( I apologize for not continuing yesterday, turns out I've got pneumonia and I've been holed up in my house drugged up on anti-biotics)

You are TK-392, a Stormtrooper in the Imperial army. It’s only been a week since you finished bootcamp and you’ve already seen your fair share of action on your first assignment; bar fights, terrorizing citizens, and engaging rebels along the outskirts of the city you’ve been sent to. Unfortunately it turns out the Rebel’s base was nothing more than a small shack filled with explosives. Out of sheer luck you managed to shield both yourself and your commanding officer before the shack exploded and sent both of you flying back in a hellish whirlwind of fire and twisted metal.

Your memories come rushing through in blurry shapes; it’s like you’re watching your life through a holo-vid with too much static. The endless, constant stream of sights and sounds long past is too much for your senses to handle and you wake up. You're on the ground next to the transport a few yards away from the smoking crater that used to be the Rebel’s “base”. You see bits and pieces of smoldering armor and the body parts of your fellow squad mates strewn around the area. You try to lift yourself up but have a hard time doing so, your muscles screaming in protest of your movements. You only have the energy to sit up and rest your head on the side of your transport. Your head is still foggy, you try to stay conscious by thinking about what you should do next.
Do you:
A.Look for any surviving squad mates close to the crater.
B.Try to find your CO
C.Look for a comm to call for evac
D.Get in the transport and drive back to the city
>>
>>25420118
Crawl around looking for CO, she shouldn't be too far off. Also, call for evac.
>>
>>25420172
Also, considering that the initial 'ambush' by rebel troops was probably just a distraction, the real rebel attack is forthcoming real soon. Better get the hell out of here.
>>
>>25420118
B.Try to find your CO
C.Look for a comm to call for evac
We know that she was shielded by us, so she's got a good chance of being alive.
While looking for her we can also look for a commlink.
>>
>>25420118
B.Try to find your CO

So we can give her the D.
>>
>>25420172

I second this
>>
>>25420218
I think that field rape is against our training.
>>
Man, fuck Imperial policy, I want to get a cheap droid to open doors for us from now on. Command might be fine with sending us in to die, but I'd rather spend a few credits and live.
>>
>>25420264
Seconded, I fucking hate astromech droids anyway so we could just as well get one as a mine detector.
>>
>>25420256
Always consensual. My point is that saving her increases our chance for consensual D considerably.
>>
>>25420320

I second this as well
>>
>>25420320
Fraternization is against military rules.
>>
>>25420118
Grab your rifle and fire indiscriminately into all directions while yelling about bantha-humping scum.
>>
>>25420308
What about those boxy two-legged ones? Maybe we could get a protocol droid on the cheap?
>>
>>25420476
They're kinda gay, though.
>>

Your thoughts immediately return to your CO's safety, she has to be around the area somewhere and you hope she's alive.

You slowly stand up, using the side of the transport to support yourself. You take one step forward and your sides erupt in searing pain; you can feel your ribs moving around with a life of their own. You stop in your tracks trying to fight the urge to pass out.

You steel yourself, using every ounce of will power you have to fight back the pain. You won't let this get in the way of your mission, you have to prove yourself.

You take a deep breath and slowly start walking around to search for your CO. The carnage is pretty bad around the shed, you know that nobody else survived the explosion and it would be a waste of time. You head back to the transport and walk to the other side of the road. Your eyes immediately turn to a crumpled shape alongside the ditch in the road and shamble your way to it. It is your CO and she's in rough shape; one side of her face is burnt from the blast and her leg is broken at the knee, the small pool of blood soaking the grass around the wound explaining why the parts of her skin that aren't burnt are pale as ivory. Kneeling next to her you check her pulse, you can hardly feel it.

You're not a medic, you're a soldier. You need to get her back to the transport and try to contact someone to give you an evac.

What do you do?
>>
>>25420768
You were in the turret for most of the time so you aren't sure.

