I'm always receptive to feedback and awesome haiku's, I said I'd try to set a theme for haiku's each thread and for this one the theme is 'expectation'.
>Sorry for the late start.
--------------------------

You are Maro of Jin, also called 'Maro of the Lightning'. It has been a week since your sister Pan negotiated passage for your party onto a ship headed towards the island of Jin. It has been a week since you were warned by the spirit Koh to 'ware the sea', and Flame-Lily mentioned that she had an ominous preminition about your sea voyage.

Your week of travel has not even brought you to the first (and only) port of call this ship intends to dock at before continuing forward to Jin. Attempted conversations with the ship captain have left you ignored, most of your seven days thus has been playing pai sho with Lily, explaining your last five years as best as you can to Pan and occasionally asking Ming Puar about spirits.

You are beginning to bore of travel. You want to stretch your legs and fight, even if it's only sparring

[ ] Ask Ming Puar if she'd like to spar (hard)
[ ] Ask the Captain if there's any benders aboard that you could spar with. (medium)
[ ] Ask Pan if Rokan taught her anything about self defense (medium-hard)
[ ] Ask Lily if she'd like some lessons on how to use the knife we bought her. (Easy)

I assume Pan has no talent for bending because she wasn't shipped off to monkland with us, so we should make sure she knows a bit about stabbing people.

Correct, it was mentioned in the very first thread that Maro is the only bender of his family.

Growing restless and bored, you notice a similar sentiment growing in Ming Puar.

"Ming, I feel confined and restless on this ship, I feel like my skills are losing their edge, even thought it's only been a week. I know you're skilled - Spar with me please". You practically plead with Ming.

"... I'll warn you once more, that Gen Xiao Ren might cut you to pieces" Ming says slowly and cautiously.

"You say that every time I ask you about sparring, why?"

"Gen Xiao Ren didn't teach me how to hold back... and for some inexplicable reason it feels like he takes over when I fight sometimes".

"I'll be extra careful then Ming, am I allowed to use my bending?"

"Yes, it would be good practice for me too. No Lightning though I think it would both unsettle the ship captain and Gen Xiao Ren tells me that while you find its generation easy, you still don't have proper mastery of it."

"I wasn't planning on lightning" you say almost sullenly "... I've seen what generally happens to people I use it on."

The past few days on the open seas have been unseasonably hot, even for the fire nation. You know washing your clothes won't be able to be done for a few days, so you remove your top as you grab your staff and head above decks.

Above deck you explain to the first officer that you want to use a portion of the main deck to spar, and he quickly allows it citing the need for entertainment amongst the crew.

Minutes later Ming Puar arives above deck... dressed in a similar manner to you, though her chest is wrapped tightly. The crew is whoops with delight.

Ming nods that she's ready.

Almost as soon as Ming nods, and you nod back she points Gen Xiao Ren straight towards you and begins a charge. You know she holds the advantage in close quarters so you'll do whatever you can to deny her that for as long as possible.

With a step forward and a punch you deliver a shortened blast of fire, which she twirls past - and she pulls a knife and throws it. Ducking under it, it strikes the mast behind you and bounces off, "Dulled" is the immediate impression you're left with. Continuing to drop from the duck you kick out with your right foot, shooting a burst of flame that Ming is forced to block, she's only minorly singed by it but its halted her charge. You see a fuzzy outline around Ming, It seems familiar somehow.

Planting your staff you slap your hand towards the deck and shoot a small gout of flame that sees you back on your feet and in proper stance.

"First blow struck?" You clarify and recieve a nod
"First blow struck Maro, that will determine this match".

Shooting out a sheet of fire from your feet as you step forward, you're incredibly surprised to see Ming use Gen Xiao Ren to leap over it.

Ming grabs Gen Xiao Ren, close to the start of the blade, and as your sheet of fire spreads across the deck, she plants the base of the pole against the deck and she 'jumps', extending herself completely vertical over the blade.

You're so astonished by this manuever, that you don't even consider defense when she hops over from her guan dao, and plants both of her currently bare feet in your face. You reel from the kick and slam back against the mast, the crew are amazed but you both know that wasn't the end of it.

