It's a bird! It's a plane! It's VALKRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Again, no pastebin available at the moment, so we'll just have to make do without it.

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You've decided that it's now time to move on to greener (or at least more profitable) pastures. You and the Demons left Albion for the besieged nation of Ustio.

Your first mission went well enough, routing a platoon of Imperial soldiers threatening the city of Valais' supply lines. Then you destroyed an Imperial superheavy artillery battery, taking pressure off the city's beleaguered defenders and giving them a chance to counterattack. You also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, and in return, he's given you a new and powerful (if only experimental) weapon! You also captured an Imperial sniper who you convinced to join your cause. You then managed to defeat the Indigo Heron, the Belkan Knight leading the Imperial forces in Ustio (well, technically, it was Isolde who defeated him, but the CO still gets credit!).

Well, for better or worse, the Indigo Heron's defeat basically meant the Ustio campaign was ultimately a losing battle for the Imperials, and that decisive duel proved to be the high point of the action. The next few months was nothing but routine patrols, interdicting supply convoys, and chasing down retreating Imperials. Honestly, it was pretty much grunt work, but at least Freyberg was nice enough to still be giving you work, which could have easily been handled by his own men.

However, this was a momentous occasion. Just a few days ago, the Imperials holed up in Solis finally surrendered, effectively putting an end to the Ustian campaign. With things seemingly settled here, you begin making preparations to return to Gallia. You made a promise to Sam, after all.

Also, what made this day special was that it was the Feast of All Spirits, a Gallian national holiday. Considering the Demons were nominally a Gallian mercenary unit, you consider whether you should get your non-Gallian Demons into the holiday spirit as well.

Well, you figure you can't FORCE your squad to celebrate the Feast of all Spirits, but you figure that you might as well let them know about it. Honestly, after months of monotonous cleanup ops, you figure your squad could really use an excuse to celebrate.

So, after a quick announcement over the base intercom, you assemble all of the Demons, including the Vergeltung crew in front of the barracks.

"Ladies and gentlemen. I realize that not all of you are Gallian, and you may not realize or may not care, but because this originally started off as a Gallian venture, I feel that I should inform you that today is the Feast of All Spirits, a Gallian national holiday that we will be observing."

"Um, sir." Ramirez raises his hand. "What exactly IS the Feast of all Spirits?"

"Well, Ramirez," You grin, "The long and short of it is that FoAS is time to strengthen your bonds with those you're close to, whether they be friends, or something a bit 'more'. It's also an opportunity to make amends with your enemies. Anyways, it's about celebrating friendship, so have at it. I've talked to Freyberg and he's given all of us a week's furlough. Go do what you want, but be sure to report back here in one week exactly, or we're leaving you behind! Got that?"

"Yes sir!"

Well, that means you probably don't have a lot of time before everybody scatters to the four winds. What are you gonna do?

Dmitri Petrovich
Mortar Crew Leader
Prideful - has had a very long service record as an artilleryman, has worked with the smallest knee mortar through to the largest howitzers employed by Imperials. Became a mercenary after the rout of Maximillian's army, his crew were all under Radi Jaeger's command during the invasion. Likes joining in with Ivan in singing when the oppurtunity arises.

Ivan Volkhov
Mortar Crew member
Cheerful - Served alongside Dmitri for the course of his military career, typically whistles old tunes whilst operating the mortar, in fact generally sings old marching songs or tuns at any turn. Rumoured to be a raging alcoholic, but given his peasant origins that sort of is a given, Dmitri is often heard screaming at Ivan for being drunk on duty. Attempts to remain sobre during fire missions. Has once tried dropping a bottle of vodka down the tube.

Alexei Miroslav
Mortar Crew member
Oppurtunistic - Worked as a supply officer before his company was thrust into battle, joined Dmitri's mortar crew reluctantly, but has found himself quite at home amongst the two men he's come to consider his brothers. Thanks to his experience supplying units on the front he's great at mooching munitions from anybody he can, more than once he's handed Dmitri a mortar round with hostile markings.

However... that's a lot of people, and gifts, to keep track of, and you're not sure whether you can handle it yourself. Then again, the more people you involved, greater chance the surprise will be ruined!

