"Terrain..." You start, booming your already relatively loud voice over the tarmac. "...Depending how well you are able to use it, be your best friend or your worst enemy." You pace down the assembled Senshado team, hands folded behind your back and your Patton helmet firmly atop your head. "That is why today, Captain Nishizumi is having us play a little game..." You grin evilly.

You are the commander of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack" and you are positively thrilled at Miho's idea for this morning's practice. "...Hide and Seek." You keep grinning, an effect which is having the intended effect of slightly unnerving the rest of the team. "You and your crews will have one-half-hour to disperse your tanks around the ship's terrain."

The M3 Lee's commander raises her hand. You point at her. "Can we hide anywhere on or in the ship?" She says enthusiastically, seeming to already have an idea.

"You may hide anywhere above-deck." You say. "The point of the excercise is not to see how small a corridor you can fit your tank into, but how well you are able to use the battlefield to hide or position your tank." You pause for a moment, allowing Azusa to drop her hand disappointed. "After thirty minutes, myself and my crew will hunt you down using these:" You nod over to the single, ninety-millimeter paint round. "If you get shot, you are dead and out of the game. However, you will all have your own paint rounds and if you are able to score a hit on us will be frozen for ten minutes, allowing you to reposition as you see fit." You look at your watch. "The time is now Oh-Six-Oh-Five. We will continue training until oh-eight-thirty or until Grizzly team has killed you all."

You look over the teams. They look excited, scared, eager. Everything you want from someone about to go into (simulated) combat. "So, any questions?" You say, finally, opening up for them to form ideas among themselves.

Caesar raises her hand. She has the floor, but waits for you to call on her before asking her question. "Are we allowed to work together?"

"You mean communicate amongst each other to form complex, multi-tank ambushes that play off each other's individual strengths?" You say in a single breath.

Caesar nods. "Yes, Commander!"

You stare at her for a second, she looks a bit disappointed. "Caesar if I went the entire hour and a half only to find out you all just went to your seperate little hidey-holes to wait for it all to be over I would be angrily disappointed." You turn and address the rest of the team again. "I encourage you to work together, to work aggressively against Grizzly Team, and to find ways to use the terrain around you to take my tank out. As I have said, this excersize is not about hiding your tank, though that may be part of it- I want you to use the terrain, to hide, to attack, to defend."

Noriko raises her hand, but doesn't adhere to the democratic process as closely as Caesar. "What do we get if we win?"

You blink. "What do you mean?"

"Like, if our teams are able to knock your tank out and prevent you from killing us?" She says.

You open your mouth to say something along the lines of 'the knowledge of a job well done' but Anzu gets there first. "Any team that scores a hit on Grizzly Team's Pershing will recieve double rations for a week for each successful hit. Any team that survives to the end of the time will recieve double rations for a week." She says loudly.

You wait a few moments, seeing if anyone else has anymore questions, but Anzu's declaration of a prize has them all eager and talking amongst themselve. You begin to speak, but have a feeling they're only paying the bare minimum of attention to you. "Right then. May the tanking gods have mercy upon you- because Grizzly Team will not."

The girls head to their tanks and, one by one, roll out to find their hiding place and, hopefully, points of ambush. Meanwhile, you get your own crew together, reading your tank for the coming hunt.

As you drop into the commander's seat, the rest of your crew is already buckled in. You've still got a few minutes before you need to head out.

Its not that bad a gun for something that is focused on Infantry support. 104mm of Penetration at 500m, 94mm at 1km with APC BC ammo. That will do quite well against most opponents. the question is where is Volleyball team getting their extra crewmember? Excelsior is a 5 person tank.

The B1Bis and the less-shit nip tank were run with 3-gurl crews in the show, the EXCELSIOR can mange with 4.

The commander. Or miho. Or Russels. Via radio.

"So Roy..." You say, taking advantage of the relative quiet before Richard starts the engines to get some answers. "Why were you up late last night?" You ask innocently.

"I told you earlier. Homework." He says, clearly a bit annoyed at this point.

"What kind of homework?" You ask letting him stew for a few more seconds. You're actually enjoying it a bit at this point- Roy has a secret and you're going to weasel it out of him- it's your duty as his friend and commander to know every detail of his personal life and mock him about it mercilessly- He'd do the same for you!

"Homework!" he says, exhasperated. "What do you care anyway?"

"Well, if something..." You pause for a second for dramatic effect. "...or someone, is keeping my loader up late, potentially affecting his performance on the battlefield, I think I should know about it."

"...No." Roy says simply. "It was homework, not some imaginary late-night rendevoux." He pauses for a moment. "Dammit, you always do this! I yawn a bit and you think I'm off boning the nearest woman like some bespecticled version of Richard. I was up late last night writing an essay for humanities."

You're not going to get any further with Roy. A different angle is needed at this point.

"Rose, who's he been chatting with?" You ask flatly.