[ ] Attempt to finish the match with a decisive staff thrust (medium-hard)
[ ] Wait for Ming to swing and try and catch Gen Xaio Ren to deliver a firebending punch (medium)

Don't agonize over hitting ming puar with firebending please, maro knows this is just a friendly match.

Ming puar steps in closer, brandishing Gen Xiao Ren... a flicker of fear passes over you, you step forward and thrust with your khakkara, Ming sweeps the thrust off to the side twirls around and spins straight into a chop. You manage to grab Gen Xiao Ren with your free hand halting the chop, you recover from the thrust, plant the staff down in front of you and gently tap it into Mings forehead.

"Very good" you hear, in almost a distant whisper... and thats when you notice the six disembodied arms floating around Ming, two in the exact same position her hands are. Startled you let go and scramble back, and that's when you notice the face of Gen Xiao Ren imposed over Mings own.

"Very good... Stormchild", you hear the face say as it and the arms fade out of existence.

I figure that her knowing a bit more about Gen Xiao Ren might be good, such as his status and how he put his essence in her weapon, strengthened it, and how he lives in both worlds.

It could be useful for her to know that she's got a conduit to the spirit world in her hands.

"Thank you for the match Ming... I feel like there's some things you could teach me about how to fight. I mean the monks were good... but you've been taught by a master"

Gently rubbing the spot on her forehead where you hit her. "I kind of expected a real blow... I didn't think you'd be so gentle... I'll see what I can do about training you."

Looking around you see various crew-members settling bets, and in the lookout you see a woman snort in derision before she goes back to watching the horizon. You mentally mark her as 'unusual' though you cannot say how. The first officer tosses both you and ming something to wipe the sweat off with and thanks you for the entertainment.

Heading belowdecks you find Lily in the room.

"Lily, would you like some instruction on how to use the knife I bought you?"
"... I'm not sure I do"
"Why?... Is it because of Zhao Peng?"
"... I don't think I could go above-decks dressed like Ming just was, how she wasn't blushing from head to toe..." Lily trails off before leaning in and whispers in a conspiratory manner "I don't think Ming has a sense of shame".

After a few reassurances that Lily won't have to dress at all like Ming unless she chooses, you manage to convince her how to defend her self.

Please roll some d20's for training montage, they are only indicative of progress made in time allotted, I'll call the roll when I've got sufficient dice.

Starting by telling Lily that we won't go above decks to practice... but it still helps if she's less encumbered by clothing you're met by resistance. Apparently Lily is very body-conscious. After some cajoling you finally manage to get her into an appropriate state of dress for learning how to play with knives, you firmly believe it was "Please, we wouldn't want to ruin one of your nice dresses" that managed it.

>>25459743
>>25459748
The first twenty minutes after you manage to get her changed, she expresses enthusiasm for learning and things go well. So well she starts to spin off into daydreams about how she'll be the best knife-fighter ever, you think based on the latter portion of the hour.

>>25459770
Pan steps in and begins to help you with instruction. Pan has dressed down in an appropriate manner and explains some of Rokans theory and practice. You're given a bit of a break in which you make some tea and ponder on how terrifying your younger sister could be if she was a bender.

>>25459772
Breaking briefly for tea, Lily complains of sore muscles, you pause training briefly to check her muscle tone and find that she has very little. Remembering that the monks often used deep tissue massages to help strength the muscles of trainees sent to them in poor physical condition, you pause training to work on helping Lily get stronger. Shortly after you know you've done well when Lily complains of sore *everything*.

>>25459773
Ming enters and hearing Lily's complaints prepares a soothing balm, while you explain some of knife fighting theory.

>>25459784
Lily seems to follow the theory well and makes some decent progress, but she'll clearly need a lot more practice.

Cont

>>25459800
Ming and Pan both try to help you with training... and that somehow ends up with them in their own little sparring match, while you're instructing lily, who is repeatedly destracted by Ming and Pan. Ming has set down Gen Xiao Ren for the match and Pan somehow manages to throttle the larger stronger girl soundly. Attempting to teach lily based on this works relatively well and you decide to call the training session for the day.