I know, let's talk with Penbury, maybe he swiped some Imp motorcycles in his sneaky git days recently and we could buy it. (or be gifted it ourselves, since we saved his countrymen) I think a nice motorcycle could make a nice gift for Isolde, a Knight and her steed.

We got Tarin that silence rifle, but, that was as a gift for her efforts. Maybe some nice new daggers? Maybe Elizabeth has a sykes stiletto we could get off of her? For our tanker, maybe a good kind of fan we could mount in the drivers seat.

You figure this task is a bit too daunting for you. You're going to need help. You're going to need somebody smart, competent, and able to keep a secret. You need somebody like-

"Sam!" You yell as you burst unannounced into her office yet again.

"What do you want this time, Cap?" Sam sighs, looking up from her desk. Behind her you can see Voytek glowering at you, as if he had forgotten he was just a stuffed animal and not a real bear.

"Sam, this is important. I need to get gifts for the squad, and I need your help."

"Oh, to figure out what sort of gift would be best for everyone?"

"I need somebody to help me carry all the stuff."

"Fiiiiine." Sam sighs, getting up from her seat.

Fortunately for you, Valais is a port town and very metropolitan. You can pretty much find anything you need if you look hard enough, and Sam was diligent enough to know all of the major shopping locations.

What you know:

Sam: Adjutant and close friend. Very kidlike.
Tarin: Quiet and aloof. Trained killer.
Brillant: Nice guy with bad sense of direction.
Heloise: Nice girl with a big sweet tooth and looking for a companionship.
Ramirez: Unstoppable force of nature.
Julia: Penny pincher who is much older than she looks.
Aleksandr: Shy but talented sniper who just picked up a girlfriend.
Elsa: Aggressive and competent tracker who has a thing for Alek.
Headcase: A bit of a loon, but highly talented at what he does.

Codom box. It is the only answer.

It's either a Siberian Husky or an Alaskan Malamute. They look rather similar when they're that young so it's hard to tell. Malamutes are a bit larger when full grown, though.
Personally though, I say a not!Caucasian Shepherd would be cool though. They're extremely loyal, and quite bright. Plus they're cute as puppies, and badass as adults.

Tarin: get her a new knife, a kukri sounds good. Make sure it's a damn good knife, not a cheapo one.
Brillant: A compass and a snazzy hat, I just think he'd look good in a hat. Or both.
Heloise: A multitool, a pile of duct tape, and some caramel.
Ramirez: The local equivalent of Sun Tzu's Art of War and a trench knife with his name his name on it.
Julia: A comfy sweater and a model tank.
Aleksandr: Two tickets to a show so he can take Elsa out on the town. A winter hat to remind him of home.

True. Still not a good place to keep something like that given a subs size even our very large sub. You try spending a few months with a dog crapping all over the place under water and see how you feel after a while. A attack dog however..But then we risk it dying and Sam crying over the poodle.

Im still pushing the Isolde Motorcycle, since we've more than enough storage for it, and a motorcycle can be very handy. If we get one with a sidecar (or Qyburn eventually crafted a utility one), she can store her lance in it

Does Isolde have a cloak? If not or even so, we could get her a really nice cloak, with a hood for when it rains.

So, after several hours of harrowing shopping, you finally round up a number of items you think will make your squad happy.

You find a large, exotic knife said to come from a nation beyond the Empire's eastern borders. It looks like some terrifying cross between a knife and sword, which you think would be a perfect gift for Tarin.

As for Brillant, you get him a fancy compass, just to poke fun at his poor sense of direction. Who knows, it might come in handy!

For Heloise, you buy a pack of Ustian candies, which are basically chocolates filled with a hazelnut paste. You're pretty sure she'd like it, and absolutely certain she'd find a way to reverse engineer it.

Ramirez's gift is a bit of a tough one. What do you get a guy who's already pretty good at everything? You settle for an old EWI weapon that is some unholy union of a brass knuckle and trench. You're sure he'd get some laughs (and use) out of it.

