Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

Your friend, Abigail, was twisted into a complex political situation. Yi Fang, archmage of Archon, requires his own trustworthy leader to succeed him, and he sees Abigail, his niece, as that leader. But unless she performs, her admission to the Archonium - a requirement for any would-be councilor or archmage - is in question, and while that is so, she is a target for those that would take a seat, or the archmage's tower, for themselves. Fang sees you as the "summon" that will ensure none question her abilities. You managed to stop her main opposition, the Cheung family, that had its own designs on Yi Fang's seat, by formenting a interfamily coup.

With Abigail's immediate problems taken care of, you returned to help your allies establish themselves in the forest. After fighting off an attack by more robots marked with "002" the teleportation was successful. You decided to explore the forest and scout out any possible dangers, and soon found that you weren't alone. The native elves, werewolves, and humans seem friendly enough, but you didn't exactly make friends with the orcs. Meeting the challenge of the orc leader, Vaz Grak, only seemed to antagonize them further.

You've decided that one of the keys to the vault under Jacob's Field needs to be collected - the lightning key, possessed by the late Duke Vellik of Evinbrook. But the castle city is again locked in a battle for survival, and this time, it's on the verge of death.

Alright, time to Solid Snake the fuck into the castle, eat every magical item we find, grab the key, and NOPE the fuck out.

>Last time...

You alert your allies where you're going and fly to Kelvere.

You end your supersonic and land to stop the sky sever, and then take flight, keeping low and close to the Tairns river.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl7i_YxDl-8

Something is growing in your senses. Something dark...and empty. Terribly, horribly empty.

What's going on?

You can see the peak of Evinbrook's castle up ahead. The sky near it is darkened by smoke. You flap to gain altitude.

"Oh..." The words come out of you automatically, as if you're a human, caught so surprised that you've nothing else you can do.

A huge army surrounds Evinbrook, which is caught in the middle of a pitched battle. Magic is being thrown by each side in giant globs of mana, storms of ice, bolts of lightning, fireballs that split and split again and explode on contact. The castle itself is blown into a skeleton of its former self, and it looks as though it could collapse any moment. The Kelveren forces have been pushed up against its walls. They're not just about to lose - they're about to be annihilated.

You sense something in the enemy army, which, here and there, flies the banner of Kan-Abar. It's a feeling you've felt before...and one you sincerely hoped you'd never feel again. A dark, rotating sphere protects the core of the Kanian forces.

The shield of a demon lord.

Only now, there's two of them. And one of them is headed directly for the castle, flying through the air.

Magic is launched by the defenders, but the demon deflects it easily. It's seconds before he arrives, a lone behmoth to deliver the final crushing blow to the Kelverens.

Unless they've found out the truth about Jacob's Field...in which case, he's going for the key.

In any case, you need to move.

>con't with choices

>Flee the battle. Evinbrook is fallen; the best you can do is let Fang know what's happening, and make a stand elsewhere.
>Attack the flying demon lord; stop his plan, whatver it is

Plan of action time.

>>25842532
>>25842480
Pretty much this.

Given the gravity of the situation, we go in full stealth, find the key, and escape. We compress, use the silence shard, and put the last of our mana into a nightshroud. We zip in as a fleck of shadow.

Getting inside safely (and without provoking demons/soldiers) is the primary hurdle. Once we have done that we can explore the inside of the castle while stealthed. if we really get in a pinch, we can escape through the walls with Schattenkreig or activate hypersonic if things really go downhill (Dave possessing a Demon Lord)

The key takes priority as it is irreplaceable, but if we have the opportunity we want to find the duke's airship experiments and take everything not welded to the floor with adamantium.

For these purposes, I would suggest getting Analyze, as it would let us search well without breaking stealth/pinging everyone around.

Anything that we can't take or that is redundant we consume, hopefully refilling some of our mana and bringing us back up to enough for us to by Darkness Within like everyone wants.

Ok, so let's get some opinions.

Obvious stealth options include compress, and then shadowmeld, which you can spend any amount of mana on and which lasts until stealth is broken.

You could also use the Silence shard, which can assist stealth rolls.

