Shhhh, it'll be over soon. It's VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are MATTHEW WELLINGS, Samantha Wellings' little brother and Lanseal Military Academy student. After a hectic first day at school, you've made friends with Artya, the enigmatic masked Darcsen girl, and Mac, a laid back, womanizing guy who you suspect might be a closet masochist.

After pretty much acing the entrance exams, the three of you were assigned to the mysterious Class Z, apparently a shadow class that doesn't officially exist within Lanseal's standard class structure. You managed to find and confront several members of Class Z, led by their class chair John Price, though they didn't really give you much useful information besides the location of their "homeroom" and instructions to report there in the morning.

Well, it is now morning, about 7am in the morning to be exact. You've made sure to wake up early to give yourself plenty of time to find Class Z in case you get lost.

You open the door to your dorm and see Artya sitting outside in the hall, looking as if she's silently humming to herself.

"Uhhhh, Artya? What are you doing outside my room? How did you even know which room I was in?"

COULDN'T SLEEP. TOO EXCITED. Artya writes, not even answering your second question.

GO TO CLASS NOW?

>Sure, let's go.

Artya leads you out of the boys' dormitories, either oblivious or uncaring at the strange looks she gets from her male classmates as you walk out. Upon exiting the boys' dormitories, she leads you straight to the entrance to the girls' dormitories.

You are somehow not surprised at all.

Mac is of course trying to woo the girls as they come out of the dorms, with varying amounts of success. Some return his advances with a smile or a surreptitiously passed note. Most just ignore him, with a few shooting poisonous glares or frowns and a couple even go so far as to give him a good smacking. But, Mac is Mac, and he refuses to be cowed.

"What, the girls or Mac?" You sigh. "Nah, we should just leave let him have his fun."

Now, Mac seems to have centered on a red headed student, who's nice enough to stop and listen to what he has to say, but is clearly getting more impatient by the second. You're wondering how badly Mac is going to hit when a very familiar pink haired girl walks out in the hall. Upon seeing you and Artya, you can see the disdainful frown forming in slow motion on her face.

"Oh, it's YOU." Julianna narrows her eyes and strides toward you, or more accurately, towards Artya. You might as well not even exist to her. "Come to gloat about your short lived victory?"

Artya cocks her head to the side, obviously confused.

PLEASE EXPLAIN

"Oh, don't play dumb." Julianna's frown has now formed into a full scale scowl. "Everybody knows you scored the highest in the field exams. You even beat MY old score! What makes you think you're so good?"

You get the feeling that this isn't going to end well, but you're too afraid of butting in since your interference might end up causing the situation to escalate. You take a quick glance at Mac and see he's still busy flirting with the redhead, but a knowing glance from him lets you know he's well aware of what's going on and ready to jump in if needed.

Artya furiously scribbles down several notes.

I'M NOT JUST GOOD

I'M THE BEST

Now THAT seemed to set off Julianna even more, and she stands uncomfortably close to Artya in an attempt to intimidate her, which could very well work seeing as how Julianna was easily at least a full head taller than her.

"Those are mighty big words to come from a peasant Darcsen like yourself."

Without missing a beat, Artya reaches into her pocket and pulls out another note, handing it to Julianna.

BIG WORDS FOR A GIRL ABOUT TO GET STABBED IN A VITAL ARTERY

You and everybody else look down to see that Artya's other arm is holding a sharpened pencil dangerously close to Juianna's thigh, right over where the femoral artery should be. You wonder how long Artya has been keeping that note around for a situation like this...

However, the situation seems to have made Juliana even more angry. Her face becoming a new shade of red you're not sure what to call. She's obviously not backing down.

The atmosphere now has gotten very tense. You're not sure if Artya is bluffing or not, and you don't really want to find out.

Julianna gives you a good, long stare before realizing that her little confrontation with Artya has picked up an audience.

"Fine. We'll put this little 'incident' behind us.... for now." Julianna swishes her hair and moves to walk off before Artya taps her on the shoulder.

"Yes?" She says, looking at Artya suspiciously.

Arty hands Julianna another note. While she's reading it, you see her quickly sign to you.

<Retreat! Retreat! Retreat!>

You see Julianna recoil in horror at whatever Artya wrote and that's all you need to know before grabbing Artya by the wrist and exiting the area at full speed, Julianna's "GET OUT OF HERE, PEASANT!" still ringing in your ears.