Doesn't our gear include a first aid kit as standard?
Give our CO some first aid to stabilize her for movement. Then we carry her back to the transport and look for a working comm to call for a medevac.
>>
>>25420889
Get back to the transport and look for first aid supplies. Patch her up as well as you can and then drive the transport over, hoist her in and evac.
>>

>>

>>
>>25420908
Shouldn't that be standard equipment, though? Or maybe some corrupt bureaucrat sold them...
>>
>>25420940
Well, yeah, if we can drive the transport, then your plan is best. I wasn't sure if we had the training for it since it was our CO that was driving.
>>
>>25420986
You'd think that boot camp would cover basics like that?
>>
>>25420926
Unfortunately no; The standard Stormtrooper load out is your Blaster rifle with a few special rounds ( incendiary, stun, tranquilizer), a grappling hook, a short range wrist comm, and one thermal detonator,
>>
we need to get our CO to the transport (after stabilizing), then radio for help. there might still be rebels around, waiting to finish the survivors.

after we radio out, see if there's any other survivors, then take care of them as we can with the first aid kit.
>>
>>25420926
>>25421020
They never did seem to care much for Stormtrooper survivability
>>
>>25421039
Which is funny considering how high the selection standards are to become a trooper.

This makes perfect sense.
>>
>>25420926
>>25420940
>>25421035

Even though you're not a medic you know that moving her in her condition would probably kill her. You don't remember if you saw any medical equipment in the transport but right now it's the only thing you can think of. You make your way back inside the cramped confines of the transport and start looking for anything that could help your CO.

"That kriffing sucks, 392. Did your recruiting officer tell you you'd get to shoot aliens?"
"Kriffin' A he did!"
"See, 392 asked about shooting people. I asked about pussy. The guy told me I'd get to go to Zeltros, get all kinds of strange. What'd you ask about, 376? 376 probably saw that T.V. commercial, the one with the Sith that kriffs up the Krayt Dragon then turns into the Stormtrooper."
"Woo woo! Dress greys with a vibrosword!"
"Kriffing dress greys commercial man. That got so many kriffing guys. Now look at us: 392 hasn't killed any aliens, I'm half a galaxy away from good Zeltron pussy, and 376 is out here rolling around kriffbutt Reecee, hunting for Krayt Dragons in armor that smells like four days of piss and ball sweat."

Despite your best efforts, you're unable to find any kind of medical kit or equipment inside of the transport. You know your last best chance of saving your CO is the emergency distress call in the driver's compartment. After you've sent out the distress signal you make it back to your CO as fast as your broken body could take you.

You kneel down beside her; she's still unresponsive and her pulse is almost non-existent. The reinforcements won't make it here in time, you can feel it in your gut. Before you can think of what to do next, you hear the haunting sound of her last breath pass her lips and she dies.

You feel a little bit of grief towards the dead officer; you didn't know her well enough to get emotionally attached to her; you didn't even know her name, but she had saved you in the bar and you felt it was only right to try and save her in return.... and you failed.

You pick up her lifeless body and carry her back to the transport, laying her down on one of the rows of seats. You sit down next to her and try to process what just happened. Your entire squad is dead, your commanding officer is dead, and you're sitting out in the middle of nowhere in a scorched suit of armor and barely conscious. Your heart beats faster as rage slowly takes over and your mind is filled with one thought, vengeance against the rebels.

You sit there for what seems like forever until you hear the familiar sound of an Imperial shuttle slowly getting louder and louder. You're adrenaline spent, you pass out again with the thought of vengeance and death on your mind.

The shuttle lands and a squad of troopers exits; guns drawn and looking for something to shoot. Instead of enemies they find you, a lone trooper in beat up armor and barely alive sitting next to his commanding officer; defending her even in death. You are transported back to the Imperial prison and spend 3 weeks in a Bacta tank. After you recover you are recognized for your survivability and your valiant attempt to save the life of your commanding officer and are bumped up from Beta squad to Alpha squad.

