Recent Events Summary:

After ensuring that Ila, a powerful shadow mage, is a trustworthy leader of your new group, you spoke with Sir Flint - and you both agreed it was time to see the archmage, Yi Fang. You flew with him to the mighty fortress of Archon, and met with the mage in person.

Your friend, Abigail, is already twisted into a complex political situation. Fang requires his own trustworthy leader to succeed him, and he sees Abigail, his niece as that leader. But unless she performs, her admission to the Archonium - a requirement for any would-be councilor or archmage - is in question, and while that is so, she is a target for those that would take a seat, or the archmage's tower, for themselves. Fang sees you as the "summon" that will ensure none question her abilities.

You've already destroyed a family that targeted her for their own political gain, but learned that they were only puppets of a greater threat - the councilor Hae Cheung, who seeks the title of Archmage for himself.

There are ten council seats - 9 currently occupied. Abigail requires a majority approval to be admitted to the Archonium. Yi fang claims he has 3 votes secured, but therefore requires 2 more - one of which you've aquired from Tae Wong, a fair-minded and powerful councilor. Tae Wong has acknowledged Abigail's powers after she defeated his son in a duel, and made a good impression with his family.

On the way back to the city, you were ambushed. While Adavan and Yi Fang defended your young ward, you attacked and consumed the mages responsible - including Jun Cheun, Hae Cheung's favored nephew. Now that the Cheung family has been caught twice crossing the line, Yi Fang plots revenge of an immediate and violent nature...

>shadow quest at the beginning
My body is beyond ready.
>>
I would like to propose that instead of voting on each individual ability, we vote on which trees to complete first.

Exceptions can be made if a case can be presented for getting something beforehand, but purchasing remainder abilities as we acquire the xp would make the process more streamlined.
>>
>>25630711
just to let everyone who missed the last thread know, finishing off a ability tree gives a bonus cap ability. the one for the strength tree was TITANIC.
the one for the shapeshifting tree was vaporal and we accidentally got it early.

our next goal is the defence tree and the movement tree
>>
>>25630748
It would also make the process completely stupid. I vote nay.
>>
>Last time...

You consume all of the mages.

The ones you killed first have almost 'bled' dry...but you absorb a scant bit of their energy. The strongest Spirit mage should make a good meal.

You're not surprised when you pull back his cowl. Jun Cheung. He'd been planning this from the start.

You finish off your snacks. Then wait patiently for Fang to arrive. And arrive he does, although his magic doesn't let him fly very quickly. He settles to the ground next to you. "Good work, Shadow."

You warp your face to replicate the appearance of Jun Cheung. <Guess who led this little ambush?>

Fang slowly smiles an evil, evil smiles. "Now, Shadow. You didn't tell me you could do THAT."

<Do what?>

"That disguise...is perfect." As impossible as it seems, his smile widens. "A dash of spirit, and you'd be the spitting soul of Jun Cheung."

<...what are you planning?>

"I won't need to buy a vote if we annihilate the Cheung family," Fang says. "I warned them - I warned him, personally, to keep his ugly face out of this. And now, I've got the perfect method of infiltration. An undetectable replica of his favored nephew!"

Fang cackles like a madman bent on revenge - which is exactly, you realize, what he is.

You think about how Abigail might have been harmed, and you mirror the sentiment.

After the defense and movement trees, I'd like to go for the poison and water trees.

The order probably should be something like
Toughness Tree
Agility Tree
Poison\Sight Tree

Because SM's list isn't thorough enough for me.

A list of ongoing tasks of varying importance, sorted to groups by relation, ongoing starred:

Personal:
>*Make sure Abigail isn't murdered in school
>*Deal with Flint's parasite (Yi Fang promised to help)
>*Find the Staff of the Winds (Yi Fang needs it too, see above)
>*Find more fragments of Shadow

Elemental:
>Free Geb, make a new friend (Or don't)
>Get all 4 keys, free Hecate. (Adavan wants to help)

Political/Leaders:
>Find out situation in Kelvere, is the Duke really dead?
>Find out what else the Duke was hiding from us
>Get information on Sandalphon’s movements and the Light empire’s situation
>Get in contact with Steward/City 001
>Find out what's up with the Black Lady. Could she be trusted?
>Get Obis his throne back
>Ask the Elven Queen some very pointed questions about our memories