"W-what did you say to her?" You ask.

Artya, who looks like she's laughing silently under the mask, looks at you and shrugs.

Unfortunately, you were forced to leave Mac behind, but you're sure he'll be fine. You hope.

"Come on, Artya, let's get to class." You say, leading to (where you believe) Class Z's homeroom is. It probably takes you at least a good ten to fifteen minute to find it, and unfortunately, getting there means you have to pass Class A's room every time. The mornings are sure going to be INTERESTING...

Sure enough, you find the the room that you were told to report to. You nervously look around up and down the empty halls, suffering from that eternal nagging feeling that you might have missed something, or you read the directions wrong or something.

Artya takes one look at you, shakes her head, and opens the door for you. Inside is probably no more than twenty or so students. Some of them seemed normal enough, though more than a few seemed hardcore as shit, Price included.

Speaking of Price, you can see him at the front of the classroom, casually disassembling and cleaning a pistol on his desk.

"Ah, the freshies. Well, two of you at least. Glad you could make it." Price nods. "Take any seat you see. The teacher should be here soon."

Meta-Anser: Class A is generally reserved for those who would make good subjects for what the Headmaster's planning.

Also there seems to be a no Darcsens rule in that class it seems (it's noted in the game Class A has none)

"Ah, everybody always asks that the first time." Price grins. "The long and short of it is, Class Z is reserved for those students who've acquired a very certain set of skills. Skills that would be wasted if they were placed in any other class."

"Like...?"

"Surviving in extreme environments, ability to move around quickly and quietly, outside the box thinking, lack of fear, no compunctions about resorting to... 'ungentlemanly' methods..." Price shrugs. "That's why we're off the books. Not very good PR, you see."

"Uh huh." You nod. "That's why Artya didn't get in Class A?"

"Personally, I don't think Miss Strawberry Milk would've let her in anyways." Price laughs. "Her loss."

"Her nickname. Class rule. Everybody has a nickname we use on missions. Missions and classes are kept completely separate." Price says. "We decided to call her Stalker because honestly, she moves like one."

"And not because he was impressed with her beating his score." Mactavish snickers.

"ALMOST beat my score." Price says defensively. "Don't worry, we'll come up with one for you and Mac in due time."

"We can't come up with one for ourselves?"

"Hell no! Then what's the point?" Price shakes his head. "The class picks your name, not you."

"Makes sense, I guess." You nod.

"WHOOOO, finally found it!" Mac says as he enters the door, with a few new bruises and slap marks.

"Had fun?" You ask.

"Oh yeah, lots!" Mac grins. "I got some promising leads. There's this one redhead though, oh maaaaaaan if I could just get her to open up..."

"Whoa, hold up there." Mactavish sits up in his seat. "This redhead, she's pretty short, wears a thick scarf, and has a fiery temper that rivals the heat of a thousand suns?"

"Yeah..." Mac says.

Mactavish whistles and the rest of the class just shakes their heads.

"I think you just hit on Meltdown. All I can say is uh... good luck, man."

At that moment the same redheaded girl from before bursts into the room, obviously not in a good mood.

"Ugh! You wouldn't BELIEVE what I had to go through this morning, Soap!" The girl sighs before realizing she's run into Mac. "Gah! What the hell are you doing here?!?"

"Ummm, I'm in this class?" Mac grins.

"Son of a bitch! I knew it!" The redhead curses.

"Ah, don't worry so much about it." Nikolai laughs. "We're already betting how long it'll be before he gives up!"

There's a bit of laughter in the room.

"So I guess you're the other two new students, huh?" The redhead approaches you and Artya, calming down slightly. "Name's Ashley Dunn. Hope you won't be as annoying as this clown here."

"Whoa, hold up there, does that mean we're actually going to FIGHT?" You gape.

"Well, of course." Price shrugs. "Technically, we're all part of the regular military. Current Gallian law forbids the use of militia to resolve domestic affairs, so it's up to the regular military, or what's left of it anyways, to put down the GRA. Plus, since we're in the south, pretty much in the heartland of GRA territory, it's not hard to put two and two together."

"Shit, my sister is going to be SO pissed when she hears about this." You sigh.

"That's the price of Gallian citizenship." Price shrugs.