You are also given a new set of armor and as a token of your brutal dispatch of the rebel ambushers your E-11 blaster is replaced with a
T-21 light repeating blaster.

You decide the best thing to do is to upgrade your weapon to its maximum potential. You give your weapon to the Chief Armorer and tell him to make it as powerful as possible. Despite your heated first encounter with the old Ugnaught, he just snorts and gets to upgrading your weapon. After 2 hours he hands it back to you; he put in a bigger power cell and strung more cooling wire around the power pack receiver conduit; allowing you to shoot 40 rounds apart from the standard 25 and increasing the rate of fire exponentially.

( I just gave you guys a death machine, every ranged combat roll you succeed will be extremely fatal; even if the enemy is behind cover or is wearing heavy armor.)

After that you decide it's time for some R&R and you head to one of the local bars to drink the pain of the last few weeks away. You find a bar that is populated by other troopers and Imperial workers like yourself blowing off some steam. After about 30 minutes of steady drinking you're thoroughly sauced and looking for an excuse to fight. You survey the bar; at the far end you see a group of young soldiers trying to get the affections of a Twi-lek who looks very annoyed. You look to the other side and see an Aqualish drinking by himself; the memory of being beaten up by one of his kind makes you angry and wanting to prove yourself.

So what'll it be gents?

A. Save the Twi-lek
B. Pick a fight with the Aqualish
>>
>>25422823
>>25422852
Do the other guys in Alpha squad do that? If they don't and see us cutting off ears and making a necklace, we're either going to have to be really good at what we do, or we'll be shipped off somewhere for fear of a psychotic breakdown.

Also, get a medpack. Nobody Has To Die.

A lone guman taking out an Aqualish and several rookie Imperials misrepresenting their uniforms should be enough of a rating on the badass-o-meter. We aren't a main character yet. you know what I mean
>>
>>25423336
I am mostly joking, and unless we lit up some flammable shit conveniently located, there is no way to level the place. That would be a little too far out of line, let's first get a reputation as a fist of the empire while in Alpha before we pull shit like that.

And we shouldn't gun them down, just whopp their asses and see where it takes us-if they pull a gun, hose them down. Someone steps in, they get knocked out.
>>
>>25423336
Just fight with the Aqualish. You can chew out the soldiers for fraternizing later.

> 4 for Twi-lek, 3 for Aqualish.

You look over at the Twi-lek again, trying to focus on her amid your drunken stupor. She reminds you of your CO, you remember how you failed to protect her, you're not going to let it happen again. You push yourself off of the bar and stumble your way across the room towards the Twi-lek and her three suitors. As you get closer you hear the Twi-lek's tone getting angrier.

" Get away from me you pigs, I told you I'm not that kind of girl."

One of the bigger soldiers extends his arm to the wall, blocking her from reaching the exit.

" Awww you hurt my feelings honey, you know we work for the Empire right? We may have to take you in for some additional interrogation."

He tries to grab her arm and she slaps him across the face hard.

" YOU DON'T GET TO TOUCH ME, WOOKIE KISSER!"

The looks at her with murder in his eyes and raises his fist, about to strike the Twi'lek!

So that's seven? for option B, but not for OP's reasons, and being prepared to commit option A with extreme prejudice if the Aqualish gives us anything near a valid reason to use our new weapon on him

I'll add an addendum myself, if any aliens come up to thank us for dealing with the other Imperials, we deck them and growl out some racial epithet appropriate to the particular species before walking out

and, no, we don't explain ourselves to the rookies aside from calling them a 'disgrace to their uniform'

Just before he can strike the Twi-lek, you grab the wrist of the big soldier. He looks around at you and only has time to say " What the hell are you-" before you slug him across the face. The powerful hit staggers him and he falls back onto a nearby table, breaking it and showering him in broken glass and alcohol. The other two soldiers rush at you, one of them hits you across the face while the other puts you in an arm lock. You take another hit from the soldier in the front and fortunately your drunkenness makes you oblivious to the pain. As the soldier is about to strike you another time, you extend your leg and kick him in his nether regions as hard as you can, sending him rolling on the floor crying over his broken thermal detonators. The soldier holding you sees this and loosens his grip for a split second, giving you the room to head butt him. His arms let go of you to nurse his broken nose, you punch him in the face again for good measure and he drops to the ground unconscious.

