Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack. While there, you also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, got a new weapon called the Buzzbomb, recruited some new squad members, and helped Isolde regain her honor by defeating the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then celebrated The Feast of All Saints, giving everybody some presents to strengthen your bonds with them. On that note, Sam now has a puppy she named Wotjek, who you're sure is going to grow up into a beast someday. You then headed back to Gallia, only to find out the civil war hasn't been going well for the Loyalists. Things are desperate enough that they've hired you to participate in an upcoming mission.

Currently, you are on the way back to your old home, the Sturmfuhrer Estate. You've actually never been back here ever since you were forced to flee in the face of Karla's attack. There were a lot of painful memories associated with this place.

But, you've got to face your demons (heh) sometime. You might as well get it over with.

"So Cap," Sam asks, looking blankly at the green fields the truck you're in is driving past. "We're going back to your fancy family estate, right? Well, what's it like? Or guess, what WAS it like?"

No. No it was not. It is a persistent hoax. The photo is a shoop of a line of other tanks in a parade. It started with a bored modeller who had too many spare parts of KV-1s, KV-2s, BT-5s and BM-13s, and spread because people don't do their bloody research. Here's the original kitbash.

"It was amazing." You grin, recalling long distant happy times. "You really should've seen it in it's prime! Green fields as far as the eye can see, with this massive, ancient castle sitting right in the middle, overlooking the whole thing. Back in ancient times, it used to be a Valkrur fortress, or at least that's what everybody says, and it used to be the lynchpin of Northern Gallia's defense, until Ghirlandio was built."

"Sounds amazing." Sam nods.

"Yeah... but I'm not sure how much is left standing." You sigh. "Last I saw, the castle was getting wrecked pretty good by the Imps. I'd be surprised if any of it was left standing."

"Well... here's hoping, right?" Sam smiles. "I always did kinda want to live in a castle."

"Really, now?"

"Ah, um, forget I said that, Cap!" Sam shakes her head and turns away. "Just thinking out loud, that's all!"

You shrug and return your gaze to the green fields. These past two years, it looks like the dirt torn up by the tank treads and truck tires have been covered up by freshly grown grass and flowers, giving the whole place an eerie beauty. And in the distance, you can finally see the outline of the family castle. It's... a bit different from what you remember. The walls have crumbled, with numerous holes where tanks and other siege weapons had punched through, and quite a number of the towers and turrets that dominated the skyline had collapsed or toppled over. You don't even want to know what the interior looked like.

However, even stranger is when you see a group of people walking up the road leading to the castle.

"Hey, slow it down a bit." You tell the driver. He nods and the truck slows to keep pace with the little knot of people. Getting a closer look, you see it's about five people, all them Darcsens.

"Excuse me," You say, standing up from the truck. "May I ask you what you're doing here?"

The Darcsens stop and glance at each other nervously. You see them whispering frantically before one of them is pushed to the forefront as he "volunteers" to speak.

"Ah... well..." He mumbles. "Y-you don't happen to be the owner of this land, are you?"

"And what if I am?" You narrow your eyes.

"We've umm... been kinda living in that castle there for the past few months."

"Cap, did you know anything about this?" Sam asks.

"I did not." You frown and look back at the Darcsens. "Which one of you is in charge, here?"

"T-that would be the Matron, sir!" The Darcsen kid says very quickly. "She's up at the c-castle right now!"

"Okay, we'll leave you alone... for now." You say. "But if I find anything fish about this, well, I got two tanks right behind me with very bored drivers."

The Darcsens turn to see Fenrir and Kilroy coming up the road as well, and they visibly pale.

"We're all telling the truth! Honest!"

Wait, doesn't Sam have a Perk that basically makes her as non-noble as it gets? I am now imagining a scenario where Sam ends up with Jager and their the roles basically reverse as Sam drops spaghetti all over the formal proceedings and Jager has to keep filling her in on the proper etiquette.

That'd be rather rude of her, it is our family castle, you just don't get to steal a man's castle, especially if the man has a merc company.

Not likely, as the one we talked to just asked if WE own it.
Meaning they know full well that they're squatters, they just hope that we won't shoot them for being all over our property.

Me, I'm in favor of letting them hang around as long as they don't actually break anything. It's not as if Jäger is really anti-darcsen, anyway.

"Hey, it's a long walk back to the castle. We can give you a lift, if you want." You say.