Lily is [beginning to show a slight amount of skill with her knife]. She has decided to name her knife [Flame-taker] upon Pan's advice that 'all good weapons need a name' something you recall Rokan enthusiastically telling you... It seems Rokan managed to delude Pan with that sillyness.

In all you manage to spend about three hours training Lily, and when you're done you hear a cry from above decks. "CAPTAIN, THERE IS BLACK FLAGS HEADING OUT FROM THE COVE WE'VE BEEN SKIRTING THE EDGE OF".

The Captain grunts angrily, "I had hoped we wouldn't run across them here, but it sounds like the rumors were true, a bunch of pirates have been preying upon those making the run to Jin".

"Yes, I suppose pirates will do" you respond

"Yes, I knew of them, hoped they were just a rumor but I knew of them"

"And you still took our money and offered no warning!?" Pan begins to rant, apparently this is a sensitive issue with her.

"Aye, I can't let rumor ruin my custom for me, girl. I did what I could to prepare in case the rumors were true. See the woman up in the lookout? She's a former Yu Yan, she left them for reasons she wouldn't tell me about - she's the one who spotted them first and she's worked with me before. Pirates are often mightily discouraged by their numbers being struck dead from more than twice their bow range."

"I'm pretty sure I could manage it, if it was necessary. I don't think I'd want to try to fight that many pirates at once though."

"And the girlie with the nasty polearm, think she could lead my crew for me?"

"I'll ask, but I think she's more suited to just fighting than leading a boarding party".

Pausing to talk to Ming Puar, you get confirmation that she could lead a boarding party. Relaying this information the captain he warns you that there's only going to be a few minutes before you're in range.

Motioning to everyone you rush down into the room shared by your party. Ming and Yourself quickly don your respective bits of armor, as you finish putting it on you turn to Lily.

"Lily, I need to ask you what you feel about this. I know it seems strange, but please tell me everything you feel about this".

"... This is much worse than just two pirate ships, I feel like there's some sort of... sea monster?"

"I trust you, I need you to do me a favor - climb up to the Yu Yan archer, tell her to shoot at anything you feel is most important. If it means defending me or Ming while we're over on another ship do it. If it means shooting something else to keep this ship safe, do it. You'll unfortunately need to stay dressed as you are to climb up there though." You instruct lily.

Lily nods and accepts what you say. As you turn and start to walk away, Lily grabs you and pulls you into a completely unexpected kiss.

"Eel"
"That was... unexpected but not unpleasant, and what was that about Eel?"
"Nothing... I mean, I'm not sure. Stay safe Maro... Please."
"I will, Yu Yan almost never miss."

Your whole group comes up from belowdecks together, Pan and Lily quickly start climbing towards the Yu Yan, who is already firing. Unfortunately arrows are coming back as well... and you notice a bolt of fire coming across as well.

The captain has opened the arms room and a few of the crew members have armed themselves with spears and polearms, others have grabbed bows. A second ship has come into view and it's moving much faster than a ship normally would, you suspect there will be a waterbender or two aboard. Your vessel will impact with the first very shortly.

Don't try to weasel out of a bad roll, it honestly just irks me that you try to argue with me over out of it and makes me want to turn the roll into something more punishing than it would be. I won't do that this time because it's spiteful, but you've been warned.

You work on generating some power and with a few quick steps and a jump a twist and a kick you create a whirling whip of flame... but it fails to even get close to the other ship.

You land from your high-flying kick, and suddenly feel the attention of the pirate ships archers on you. You dodge the first few arrows with ease, but as your ships drift closer the arrows get harder to dodge, eventually one strikes you... but thanks to the work of the tailor and the armorer it strikes the edge of one of the metal plates sewn into your clothing, it does not penetrate far. Unfortunately it manages to strike the same area that Lao Len tainted your chi, and it sends a pulse throughout your whole body. You're not sure if the pulse was because of poison or if it was merely a result of striking the same area.

The Yu Yan in the nest fires arrows rapidly and you notice that almost every single one strikes a pirate archer.

Your ships are mere minutes from colliding, and the ship with the waterbender(s?) is still completely unscathed. You believe you can trust Ming and the Yu Yan to handle the other ship, even with the firebender still present.

