So, I've been reading up on the VC1 artbook I recently got and find out some crazy shit that never made it to the final game, like armored velociraptor cavalry, battlemechs, airships, and little chibi sturmtiger edelweiss. Also, to my amusement, Darcsens were originally going to be a race of cat-eared people, so in some twisted alternate universe, Tarin, Heloise, and Artya would've been catgirls...

Anyways, back to the subject at hand! We're back to CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE TIME!

You are ISOLDE REINHARDT, a Belkan Knight and the current holder of the title "The Wolf of Kursk".

Currently, you are leading the spearhead of an Imperial offensive into the heart of Yuktobania. However, while you have been victorious so far, progress has been slow. Unlike the Oseans and Ustians, the Yuktobanians actually tried to build up large forces of heavy armor. While tending to be very expensive and overengineered with questionable reliability, Yuktobanian tanks were proving to be more than a match for Imperial tanks in head to head battles.

Also, there was the issue of supplies. Your intial victories against the Federation meant you've outrun your supply lines as well as your fellow advancing units, meaning your short on supplies and your flanks are exposed. Normally you would have stopped here to consolidate your gains, but you've recently come into conflict with an Imperial officer.

You've never had a high opinion of Imperial soldiers. The majority of them were conscripts who were poorly trained and poorly motivated, but at least they were disciplined and recognized authority. No, it was the officers that were constant headaches, always questioning your authority. In particular was a General Lucius Geld, more boy than a man (in more ways than one). You could swear he was only a little over half your age.

Technically, you had command authority due to your seniority, but Geld had a lot of influence among his own troops, which comprised the bulk of your force, which meant you unfortunately couldn't COMPLETELY ignore him.

"What's the meaning of this?!" Geld sneered as he approached you. "Why have we stopped? The Federation is retreating and the field is ours!"

We said we'd consider his request, which we will.

We never said we wouldn't then dismiss his request as stupid and proceed to do the intelligent thing.
>>
>>25537206
"No. We will hold our ground and consolidate our gains." You say plainly and sternly. "The Federation may have retreated, but they will be back, and in greater numbers. We have been advancing nonstop for over two weeks already, and our men need rest and supplies."

"You mean MY men." Geld snorts.

"Let me remind you that I am still in overall command of this offensive." You say, adding a hard edge to your voice and giving him a bit of a deathglare. "We will hold position until we can reestablish contact with the rear lines."

Grunting something about being in his tent, Geld sulks off without even giving a proper salute.

I doubt Isolde is THAT old and from the sound of her backstory, his parents retaliated against her for letting the imperial officer in her watch die (likely Geld)

Normally, you'd call out such a display of disrespect, ESPECIALLY if it was coming from one of your own squires or knights. However, you have bigger problems to worry about than decorum. Mainly, figuring out how to fortify your camp against the inevitable Federation counterattack.

You see some of Geld's retinue, pretty much just junior officers unlucky enough to be under his command, are still milling about, unsure of what to do. While you're pretty sure most of them are just shameless sycophants, there's the possibility there might be somebody in the mix who actually knows what he's doing.

You decide to go check in on the regular Imperial soldiers under your command. Moving down to the edge of the camp, you can see that the troops are already busy digging trench lines and earthworks. Not surprising, as this procedure has been drilled into them over the past few months as you advanced through Yuktobania.

Their overall morale is... okay to say the least. The heavy casualties they been suffering so far has made them all feel disposable and worthless, but the fact that you've been winning proves to be the thread that keeps their spirits up.

"Knight-Commander Reinhardt!" One of the soldiers recognizes you as you stride through, instantly saluting. "I-It's an honor! What brings you out here in this part of the camp?"

>I was just passing through. Keep up the good work.

"Actually, I was wondering what the general mood here is for you and your fellow soldiers." You say. "A good officer should always know what her troops are thinking."

"Yeah, as if General Geld cares." The soldier grumbles before realizing you heard him. "Um- I meant no disrespect to him, of course!"

"Relax, soldier, I don't have a high opinion of Geld myself." You sigh. "Anyways, what is your name?"

"Sergeant Balder." The soldier salutes again.

"Now, back to my question." You remind him.