" HEY!"

You turn around to be greeted with the sight of a DL-44 blaster being pointed at you. The big soldier has recovered from your sucker punch and is getting ready to shoot you.

You aren't wearing your armor so a direct shot from his blaster would be fatal, but you did decide to carry your back up blaster with you; an SE-14r.

Roll d20 for a dexterity check; let's hope you can shoot through beer goggles.

Despite your alcohol drenched nerves your training pays off and you draw your blaster with lightning speed.

A single shot reverberates around the bar.

The big soldier crumples to the ground; a small, perfectly round hole burned through his chest.

You holster your weapon and look around to see if your CO is okay, only to find a Twi-lek staring at you with wide, fright filled eyes.

" T-thank..." she begins to say, but you cut her off

" You're not the commander"

"What?" the puzzled look on her face angers you; she tricked you and now she's playing dumb.

You strike her across the face and she falls, completely caught off guard. All the other bar patrons are looking at you, completely horrified. You don't like all these people looking at you; you go over to the body of the soldier you just killed, pick up his blaster and shove it into the back of your pants. You then grab a bottle of booze from one of the nearby tables and walk out of the bar and into the night.

and so concludes tonights session. We covered a lot of ground this time and you guys did a great job giving ideas and input; I love how you guys are leading the story.

Not just his CO, but himself.
He had injuries that needed 3 weeks in a bacta tank; that's some pretty serious injuries and might have been close to death himself. A medic with a medkit would have really helped.
>>
>>25425325
I'll make a note of that for our next session. Is there anything else you or anyone still in this thread would like to ask?

>>
>>25425483
>"Act naturally after a near death event."
You know not every MC is supposed to be a self-insert. This was natural for him. He was angry and he wanted to take it out on someone in a bar.

You shouldn't get mad when people play characters differently. It gets old when /tg/ plays the same thing over and over.
>>
>>25425467
I know a guy I used to work with who had survivor's guilt bad. He was a Seal in Vietnam and went on a mission that ended up killing everyone in his squad except him and gave him a piece of grenade shrapnel lodged in his head. He stutters like crazy now because of it and talks about nightmares constantly.

As for the survivors guilt part, the man doesn't have an ounce of self-confidence in him and thinks everything is his fault. It's really sad being around him.
>>
>>25425500
Yes we are. According to wookieepedia the T-21 is largest gun the Empire makes that can be carried by a single trooper.
>>
>>25425514
This. I'm sure that anon would've enjoyed just a *riveting* evening of getting better armor and masturbating over stats, but rest of us wanted to go to a bar, an lo, there was much fun to be had for all. It seems as if "doing things" somehow makes the character more interesting, who would've thought so?
>>
>>25425568
I totally agree (not the anon you're arguing with btw), the 'going to the bar bit' was awesome, the choice of upgrading our already deadly gun to make it more deadlier, as opposed to getting medkits though, that seemed stupid and I honestly hope there is a chance we can pick some up before our next mission.
>>
>>25425568
So instead of being concerned with his own self-preservation, and going to a droid shop and having something happen there, you prefer to drive the character to be the most reckless and stupid that he can be.
>>
>>25425623
Yes? It ended awesomely, what's the problem here?
>>
>>25425623
Maybe surviving that horrible situation when he feels he should have died makes him reckless and stupid.

>>25425623

>>
>>25425623
He suffers from PTSD and *isn't* concerned with his own self-preservation, that's the entire point of this character. Sometimes the sensible thing to do is also very OOC, have you thought about that?

>>25425639

>>25425962
>>25426026
Nice metagaming.
>>
>>25425946
We could have died in the fight in this bread, or in the rebel thermal det trap from last thread. Good rolls at crucial points is the only think keeping us alive.

