Alright people, new crusader quest thread coming in here.

You are Jacques Fontaine, a French Knight who has gone to the Holy Land with King Philip II and Richard the Lionheart to reclaim Jerusalem.

You took the walls of Acre, you (just barely) survived the battle of Arsuf and saved the lives of a group of captured crusaders and a wounded Hospitaller knight.

As of now you are in the city of Jaffa, where the English King, Richard I has set up a base. Philip went home because he's a pansy.

In your party is a Teutonic Knight, Sir Fulko de Lorche; Sir Thomas Marshal, an English Knight of a mysterious past; Imad al-Isfahani, an Arabic scholar; and a peasant called Will who is pretty handy with a bow.
The Knight Hospitaller, Sir Baldwin de Carreo, is still in Hospital.

Standing in the marketplace with your party you
>look for some kind of work
>find out the general plan from the Higher-ups of the crusader army
>other (specify)

The old thread can be found here: >>25527010.

I dunno about archiving it, but if something thinks they should then feel free.

All newcomers are welcome, feel free to jump in.

In your inventory you currently have a bastard sword and a dagger, while your armour, helm and horse are all with your squire.

Your stats are:
>Str: 76

You approach Jaffa’s main keep with your party and ask the guards to speak with the Duke of Burgundy.

A few minutes pass and you are allowed inside to sit with the Duke.

“I can’t say I’m not surprised to see you alive…” begins the Duke. “We lost a lot of good men at Arsuf, and a lot of not so good men shortly afterwards. Still, it’s good to see a knight worth his salt seek us out like this. What brings you here?”

You fill him in on your escapade at Arsuf and ask
“essentially, we want to know what’s going on with the army. Is there some kind of plan, or does the King intend to sit in Jaffa until Saladin dies of old age? No disrespect intended, of course.”

“Of course…” replies Burgundy. “I trust that Arab of yours is honest?”
“He is, carry on.”
“The King intends to march on Jerusalem once these peace talks with Al-Adil are done. We set off in a few days.”

With nothing else to do, your party waits in Jaffa and departs with the army for Jerusalem. Many months pass with nothing of note, most of the time spent marching on Jerusalem and then retreating back to Jaffa when things got a little bit tough.

One night, however, as you move to relieve yourself you pass the King’s tent, and overhear angry whispers.

You
>investigate these whisperings (roll a stealth check [roll 1 d100])
>carry on and accept that the conversation is not yours to listen to, like a good little christian
>>

>>25532860
We're christian, but not that good, lets loiter and eavesdrop.
>>
Been following this pretty closely, this is awesome, OP. Thanks a lot. Though, isn't Isfahan in Iran, making Imad more likely to be a Persian or a Turk?

Anyway I second the eavesdropping
>>
You decide that anything that is worth whispering is worth hearing, so approach the tent as quietly as possible. You get in close enough to make out what it is they’re talking about.

The first voice you make out is that of the Duke of Burgundy.

“Sire, what you speak of is ungodly. Conrad is the lawful King of Jerusalem.”
“Be that as it may,” King Richard’s voice slides under, “he must be eliminated. His coronation undermines everything we are here for.”
“But that doesn’t mean we should kill him!” urges the Duke.

There are a few moments of silence where you hold your breath, heart in mouth. Nothing comes of it.

Finally, Burgundy answers.
“So be it, Your Majesty” he sighs. You hear footsteps and hurry off into the woods to finish your piss.

“An assassination?” you think to yourself, slowly. After you’re done, you decide to:
>consult with your party, though you have a feeling you already know what they’ll say
>confront the King directly (you choose when)
>confront the Duke of Burgundy directly (you choose when)
>volunteer yourself to the Duke of Burgundy to carry out the assassination
>flee for Tyre immediately to warn Conrad
>other

>>25532945
Thanks, I appreciate that!
Now that would be giving away the plot. Then again, it's kind of obvious anyway
>>
>>25532992
>Talk to Imad about his life
Like I give a shiiiiit about Politics.
>>
>>25533018
You're a crusader knight in the holy land, you just heard a plot about the assassination of the King of Jerusalem and you want to talk to a Muslim Scholar about his backstory?

Are you serious?
>>
>>25532992
Fuck Conrad. We'll volunteer for assassination, just got to try not to make it too obvious we were eavesdropping.
>>
>>25533058
YES I AM SERIOUS.
>>
>>25532992
I vote we confront the Duke. He seems a bit hesitant toward the idea and may be persuaded to withdraw his support. Confronting thr King himself might just get us shackled, at best.
>>
It occurs to you that you haven’t even heard of this King of Jerusalem, and King Richard may be right. The crusade depends on retaking the Holy Land, and a King of Jerusalem who doesn’t even hold Jerusalem will probably just get in the way.

Whilst you shake the drops of urine from your penis your thoughts drift to Imad the Arab, and you stand there confused over this new feeling.

“Where did he actually come from?” you think to yourself. “No scholar just sits in an inn while a huge battle rages around him…”

You push that thought aside for the morning and follow Burgundy back to his tents, discreetly.

>I’ll let you guys think of what Jacques will say to the guy.
>>
>>25533182
Sneak into his tent, Grab him by the throat
'I noticed you were arguing with the king, that sucks.'
'Maybe I can be your regent tonight?'
>>
>>25533182
Maybe we should learn a bit about this deposed King?

Whether or not he actually needs to die.
>>
>>25533255
You decide more needs to be known of this "King" before you can act on this information. But you're not sure where to get it.

You ask
>Burgundy (but be discrete)
>Your party (wait till morning)
>Other
>>

>Imad
>>
>>25533312
Ideally, both points of view, but might as well ask the duke seeing as we've stalked him to his tent.