"Right!" Balder nods. "Frankly, Knight-Commander, we're all tired. We've just been on the move constantly that we're starting to feel more like pack animals than people. I mean, it's nice that we're winning and all, but what good does that do if we all end up dying eventually anyways?"

"So you're saying that you think you and your men will all die on the front?"

"And get replaced by the guys sitting in the rear."

>I'm sorry, that's just the reality of things.

"Y-you don't have to be so generous, Knight-Commander!" Balder stammers. "You don't have to go through so much trouble for us!"

"I don't know how things are handled in your country, but in Belka, good soldiers are rewarded for their work." You say. "Remember that."

"We will! Thank you Knight-Commander!" Balder says happily.

"Good, now dig those trenches deep and build those earthworks high. I expect we'll be needing to put them to good use soon."

"Right away!" Balder salutes you and then scampers off to his squad, no doubt to spread the good news. You're not sure if you could actually fulfill that promise, but you'll damn well try. These men deserve a bit of hope, after all.

It'll be dark soon, meaning you don't have much time left to organize the defenses.

You decide that the regular soldiers could handle themselves. You make your way back to the section of camp where your knights and squires have settled. You see that, as expected, they've already started their own preparations for defense.

Seeing you arrive, your most senior knights, Sirs Renald, Theold, and Dietrich instantly materialize at your side, ready for orders.

"You orders, Knight Commander?" They ask.

"Make sure at least half of our men are awake at any time. Set up a sleep rotation. I would rather not get caught in a surprise night attack with no knights available. Should any battle start, you are to hold back as a reserve to reinforce any part of the line that is faltering. Is that understood?"

"Yes, Knight-Commander!" Your knights affirm.

Now, you're left wondering what to do for the night.

Well, you weren't particularly tired, but you didn't want to make your knights worry by seeing you out in the field when you should be getting rest, so you retreat to your tent and instead begin to study the maps and scout reports of the area.

Fortunately, you've managed to entrench yourself on a rather high hill overlooking a wide plain, giving you a commanding view of the surrounding terrain. Any movements by the Federation would be easily spotted. However, the wide open terrain also meant their more mobile armor had more options to attack from, which a skilled commander could use to slowly sap your fighting strength with continual pressure. However, you've yet to fight a skilled Federation commander so you're not overly worried about that.

The biggest sticking point, however, was the nearby town of Vorla, which was a handful of kilometers away. The Federation could easily use that town as a staging point for any counterattack, and your forces don't have adequate artillery support at the moment to put any pressure on the town. It would be something you'd have to deal with eventually.

Thankfully, the scout reports are more encouraging. The severe losses the Federation suffered means they have to replenish them before starting a new attack, meaning you've probably got at least a couple of weeks of breathing room.

"Knight Commander!" Sir Ranald. "We have a problem!"

"What's wrong?" You ask.

"A Sergeant Balder has arrived, asking for an audience with you. He claims the matter is urgent."

"Let him in." You say.

Sir Ranald nods and steps aside, letting an out of breath Sergeant Balder to enter the tent."

"Ranald. Balder. With me NOW." You say, striding out of the tent. "Balder, explain what is happening."

"I... I don't really know. All I know is that some of the officers were running around looking for "volunteers" for a "special mission". Me and my squad managed to avoid them, but others weren't so lucky. Scuttlebut is Geld is trying to lead some sort of offensive."

"How many men has he rallied?"

"I'm not sure!"

Unfortunately, by the time you reach the edge of camp, it's too late. You can see a small column of Imperial troops marching on Vorla.

"That idiot..." You scowl.

"Judging from the size of the column, he doesn't have any more than five hundred men and a dozen armored vehicles." Ranald judges. "It would hardly dent our defensive strength."

"After what you said, Knight Commander, a lot of the guys were keen on following Geld out. Even a bunch of his officers 'overslept' to avoid him." Balder adds in.

"We're going after him, right now." You say. "Ranald, Balder, you're both coming with me. Balder, I need you to bring two of your best and most trusted men."

"Right away, Knight-Commander." Balder nods.

