Hello, fine gentlemen of /tg/! I return from the land of distant roleplays, that unique patch of the internet we all trod, wherein none may know what to expect, but it can certainly be expected that there shall be interesting events that transpire within it. From the mind that brought you Tarrasque Wizard and Alphonse Kapown and the Dragon Kingdom is a new tale!

The tale of Hydra begins in a fantasy-magitech hybrid setting, which has been slowly turning more and more magitech as time went on since my joining. My character, a fine fellow by the name of Gerald, started in this setting as a simple concept: Make the ugliest, most physically horrifying, disfigured looking character imaginable, but otherwise make him endlessly pleasant and kind to others. Mister Rogers-level kindness to people that are nice to him, but still physically hideous and repulsive. His objective was to be the accumulation of wealth and power-- pure accumulation. While this sounds like a rather flat character, his all-consuming greed would lead to some very interesting results.

Gerald started with little to no wealth to speak of. Though he had no combat abilities to speak of (he was about 400lbs and had no magical talents), his mind-- in due time-- would be his greatest asset. He only ever went on one adventure (which consisted of him feeding the party ideas while providing minimal fire support with a crossbow), and that was enough to reassure him that he should never go on another one ever again (without an army at his back.)
>>
>>25850439
Now, this isn't the meat of the story, so my apologies there, but I think that the meat of the story deserves some exposition in order for the full scale of things to be conveyed. Gerald did not make friends, as could be expected-- most of the heroes in this setting were attractive or extremely attractive on some scale or another. Even the villains all had various levels of sexy attributed to them (and partners in relationships had a tendency of hot swapping faster than the engine parts of a NASCAR racer.)

So, here was Gerald, a hideous, repulsive, fat little man with a desire for money. His quest for wealth started simple enough: He bought himself a logging company, cutting down trees. He then expanded his family's home into an estate, growing crops. Then he bought another logging company... and another...

Why? Because the mechanics worked in Gerald's favor. It cost him 150k GP to open a branch of his logging company, which would churn over 200k GP each season it was in operation. Considering the nation this took place in had an abundance of unexplored wilderness and forests (which were prime for the flavor of the week monster invasions to hop out of), this was essentially an endless money pile.

But our fair merchant was, throughout all of this, harassed. The setting pivoted around one central Inn, and it was that Inn that he, like all others, tended to relax in. Primarily because the Inn was in the biggest economic and trade hub for the nation, and it made sense to visit somewhere popular and rich in heroes (so as to be considered on-par with heroes by association.) Of course, this resulted in a number of... incidents. I won't get too into detail on the incidents, unless /tg/ should request, but needless to say, Gerald had endured quite a bit of abuse. He had his bodyguards murdered in a fit of violent whimsy by the owner of the establishment. He, himself, was frequently hit, pushed around, tripped, and verbally abused, including at least one incident where he was stabbed in the hand for accidentally grabbing someone else's drink (Gerald was also a bit of a glutton. A "bit", if you consider four entrees being a snack a bit overboard.)

But that's neither here nor there: For his instant reputation of being evil, he still could conduct business freely. The head GM of this setting was rather indifferent, for a time, on the notion of economics on the setting. He later admitted that when I came to him with business ideas, he just gave me arbitrary numbers and values for what that business would come up with... for a time.

Why would he have such oversight? Because he had GMPCs that were much more interesting to him (and whatever girlfriend of the time he had, which would always have characters become the IC girlfriend/wife of his GMPCs.) Said GMPCs can also be recounted, but they include the super-ninja-warrior owner of the primary IC establishment, a magitech super-scientist that was also General (And somehow Admiral) of an America (FUCK YEAH!) expy nation, the warrior prince of a lost nation that wielded a hammer that dematerialized things in a single hit (among other powers), and more.
>>
Eh, he's no Wasteland Warrior, TwoDee, or Waffle House Millionaire.
>>
>>25850578
>Incidents.
Might be interesting, but let's finish the main story first.
>>
>>25850578
So Gerald kept accumulating wealth, as the other heroes focused on their villains of the month, and the GMPCs went about in their own dramas/superstories.