>>25533349
Before the Duke enters his tent you call out to him and catch his attention.

"Ah, Jacques, what brings you out at this hour?" he asks nervously.

'I couldn't help but overhear the conversation between you and the King...' you begin., but the Duke quickly goes for his sword.
“No,” you cry out quickly. “I know you aren’t in this affair wholeheartedly. I’m not sure what to think either. By God, the first time I heard about this Conrad was in that very conversation.”
“Then why are you here?” he asks tentatively, not releasing the sword.
“I want to know why,” you say. “I want to know who this man is, and why the King wants him gone.”

Burgundy pauses for a while, and eventually resigns himself.
“All right then, come inside.”

Politics and geneology are discussed well until dawn, most of which largely irrelevant. But you do learn this:

The previous King of Jerusalem, Guy de Lusignan lost his claim to the throne when his wife, the sister of Baldwin V died. The rightful heiress then proceeded to marry Conrad, thus making himself heir to the throne, through much scandal and divorce.
King Richard supports Guy as king (as Guy is a vassal of King Richard) and there have been arguments between Richard and Conrad since the siege of Acre and Philip’s departure from the Holy Land. Just today, the King received word that the Barons of the Kingdom of Jerusalem have voted Conrad to be King, and due to their personal disputes Richard believes that Conrad will do everything in his power to undermine the crusade, and Conrad has already opened negotiations with Saladin.

With this new information, you decide to
>offer to help with the assassination
>offer to help save conrad from assassination
>remain neutral in the affair and do not act, remaining a knight in the crusade

All right guys, that's as simple as I can break it down really. If you want any more info just ask (or google it, but that could spoil future plots seeing as this is a sort of historical campaign).

You listen attentively and once the Duke is done talking you speak again.

“I understand. Ultimately, I am not a man of politics and it is not for me to say which King lives and which King dies. Let Richard do as he wills, and God shall decide how the world will lie.”

The Duke sighs. “So be it then. I had hoped you would give me something, Jacques, but in the end you’re right. Now, return to your duties.”

You bow and leave the tent to return to your party, where you find the others all up and ready.

The next few days pass as normal as the army marchesback to Jaffa. Terrible weather and dissent among the leaders has caused the army doubt and the assault on Jerusalem was called off once more.

News reaches the army of an assassination in Tyre. Conrad was killed just hours before his coronation by an unnamed pair of Hashashin, right in the middle of the city. You manage to make this look like news to you, but you can tell Imad suspects something when the Duke of Burgundy spends all day looking like he was hit by a medieval bus.

That evening as the army makes camp, Imad confronts you.

You hear a rustle in the bushes ahead of you, but before you can even react an arrow strikes you in the lower leg. The shock knocks the wind out of you, and you are clobbered over the head before you can scream. Rendering you unconcsious.

You awaken in shackles. The arrow is still in your leg and the pain is agonising, almost unbearable. Around you are dozens, if not more, christian prisoners.

You can barely move. The arrow in your leg means that you can’t even roll to the side, let alone stand.
That doesn’t mean all is lost, however, and the guard that stooped to crack Baldwin on the head hasn’t risen up yet. You take the opportunity to wrap the shackes around his neck and yank hard. The guard is brough to the floor with a sickening crunch and the shackles break apart in the act.

You take his keys and immediately set to unlocking your party.
“Looks like I owe you another rescue,” laughs Will. Baldwin grins as well when you undo his shackles.
“Where the fuck is Imad?” you ask.

“Guards took him off when they realised he wasn’t quite as white as the rest of us,” said Baldwin.

Fulko heaves you over his shoulder and tosses the keys to a nearby prisoner. “Get out,” he growls. “Quietly.”

“Where to?” he asks you.

Baldwin grabs the dead guard’s blade and you set about finding where all your gear is. After a bit of snooping it appears that it was all left at the tents, including your armour, and that’s about half a mile south in Jaffa. The Saracen army overran the camp before anyone had a chance to even get dressed, and though some questioning of prisoners you determine that King Richard himself has been killed.

The only weapons lying around are the dead guard’s sword, and Fulko has his arms too full of you to be of use now anyway. You check your belt and remove the small dagger you keep on your person at all times, and toss it to Will. Thank fuck you looted Acre.

So your party is essentially Baldwin and Will with a little dagger. Any confrontation would pretty much end in your deaths, so it’s time to get your sneak on.

“We need to find Imad,” you whisper. A quick look around determines the Saracen camp looks like this, where the prison is outlined by a low wooden palisade patrolled by guards.

Using you as a makeshift battering ram he crashes through the wicker door that holds the armoury and immediately sets about throwing weapons out to the crusader prisoners, many of which have now freed themselves.

The crusaders form a column and begin to cut a path straight up the centre of the camp towards Saladin’s tent.

You are surrounded on all sides, and it is obviously a suicide mission, but killing Saladin could very well end this Holy War for good.

Before you can make it past the palisade however, you hear a familiar voice above the din…

“توقف!”

The Saracen army stops their attack and steps back, forming a ring around the crusaders. And there, just outside Saladins tent, sitting atop a horse and bellowing:

Fucking Imad.

He dismounts his horse and approaches you.

“I,” he says “am Muhammad ibn Hamed Isfahani, Salah-ah Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub’s personal doctor, scribe and biographist. Among other things.”

Your jaw drops.

“I promised you that I was a friend, and I am good on my promises. Saladin wants each of you executed, but with the Crusader Kings dead, I have convinced him of mercy. You may all leave now, and none of you shall be harmed, provided you do not take up arms against us again. Go home to your families, your cause is dead.”

“Fuck you, Imad. Seriously, just fuck you.”
You pull a sword from the hands of Baldwin but before you can do anything with it you hear the blast of a warhorn to the west.