"Class is now in session!" An elderly, but powerful voice booms through the room. Immediately, students begin scrambling for their seats, leaving you, Artya, and Mac ending up sitting next to Ashley.

From the door, an older gentleman with greying hair and a full military dress uniform strides to the from of the room with a professional grace, his posture and stride suggestion he's been in the military for quite a long time, just like Dad.

"Class, it is a new year, and we have fresh recruits. I would like to introduce you to Matthew Wellings, Artya, and Luke MacMillan."

There's a brief round clapping, as protocol called for.

"For those of you that don't know, I am Edward Novak, and I will be your teacher for Class Z."

"All of you, report to Shephard for field exercises. I will be giving our new recruits here our orientation."

With that, the rest of the students quickly file out of the room, leaving the three of you alone with Novak.

"So, recruits, let me ask you," Novak begins pacing in front of you, "why do you think you're here?"

"I guess, you because you think we've got some sort of potential?" You ask. "Though I can't imagine what. Me and Mac didn't even do that much in the field exam. It was all Artya."

Novak merely smiles.

"You are here, because I see in you potential that the other teachers here simply can't see. Did you ever wonder why your team composition was the way it was?"

"That was you?!" You blink.

"Oh yes. I wanted to see how you would handle being part of an overly specialized team. Your marksmanship is a minor issue. That can always be improved. However, what's harder to find are soldiers that can THINK."

"You see," He continues, "The problem with the other classes is that they are overly reliant on a single individual, or small group of individuals, for leadership. But what happens when their class chair is eliminated? No orders come down and the entire organization crumbles. I've seen it countless times. In Class Z, EVERY student is a potential leader. You are encouraged, no, EXPECTED to show your own initiative in the field, especially if you have no contact with the higher chain of command."

"I guess that makes sense." You nod. "But why all the secrecy?"

"Because in recent years, I have realized that there is a serious gap in Gallia's military capabilities." Novak frowns. "We have a very respectable conventional military, but what about those matters that require a 'finer' touch? Too sensitive to use the military on, but too risky to send something as unreliable as a Nameless unit at it, either. I created Class Z as a way to fill that gap."

SO WE ARE SPECIAL?

"Correct." Novak nods. "Class Z will form the basis of the Gallia Royal Secret Service. A unit specialized to handle missions that the regular army can't handle or that can't be trusted to Nameless."

>>25410337
Simply put, the majority of Gallia's military strength is in its Militia, who are basically citizen soldiers who largely won't be interested in joining an SF unit.

The Regulars are basically far too rigid in their thinking to consider it.

Plus, Lanseal is basically the West Point of Gallia. If you're going to found a new SF unit, you might as well start from the ground up.
>>
>>25410337
Plus sending cadets into combat isn't a regular thing. It's a desperation measure because the civil war comes right off the heels of the Imperial invasion, which sapped the regular military of most of its strength.
>>
>>25410382

Also lets keep in mind Lanseal is the ONLY military academy in Gallia. This is literally the only place to screen candidates.
>>
>>25410403
And the entire Central Gallian army!
Fuckin' Damon
>>
>>25410337
Not to mention the civil war essentially divided the Militia between GSA and Loyalists.

>>25410432
Actually the Militia can't be activated during a civil dispute, leading to a major issue.

Gallian military is undermanned and just ever so slightly incompetent, got it.
>>
>>25410503

Well the regular army is, the Militia has some of the best officers and men you could ask for.
Squad 7 is literally a squad loaded with badasses that have no right to be badass.
Take the example of Jane Turner, small rural florist turned sadist shocktrooper, or Aisha Neumann a shocktroop at 12 years of age.
>>
>>25410538
Ah yes, Aisha Neumann. Has more hit points than a Gallian Light Tank and can probably take one out.
>>
>>25410576
My aging grandmother could take out a Gallian light tank.

By sneezing on it.
>>
>>25410576

As I said. Badasses with no right to be badass.
Another example is Audrey Heitinga, a lancer with a bubbly personality and a penchant for being more prepared than an American Armoured platoon. Oh yeah did we mention she can crush a watermelon with her barehands and she's a friggin LANCER?

>>25410617

Yoko Martens, 40 years of age, also a lancer. She's the most accurate of ALL your lancers, males included.
So yeah. Aging grandmothers CAN take out a Gallian light tank, and Imperial light, heavy and mediums too!
>>
>>25410538
There is something screwy when the conscripts outmatch the professional forces.
>>
>>25410640
Does it say something bad about me if two of my favorite shocktroopers were Wendy and Jane?

