Players have made an odd request of me.

In short, they want me to run a game that is "JRPG as fuck," one of the players' exact wording.

So, I guess I'm here to ask for suggestions of what is some nonsense I can throw in there.

Turn the descriptions on all the abilities up to 11, double the size of all and any weapons. Daggers now look like shortswords.
Railroad them. Huge long RP sections and even more DM cutscenes.
Give them patronisingly easy puzzles that they have to take to an NPC to 'solve'. At least one NPC or PC should be an emo.
There needs to be at least two katanas at some point.

Get tedious a few hours in and suggest a more fun game to play.
>>
Weapons should be, no, NEED to be absurd.

Do you see that sword?
It's got a trigger on it.
Why does it have a trigger on it?
Because you can magic shove shells into the hilt.
Why can you shove shells into the hilt?
To charge the weapon with magic. Pull that trigger and your weapon will light on fire and shit.
Why not just enchant the weapon?
Because then you don't get this awesome magic-trigger gun.

The Hero Yoshihiko is a love letter parody of Dragon Quest, though, and Dragon Quest isn't nearly egregious about its shit compared to other jRPGs.

If you don't include some Dragon Quest parody, can you really call it a JRPG campaign?

Sure, it's not as outrageously overblown as other JRPGs, but it's iconic.

Base the game off of the most crazy JRPG out there.
Dark Souls
>>
Start them off as 16-17 year olds. Have them all grow up together in a small town in the middle of assfuck nowhere where the biggest cause for celebration is the train that brings the mail and supplies twice a month.

Now drop some ancient horror on the town. Some slumbering monster locked in an enchanted marble vault by a great hero long ago that everyone in the current age has forgotten about but still regards as something unknown and potentially dangerous.

If they aren't already equipped and capable of combat by way of back story, have the unleashing of a monster also unleash some magic power (that affects only them, for Mysterious Reasons~) that gives them their various class abilities. Give each one (or have them come up with) their own signature weapon or maneuver.

Embrace the silliness. Flying airships, stuff running on pure rule of cool, surreal landscapes, crystals, more crystals, crystal-powered magical giant robots, tin can evil overlords, magical talking animals, steam magic robots... you name it, you include it.
JRPG-style combat can actually be pretty solid mechanics-wise, so there should be no problem with it.
Weapons, again, the sillier the better. Don't deny more mundane stuff (see: Steiner, FF9) but people i the setting aren't surprised at all with a dude who wields a buzzsaw-yoyo.
If you want stuff to get serious, do it. However a true JRPG party WILL find a way to screw the destiny - with friendship, mettle or something.

In short, run a campaign like normal, but remove the limiter on "crazy".

Also, the skills system has examples of goofy over-the-top shit. Like, with a DC 30 balance check you can walk on "the grains of sand in a desert storm." A DC 35 balance check lets you walk on clouds. A DC35 Jump check lets you fly, as in literal Superman-esque flight, for 3 rounds. Goofy over-the-top shit like this abounds.
>>
All I had to do was allow a mutation where certain tribes of people have animal ears/tails and remove restrictions on what hair colors were possible, since some members of my group wanted to have such things and I saw no ill of it.

Neither of these changed any game mechanics and I could run the game normally in every other way but by doing these two things I had players who actually refused to play because the game was suddenly too weeb.

Some people just like being mad I guess.

You can also switch 'Golden Sun' with 'Chrono Trigger'

I had a group a while back I DMed for that never played Chrono Trigger. I stole the opening of it and created a campaign based around it.
Had the opening carnival and boss battle as well.

Why not, right? The people who get mad about unimportant shit will be gone, the attention whores won't feel the need to focus entirely on looking special because it's not all that special to look special and might have to actually develop a personality to fuel their HPD, and the people who don't give a fuck get to not give a fuck.

Also, because then fluffy tails may be touched.

More than that, they will actually sell him better buzzsaw yoyos off the shelf.