You don't even bother getting a gift for Julia. You might as well gift her ducats, since you have the feeling she's just going to pawn whatever you give her.

Alek is a bit tricky, but you opt to get him a good hunting knife due to his background. Also, as a joke, you get the biggest box of condoms you can find.

You get Elsa some wine, which would be useful in getting Alek to loosen up when she needs him to...

Since Headcase had a thing for music, you get a new record player and a whole stack of records.

For Isolde, you figure she must miss being able to ride around the countryside in style. Well, a tank is a bit out of your price range, but you see a surplus military bike that could act as a good stand in.

For Elizabeth, you get the trashiest, pulpiest spy thriller you can find, and wrap it up in a very fuzzy scarf.

You get Qyburn a very fancy notebook, with a very sturdy locking mechanism so people wouldn't be able to snoop in it.

>>
>>25594401
Okay, we need two layers of deception on this one.

First, we tell her that we need to get a few more gifts but we can handle it from here.

She'll probably spy on us so we don't actually get the puppy yet, sneak around, pop into a jewelry store and ask for a bag with nothing in it and for them to pretend to put a necklace in it or something.

Then we act like we didn't see her and pretend to head back, after that she should head back shortly, then we actually sneak off, lose ourself in a crowd, and get the puppy.
>>
>Keep it a suprise. Time for some misdirection!

"Well Sam, I think that's just abou- OH MY GOD, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!?"
>>
>>25594344
Aw, no camera for our superspy?
>>
>>25594401
You decide that it's a time for a bit of misdirection in order to keep Sam from figuring out what you're getting her. Sure, she'll most likely suspect something is up, but she'll never expect what you've got in mind for her, if you play your cards right.

"Damn, we're actually starting to get pretty loaded down here." You pant, setting down the bags. You don't really have to act much, you're actually pretty damn tired. "Hey Sam, how about you take what we god back to base, and I'll handle the rest of the shopping?"

"You sure, Cap? We don't have much left to get." Sam points out.

"Hey, I don't want to risk getting jumped by Sergeant McDouchebag while lugging all this stuff around. Just do this as a favor for me, please?"

"All right, fine." Sam sighs, taking your bags and slinging them into your borrowed jeep. "You need me to come back and pick you up?"

"Nah, I can find my own way back to base."

With that, Sam gives you a salute and speeds off. You wait for several minutes to make sure she's really gone, and didn't just double back to tail you. Confident she's gone for good, you get to work, heading for the nearest pet store.

But oh god, there's so many choices...

>tfw when the choice of what breed of dog to get Sam nets as many votes as any of the shipping choices
>Damnit, guys

You figure since Sam has a thing for bears, you'll get her the biggest, meanest, and fluffiest dog that you can find.

"Ah, then you would like this one!" The elderly pet store owner pulls a fat little ball of fluff out of one of the holding pens. "These little guys can grow as big as bears! The mountainfolk love this breed since it's good at chasing away mountain predators like bears and mountain lions. Very nice, intelligent, and excellent guard dogs."

"I guess that'll do." You nod.

You manage to catch a taxi back to the base, careful to make sure that you keep the puppy hidden away from prying eyes, especially Sam. There were few people around here who could be trusted to keep the secret.

So how do you want to handle the gift giving?

You decide to hold onto the puppy for last. You rope in a random Vergeltung crewman to hold onto the puppy for you, giving him a hundred credits for the trouble, and threatening him with a very painful death if he let Sam see it.

Afterwards, you manage to gather the Demons n the barracks.

"Well, everybody," You say, standing proudly at the center of the room. "to celebrate the holiday, as well as your holiday plans... PRESENTS FOR EVERYBODY. Because honestly, you are all amazing people and you all deserve this much!"

Tarin picks up her new exotic knife, her eyes picking up an evil gleam to them. You already pity the poor Imp she's going to test it on.

Brillant just sighs when he gets his compass, with the other Demons getting a goodhearted laugh at his expense.

Heloise squees upon seeing the chocolate hazelnut candies, popping one into her mouth as she tries to determine the ingredients.

Ramirez whistles as he see the EWI trench knife/knuckle, and gives it a few practice swings.