Right, roll for leaping. Each haiku can be cashed in for a +2 bonus to roll, they can be split up or used all at once. Crit fails will still be crit fails and won't take away from haiku pool, Crit successes won't take from haiku pool either.

Current haiku pool is at 3 (for a total to +6 if all cashed in at once). This roll probably won't need it.

"Captain, I'm going over to the outrigger - It should burn within minutes. I trust your men and my allies can deal with the closer ship"

The captain acknowledges and shouts a few orders to his crew.

You fasten your staff to your back and with a few running steps you hop and kick downwards with both feet creating a huge jet of fire, punching behind you, you create two stabilizing jets of fire.... About three-hundred feet into the air your flaming pillar fades out. Throwing out wild punches and kicks you strike down a surprising number of the waterbender ship outriggers.

With a jet of fire, you narrowly dodge a spear of ice. Inhaling deeply you exhale a great blast of fire stopping your descent mere moments before hitting the deck of the outrigger.

You are faced with a waterbender in front of you and behind you.

You start with some basic probing attacks... and unfortunately that's a mistake as these benders are rather skilled. And based on their coordination they've been working with each other for a long time.

Narrowly dodging a blade of water from one, you're knocked down by a tendril of water sweeping your feet out from under you. A club of water comes smashing down towards you... and you roll out of the way before it can knock you into oblivion. You start to stand up as a man swings a club at your head, you wince and try to roll with the blow but it doesn't connect. An arrow sprouts from the mans neck.

Whispering a silent prayer to Lily and the Yu Yan, you prepare to face off against the bending duo again, the one in front of you has coated his arms in water.

So just to add a bit about haiku pool, just add +2 +4 or +6 to your roll (if there's that much in haiku pool) and If there's multiple rolls that succeed I'll take the lowest success with a bonus to it. If there's a crit success or crit fail I won't subtract anything from the pool.

If you choose not to add anything to the rolls and you still fail its a regular fail.

So please roll for lightning and you may add +2, +4 or +6 to your roll.

I'm sorry, its like betting, If everyone bets +6 and still fail (without crit fails) you still use up 3 points. If the lowest fail doesn't have a haiku boost on it no points will be used. If the only success has a +6 on it it takes 3 from the pool regardless of if it would have succeeded without pool or not. If there are multiple successes and one has no haiku spent on it, I won't subtract from pool.

I hope that's understandable.

You step into your low stance, gathering and seperating chi like you have many times before, the waterbender with his arms coated gets a rather puzzled expression and starts a grabbing attack and you ignore him. As his tendril of water closes in on you, you thrust your hand into it and unleash lightning upon him.

He screams and drops and the ship smells of ozone. The other waterbender looks absolutely furious, he draws the water up around him in a wall with tendrils sprouting from the top - something you recognize as 'octopus form'.

He seems unsure of what you did but is doing everything he can to prevent you from doing it to him too.

Turning away from the water bender you breath a great torrent of flame into the mast and sails, a few seconds later you're shooting a plume of flame straight into the deck, quickly burning through wood, and causing some of the things in the lower levels to catch fire as well.

Your provocation is successful and the bender lets a tide of water wash over the deck putting out the fires in the lower ship. As he does this you rush towards him with your staff and he pulls a signature water tribe club. A quick exchange and you have the man disarmed.

He tries to launch a spear of ice at you and you catch it with your bare hand and evaporate it.

A few short seconds later you toss the man overboard, and direct a small blast of lightning into the water.

Which is when you see a great shadow slide through the depths, moving towards the ship you came from. Looking across you see the handiwork of Ming and the Yu Yan clearly on display. Severed limbs and dead pirates chum the water.

Gathering yourself, you begin your leap back towards your ship, aiming for the rope rigging as you drop you come up close to the lookout where Pan and Lily are.

"I just saw something really big move down there, I think it was attracted by the blood in the water. You should get out of the lookout!" you shout.

Extricating yourself from the ropes you find the captain. "We need to get our people back on board, there's some sort of monster in the water" you start to explain.

Before the captain can respond or give orders a giant Eel-like head rises out of the water, the tendrils on its face crackling with electricity.

You know this creature, if only in myth and legend. Fire-Nation Oonagi. Eel-Serpent.
