ecent Events Summary:

You flew with Sir Flint to the mighty fortress of Archon, and met with the Archmage, Yi Fang, in person. In exchange for help with Abigail, and aiding him in seeking the Staff of Winds, he's agreed to help remove Flint's parasite.

Your friend, Abigail, is already twisted into a complex political situation. Fang requires his own trustworthy leader to succeed him, and he sees Abigail, his niece, as that leader. But unless she performs, her admission to the Archonium - a requirement for any would-be councilor or archmage - is in question, and while that is so, she is a target for those that would take a seat, or the archmage's tower, for themselves. Fang sees you as the "summon" that will ensure none question her abilities.

You've already destroyed a family that targeted her for their own political gain, but learned that they were only puppets of a greater threat - the councilor Hae Cheung, who seeks the title of Archmage for himself.

There are ten council seats - 9 currently occupied. Abigail requires a majority approval to be admitted to the Archonium. After securing the vote of Tae Wong, you were ambushed by Cheung's forces on the way back to the city.

With the Cheung family caught twice crossing the line, Yi Fang plotted revenge of an immediate and violent nature, but you convinced him to change his plans to that of a stealthy assassination. By replicating the appearence of Hae Cheung's favored nephew, Jun, who you've already killed, you've managed to sneak into the heart of the Cheung family household.

You met withe Jun Cheung's wife, Lanfen. You attempted to preserve the lives of innocents - including Jun's own family - but Lanfen refused to abandon you, and promised to stage a coup while you confronted Hae Cheung.

And now, in the upper tower of the castle, you attacked the councilor and his son. The manor below has exploded into battle.

You decide that the best policy, for the moment, is to remain silent.

"When the last war between Archon and the Empire finally ended, Archon was a wreck. Arland had revolted. Felnoir snatched more territory from our northern border. The attempt to undermine the Empire by destroying their forests backfired, resulting in a strong alliance between Atlantis, which had formerly been neutral, and the angels.

"Fang took over as the young, powerful archmage, and began the war. 60 years later, we lost, and he was disgraced. And I - I was at my peak. The time was right to overthrow the Fangs and take leadership for the Cheung family, and restore this country." Cheung slowly walks toward you. He raises a finger. "But somehow - somehow! - he weaseled his way out of it. His true brilliance was never in war - it was in politics. He bribed. He cajoled. He forged alliances only to pit them against one another. He swam the avalanche and survived, thrived - and he's never stopped rubbing my nose in it, not for one single day!"

Cheung now towers over you. His face is a mask of rage. "I WILL TAKE HIS TOWER, I WILL HAVE HIS SEAT, AND I WILL KILL HIS FAMILY, AS HE KILLED MINE! I WILL DANCE ON THE GRAVE OF HIS PATHETIC LITTLE PUPPET OF A NIECE! THEN, AND ONLY THEN, WILL I BE SATISFIED!!"

The councilor is breathing heavily, his finger jabbed repeatedly into your face during his tirade. You feel a slight pang of pity for him. A man bent toward Fang in eternal revenge for past wrongs.

You wonder how long Fang's list must be. Pretty long, you'd wager.

But the circle of revenge must stop somewhere...and he can't be allowed to harm Abigail.

He's right in front of you, tired from his own shouting. This might be the best chance...

"And here you sit, demanding the family change its course because you're scared of a little shadow," Hae Cheung says. "Disgusting. I expected better from you."

Your momentum carries your into the councilor.

You smash into a shield of Spirit. With the enchantments fogging your senses gone, you can feel his strength. It rolls off him in waves of orange light - nothing quite like Fang, but he was fast enough to get up something between you casting your spell and lunging for him. You press in against the spell, hard, but it doesn't budge.

He uses his magic to leap to the other side of the room. "Kill me if you can, creature! I'll use your skin as a rug!"

You feel an explosion of magic rip through the castle below you, and then more, popping like fireworks here and there. The battle has begun!

A blast rocks the hallway past the door. Zhang is throwing everything he has at Bal!

Magic slams into you from the side, throwing you across the room. You crack into the stone. You're back up quick, but that hurt. You glance over. Chen Cheung is already preparing another spell - and it looks like the councilor is starting to summon something very unfriendly.

Isolation is too weak and I'd rather save Hunger for something more serious.

When you use a shard, it's sort of like a spell - makes your roll easier. Most shards are good at one thing or another. Hunger, obviously, boosts your consume. Isolation is a sort of "superfear" that can interrupt spells and stun enemies. I'm only telling you that because you already pretty much figured it out.

When you use a shard, its charge-quality decreases by one level. If you have shitty rolls, you'll be forced to draw on more of the shard to make up for it, and its quality will decrease more than normal.

So, put another way, the "status" of a shard doesn't effect its active power, but if you abuse them they'll become totally useless.

I should also tell you that the shards themselves grant passive bonuses. If you push them hard enough in active use that they become fragile or break, you lose these bonuses. But even a broken shard can be repaired with your meditation.

The shards are important to the plot. Misuse will incur certain consequences. That is all.

Isolation has another stage between weak and broken. We can save it for a nastier looking spell for now.