The villains in this setting weren't of a much greater caliber. There was one DM (The setup was essentially Head GM, with a couple DMs under him that could run stories of their own) that I genuinely respected there, and still keep in contact with. He was a clever man, but that's irrelevant for the most part (though slightly relevant later).

So, our fair Gerald, by virtue of being ugly, had earned a lot of scorn. His money continued to accumulate, and after a point, he decided to make a bit of a tactical sacrifice. He ended up arranging for a necromancer to stay in his estate for a while, in exchange for a "lifetime" supply of eternal youth potions (including the formula for said potions.) Said potions basically staved off the effects of aging so long as it was taken once a day. I knew what wold happen, but I realized that having effective immortality would be endlessly useful.

Of course, one of the GMPCs (Super Ninja Bar Owner) instantly found this out, because America Expy's intelligence division is everywhere (including, Gerald later found out, inside of his homeland's intelligence agency.)

But... he did nothing with this. Baffling, but apparently the GM was more interested in drama than actual consequences, so Gerald went on because he knew that the other man couldn't produce evidence without compromising intelligence officers in the process. Gerald's wealth continued to expand for a time, throughout all of this abuse.
>>
We want it all!!
>>
>>25850675
Then came the big purchases. Gerald's wealth was paltry compared to the fancy artifacts that the "big heroes" wielded, but Gerald's wealth was different: It was liquid wealth. In time, Gerald invested in part ownership of a startup PMC. A mercenary company, which he later gained 100% control of after the second owner was executed (for killing a tax collector), and the third owner essentially lost interest in running it and just became one of the senior military officers.

The PMC grew at a standard rate, set by the GM, of one soldier per OOC day. Gerald made more purchases, building "Pauper Palaces", massive homeless shelters that recruited these homeless into the PMC for training. One soldier became eight soldiers.

Part one of the plan.

Next, Gerald went on to later build a massive steel mill. The America Expy previously held a stranglehold on the planet's steel supplies, but after a plot arc regarding the "Merchant's and Traders Association" (Basically some kind of super-trade monopoly, which actually worked against merchant's interests) dissolving, that monopoly could no longer be enforced upon other nations.

Now, I'm leaving a lot of details out, I'll admit. Throughout this, Gerald had placed money in a lot of smaller projects that didn't pan out. A faction of religious zealots, which later turned against him (because the player, OOCly, was a gigantic twit and let that influence IC), was one of his biggest early investments.

Regardless, that steel mill proved to be a fantastic idea, but only because of a certain precursor event. Gerald had, in his expansions, ended up hitting a massive quartz vein. Quartz in this setting was extremely, insanely valuable, for a very important reason: It was the fuel for all magitech goods and industry. Airships, spell guns, communications. All of it ran off quartz. Gerald had basically struck oil, and his income skyrocketed because of that. He saved that money, though, for this steel mill.

>>25850771
Now, Alphonse, you may be saying, why would you save this money for a lousy steel mill? This Gerald character just struck oil! Milk it for what it's worth and really live it up!

No. Because that would leave Gerald flat-- he would have his money, but he'd still be abused, vilified to his face (yes, there were people who directly insulted him, even as he worked to clean up poverty in the city), and had numerous other injustices. Never mind the fact that, throughout all of this, the GM constantly bemoaned the fact that "Team Good" never did anything to stop "Team Evil", or never made any initiatives of their own.

So... The steel mill. It was a massive project-- I will put the figures for it here. Using the massive amount of GP that his quartz mine brought him, he elected to put his foot down and make the nation free from dependence on foreign steel.

He dropped 26 million GP into steel mill... and ensured that there was a hidden basement level built into a massive structure that was, more or less, larger than a number of castles put together.

