Recent Events Summary:

You flew with Sir Flint to the mighty fortress of Archon, and met with the Archmage, Yi Fang, in person. In exchange for help with Abigail, and aiding him in seeking the Staff of Winds, he's agreed to help remove Flint's parasite.

Your friend, Abigail, is already twisted into a complex political situation. Fang requires his own trustworthy leader to succeed him, and he sees Abigail, his niece, as that leader. But unless she performs, her admission to the Archonium - a requirement for any would-be councilor or archmage - is in question, and while that is so, she is a target for those that would take a seat, or the archmage's tower, for themselves. Fang sees you as the "summon" that will ensure none question her abilities.

You've already destroyed a family that targeted her for their own political gain, but learned that they were only puppets of a greater threat - the councilor Hae Cheung, who seeks the title of Archmage for himself.

There are ten council seats - 9 currently occupied. Abigail requires a majority approval to be admitted to the Archonium. After securing the vote of Tae Wong, you were ambushed by Cheung's forces on the way back to the city.

With the Cheung family caught twice crossing the line, Yi Fang plotted revenge of an immediate and violent nature, but you convinced him to change his plans to that of a stealthy assassination. By replicating the appearence of Hae Cheung's favored nephew, Jun, who you've already killed, you've managed to sneak into the heart of the Cheung family household. You are now about to give your report on the ambush you yourself destroyed...

You walk into a long chamber. A table, low to the floor, is set in the middle of the room. Mages of various elements are seated, cross-legged, on pillows that line the edges of the table. Most of them are quite old. One of them is openly a lich - his cowl is pulled low, but dim lighting is no problem for you. You can see the bones of his skull, and the edges of fingers tucked into his robe.

Seated opposite you, on a wooden chair, is Hae Cheung. His skin is old and mottled. A fat, hooked nose dominates his face. A long braided beard, not unlike the one Tae Wong wore, drapes down from his chin. You're pretty sure Fang mentioned that was the mark of a councilor's station.

Bal takes an open pillow. You greet the councilor as instructed, bowing nearly perpendicular at the waist, and waiting in silence.

"Raise your head," the councilor says. He voice is old and grating.

You stand straight. Steely grey eyes stare back at you. You find yourself praying that Fang's spell can stand up to the scrutiny.

"Your men are dead, and you are late," Cheung says. "What happened?"

What is your response?

We should really not bring up the part about Jun's wife in front off all the others here. It would probably be seen as ooc for Jun, as something he'd be more reserved about and possibly only ask in private.

If we talk about what Jun's wife wanted, we'll draw suspicion onto ourself. If we want to talk to Cheung about this, we'll have to do it in private. Doing so in front of others will make us look weak.

Also, add in a bit about the fact of the matter is that Fang knows that we are to blame. Insist on surrendering. If Cheung refuses, convince him in the most extreme way possible: Slashing open our "stomach" in ritualistic suicide, to show how much we feel that that is the correct choice.

"Fang's summon turned the tables on our ambush," you say. You keep your tone measured and respectful. "I was lucky to escape. It is not normal magic."

Bal raises an eyebrow. "Did you forget how to banish a summon?"

"I assume," Hae Cheung snaps, half at you and half at Bal, "that you attempted such an obvious strategy, and that it failed?"

"Yes, councilor."

"Mmm." Cheung considers this a moment. "What is your recommendation going forward?"

"The creature is rapidly becoming problematic. I suspect it was involved in the Suen matter, as well. No assassin will be able to kill the girl if her own shadow is protecting her. It must be eliminated."

"I see." Cheung frowns deeply.

You notice Bal squinting at you. His lips work slightly, but he sits back on his pillow and says nothing.

Cheung nods. "I will summon you shortly. You are dismissed."

You bow deeply, walk backwards, and slip out the door.

You're surprised to find Jun's wife waiting there. Her mousy face is relieved to see you.

You, on the other hand, are feeling a bit tense.

What was her name? You wrack your memory on Fang's briefing...Lanfen, that was it.

"Jun," she says. "I apologize. I just didn't trust Bal." Lanfen walks up and takes your hand. "We have things to discuss."

