: complete success.

Liam's last military operation.
>>
>>25404394
"Logic isn't something that happens to our group, but sure you can see them"
>>
>>25404394
"Of course. Don't touch the masks directly, though."

Hold up the masks, gripping them with cloth.
>>
>>25404394
Peace was surprisingly fragile. I figured whenever the Dramatae fought, Comedy and Tragedy did the dirty work and Peace supplied the magic needed.
>>
>>25404394
"I was surprised myself. None of us expected that to work out that way, but it did. I'll take the masks out now, try not to touch them, the tragedy one was a doozy."

Get the sword, too, while you get the masks out.
>>
>>25404451
In the end, Comedy and Peace were still squishy wizards, and too overconfident in their plot-armor to protect themselves properly.
>>
>>25404394
"We completely broke the array first though. It would have been impossible to finish it with one lucky arrow if destiny was still around."
>>
>>25404463
>Get the sword, too, while you get the masks out.

We ought to test out the sword a bit. Stand back a bit and swing it, and see if it'll light on fire for us like it did for the Dramatae.

We might also try touching Beacon and Soma together.
>>
>>25404394

"I think Peace was trying to do something but couldn't before the arrow hit. Probably would have been a harder fight if she had managed it"

Show him the masks and sword
>>
>>25404487
>"We completely broke the array first though. It would have been impossible to finish it with one lucky arrow if destiny was still around."

(When did this happen, anyway? We talked about it.)
>>
>>25404451
Tragedy was a screamer. He screeched every time we bit him.
>>25404472
I think Comedy was a rogue of some sort. Tragedy probably was probably an evasion tank if Rage wasn't anything more than the tactician.
>>
>>25404492
dude, soma is made out of corrupted coins. It might be... not right.
>>
>>25404511

Appropriate way to kill a villain:
Competing speeches, big final battle.
Ssen's way:
Suprise attack, repeated shankings.
>>
>>25404394
"We also killed destiny."

Because we should probably get around to talking this out at some point, and Alexander seems least likely to yell at us for it.
>>
>>25404533
I remember we visited the Fifth and the array, but we couldn't destroy it. When are you saying we "killed destiny", other than figuratively?
>>
>>25404569
Ssen's actions are the direct cause of the array breaking for good. The Fifth said as much the last time we talked to him, just before screaming in impotent rage.
>>
>>25404533
we didn't kill destiny, we BROKE it.

subtle difference.

it's one of those monster/construct things.
>>
>>25404501
We don't know exactly when. We didn't see the array much. Our actions just gradually eroded it until it was too much.
>>
>>25404630
So destiny is a construct and the corpse ball is a monster?
>>
>>25404394
"Well, not quite that simple. There was a complicated plan involving disguise and subterfuge, rescuing her illuminated self, and accidentally breaking the machinations of destiny."

"But that's basically it."

>>25404649
yes.

or two.
>>
"I was surprised myself. None of us expected that to work out that way, but it did. I'll take the masks out now, try not to touch them, the tragedy one was a doozy." You say as you gingerly lay the alternate Tragedy mask, Comedy, and Peace's pierced mask on the table, using a cloth to carry them. "We completely broke the Array first though. It would have been impossible to finish it with one lucky arrow if destiny was still around."

Alexander looks up. "Tallow talked about that. So...it was true?"

Tricia nods.

"I suppose I need to apologize to him...eventually." He sighs.

You carefully put Soma on the table. Alexander picks it up and looks at it. He shakes his head. "This should be your Father's second sword...but I suppose it never was." He puts it back on the table.

"So, the news is unclear. Some people are saying that Citadel disappeared, and some say that it was sealed away." He gestures to you. "Please, let me know from someone who was there. What happened? Are the people safe?"
>>
>>25404690
They're only one step below gods, and killing god sounds more impressive.

Or we could say that we killed paradise and piss everybody off.
>>
>>25404709
"Well, to be blunt: Men of rope, twine, and stone arose from the detritus of the city and built a living wall of flesh and stone that completely encapsulates the city, sky included.

I'm more than a little worried about the people inside."
>>
>>25404709
It curled up in a ball after I killed Peace, the people are trapped inside along with the army.
>>
>>25404709
Without Peace around to direct it Citadel has apparently ceased to be a land spirit, and is more like an... egg. Inside it are all the citizens and all the army and all the Paladins. From what I understand they are apparently well taken care of. They will not want for food or pleasure. Nor will they die. Citadel loves its inhabitants after all. It will take a great deal of preperation to venture inside as all the magic it had spread across the land is now concetrated solely on Citadel.
>>
>>25404709
"It picked up it's ball and went home. It's content to just sit there, completely sealed off for the moment. Either way, it isn't going to take over the world like Rage predicted it would, so we don't need to rush about like it's the end of the world anymore."
>>
>>25404709
"I think Citadel still cares for it's people. They should be safe for now.
>>
>>25404709
"Citadel completely sealed itself off. All the people inside should be safe in their fake paradise, but we'll want to work out a plan for freeing them later."
>>
>>25404709
>"So, the news is unclear. Some people are saying that Citadel disappeared, and some say that it was sealed away." He gestures to you. "Please, let me know from someone who was there. What happened? Are the people safe?"