In ten minutes Balder comes back with two of his men and you secure a kubelwagon for transport. Sure, it wasn't as menacing or as powerful as your tank, but time was of the essence and you needed speed more than firepower.

"You realize that I cannot guarantee any of your safety." You say to Balder and his men.

"We'll follow you to the end, Knight-Commander." Balder assures you.

"Ranald, as fast as you can, please." You order.

You have to give Ranald credit, as he certainly knows how to push the little Kubelwagon far beyond its limits. With a loud roar the car surges across the plains, bypassing the Imperial column and sliding to a stop right in front of the lead vehicle, where, unsurprisingly enough, Geld is "leading" his men.

"GELD!" You yell, standing up on your seat, arms crossed like an angry mother. "Explain he meaning of this!"

"I'm doing what you're too cowardly to do!" Geld yells from the hatch of his tank. "If you won't take the fight to the Federation, then I will!"

Seen men around you scream, cry, pray, and die as they are shot, stabbed, bombarded with shells and try to crawl into the mud in hopes that it will buy them a few extra seconds of life.

Because if you continue your foolhardy assault that is what is going to happen to you. You will have the blood of 500 men on your hands, and most likely die in a horrific way. Do you know how long it can take to die from a gut wound? Days, days of constant agony. I would wholeheartedly advise that you stand down."

You decide to ignore Geld for now and appeal to his men instead. After all, an officer was only as powerful as the men willing to follow him.

"Men of the Empire!" You yell, looking at each and every soldier in the eye. "Why are you here? Why do you fight? I'm sure you all have your own reasons, but I can tell you right now, you will achieve nothing following this man!"

You point an accusatory finger at Geld, and the soldiers begin mumbling and looking at each other.

"General Geld doesn't care if you never go home to see your families again, or leave loved ones behind to fend for themselves. He would have you all walk straight into the meatgrinder to improve his own image! Now tell me, is wasting good men like that not tantamount to treason? Would you follow a man like that?"

You narrow your eyes and and stare down each and every soldier you see.

"Well?"

You see the mumbling between the soldiers increase in volume as they begin to consider your words. You can see that your speech is working, and that they are considering your words.

"N-NO!" Geld stammers. "Disobeying a superior officer is a CAPITAL OFFENSE! I will shoot anybody you tries to desert!"

However, Geld's words fall upon deaf ears. Pretty much the majority of the men begin to disperse and make their way back to camp.

"Fine! You'll be punished, then!" Geld screams, preparing to fire his tank's cannon.

"Not so fast." You say. In a blink of an eye, you're already on top of his tank, holding your sword to his throat. "You so much as twitch and you'll be short a head."

"T-this is treason!" Geld gulps, but makes no further moves.

"Oh? Least I checked, I'm still your superior officer, which means all I'm doing is administering corporal punishment."

Finally, the majority of Geld's men have dispersed, and are safely out of range of his cannon. There are still a few, about twenty to thirty men, who are either too indoctrinated or too stupid to abandon Geld.

"Fine! I don't need any of them!" Geld spits. "I can do this myself!"

Geld attempts to resist, but you're already prepared, grabbing the back of his head and slamming it into the steel hatch of his tank. Stunned, Gled is powerless to stop you as you physically pull him out of his tank and dump him unceremoniously on the ground. You turn the soldiers still present.

"The General is very tired and would like to rest in his tent. Please see to it that he gets there."

The soldiers don't need to do any second guessing and promptly pick up Geld and carry him back towards the camp.

"Ranald, please commandeer this tank and make sure it reaches the camp intact.

"It will be done." Ranald nods.

"Y-you just beat up a General!" Balder gasps.

"I was well within my right to punish stupidity." You say, taking the kubelwagon's driver seat.

The next few days are uneventful. There's some sporadic artillery fire as the Federation attempts to harass your position, but their main forces keep their distance. Geld, still fuming over his embarrassing defeat at your hands, is still holed up in his tent and doesn't seem to be coming out any time soon.

On the bright side, morale appears to be at an all time high. The first resupply convoys have finally caught up, which means reinforcements aren't far behind. The men here can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

However, you momentary bliss is disrupted by Ranald's clanking armor.

"Knight-Commander, we have a situation."