Misc/Faction:
>Find Joey
>See to it that Haven is safe, make sure differently aligned mages behave
>Research Dynamos

Potential new tasks (Mentioned but not agreed upon):
>Share your power with more people/make your Gift more powerful
>End Skysever (we have read that the spell is physically located somewhere and visible, yet hard to access)
>Deal with Legion
>Explore, this world feels small
>Find the rest of the Sword
>Find the other Elementals
>Convince Flint to become the leader of his people, after the parasite has been dealt with
>Find what happened to the Dwarves
>Find out about the Presence we felt when using Focus in the Shadow temple underneath Tarun Gakt

Remember all of these have direct and indirect solutions. For instance, the keys: We could just go in and take them by storm, sneaking around

and killing those who spot us, but do we want that? Would it help upkeep our image as a good-intending catalystic force, or would we appear as

a self-righteous destroyer? Atlantis is believed to have a key. Too bad for us, their water supply relies on it.

like, in the meta-discussion?
>>
>>25630781
We'd also have to finish off the entire stealth tree from the looks of things.

Hey, isn't "Repair the Noiralev to full functional capacity" a goal?
>>
>>25630797
When we spent the xp to buy earth resistance. So yeah, I guess that was during the meta.
>>
>>25630814
if we can figure out how to make a dynamo. that should be the first priority.
>>
If we buy Automaton, we can use the adamantium from the Noiralev to make a superstrong robot.

>>25630774

Before we get our shadow dead squad on, I could like to propose a rule went it comes to killing, No Children. As simple as that.

It's been a few hours since the ambush, and you're back in the tower. Flint and Adavan are sparring, as has become their daily routine - Flint to keep himself sharp, and Adavan to flex his new abilities as your Servant.

Since his declaration of revenge, Fang hasn't said a word. He simply sat himself down at his desk and began to think. Or, you suppose, plot.

You idly watch Flint attempt to case a spell. It's some sort of light-based attack. What should be strong magic is compressed by the parasite. A tiny fizzle shoots from Flint's finger, and is easily scattered by Adavan's shield of shadow. "You have to do better than that."

Flint shakes his head and sighs. "I've practice that one spell for years, and that's as good as it gets."

"Maybe something different?" Adavan asks. "More subtle?"

"More subtle is more complicated, and I just can't manage," Flint says. "But it's enough for a distraction, I suppose."

What do you do?

>go speak with Fang
>explore Archon for the shadow elemental
>watch the duel; maybe you can be helpful
>meditate to recharge a shard
>something else
>>
>>25630790
I don't think the keystone is they type of key we are looking for and it's more of something that has a elemental lord trapped inside of it.

I'm genuinely not sure if he will.

It depends on how he views our relationship with Abigail, really.
>>
>>25630840
Meditate to charge a shard.

Lets get isolation up to strong. We'll need it to help with barriers.
>>
>>25630840
>meditate to recharge a shard

i would want to find our elemental brother, but i dont think we are going to find this guy without being able to use deep focus freely.
>>
>>25630840
Be helpful. Let's try to boost Flint's attack by shaping his spell into a spear with our shadow magic.
>>
>>25630840
>explore Archon for the shadow elemental
Let's see if Fang will help us with searching for it since he doesn't want us using Focus.

Isolation needs some love too.

>Shadefang poison
ALL THAT to finish off the center tree.

Then just
>Gaping Maw
To finish off the consume tree.
>>
>>25630840
Ask fang if we have a few hours to spare.

I'd like if we could fly back to the shiprakers to check in on the group, make sure they haven't been attacked, and notify Auriel of what's going on.

Failing that, Meditate on the isolation shard. It's a bit low, and we need to work toward getting all the shards resonating anyway.
>>
>>25630840
>meditate to recharge a shard

Then we can go look for the shard
>>
>>25630881
it looks like there is an ability on the other side of spirit syphon, and it looks to be on the poison tree. so we have to get siphon as well to finish. but toxic smog could be the last on its tree

>>25630919
at this moment I'm fully expecting the shadow elemental to be in the hands of the enemy.

>>25630904
We already got vaporal early, so finishing off the consume tree (actually called the form tree) won't actually give us anything.

very true. we'll see how it turns out. at the moment, we should prepare for the revenge hit.

First, I'm sure we can give Adavan some insight into shadow.