"It took its toys and went home. Built a dome around itself, made out of people, and trapped everyone inside to use as building materials and playthings. It doesn't threaten the outside world anymore, but we still need to save the people inside."
>>
>>25404709

"Knowing Citadel, they are safe. For certain values of safe. The city has completely sealed itself off, and I wouldn't recommend touching the wall, but none of the inhabitants should suffer any sort of physical harm."
>>
>>25404709
>"I suppose I need to apologize to him...eventually." He sighs.

I think that would mean a great deal to Tallow. We should talk to him, next time we're in his neck of the woods.
>>
"It took its toys and went home. Without Peace around to direct it, Citadel has apparently ceased to be a land spirit, and is more like an... egg. It doesn't threaten the outside world anymore, but we still need to save the people inside." You say.

He nods. "Alright, and are these refugees from Citadel who managed to escape?"

Tricia shakes her head. "That's a long story. The only escapees that we're sure of are ourselves and Her Illuminated Self. And don't get me started on her." She shakes her head. "These people are all from First Wood. There was some unpleasantness there and they needed to be relocated."

"What kind of unpleasantness?" Alexander asks.

"Politics, and elves." Tricia says with a sigh.

He nods. "Ah. Of course. Two things that often cause headaches. I suppose that means that Julian is around here somewhere." He frowns. "He and I did not get along."

"Dad, did you get along with ANY of Uncle Liam's group?" Tricia asks.

"Liam and I got on splendidly." He says. "But...well...you know us druids. We're not that great with crowds...usually." He gestures to his daughter. "But you've always been different."

"Yeah, I met dear Auntie." She snarls. "I understand a lot now." She holds up a hand at his startled face. "Reanimated corpse, we dealt with her."

He drums his fingers on the table, still looking at Soma. "So, do you have a plan, after you take care of these people? Any idea on where to begin with the Citadel 'Egg' as you call it?"
>>
>>25404947
"Well, we have the mirrors, and we found the Grand Seal; that seems like the right solution, except we need some way to prevent ourselves from becoming walls and cobblestones before we can use them."
>>
>>25404947
"I plan to crack it. Once we make a way in, we can get in contact with the people inside and work at changing things. No idea how we'll do that though, who knows how this magic stuff works."
>>
>>25404947
"The Refugees are headed to Stone Hall. With the Egg, current inkling of a plan is to get the mirrors, that's what the lantern metal was for, and get into the Egg via the Dramatae's teleportation network."
>>
>>25404947
"Tell it a yolk?"
>>
>>25404947
We need enchantments or potions to deal with its mind control. And to be able to fight through a city that can shift and change its terrain at will and control its inhabitants. We need to be able to reach its Heart or set up a spell around it to limit its influence even further.

And if the dreams I had before all this went down... Citadel really, really doesn't like me.
>>
>>25404947
"The Grand Seal is still an option, and I think Mage still has some idea where to start once we get in. But I think the first move has to be preparing on the outside. That includes getting the rest of the Kingdom back on its feet, as well as getting ourselves ready to go in."

"Because Citadel tried to corrupt me personally in the Grove, and I don't want to run the risk of any one of us having to deal with the same threat."
>>
>>25405002
>And if the dreams I had before all this went down... Citadel really, really doesn't like me.

Though, oddly enough, it was willing to negotiate/plead with/whine at Ssen to try to get her to take over for Peace.
>>
>>25405028
it might still be willing for that, if we get into citadel's influence.

Bring potions.
>>
>>25405028
It was willing to do that as long as we gave in to its control, at which point it would never make good on its promises. It fundamentally cannot be trusted.
>>
>>25405028
That's because it was scared for it's life. It assumed we were going to straight up destroy it rather than just kill it's mother.

Though it does leave the issue of how we destroy citadel without letting The Fifth in. I find the idea of anything having that much power to be abhorrent, regardless of any sense of morality it possesses. I'll always oppose the 'Free Citadel' option.
>>
how are we going to get the light in there if we use the teleportation network?

We'll need some breeching method in the wall, or some artificial light that actually works.
>>
>>25405142
>We'll need some breeching method in the wall

I'm really hoping the wall doesn't start bleeding when we do that.
>>
>>25405157

"Well, we have the mirrors, and we found the Grand Seal; that seems like the right solution, except we need some way to prevent ourselves from becoming walls and cobblestones before we can use them." No idea how we'll do that though, who knows how this magic stuff works.

"Maybe I'll tell it a yolk?" You say.

Alexander and Tricia both groan in horror.

"Just feed it one of your pun speeches." Tricia says. "That would make anything yield, out of sheer terror and pain."

You smile at Tricia. "But, in all seriousness, we will need enchantments or potions to deal with its mind control. And to be able to fight through a city that can shift and change its terrain at will and control its inhabitants. We need to be able to reach its Heart or set up a spell around it to limit its influence even further. Mage may have some ideas, but I think the first move has to be preparing on the outside. Tricia shrugs. "It can wait in line like the rest."