>x4,000 Basic Smithies [$20,000,000] [4,000 Workers]
>x500 Iron Bars Windows [$300,000]
>x500 Iron Doors [$2,500,000]
>-x500 Good Locks [$400,000]
>x400 Basic Offices/Studies [$800,000] [400 Clerks]
>x100 Barracks [$400,000]
>x50 Guard Posts [$150,000]
>x4 Gatehouse [$40,000]
>x4 Amazing Locks [$6,000]

And yes, those figures are correct-- four thousand smithies, all running at once, churning out steel. The reason for that will soon become evident.
>>
>>25850839
The other heroes were not thinking anything of this at this point. Gerald had built a steel mill and had a quartz mine. Big whoop, right? So now he was probably gonna build a magitech factory and then make more money. His stupid figures grew bigger... Let's go back to fighting the hybrid of Zeus and a Titan that is also the ex-Emperor of a muli-planet-spanning Nazi empire. (Yes, that was an antagonist.)

Instead, Gerald pays for a large airship docking and shipyard facility. Huh? Yes. Ten square miles of land, a few hours north of the capital city in question, all purchased and cleared out to build a sprawling airship facility, complete with shipyard capacity. It could accommodate hundreds of airships at once, and it essentially became one of the major hubs for allowing traders access to the city. Its construction capabilities also enabled it to make airship travel subsequently cheaper-- all using his steel, and all of it using his quartz.

The bigger PCs were starting to take notice of Gerald's big, flashy purchases, much like Don Bot at a night club. One of the other players privately mentioned that his character could crush Gerald's entire empire in the snap of an eye. Which he probably could, because his character was a Tony Stark expy that armed the America expy, and also was the first man to reach the moon (in a magitech spaceship.)

Regardless, that was irrelevant, because Gerald now had everything he needed. Team Good wasn't going to sit and lay down anymore.

Almost. That DM I mentioned before, that I still talk with? He had similar sentiments about the state of "Team Good" in the setting. He had a particularly clever Elf Wizard, a woman that was as sharp as steel and as cold as ice, currently looking to further her studies. Gerald, recognizing this, hired her aboard to study golemcraft. She quickly became not only a proficient golemcrafter, but also a very potent ally, with her ending up as head golemcrafter.

Well damn! High roller here!
>>
>>25850931
Why? Because she ended up inventing something very interesting: Golems that could use spells. Similar to a Runic Guardian from the Monster Manual, but different in that the quartz spell crystals they used could be swapped out. You could have a heavy artillery platform one minute, then a civil construction device the next. They ran two million a unit, but at this point, Gerald was running around 96 million GP a season. Pennies.

Now, you're probably saying, "ALPHONSE! GET ON WITH IT ALREADY!"

I am! I am! I'm just weaving you fine folks a tale of just where this is all going. So this clever Elf Head Golemancer is currently producing these super-golems for Gerald, in addition to other fun little inventions. Golem turrets as well-- think the turrets from Portal, but with the benefit of shield spells linked to a centralized power grid. No overpowering them-- they'll pin you down and eat your men up.

So... We now have our royal flush of cards. Quartz mine, steel mill, PMC, and golem factory.

The GM was getting paranoid at this point of just what all of this could be put towards. Gerald had attained the status of one of the wealthiest people in the entire country-- if not the wealthiest. Gerald was no longer being physically abused by others since he had spent a bit of money on Runic Guardian bodyguards.

For those not familiar... Runic Guardians are essentially stone golems that can be equipped with any number of spells, high-level or low-level, and on top of having Fast Healing, they also had Damage Reduction 30. All of this, with the additional boon of being able to absorb any damage their owner takes, assuming they're in direct proximity. With the added boon of some basic illusion magic, Gerald wasn't just walking around, he was walking around with four Dolph Lundgren clones to keep him safe.
>>
>>25851035
Change was on the horizon. But not enough. The villains were still running rampant. One villain in particular was getting too strong-- the former God of Undeath, who had "died", had ended up physically manifesting to his wife, impregnating her, and then she gave birth to him (meaning he was a God that could freely roam the planet in physical form.)