The Darcsens then look at each other nervously again. You thought you were just being polite to offer them a ride, but these kids were treating it like you were trying to lure them in so you could have your way with them, or something. Was the concept of charity really that alien to Darcsens?

You turn back to face Heloise and Tarin, jerking a thumb back at the Darcsens. "No offense, but are you people always like that?"

"It's not like people have been going out of their way to be nice to us." Tarin shrugs.

"Plus, you DO have kind of a scary air about you..." Heloise adds.

"Gee, thanks." You sigh before turning back to the Darcsens. "Just get in the damn truck already! You will accept my offer and you will ENJOY it!"

"So, where you kids from?" You ask.

"Here and there." One of the Darcsens shrugs. "Most of us were from the South, and we all kinda migrated up here when the GRA started trying to purge us."

"And how long have you been taking shelter on my land?"

"The past few months. It was the Matron who led us here, really."

"And who exactly is this Matron?" You ask.

"Well, she just kinda showed up, gathered all of us together, and led us here." The Darcsen kid shrugs. "She knew the castle had been abandoned for a couple of years, and reasoned it would be a good place to stay until this whole civil war thing blew over, and in the worst case scenario, we could rebuild it and use it for ourselves."

"Sounds like she thinks she owns the place already." You frown.

"Oh no, she' perfectly aware we're intruding on this land, but I guess you should still talk to her about it."

At this point, you've finally reached the castle proper, and you're rather amazed. There has to be hundreds of Darcsen refugees gathered here... and they've actually done a good job fixing the place. Sure, the castle was still mostly ruined, but the seemed to have partially rebuilt several of the destroyed areas, such as the main keep and the housing areas, as well as restoring basic infrastructure and utilities. Truly, Darcsens were a pretty damn resourceful people.

"Jager? Is that you, boy?"

That voice, could it be...?

"Jager! About damn time you showed your damn face around here!" Kincaid, your old family groundskeeper and huntsman, strides up to, a big smile on his face. "How long ago was it, a year? Two? I thought you were dead until the newspapers started coming in!"

"Kincaid? Your old ass is still alive?!"

"What, you thought a few hundred Imps could kill me? No, it's gonna be old age and a bad diet that'll do me in!" Kincaid laughs. "And I see you brought company, as well."

"Yeah, it's sort of a long story. Hey, what's the deal with all these refugees?"

"Lead the way." You say.

"This way." Kincaid leads you on. You and Sam both follow close behind, Sam clutching Wojtek close to her chest.

To her credit, the Matron didn't seem to have taken up shop inside the keep, but had in fact set up in a tent inside the main courtyard. At least you didn't have to deal with the awkwardness of having to deal with a stranger inside your own home.

"So... do you have any idea who this Matron is?" You ask.

"Ah well, I didn't want to give it away in front of everybody else, seeing as she wanted to keep it secret." Kincaid sighs. "It's your grandmother."

"Oh... OH." You blink. "She.... she's back?"

"Oh yes, and she's not exactly happy with how you've been running things here."

"Ummm, am I missing something here?" Sam frowns. "Cap, I thought you said your entire family was killed.

"Well, that was half true." You sigh. "Grandma... didn't quite agree with the rest of the family over some key issues and was kind of exiled as a result, if 'a free sabbatical to Emmeria' is exile."

"And she's still her lovely old self, too." Kincaid adds in.

"Wonderful."

"At least you're still her favorite grandson."

"I'm her ONLY grandson!"

"And I see you haven't changed a bit." You hear an elderly, but powerful voice behind you.

"Um... hi, Grandma, it's been a long time."

"All these years, and that's all you have to say to me?" Grandma Sturmfuhrer shakes her head. "Come here."

She then gives you a big bear hug, and she is still as absurdly strong as you remember.

"My gods, Jager, you don't visit, you don't write, it's like you forgot I exist!" Grandma pouts.

"It's a bad habit of his." Kincaid adds.

"And who is this young lady?" Grandma's eyes turn to Sam.

"Samantha Wellings, Captain Sturmfuhrer's second in command." Sam says, stepping forward. "But you can just call me Sam."

"Hmmm, well mannered, straight to the point... you could learn a lot from her, Jager."

You sigh.

"Now, I suppose there's a lot we have to catch up with."