Alexander nods. "Well, at least you have an idea of what plan you need to make." He shrugs. "Liam and I had times where we started off as worse. What did he call them? Ah, right. Plan's of His Light...because only His Light knew what the plan was." He nods. Then he knocks on the table. "Well, you have things to do, and I'm keeping you from them, as well as your breakfast."

He kisses Tricia on the top of her head when he gets up and nods at you. "Oh, Father Uriah is holding a mass at the camp. He's doing his usual routine."

"Thanks Dad." Tricia says.

He nods and leaves.

"The kingdom's really shifting, isn't it?" Tricia says as the two of you finish up breakfast. "Oh, speaking of shifting. I finally got this trick down." She holds out her arm. It ripples for a moment, you see her swarm-flesh, then it ripples again, and instead of her arm, there's a scorpion stinger. "Poisonous too, not as strong as your stuff, but enough to give humans trouble." She closes her eyes and shifts it back. "Give me long enough and I could maybe make extra arms, or even a tail." Just because she's wearing the pants in the relationship doesn't mean she's the top.

She can only do that with the leash and we'll only allow that if she gets wings
>>
>>25405906
TMI, TMI!
>>
...are you scared of flying?
>>
>>25405450
"Sure, Tricia. Sure. No wings at all." You say. "Is there a reason why you're so against wings? If it's more likely to make you go insane, I'm willing to go without."

The two of you leave the house and head towards the refugee camp. "It's a bunch of reasons." She says. "The first is that I'd have to ruin a lot of my nicer clothes and armor. The second is that unless I develop or generate a dozen new muscles and lose a lot of muscle mass, I won't be able to DO anything with them. They'll just flutter and I wont get an inch off the ground...you make ONE weight joke..." She warns. "And finally, if a person has wings they should be majestic things of feathers. Mine would be like a dragonfly or a fly's. I can't DO butterfly wings, not unless you want me to turn into a caterpillar for a few months." She shrugs. "Plus, those things would be so fragile, and have I given you enough reasons, already?"

You see Uriah on a soap box, with Lea and Mage, at his side. He's leading the mass of people in his favorite songs 'Crush the Darkness' that goes into a rollicking claaping song that he made up called 'Purge the Hateful.'

"Should we be disturbed that our childhood spiritual authority brought us up on a steady diet of cheerful songs that condone violence in His Light's name?" Tricia asks.
>>
>>25405944
>"Should we be disturbed that our childhood spiritual authority brought us up on a steady diet of cheerful songs that condone violence in His Light's name?" Tricia asks.

While clapping: "Yes, deeply disturbed. But it's so *catchy*!"
>>

"Of course not, they're the most exciting. We might have to get Lea to write some slightly less violent ones, though. "

You know, with Tricia effectively immortal like Ssen at this point, if she wanted to spend a few months in a cocoon after we retire, she could. Her call, though.

But if we figure out the flight thing for Mumei, let's make sure everyone else who wants to can try it.

Smile and bob cheerfully to the music. "A few days ago, I put my spear in a woman's brain for the sake of His Light. We missed our chance to question our upbringing a loooong time ago."

You nod as you clap along. "Probably, buut we turned out okay. Uriah at least seems to be reasonable about it, but not everyone will probably be as judicious as he is about what constitutes monsters and darkness. "But, yes, those are plenty of good reasons. Thanks for that anatomy lesson, Dragonfly. I'm still going to taunt you about them, though. And I think Dragonfly wings are pretty."

Tricia punches you in the shoulder. "Don't...don't call me Dragonfly." She blushes and looks away. "I'm saving that nickname for someone else."

Uriah finishes, and he gives the whole group a large blessing and benediction. He gets off his box and comes to you. He hugs both you and Tricia.

"It's always a blessing to have you visit." He says. "I'm not used to such a big audience."

"Why did you come out here to the sticks, Father?" Tricia asks. "If you don't mind me asking."

The man shrugs and scratches his thinning salt and pepper hair. "Never felt at home in the Grand Cathedral, kept getting paper cuts from the Books of Teachings." He smiles and shrugs. "So one day, I packed up my hobby clocks, and set out. I was planning on going to Stone Hall, but my wagon threw a wheel here, I came to the town, and saw that your clock was broken. I took it as a sign of His Light." He nods. "A silly story, that I've romanticized over the years. I don't think the clock was broken the day I came here, actually...but people enjoy stories like that." He shrugs. "Best of luck on your journey. I know it can't be easy traveling with so many."

Because the method that allows Ssen and Tricia to have a child only works that way.

{Cai Wei Zhe? Just what is a Phoenix Empire native doing way out here?} You ask.

She starts and spins around her eyes wide and you see a hand go behind her back. {You sing?! How?! You're a serpent...} She shakes her head. {Apologies. I was...not expecting this.} Her hand comes back out. {But, yes...yes, you sang my name correctly.} It's obvious that she's not too pleased with this. You've thrown her for a loop. {Tell me, where did you learn how to sing? And the Noble's Song as well...I thought that your Nursery Cages that taught our notes only sang to you in the tones of the Common Song?}

I've never been in a Nursery Cage. Or any kind of cage, for that matter.

