>Stardust city is an Demi-plane created by a powerful bard/wizard lich who turned to necromancy to continue in unlife and into eternity her pursuit of music.

>Every year Stardust, whom the demi plane city is named after, invites all to her city in a grand artistic battle of music, dance, and combat for fame, glory, and bragging rights.

>Do you have what it takes to be this year's winner?

And thus forms the basis of a one off 3.5 game I wish to run with my group once we conclude our RT game. Would /tg/ be so kind as to offer ideas for contestants?
>>
>>25952926

This sounds pretty cool, give me a minute to think.
>>
>>25952926

Actually, OP, what are the limits of artistic expression? Are there categories? I mean, do we have sculptors competing against violinists, in a sort of massive talent show, or is it more structured?
>>
>>25952926

Are we inviting the artists from across time and space, or is it just from fantasy/medieval?

Bronco Buck and the 7 Square Dancers

Bucky, as he's known to friends, is said to be the greatest square dancer to ever live. He and his group of seven dancers perform incredible feats of acrobatic dancing skill...while wearing ten gallon hats and cowboy boots, which are on fire. The spurs of the boots are also on fire. The trails of fire forming intricate patterns and cutting close to the skin of other dancers is a big part of their routine.

You can play them as naive country bumpkins so your players feel superior and then have them come out and squaredance them into the ground.
>>
>>25953112

It ranges the spectrum but the biggest event is the dance off battle of the bands. If you ever heard battle song by Del it's sorta like that
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ShU5APE7wc

>>25953145

From across space and time, to encompass as many as possible. Outsiders included as well.
>>
>>25953181
Space and TIME?
Freddie Mercury at the battle of the bands, also Elvis.
>>
Klaus Nomi should be involved, considering how much he worked with Bowie. Other than that, any cool performer with a distinct mileau. Michael Jackson, Freddy Mercury, Lady Gaga, Daft Punk, Deadmau5. Figure out what artists your players like and include them too.
>>
>>25953181

Well, then you need to gather all kinds of historical figures and just throw them here and there for kicks. It could be blatant, or you could make a subtle reference. Have the party meet "Mikey" who is busy doing a Fresco on the ceiling of on of Stardust's halls.

To contribute:

Literature is art. You could have a debate between great writers/philosophers as an aside to the main competition. Side mission: convince the naive and idealistic Freddy Nietzsche that he needs to be more realistic to win the debate.

>>25953233

I'm loving this so far, here's what I've come up with so far, I have to take off for school after this so hopefully the thread still lives after I come back

>Michael Jackson as The Dancer in White
A gaunt figure in immaculate white robes who's hand is studded with rare gemstones. A full moon seems to follow him when he dances

>Freddie Mercury as Quick silver, the celestial champion
Leader of the celestial choir of the 7 Heavens, this assimar hair is as black as a starless night with a shine like polished metal.

>David Bowie as the Goblin King
A Tiefling with wild hair who rules the unrulely mob of Goblin back-up singers who tend to him whims and commands

Ugh, have to leave, please survive when I get back!

Come to think, if this is across time and space, you could invite any fictional character at all.

Its Bowie kicking costumed midgets into the air whilst foisting a baby around.

It is the very essence of Dance distilled into one moment.
>>
>>25953418

Ha!

I suppose since the PCs are getting invites, they're all great artists themselves...but with the sheer breadth of the invitees, you'll need a way to put them into a party.

How about all new attendees get shuttled into a room with a sort of "intro slide reel" similar to the beginning of Bioshock...only less eerie and more dramatically fabulous? That would serve to explain where they are, what they were doing, and give them a reason to stick together.

That, or their room assignments could be in close proximity. I assume the competition will take place over at least several weeks to get all the action in.
>>
>>25953466
Can't argue with that, I suppose.

Vampire artist who broods and wears long, dark leather coats. Typical 2edgy5me kid. He only paints in blood and all of his paintings are of incredible quality and depict happy landscapes. He is admired for his artistic skill, which he honed over the centuries. Also, the emo thing is a ruse, all part of a persona he puts on as an artist. He's quite a nice person, actually, and the blood is fake.

Ozzy Osbourne, Prince of Darkness.

"In song and in dance
I express myself as a member of a higher community
I have forgotten how to walk and speak
I am on the way toward flying into the air, dancing
My very gestures express enchantment
I feel myself a god
Supernatural sounds emanate from me
I walk about enchanted, in ecstasy, like the gods I saw walking in my dreams
I am no longer an artist
I have become a work of art
Welcome to the pleasure dome"

The party is eventually crashed by the thunderous and fiery appearance of the Four Kings: the Warlord, the Defender, the Master of the Wind, and the Dark Avenger. Together, they are led by the Immortal Warrior, the avatar and supreme champion of heavy metal. He is the Lord of Steel and the King of Kings, and he bears the sacred crown and the ring of providence.

They never really join the party per se, but set up camp just outside the city and raise a great mead-hall that echoes with the sound of thunder and the roar of the crowd.
>>
There's graffiti all over the city that says "Kilroy was here."

Everybody has seen it, but nobody has met Kilroy. If you're persistent and lucky, however, you'll meet someone who can whisper the legend to you...
>>
>>25952926

I, for one, am really interested in the character Stardust. Who is she? Why did she decide to do all this? Her backstory could play into things as a sidequest/segment of the main quest.
>>
The Red Iron Giant King's court have made Stardust city a regular destination as they travel the planar circuit known only as the Megaroad.

King Basara, with his red iron skin and spectacles, is a statuesque figure that many could fear if he was not well known as a staunch pacifist. The few who have forced him to wield his axe Fire Bomber tell tales that he can make planets dance.

Another amongst the court, the young Count Tenor, has drawn much attention with his aerial dances, enough that he has attracted the attention of both the Little Queen of Cats and the Stellar Fairy, rival songstresses.
>>
>>25954032

I hadn't really puzzled her out yet. I just had the thought of a perky bard/wizard lich who decapitated herself, stuffed her head in a box somewhere and walks around with an enchanted disco ball for a head while the rest of her body looks relatively normal (permancy gentle repose)

She's like an amalgam of Ulala and Jem
>>
>>25954521

So, is her decapitated head her own phylactery? Could be interesting.

You could always go the permanently enigmatic-mysterious route. Sometimes the best characters are the ones you never learn everything about...or about which there are many hints and rumors, but few explanations. The sprawling theories can become more satisfying than the truth.
>>
>>25954595

That would probably be best I could imagine someone wanting to uncover what's under the disco ball (it's not universally known she's a lich)
>>
This is a great setting OP.

I'm thinking players could take home prizes/souvenirs from the performances, too.

Maybe the party bard walks out of Stardust City with John Lennon's guitar, and it functions like a Masterwork +5 Lute or something of the sort.

Somebody could write the lyrics to a song in the Wizard's spellbook, and it would function as a new high-level spell that they can cast.

Somebody's drumstick could be.. I dunno.. a sap? Or sharpened to a dagger?