After several hours of story telling, a bit of arguing, and raucous bouts of laughter, you finally get the gist of what your estranged grandmother had been up to. Apparently, she had heard of the Imperial invasion of Gallia, and concerned about the family, tried to make arrangements to return. She arrived at Anthold roughly six months ago, when the civil war was in full swing. One thing led to another, and she suddenly found herself leading a rather large group of Darcsen refugees out of the South, and more than few GRA soldiers probably went deaf from her withering tirades. She then returned to find the castle in ruins, and assuming the worst, decided to turn the place into a makshift refugee camp.

"And as you can see, we've been doing quite well here." She adds in. "But... the family laws dictate that these are you lands now, which means the choice is up to you."

Most of Gallia's military is technically militia unless called upon in times of war (iirc they all have to go through basic)

This'd be no different...plus, I'm guessing that having a militia, especially in the midst of a civil war would be a noble's prerogative.

"Hey, not to intrude." Sam frowns. "But what did our Grandma get exiled for, anyways?"

"Ah, well, do you notice how this castle was built as a military stronghold?"

"Yeah." Sam nods.

"For the past few generations, Sturmfuhrer influence in this area has waned. Sure, the construction of Ghirlandio certainly put a check on our power, but a series of fools and cowards squandered our family's military might. It was actually part of the reason why Jager's parents and grandfather were trying to broker a marriage with the Hohenzollerns, in an attempt to regain some of that power. A stupid idea, in my opinion. Power is meaningless if you have to rely on others to gain it. And look what happened."

"Yes, Grandma, you were right all along." You say glumly. "So what's the state of the castle?"

"Shambles, mostly." Grandma shrugs. "We've managed to repair the main keep and some of he outlying buildings, but that's it.

"You know, maybe Qyburn can help on that front." Sam suggests. "Besides, he looks to be getting at that age where he really shouldn't be traveling so much anyways. How about he gets a more permanent lab?"

"That's a good idea." You nod.

"Well, I have some more camp affairs to manage." Grandma waves you off. "Go do what you need to do."

There is such a thing called the "Militia Movement" in the US. Groups of civilians train themselves paramilitary style, often because they don't trust the government. In recent years, the press they have gotten has died down, but 20-30 years ago they were much more on the forefront of the mind.

I think "told her to do it" is a bit of an understatement. Remember, Belka was basically annexed by the Empire, who are MUCH larger. If they decided to depose Belka's current internal government, the best the Belkans could hope to do is take a bunch of Imperials with them. She was under massive durress due to her people (who, as a member of the royal family, she is responsible for every last one of) being implied hostages against her loyalty and obedience. Pretty rotten situation to find yourself in. Being nobility ain't all parties and abusing the peasantry.

She did say in the very first thread that she was choosing between love and loyalty, and loyalty won.
>>
>>25728744

Same. Besides she has yet to fight us in rapier duel.
>>
>>25728744
I'm not sure that Sam sees it that way anymore. We temporarily shot down that option because Jager's still pretty tore up about his fiancee murdering his family and burning his lands, but who knows?
>>
>>25728719
Tarin did, Matt did, Sam implied at the boardwalk that it happens all the time, and Sam's dad at least thinks something is going on. To be honest, there is a lot about how Jager acts around her that could easily be seen as something more. Our first few interactions with her had us jokingly referring to her as the love of our life and we tricked her into thinking she slept with us. Also we go out of the way to spend time with her so much and shower her in affection and hugs.
>>
>>25728759

If you got the choice to protect your family and be forced to attack your lovers household, what would you chose.
>>
>>25728754

Yeah. Right now I see Jager knowing about Samantha liking him but really just wanting to get Karla out of the way so he can move on. I don't really think he would be adverse to the idea but at the same time he wants to get a clear head. My thoughts at least.
>>
>>25728755
No, I don't. I think Sam is a lot better, both in and out of character.
But their relationship has never given me the impression that they're that close.
She may or may not want that, but they're not there yet, and Jager still needs closure with Karla before he can move on.

What I would choose is irrelevant (and I don't have a lover, so I can't say).
What IS relevant is that Karla chose her Emperor over her lover, and that's how this whole mess got started.

>>25728831
This is how she explained her reason for attacking the castle in the first thread:

"You may be my lover, but you're not my Emperor. If he says the Gallians are the enemy, then that's the way it must be."

