You seek revenge against your nemesis, the Red Queen, who imprisoned you in an oubliette for four hundred years. She has established herself as the god of the Golgothan Empire, so you side with their enemies. To that end, you hope to unite the feuding Margellian kings against their Golgothan invaders, and to THAT end you've decided to investigate Whisper City, which fell off the map five years ago. No one ever comes back anymore.

You've nearly reached the haunted forest. Your Shade, moving ahead, actually has reached it, but can't see much because of how thick the trees are.

>wat do?
>>
what did we do with the phoenix? did we atleast make sure he doesn't rise from the ashes?
>>
>>25584679

You cut his head off. That should be good enough for now. Longterm, nothing on earth will stop him from coming back sooner or later.
>>
>>25584622
Our allies are in no condition to be braving a forest of probably quite paranoid Night daemons and anyone else that may still be hunting them. Could I get a recap of their condition and how long it will take them to recover?
>>
>>25585671
Likewise, shit. I didn't even know the quest was on till now because of no presence in IRC/Skype like normal.
>>
>>25585671
Also, our shade shouldn't just be looking, it should make sure it itself is visible. There's probably a better chance of being found than finding, and it's not like dying is a huge issue for it.
>>
>>25584813
I suspect dickery to be at stake with that guy. It IS a phoenix, and he was quite suicidal. It's possible he was just so distressed over the death of his big bro that he didn't care about dying as long as he hurt us, but nah, I'm suspecting he's got some trick.

Sorry for the delay, something came up I had to take care of.

In any case, Lark is completely inert. His throat has been ripped out, his face is maimed, and he's covered in several bite and burn wounds from the wyvern. None of them are terrible, but they tax his capability to heal that much more. It'll be two or three months before he's on his feet again. Mari has lost a ton of blood and it'll be a few days before she's conscious, coherent, and capable again. Girdin suffered a single fairly significant sword wound but is otherwise unharmed. He can keep moving.

>>25585813

Keep in mind that for daemons, death is a discomfort and an inconvenience, not the end of all. The traditional method for killing a daemon as dead as possible is immolation, but that might not be a great idea on a phoenix.
>>

Keep moving towards the edge of the forest and then find a suitably secluded area to set up camp until Mari is on her feet. Shade can keep doing >>25585715.

When Mari wakes up properly, ask her all about her experience with Quickening and make sure we are ecstatic about her being still alive + being that much more of a fun toy (Not that we're telling her that's why).
>>
>>25586225
I agree with this. I'd love to get in there ourselves ASAP because damn some daemon allies would be nifty, but we should at least stick around until Mari is conscious, part because it'd be easier on Girdin to have at least one of them conscious and part because actually being there when she wakes up would show that we actually give a shit.
>>
>>25586118
did someone quicken it yet?
>>
>>25586580
We can't quicken too often, or else Burnout occurs. I'll paste the relevant section from the Compendium about it:

The consequence of rampant Quickening is called Burnout. Burnout is a phenomenon that occurs when the formative energies from a prior Quickening have not settled in properly and are subjected to another torrent of incoming stolen Power. It takes several weeks for the new energies introduced via Quickening to solidify into something stable, and the chances are increasingly not in your favor to survive the infusion of yet more foreign energy with the increasing rank of multiple Quickening victims.

The effects of Burnout are severe. First, all Quickened power that is still settling in slips out of your grasp due to your soul rejecting it. Second, there is a fair chance that one of your Talents will randomly go down a rank. Third, there is a small but devastating chance of your soul undergoing a severe rejection. This means that one of your Talents and all associated powers are permanently lost to the ether.

Not something we really want to risk. Plus we're Common now, so Quickening a Hedge -really- isn't worth it.
>>
>>25586677
so let girdin do it. why not keep our enemies down longer?
>>
>>25586903
Girdin might not want the trouble that follows. It's bad enough for him to be fighting in the first place.
>>
>>25586903

Because Girdin gives a fuck about his reputation. Plus, he is also common, so he wouldn't really gain much from quickening a hedge either. And yes, I am continuously busy today, so we might not have much of a thread.

You find a place to hide out near the edge of the haunted wood. Hopefully it's close enough to scare off patrols but not so close that local Night daemons will decide you need to be dealt with.

It's only a few hours before Mari wakes up for the first time, but she's not coherent for another three days. Fortunately she's awake long enough to eat stuff, because you don't exactly have the ingredients for soup out here.

When she comes to for real, she tells you that the quickening was the second most painful thing she'd ever experienced, well ahead of all her cuts and scrapes but quite a bit behind being lit on fire, which was raw agony and then an even more disturbing lack of pain or any feeling at all. She still can't feel much (she says as she trails a finger across the scar tissue on her left arm).

In any case, the quickening gave her sudden knowledge. She said it was like suddenly remembering something she used to know how to do, though she has absolutely no memory of ever actually learning or doing it before. Just that it felt oddly familiar. Her first thought upon quickening was "why didn't I do this in the first place," and only later, when she's not dying of burn wounds, that she realizes it's because she's quite positive she didn't know how.

This isn't really how quickening works for daemons. Sometimes new powers manifest themselves within hours of the quickening, but that's really rare and even then it's not like remembering. It's like growing. Finding out you have a real knack for something. And it's never instantaneous either.

Weird.

Ask what she knows about this new power. What does it do, more specifically than "saved your goddamn ass", what the limits of it are, if she learned anything else. Also let her know that "I seriously have no fucking clue how or why that worked back there, but the fact that it did is literally the most exciting thing that has happened in millennia. Also a little scary."
>>
>>25587617
Oh, and any news from the Shade?
>>
>>25587617
Seconded if it need be said.
>>
>>25587364

Activate Clarity. Can we use it to "scan" ahead, or is it only activated when we have line-of-sight to someone?
>>
>>25589594
I think the way it works is talents actually don't do shit on their own, they just mean you can get the powers within that talent. Gotta wait until end of the chapter until we get a chance to get an actual power in Clarity.