No matter how ridiculous a character's weapon of choice is (and they will always have exactly one), there will be upgrades to it available.
>>
How about urban campaign?
SMT/ Devil Survivor/ Persona would be pretty cool.
A nightmare to stat all monsters though.
>>
If you're in a system with character classes, throw them out. Each character is his own class.
>>
>>25548918
FF8 was kinda neat in a way that you upgrade your weapons yourself.
There is also Mana Khemia and its crafting system which is all kinds of awesome.
>>
>>25548944
>FF8 was kinda neat in a way that you upgrade your weapons yourself.

The idea is neat. Too bad the upgrade system was both bare-bones and pointless. Each character had, what, four upgrades, and other than Squall's ultimate upgrade which gave him a better limit break, none of them did much of anything other than boost damage by an almost meaninglessly small amount. FF8 done goofed up by removing inventories in favor of that crap.

Speaking of inventories, you should offer a very limited number of equipment slots (something like WEAPON - HEAD - TORSO - ACCESSORY) and one of them should be "accessory", a multipurpose slot that stores anything from shoes to capes to necklaces to girly ribbons (which are the best item). Why can't you wear both shoes and a ribbon? Because you can't and that's why. Only one accessory per person.
>>
>>25548918

An idea a former DM of mine made:

Instead of buying weapons, everyone could have special gems embedded into their hand. The gems summoned one particular weapon attuned to individual.

Instead of getting different enchanted weapons, the gems could be upgraded through various means that caused the attuned weapon to be upgraded. (You kept the 1 weapon you were attuned with, but it could take on different forms).

I played a shadow using sorcerer in that campaign, so DM determined my 'weapon' was an umbrella.
Got an upgrade that allowed me to forgo using it as a weapon by choosing to open it which increased the DCs of my spells by +1.

Fun times.
>>
>>25548794

>>
Surprised no one mentioned this:

Save crystals.
>>
>>25549062
> Raise Dead
>>
One super important thing hasn't been mentioned yet: items that resurrect the fallen in combat need to be extremely cheap and easy to get in huge quantities (buy them from the potion shop basically for fifty gil), and in a hard fight it should be normal for everyone in the party to die six times. This is "death in normal combat doesn't mean jack shit" something that's present in almost every JRPG and very, very few western RPGs.

Of course, in plot-important moments the revive thingies just stop working for unexplained tragic reasons.
>>
Convoluted magic system involving emotions.
>>
>>25549062

You're absolutely right. There should be save points. Also tents that can be used to rest, but only at a save point.
>>
>>25549081

Good call. Most JRPGs do come with an inexplicable gimmicky subsystem that something, usually the magic system, is built around. I have yet to see one that people would like, but they're par for the course anyway.
>>
>>25549080
In battle you're just "knocked out" or "exhausted," not actually dead. You only REALLY ACTUALLY die in cutscenes.
>>
Also, you learn all your skills from your gear. You wanna learn Cleave? You have to go find a cleaver and kill ten guys with it.
>>
>>25549081
>>25549103
Play Ar Tonelico. You have to dive into the mind of your female singer companions and help resolve their deep-seated emotional baggage so that their magic becomes stronger.

Include lots of sexual innuendo surrounding the entire process. "You'll be my first dive," etc.
>>
>>25549046

Yeah.

DM also made it so that instead of spell components, magic was powered by tapping into different crystals based off the elements.

If you wanted to cast a water based spell, you needed a blue crystal. A shadow based spell, you needed a black crystal, etc.

The level of the spell determined what grade of crystal you needed and how much was 'drained' from it.
To cast my shadow form of 'Hold Person' (think Shikamaru) I needed to use a crystal of at least grade 3 or more. I could use a higher grade (like a grade 5), but then it would become 'duller' (and turn into a grade 2).