I was taught it by a friend.
>>
>>25408320
{I'm friends with Princess Mumei, I learned the tongue from her and the books she had with her. She had the same surprise you did when I became fluent.}

(what did the princess call us? The bird who wanted to be reborn a serpent? it would be important to mention to blacksmith lady)
>>
>>25408320
{I had some most interesting books to read. And I'd long since left the nest before learning to sing. How about you? You've flown a long way from your nest.}

Let's not tell her about Princess Mumei until after we feel her out about it, given that Mumei said some of the things she's done (like designating diplomats, or wanting to fly) are not exactly allowed back home.
>>
Let's be careful -- might be best to avoid mentioning Princess Mumei's name. Is news of her arranged marriage to Isen widely known?
>>
>>25408320
{I've guided the flight of a noble or two in my time, and not all of them were from the local flocks. They were polite enough to bear with me as I learned, and I dare say more shocked than you.}
>>
If it disturbs her then we should drop the phoenix tongue.
>>
>>25408409
>>25408408
She'd be suspicious oh how we learned it, the Noble tongue especially. Not something we can just write off easily.
>>25408427
She's only as surprised as Mumei was.
>>
We should see if we can pull her to stone hall if we befriend here.
>>
So, do you want to tell Cai Wei Zhe about Mumei? (And it's sai-wei-zei) Seeing a split here.
>>
>>25408479
I vote for simply saying "A friend."
>>
>>25408479
I think we should just say "we've escorted nobles in the past"

or something similar. No names.
>>
>>25408479
I'd like to avoid it for a moment, at least, and talk to her about what brings her here. If it sounds like she's a die-hard Empire citizen and a fan of their cage, let's not; if she flew the coop like Mumei, on the other hand, perhaps.

So: let's talk more first.
>>
>>25408479
I prefer to tell her the truth of how we learned the language, but the tales of how the empire works makes me cautious.

Still would tell her about Mumei
>>
>>25408498
That's still too revealing. How many Phoenix Empire nobles are on this continent?
>>
>>25408479
Nope. We have no specific reason to mistrust her, but then again, we have no reason to trust her either.
>>
>>25408520

I'd prefer to as well, but we can afford to be a little more cautious until we hear her story.

if she really agreed with with how things worked there would she immigrate her?

>>25408525

>>
>>25408556
I can't say why should would be here.
>>
>>25408479
Nah. We don't have to tell her about Mumei. We can just say that a friend introduced us and we got to becoming friends. All true.
>>
play it cautious and dont mention Mumei
>>
look guys, worse case scenario is she is an assassin after mumei.

And if that's the case, she already knows the paladin serpent was seen with Isen and mumei way back VERY publically.
>>
>>25408556
>if she really agreed with with how things worked there would she immigrate her?

True; that does seem like the most likely explanation. She's probably trying to pass as a native of this continent, and doing a pretty good job given that nobody happened to mention the new smith was from the Phoenix Empire.

{I take it that you didn't intend for anyone to know your origins? You speak as well as you sing; I almost didn't notice, and I doubt others would.}
>>
>>25408479
Just say that we spent some time with the Ambassador when we were at Citadel.
>>
{I had some most interesting books to read. And I'd long since left the nest before learning to sing. How about you? You've flown a long way from your nest.} You ask.

She shrugs. {I grew tired of my little nest, and wished to see the world. I was no fan of great cities, so I travelled and found my place here. I have skill in the fires and talon forging. So I live here, for now, until the winds blow me free again.}

>Huh, it takes you a second look to realize that she's a Phoenix Empire native. Also, she speaks Citadel tongue better than Mumei does.
>>
>>25408762
So that's a confirmation on the differing physical characteristics, although they were subtle enough that we didn't notice them at first. The fact that she speaks Citadel tongue well doesn't tell us anything, and the point about the names pretty much throws any theory about her attempting to hide her heritage out the window.
>>
>>25408651
Does the Phoenix Empire want Mumei dead THAT badly? I mean this woman is either a scout, a spy or an assassin, im leaning towards the last one.

Your eyes spot a glow coming from her back. She was carrying something magical and she was reaching for it when she was startled.

Cai doesn't look Phoenix when you look at her just quick or in passing. She wears Citadel clothing, her skin is tanned, and her hair is in a Citadel regular style. It's only when you look at her again and see her eyes, and the fact that her stance is slightly different as well, that you realize her origin. She's blended in very well. You know from Mumei that her not changing her name is a normal thing, it's unthinkable for a Phoenix Empire citizen to EVER change their Name Song. So she lives with being called Sideways, and laughs it off as a joke...you assume.

{Well, I have places to be, and you need your privacy.} She nods and bows at you. {Farewell, Serpent.}

{Farewell, talon shaper.}

I have no idea what the appropriate name for that is, but yeah.

Also, I wonder if she made that magical trinket herself. That could be some REAL good smithin'.

Could be a highly competent and trained agent.

While she may not be here to assassinate Mumei, she could be here to scope out the whole Citadel situation. Or perhaps she was here for a fairly long time (sometime after the last blacksmith got kicked out for being an asshat), and was sent here to act as a covert observer or to do stuff for her superiors overseas.