Then,

Abigail has the key... To our black inky heart.

You delve into yourself and seek the shard of Isolation. You form it in your grasp, seeking to strengthen it with your own power...

...but your shadows slip around it. They just can't quite work into the cracks. After what feels like a few frustrating moments, you sigh. Perhaps another try later.

You glance up. The light coming in the windows has changed. Flint and Adavan are gone. It always seems longer than you think after you meditate...

You hear voices from Fang's study. Sounds like him...and Abigail? You wander up the stairs.

"...Shadow said he made me mess up," Abigail said. "but I don't - "

"It's alright, Abigail," Fang's voice says. "We're going to take care of it."

You hesitate. You could just walk in...either way, Fang is sure to know you're there, unless you did something a bit more drastic...

What do you do?

>walk inside

It would be harder to do, because we don't know any good lightning mages and even Yi Fang's plan hinges on the fact that we only have to be Jun for a few short minutes before consuming the entire compound.
>>

So? Who's to say Yi Fang wouldn't see it like this:

A child has a beloved pet dog. The pet dies when they are young, but they grow up and are over it eventually.

Sure in this case the dog is sentient and powerful, but the point stands.

Bed method is best method

I'd vote for the bed method. But knowing our luck? The guy is actually secretly a lich too and never actually sleeps.

You walk into the study. You don't quite feel right about spying on Fang, after he's proved a certain amount of reliability...and definitely not Abigail.

>you gain 5 humanity (444)

"You always say that!" Abigail says. Her voice is starting to rise. She's close to the desk, one hand resting on the wood. "But you just mean you're going to hurt them, don't you!?"

"Young lady, I won't - "

"Don't call me young lady!" Abigail shouts. "Grown-ups call me young lady when they want me to shut up and go back to my room! What happened to professor Suen? Did you take care of her, too?!"

You're stunned. You had no idea Abigail had drawn her own conclusions like that. She's more perceptive than you gave her credit for.

Fang looks taken aback. He glances at you as the door shuts. Abigail turns, and spots you.

"Mr. Shadow!" She looks surprised, but collects herself. "You're sneaky, you know that?"

<I know.>

She points an accusing finger at the archmage. "He said you're going to take care of the Cheung family! I know...I know that the man today made me lose, and they attacked us, but isn't there another way? Like with the Wong family? Now Yan is my friend, and the councilor likes me, too. Can't we do that with the Cheungs?"

Frankly, you're unsure of how to respond.

Fang's face hardens. "Abigail, you listen, and you listen well. The Cheguns don't want to be friends. I've tried to ally with them previously, but they don't want to be allies - they want the throne. And they'll take it by force, if they have to. They tried to kill you today. They'll try again, especially because Jun died as we defended ourselves. The time for talking is already over."

Abigail might be intelligent, but the complexity of the situation is beyond her experience, and her idealism beyond her ability to articulate. She puffs out her cheeks and thrusts her hands on her hips, but she can't find the words.

What do you say?

Actually, all we know about fangs plan is that we are the perfect method of infiltration. we also don't know how he plans on giving us a "dash" of spirit. You slide up to Abigail, and give her a brief hug. She hugs you back, and then you set her on her feet.

<Abby, do you remember the man from Magnock's prison? You told him that nothing is left when I eat them, didn't you?>

"...yeah."

<You seemed sure that I would kill him,> you say. <But you'd spare the Cheung family, even though they've tried to kill you.>

"But...that's different!" she protests. "Samantha told me he was bad before that, too, and got worse."

You impress her, and Fang, with the conversation you overheard in the Suen's dining room. You especially focus in on the professor, and her obvious intentions.

Abigail's eyes well up. "...but why?"

"Because she doesn't want to talk, or be friends," Fang says. "She wants power. She wants to be able to control other people, and have what she wants, no matter what - just like the Cheungs. It's why I want you to be Archmage, Abigail. Because you're not like that. Because Archon needs someone like you, not like them."

<Abigail,> you begin, <You are kin in the face of hate, a trait I've found very few have - and one that this world could do with a lot more of.> She turns to face you. <If there was another way - if they were just doing things we didn't agree with, but had good intentions - it would be worth it to try and befriend them. But they aren't. They're out to kill us and take our place. I must protect you. This is the only way.>

"...I don't like it."