As twins, Rose rarely missed an opportunity to get under her brother's skin. You were counting on it. She sighs, leaning back to look at you. "I don't know who, but he was definately chatting with someone..." She says. Rose was generally the mature, trustworthy member of your crew, the one most likely to abstain from pettiness. Her brother was the one exception.

"Dammit Rose- You don't know tha-" He starts before she cuts him off.

"I've heard you typing essays before, and I've heard you chatting before." She shrugs. "You don't giggle under your breath that much when you're typing an essay." She thinks for a second. "Almost definately a girl, too. He doesn't giggle for guys like that."

"How did-" Roy starts, completely on tilt at this point.

"I was five feet away behind a cloth divider. And I would've been much less willing to divulge the details of your social life if I weren't trying to fall asleep while you were typing." God bless, Rose. Seriously. You could marry her right now if it wasn't practically incest.

You grin to yourself. You grin at Roy. You grin in general.

You lean back in your commander's seat. Well, you had confirmation that Roy was talking to something. Also Roy did not want this to be public information. You could press for more, but why ruin future fun when you can draw it out? You look down at your watch- between this conversation and the other preparations it was getting pretty close to the start of the game.

"Richard, start warming us up." You say, calming down a bit as you go from joking friend to serious-face commander. "Game faces people- we've got tanks to hunt." As Black Jack rumbles to life, you start checking the electrics, moving the turret back and forth as the radio crackles to life.

"Comms up." Patrick says over the radio.

"Engine's looking good... Gas, oil temp, pressure all good." Richard calls out. "Ready to roll."

"Gun's good." Rose says. "Elevation and depression working. You feel the turret wobble back and forth a bit. "Gunner controls good."

"Ammo ready!" Roy says from his station. "Paint rounds are ready to paint some pretty pictures."

You smile, counting down as you stare at your watch. "...and Zero. Richard... Roll out!"

>Head aft and check the forests and hills.

Head to the hills. Elevation is our friend, and we outrange pretty much everything else.

Let's see if they listened about using terrain rather than just setting up some ambushes.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves, man?

"Right, take us bowward, Richard." You say, checking the map. "Looks like there's some abandoned town up near the bow..." You saw, holding the map in one hand while you stand up out of the commander's hatch. "They probably know we've got range by now- Miho's gonna have them in the urbs where their guns are just as good as ours..." You'd heard a bit about the area in question- often called Oldtown- as the population of Oorai had shrunk over the years, everyone had moved closer to the center of the ship where the, admittedly, small amount of chop was less pronounced. The buildings up there had been effectively abandoned for nearly a decade at this point.

Which made them the perfect place to practice terrain-fighting.

Richard hangs a right and it takes about ten minutes to get there- You don't know if the Japanese have a term for "Wrong side of the tracks" but you definately notice when you're in old town- it's as sudden as going from nicely kept, obviously habited buildings to several spots where buildings had clearly been demolished fairly recently, to what looked like parts of Detroit on a bad day.

Well, there wasn't as much grafiti.

>Get in fast- strike before they know we're here.
>Play cautious- they know we're coming and we don't want to fall into an ambush.
>Hang back- see if we can test their patience and let them make the first mistake.

no.
this is FAR from Detroit BJ. this might be Richman, VA however.

Going fast is not something a Pershing does well.

Unless we're dealing with Angerlfish or Hippo, everyone else will 1)miss first shot or 2)get out of ambush position.

Note also that we went for the old town, favored place of that low profiled StuG. We don't wanna go and eat some 75mms.

Metal Storm them. probing attack on their formations. once we've got a grasp of their tactics, we can start the serious operations...

Also, make a lot of noise and try to draw them out.

No man willingly stays in Detroit longer than he must. Nor any tank for that matter.

Blackjack isn't really built for fast, and I'm reasonably certain that Miho can rein the others to not come at you in a full frontal assault.

Probably a combination of bad posture and trying to appear less tall. She's the tallest girl in the entire cast at 168cm, and Japanese guys don't like tall girls for some unfathomable reason.

"Roy, get a round in the barrel." You say as your drop down a bit in your commander's hatch, buttoning up and switching to the periscope. "Richard, get us in there and be fast about it." They were already waiting for you- if you can act quickly you might hit before they're ready for you!

You feel the big Pershing accelerate slightly, moving near its top speed over the nice even pavement. While Black Jack was far from the fastest tank, it wasn't exactly slow for its size, either. And Richard's a genious with Black Jack's transmission- expertly shifting gears to maintain top speed as you roll down the rows. "Every on your scopes and keep an eye out..." You say, voice low.

As you pan your periscope to the side, you catch the barest glint of the Panzer 38(t) popping out from an alley- if you had been going a bit slower you would've had time to stop and rotate the turret for a proper shot on it, but the speed also saves you- Momo barely has time for the quick snap shot as the round goes high and paints the second story of a storefront a bright crimson.

"Target, Left rear!" You call into the headset. "Identify 38(t)!" The game is afoot!
