Sorry about the lateness. Korean BBQ can really screw your sense of time. Anyways, back to VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/BxU7VTKr

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack. While there, you also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, got a new weapon called the Buzzbomb, recruited some new squad members, and helped Isolde regain her honor by defeating the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then returned to Gallia to help the Loyalists fight the GRA and rescue Archduchess Cordelia. You also finally decided to move on from your past and start a relationship with your longtime friend and XO, Sam.

Currently, you're attending a peace conference between the Federation and Empire in an effort to protect President Harling, the leader of the Federation and an advocate for peace, from an assassination attempt. You managed to take out some of the assassins and captured one for interrogation, but there are more out there and you're not sure how many.

Also, you've found out that the assassins have switched their priorities, and are now targeting you and the other Demons first. That could be a problem.

You also have inadvertently alerted the rest of the party to the fact that something was up when one of the assassins fired his gun before you could stop him. Now that was DEFINITELY a problem.

You are left standing over the crumpled bodies of two assassins disguised as waiters, with every eye in the ballroom trained on you.

"Uh, I can totally explain this." You say.

>Tell them the truth. They're all in danger.

"Uh, nothing to see here, folks!" You say, laughing awkwardly. "Just a couple of GRA troublemakers who were planning to crash the party. Please, just forget this happened and go back to the festivities. We'll take care of things here!"

Thankfully, the bluff seems to have worked. Slowly, one by one, the party guests return to what they were doing, and the music and idle chatter begin in full swing again. Meanwhile, you and Sam pick up the two dead assassins and drag them to the room where Elizabeth and Tarin are interrogating their prisoner.

"Did you get anything out of him, yet?" You ask.

"Nothing much. I did manage to get how many of them there are." Elizabeth sighs. "Roughly a dozen, so with the four we took out and the two you brought in..."

"...there's at least six more around here." You nod. "This is going to be a long night."

"Tarin, you should go back to the party. I can handle things here." Elizabeth continues. "From the sounds of it, we're going to need every person we can get on the ground."

"That's a good idea." You nod.

"Now we just have to figure out how to take out the rest of the assassins." Sam frowns.

"Ah, Captain Sturmfuhrer, it's nice to see you again!" Harling smiles. "I assume that nasty little business with those GRA agents was dealt with?"

"It was just a couple of fanatics that wanted to stage a protest." You shrug. "You know how it is, some of them just refuse to admit defeat, even with all of the Gassenarls gone."

"Too true." Harling nods. "Ah, how rude of me, these here is Mortimer Perrault, owner of Perrault Arms and Technology, and this is Captain Pierce Hamilton, of the Osean 2nd Army."

"And this is Lieutenant Samantha Wellings, my second in command." You say, introducing Sam as well.

"Ah, the famous Jager Sturmfuhrer, the Demon of Randgriz." Hamilton nods respectfully. "I thought you would be a bit taller."

"Captain Sturmfuhrer! Such a pleasure to meet you!" Perrault shakes your hand enthusiastically "How would you like to be the fine owner of Perrault brand weaponry?"

"I personally wouldn't." Sam whispers to you. "Perrault goes for quantity over quality. Imp equipment is at least durable and hard hitting. His stuff is just... ugh."

Let's do this.

And let's NOT ask them about the negotiations or the party. There are some points where you want to be tactful and some topics you want to avoid.
>>
>>26019970
"Sorry, but we're perfectly happy with Gallian weaponry, but thank you for the offer." You politely turn down Perrault's offer.

"Hmph. Everybody always wants to buy Gallian." Perrault snorts. "The Federation is perfectly capable of making arms of equal effectiveness or better!"

"I'm sure." Sam says, not quite convinced.

"Anyways, I was wondering. Hamilton, you're a military man. What's the situation going on at the Round Table? I've been hearing a lot of things about it."

"Ah, well we're making good progress!" Hamilton says proudly, though you have a feeling he's blustering a bit. "We advance on Imperial territory every day, though we are doing it cautiously of course."

"I'm sure." You say. "I heard that casualties were rather high in that theater regardless."

"A necessary sacrifice." Hamilton sniffs. "We need to show the Empire that encroaching on Federation territory carries consequences. Serious consequences."

"It doesn't work when we end up suffering as much as they do." Harling shakes his head sadly.

"No offense to you, Mr. President, but it's that sort of weakness that allowed the Empire to overrun us in the first place." Hamilton shoots back.

"Then how do you two feel about peace? What are you looking to get out of it?" You ask innocently.

"There can be no peace between us and the Empire." Hamilton scowls. "One way or another, one will dominate the other, and I will make sure it's the Federation that comes out on top."

"I have no strong opinion either way." Perrault shrugs. "Though my profits have increased significantly due to my business field, at least as log as my customers have the ability to pay."

To be bluntly honest, part of the reason your equipment isn't really favoured too well is due to their quality. If it can be improved, you'll find much better traction among militaries. The Empire didn't overrun anything. He expected to and now he's only losing ground. Considering how bad the Round Table is in terms of casualties. I'd only expect the same for the Federation if they kept pushing. Better to make peace at an advantage than push our luck.