<I don't either,> you say. <Death is final, and terrible. I don't like doing this, but it must be done.>

Abigail nods. She scraps the carpet with her foot, and turns toward Fang, still looking at the ground. "...sorry, Uncle Yi."

"...it's fine, Abby."

She wanders up to her room.

Fang looks at you. "You have a way with words, I think."

<My memories are filled with holes,> you say. <But some things...seem to come back to me, without my trying.>

Fang nods. He folds his hands. "We have two choices."

"What I'm planning is called 'the vanishing death', Fang says."A feat achieved only a few times in our history. We will barricade their manor with magic, and destroy it, and everyone in it. There will be no witnesses. When the sun rises, all that will be left of their home will be an empty plot of land."

<...and how do we ensure success?>

"Those are our choices," Fang says. "Option one. We strike tonight. You infiltrate their household, and I gather my men about their lands. The advantage to this method is that not much time has passed. They'll be less suspicious of Jun arriving late than several days late. You can report that the ambush went wrong, but that you weren't identified. Then, when the time is right, you do as much damage as possible as quickly as possible, and we establish the external barrier and move in."

<And option two?> you ask.

"They have extensive property, and an extensive family," Fang says, "rivaling what I could muster myself. You must clinch victory from within, or the plan will fail. However - if we wait a few days - I could gather greater forces, and bolster the external effort. But then, your infiltration will be much more suspect, and therefore, much more difficult. Your excuse will have to be that I captured Jun, but then relented and released him."

<Are you leaning toward either one?>

The head of the snake must be cut - as he is most likely to break the barrier I construct." Fang squints. "On the other hand...I think that, as things stand, the Wong family could be brought in as allies. With his son out of the running for Archmage, Tae has had other ideas. He eyes the friendship between Abigail and his daughter, Yan, with great approval, and I think he hopes to offer Daniu as a potential consort for Abby."

You immediately blanch at the idea of Abigail marrying that proud, golem-summoning oaf.

Fang raises a hand and smiles. "I know. But the councilor doesn't need to know that the answer is no, does he? It isn't as if he's actually brought it up with me. With the Wong family on our side, escape from the trap would prove...difficult." He thumps his hands down. "Do you have an opinion?"

You tell Fang about Darkxis, and his association with Magnock.

<I'm sure there's another elemental somewhere in Archon,> you say. <What are the chances that it's with the Cheungs?>

"None," Fang says.

<...you seem rather certain.>

"Of course I'm certain," Fang says. "Sensors within the fortress have been going off for weeks, but the city is large, and we haven't caught anything. A shadowy presence. A long string of disappearances here and there. I wasn't worried - similar situations have happened before. Though, usually, they came with a bit more of a pattern. But then, about two weeks ago, the sensors stopped detecting anything. I figured that whatever scheme it was had come to fruition. Now, it makes sense. Another elemental - smart enough to no longer draw attention to itself. Or powerful enough to avoid detection."

He sighs. "If it had been making day trips to the Cheungs, I would have noticed. I've already started a new search for the elemental in the meantime."

<And when were you planning on informing me?>

"When we made progress," Fang says. "If I spent my time telling you everything I was doing, it would take up half my day."

<...fair enough. But...what about innocents?>

"Innocents?"

Note: Vanishing Death is a rumor/historical term to refer to one household destroying another in a single night with no witnesses. It's actually right out of the Forgotten Realms, Dark Elves, etc.

It isn't some kind of specific death spell.

I read the entire Drizzt saga a couple years ago. Great pulp.

I don't think the Dark Elves actually called it anything specific, but I remember the start of the first book was Drizzt's house going in an raping another that was like 5 or 6 ranks above it so they could be in the top ten.

Good stuff.

<No children,> you say. <I'm not going to do to them what they're doing to Abigail - kill kids too young to even appreciate the situation.>

"What then?"

<What do you mean?>

"And what then?" Fang asks. "What are you going to do with them afterwards? Huddle them in a corner? Adopt them into a big happy family? You think they won't find out about what happened way back when? You think some of them won't want revenge, or that they'll be perfectly ok with leaving their homes and starting a totally new life with everyone they've loved, dead?