"That is both a really crazy and really awesome sounding idea." You grin. Sam would probably be ultra pissed about it, but she got to romp around Europa with a group of elite mercenaries. Why can't you romp around Gallia with a group of elite cadets?

"I was hoping you would say that." Novak smiles and turns to Mac and Artya. "And you two?"

"Hey, if anything, the ladies LOVE the handsome guy with the mysterious job he can never talk about." Mac nods. "I'm SO in."

I WILL JOIN IF I CAN LOOT WHAT I FIND

"Well, then, welcome to Class Z!" Novak grins. "Now, if you will follow me, I have an announcement that must be made to the whole class.

The three of you follow Novak out to the field, where you see the rest of Class Z performing physical exercises. They all come to attention when they see Novak approach.

"At ease." He coughs, clearing his throat for speech mode. "Class, I know that over the past few years, we have enjoyed quite a bit of freedom and privacy due to our secret nature. However, with the recent expansions in class size, as well as the high possibility of us being deployed in live combat operations, I believe now is the time to make Class Z public, in order to promote camaraderie with the other Classes. However, I will still be maintaining the rule that forbids speaking of specific mission details to anybody outside of Class Z. Is that clear?"

"SIR YES SIR!" The class responds.

"You think that was really his decision?" Mac asks.

"Dunno. Maybe he wants to show off, maybe he was pressured to go public. Not enough intel." You shrug.

Let's keep going with the laundry list of awesome that makes up Squad 7 - Nadine one of the Darcsen engineers is apparently a very good writer, Coby Caird, 67 EWI VETERAN who decided that fuck this shit I'm signing up AGAIN, Musaad Mayfield another EWI vet and an Ace in the regular army before Damon got his ass handed to him and Ghirlandaio, Vyse and Aika AND Fina from Skies of Arcadia...

The list goes on, one of the reasons VC is so good is because those side characters are all if not most interesting individuals.
OH!

JAGER TOLD ME NOT TO TAKE ANY SHIT FROM BULLIES LIKE HER

Oh dear, if Sam's stories about Jager were in any way true... yeah you're pretty sure you haven't even begun to hear Artya's vast library of insults.

With the orientation over, you, Artya, and Mac join in on the field exercises. It's all the regular stuff, like calisthenics and laps and everything. However, Shephard, like any good drill instructor, is a harsh master, mercilessly grilling any student who gets even a minor stance wrong.

Finally, the bell for lunch break rings, and Shepherd calls off the class.

"Sloppy. Absolutely sloppy! I expect all of you to bring your A game tomorrow!" He barks as the students disperse.

"So hey, where are you planning on going?" Mac asks.

"To the mess hall? I mean, that's where the food is, right?" You say.

"Well yeah, but they just opened up a new student store on campus, and I heard that not only does it have pretty much everything, but it's got a smoking hot storekeeper too!" You can literally see Mac's eyes glazing over.

"Huh, well, what do you think, Artya?"

"Sure, we can check out the store." You shrug.

"Alright!" Mac grins. "You won't regret this!"

"Uh huh." You say, unconvinced.

Artya just gives him an exasperated look.

The walk to the store actually isn't that far, and it isn't very crowded either due to the majority of the students congregating to the mess hall. In fact, you're probably the only people at the store right now.

You see that the shelves are stocked with mostly basic needs, like food, water, toiletries, and other such things a student would need away from home.

At the counter, you see a somewhat bored looking middle aged man casually reading a newspaper. He's not really looking in your direction or paying any particular attention to you, but you get this unshakeable feeling he's got his eye on your somehow.

Meanwhile, Artya is going from shelf to shelf marveling at all the various items in stock, as if she'd never been in an actual store before. Then again, you heard from Sam that Artya didn't exactly have a privileged childhood, so what you took for granted probably seemed completely alien to her.

"I expect you to pay for that." The shop clerk grumbles, not even looking away from his newspaper.

You then turn to see Artya frozen in place, a box of cookies in her hands that were nearly drawn into the netherspace beneath her poncho. She gives the situation a second thought, looks at the shop keeper again, and gingerly places the box back in its shelf. The shop keeper just coughs as if nothing had happened.