"If it's another one of Geld's temper tantrums I have no time for it."

"It's not that." Ranald says. "Balder's squad caught trespassers. He's asking for advice on what to do."

"I'll be right there." You sigh. With Geld out of the picture, you've had to handle a lot of micromanaging, since his officers simply were up to the task. You make your way to the center of the camp, where you easily see a dozen men and boys sitting glumly under the guns of Balder's men. However, none of these men were armed, nor were they wearing uniforms.

"They're civilians, Knight-Commander." Balder says, scratching his head. "Wasn't sure what to do with them, so I figured you would know."

"We execute them, of course!" A very familiar, and very irritated voice echoes out from behind you.

Seriously? Of all times for Geld to come crawling out of his hole, he had to come out NOW?

"These people are obviously SPIES!" Geld huffs, marching straight up to the prisoners. "Of course they're dressed as civilians! They want to trick you!"

"No! We're not!" One of the prisoners speaks up. "The Federation soldiers took all of our food! We were just hungry, that's all! We have women and children to feed, too!"

"LIES!" Geld kicks the man in the face, knocking him into the mud.

"GENERAL GELD!" You bellow, marching forward. "These civilians are noncombatants, and therefore will be released!"

"On who's authority?" Geld sneers.

"MINE!" You say. "As long as these men are in Imperial custody, they are under my protection!"

"And then they'll just flee back to Federation lines and sell us out!" Geld's hand starts getting dangerously close to his holstered pistol. "They've seen our camp! They've seen our men! They already have vital intelligence!"

"All they've seen are tents and no more than fifty men." You scowl.

"You Belkan Knights and your 'honor'. You have no idea how real war works!" Gled sputters.

"Geld, I suggest you go back to your tent. Now." Your patience for this man is quickly beginning to wear thin.

"No." Geld humphs. "You Belkan Knights love duels, right? Then I challenge you to one! The winner decides how to dispose of these prisoners!"

"Fine, I accept your challenge." You say. Honestly, you were tempted just to shoot him on the spot, but you still have your pride as a knight, something that a man like Geld could never have. "What is your desired weapon of choice?"

Geld's smiles turns into a devious crescent. "Pistols."

"I must remind you, that we knights are trained in all aspects of war, not just swordplay." You say. "I can shoot a pistol just as well as I can swing a sword."

"No matter." Geld scoffs. "Get on with it!"

Immediately, everybody clears out of the way, with your knights making sure nobody interferes. Ranald walks in with an exquisitely carved box, holding a pair of dueling pistols. You each take one.

"As per standard rules of the duel, you shall each take ten paces from each other, turn and fire." Ranald recites.

Easy enough, you think. The pistol feels heavy but familiar in your hand. This wasn't the first time you've done something like this.

Each pace seems agonizingly long, but you slowly count up to ten and turn...

Stop going full retard guys.

>>25542597
>Spare him

I think he got the point already. That and odds are he'd die some other way. Better to have it be incidental than intentional.
>>
>>25542696
and leave him alive, ready to backstab us when we don't expect it? nope
>>
>>25542665
This.
>>
/tg/ blood thirsty as ever. Pointless.

>>25542714
Let him. He's been proven to be a joke already.

>>25542728
Ha. As much as fool he is? He already has hard enough time wiping his ass. To back stab some would take a brain which he clearly lacks.
>>
>>25542665
Supported.

Seriously, you fuckers are clamoring to kill a helpless man.
>>
>>25542762
He is a General. However incompetent he may be, he has ALLIES. Which makes him dangerous.
>>
>>25542665
This.
>>
>>25542701
Better yet, plant the gun firmly on his head, proclaim the folly of his challenge, emphasize the consequences of his bravado, then fire, at the ground behind him
>>
>>25542762
And all those times when he'd run off, and get people killed, except for us being around? He wouldn't do that?

He is entirely capable of doing harm. The only reason he hasn't is we have been here. And we will not always be here, always be able to stop him.

