Things are getting tense now in VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack. While there, you also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, got a new weapon called the Buzzbomb, recruited some new squad members, and helped Isolde regain her honor by defeating the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then returned to Gallia to help the Loyalists fight the GRA and rescue Archduchess Cordelia. You also finally decided to move on from your past and start a relationship with your longtime friend and XO, Sam.

Currently, you're in the midst of a hostage situation in the middle of a peace conference. An assassin whose target was President Harling of the Federation has had his plans foiled, and in retaliation, he's taken Sam hostage in last desperate bid to complete his mission.

The ball goes on around you regardless, as you and the assassin are still keeping things on the down low. However, he's got all the advantages right now, and you're stuck on what to do.

"Back off!" The assassin hisses, his fingers tightening on his concealed holdout pistol.

"You use that and you've got nothing to take out Harling with." You point out.

"Shut up!"

You try to review your options. In the nearby window, you see a few flashes of light from one of the castle towers. Undoubtedly Alek and Elsa letting you know they're watching.

You look at Sam, and can tell she's rather anxious and scared, but the way she looks at you suggests she's got something planned.

And like a wraith, you catch glimpses of dark blue hair and a black gown flitting about the crowd, slowly edging closer to the assassin.

Thankfully, one bright side of a desperate assassin is that desperation causes them to make mistakes. One of the cardinal rules of hostage taking he had apparently forgotten was to never let the hostage know where you weapon was. The fact that he was continually poking the barrel of his gun into Sam's spine meant that she knew exactly where it was.

Meaning she knew exactly how to get out of the line of fire.

With lightning speed, Sam twists around, taking herself out of the immediate line of fire. To his credit, the assassin manages to keep proper trigger discipline and doesn't fire wildly. Merc seems to be implying that we can maintain the masquerade if we really want to. Let's not blow this. Do what we have to to cover up the wound, hug Sam close to us like a jealous lover directing her attention from another guy, putting a napkin on our wound real quick, anything. Then let's vacate quietly and calmly and beat the shit out of the fucker in private or in our own sub where we can grill him as long as we want.

Assuming he doesn't swallow a pill or anything. Might want to try to make sure that it doesn't happen.

And at that moment, you don't really give a shit about protocol or subtlety or any of that crap. This bastard just threatened Sam, and nearly took her away from you. This bastard had to pay.

Before anybody can stop you, you aim the biggest strongest punch you can right at the assassin's face. The meaty impact can be heard through the entire room, and the assassin lands on a refreshment table, sending plates of appetizers flying everywhere.

But you weren't done. Oh no, you were just beginning.

You rush up, physically pick up the assassin and slam him down on the table. It had to be oak or something equally heavy and dense, but under your fury it may as well be made of glass. The table shatters and the assassin is left in a dazed sprawl.

Finally, your blood haze fades away and you realize everybody is looking at you.

"He said some VERY unpolite things about my date." You say simply.

Harling and the Emperor had the most bemused expressions. Grandma is nearly in stitches while Cordelia is perplexed like everybody else. On your other side, you can see Sir Erik Schnee looking on, and he gives you a respectful nod.

Eventually, General Wellings and several guards rush in and drag the assassin off, and quickly usher you and Sam out of the ballroom as well.

"Hey wait, we're not done yet-"

"Yes you are." Wellings grumps. "The ball is over anyways. My men can handle it from here."

You're brought to a service room where you see Elizabeth and the prisoner, as well as the bodies of the other assassins. The prisoner is unconscious, and Wellings has several of his soldiers combing the other assassins' bodies and clothes for anything useful.

"Hey, Sam, are you all right?" You ask, taking her head.

"Y-yeah." Sam shivers, the adrenaline starting to wear off from her system. "W-why didn't anybody react to that?"

"Because it was all done by the famous Jager Sturmfuhrer, the Knight Puncher." Wellings grunts. "You probably could have punched out both Harling AND the Emperor and nobody would have batted an eye."

"I'm not sure if I like that sort of reputation or not." You frown.

"Well, at least- OH MY GOD YOU'RE BLEEDING!" Sam shrieks when she sees your shoulder.

"Oh right, that." You blink. "Probably should get that looked at."