The more time you spend with this woman, the likelier it is you're discovered. You need to weasel your way out of this.

On the other hand...it seems as though there's somewhat of a split in the Cheung family. If you could manipulate her, maybe you could turn this situation to your advantage.

You take a moment to try to get your bearings as she leads you down the ahll, but your magical senses have dulled in the extreme since you've set foot in the castle. You can only assume it's some blanket enchantment to provide privacy from outsiders - and, perhaps, from each other. The good news is that your disguise won't have to work as hard.

What do you do?

>no risks. Tell her you've been sent somewhere else.

"How was the meeting? Did Bal try to undermine you?"

You think about how you could most concisely put the situation. "He was ineffectual."

She smiles at you. "Well, that's not a surprise. Even Hae must get sick of his sycophancy on his off days."

You remain silent. She guides you through a mess of corridors and stairwells, and then suddenly turns you into an unremarkable wood door.

It's a set of private quarters. The outer chamber hosts a seating area and a small lounge set into a corner. A stone balcony is connected to the space by a wide opening. It's comfortable, but not overly opulent, as the rest of the place seems to be.

Lanfen turns and embraces you again, then drags your head into a deep, aggressive kiss. You're so surprised you don't even react.

She draws back quickly, frowning. "What's wrong?"

An idea strikes you.

A brilliant, wild idea. But if it works...

You slowly turn your head toward her, as if waking out of a daze. "Fang knows the family was responsible. He plans a Vanishing Death for the Cheungs."

Lanfen takes a step back. Her hands fly to her mouth. "The children." She blinks at you. "...how do you know this?"

"Because he left me alive on purpose," you say. You move forward and take her shoulders, putting your sudden momentum to work. "He said he knows of the split in intent between our side and Bal's. He gave me an ultimatum. We must remove Hae Cheung, and redirect the family...or he will destroy us all."

"Dear Spirits. Oh, goddess, spare us." Lanfen slowly lowers herself into a seat. She's shaking. "...one way, or another...it had to come to some kind of head." She glances up at you. "When? Did he - "

"He's given me one day," you say. "I must act tonight. He's made a new alliance with the Wongs. They have the strength to see it done."

"Oh...I don't know what to do, Jun," she says. She looks up at you. Her eyes are watering. "What...what do we do? You can't possibly kill him."

What do you say?

>get the children ready...and anyone else you think you can trust. I want you to leave the house, tonight. If I succeed, you'll hear from me. If not...you'll need to dissappear.
>get everyone we can trust ready. Hae Cheung will summon me shortly, and then I will strike. If the night does not end with our faction in control of the Cheung family, it ends for us all, anyway.

You're building an empire of fear for her. You're boxing her into making the same choices you've made for what, as you've just said, has been most of your life. At this rate, she won't be innocent of your wrongdoings. She'll inherit them. They'll be a stain she can't get rid of.>

"I cannot win against Fang," you say. "I learned that much today."

"Then...then you must convince the councilor to - "

"Lanfen," you say. She stops, and looks up at you. "I can't convince the councilor out of this."

"What exactly are you suggesting?"

You take a slow, studied breath. "Gather the children, and anyone you can trust. Leave the house."

"...no."

"Lanfen, I can't guarantee that - "

"I said no!" She stands. "I'm not abandoning you. I'm not abandoning our home." She walks toward you. "You can't convince the councilor? Fine. Then we do it. We do what we've thought about but never voiced. We kill him. And we make this house a place where our children can grow up knowing right from wrong."

"I - "

"Jun!" She shouts. She grabs you again, and begins to sob into your chest. "Please. Don't make me go. I love you too much. If you die...I will die with you."

Against your better judgement, you find yourself unable to form the words you need.

She looks up at you. She wipes the tears out of her eyes. "I will gather our side. And I will not have you commit suicide. We need someone to go in with you, when you see the councilor. My father. When will you be summoned?"

"Shortly."

"Alright. I should move quickly. I...Jun, I love you."

If we had just stuck to the mission to kill the councilor, it is likely the eldest would take over the house, a new councilor would be appointed who would not try to assassinate Abby, and no one else would have had to die.