What's the plan? Full stealth, then fly in? How much mana on shadowmeld? (Note that you could do as much as a 10-mana strength shadowmeld as this would only cost you 8 mana with oneness)
>>
Lets go the full 9-yards

Compress
10 mana shadowmeld
Silence Shard.

Compress.

Full mana shadowmeld.

Blink across open areas to get to more concealed locations for creeping though the darkness.

Full Solid Snake up in this bitch. I would really rather not fight a demon lord, even if we probably would be a match for it right now. It has backup, we don't.

Also buy Analyze.
>>
>>25842682
>>25842659
AH.
Totally forgot about blink.

If we can, compress first then locate a relatively unoccupied spot on the battlements.

Blink there and then shadowmeld. (or shadowmeld first if we can blink without breaking stealth)

Accually, buy Analyze first so we can properly locate a location.

We need it anyway for scouting silently, and we will get the exp back from eating stuff in the castle anyways.
>>
>>25842659
Stealth flight for as long as we can risk toward the attacking demon lord then shattenkrieg straight into his anus (literal or metaphorical depending on you.)

We don't even have to risk a straight up brawl if we can take him down for long enough to assist the defenders in fending him off. A few desperate defenders is a lot easier to sneak by than a pillaging army.

Look, we don't even know where the key is and we don't have time to look for it. We need to use deem scan from outside the castle before activating stealth. We will not be able to use it from inside the castle, and it will be a good way of distracting the enemy army for long enough to sneak in.
>>
>>25842678
>>25842682

These are good ideas. I'll save the Silence shard for backup.

-------------
-------------

You're not here to fight a war - and against two demon lords, you doubt you'd get very far. You Compress your aura, forcing your power under control, and it withers down to a quiet nub of shadow. You then draw your magic over your like a cloak, melding into the smoke that covers the sky.

The demon lord has a head start. You eye the tower. You could blink to the bottom entrance, or the upper portion of the castle, or search for an alternate entrance. The Duke would probably leave something as important as the key in that underground chamber...but how to get in...

>>25842871

>>
>>25842768
We still have it.

We were at 17 last thread, and there was an argument where a bunch of nibblers wanted to buy Darkness Within and charge the demon lords.

We can still get it, and i'm sure most of us do want it, but now isn't the best time, and even if we get an upgrade or two we will probably get a lot of EXP from eating magic stuff in Duke's lab, so they were probably just trying to slip in and end of thread screw over before SM left.

>>25842839
We only won against the last one (barely at that) because we had an army holding off it's army and one of the then strongest angels pounding on it with light magic.

That and it got killed after it had nullled all magic and not realized that flint's parasite would act like ablative armor.

>>25842871
What kind of defenses are on the lower entrance?

>>25842871

>>25842871
>>blink into the upper portion of the tower
>>
>>25842871

>blink into lower entrance

we know that there was some tantalizing shit in the Duke's basement, it's probably down there.
>>
>>25842871

hmmmm. Blink to the bottom, head straight for the bottom of the dungeon, try inking our way through the cracks, if that fails, then use brute force to bust open the door. don't want to use nightflare as there may be other goodies hiding in the Duke's private lab...
>>
>>25842926

>>
>>25842970
So do we have any kind of bead on what defenses are on the different entrances?

And can we use analyze without breaking stealth?
>>
I agree, buy analyze. Not only will it help us get the key but it migh help when the demon lord inevetibly finds us.
>>
>>25843006

>>
The battle is mostly on the east side of the castle, expanding into the hills on your left. The castle town surrounding the lower entrance has a lot of Kelverens, but they're focusing on putting out fires and evacuating anyone left downriver. The main lower entrance has only light guards - a few mages, too, though.

The upper portions of the castle are mostly devoid of life. Most of the archers are dead, targeted by the demon lords. A few mages are still using the broken outcroppings to launch magical attacks, but they're fleeing as the demon lord flaps closer.

----------------
----------------

It seems like "find an alternate route" is popular.

You could use Deep Focus, but it has a chance of alerting magically-sensitive individuals to your presence. They will have a vague sense of your power and location, but that won't break stealth.

Alternatively, you could repeatedly use your shorter-range "Focus". This would help you search, but it would still take more time.