Enough is enough.
>>
>>25542770
so an imperial general who still has loyal soldiers willing to forget the fact they are human beings at a moments notice means he is helpless?

why are you so stupid?
>>
>>25542597
> Spare him.
>>
>>25542597
Bullet in his foot. Should get him to think twice.
>>
>>25542728
Also where is the honor in this also? Hmm? Where? Isn't that what Knight is meant to stand for? Honor.
>>
>>25542762
Really, him being brainless is exactly what makes him dangerous. He's not smart enough to see why he shouldn't do something... Stupid.

>>25542823
The Honor is in killing a man, in a duel he challenged us to, to try and get us out of the way so he could execute civilians.
>>
>>25542813
Why do you have such a muderboner for a stupid kid?
>>
>>25542823
and what of the duels honour? you would bring that into question?

you would dishinour the Code Duello to let this pathetic excuse of a man to live and continue to cause us harm and act against us?
>>
>>25542597
>> Spare him.
>>
NO,Wait, we want him alive! More incompetent officers to lead the Imps means an easier war for the Federation!
>>
How about shoot his hand, that way he won't be able to ever hold a gun.
>>
>>25542823
in the middle of a Duel we are honour bound to complete? to walk away and not kill him is to dishinour the duel and shame both ourselves for failing to complete the duel, and shame Geld for being so spineless
>>
>>25542880
Well, technically true, but it's traditional and good-sport to act in the best interests of the currently played character, in my experience.
>>
>>25542857
>>25542839
He now a defenseless man. Not even wroth the ammo in the gun. And you do realize not all duels ended in blood. There would be no lost of honor in /not/ killing him.
>>
>>25542907
and what of the damage he will sow if we leave him alive?

going to be a bit meta here, but we already know that Isolde ends up with the Demons for killing an imperial officer in a duel over these matters, question if, where can we do the most good, kill this general, or some pathetic lieutenant we catch mistreating prisoners?
>>
>>25542907
Either way is honorable, agreed. But the practical thing to do is to kill him.

I like trying to play the middle course between what's moral and what's practical. It makes for interesting philosophical questions.
>>
>>25542947
We can't abuse that knowledge. That's foul play in the truest sense of the phrase.

At the moment, what Isolde does should depend on what the rules of dueling call for.
>>
>>25542979
>rules of dueling call for

And that depends on what versions of the Code Duello is used in the VC/Ace Combat universe, so its entirely up to Merc whether this duel must end in death/blood/harm (of physical or emotional sense)
>>
>>25542947
>going to be a bit meta here
And done talking to you. If you're really going to agree this action because 'ha META-KNOWLEDGE' then you have no ground to stand on.

>>25542949
Sigh. The issue I have with this one of personal honor vs duel codes. I would weigh ones personal honor over almost everything else. Here has is man that basically lost the duel because his gun misfired. One that he called for to shoot civies. The man has no honor and killing him like this only ends up soiling ones own honor.
>>
>>25542597
"Geld, I'm afraid I have no other choice. This duel must end." You say as you pull the trigger.

Geld squeals as the pistol is fired, but fortunately fir him, you were aiming to the side, directly at the ground. You notice a sudden musky smell as well.

"I hope this teaches you a lesson to respect your superiors." You say as you put the pistol away. You then turn to Ranald. "Release these prisoners and give them as much food as they can carry."

"Thank you!" One of the men cries. "May the Valkrur smile on you!"

Now there is the matter of how to handle Geld...

He's fool and damn hazard. But at least one we know how to deal with.

And besides we have more than enough to file a full report against him to really just kill any kind of career he had. Hell, we can pretty much could get him sidelined for the rest of the war. Good luck getting any glory then chump. I'm sure there's been crap we haven't even seen.

Hopefully, yeah, and I think we should try that. But for the time until the write-up goes through the bureaucracy and he gets stripped of his rank, and on the off-chance that fails to get him demoted, I'd rather hedge my bets and keep him around.
>>

"Geld," You say, standing over the mewling, crying excuse for a human being. "I believe now would be a good time to lay down some new ground rules. You are to stay confined to your tent, and you will make no more command decisions for the remainder of this campaign, is that clear? In return, I won't report any of this to High Command and embarrass you any further."

Geld looks away and grumbles and affirmative.

"Good. Now if you excuse me, I have real work to do." You say, spinning around on your heel.