All these extra deaths will be blood on Shadow's hands.

Rather than having the shadow CONSUME "Jun" when we "summon" it, we should have Jun be SUBSUMED by the Shadow instead, presumably as a cost for summoning it.

Better that it seems like Jun sacrificed himself willingly in order to leverage the power Fang offered him in helping to overthrow his heads of house than to make it seem like Fang's powerful familiar betrayed and consumed Jun of its own volition after being offered as backup.

"...I love you too," you manage to say.

She gives you a brief peck on the cheek, then starts out of the room.

"Wait," you say. "You should know...Fang gave me a trump card. The summon itself will come when I call. But it doesn't answer to me. I'm sure it will kill the councilor...but what happens after that is up to Fang."

"...only as a last resort," she says. "We can't very well put our faith in the archmage."

You walk up to her and take a breath. "After...what do you think will happen?"

She shakes her head. She puts a hand to her temple. "...I don't know. But...his sons must be dealt with, as well, if anything is to change. I'll try to isolate them. I have to go." She stops halfway out the door. "Don't die." And then, she's around the corner.

You feel sorry for her. Jun Cheung is long since dead.

You wait in the room in silence.

After a few minutes, there's a knock at the door. You open it. The lich you saw earlier in the meeting room stands before you.

"...Lanfen has informed me of the situation," he says. "I made myself useful as the messenger to collect you."

You've no idea who this lich is, but at least he seems to be an ally. You follow his lead out the door. "So," he says. "Do you mean to become councilor yourself? Or is my daughter's husband as humble as they say he is on the streets?"

What is your response?

>"I've never sought to lead our family. Only to help it prosper. This isn't for me. It's for her."

I mean, nothing so gruesome as that, physically, but basically. Was imagining more like his physical form being dissolved into a pool of shadow from which we would then "emerge", bound temporarily to his cause by his willing sacrifice for his ideals.

Having Jun seemingly martyr himself for his ideals is a far more compelling way of disposing of him than making it seem as though something that is confirmed to be "under Fang's control" go rogue and eat the person it is supposed to be aiding.

Not sure why people think trying to lead a coup and then seemingly framing Fang for betraying and killing the ringleader of the coup is going to be a good way to get the resulting family power structure to not hate Fang's people.

Ugh. This is exactly not the way I hoped we would tell her about the Shadow plan.

Now it's going to seem like Fang just up and made the Shadow eat Jun once he had reached the end of his usefulness, which isn't exactly going to ingratiate what remains of the family to him.

Any way this could possibly be salvaged to seem as though it wasn't Fang just backstabbing on a whim after he got what he wanted from Jun?

Gave my thoughts on it here, but not sure what we can do about it with that line dropped.
>>25649861

Though I guess we could "reveal" that we lied about the terms of the temporary summoning in order to keep our wife from stopping us from activating it. She DID say that she would rather die with us, so telling her outright that we "planned" to sacrifice ourselves to the terms of the "summoning" is probably not a thing Jun would want to do until the last minute.

I kind of think it may be a bad idea to go with the whole "killed by a summon" thing. The point behind this was to make the Cheung family complacent for Abigail, that may be hard if her Shadow summon kills this chick's husband. I say we at least appear to be something different when called on.

Interestingly, this ALSO sets US (as the Shadow) up as being a summoning fueled by his sacrifice in the pure pursuit of JUSTICE.

Which, if we let that detail slip, opens up the possibility of potentially turning what remains of the Cheung family into some sort of pseudo-cult of JUSTICE Shadow.

We get to keep the moral high ground, AND our forays into psychopathic plotting, all at the same time!

I mean, I don't think it's actually a GOOD idea, just that it might sway the murderhobos into the course of action I think we should follow, only to get the thing they secretly wanted out of it shouted down by reasonable people some time down the line once it was too late to turn back.

"This isn't for me. It's for her."

"Good answer," he says.

You continue in silence to another door, far higher in the castle. A glance out a nearby window tells you you're in the midsection of the tallest tower.

He looks at you. "Are you fully prepared for what you are about to do?"

"I am."