It may be safe to assume that there are more of her ilk around the land, if my suspicions are correct.

As always, the wind is your only response.

You turn to walk away, but you pause and turn. "Oh, your granddaughter might be named Ember."

You head back to town, and you stop by the blacksmith. Soma in hand. Cai is there, she's making the raw flint rocks into proper sized and shaped stones for sale. She starts again at your presence, and then relaxes.

The forge is nice. It doesn't seem to have changed much since the asshole left. You see one of those little feather weather charms hung from the roof, but that's the only hint of Cai's origin.

We're going to need one of the masks, too, to uncorrupt the lantern metal in Soma.

Let's go ahead and tell her a bit of the background here: Soma is made of corrupted Lantern metal, and the mask is made of uncorrupted pure metal; we'd like to get the combination turned into something we can actually use.

Or, how about something Tricia or Mari/Peri could actually use?

"This metal is amazing." She says. "May I?" She takes Soma and strikes it against the stone. It makes the usual ringing noise. She smiles. "It sings." She frowns as she holds it. "The balance is a little poor due to the handle being warped, and the edges are in horrid condition. Whomever had this blade in their possession did not care for this. A shame." She hands it back to you. "The smith did good work, a shame about the metal and the wear. Would...would you like to see some suggestions on the blade? Anything but a katana. Please no.

Cai nods at your smile and holds up a finger as she goes to check something in the back of your shop.

Damn, scrolls...they get everywhere. You decide to forgive decorum and put one in your mouth as you get them organized.

There we go. Now you can get back on the tr-Hang on.

You take the scroll out of your mouth, and you lick your lips with your tongue.

You unroll the scroll. It's just as Cai said it was, a simple diagram of a Phoenix Empire axe, with a few smithing marks and notes. However...you lick the paper.

You know that taste. Hell, your tongue burns at the memory, and your shoulder throbs. That's Glass Scorpion venom.

You stick your tongue in each of the scrolls just lightly. It's on each of them.

You remember a tale that Isen told you. It was about something called 'Inheritance Powder.' It's where you take a poison, and you grind it very very fine, into a thin dust. Then you carefully paint the dust onto a book you know the person will read, or you slip it into tea, or make it so it comes in contact with the target some other way.

They don't die. Rather, they just slowly, ever so slowly, become ill. Then all it takes is a decent cold, or just a little bit more inheritance powder, and only His Light would be able to know that they were sent on their Journey by someone else's hand.

Glass Scorpion venom's one of the best for making Inheritance Powder. Unquestionably lethal, so the potency doesn't weaken from time or the refinement, and just a trace amount will work. A bit more and you would have been throwing up, but for this amount, it just makes your tongue tingle. You don't want to think what it would do to a human.

This bitch wanted you, the Dawnchasers, and Quentin to pour over these things!

you need to have low doses taken over a VERY long period of time to build resistances to venom.

ie the guys that are resistant to rattlesnake venom have been injecting themselves with tiny doses for at a minimum 5-10 years.

dont tip our hand, and when we do go for a bite with the Black for paralysis.

"These plans are coated in glass scorpion venom! Do not test me, blacksmith, for I have given terrible deaths for people much more powerful than you for lesser crimes. You tell me everything, now."

She looks confused for a moment. Then she winces and slaps her face. "Oh, stupid. Stupid. Stupid!" She groans. "Grandfather, you miserable old corpse!" She shakes her head. "Ugh. I am SO sorry." She points to the scrolls. "I just gave you my grandfather's old schematics, and I...I din't think. I didn't remember." She sighs and shrugs. "You, the one who keeps freaking out at the very SIGHT of me. Give me one good reason why I should believe you."

In any event, I think this highlights the fact that the other Paladins, Mumei, and Isen should be on the lookout for potential assassins. It'd be all too easy to remove the last few vestiges of authority outside Citadel.

Maybe send runners. For that matter, Mab should know too.
>>
"Fair enough. But one last question before I read this bird: what was it behind your back earlier?" You ask.

"May I reach back and show it to you?" She asks.

You nod.

She pulls out a small dagger. "It's for protection. When...when someone comes up to you and says the Noble's Song." She sniffs and shakes her head. "It's safer to have something to convince people you aren't worth the trouble."

Gently you remove the scroll from the bird and read it. It's in Phoenix Script, but you can read it.

To be fair, nobody ever remember half the fucking sense abilities we've got.
>>
>>25412110
Occasionally, sometimes, goodguys get burned for being trusting.

It happens.

Next time we check their heartbeat patterns and scent if we suspect a lie. Learn from mistakes.
>>
>>25412107
i said scent for lies, but it was like 10 seconds before a new update so i guess echo missed it.

should have caught her in the second lie in that it was a rather generic axe plan according to the description, hardly a secret.

>>

Y'know assassins usually DONT let their marks find them out and live to tell the tale right, she probably has a toxin pill on her for quick suicides as to avoid spilling info.
>>
>>25412107
We didn't forget.

Also, I was all for waiting until she sent the bird. Because that's how you do it: you let the spy report, THEN bag them.

I picked a hell of a time to go out for pizza.
>>
>>25412157
shit, that's even more hardcore.