That is not an answer that says "I have to", but "I choose to".
What she believed as a child is not the same as what she believed when she burnt our house down.

>We still got horses around here, right?

>>
>>25728941
That line depends on how you read it. I read it like "He's my Emperor, if he tells me to kill my lover there's nothing I can do about it."

Not that she doesn't love him, but she feels she has no choice.
>>
>>25728952

>What she believed as a child is not the same as what she believed when she burnt our house down.

And what she believed when she burnt Jager's house down is pretty clearly not the same as what she believes now, from our brief strolls with Erik
>>
>>25728941
I choose to doesn't mean it was a free choice. At all. From what we've seen, her choice was basically "attack your fiancee's family" or "Guess what, Belka's doesn't even have titular independence. Enjoy being Imperials!" or something along those lines
>>
>>25728985
ya its becoming more....twisted
>>
>>25728941
>That is not an answer that says "I have to", but "I choose to".
Except that it says the opposite of that. She said "that's the way it must be."
The way it MUST be.
She's saying she doesn't have a choice in the matter, not really.
The Empire has a metaphorical gun that they can shoot Belka with any time. They're basically Poland under Soviet rule. Stuck. Either obey or we'll fuck you over even more.
>>
>>25729005
Guilt and self loathing tend to do that to a person.
>>
>>25729005
Yeah, now she's got some super secret proect and saying really villainy stuff like "we'll be together again soon."

No idea what's going on with her anymore.
>>
>>25728995
but the way things are going it's just the same thing, just dancing to the empire's tune.

>>
>>25729643
It's not far to the coast, considering that your lands are at the far north of Gallia. Now that you think about it, your family used to maintain a beach house here, which was technically more of a tower to overlook the coast in case of invasion. In any case, you think with a few additions, you could actually put in a dock for the Vergeltung if you so chose. Something for the future, you guess.

You, Sam, and Kincaid ride along the bluffs overlooking the beach. Sam is busy taking in the sights, though you notice Kincaid is uneasy.

"What's wrong, Kincaid?"

"There's a boat there." He says, pointing down near where the old tower is located. "It's troubling since nobody's brought a boat with them."

Well, you're horses, and they're not, which means it's painfully easy to catch up to the intruders. One of Kincaid's hounds tackles one of the runners while your run down the other. Kincaid and Sam manage to cut off the third runner.

"Who the hell are you three?" You say, looking down on them. They're obviously not Darcsen. "I don't take kindly to trespassers on my lands."

You kick the spy in the face. "Yeah, no, you're in enemy territory, wearing civilian clothing. You're goddamn spies, which means I'm well within my legal right to execute the three of you on the spot. So I suggest you start talking before I follow through with it."

Finally, after what seems like an eternity, the woman spy steps forward. "We were sent here watch and report Loyalist troop movements. We're in your land because we believed it to be abandoned, and therefore nobody would be watching it."

Unfortunately, the spies clam up and refuse to say anything more, no matter how much you and Kincaid threaten them. Tarin and Ramirez search the tower, which the spies had been using as a makeshift base, but they don't find anything of use. The spies already destroyed all incriminating evidence and equipment to prevent them from being used against them.

With that, Tarin, Ramirez, and Julia take the tied up spies back to the castle, where Grandma begins making arrangements to have them transferred to Ghirlandio for interrogation. After, this was something that concerned the Gallian military, not you.

"I'm surprised you didn't join in on abusing them." You say to Sam.

"Huh? Why do you say that?"

"I was pretty sure you'd go apeshit on any GRA guys you find, you know, with Lanseal and all."

"Gosh, you have so little faith in me." Sam rolls her eyes. "I'm smart enough to know those guys are just flunkies. Kicking their asses wouldn't have made much of a difference in the large scheme of things."

"Huh. Not even for fun?"

"Shut it, Cap."

The rest of the survey goes off without a hitch. All in all, it seems your lands have largely recovered from the destruction of the war, with the exception of the castle.

The next few weeks are a flurry of activity. More of the castle is rebuilt, and a makeshift dock for the Vergeltung is erected in the bay. Qyburn also now has a permanent lab, much to his delight. Meanwhile, you and the rest of the Demons train relentlessly.

Dislike potentials because too luck based. Raw stats work no matter what and here is my thoughts.

Jager+ 1 ACC
So he can get a bonus to hitting.

Samantha +1 STR or AGI
Either way she gets better.