"I've never liked you, boy," the lich says, "but Spirits be with you." He opens the door for you, and you head in.

Inside the plush sitting room are three men. Hae Cheung is seated on a fat leather chair. His two sons - Bal, and the elder, who you remember is named Chen - are seated on the cough next to him. They rise as you come in, though it's a grudging and half-hearted show of respect. The councilor himself stays seated.

You walk up. A table situated between the couches and chair - about 7 feet or so in length - is all the separates you from Hae Cheung.

"Bal, Zhang, leave us," the councilor says.

Bal makes a face, but starts to move. Zhang, the lich, makes a brief bow, then opens the door for Bal. The younger son starts through. Zhang catches your gaze as he turns - you see a questioning look there.

What do you do?

>attack. Bal has his back turned to Zhang, and Hae is just a leap away for you.

Can we, if we end up seated, turn our leg back into a tendril of shadow, and extend it toward the pair of them under the table so that we have no effective distance to close once we fully revert our form, or do we know whether or not any physical disturbance of our form will undo the disguise we've been working on?

I feel like waiting is probably better, if only for the fact that it means the rebellion outside has slightly longer to get rolling before Jun's "betrayal" becomes known.

More likely it succeeds that way, and we can use our actual abilities as Shadow to impress a memory of "Jun"s method of sacrifice on the rebelling forces once we've gotten rid of Hae.

>>
I play risk with all three rolls. Some DCs are constant, some are variable within a range, which I then roll up and match against your dice. DCs are determined by situational/statistical modifiers.

In any case, it's three DC dice (which may or may not be a constant) against your dice.
>>
The whole "sacrifice for Shadow" plan still seems stupid to me. All it does is implicate Fang in Jun's death and start a new grudge. No amount of "it was our choice" is really going to change that. We should just fake our death some other way.

>We should just vanish Jun. Noone finds out what happened to him
Abby has already said in public at least once with respect to the Shadow that nothing is left when he consumes someone.

Just vanishing Jun immediately implies to anyone who has heard this said (which is going to be EVERYONE, since courtly gossip is fucking unstoppable) that the Shadow consumed him regardless of what else anyone might think.

Unless we do something to make it seem as though he was consumed in a way that WASN'T just Yi Fang destroying a pawn that was rendered obsolete, it's going to seem that way to anyone looking.
>>
>>25650483

You don't budge. Zhang breaks eye contact and quietly shuts the door behind Bal.

"Sit," the councilor says.

At first, you're glad - this puts you in proximity to him. But as you lower yourself to the couch, he rises, and moves to the window - putting Chen between you and him. Chen stares at you like a jungle cat sizing up a meal. You keep your eyes on the councilor's back.

"You know, Jun," Cheung says, "you're like a third son to me. But this is the second time you've failed - and failed dramatically. First, your ploy with the Suens was annihilated. And now, the Wong family is smitten with the Fang girl, and you got six of my prized men killed." He turns on you sharply. "Explain why I shouldn't tie you to the rack to make up for this humiliation!"

"I underestimated that shadow summon," you say. "I will bear whatever punishment you deem appropriate. But the family must stop antagonizing Fang."

"I know your position that matter!" he shouts. "This is not a discussion about the family. This is a discussion about you!"

"This -must- be a discussion about the family," you say, working to keep your voice measured. "If we don't change direction, there won't be anything left of us. I've no idea what Fang's done, but his creature kills quickly, silently, and leaves no trace of its actions. It could already be amongst us right now, and we might not even know it."

"Spare me your paranoia!" The councilor snorts. "You've fallen for the oldest Fang trick in the book - fear."

Chen shakes his head disapprovingly from across the table. "I thought you had more of a spine, Jun Cheung. What right do you have to say anything after not one, but two failures?"

"I have every right to say something," you say, keeping your focus on the councilor. "We cannot win this fight. And because the fact is that, unlike your sons, I will lay my life down to keep this family alive."

"What did you just say?" Chen hisses.

"Shut up, boy," the councilor says sharply. He slowly turns to you. His voice grows soft and cold. "Well, Jun? Since we're airing out all our grievances, why don't you continue?"