Julia carefully slides the envelope of ducats into her pocket.

Alek likes the knife, but turns a bright shade of red when he finds its buried inside a large box of condoms. He slams the lid shut as everyone gets a good laugh at him. Elsa, with the wine bottle in hand, slides up next to Alek and whispers something reassuring in his ear, which only serves to make his face even redder.

Headcase nods sagely at the new record player you got him, and immediately sets it up so it can play right away. You can already tell he's figuring out ways to bolt it onto Kilroy.

Isolde looks like she's about to cry again when she sees the motorcycle. She finally has a mighty steed to ride again.

Elizabeth sees the scarf-wrapped book and smiles, stating the title of the book you got her and thanking you, since she hasn't been able to read it yet. You don't even try to think how she figured it out.

"A gift? For you? But Sam, you get the greatest gift of all, the eternal pleasure of my company." You then pick up Sam in a big bear hug. Meanwhile, you surreptitiously wink at the crewman holding the puppy and he rushes forward while Sam is distracted.

"But no, that's not the real present. Your real present is PUPPIES."

You put Sam down and spin her around to show her the new puppy. You swear you can see Sam's eyes widen to the size of dinner plates and she gives the most high pitched squeal possible.

"OHMYGODHESSOCUUUUUUTE!"

Her squeal catches the attention of the other Demons. These hardened war veterans and borderline psychotic killers, who've faced the horrors of war on the battlefield for years, are competely sucked in by the infectious cuteness that is PUPPIES.

Yes and the thing with Karla might risk this.

I'm too busy imagining Clerks in the VC universe
>>
>>25596596
Very true in most things, and usually to some other girl pushed as the main.
>>
>>25596571
We don't have any evidence that that is the case with Jaeger either but that's not exactly a counter argument. The childhood flashback showed that Jaeger seemed a little uncomfortable with Karla's behavior but that's not much to go off of, especially since it was before their relationship.
>>
>>25596620
usually a bitchy tsundere, right?
>>
Well, until we get the whole picture on what the hell Karla is up to, I guess we'll have to try to balance our feelings of Sam and the ambiguity of Karla just like what Jager is doing right now.
>>
>>25596596
Well that's was the romance winner in VC1. Of course she was also a super sue, but she was that cute, reliable XO.

>>
>>25596426

>>
>>25596724
Maybe a STR bonus after a certain amount of time using them.
>>
>>25596724
+1 tough or something from training would be cool.
>>
>>25596602
The comparison rings hollow, because Caitlin regularly cheated on Dante, AND it was stupid high school dating bullshit.
What Karla and Jager had was clearly a much more serious relationship, and to the extent of Jager's (and our) knowledge she was always faithful.
>I'm too busy imagining Clerks in the VC universe
Well then, try to imagine Chasing Amy in the VC universe for a moment. Remember Bob's story. He fucked up his one chance at real happiness, at "true love" if that's your thing. While the magnitude is far different (Amy just had a menage a troi in the past and Bob couldn't handle that, really not to the same degree), he fucked it up because he didn't want to listen, he just felt hurt, and wanted to hurt back.
>>
>>25596747
Tough is our primary stat and agility is our secondary stat. I think +1 to Str from training would be best to actually modify our melee damage.
>>
>>25596426
You don't even have words to thank her with. Instead, you just pick up Sam with another huge bear hug.

"Thanks a lot, Sam." You say.

"Aw, it was nothing." Sam giggles.

And for one of the few times since your home was destroyed, you feel genuinely HAPPY. Here with Sam and the Demons, you feel as you've gotten back a bit of what you lost back then, and that feeling is tremendous.

You only wish that it could last forever.

---
MEANWHILE, on the other side of the continent...

You are ARTYA. A Darcsen student at the Lanseal Military Academy in Gallia.

The last few months at Lanseal have been... interesting to say the least. One good thing was that there was loot everywhere! Gallia was a wonderful place, where people just kept leaving stuff lying around unattended. However, you have to remain vigilant with your loot, as you heard there's been a chain of thefts around the school recently, and they haven't caught the culprit yet. You've got to keep your eyes open.