Ramirez: +1 ACC
To add to his advantage over jager as a stromtrooper.

Tarin: +1 AGI
Because that is what she does.

Brillant: +1 ACC or Toughness
So he can hit better or take hits better.

Julia: + 1 ACC
To boost her Prime stat and so her tank can hit.

Heloise: +1 AGI
Dodge dodge.

Aleksandr +1 ACC
Do I even have to mention this?

Headcase: Potental
Because holy crap he has good luck with these.

Isolde: +1 STR
Because lancer.

Elsa: +2 ACC
Because sniper.

I would switch Alec to Acc, Ramirez to a potential and Julia to Ag (I'm also assuming it helps in driving), making it:
Jager: Acc
Sam: Acc
Ramirez: Potential
Tarin: Potential
Brilliant: Potential
Julia: Ag
Heloise: T
Aleksandr: Acc
Headcase: Potential
Isolde: Dunno, but St is already primary, so I'll go with T as someone else suggested, I guess.
Elsa: Acc, Potential
>>
>>25731264
I'll second this
>>
>>25731264
The issue I have with your list is you picked almost everyone's primary skill to level up. That's a fucking waste in my book.
>>
>>25731264
Potentials may be a bit luck based, but even if we roll a "bad" one, it will be better than a stat in the specific circumstance it applies.
Stats may be broader but a jack of all trades is a master of none.
>>
>>25731264

If you switch Isolde's stat up to Toughness then you have my vote.

>>
>>25731461

Oh yeah that does remind me we basically never use Double tap after that one thread about 20 or so threads back.
>>
>>25731461

Well I think giving basic commands like that as options would be a waste, we just have to be aware that we can use these skills when we need to. Like Double Tapping can be done by Shocktroopers anytime during combat.
>>
>>25731482
Waste of time that is. Asking us if we'd like our Shocktroopers to Double Tap every time they attack etc.
>>
>>25731473
To be fair, with Acc zero and a -2 to hit, wouldn't that just be us screaming loudly and spraying the entire world with boolets?
>>
>>25731491
Well, to be fair, enough boolet and you will hit SOMETHING.
>>
Though am I the only one who thinks it is hilarius that if we went with Elsa going +2 ACC she would bet a better sniper then alek? Unless she was his spotter then he is slightly better.
>>
>>25731491
We're using an SMG...that's basically what I imagine Jager doing anyways

>>
>>25731551

Might as well also mention Elizabeth CAN go on infiltration mission before combat instead of having her on Comms as well.
>>
>>25731569
Instead of a potential, I'm thinking we'd get a burden.

Something like SEVERE MENTAL TRAUMA, or PTSD.
>>
>>25731580

Yep. Would not ever do this. Roll one natural one and all hell breaks loose. In comparison to jamming and the like.
>>
>>25731590
Well, they'd be in character for the girl who was severely wounded in action in friggin' EW1
>>
>>25731491
or Momo-ish accuracy? Shock troopers aren't exactly super accurate but they are compared to that level of accuracy.
>>
>>25731600
Well, we still have like 4 or 5 rerolls.
>>
>>25731600

I'd definitely vote for infiltration if it were worth while. Most cases so far she was better off on Comms, but Merc did say there would be good reason to field Liz sometimes.
>>
>>25731501
Well, she was a famous Imperial sniper before she defected to get some of dat Alek. Now if it was JAGER having better Acc than Alek, that would be noteworthy.

>>25731504
Well, statistically firing twice at -2 is almost always better, unless we have a very low chance to hit to begin with.
I've only done the math with D6s (Warhams, Dark Elf crossbows fire twice at -1 to hit), but doubles are always better, unless you're already at 6+ to hit, before the penalty.
(One shot at 5+ or two shots at 6+ have the same odds of hitting at least once. 2/6 or 1/6+1/6, but the double shot has a 1/36 chance of hitting twice. Two shots at 5+ is better than one at 4+ because you'll have a higher hit ratio as well as the chance of doubles.)
I haven't slept enough (read: at all) to convert that math into d20s, but you get my drift.
We might as well doubletap everything all the time except when it seems like we might need to aim.
>>
>>25731640
I just assumed we already were, actually.
>>
>>25731616

Yeah. But I want to save those up for KARRRRLAAAAA!!