Ok, buying analyze. It's not that expensive, and there's a lot of agreement for it.

Note that analyze is for things like trap detection, picking up extra details, and rolling to find an enemy's weakness... that sort of thing. It will help you realize there's a hidden switch under the dust, but it won't let you find something you don't know the location of.

You use Deep Focus.

The presence of the two demon lords overwhelms your senses, almost bleaching out the background. Their shadow...it isn't right. It's twisted...an awkward copy of real shadow. The rest of the mages of the battle appear as pinpricks of elemental light that dot the fields. You feel other auras turn their attention to you briefly, noting your position, but they quickly shift their focus elsewhere. It seems that the chaos of the battle is camouflage enough, for the moment.

Unfortunately, you don't find any alternate entrance.

What do you do now?

>try again

This is the worst possible plan.
>>
>>25843616
I'm cool with this
>>
>>25843645
Um no? I don't want to fight him. I want to blink up there, search the room before him, and then run down to the bottom of the tower searching for the key if it's not at the top.
>>
>>25843645
No, the general idea with that one is to follow the Demon Lord because he might be going for something we're unaware of.
>>
>>25843597
>go for the upper tower. Maybe the demon lord knows something you don't.
>>
>>25843597
>Lower entrance

Demon lord is headed there, and we don't want to get in it's way.

That and it's fairly obvious that the duke wouldn't keep anything important up there.
Or if he did, it was probably moved lower into the castle as the battle wore on.

We already know that one of our goals, the airship research, is in the depths, so that's probably where we want to go.

>>25843687
It's mostly a factor of risk. we don't want to get waylaid even by the demons surrounding the Lord, and if it somehow reaches us, our plans are screwed.

Speaking of which, how far is the demon lord from where we want to be on the tower. We would have seen it with deep focus.
>>
>>25843749
Whoops. Meant to say that the -Upper entrance- is where the demon lord is headed.

It's a few moments from landing on a ruined balcony which, if you remember, was a few floors below the duke's quarters. You know which window is the duke's own, though.

HE SURE WONT FIND US, GUYS.

You blink into the Duke's window, and for a moment, you sit there, silent.

You're pretty sure the Demon Lord hasn't detected you. You can feel the ball of Not-Shadow land beneath you, and prowl forward. You don't think it's detected you. It looks like you'll have a moment to search while it makes it's way up a few -

The room rumbles. The sound of stone cracking snaps through the walls. The demon's presences gets closer. It feels...diseased.

It's coming up straight through the floor, and there's only two more floors. You're sure it doesn't know you're here...it's just taking the most direct route.

But...why would it land under you, and then climb upward?

There has to be something here - something it just now detected.

What do you do?

You Analyze the room carefully...but you can't find anything that stands out. Then again, the duke probably wouldn't leave anything important just lying around in his room.

Another rumble lets you know that you've run out of time. You clear the threshold just as the carpet is rent open in a shower of stone.

You get a glimpse of a long, rotting arm. It has to many joints to be humanoid. A stench like fouled meat left in the sun grips the air.

And then, you flit away down the hall. When the presence lingers in the duke's quarters, you know you're safe, for the moment.

Honestly, we don't need the silence shard here after this.

We can repair it when we escape, but getting away from the demon lord and to the key is the current goal. We can be less stealthy after we have slipped out of it's grasp.

We won't need to sneak out because we can blast out at maximum speed and fly out over the ocean to distract any pursuers.

Even if they can match our speed, we currently have the HP to take hits from the sky-sever to stay in the air.
>>
You feel the ugly aura of the demon sitting behind you, and you almost instinctively reach for the power you've so recently consumed...Silence. You need all the help you can get.

You touch the shard. Its power rises into you -

-------------------------------
Warning!! -- Warning!! -- Warning!!
-------------------------------

Automatic warning system activated. Response: basic protocol violation.

Current power division protocols cannot maintain 100% seal integrity if more than one power node falls below 30% capacity.

If warning is overridden, a seal breach is possible. Recommendation: use alternate power source.

You release the shard. You can't take the risk.

You sprint down the hall, and turn toward the stairs -

A mage rushes past you. To your senses, he's a bright, flickering light of earth.

You sprint faster.