Anyways, you've been fighting Gallian rebels alongside your friend Matthew Wellings. You like him a lot. He's nice and never gives you any issues with how you dress or wear your mask, and he makes sure that the other students don't make fun of you for it.

Also of note was the conclusion of the schoolwide Laevatein Cup. Class Z did not participate, as Novak stated that he didn't want "the other classes knowing what they were capable of". However, you and Matt watched them together anyways, and you would be lying if didn't feel a bit of perverse glee at seeing Class A lose against Class G in the finals. You never did like Strawberry Bitchtits much.

However, you seemed to notice that after her defeat, Bitchtits seemed to mellow out, or at least she didn't go out of her way to antagonize you any more. In fact, you've been hearing from Magari that Bitchtits -no- Julianna has actually been acting much nicer in general.

Plus, you could always get some more of her bread. Goddamn was it good.

You move quickly down the halls. Fortunately for you, most of the students are out on the main campus for the fair, leaving the school buildings rather empty. You don't want to run into Matt just yet, at least not without your present.

Fortunately for you, Alicia is in the store, tending to several loaves of bread. You're barely at the door when she looks up to greet you. She had some pretty sharp senses.

"Mhm." Alicia nods with a knowing smile. There's several seconds of awkward silence before you continue.

HELP?

"You're trying to figure out what you want to give a friend for Feast of All Spirits, don't you?" Alicia asks. Extremely observant.

You nod.

"Well," Alicia leans forward on the counter, "In my opinion, it doesn't matter what you give your friend. What matters is if your friend can tell you've put your heart and soul into the gift you're giving them."

EXPLAIN FURTHER

Alicia laughs. "What I'm trying to say is that what you give your friend doesn't matter as long as you can show him that you care deeply for him."

You nod, still trying to get your head around it.

"But, if you really want me to give a suggestion, how about a Darcsen Doll? I know you wear one under your poncho for good luck. How about you make your own for your friend?" Alicia smiles sadly. "A dear friend of mine used to do the same thing."

Thank god you're wearing that mask, or else Matt would've been able to see you blushing furiously. You just nod in response to him.

Not yet. It's not safe here. And it's not the right time.
You know that weird thing Japanese have about a girl's first kiss? I can't help but picture Artya being kinda like that about showing someone her face.
>>
>>25598262

I just got a mental image of Artya and matt married in ten years and it turns out she still keeps the bloody thing on even during the honeymoon.
>>
>>25598189
Good concept, but perhaps its a bit too public where we are.

>>
>>25598289
That's a bit too far, but it probably IS a big deal to her. Like, the first time she takes it off it'll be in a secluded, secure place where she knows nobody's going to see it, and it'll only be for a little while, maybe long enough for a brief kiss if she's feeling brave.
>>
>>25598248
Sorry, time crunch means some stuff had to be cut!

>>25598167
It was a bit of an understatement to say you were in a bit of a confused state.

"Uh, sorry, it was kinda Mac's idea, and I'd understand if you were angry..." Matt says.

I- you crumple the note and scribble another
WHAT- you crumple that one too
HOW DID YOU- crumple
WHERE WOULD YOU EVEN- crumple
THIS IS AWESOME!
THANK YOU!

"Oh man, what a relief!" Matt sighs. "I thought you were gonna stab me there for a second!"

CAN I TRY IT ON?

"Sure!"

You turn away from Matt, wryly noting that Alicia had been watching the whole thing from the counter. You turn at an angle so neither person could see your face as you quickly swap gas masks. You've done it before, so it's almost second nature, and in two quick and easy motions it's done.

HOW DO I LOOK?

"Well, uh..." Matt turns away, "...pretty cute."

"Oh, well look at the time! It looks like I'm going to have to go bake a fresh batch of bread!" Alicia says a bit too quickly and loudly, and she shoves the both of you out of the store and into the hall. "I hope both of you have fun at the festival!"

"Well, shall we?" Matt asks.

>Go to the festival with Matt.

JUST A SECOND. I'LL MEET YOU THERE. You write.

"Huh, okay." Matt frowns. "Just hurry up, okay?"