Fang looks at you derisively. "And you know what - where are you going to draw the line? At 13 years of age? Everyone below 13 gets to live? Or maybe 14, or 15? Or hell, 18. Who's a child, Shadow? Are you going to take your time in the middle of a battle and pick out every special snowflake so you don't have to feel bad about it later?" He leans back. "Frankly, I thought you were smarter than that - and here you are spouting the exact same idealism you just told Abigail wasn't realistic.

"In Archon, the Fang family has a nickname - we're the gamblers. We're the toughest, we're the boldest, and we make the impossible, possible. We traditionally bet everything on one heir. It reduces the fronts we have to fight on, but it also means all the eggs are in one basket, and that basket must be protected with extreme prejudice. It must be guarded with a righteous fury so overbearing that no one would think to topple it. No Cheung will ever again question Abigail's ascension, because they will all be dead. Everyone in Archon will know who is responsible, no one will be able to prove it. They will remember why, exactly, they fear my name - and they will run to put as much space as possible between themselves and my niece. Because the trick to gambling, shadow, isn't luck - it's to make sure you're always holding all the cards."

You pause for a moment, then begin in again. <And this is the thinking you wish to pass on to Abigail, as Archmage? That despite what she believes all those who question her must be removed, down to the last newborn babe?>

"No, Shadow," Fang says quietly. "That is why I will do it for her. I have long since passed the point of redemption. I passed it before I was a lich. She will stay clean of my actions. I care little for my reputation, now - I need not last another century as leader, merely a decade or two. What does it matter it a dirty, bloodied rag is splashed with a bit more blood?"

You have to admit he is a persuasive man. This is the Archmage of Archon - a man that stands on a wire above councilors and a city of mages, facing an empire of angels. His conviction is as solid as adamantium.

<...what about mind magic?>

"What about it?"

<Change their memories,> you say. <Make the innocent forget what they've seen.>

"Say that I could," he says. "They might still figure it out from rumors and reasoning, even left with holes in their minds. Their bent for revenge would be greater, knowing that they'd been meddled with. And they'd come to that conclusion at some point." He shrugs. "But that's academic. Mind magic of that subtlety has been lost since the..."

Let's talk to Fang about his obsessoin with leaving Abigail "something" after he is gone.

(picks up random precious object)
Fang, what is this? Does it talk? Does it feel? Can it see the beautiy of the full moon? Can it care for a child? Does it have empathy?

The answer is no. All the things that you want to leave Abigail behind cannot care, or empathize with people, or love someone. They are lumps of metal, glass, and wood. They will not care for her when you are gone forever, and they will not hold her during the service you will receive, wiping tears from her eyes.

You start to form an explanation, but Fang cuts you off before you can say a word. "It's Adavan, isn't it?"

<I don't - >

"Do not bullshit me, Shadow."

<I can't speak for him.>

"Mind magic," Fang says. He gets up from his chair and folds his arms behind his back. "...fascinating. But not appropriate...for -this- situation. Besides. Killing them, or altering their minds to the extent that they wouldn't be a problem...it's more or less the same thing." He turns back to you. "To return to our earlier conversation. Abigail has enemies. Those enemies must be eliminated. That is the long and the short of it."

<No, it isn't,> you say.

"Excuse me?"

<You heard me.> You rise up in front of him. <You say you've learned your lesson and that you don't wish Abigail to repeat your mistakes - and look at what you're doing! You're building an empire of fear for her. You're boxing her into making the same choices you've made for what, as you've just said, has been most of your life. At this rate, she won't be innocent of your wrongdoings. She'll inherit them. They'll be a stain she can't get rid of.>

Fang blinks, surprised at your boldness.

<...I try.>

"Then what do you suggest?" he asks. "This has to be done, somehow. You can go in alone - but you'd be going in alone. This isn't some third-string noble family, like the Suens. This is the Cheungs we're talking about. You'll get one strike. And then they'll be on you like a Xephlax swarm. You need to at least down Hae himself. Anything less is unacceptable."

Speaking of, it's only 2 in-game days until the teleportation.

>>25633682

You can certainly consult Adavan; he is sneakier, because of your magic, but no where near as sneaky as you.

>Earlier we were paranoid at mentioning Haven to Fang.

OK, lets talk this people, I think having children in the camp will do some good to the mages and angels alike, It will give them something to build for a sense of hope and community away from revenge or war. Plus maybe we can convince to have Fang help a little in the form of supplies.
>>
>>25633814
That probably wouldn't work.