The hallway behind you explodes with force. The light of the mage vanishes in a torrent of oozing green gas. You leap down the stairs, hopping from landing to landing. The gas roils down right on your heels. The wooden railings of the hiss and dissolve as it passes.

You sprint faster, bouncing off the walls of the stairwell so hard the stones crack under the force. Your wings keep your stable, and your limbs grind your path clear. The gas licks and whips at your heels, but you stay clear. People in the hallways you pass are not so lucky. You wince at their screams as their skin melts away.

After a time, it stops , but doesn't remain where it is. It gets sucked back up the stairs, as if it was part of the demon itself, and it is simply retracting a long limb.

You're already in the dungeons. You move down, pass the plushier prisons, and soar down the final stairwell to the basement room.

It's dusty, but disheveled - obvious that it's been recently used. The central slab holds a slight tingle of lightning. You quickly scan the room, but you don't see or sense anything connected to the slab. It offers no cracks to Ink through.

What do you do?

>you don't have time for this. Smash the slab out of the way.
>Analyze the room, try to find a way to open it

You Analyze the room.

You hunt for something you've missed, but you've scoured the room before, for a lot longer. There are no switches, no plates, nothing connected to the slab. None of the other stones in the room have markings or respond to pressure.

You tried brute strength before...but you're a lot stronger, now.

The demon lord's presence begins to move. It's starting down at a steady rate. You've only got a minute, maybe two.

You don't have time to keep mucking around. Limbs sprout and grow from your body as you decompress back to normal size, a handful of fists to pulverize the rock and claws to scrape it away. You slam straight through at the room's weakest point - the slab that must be some sort of entrance.

<I'm no enemy!> you shout below. <But I'm coming through, one way or another!>

You raise your hands, bracing yourself to chew through rock and lightning magic -

- when suddenly, the slab lifts up off the ground. A flash of lightning magic lifts it from below. As soon as it's cleared the entrance, you duck inside. A ladder presents itself, but you ignore it, simply falling straight down to the ground.

You land with a heavy crunch, and raise yourself up.

Standing in front of you is none other than Duke Vellik, and his assistant, the primly dressed man.

"Long time no see, Shadow."

Above you, the heavy slab returns to its position, sealing the exit tight.

What do you do?

<...you have a lot of explaining to do. Make it quick.>

"It's a very long story." The duke gestures to a nearby table.

Your eyes widen when you see Magnock's soul-splitting illusion-inducing staff. <How the hell did you get that?>

"Simple. The Ring City confiscated it. Lucifer bribed me with it. Now, I wanted to be in two places at once, immediately...but it turns out spirit magic just doesn't work that well with lightning magic. Took a while to get it under control. Hope my mischievous other self didn't cause you too much trouble."

<He almost killed Flint!>

"Almost doesn't count," the duke says smugly.

You heave a sigh. <We have bigger problems. You've got two demon lords knocking down your castle, and one of them is going to be here in less than a minute.>

"I'm aware." The duke turns, and leads you toward the back of the room. "Feast your eyes on legendary dwarven technology."

You stare at the object on the wall. <...so it's a big suit of armor.>

"Powered by magic," Vellik says. "A lifetime to forge. Created for an elite class of dwarven berserker-mages known as Geb's Hammer. Now, it's supposed to use an earth dynamo, but lightning magic should work, too. Theoretically."

<I don't see a lightning dynamo anywhere.>

"You're looking at him."

>>
You shake your head. <I've tried being a dynamo before, and it almost ripped me apart. That was for an airship...but I'm much stronger than a human. We need to leave.>

"Shadow, come now." Vellik raises Magnock's staff. "Use your imagination. The staff has been...handled." It glows, and crackles. From the duke's form steps an exact replica of himself. You glance between them, uncertain as to which is real anymore. Their power is halved evenly between them.

"I hold off the demon with the armor," one Vellik says.

"And we escape with the rest of the room," the other Vellik says. He gestures to a load of books and trinkets and pieces of metal piled into carts. Now that you have a moment, you see that the room is already cleared out. An opening at the end of the workshop leads into a dark tunnel.

<With half your power, you won't last long.>

"Long enough for what remains of the city to escape...and for us to run under the cover of night," the duke says. "Once we're clear of the danger zone, I'll have you carry us to safety."