The fact that this God of Undeath was also situated on a floating home base that was basically Team Evil's capital site and beating heart was another concern.

So... Gerald decided that enough was enough. He was effectively immortal, and he'd be damned if he was going to let a God of Undeath put a stopper to him enjoying eternal life (and obesity.)

This is where Hydra comes in. If you want to tl;dr, this is where you can start reading, because Hydra was the accumulation of all of these resources. Gerald began by picking out a foreign commander, and having him placed under Geas to never name Gerald as the original founder of this organization.

An organization funded by unmarked currency bars, previously established by the GM as "untraceable currency", delivered via dead drop. This comes in importantly later on.

Millions of GP gets poured into this project. That massive shipyard? That begins production of the frame, taking the huge volume of steel churned out from the mill, crafting it into the hull of this superweapon. If the Death Star was constructed in secrecy, then this was crafted in the dead of night. The PMC gained a shell corporation, which consumed vast swaths of the airship parts market, buying up the necessary parts, engine syncs, and other parts needed. Most of the parts were so large they couldn't even be bought on the public market-- they had to be constructed in private.
>>
>>25851035
>Golem turrets as well-- think the turrets from Portal, but with the benefit of shield spells linked to a centralized power grid. No overpowering them-- they'll pin you down and eat your men up.

Spell Turrets are a actual thing if you were interested. Mostly I know of them from turning strongholds from the stronghold builder book into mobile artillery platforms.

Liking the story so far.

During the formation of Hydra, a plot arc came up, putting that steel mill's secret basement into operation. Said plot arc was oriented around the America Expy having an alternate dimension of them (that was much stronger than them) invade the Prime Material. Thanks to some quick thinking by the Elf Wizard, this America Expy Alternate's tanks and mecha (Yes, they apparently had magitech mecha) were captured intact.

Allowing for them to be reverse-engineered in this hidden underground area. Tanks and mecha for the homeland to use, the individual cost of which being quite large, but to Gerald's huge amount of money, it was all paltry.

But back to Hydra. Their home base was designed to rival Team Evil's capital-- not just rival, in fact, but actually annihilate it. Huge amounts of money pouring into the vessel and its crew. Most notably was Hydra's primary asset: Its commandos. Each one was equipped with an absolutely ludicrous amount of gear, some ten million GP in total. Their rifles could be quantified as small grenade launchers in themselves, never mind the reflexes, strength, and other special abilities their gear gave them.

There were eighteen of them by this story's culmination. Eighteen men and women, divided into three squads of six, each squad having the support of a near-epic spellcaster put on retainer.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! I mentioned the PMC, which is getting eight men a day, recruiting from the slums and other groups.

They number almost twenty-five thousand at this point. A massive number of people, soldiers, spread out across the nation, gaining experience in fighting. Not just experience, but also keeping their true strength unreadable by virtue of being decentralized.

The golem factory is burgeoning with numbers now. More and more of these mighty superheavy golems (as they're thought of-- their name being Onda Norsii) are coming off the presses, and Gerald is quietly sitting back. Hydra begins purchasing fighter craft via the shell companies, as well as some "stripped down" combat shuttles from the America Expy nation. Shuttles and fighters that they rearm and reequip using their own resources.

Hydra's operations begin in earnest. Their first attack is on a major baron/supporter of the God of Undeath's side. A single six-man squad in a combat shuttle, sent to capture or assassinate the baron in question, annihilate his officer staff, and level the baron's keep, aiding those resisting his efforts at invasion and expansion.