The other side of this was that if you shelled out a lot of money, you could get crystals with effects (like metamagic) already in them which allowed you to cast spells modified with it for free.
(A grade 5 quicken crystal could cast one level 5 spell quickened, or be spread out to cast 5 level 1 spells with quicken)

Everyone should be unreasonably young. 15-year-olds can be members of elite special forces or captains of the guard. 18-year-olds are seasoned warriors, generals and instructors. 30-year-olds are veterans on the edge of retirement. An exception are sages, who should be like a fucking hundred and have a beard that touches the floor.
>>
You should incorporate a parallel high school storyline. You know like the players save the world over and over from the worst demonic nightmares but still have to go to school and solve meaningless conflicts like club vs club bullying and who is gonna lead the committee for the annual Japanese penis festival.

I puked twice while typing this.

Have the bbeg kidnap the little sister* of one of the party members. Also be ready to homebrew an angst system that works like limit breaks. Midway through the game, the party can choose to do sidequests to replace said angst system with the power of true friendship and love, unleashing even more powerful combat tricks.

Not quite, by my recollection, but there is a gimmick regarding the chemistry between the PC and his singer. The more they trust each other, the stronger the singer's magic becomes. Hence the whole mind dive process: people they trust get to enter their mind and resolve their baggage.

It's my understanding that the Ar Tonelico series is exceptionally Japanese.

Oh, of course. D&D 3.5 has huge issues with save-or-die/suck spells for that reason. WRPGs tend to do it a bit better by having most status effects be effective but not completely crippling, so they give you an advantage but not one you can rely on too much.

A lone exception that comes to my mind is the Phantasy Star series. Instant kill techs don't work on bosses, but they do work on pretty much everything else... provided that you're using the right kind of instant kill attack (most of them target a specific "race" of enemy). It's still a meaningful choice between using them and spamming cheaper attacks.

One last thing from me and then I am out of ideas.
This one was also taken from that same DM (and the same campaign).

While the big story fights were done normal D&D style (grid, minis, etc), the random encounters and mini fights that we had while traveling in the wild were done in the turn based lines system.

We could choose what rows we were in and our AC changed based on whether we were in the front or back rows. (+2 to AC if we were in the back, -2 to AC if we were in the front).

Furthermore, you could only make melee attacks if you were in the front row, and only against the other front row... until you killed everyone in the front row and then you could hit the people in the back row with melee attacks. Ranged attacks/distance magic could be from front or back rows.

It was also assumed you could hit anything as long as it was in the front row.

If you had a reach weapon, you could hit the back row if you were in the front row even if you haven't cleared out the first row.

Magic bursts and cones were treated as if they affected different parts of the rows (just like a JRPG).

DM allowed the rogue to 'flank' but taking a turn to, as it was phrased: "select the 'flank' option against an opponent for this turn, and then next turn you are counted as flanking it."

There was other options you 'selected' as well. If anyone is interested I will list them out.

I liked it personally. It gave it a RPG feel as well as greatly sped up the random encounters.

Again. The big boss fights and major battles were still done normally, so we got best of both worlds.

Grinding. Everything is a grind.

Your first session should be four hours of fighting the same enemy. And all the players gain 2/5th of a level from it.

Next few sessions are the same until they level. Then they can fight the same enemy that looks a bit different.

All clothing and weapons should be impractical and ostentatious as hell.

The plot needs to be completely kindergarden level.

Honestly, i liked how FF8 dealt with that.

Just about any 'professional soldier' had an elemental force of magic bound to them that potentially gave them the ability to ignore bullets, enhanced speed, strength, magical ability and all sorts of shit. The reason melee weapons were favored was because with the enhanced strength and other abilities you had, it was the most efficient method of turning you into an absolute killing machine... at the cost of your memories.

Non professional soldiers got handed a gun and pointed at other non professionals.

Bangaa reportedly have such terrible eyesight that they often wear blindfolds as a fashion statement, they navigate crowds through other manners. They also make badass as fuck monks, knights and potentially ninja.

Nu Mou are just extra soft and fluffy for cuddling.

I might be tempted by a moogle ninja as well.