They are of the same element and both liches, but Adavan has nowhere near the spiritual "Mass" as Fang.

The guy radiates power.

That barely-passing chance could have been Fang acting against us. We cannot trust him.

You quickly move to find Adavan and explain the situation.

He sighs heavily. "...I didn't realize that they'd lost older methods in this day and age," he tells you. "I just wanted Fang to have one less chip on me - for emergencies. But it doesn't matter. I don't plan on giving anything up to him."

<He might not give you a choice.>

"Fang isn't the only powerful mage in Archon," Adavan says. "I've been regaining strength, quickly. Besides, he needs me for Abigail. I'm the only person in this entire city without a political agenda."

<Not a bad point,> you admit.

"So what's your plan? Walk right in?"

<More or less. I was thinking you might make good backup.>

Adavan considers that a moment. "I doubt I have the skill to get in undetected. We aren't all made of shadows. But...I could wait outside the grounds, in case of emergency. But Abigail would be that much less shielded."

What is your response?

>I need you for this; Fang can watch her for one night

I have an alternative idea:
>kill so many of the family that they cannot hope to rule Archon within the next decade or so.
>DON'T kill so many that the cannot recover from this anymore!
This is a noble family. If there is a chance to recover from this and bring future generations to the top they won't be dumb enough to suicide by continuing their attack on the ruler.
>Kill the current head.
>Kill the oldest remaining heir.
>Kill the grand-parent generation.
This should be the bare minimum needed to ensure they will focus on rebuilding their power in the next few decades instead of striving for the top.

Second idea: A Show of Power
>Both one of Erebus' remnants and Hecate herself favor Abigail

1. Make Abigail an Angel in a big ceremony in front of everyone.
2. Ensure that Abigal will survive the next month or so.
3. Seriously try to find the keys for Hecate.
>We have good senses and some suspicions as to the whereabouts of some keys. We might even consider enlisting the help of Fang's spy network for this.
4. Come back with Hecate. Have her officially give her favor to Abigail.

I agree with bringing kids (with a little memory loss) to the camp. I see no reason why Fang needs to know about it.

Alternatively, I'm fine with relocating the entire Cheung Family and potentially using them as a weapon to destabilize Archon and undermine Fang if we ever have need to remove him from the game.

While technically true the criterion for leaders is not that they are the most powerful mages. They have to be elected by council members. Without or with little support even an extremely powerful mage will not become leader. Just think about how hard it is for Abigail, who not only is the most talented mage but also promoted by the Archmage himself.

You walk back to Fang's study. He seems to be working on a sort of spell. Balled up scraps of paper are scattered around the study. He snaps his fingers, and they throw themselves at one of the shiny, intricate contraptions that float through the room. They all vanish. "Yes? Not quite finished yet."

<What can you tell me about Jun Cheung?>

"That you're lucky," Fang said. "He was a man of few words, and little expression. A rock. Easy to emulate. But then, I'm sure he smiled at his wife, so make sure it's not a leer. There's mirrors upstairs. Speaking of, the family is large, so you can blend in. But you need to avoid anyone close - the spouse, his children."

<Right.>

"And wait until you have Hae in private before striking," he tells you. "You're the favored nephew, so he'll throw a tirade at you for your failure where the others can't see as a way of saving face. That's what you wait for. The problem will be making it through the evening to that point."

<Sounds like a plan.>

"Good. Now, we both have things to do." He begins to draw a sigil on a fresh paper.

You wander upstairs. There's a face mirror in the hall. You morph into Jun Cheung, and practice changing the expression in subtle ways - a slight frown, a small smile. It's a bit harder than you expect, at first, but it quickly becomes second nature.

"Ah!"

<Ah!>

Abigail is standing there, looking at you. "Who are you?!" You quickly return to your normal, shadowy form. "Oh! Mr. Shadow. I didn't know you could do that. Cool! Um..." Her voice gets small. "Um...sorry, about before."

Do you tell her anything?

We would be fighting a whole family of powerful mages.

The way we are going about it now, we ideally get to kill and eat the top mages one by one, avoiding the chaos of battle and the risk of losing the chance as eating one of them.

Any of the mages not important enough to kill probably would give only minimal exp anyway.

Fang casts his spell on you. You don't feel different, but the sigil under your feet and the bright orange lights around you certainly look complicated enough to work as advertised.