Unfortunately, due to chance, they weren't so lucky to catch the Baron in his home. What they did manage, however, was a total annihilation of the Baron's entire command staff, barring a lone minor lieutenant that fled the battle. Death Knights, Vampires, and even a Vampire Lord Wizard were all caught in the slaughter. Metal Gear's Raiden had nothing on what the suped-up super soldiers of Hydra could do. Helmets of Telepathy gave them instantaneous squad-level communication, and their Gloves of Dexterity turned their heavy rifles into death-spewing super rifles. Vampires fell like wheat before the scythe, massive Death Knights struggling to land a blow on men that turned ethereal on a whim.

It was not an easy fight, but victory was had, no Hydra soldiers falling, and the Baron's keep erupting into flames and debris as a crate of blast disks demolished the structure.

Their subsequent mission did not end quite as well, raiding an Illithid research base (psionics sucks), but they did succeed in obtaining something valuable.
>>
>>25851426
Troll Regeneration. Hydra's soldiers could now regenerate as trolls did, their commandos effectively gods of war. All the while, their flagship, a 300 ton iron-hulled behemoth, was under construction. The airship itself was positively massive, to the scale where it oustripped all those before it. America Expy's battleships used one supermassive core-- this thing used several in unison.

I spoke with one of the players that was key in designing Team Evil/The God of Undeath's capital site, and the defenses therein. While it incorporated a number of Badass Boasts from him, I realized something very important in the conversation: Team Evil's defenses were mostly oriented towards keeping heroic attackers away. Anti-teleport fields and walls dividing sections of the city all were fine and dandy for keeping heroic attackers out, but Hydra didn't need or use that: Their ship had the shielding to survive heavy bombardment, and the armaments on it would enable it to freely bombard the city with massed broadsides. Combined with its troop contingents, it could easily insert all of the Commandos into the city, as well as the entirety of the PMC. 25,000 souls and a score of regenerating commandos.

The God of Undeath was completely and utterly fucked. His airship fleet was mostly troop transports and light airships-- vessels intended to provide support for the ground armies of undead, rather than win engagements against a flying fortress like what Hydra had.

Before I did so, however, I needed to test something very important. I needed to see how the GM would react to Team Good actually making waves.

Gerald set things in motion. The heroes danced back and forth in their usual games, until an antagonist-- as usual-- acted blatantly. The daughter of a major villain (essentially, an Osama Bin Laden Expy with extra EEEEEEEEVUL) appeared, making her big appearance by wearing her father's armor and wielding a "Chaos Blade" (which was basically an artifact weapon that was aligned to the Far Realms of the setting).

Said character ended up murdering a squad of City Guard, and getting her hands on a bunch of relic books from the Generic God of Good/Nature, which outlined how to do a True Resurrection. She outlined how she was going to bring back Daddy Dearest who never loved her to the heroes that arrived on-scene, and then threatened to destroy another artifact she had on-hand (somehow) that was important to one of the big hero PCs on the scene (It was a key item to that character's personal quest at the time). Unless, of course, she was allowed to go free.

Nuh uh. Not this shit again. I ask the GM if it's okay (since it was his plot, and I'm not that huge a prick) for Hydra to get involved. He affirms. Hydra portals in using their home base's facilities. Six-man commando squad in full kit, plus high-level caster, plus four heavy golems for fire support. Golems lock down into siege mode, commandos train their rifles on the woman, caster Dimension Locks her to prevent her from teleporting out.
>>
>>25851660
She's trapped now. Head caster orders her to drop her McGuffin sword and surrender, since she's under arrest for murder. It's around this point that the GM realizes just what's unraveling before his eyes: These guys will not only be able to roflstomp his antagonist, but most antagonists so far, all using gear bought on the civilian markets.

She refuses. Caster repeats his demand, because they don't care about individual PC's McGuffin, compared to having a major antagonist and leader of a large group of villains returns. She threatens to smash PC's McGuffin if they don't comply.

Caster uses an illusion to make it seem that the McGuffin in her hand just got replaced with a block of wood... and that he now has said McGuffin.