However, it's at that moment you realize your mistake. All your life, you've lived among Belkans, so you never had much fear of being attacked in the back. But out here, where things like honor and chivalry were considered myths, such naive thinking was deadly.

"Belkan bitch!" You hear Geld snarl as well as the scrap of of steel against leather. You turn to see Geld lunging at you with his sword. You raise your arms in an effort to defend yourself, but it never comes to that.

There's a loud BANG, and Geld falls face first into the mud. He rolls over, gasping for air he'll never be able to breathe, on account of the bullet hole in his throat.

Balder drops his smoking rifle.

"Oh my god.. w-what have I done?" Balder stammers.

You look down and lock eyes with Geld. For a brief moment, you can see nothing but hate and rage in his eyes, but it slowly gives away to fear as his life slips away. Seconds later, he's as dead as any corpse. There was no amount of bureaucratic loopholes or paperwork tricks to get out of this one.

"Balder." You say. "Hand me your rifle."

The sergeant reluctantly hands you his rifle. You take it and remove the clip, and sling it over your shoulder. "It seems you lost your firearm. Please report to the armory for a replacement."

"Y-yes Knight-Commander." Balder says, fighting back tears. He realizes what's happening.

"Knight-Commander." Ranald whispers to you. "We could always say he was killed in battle, or by a Federation sniper."

"Ranald." You say calmly. "We've had no major engagements or sniper incidents for the past week, and all of sudden Geld... and only Geld... drops dead to one? Nobody would believe it, and I refuse to let a good man take the blame for my mistake."

"You don't mean-" Ranald's eyes widen.

"High Command will want to find somebody to blame, and I can't in good conscience pass the guilt to anybody else." You glare at everybody present, soldiers and knights alike. "You all saw what happened here. Geld was killed in the midst of an honorable duel between me and himself. Nobody else was involved."

"Knight-Commander, the King and the Grand Master have much influence in the Imperial court, but I do not think even they would be able to cover for something like this."

"I will gladly accept whatever punishment the King or the Grand Master will deliver to me." You say, determined. "Regardless of what the Empire will think, I will always consider myself a Belkan Knight."

----

Two weeks later, word of General Lucius Geld's death reached Imperial High Command. The Gelds demanded justice and a formal request for Knight-Commander Isolde Reinhardt was made to appear before a military court. However, all attempts by Reinhardt and her peers to have her tried in a Belka were rejected, and she was to be sent straight to the capital, in no large part due to meddling from the Geld family.

The day before she was scheduled to leave the Yuktobanian front, Knight-Commander Isolde Reinhardt disappeared. She was charged for first degree murder, disobeying a direct order from a superior officer, striking a superior officer, dereliction of and desertion. She was tried in absentia and sentenced to death in an Imperial military court. Belka, however, remained silent about the matter.

"I'm sorry things didn't work out, Knight-Commander." Balder says, trying to hold back tears. "It's all my fault."

"You did what you felt was right." You say sadly. "You would've made an excellent knight. Also, you don't have to call me Knight-Commander anymore. I'm neither, now."

"You'll always be the Knight-Commander to us!" Balder says, his tears now flowing freely. "To the end!"

You sadly salute Balder, and them climb into the back of the waiting truck. The very same Federation civilians you had saved agreed to repay your kindness by smuggling you into the Federation.

"All men! ATTEN-SHUN!" Balder roars. At his command, he and his men salute as the truck pulls away.

Now that you've left everything behind, you wonder what the future has in store for you now.

Yes, and if it Merc based it off the RL DeLisle, then out to 200m in the hand of a skilled marksman, but usually 75-100m

Its semiauto, but only good for 100-150 yards max.

>>25544299
If you're thinking of replacing all the rifles with them. Stop. The DeLisle was special use weapon. Our base rifle would be better for anything that isn't stealth ops.
>>
>>25544299
depends on Merc and how well we roll if we need to, but seeing how we rolled on the first one, I'd say a few weeks per rifle.

And its not like we need 50 of the things, 2 at most would be good, mainly because they are for sentry removal and quite close up work. its .45 ACP and Imps like to wear armor, so not great in a stand up fight