If anything Gria should have had Dragoons because of their clearly draconian heritage, but no lizards get that. Though Gria Hunters are not only the cutest class with their hoods, but are one of the best classes.
>>

Griaa are fun, if only because they can geomance and ignore terrain

>Not playing FFTA2 as predominantly hume/bangaa Knight Order, consisting of Paladins, Templars, Bishops, Moogle Knights and wrecking shit in the name of justice.

I think FFTA2 would work on 3.5e, PF or 4e just fine. There would probably no race/class limitations, but racial modifiers would probably encourage one set of classes than another.
>>
>>25549576
Geomance is shit, Ravager has faster Mpower growth than the geomancer. Also no Half-MP

>>25549572
Dragoon would be fitting, but I still think they need blue mages because nature and shit and assassins (or equivalent thereof) since they have no sneaky-like class.
>Gria Dragoon standing on top of something unreachable and only to jump on your face.

Hunters though? No half-MP for Ultima Shot.
>>
>>25549388
The craziest shit is that I'm pretty sure those words really do have meaning, but it's in the games frankenstein song language.
>>
>>25549602
Its not that big of a deal though, with Sneak Attack and innate flight they can get good damage during the turns it takes to get the MP up. Blue Mage Gria is fine, a good opposite to Viera Red Mage. The way I see Gria are they're really mobile attackers with a secondary ability to use magic, but having an extra magic class would help them and yeah sneaky classes. Gria Ninjas, you would never see them coming from above!

JRPG Protagonists, man. Max out your character in any western RPG and you'll still be carrying the Buster Sword in 2 hands.

>>
Random drops. When you kill an enemy you don't get what the enemy was carrying, instead you get a random drop.

You can also pickpocket enemies. This gives entirely different items from what you get from killing them.

You can bribe enemies too. This again gives entirely different items from either of the before scenarios.

Oh holy fuck, you just reminded me of something:

Legendary weapons.

To get a character's "ultimate weapon" or "ultimate equipment" requires going way out of your way and lots of jumping through hoops. This is made worse if part of getting a character's legendary gear involves an exceptionally rare drop from somewhere in the field, like from a particular monster.

Never use BESM. I know /tg/ loves some mechanically worthless systems, but BESM is utter shit. It's great if you want to stat out a character and write down all your abilities on your character sheet and then use them as prompts for freeform roleplaying with the occasional handwaved roll, but it's irredeemably broken - overpowered, underpowered, and the system obfuscates and lies to you worse than 3e D&D.

Use FATE or hell, Risus would be good. Something light, or at least something that works. Don't fall for the word "anime" written on the cover.

4e is pretty much a perfect base for FFT. Remaking all the FFTA2 classes would be an incredibly simple affair, if rather tedious. Adding a mana system like the one in the games is also really easy. Equip based skill system is, again, really easy but a bit tedious. It's one of those things that I keep telling myself I should get around to doing, actually. Big ol' mental checklist, and "Homebrew 4e into FFT" has been near the top for ages, but procrastination has stopped it actually being a thing.

And Ivalice really is a fantastic setting. Massively underappreciated in my opinion. Another reason I should get on with it, because my players are all huge fans of Ivalice.

>>
>>25552867
That's the thing. The plot in XII is *good*. It has interesting characters and locales, does some political intrigue really well, and all the checkboxes to make a good story are generally ticked.

But the protagonist simply doesn't fit. He's irrelevant to the story. He could be removed and it would make absolutely no impact. And it just sort of makes the whole thing distasteful. The plot is still good, but you don't get a good look at it because Vaan is jumping up and down in front of the screen.

Ashe would have made a better protagonist. Basche, too. Balthier serves more effectively as supporting man, but he would have been a million times better than Faggot McShirtless and his waifu Penelo.

Go play Legend
>http://www.ruleofcool.com/get-the-game/
Its basically 3.5 with more character customization (you basically build your own class) at the cost of the removal of multiclassinf (thus, after character creation, the only real customization is magic items, and feats. But its feats are actually USEFUL. Like getting a 15-20 crit range with a chain of 3 feats.