"Honestly." Sam sighs as she tears your shirt open to check the wound.

"Okay, Elizabeth, you get anything from our prisoner?"

"Not much." Elizabeth sighs. "I managed to confirm that there were only twelve of them, so they're all accounted for. But whoever hired them was pretty careful. Stayed anonymous, provided all of the equipment, and never showed himself to them."

"Well, I guess because he's just a grunt." You shrug and point to the last assassin. "Try this guy. He seems like the ringleader."

"Assuming he's still alive." Elizabeth winces. "Somebody get some ragnaid and smelling salts."

"Wakey wakey." Elizabeth lightly slaps the unconscious assassin awake. "You up? Good. Now I'm going to ask you some questions, and you'll answer them, okay?"

"Go fhck yrshlf." The assassin slurs.

"Aw, is that any way to treat a friend?" Elizabeth cooes. "I mean, if you don't want to talk to me, I guess you could talk to Mr. Sturmfuhrer right here. I'm sure he's in an especially good mood after you threatened to kill his girlfriend."

The assassin looks over at you and you give him your best deathglare, which is mitigated a bit by the fact that Sam is still treating your shoulder wound. However, the effect is achieved and the assassin visibly gulps.

"Okay, let's start off easy." Elizabeth gives a sickly sweet smile. "What's your name?"

"L-Leon." The assassin grumbles.

"Okay, Leon, now who hired you?"

"I-I don't know."

"Now don't lie to me, Leon. I've been trained to tell when somebody's lying, and you're giving off all the signs. Tell. Me. Everything."

"I-I don't know! I only ever saw him once, and he didn't give his name!"

"Anything about him special in any way? Anything that stood out?"

"Well... he was like a machine, or something. He like, talked in this weird monotone voice or something."

"What the hell are you doing this for, Lynch?" You growl, your shoulder wound is starting to sting again as you blood heats up. "You little games nearly got me and Sam killed, so you can understand why it's taking quite a lot of my composure not to UTTERLY DESTROY you right here right now."

"Why would you hire assassins, and then hire bodyguards to thwart them? What the hell is your game here?" You continue.

"Because we are at a crossroads." Lynch said, his expression darkening. "A storm is brewing on both sides, and I needed to know where you stood on the issue of peace. Were you willing fight for it, or were you just another merc company that profits off conflict? I had to know."

"So, you basically set us up." You gape.

"I made the playing field as fair as posslible, but essentially, yes."

"People died for this, you bastard!" You yell.

"And their sacrifice will be remembered." Lynch nods. "But there are more important matters to talk about."

Your punch is lightning fast, and strikes Lynch directly in the side of the face. However, he's hardly even phased. That doesn't mean he wasn't hurt, since he had a very nasty bruise on his face now, but it was like he didn't even register the pain.

"If you're done now, I'd like to continue, now." He says simply.

"It had better be worth my time, Lynch." You say, still seething.

"Currently, the only way peace will be a viable option is if both armies are kept at a stalemate." Lynch says, as if that bruise on his cheek didn't even exist. "Because, as you have probably seen, the moment one side gains a strategic advantage, peace is pushed onto the back burner again. The men running this war have a winner take all mindset."

"And you're afraid one side is going to get such an advantage, aren't you?" You say.

"Both, actually." Lynch leans forwards. "What I am going to tell you now are highly classified AIS secrets. Half the Federation doesn't even know these. If I tell you this, there will be no turning back. Are you in or out?"

We're not trying to win a war. We're trying to maintain a stalemate so both sides will keep considering peace. If either side thinks they can keep taking territory, they won't want to negotiate a ceasefire.

If we don't stop this war, there won't be a home. The Feds and the Empire would just both invade Gallia in order to get Ragnite to fuel their war machine. And pray to the Valkyrur that the Empire doesn't get their hands on the Darcsens.