I like it this way anyway, we're a bloody Stormtrooper, not Vader. Life in the Empire's military is harsh and unforgiving; we'll die sooner or later.
>>
>>25426071
But I think you should make the stakes extremely high for each roll, though, to fit with the tone of the game.
If we'd failed in the bar, we should have either died or been put into a bacta tank for another week, with a demotion and citation waiting for us.
>>
>>25426091
Perhaps, but I don't really think that it's true. I believe that failure at those points would've caused us some repercussion, but the quest would've continued.
>>
>>25426080
It's the truth, though. You don't have to acknowledge it if it makes you feel better.
>>
>>25426091
Motion seconded, the feeling, at least, of being on the edge of fucking up because we're pushing the envelope is what is making this quest exciting to me. Sure, we'll get coksure and take too many risks, but I expect the OP to be there when we fuck up and give us what we asked for- the price of failure. Maybe not death (unless we've really and truly screwed the pooch), because that means the end of the game, but a damn good setback.

Hey, a question about that SEAL co-worker you said had survivor's guilt; did he take any great personal risks, or was he very risk-averse?
I decided to read up on survivor's guilt, and not the version presented in movies, and they mostly talk about guilt, depression, and lack of motivation. And suicidal, yes, but not by taking unreasonable personal risks.
>>
>>25426174
Oh but I have made the stakes high; the very first roll that failed in this thread caused the death of the CO. That being said I'm not going to go out of my way to kill the MC.

How about this; maybe for the next thread I'll add more options to what you can do/say to people in certain situations.

Let me use the bar fight as an example; would you have preferred me to give you the option of fighting them, talking to them, or trying to lie to them to make them go away?

I want your guy's input on this so I can make this quest as close to what you want it to be.
>>
>>25426282
He was a Navy Seal in Vietnam that went on special missions and almost died from one of them, I would say that's taking a great personal risk
>>
>>25426308
more options is always good, and even if we go straight for 1 option, it atleast gets discussions flowing about the different options, it gets people thinking
>>
>>25426308
Sure, the options are nice, but going by how certain players have been responding, they would have gone for the fight option no matter what.
And at that point, death should always be a very real likelihood.

We're in a setting, and on a world, where barfights are very much likely to result in vibro-knives and blasters being pulled. Every single fight should have the chance of death.
>>
>>25426346
Well yes, but I'm asking about how he was afterwards, not before.
>>
>>25426371
>Every single fight should have the chance of death.
only if we roll 3 1's in a row, because honestly, I would like this quest to last past the next thread where you will inevitably fuck up
>>
>>25426418
2 failures should be enough to cause death.
Otherwise, there's not enough risk, is there.
>>
>>25426389
No, he just went about his business. Second guessed every single thing he did because he was so unsure of trusting his own decisions; it took him hours to get simple tasks done just because of that.
>>
>>25426452
>Second guessed every single thing he did because he was so unsure of trusting his own decisions
Sounds like he became risk-averse, then.
>>
>>25426362
>>25426371
So what I'm hearing is I should add more options but keep the high stakes? As others have said before the only thing that's been keeping you alive throughout this entire quest is some damn lucky dice rolls. I guess I'm nervous about killing the character prematurely, especially if it comes across as an arbitrary decision because I don't want to come across as an asshole to you guys.
>>
>>25426468
Two different people can react in different ways.

Maybe our guys was thinking "if I could have reacted faster, she'd still be alive"

bam, risk-taking behavior and twitchy reflexes
>>
>>25426512
>damn lucky dice rolls
>especially if it comes across as an arbitrary decision
Yeah, you need to make it apparent that its our fuckups that get us into a situation where we can die, and then the lucky dice can come out to play. Having high stakes is great, but if we roll low and trip on a gutter and snap our neck, that is fucking retarded.

Death should not be a possibility of every single action we take, it should only be a possibility when the actions we take are bad enough to push us into that dark corner, then it becomes fair.