If she does that, I owe you a coke. Or some poison sap. I'm not sure how it works here.
>>
Hell will we get a roll to see if we can track the bitch down?
>>
>>25412198
Really depends how good she is. also whether or not she knows a whole lot about lamias.
>>
>>25412219
She knows we're scary as shit and fast as shit
>>
>>25412181
No she is either gonna disappear or be dead if we corner her. A person like this sounds like someone whom is in a death pact for the duration of their missions. After all you dont just travel across the planet to faff about for your government/assassin clan/whatthefuckever her organization is.
>>
"Thank goodness I've at least got you to tell me when I'm an idiot." You say. You flick out your tongue.

Peri looks at you. "Do you taste licorice?"

Your eyebrows go up. How did she know?

"Anise oil...ohhh ho ho. She's good." Peri nods. "No wonder you walked out of there alive."

"So, so she was trying to kill us?" Tricia asks as she concentrates.

Peri shakes her head. "No, she wanted to weaken us. If she wanted us dead, then someone like this wouldn't try something so indirect as inheritance powder." Peri says. "You use that if you want to soften a hardened group, or if you know you can regularly deliver a dosage to the victim without suspicion." She nods. "It was probably just to weaken us, make us easier for when the kill order DOES come in." Peri paces. "She just didn't know that Ssen's immune and has better poison senses than humans." She nods. "I'm hoping she does what I would do now."

"Which is what?" Lea asks, her and Mage having joined.

"Go to a safe house that's nearby." She says. "Hide out for a while to determine if my cover's been compromised or not. If it is, make a break for it. If it appears that my cover is still intact, return to the town, acting like I've been gone on a fishing trip or something."

"You know a lot about this." Mage says.

"I know." Peri nods. "But she isn't going to be paying attention to the bugs that she's squatting with. We've got another trick or seven up our sleeves. THAT'S how you win THIS game."

"Can't believe we had an assassin living in our town for this long." Tricia mutters.

"She's not an assassin." Peri says. "She's a spy. Big difference."

Incorrect. She's presumably sent a bird suggesting that she almost had her cover blown, so now would be the time to nab her.

After all, we can't be here feeding her false info all the time.

Peri shakes her head. "Never leave a spy unattended. You uncover one, you grab them."

"You know, she COULD have just stepped out." Lea says.

"Found her!" Tricia says. "Heh, Anise Oil trail made it easier for me. I love licorice." She grins.

"Well, where is she?" Lea asks.

"Where do you think?" Tricia says. "She's hiding in the ruins of Bright Tower."

Peri nods. "Smart. Safe, secure, and easy enough to justify your presence in case of a random passerby." She grins. "This is going to be fun, Ssen. Now you're going to see MY kind of hunting."

Well she is clearly a master of spies and assassins. And she has been using us to either
A) Destabilize the Kingdom for either her or the Empire's benefit, which worked BEAUTIFULLY by the way.
OR
B) Set up a hiding place to get away from her highly abusive family members.
Either way we are probably going to wind up killing her, so lets get prepared for that now.

>>
>>25412461
I have a 6am work day tomorrow, so I'm going to call it tonight. Tomorrow, June 13th 4-6pm (Job & Traffic willing) we'll continue our spy games!

I'll give you this, Mumei is on your side. No question. She's never been working for the Empire, and she's loyal to you and Isen for her legs and her freedom, respectively.

Oh, I'm going to have FUN with this. My advice? Watch 'Burn Notice' and take notes.

I mean I NAMED her 'Sideways' for His Light's sake!
>>
>>25412565
echo, we were having enough trouble integrating all these peasants.

Now we have SPIES in our peasants.

Spies and peasants isn't a happy combination. Spies and peasants aren't chocolate and peanut butter, echo. You can't just mix them like that, it's crazy.

I love these constant threads though. See you tomorrow.

I hope you are prepared for us failing entirely to be spies. it's not one of our modes at the moment, we'll have to learn as we go.
>>
>>25412565
I figured as much. She doesn't seem the spymistress type, what with her obvious history as a "caged bird". I doubt she would have had the confidence for it before we met her.

Tomorrow, Echo. Tomorrow we shall play that most dangerous of games.
>>
>>25412565

When your a paladin, sometimes things get a little messy. Keep you head, make some bad puns, and come up with a terrible plan.

That's why people appoint spymasters, good thing you have an ex-gurellia freedom fighter with you.

His Light works in strange ways, and The Grand Phoenix's flight path is known only to the Grand Phoenix.
>>

Appointing a spy-master is right along those lines.

well, AFTER the hunt I mean. We're totally hunting the most(?) dangerous game.

Either that or dragons.
>>
>>25412565
If this is the case we are grilling her like a fish when we see her again. We NEED to find out
A) What the PE is sending spies out here for.
B) How PE assassins operate, we ARE going to be facing them soon since we let that letter go.
>The assassins use EVERYONE that hates us against us. DEAR FUCKING GOD we are probably going to lose someone to them.
C) How the armies of the PE are set up, what their training is and how good they operate in harsh terrain, since they will invade from the desert.
>TFW you remember the mapping anon from last thread asking if anyone lived on that goddamned peninsula in the far south, and Echo brushing it off the way he did to make it sound suspicious. Echo you are a dirty fucking git and a GODLY GM!!!!!!!!!!!!
D) How their political structure works and what we have to do/whom we have to kill to get their armies to either kill each other or retreat.

AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER SHIT I CANT THINK OF!
We are sooooooo fucked.
>>
>>25412565
Night Echo, and oh dear god now spies everywhere, as if we where not paranoid enough.

the fact that the axe plans where so simple, yet where a "guarded secret" probably should have set off some alarms for us too, but we all forgot about that bit due to the excitement from the venom.

I figured Mumei was an outcast of sorts and the name somewhat confirms that for me, so spymaster was already out without the hint.
>>
>>25412710
The fact that she was CARRYING THE "CLOSELY GUARDED" PLANS around when she claimed to be a traveler to a foreign lands should have REALLY set us off.
>>
>>25412710
>>25412704
the real question I think:

Who is better spies.

Elves or ninjas.
>>
>>25412765
well, we needed to change gears.

We WERE used to dealing with brain controlled sleeper cells.

NOW we're dealing with trained non-mind controlled folk.
>>
Oh god we're just going to become so fucking paranoid now and echo is probably going to trip us up again...

TT_TT
>>
>>25412773
which means we have to fight competent people, ala similar to Robin's crew.

this cannot end well.
>>
>>25412704
We can do this. We can unite the peasants and fight off the Phoenix Empire at one shot. We just have to control the narrative. Just like the Dramatae did.

If we cast the Phoenix Empire as the Villianous Invaders and Isen as the Valiant king, Mumei as the Defector from Decadence, and The Dawnchasers and the other paladins as the Heroes, we can create an us-vs-them situation and unite the peasants under Isen's banner. Just like what the Dramatae told those in Citadel that we were the bad guy.
>>
>>25412806
yep! Their soldiers aren't held in place by masks of pain, either, but by hostage peasant villages.

The hard part hasn't even BEGUN yet!
>>
>>25412565
>Burn Notice
So that means Isen is being played by Bruce Campbell?
>>
>>25412882
I never watched burn notice.

This is going to be a terrible time for me.
>>
>>25412894
Just go and read a wiki about it. You should be fine.
>>
>>25412894
It has its moments, especially in the earlier seasons.
I remember /k/ classifying it as somewhat of an OPERATOR show.

Wait this just hit me. In the latest Lamia Child Quest Q&A Ssen, and Caligo Clarus, were confirmed for being SAS.
And now Echo is pulling some cloak&dagger shit on us.
I guess this is what happens when you let a snake-like creature into your paladin order.

Personally, I am looking forward to our next opportunity to operate operationally in anti-Phoenix Empire operations.

Also, when we get to Bright Tower, we should break down the door and "sing" { Honey, I'm home! }
>>
>>25412933
I guess I'll catch up on my spymanship. I still hope peri's spying is more spyish than the phoenix empire's spying.

I mean, we're technically better manhunters in a literal fashion, but she's much better at... finding people.
>>
>>25412827
That machine is destroyed, there is no more "narrative" to control. We are just as likely to get one shot by a random assassin as Peace became when we blew up the Machine in the Gods damned first place.
>>
>>25412993
"You chose the wrong tower to take shelter in, motherfucker."

>>
>>25413159

I hope the empire wasn't watching us too closely during that week we defeated the dramatae- we have a lot of cards that may or may not be hidden.
>>
>>25413196
now now, she's not dumb, she's just ignorant. It's one of our strongest points, people don't know much about dealing with us.
>>
>>25413210
She betrayed the trust of a Paladin who makes god-Cities curl up in a ball and cry.

That sounds dumb to me. Either that or her intel is bad, in which case she's not just dumb but also really bad at her job.
>>
>>25413229
like I said, I think it's just a classic case of "You don't know who you're dealing with!"
>>
>>25413275
She's in the intelligence business, it's her JOB to know.
>>
>>25413275
If she doesnt know then she is the WORST spy in the world. This literally does not add up, what with her professionalism, smarts and CLEARLY proven experience with intelligence work. She know most everything about us, this is why she showed up in our hometown, to question all of our friends neighbors and relatives about the "Famous Paladin Serpent", to determine how much of a threat we really are. The fact that she is sicking the hounds on our asses is proof that we are a colossal threat to the Empire's plans both here and back in the actual Empire itself.
This bitch WILL be mind-raped for information and then disposed of. Dont trust her words, get at her Gods damned memories.
Get word to Purple Sands, they WILL be having company in the near future. Set up ambushed in the Desert, check ALL of the local tribes for those whom are disloyal, get everyone prepared, stock up on food, weapons and siege supplies, and get hunkered down NOW. We have negative time left before this gets started.
Also ferret out PE spies out of our friend and close circle. PALADIN BALLES IS TO BE ARRESTED, he clearly works for them, what with his "list" having been soooooo far off the mark.
>>
>>25413333
is it so much to ask for another robin who knows better than to play hardball with us?

Softball is more fun for everyone.
>>
>>25413333
And clearly, she doesn't.