>taking us for these ridiculous rides
Are you starting to see it? The absurdity of it all? The Boss was American, The Sorrow was Russian. The U.S. and the Soviet Union were allies during World War Two, and they formed the Cobras. But after the war, they were enemies. And that was because of the Philosophers.
The Philosophers were a secret society of magnates from America, China, and the Soviet Union. They pooled their resources to finance the war against the Axis powers. The Boss explained this all to me. The moment the war was over, the three countries began squabbling over the massive funds they had amassed--the Philosophers' legacy. As the allies became enemies, the Cobras were also dismantled and recalled to their own countries. And the next time The Boss and The Sorrow saw each other...
They too were enemies. The Sorrow was probably the most important person in her life. And she had no choice but to kill him because of the whims of the Philosophers. She was too strong to show just how deep that kind of pain runs... But I know how it tears you apart. Because it happened to me as well. Because of the Philosophers' plotting, I had to kill someone close to me, just as The Boss did.
>>
>>26043204
Well it's kind of like how Gregor Eisenhorn said about the life cycle of Inquisitors.

First they are naive puritans who seek to root out all corruption from the Imperium. They then meet a problem too big to be handled purely, and they begin to make compromises. Eventually, the Inquisitor learns and fully understands the true horror of the 41st Millennium and does anything they can to stop it until a naive Puritan Inquisitor gives him a bolt shell to the back of the head.

She never defected. She joined Volgin because she was ordered to. She had her comrades fight me because she was ordered to. She died at my hands BECAUSE SHE WAS ORDERED TO.
Everything - My mission to rescue Sokolov, The Boss's so-called "defection" - it was all just a setup. The American Philosophers orchestrated the whole thing to get at Volgin's money. The Philosopher's funds were managed by Volgin's father during the war. When the war ended, the father made off with the left over money - a hundred billion dollars. Volgin inherited the only record of the accounts where the money was hidden.
The Boss' mission was to earn Volgin's trust, and deliver that record - The Philosophers' Legacy - to America. MY mission was just another ruse so that she could step in and stop me. Then Volgin screwed up their plans by firing a small nuke at Sokolov's research lab... while my support plane was inside Soviet air space. The Russian military leadership was inches away from ousting Khrushchev and starting a nuclear world war. Someone had to take the fall for the Philosophers' Ambition. They chose The Boss... and she willingly sacrificed her life and her reputation for her country.

You look back at the rest of the Demons, and they all seem initially troubled and unsure, but their expressions harden into that familiar look that lets you know that whatever path you choose, they'll follow you to the end.

"I really, really don't want to, but we're in." You say, glaring at Lynch. "After all that shit you pulled, we'd better be getting a king's ransom."

"Pull this off, and you will be set for life. I guarantee it." Lynch nods. "We may never have been on equal terms, but you are one of the most skilled small scale combined arms units I've ever seen. I can't think of anybody else that can do what I'm about to ask you to do."

"Just get on with it." You sigh.

"I was hoping you would say that." Lynch takes out two folders, labeled STONEHENGE and EXACALIBUR. From the STONEHENGE folder, he pulls out a map and several pictures.

"Eight years ago, Osean archeologists discovered a massive Valkrur complex codenamed Stonehenge. What they found were eight massive ragnite powered artillery cannons. The bore is 120cm and their estimated maximum range has them being able to reach the eastern fringes of the Empire. It's possible for them to even reach Emmeria across the Atlantic."

You're not sure how big a 120cm cannon is, but the looks on Julia and Headcase's faces seem to suggest it was not something you wanted to fuck with. Then you remembered that their tank guns, which are some of the biggest on record, were measured in millimeters.

"On the other side of the border," Lynch pulls pictures out of the other folder. "My spies report that the Imperials are up to something, codenamed EXCALIBUR. We don't know what it is, but it's eating up a serious amount of resources. We've got countless tons of fuel, steel, and other raw materials pouring into a remote section in Belka's northern mountains. Intelligence-wise, that area is a black hole to us, but we suspect it's a similar Valkrur superweapon on the scale of Stonehenge or Valkof."

You're pretending like this is some sure-fire peacemaking operation. It's not. It's an insane AIS agent's cock-and-bull plan. It might be crazy enough to work, but crazy enough to work isn't good enough when the guy is clearly willing to get his own people killed over a petty "test of trust"

I'd like to hope that the Valkyria world isn't quite as grimderp as 40k, and that we won't need to be sacrificing babies to daemons to hold off the next heretical tide...