<What destination did you have in mind?>

"Right now..." The duke on the left falters slightly. "Well...that's about as far as I've gotten, actually."

This pretty much sounds like the best, most reasonable way to put it.

So, you'll offer the duke sanctuary in "haven"...

...next time. Cause I gotta get some sleep.

After the bs with Flint? Auriel will throw have him in irons.
>>
>>25846845
thread time?
>>
>>25846822
Haven is filled with over a hundred of Spirit mages(his opposing element) who are loyal to us. Why the fuck go with Fang, who we can't trust, over them to keep him in line?
>>
>>25846838
There was supposed to be a "want the duke to" between 'Don't' and 'Know,' I swear.
>>

Updates will be on the twitter
>>
>>25846828
The words following "I offer is" means excluding those words. Because it's the words FOLLOWING.
Geeze.
>>
>>25846771

He is dangerous in Haven to Haven itself.

>>25846771

Fang already does what he wants. And he is the only one with the cunning to keep the duke in line. He will be far more useful in Archon than in Haven and less of a risk for us or those in haven too.
>>
>>25846882
Any chance of being able to do the update more than a couple hours before the thread start?
>>
>>25846890
Then why not just say, "The words following 'is', without 'compared to that'"
Or better yet, "Do not say any of these words, except for 'Haven'"
>>
WAIT A FUCKING SECOND

Magcock's doubles all vanished the second we hit them.

THE DUKE #2 STAYED ALL CORPSEY LONG ENOUGH TO DUMP INTO THE SEA.

maybe that happens with multiple clones and it takes a more solid effect when only one or two are made?

Get a twitter alert that pings your phone with a message as to when someone has updated it. Or do it with your computer and never turn the computer off, etc.

He is smart enough to get away from Haven and with the knowledge of its location he could be a liability. His knowledge makes him useful we all know that, but Haven doesn't have the resources (yet) to use it. In Archon he will be more useful and will have the resources to work with.

Also if we trust Fang with Abigail, we can trust him with this sneaky fucker. Fang is not the person that could let the Duke have his way with everything.
>>
>>25847042
not saying we can't offer Archon as an option, but as unlikely as it is he'll agree he's not really in a position to coup de ta Haven. especially when an alliance of the north (including Great Forest) against the angels is part of his long term goal
>>
>>25847042
I just don't want literally the two most conniving and manipulative characters to be butt buddies in Archon.
>>
>>25847255
Fang would be top.
Working on the shipping art now, thanks for the inspiration anon-san~!
>>
>>25847310
"But Fang sama, that magic is forbidden"

"Just like our love Duke chan <3"
>i can ship this, right up there with Tyreal x Hamil
>>
>>25847106

I am not worry about a coup. I am worry about him banishing one night went anyone less expected it. He might not actually try to sell us out but I bet that Ring City could offer him a nice juice deal for the our location. I just don't see him growing attach to Haven too much went he can get better places(As in commodities and resources) to give him refuge.

If anything else we should talk to Auriel about this before even bringing him near the forest. Could we at least compromise on that?

>>25847310

Main reason I don't worry about them being near each other. Fang could know how to control him and use him correctly. I mean we TRUST FANG WITH ABIGAIL and we don't trust him with the duke without a kingdom?
>>
>>25847388
Fang has a direct reason to care about Abigail intensely; she's his own flesh and blood.

Both the Duke and Fang are going to do whatever puts them in the best position, they're already big enough liabilities alone.
They either try to kill one another in plot, or work together for whatever they see best.
>>
>>25847388
sure, so long as you remember that he really has no options right now. Kelvere is crumbling, Arland hates him, Fang might not kill him on principle and everyone else is either against the empire, would use him as only a tool, or imprison him for suspected working with shadow/against angels
>while a hard path, siding with us gives him the option to both be free of empire, take back Kelvere at some point and cement an alliance with the north
>>
>>25847388
We trust him with Abigail because she is his niece and he has her interests at heart. Velik has neither of these qualities.
>>
>>25846681
Wait, ask him who is supposed to be his corpse in Haven.
Ask if he is the real mccoy?