Not much choice now. You brace yourself. "I have judged that, given the situation, even my life will not be enough to protect us. I see our situation as this: I convince you to change our course, or Fang destroys us all. It is that simple."

The councilor stares at you.

We may have taken Jun's life, but we've given him a legacy that will make him immortal.

We have to plan our own assassination.

...

WE BLAME THE ANGELS
>>
"...do you know why I hold my grudge?" the councilor asks.

You decide that the best policy, for the moment, is to remain silent.

"When the last war between Archon and the Empire finally ended, Archon was a wreck. Arland had revolted. Felnoir snatched more territory from our northern border. The attempt to undermine the Empire by destroying their forests backfired, resulting in a strong alliance between Atlantis, which had formerly been neutral, and the angels.

"Fang took over as the young, powerful archmage, and began the war. 60 years later, we lost, and he was disgraced. And I - I was at my peak. The time was right to overthrow the Fangs and take leadership for the Cheung family, and restore this country." Cheung slowly walks toward you. He raises a finger. "But somehow - somehow! - he weaseled his way out of it. His true brilliance was never in war - it was in politics. He bribed. He cajoled. He forged alliances only to pit them against one another. He swam the avalanche and survived, thrived - and he's never stopped rubbing my nose in it, not for one single day!"

Cheung now towers over you. His face is a mask of rage. "I WILL TAKE HIS TOWER, I WILL HAVE HIS SEAT, AND I WILL KILL HIS FAMILY, AS HE KILLED MINE! I WILL DANCE ON THE GRAVE OF HIS PATHETIC LITTLE PUPPET OF A NIECE! THEN, AND ONLY THEN, WILL I BE SATISFIED!!"

>con't
>>
>>25651122
<I accidentally made all of Archon agree that Abby is the best person to rule, and now they want to let her take command unimpeded. Sorry?>
>>
>>25651089
We could throw Jun under the bus by having Fang be a dickass and demand the death of the leader of an attempted assassination who OBVIOUSLY did not have the councilor's approval. "Jun" gets funteimed by Fang.
>>
>>25651089
The only way I can see out of this is we tell Mae that we'll deal with the shadow, and then we kill ourselves spectacularly.

That sounds like way too damn fancy and unconvincing for us to pull off, though.
>>
>>25651163
No, SM, no >con't
We eat him now.
>>
The councilor is breathing heavily, his finger jabbed repeatedly into your face during his tirade. You feel a slight pang of pity for him. A man bent toward Fang in eternal revenge for past wrongs.

You wonder how long Fang's list must be. Pretty long, you'd wager.

But the circle of revenge must stop somewhere...and he can't be allowed to harm Abigail.

He's right in front of you, tired from his own shouting. This might be the best chance...

"I here you sit, demanding the family change its course because you're scared of a little shadow," Hae Cheung says. "Disgusting. I expected better from you." He turns around to walk toward his chair. He's only a step away from you.

What do you do?

"Then I'm happy to inform you..."

Your nightblaze shocks from your body, rolling out over the room. It moves through the walls, smashes through the castle, and disintegrates enchantments. The room goes dark.

>Mana: 17/34

<...that Jun died following your orders.>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5Gi_trjnu4

You leap up from the chair, whipping a limb toward Chen. It glances off his chin, but he's send sprawling over the top of the couch.

Your momentum carries your into the councilor.

You smash into a shield of Spirit. With the enchantments fogging your senses gone, you can feel his strength. It rolls off him in waves of orange light - nothing quite like Fang, but he was fast enough to get up something between you casting your spell and lunging for him. You press in against the spell, hard, but it doesn't budge.

He uses his magic to leap to the other side of the room. "Kill me if you can, creature! I'll use your skin as a rug!"

You feel an explosion of magic rip through the castle below you, and then more, popping like fireworks here and there. The battle has begun!

A blast rocks the hallway past the door. Zhang is throwing everything he has at Bal!

Magic slams into you from the side, throwing you across the room. You crack into the stone. You're back up quick, but that hurt. You glance over. Chen Cheung is already preparing another spell - and it looks like the councilor is starting to summon something very unfriendly.