That's why we're on our way now.
>>
>>25413443
look dude, I know you have a mind rape fetish, but try to keep it out of the game. That's not even an established thing you can do here.
>>
>>25413454
In a setting with magic, all high level spies have SOME kind of mind altering enchantments on them. The PE doesnt fuck around with this kind of stuff, CLEARLY so now that we have established that they want to kill all of the Dawnchasers and try to stop us for completing our work of freeing the planet from land-spirits and their ilk.
We are either gonna wind up torturing it out of her or mind-raping her for all of her fucking knowledge. In this case torture takes too gods damned long, so lets use the expedient option shall we?
>>
>>25413443
This isn't blatant fetish quest. Nobody in our party knows HOW to mindrape, and most of them were selected in no small part because they WOULDN'T mindrape even if they knew how.

We will handle preparation in due time, because believe it or not it takes some time to prepare an invasion armada. Also, the majority of Citadel's former sheeple still don't trust us.

This situation calls for a level of calm, coordination, and forethought that you clearly lack.
>>
>>25413505
yeah, no. We're not going to be mind raping people. Not going to torture people, either, since that doesn't really work nearly as people think.

The fact that I have to debate whether we will be developing brain rape technology with you alone means that you should reconsider your views.
>>
>>25413505
>>25413443
calm the fuck down and go take a time out. This isn't even useful evil, it's petty, vindictive, unfounded, and dangerous.
>>
>>25413527
>>25413537
>>25413547
Right so the spy, yknow the one that just tried to fucking poison everyone in the fucking party, and mark them as targets for assassins to kill is CLEARLY just going to give up all of her contact info willingly and quiet give in to all of our demands right?
Yeah no. We need to get this info NOW!!! The longer we wait the more likely we have to deal with assassins that pop up out of fucking nowhere and try to kill Tricia or Lea or Mage or Granny or the kids. Or even worse ALL of them at once. I dont know about you idiots but i want that information NOW, last year if it possible.
>>
>>25413609
Yes, I know, lives are at stake. It doesn't change the fact that you want to not only commit atrocities, you want to commit atrocities that don't even exist.
>>
>>25413609
And we will get information. We will do so in a way that is consistent with the character and what is POSSIBLE in the setting.

You need to step away from the keyboard for a while.
>>
>>25413623
let's not even get into the proven unreliability of torture, the known unreliability of magic, the historic unreliability of purple occuli truth detection spells, the fact that mage doesn't actually know any of those spells...
>>
>>25413623
WELCOME TO THE FUCKING SPY BUSINESS!!!!
Sorry to burst your bubble but we dont really have any options right now. We NEED that info, and this bitch will NOT give it to us willingly, so we have to get it out of her in any way we can. If that involves torture, so fucking be it.
This kind of shit happens all of the time in the intelligence world. She is a spy, she has been captured, and she WILL give up that gods damned info even if we have to tear off every gods damned one of her limbs to start off with.
>>
>>25413609
Hardly anyone knows Granny or the kids EXIST outside of our group, let alone where to find them. And given how Granny routinely hands our ass to us, I think she can handle herself. Tricia, Lea, Mage, and Mari/Peri are never out of our sight anyway, and we don't pick our companions carelessly enough that they wouldn't be able to handle a would-be assassin.

>>
>>25413704
There is a difference between mooks that you hire to kill someone for you and what the PE more than likely has access to, which is highly professional, well trained, and utterly unfeeling killers that fanatically serve their masters and will stop at NOTHING to cause us harm, no matter where they apply the pressure.
>>

We had such a good run, too. I was wondering why we've been seeing such stupid, harsh, and and uncharacteristic action prompts.
>>
I say we take them as a prisoner, try and do that thing where the prisoner forms an emotional attachment to the guards etc. See if we can make her really not want us to die so she can potentially become a double agent later on (it's a big maybe, but yknow).
>>
>>25413754
I more prefer keeping spies prisoner and cross-referencing their stories against one another to get a clearer picture of what is going on.

As long as they can't sync up on stories in some kind of public area.
>>
>>25413691

>>25413789
We've been trying to explain to you why what you're suggesting is retarded and impossible. You refuse to listen.

Either read up on Ssen's character and how she's worked to this point or kindly get the fuck out.
>>
Now, onto methods of getting a spy to talk that might actually work.

Google tells me that in addition to our standard cross-referenced interrogation, isolation also does wonders for getting folk to talk.

And then there's probably whatever terrible things peri has learned during her time of employment. Ancient elf interrogation secrets.
>>
>>25413895
oh, and a lamia-checked occuli truth spell might work great for interrogations. Both are a bit unreliable on their own, but together, would be much less so.

I wonder if there's any records of purple spells anywhere outside of citadel. We might add those to the quest list.
>>
>>25413895
How about we slowly start scaring her.
Ask her something she doesn't answer we show our fangs and start dripping black from them.
Ask her another question, she still won't answer we show her our claws and then start dripping black from them.
I'm pretty sure Phoenix Empire operatives don't how react to a huge serpent speaking their language and threatening to devour them and their entire nest.

Also Mumei did ask Ssen to kill her if she were ever forced to return back home.