"Well, truth be told, peace is bad for business for mercenaries, but I only have the luxury of saying that because I haven't lost a man to date. I know each and every one of my people's names by heart, what they're like, who they love... if the war ends, I don't have to worry about writing any letters about their courage and sacrifice." You say rather sagely. "Also, you should consider this, Hamilton. The Empire didn't overrun anything. He expected to and now he's only losing ground. Considering how bad the Round Table is in terms of casualties. I'd only expect the same for the Federation if they kept pushing. Better to make peace at an advantage than push our luck."

"And Perrault? To be bluntly honest, part of the reason your equipment isn't really favoured too well is due to their quality. If it can be improved, you'll find much better traction among militaries. From a business standpoint, you'll be able to sell fewer items for the same profit. Something to consider should peace come to be."

Hamilton seems to be taken aback, somewhat, and Perrault looks like he's in some deep thought. While you probably didn't change their opinions or beliefs, you're sure your words at least reached them on some level.

"Truer words have never been spoken." Harling grins."But that's something to consider in the future. Right now we should worry about making a good impression to the Imperials."

He then raises his glass to the Emperor, who nods and raises his glass back in respect. You're not sure if the respect is genuine, or if it was just a political ploy on his part.

With the pause in the conversation, you take the opportunity to scan your surroundings.

You have become soft Jager. Forgiving Karla is one thing--it will help you to move on. But to advocate peace with the Empire? It is not about what they have done, but what they will do if nothing changes. There may be peace, but there will never be security unless the Emperor is stripped of his throne. Your fear of loss will cost you more than you realize.

In what way? letting the Japanese keep the emperor significantly reduced the resistance to surrender...
>>
>>26020816
Yes it is. But if enough pressure is put on Imperial territorial control the Dove factions within the empire will gain power, and either attempt a coup or broker a surrender deal. The important thing is making the Empire surrender on their own terms, not the federation's.

Judging from your own observation, as well as cues given by your hunter teams, you manage to tag most of the potential assassins. You can count five, that have dispersed themselves rather effectively around the party, in places that they would be concealed, but could still easily keep in line of sight of each other. They were learning.

Unfortunately, you have no idea where the sixth assassin might be. You don't see an extra waiter or anything, which feeds into your suspicion that he might be disguised as a guest or something else.

The only way to take out the five assassins was to take them out all at once. However, that meant either you or Sam would have to be pulled off protection duty. Elizabeth was still in the back room and there was no time to go all the way back to retrieve her.

Or, you could just wait for them to make a move. They were either going to have to consolidate or split up eventually if they wanted to go through with their plans.

I'd agree but I think we need to pick a smaller battle here. Like maybe actually getting pissed over Heloise flirting with Williams. You're jumping to an extreme and that won't help, it'll just make Jager seem bi-polar or something.
>>
>>26021339
/tg/ is in his head, he already is bipolar
>>
>>26021339
It's not jumping to an extreme if he's been there this entire time. One of the things I like most about this quest is watching Jager's development as a character--he's been slowly realizing that maybe lusting after revenge isn't the best way to run his life--and the pacing on it has been wonderful--but him suddenly advocating peace just seems a bit forced to me, that's all.
>>
>>26021381
Well, he's on a mission to stop an assassination and those two were the prime suspects to calling the hit. Just think of it as him finding Harling a good man and wanting to watch Hamiltion and Perrault's reaction to a well-respected and famous mercenary vouching for peace.
>>
>>26021381
I don't think he was advocating peace though. He said that Peace would be bad for business, but admitted that he would hate to lose any of his soldiers in battle, which makes sense since Sam almost died resently.

Revenge was part of his motivation for making the Demons, so it's not that out of character for him to focus on his love for the Demons once his revenge boner is gone. There's never really been a lust for war driving his mercenary ways.

Besides, the woman he cares about is one of his soldiers, and she got winged really badly only a few missions ago.
>>
>>26020879
"Okay, we're going to take these guys out." You whisper to Sam. Then you speak out loudly, "Sam, I'm going to grab some more drinks. You just wait for me, okay? Keep an eye on them for me."

"Sure!" Sam nods, going along with the ploy.

You disengage yourself from the little gathering and make your way to one of the disguised assassins. You pass by the other Demons and quietly give them the signal to take out the other assassins as well. It should be a rather simple affair, since most of them were keeping track of you, considering you were the most recognizable of the Demons.

You make eye contact with your target, and you both start moving to a more isolated section of the ballroom. You both have reasons to keep this quiet.

Remembering your mission, you go back to check up on the rest of your squad. Everybody else managed to take out their targets more or less successfully. At least nobody was alerted. However, the standout was Williams jumping in to assist Heloise with her assigned target. Apparently, he though the guy was stalking her or something, with the intention of doing "dishonorable" things to her. You decide to look for that sixth man. The ball is nearing its end, which means he's going to have to act soon or he'll lose his chance.

You and the other Demons spread out through the crowd, keeping a close eye out for anybody suspicious, which is much more difficult since you have to scrutinize the guests, too.