Buy everything in the game is turned up to 11. There is a kamen rider option for dropping into your customized class, complete with flying kicks.

Monks turn their fists into weapons. Not the 3.5 "you hit super hard with your fists". You LITERALLY TURN THEM INTO FUCKING ENCHANTABLE WEAPONS.

One of the options for the Sage class gives them a lightsaber that they are able to shoot spells through, and transform into different weapons.

One of the feats is literally grafting a fucking canon to your chest.

People trained in arcana can get a feat that lets them them swap an attack during an attack action for magic missiles, so they can shoot spells and swing a sword at the same time.

"Melee" range is 5 feet.
... Plus 5 more feat for every 5 levels you have, which is fluffed as just swinging your sword sends out shockwaves and laser beams and shit that hits enemies, and still counts as melee.

Its even got a thing called [Legendary], which is given to BBEGs and player characters in campaigns where they are meant to be superhero tier. it works by giving you something thats kinda like a feat, every 5 levels. Except SO MUCH STRONGER. HILARIOUSLY POWERFUL. One of them turns you into a giant, multi-square creature with only one weak spot (think shadow of the collosus, for your player characters), another DOUBLES the size of all area of effect spells except there are multiple variations of it that stack with each other, and if you take all of them, that 3x3 fireball you normall cast? BECOMES A FUCKING METEOR THAT LEVELS CITIES.

Really, the whole thing is over the top weaboo beatdown, for people who play 3.5.

Does OVA encourage you to mix up your attacks?

>>
>>25553528
Well, from what we've seen, you can design your own attacks with their own features and stuff, so ostensibly, you can create a varied-enough attack list where everything has its use and place. The new edition of the rules haven't been fully released yet, but that seems to be the idea.

Out of curiosity, what systems HAVE passed your "test?"
>>
>>25553528
Define "mix up your attacks."
>>
>>25553463
Also, drop the normal magic items. Dont allow them, instead, tweak the custom magic items rules.

It normally works on a point buy system. Enchantments are worth 1, 2, or 3 points. Lesser Magic items get 1 point worth of enchantments, Greater Magic items get 2 points, Artifacts get 3, Relics get 4.

NORMALLY the Gm just builds a weapon (weapon creation is just "pick ranged or melee. pick three weapon properties. Name your weapon. Fucking done. Over the top bullshit is super easy.) and then giving it the proper number of enchantments for that tier.

INSTEAD, give players the enchantments themselves, as item drops, and they can permanently apply it to their weapons, armor, and shields, between encounters. If a weapon has a number of enchantment points equal to a magic item tier, it becomes that tier.

BAM. YOU HAVE A FUCKING MATERIA SYSTEM.
>>

It's hard to watch Advent Children after having just finished playing through 7 again.

>>
Townsfolk MUST only have one line of dialog, that they'll repeat again if spoken to again.

There has to be 2 points in the campaign where you use totally different stats/rolls mechanics. (bonus points if it's to hijack a train or some shit)

Characters cannot use any of their amazing pseudo-magical combat prowess outside of combat.
>>
>>25550005
I was considering doing that as well, homebrewing up the racial stats for the Ivalice races (beyond just doing a lazy "veira count as elves" thing) and running basically a Chrono Trigger/FFV style campaign in D&D4.

>would've included a "time paradox arena" thing where the players once decently leveled could fight the teams of "PCs" from the FF games etc
>with GILGAMESH as a boss battle in there

Was he still a dick towards the end?

I know he was a glorious cunt in the beginning, but I can't remember any late game antics.
>>
>>25556315
"Let's Mosey" is from one of the last conversations he has with the rest of the party in the game.
And he becomes slightly less dickish after the whole "vision quest" thing, but he's still nothing like what they made him in KH/AC.
>>
>>25556348

Wasn't it the case that in KH someone (Hades?) fucked with his memories, which basically caused his KH mopeyness?