You run off, checking you watch. By this point, you've memorized Julianna's schedule and movements, so you've got a rather good idea of where you might find her. Sure enough, you into her right outside the festival.

"Oh, it's you- I mean- ummmmm, it's Arta, isn't it?" The pink haired student asks.

ARTYA

"Oh... right." Julianna frowns.

You cock your head curiously It seems like she's distracted, not entirely there.

"Is there.... something different about you?" Julinna narrows her eyes and leans in, examining you closely. "I can swear there's something different about you..."

STRAIGHT TO THE POINT

"...what?" Julianna says to herself as she tries to comprehend what you just wrote down.

LOOK, I KNOW WE DIDN'T GET ALONG VERY WELL EARLY ON, BUT I THINK THIS FEUD HAS GONE ON TOO LONG

"You're right." Julianna frowns. "There's been too much bad blood between us for too long. For what it's worth, I'm sorry for bullying you all this time."

Wow, so all it took was some humility to get Julianna to stop acting like a bitch? Pretty amazing how a personality could take a 180 degree turn like that.

APOLOGY ACCEPTED. BYGONES BE BYGONES?

"Yes." Julianna shakes your hand. "I don't know if we'll ever be friends, but I hope that- what's that?" She gasps, pointing at the sky.

You turn around and see that some huge, flying THING has crashed into the school's clock tower, right above where the festival should be.

And that's when the explosions start happening.

>And that's it for tonight! Tune in for the conclusion to this story thread Sunday night 6-7pm PST!

>>
>>25598827

Hmm... Hey, what are the odds that, since Jager resolved to head back to Gallia, that he is going to end up playing Big Damn Heroes at some point?

Also, I think Merc had been hinting something about the ancestral Sturmfuhrer home, too. So that's another thing we've got to look forward...

And after that story-arc, we'll probably head for the Round Table, whatever that is...
>>
>>25598827

ITS HAPPENIIINNNNGGG

Its go time meine freunde.

PROTECT THAT STRAWBERRY B- I MEAN JULIANNA
>>
>>25598856
Yeah. I'm curious to what Karla's plan is. I'm kind of real iffy about her based on what we've seen so far and it would be nice to see what she's got planned that made ruining Jager's life and his subsequent revenge-fueled war path a necessary/advantageous component for it.

From what I can understand, proving her loyalty to the Empire must have been pretty damn important for whatever she's doing if she went and did that. That whole "we'll be together again soon" thing better not mean she expects everything to be A-Okay after all this.
>>
>>25598860
Okay, If I remember right, the V2 units were deployed via descent ropes from the blimp. Ropes that were attached to pulleys.

Class Z, secure one of those lines and send it back up with an explosive surprise!

That or ride it back up.

And I'm guessing that the V2 that we secured just ended up disappearing into Foerster's lab with no further commentary.
>>
>>25598944
I'm thinking that she was so stuck in her knighthood mentality she did not realise how much of a pawn of the empire she was being, and the time after attacking Jager's mansion has made her realise her mistakes and regrets, I see her secret scheming as more a redemption of herself, and her country.
>>
>>25598994
That's a distinct possibility too. It's just been looking like this plan has been in motion for a while so it kind of seems like she really needed the show of loyalty to remain under the radar. Guess we'll see.
>>
Awww dammit, we should have gotten TWO sets of boxing gloves... (RAMIREZ! GO 10 ROUNDS IN A BOXING MATCH!)

One for Jager, and one for somebody to spar against!

Plus, we then have a spare set of boxing gloves to offer to the next Belkan Knight we duel.
>>
I just realised something, in the chaos of the attack on Lanseal, now would be a great time for Artya to slit Avans throat

>>
>>25599166
as long as after all this, Avan's skull ends up in Artya's loot collection, I will be happy
>>
>>25599200
Man, can we cut out the Avan hatred? Yes, he's a buffoon. No, we don't need to drag him and all of Class G into the plot so we can murder him or shit up his life for no discernible in-character reason.
>>
>>25598950

Probably, but I get a feeling that we're getting the answers to that soonish.

That airship is named after the Lithuanian name of Perun, Slavic god of thunder. Interesting.