"Hey, man." Mac walks up to the counter, obviously disgruntled. "I heard there was a hot chick to ran this store."

"Nope. You've heard wrong." The clerk says, still not taking his eyes off the paper. "I run this store. I think you're confusing me with Alicia. She runs the bakery here."

>>25412080
For a second there, you get the feeling that you've seen these two people before, but couldn't quite place it. However, something suddenly clicks, and you can see it clear as day and just blurt it out before you realize what's happening.

"Holy SHIIIIIIIIIIT you're Welkin Gunther and Alicia Melchiott, right?!? The SAVIORS OF GALLIA!! I've read all about you, at the battles at Vasel, Cloden, Barious, Naggiar, Fouzen, Marberry, Ghirlandio..."

Welvar just sighs and shakes his head like he was expecting this. Mac is in a similar state as you are, though you can see he's a bit crestfallen as well. Artya just seems plain confused, probably wondering if you've gone insane or not.

"Well, you certainly do know your history!" Welkin laughs, clearly amused. "Even I can't remember the names of all the places I've fought in!"

"Its nice to meet you, too." Alicia giggles, also amused at your impulsive outburst of fanboyism. "Though actually it's Alicia Gunther now. Were married."

It's at this point you are acutely aware that Mac is now missing. You think you catch sight of him sulking in a corner, but you're not too sure.

"Anyways, I don't believe I caught either of your names." Alicia continues.

At this point you've calmed down enough that you can start properly controlling what comes out of your mouth, though you're still blushing furiously from the outburst.

"Ah, well, I'm Matthew Wellings, and this is my friend, Artya."

"Wellings, that name sounds familiar..." Welkin blinks. "Ah yes! I passed by a General Wellings at the station yesterday. Is he related?"

"Uh yeah, that's my dad." You say.

"Well, I think you're lucky to have a father like him." Welkin nods. "He's very honest and straightforward. Something the Regular army really needs these days."

"And how about you?" Alicia bends down to look at Artya. "You've got a very interesting fashion sense."

BRINGS GOOD LUCK. Artya writes.

"Well, I certainly hope so." Alicia smiles. You notice that she's not even phased at the fact that Artya is both mute and wears a rather intimidating gas mask all the time.

"Oh, don't worry about it." Welkin laughs, as if he's read your mind. "Compared to some of the soldiers we served with in Squad 7, she's absolutely normal!"

"Oh, I nearly forgot!" Alicia gasps. "Here, you can try some of my bread. Don't worry, it's on the house!"

You accept the roll of bread Alicia graciously hands you, and you take a bite, and are almost floored by how amazing it tastes. It almost seemed to melt in your mouth.

Artya takes a roll as well and looks at it curiously. You're almost sure you'd be able to get a peek at her face if she tried to eat it, but Artya tears off a small piece, pulls her mask forward to open up a small gap, and, and inserts the piece of bread directly into it. The brief shudder she makes lets you know she's been floored by the taste as well.

"Well, is it good?" Alicia asks.

"It's incredible!"

Artya nods furiously, and draws a note with a huge smiling face on it.

"That's good to know!" Alicia smiles. "If want any more, or if you just want to come by and talk, you can come back here any time!"

"Thank you, Mrs. Gunther." You nod respectfully.

The three of you leave the store with a box of Alicia's fresh bread, as well as some meats and cheeses to go with it. You're pretty sure you're set for lunch, though Mac still seems down in the dumps.

You suspect you might know what's gotten Mac into such a dour mood. As much as a womanizer as he is, even he's got some standards to abide by. One of those is probably to steer clear of married or engaged girls. Honestly though, you think it's for the best. Nothing but pain and trouble down that path.

"Hey, don't worry Mac. There's still plenty of other students in this school to hit on." You say reassuringly.

"Yeah, I guess you're right." Mac sighs. "At least we didn't leave empty handed."

"No, me and Artya didn't leave empty handed. It's your fault you were too zoned out to buy anything before we left."

"Aw man, don't be so cruel, Matt! Can't you cut your best bro some slack?"

"Last i checked, the mess hall is nearby. Look on the bright side. At least there will be girls there to hit one. You might even get lucky and find a hot lunch lady!"

"Yeah right. Since when were there ever attractive cafeteria cooks?" Mac snorts, gives you a wave, and sulks off.