I'm pretty sure from looking at the costume he had in KH1 that it was originally meant to be Vincent in that role but they copy pasted Cloud's head onto him.

There should be a short cute race that is absolutely insufferable to work with, like Kender.
This race should have a game-breaking gimmick ability or just plain higher stats for no reason.

Gameplay and graphics wise it has NOT aged as well as the people who hardcore nostalgia over it would lead you to believe. That's why I replayed it, to test that.

OP, here are some tips to go along with some other stuff in this thread. I consider the following to be nearly essential for something to "feel" like a JRPG story:

>Kingdoms are a must
No matter the level of technology, there must still be monarchs ruling various territories. Constitutional, feudal, whatever -- but there must be people with crowns on their heads who are in charge of entire nations.

For bonus points, throw in some senates and republics (or even Technocracies and Corporatocracies!) as smaller, less-powerful nations!

>Corrupt kingdoms are also a must

To go with the above, at least one of the kingdoms should be somehow corrupt or undergoing moral degeneration. The kingdom(s) in question should also have been an upstanding nation (and, by extension, lineage) in the not-too-distant past -- this justifies any nefarious one-ups and conquests they manage to pull off on peaceful neighbors.

Bonus points if the source of the corruption is divine or magical in nature.

>Forgotten realms to discover and explore

Hidden kingdoms. Lost continents. Underground cities. Have the party, at some point, go overseas, underground, in the clouds, or all of the above to find someplace lost through time.

Bonus points if the technology in these realms is far different from what you'd find on the "mainland" (diesel in a magitek universe; nuclear power in a steampunk universe).

I hope all this helps! Try to post a story-time of the campaign, if you can -- I'd love to read about it!

Did that once. It was interesting. Putting spell effects on guns and swords, having a suit that levels up seperately to facilitate power armor, being able to summon homies. It was fun, I ought to get back to making that story and finish teh stats.

...I'm interested. Tell me more. Same setting and everything?
>>
>>25557875
Yup, same setting. Changed a few names to make them make sense to people not familiar with the series, like standardizing the names of the programs, spells, and the big ships.
We used d20 because it's easy, so I had the suits gain levels independently to make them like power armor. Everyone looked something like level 1 / suit level 4 very quickly, because games are more interesting at that level, but they would have gained their own levels eventually - I had some plans for some more original SMT shenanigans eventually.
I had some system set up for talking to Demons and recruiting them, but i set it up so that only "base" Demons that hadn't yet chosen a side, Prince, or otherwise had their loyalty chosen yet so that they wouldn't go around trying to make the entire underworld their waifu. by accident, though, one character kept acing the rolls for recruitment and ended up with more Demons to summon, so I knew I had to refine the system somewhat - I think they were charisma saves based on what the character's alignment and if they'd impressed the monster somehow.
>>
>>25558003
Oh, I had Alignment work like they did in SMT rather than in usual D&D. Law and Good had to do with the Angels, who were all into human technology, and Chaos and Evil were the Demons who liked magic better, just like in SMT. While their actions did dictate somewhat their alignment, it was more of a cosmic scale depending on what demons they would summon and how they'd power themselves up.
Oh, right, there were different suits available. It was to their advantage to stick with one suit, but there were different "sizes" of suit so that Armor Specialties weren't useless. However, bigger suits, in addition to being better armor, could hold a bigger computer and more gear, so they could run multiple programs. the Devil Summoner and Devil Analyzer programs were stock, but the light could have 1 more program, medium 2, heavy 3. Programs did what they did in the game, but they hadn't gotten much past a better HUD and the Minor Magic Program.
Right, I should specify the system. We used d20 modern, so stat-based classes. No magic, so they needed a Magic program to cast spells. Instead of using D&D spells, though, I used spells based on the games, so less magic missile more Dia and Agi.
In addition to Program slots, there was an R&D on their ship, the one that survives in the beginning, that would upgrade their stuff like in the game. With the first bunch of magic rocks they manage to make guns that don't suck, and with a bit of finding they find minorly magic sword, again like in the game. Guns with magic-rock ammo that shoot Fire spells, all that goodness. Finally, the biggest effect on both gameplay and Alignment was the option to "infuse with magic" and become a sorcerer or "Technolyze" and get cybernetics. Basically the same effect, but it would affect what demons would talk to you and give you different superpowers in different ways.
It was a lot of very odd rules, but in the context it actually worked very well all things considered.