>>25731625

Yeah now if it was really worth it I would go for it. But typically it isn't because her intel from the radio while not as brutal as full on Infiltration also has a hell of a lot lower chance of backfiring in our face.

>>25731640
Still amusing. As is now she I think is exactly equal to him unless she and him are working together then he is much better. Would hate to see him at 1 wound. just because +5 bonus +2 from Elsa and his ACC stat.
>>
>>25731616
the moment you say "oh hey, I've got plenty of those, I'll use a few now" is the moment you suddenly run out of those lifesavers once you really need them
>>
>>25731686
This is why I just want people to forget we have those. Along with other reasons.
>>
>>25731686
Or it's like that one videogame where you keep going "I should save this for when I need it" and hoard the suckers, eventually beating the game without ever using one.
>>
>>25731686
I'd rather use a reroll here than have Julia get PTSD or something. Though we really should forget about our rerolls, at least until we really need them again.
>>
>>25731653
I was as well
>>
>>25731671

I'm thinking of using it if say, blueprints or important intel were there for the taking. Rolling well on Comms gives us an edge in the current battle, but I imagine stuff we get from infiltration would have a more profound effect on the war in total. Of course it has to be a place worth breaking into.
>>
>>25731686
Can't use 'em if we're dead. Or in a bad situation.

I always use my freebies for a good reason, I never hoard. Otherwise, it's as good as wasting them and not having them in the first place.

New potentials!

Ramirez
Juggernaut: Increased resistance to damage.

Tarin
Ninja: Not slowed by obstacles and resistant to falling damage.

Brillant
Fieldcraft: +1 to rolls outdoors.

Julia
Less is More: Critical fails are ignored.

Headcase
Ride of the Valkyries: Causes terror to enemy troops.

Elsa
Patient Hunter: +1 to hit when stealthed.

It should be noted that as a spotter, Elsa devotes half her ACC as well as her potentials to Alek's shooting.

Anyways, does anybody want a second chance to shop?
>>
>>25731723
And then he misses again, because that's how dice gods work.

The rerolls are only really good for mitigating ones. And we have enough of them to use one to save Elizabeth's ass if it comes to that.

Shoot alek in the foot 2-5 times every battle. So he feels like hitting.

>>
>>25731785

Whelp, I suppose this has a point...

Plus it'll help if we get a Red Swallow again and have a squadron of heavy tanks in our face.
>>
>>25731844
Our upkeep most likely went up by a fuck ton because we got everyone level ups.
>>
Seconding at least the Theimer. I don't think the mortars are that much of a sacrifice to make our anti armor even better at their job. The mortars are stronger, but everyone has grenades and everyone is capable of killing infantry.
>>
Just because we buy the Theimers doesn't mean we need to replace our existing ones permanently. We could swap only Sam's lance out because of her +2 bonus to tank hunting and have Isolde keep the frag rounds.

We just need to keep track of what fighting we expect to do next and arm accordingly.
>>

Question about Ramirez and Weapon Harness item. One. Ramirezs perk lets him use a lance right? Two. Does everyone have Weapon Harness or only Jager?
>>
>>25731892
I think it's a great idea, once we're sure that we can afford it. Meaning once we know what our next upkeep cost is, how much money we still have and when we get paid.
Running one more mission without it should be fine. It's not as if it's going to be a dealbreaker. And then once we have checked our economy, we can go shopping again.

General Wellings exits from an APC and gives you a respectful nod as you salute him.

"I have to thank you for apprehending those spies." He says. "We can't afford to have the GRA know what we're planning. The fate of our country literally hinges on it."

"It wasn't that big of a deal." You shrug.

"And I see your castle has seen better days." Wellings notes.

"Yeah well, it's a fixer upper." You narrow your eyes. "But I don't think you came here personally for a mere social call."

"You're right. It's happening." He says. "Gather up your men."

We're on the offense, the only thing mines are good for are defense. We'll be pushing and clearing building. Also, for that matter we don't even know if we'll be the ones going into the city... For all we know we could be pushing the flanks of the city and never see urban combat.

This. The demons are basically shock troopers. They get in. They mortar and Buzz bomb the vulnerable locations and cause panic and confusion from it. Let Alek wonder off to fire and cause more panic. Then they charge in take everything possible out then leave or find a defensible location. While the normal troops head in. One of the few things the demons don't want is protracted battles. Where movement is limited.