Tarin nudges your shoulder and points over to a figure approaching Harling and his entourage. He looks to be an unassuming man, with balding hair and a thin mustache, but he's moving with the sort of speed and determination that you suspect means he's not here to enjoy the festivities. You're still a ways away, but Sam notices the man approaching and starts moving to put herself between him and Harling.

So this is probably a given, but...

... We do NOT relax just because we've taken out 6 assassins.

First of all -- there may have been more assassins sent then these guys knew of.

Secondly -- there could be a second party entirely who wants to kill somebody, and THEIR assassins could still be around.

Thirdly -- somebody else might yet be a target for assassination. Like maybe the Emperor, or Karla or Cordelia or somebody.

Keep in mind what we were rolling for --
>Now that he's distracted by Sam's ploy, you've got a chance to close the distance.

We're rolling to sneak up on the assassin.

With a roll of a 5 versus 12, it means he notices us.

However, it doesn't necessarily link to an instant combat win for the assassin -- for instance, maybe he turns around and sees us, and then Sam hits him in the back of the head because he's distracted by us.
>>
>>26023951
I just don't want Sam to get shot. Again.

You push your way through the crowd, and you see that Sam and the assassin are still standing here, but you notice Sam's face has now gotten more anxious, with a hint of fear in them. Looking down, you see that it is rightfully so, considering the assassin has pulled out a holdout pistol and is pressing it against Sam's stomach.

"All I have to do is squeeze." The assassin scowls at her.

"All I have to do is scream." Sam retorts.

Personally, I say go for the re-roll. But I would think that this would make for a marvelous story and a delicious tragedy. Very symbolic of how rejection of the old and embracing of the new never comes without sacrifice and pain.

Jager is allowed to be with Karla only AFTER both he and Karla have been changed from what they were into what they should be. Jager will shun Karla for a while and his hate and despair will be the motivating factor for her to change as a person and become a better person and when Jager meets her again she's the person he wants to love again. Classic stuff.

That being said, burn rerolls until we get this right. We're SAVING Sam!

Alek gets plus 2 to his roll, half of Elsa's ACC, and the use of her perks, which are patient hunter(+1 when stealthed) and hunter's mark(extra damage to specialists/officers, not sure if it applies).

So that's like 8-9 ACC and a plus 3 to his roll.

at this point, talking him down or trying to get close is just going to agitate him and put sam in more danger, slowly allow him to think he has control, let him start to leave, then when he thinks his getaway is clean, Alek blows his head off

I mean, seriously, this is pretty much the first thing in HRT training, let them think they have control, and manipulate them to a position you can take them down
>>
>>26024801
I guess I used the wrong words because that was pretty much what I meant. Say and do everything we can to make the guy feel like he can afford to relax.
>>
>>26024383
I don't agree at all. We spent a long time building up Jager's character into this, just got through telling Karla we moved on, and we're about to enter the final act of the story. Basically Sam's death is kind of bad because:

A) It invalidates most of Jager's character development up to this point
B) We don't have the time or the circumstances to make this into that story you suggested as we only have one act left.
C) The third act would suffer greatly since it won't be a culmination of Jager's development up until then but rather a big derail since it basically leaves Jager the same angry. vengeful guy with no real idea what to do next that he was at the beginning of the quest. It would be a very directionless final act.
>>
>>26024962
It would be rather ironic though, if the happy-go-lucky adventures with Jager quest turned out to be a tragedy all along.
>>
>>26025005
Not very much in the spirit of the source material, though.
>>
>>26025025
Not saying I want it, just saying I wouldn't hate it.
>>
>>26025005
My problem isn't so much this becoming a tragedy but rather this having a shitty final act. Think about, what should Jager do if Sam died? Kill whoever hired the assassin and become an enemy of the empire AND federation? Quit being a Merc? Just get shoved into the Round Table and see what happens? Try to get back with Karla even though we just literally shut that door behind us? Seriously, where is the ending in sight that should be there in a final act of a story? Where is a resolution that can be made in one last act?

If you want a tragedy, Sam's death should have been the climax of the story in the final act. Not right here.

He would get the revenge he wanted but only after he stopped wanting it. That's a good tragic ending if you ask me.

>good tragic ending
>only 3 acts long

not really, it would need a lot of character development on all parties fronts between act 2-4 with the climax of the tragedy in act 5 to be a "good tragic ending"

with the setup as it is, it would just be a directionless mess that ended too soon and lost all impact

His vengeance was directed at Karla, not Hamilton/Perrault or whoever set up this assassination. He would just be on another path of vengeance. He would have reset. There isn't time to go through it all again.

Fair points, I have reconsidered. Can we agree on this? Sam getting killed here would make for a great tragic turn of events, but knowing the end of the story is around the corner prevents it from being used in any meaningful way.

Pretty much my original point anyway. So yes, agreed.

Hey guys, what did I miss...? Oh shit, well this seems to be a rather bad situation.

Since I don't see Artya coming from out of the blue anytime soon, I say we should try to follow his demands while trying to stall as long as possible so we can alter the situation to our advantage.