This character has no magical detection abilities. GM realizes this. I know this. Team Good just had its first major victory. The months of him shit talking about nobody doing anything just hit the fan. There's now a new player on the block, and it's not only actively pursuing other groups, it's not even using fancy artifacts like the main players do.

GM thinks.
GM thinks.
GM cannot think.
GM snaps.

>>25851652

>>25851747
The woman smashes her blade into the ground, and promptly blows up an entire city block in Evil Chaos-Nightmare Bad Stuff Energy, killing 500 people in the blast radius... Which the Hydra agents all survive, thanks to their protective gear and regeneration. GM enters full freakout mode as he realizes that his status quo is about to go flying out the window. Multiple GMPCs arrive on the scene and in force. The scientist uses "Portal tracking sensors" to locate where the portal they came in from originated. Another places the Hydra commandos under arrest for "Treason to the Crown", because the woman in question Allahu Ackbar'd rather than go into custody, which was their fault for "not giving her any other options."

Homeland nation promptly dispatches a capital ship to the origin site (out in the middle of the equivalent of the Atlantic Ocean, well away from national borders) to try and arrest the rest of them. GM goes on about how they're all going to be arrested... When I point out the fact that the fancy capital ship stats for his own ship would not, in fact, have the firepower to match the abilities of Hydra's mothership.

GM goes from snapping to unraveling when he sees this-- and recognizes that every single purchase is, in fact, available on the civilian market. Begins attempting guilt tripping about how I "betrayed [his] trust" and "clearly don't understand that it's not about winning, but about the story."

The same person that promoted that Team Good is too lazy is now trying to create the idea that this is all ruining everything, because Team Evil is supposed to be the winners.

Nope. GM's frothing reaches critical levels as he tries to convene a 'hearing' about what happened in the aftermath, to discuss a 'possible retcon' for what I had 'done wrong.'
>>
>>25851819
Eyebrows are raised at the idea. He tried to claim that he never bothered to look at everything Gerald had amassed, even though it had been organized into a single, frequently-updated thread on the setting's forum.

That was when other DMs started getting attacked. The Elf Wizard's player ended up getting attacked for letting their things be "associated with the Hydra incident."

Another player ended up being called a whore, slut, etc., for "leading on" one of his pet players (never date on the same internet site, folks!)

This chain of self-destruction only progressed further and further. I couldn't help but feel a bit sad that I had been the catalyst for this, but it felt refreshing to see just how things actually were. Multiple players abruptly left-- a mass emigration, though we all keep in contact through other means (the cool ones, at least.)

And all I can do now is simply sit back, lurking, as a group that once sported nearly twenty to thirty active members is now down to five or six lurkers.

Team Good wins. Sometimes, it wins more than it intends to.

Also, if you guys want particular stats, you have the ones for Hydra. but the capital city itself was rather unique. It was a floating rock, on top of which was the capital city of a dead kingdom. There were walls isolating the various sections of the city, and the city itself had multiple rings, with each ring getting progressively more well-defended. It had large anti-airship torpedo banks surrounding it, as well as the personal flagship of a lich mad scientist docked with the city. The city was engulfed in an anti-teleport field, which only had openings at the very edges of the city (said openings being well-defended). There also were a number of custom undead monsters and the like guarding it, not to mention followers of the God of Undeath and other such things.

A pretty solid fortress, but the Hydra mothership wasn't something to scoff at either.

Don't worry OP, I'll make sure to bump the thread so it's still here when you finally deliver.

About 7 hours since this post, did he start a new thread?
>>
>>25858774
Maybe he can't get ahold of defenseguy for double checking?

Bad news, everyone! Apparently I am running into some trouble properly formulating a full story from details given to me. However, I will try and bother some others I know... For now, I shall hold this tale on pause, and if the thread dies, I will make a new one.

In the meantime, post your own stories of roleplaying madness!

A shame, but thanks for what you've already written, and I look forward to when you continue it.

Bumping to prevent loss.