"Alright," Fang says. "Jun knows some basic teleportation, so I'm going to put you a few hundred feet from the edge of the manor. It won't be questioned. Your story is you barely escaped and spent the daylight hours making sure your trail was absolutely covered before returning home. Can you mimic his voice? Try me."

It takes you a few sentences to get the tone, but eventually you settle down on a good approximation of what you remember.

"That'll do," he says. "Get ready."

A teleport sigil appears under your feet. In a moment, you're no longer standing in the study, but on a paved road running between two wide hills. You walk forward with purpose.

Three guards a a strong spirit mage converge on your position almost immediately. They all stop and salute when they see you. "My lord," the mage says, bowing slightly.

You continue past the bowed men without acknowledging them. From what you've seen of Archon, it seems like an appropriate response. The men walk back and away as you pass without a word, then return to their patrol.

Lights begin to line the path, throwing a bright orange glow onto the surrounding road. You round the top of the hill, and finally lay eyes on the Cheung manor.

Expansive isn't the word you'd use. More like huge. The gardens alone would encompass the entirety of the Wong family home. The grounds contain more than one house, though the central building - more a castle, than anything - is at least enough to hold at least a hundred people comfortably. And their servants.

You walk up to the gates, resisting the urge to swallow. They open for you without a command or gesture. Guards line the path, bowing to you as you move forward. You ignore them, as before.

You enter the castle and find yourself in a huge atrium. A staircase leads up from a marble floor and splits off to the left and right, joining with a balcony that runs the length of the room. A chandelier lights the space brightly. It's quiet.

A woman bursts across the balcony. "Jun!" She runs down the stairs, taking them two at a time. She smells faintly of spirit. She wears a brown dress, but has short brown hair and a relatively mousy face. From the description Fang gave you, this must be Jun's wife. You expected her to be more...beautiful?

She throws her arms around you. Tears seep into your shoulder. You carefully create a wet spot on your illusion. "I was so worried. We thought...we thought that Fang...oh, Spirits..."

You feel a slight pang of guilt. This is a man with family...that loves him, apparently.

We're keeping in character by softening the stony exterior slightly around loved ones, and then immediately attempting to excuse ourselves to go talk to his uncle so we don't spend more time around his loved ones than is necessary.

"...yes, of course. I'm sorry." She looks up at you. "I know...I know he asked you to do that. But please, it's not worth it. Try to convince him...we can't face the Fangs. He listens to you."

"Too well," she says. She grabs you by the collar and stares you in the face. "I love you, Jun. Don't you dare die for that old man's grudge." And with that, she releases you, and forges up the stairs.

She spares a glance for someone coming down. Another man - you're pretty sure it's Hae Cheung's second son - Bal - by his hooked nose and black hair. She flinches slightly, then politely bows, and waits until he drifts down to continue walking. She slips into a door at the top of the stairs.

"Women, huh, Jun?" Bal says easily. "Still don't know how a stone like you fell for a little monsoon like her. You could have married better, anyway."

"The councilor will be waiting," you say.

"Isn't that like you," Bal says, "dancing around the question? Can't comment on your own marriage?"

Deciding that Jun Cheung has said enough, you give Bal a disapproving look.

Bal sighs. "Have it your way. It would be disappointing if I ever got a rise out of you, anyway. Wouldn't know what to do with myself. Dance on your grave, maybe?" He cracks a sharp grin, then turns around and heads back up the stairs. "Let's go. Father's waiting."

You follow him through halls and up stairs. Most of the stone is dotted with lights and tapestries, and every hall is carpeted. Every intersection has a table holding a vase containing fresh flowers - all tiger lillies, bright orange with black spots. The place is immaculate, but you don't see a single servant.

You pass another intersection. Bal grins back at you. "Hey, remember that one servant that knocked over the vase here?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8liPdLa0yc

You walk into a long chamber. A table, low to the floor, is set in the middle of the room. Mages of various elements are seated, cross-legged, on pillows that line the edges of the table. Most of them are quite old. One of them is openly a lich - his cowl is pulled low, but dim lighting is no problem for you. You can see the bones of his skull, and the edges of fingers tucked into his robe.

Seated opposite you, on a wooden chair, is Hae Cheung. His skin is old and mottled. A fat, hooked nose dominates his face. A long braided beard, not unlike the one Tae Wong wore, drapes down from his chin. You're pretty sure Fang mentioned that was the mark of a councilor's station.