>you've taken 4 damage (46/54)

-------------
-------------

You'll figure out how to handle your two opponents next time.

Only party members can save you "automatically", and then only if the situation allows them. I really wouldn't bank on 1d20 saves.

It's unconfirmed, but it's probably to do with the fact that we royally screwed over the Ring City (and maybe Kelvere as well) and then fled town, and rather than doing any sort of damage control we decided to go do comparatively small-time local politics in Archon.

It could be Angels getting their shit together and going out for revenge, Kan-Abar taking advantage of the destabilization caused by what we think is the death of the Duke in Kelvere to march Demon armies to conquer their neighbors before Obis gets the chance to come back and try and talk sense into his brother, or any number of other minor plot points that have snowballed into unstoppable juggernauts we should've seen coming.

I'm referring to events that haven't occurred yet.

Some anons have guessed a few good things here and there, but no one appreciates the full gravity of the situation, or what you're doing, or where you're going.

That is going to change.

>once Abby's place is secure, Fang is going to retire and then posses her body
>rival construct faction has taken control of city 1
>fire magebro is dead
>Haven camp about to teleport into murderzone
>Black Lady full on offensive
>Darkxis shard fully awakens due to all of our CONSUMING, rewrites our very being
>Joey has taken control of the Ring City and is now the highest. He swears vengeance on us for leaving him behind.

>You're surrounded by solid ice on all sides. You're going to have to smash through at some point.

IT'S TOO LATE

>About the same, yes. Though I'll be able to keep going a bit later.

>three days in a row of staying up for Shadow Quest
>mfw I have to get up for work at 6 am

Why do I do this to myself.

The ring city's adamantium army is coming down from where they were left in Palthair to assault Archon?
>>
I bet the PLOTBERG is a light elemental.

Or a shadow elemental that decides to take our place as Mr. Shadow like we just did with Jun now and Darkxis before.
>>
>>25652080
God dammit, that whole thing with the Ring City was cool but I knew we were jumping into the world a bit too soon with all that shit.

Hold on to your butts, everyone.

I really hope this doesn't cause a shitstorm like when we gave ourselves up to the angels when we first met Fang.
>>
When this quest first started, I thought and hoped we would be some kind of boogie-man stalking the world eating things.

I wonder if life would not be so complicated now.

Oh well, we can still eat stuff.

If we make it out of all of this alive, that can be a part of our retirement plan.

If he does that we will bring this city down around his head. He will not survive our wrath.

I think there's only so long you can just play something like that before it starts to get old. Having a long-running quest series involves development and change, bother in the world around you, and the character itself that you're playing.
>>
>>25652239
Understandable. I just feel as if we thrust ourselves into the world-stage too quickly
>>
>>25652262

There was just too much about this world that we didn't like and wanted to see change. Too much injustice, where the first person to see us as something other than a monster was under threat to be captured and have her soul ripped out by the dominant political force in the area, simply because of the talents she had been born with.

We weren't going to sit back and let that shit continue.

We're Justice, man. Justice can't be apathetic or non-confrontational, it demands involvement.

Mr. Shadow would have some strange debates with the Supreme Court.
>>
>>25652382

We tend to have strange debates with everyone.

One of the reasons why I love this quest is that we manage to hammer out some great philosophizing in most of those discussions.

Then you'd love reading through the BFQ archives.

ahahahahaha
you mean the quest that threw out character development in favor of more dickgirls? pff, yeah right.
>>
>>25652463
there are these things called timezones, you see, and that gentleman is not in America. It's a hard concept I know, but one day you'll get it.
>>

There were *interesting* and strange debates. Mostly on the morality of magically reprogramming people to be fuckslaves / energy batteries VS just killing them.
But still, interesting debates.
>>
>>25652554
No. not really.
>>
>>25652554
Or to dickgirl or not to dickgirl. Or whether or not to incest. Or feed rats to our daughter. Or if we should cheat on the girlfriend or not.

Oh wait, those were all fucking terrible and painful.
>>
>>25652536
You idiot, he's asking why you need an alarm to wake up at 4pm
>>
>>25652614
Night shift, different sleep schedule, etc.