Mentally, he might be 21 years old and, since it's partly made by Disney, there isn't any alcohol anywhere because think of how it might have a negative impact on the children playing it.

Because, obviously, since it's a video game, there aren't going to ever be any adults playing it, right? Video games are toys, aren't they? And toys are, strictly, for children, not adults.

I think I might have just popped a blood vessel typing that.

The game started out with the characters as soldiers getting ready for the Antarctic expedition. This was the fun part, as I was the only person in the room who had played the game. So I got to set up the scenario and sound all smart, but it was basically just the game as it is. I give them a basic training so that they get the suit and programs system, they gain their first "suit" level and they install their huds. They go into the space-time anomaly, and boom, everything goes tits up and the other 3 ships go missing. They go into freefall, I get to scare the bejeesus out of them with some invisible monsters that they watch kill half the crew. Their AI is compromised and it installs the Devil Analysis, I basically go through the game's intro and they get their first taste of Demon Busting. Then they all get put into a squad and told to wander - I mean explore the wilderness, basically the first ice cavern area.
Instead of treating it as a large map, I opted for a more transient map. They never knew where they were going, they could find landmarks again but when wandering random shit would be found.
Highlights include finding their first recruit-able Demon, Pixie of course. Everyone gets into a small fight trying to impress her, which made me smile a good amount on the inside and she helps school them on Demon Summoning and magic in general. The group ended up getting some more buddies, scrounged for some supplies which they used for their first upgrades, and end up going into the first real demon/dungeon area, the flaming township I believe? Where they get the bits to fix their AI and get a bomb to get to the next area. We ended it when they found the second ship, their Commander was killed by Eligor, and shit was pretty tense.
It was a fun campaign, everyone took to it pretty well and they had plenty to do. I'd like to pick it back up sometime, haven't thought about it in a while.

Quick note: "Good" and "Evil" don't apply in SMT; instead it's "Light" and "Dark". It doesn't quite map on to DnD style alignment; rather it denotes how the entity sees humans. Light demons think humans are to be protected, so don't attack out of hand. Dark demons think humans are delicious and can't be reasoned with. Neutral demons give zero fucks.

There are exceptions of course, individual demons can have different thoughts on the matter or make exceptions, and all demons summoned with a contract (through a COMP or Demonica or ritual spell) obey their summoner.

Rest of it sounds great; I'm the only one of my friends who likes SMT, of the rest of them only one has played Persona and the others just know I like it. Inviting them to a SJ game would be a lot of fun I think.

That's basically what I did, just used Good for Light and Evil for Dark. I was the only person who'd played Strange Journey so I just left a lot of the terminology in D&D.
I should finish putting those rules together, I'm sure I've still got them in some notebooks somewhere. I remember having plans, it was a blast to scheme because half of the scheming was done for me. Friends who don't play the game I'm ripping off are the best.

I've not seen a system yet that had actual rules for Combo Techniques besides "you can fluff one person delaying and you both acting at the same time that way".
>>
>>25564011
I'd rule it as an "aid another" test in combat, fluffed as a team attack.
>>
>>25564041
Yeah, that works, except to do it Chrono Trigger style requires more than that, because Combo Techs often have wider AOEs and/or different elemental damage types than the base attacks involved.
>>
>>25564056
I know how Chrono Trigger dual- and triple-techs work. How you fluff the team attack determines the difficulty of the "aid another" tests.
>>
>>25564041
>>25564056
>>25564084
As long as you rig it so that any "combo" using more than two people is of such marginal benefit over them all attacking individually that it's not worth all the delayed turns to set it up.