Bal takes an open pillow. You greet the councilor as instructed, bowing nearly perpendicular at the waist, and waiting in silence.

"Raise your head," the councilor says. He voice is old and grating.

You stand straight. Steely grey eyes stare back at you. You find yourself praying that Fang's spell can stand up to the scrutiny.

"Your men are dead, and you are late," Cheung says. "What happened?"

I feel like it's going to be more about the fact that it's about the fact that they're leveraging great power in order to skirt the natural order of things.

Especially in a society that seems to be predominated by familial succession, clinging desperately to what you have using the power your station has helped you accumulate rather than passing on what you have gained through the course of your life to your inheritors is probably viewed as extraordinarily selfish, at best.

And outside, Spirit isn't viewed terribly charitably, seeing as it's the "summoning unspeakable horrors from the Nether" element, so the fact that people are willing to use that power to BECOME the unspeakable horrors is probably pretty appalling to non-Archonites.

For this report we should be brief and consist.

THe initial attack went off as planned. However they managed to land with little damage to the aircraft. Yi Fang and the Fang Child's bodygaurd fended off our summons while the child sent her summon after us.

Unlike its approach in the duel it did not attack head on but instead used illusions and teleportation to attack us from behind, it slew several of us before we could counter it and by then Yi Fang had launched his own attack. The shadow beast and Yi Fang slew all but myself in those moments. I fled.

We said as much to Abby in our conversation this thread that he listened in on, and he didn't even seem all that upset that we seemed intent on helping nudge him off the path of just going full tyrant in order to secure a potential power base for Abby to inherit.

>>25636010
>>25636021

It's taboo, even amongst spirit mages. Obviously the angelic propaganda campaign that's been over 700 years running means that no normal country would openly accept them, and spirit mages traditionally appreciate the circle of life and death and respect it. Making yourself a lich is seen as cowardly, fearful, and disgusting at best, even by people that realize it isn't really 'evil' per se.

It's not quite as bad as being the Black Lady, but it's bad. There aren't any evil requirements, but the spell is blood magic, which is a forbidden type of magic that requires the sacrifice of a mage's soul. Of course, the sacrifice in question can himself be a terrible evil dude. So it's still not really evil, if you're alright with that whole sacrifice part.

That's what I get for showing up late.

Could you post what you found out here? People read the thread even after SM leaves.

Is this that secrecy pact with Adavan or are you saying we missed a plot point? Because if the latter would you mind elaborating on what we missed?
>>
Why do people still sage threads after 300 posts?

No, a lot of the stuff you missed SM fed to you later. I'm honestly not blaming you guys, I just marathoned this so a lot of things are fresh in my mind.

As soon as Michael mentioned that he killed a women and buried her under a tree I knew (strongly suspected) it was the tree with the black blossoms in Heavensgate where Ila told us that shades meet.

I also thought, "Ila! We get to see Ila again!" When he told us about the mixed light and shadow, nobody picked up on it. Hell, when SM railroaded us and brought her INTO THE ROOM to jog our memory, we weren't surprised to see an old friend. We barely gave a shit.

I was astounded

Ring City=/=Heavensgate. Look at the map at >>25630685

Because sage has somehow been seen as downvote in the 4chan community.

>>25636539
I actually came to that exact conclusion, I just didn't bring it up because we were trapped and then Ila showed up anyway and made the realization void.
>>
>>25636539
People did bring up the meeting place, but Ila just came straight to us so it didn't matter.

I thought it was really fucking obvious since she lived there. And we didn't seem to give a shit because everyone was fucking pissed off during that thread.

So far you haven't dropped any startling revelations, you've only managed to sound like a pretentious twat.

AFAIK it is never stated that the Great Gardens are in the Ringed City itself. The Great Gardens are public.

I thought we were going to tell the mote to tell Auriel to look under the tree.

In any case, I think he was trying to jog everyone's memory, he mentioned and hinted at it multiple times. Just nobody really cared.

>the mote
You mean wisp. Nobody says "the mote".

The wisp can't speak.

>>25636677
We put a recording into the wisp and shipped it off to Flint.

It can impressions well enough.

Pretentious twat here.

On the second reading through, I really don't care as much as I used to.

Soldier on, everyone.