Otherwise this quest won't last 3 posts in the next thread.
>>
>>25426512
>So what I'm hearing is I should add more options but keep the high stakes?
Yes. If players choose to do something risky or stupid, they should be prepared to accept the consequences of their actions. Just because you plan for something to go a certain way, doesn't mean that it will.

Of course, because of that, I think that modifiers due to proper planning, preparation, and equipment should be allowed.
If the players don't take the time and care for proper setup, then of course they shouldn't get the extra bit of protection that such modifiers grant.

He could also go the route of "If I knew first aid I could have saved her", or "If I was trained in detecting explosives I could have prevented it"

He could become all "gotta catch em all" towards skills and mission preparation
>>
>>25426667
and that outlook isn't incompatible with the "I need to solve the problems faster"

he isn't a determinator who will forsake his personality just to become a multiple doctorate holder
>>
>>25426512
Death should be a possibility because of our actions, not because of "mah hardcorez diffuculty"
>>
>>25426710
No it is not, I never said it was, I said it was one of the many routes he could go down depending on how we play him, 1 threads worth of decisions does not make a man.
>>
>>25426637
>>25426632
Thanks for the input; I'll keep that in mind when I start our next session
>>
>>25426722
Starting a fight in a bar with soldiers should always carry the possibility of death, though.
That DL-44 should have killed us if 1. we failed the initiative and 2. we failed a second check to dodge. MAYBE a 3. medtechs get to us in time if we didn't fail by too big a margin in 2.

Otherwise there isn't very much consequences for stupid actions.
>>
>>25426512
Ultimately, you shouldn't be afraid to put your boot down. Don't bend to the whims of /tg/.
>>
>>25426761
If /tg/ gets a character killed, then /tg/ gets a character killed. Don't sugarcoat it, don't fudge the DC to allow for some kind of bullshit plot armor to save the MC.
As a GM you need to be firm and put your foot down over /tg/'s whining when their dumb actions get them in trouble.

I mean, for fuck's sake, you're even allowing what are essentially 2 free rerolls per action by taking the best of 3. Almost no one would allow that in an actual tabletop game without burning Fate points, and you're allowing it for every single roll.

It's because this is a Quest, and despite how shitty most of them are, storytelling should take precedence over mechanical difficulty. If you're using the textual medium you might as well make it easier to write a satisfying story.
>>
>>25426943
>storytelling should take precedence over mechanical difficulty
Fun should have precedence over storytelling and mechanical difficulty. And part of fun is having stakes and the possibility for failure and loss.
And random chance of failure is explicitly made a part of the storytelling process by including mechanics.
Otherwise, there's no reason to roll, and each decision should have a hidden success/failure condition.

Since we do have dice in this quest, random failure has to be accounted for as a valid consequence. Since "best out of 3" equating to 2 rerolls on every action, that should be more than enough chance for success on even the most stupid of actions for the MC to survive, and therefore death should be a valid consequence for failure.
>>
>>25426782
Especially since a DL-44 is pretty much the Star Wars equivalent of a Smith & Wesson Model 29.
>>
>>25426389
You do realize evry day life an combat have nothing to do with each other, yes?

Throw him in front of a burning house with a kid trapped inside, see what happens.
>>
Holy shit OP you're not sugarcoating this quest at all huh?

Also, can we drop the "best of 3" thing with dice rolls? I appreciate the thought but it takes some of the suspense out of it. If /tg/ fucks up, we fuck up. Wouldn't be the first time a stomtrooper died and won't be the last.

Also, since our CO died, did you have plans to flesh her out down the road? Was she meant to become a love interest or something? I will admit, killing her off was the twist this quest needed. Niw its got some real potential.
>>
>>25431326
the best of 3 is almost a necessity for having multiple participants in a quest, things are already hard enough, and without having a 3 dice pool, this quest will not last past its next thread

I appreciate that you're a masochist, but please, I would like this quest to stick around for a while.