There are things that are too far for Jager/us, but without knowing what sort of tomfoolery Lynch wants, we can't decide that. "What is with the Valkrur and superweapons?" Sam frowns. "They seem to love leaving those things everywhere."

"Well, if you believe your Archduchess Cordelia, the Valkrur were rather relentless warmongers." Lynch shrugs. "In either case, both of these weapons will put this war on a whole new level of death and destruction. Both sides think they're their ace in the holes, which means peace isn't an option as long as they exist."

"And you want us to destroy both of them, don't you?" You sigh.

"Correct."

"Damnit, Lynch." You shake your head. "I am going to fucking kill you one day."

"Perhaps, after this war is over."

>"I was hoping you would say that." Lynch takes out two folders, labeled STONEHENGE and EXACALIBUR.

We Ace Combat nao.
>Shit just got real.
>>
>>26043527
Well then let's make sure to survive this mission so we can properly screw him over.
>>

Just clear Jager's mind for the moment.

Go dance with our girl, she always wanted to be a princess.

This is big...too big. We might need help here and the bottle or Sam is not going to help here.

So please guys pick someone who has experience here,
>>
>>26043557
>>Go out with Sam. You never got to do proper ballroom things during the conference.

we should give Sam a nice dance while we can.

>>26043590
She may not be able to become a princess, but a Lady is another story.
>>
>>26043557
>Go out with Sam. You never got to do proper ballroom things during the conference.
Tonight, Samantha Wellings gets to be a nobleman's Lady.
>>
>>26043557
>find grandma, get insight

And cookies
>>
>>26043557
>Find Grandma. She might be able to get some insight.

There's a lot of negative things we can say about Lynch, but he can definitely take a punch or two.
>>
>>26043557
>Find Grandma. She might be able to get some insight.
We need some wisdom bombs, and stat
>>26043575
AMEN.There's no more way we can say no to this now that we know what it is, but fuck me if we're not getting him back for that stupid ass setup.
>>
>>26043586
Eh, both sounds good. I'll second.
>>
>>26043557
>>Go out with Sam. You never got to do proper ballroom things during the conference.
>>
>>26043557
Sam first, Grandma second. Take Sam out for a BIG night on the town. She deserves at least that much for all this bullshit. Then we snuggle and hold hands
>>
>>26043557

>>Find Grandma. She might be able to get some insight.
>>
>>26043557
>Can't deal with it.
>Sam. I want to give her a half way decent night, damnit.
>>
>>26043557

If it's possible I'd Sam > Grandma > Drinks in that order.

Otherwise
>Go out with Sam
>>
>>26043675
>>26043745

I like how we ditch sam halfway through the nite to go to grandma.
>>
>Confronted Karla
>Stopped an assassination
>Almost lost Sam. Again.
>Got shot
>Had to make a deal with a total asshole
>Has to destroy two giant superweapons now
Jager just had the roughest night of his life. Discounting the attack on his home.
>>
>>26043786
>Grandma! Grandma! Shit is going down, Granny! Get all of your Darscens together-- It's time they get revenge on all of this Valkyr bullshit, one undone screw at a time!
>>
>>26043786
Lynch said he'd contact us "when preparations were ready". I was working on the guess that this would be at least a day or two
>>
>>26043590
I know, that Sam and Jaeger had a tough night but we need wisdom or anything. This is a serious situation, and we need all the edges we can get.

We can cuddle with Sam after but right now we need to prepare as much as we can, or else we risk losing her again/
>>
>>26043922
I thought he wanted to get his mind off the subject for a time
>>
So anyone else kind of not really feeling the merc business after this night? I really want the Demons to stay together some way but I don't want to keeping risking lives here.
>>
>>26043993
>You... you need something to take your mind off this.
Yep...
>>
>>26044030
I don't know the state of the Sturmfuhrer estate's finances, but I doubt we could hire them all as retainers...plus, I suspect quite a few would get bored and leave.
>>
>>26044035
Shit, smoke em if you got em!
>>
>>26044035
And all of the options provide that.

Grandma can tell us what we need to hear
Sam is who we need to see
And getting shitfaced with our men is what we need to do

So I'm good with any of them.

You decide to go off to find Grandma for now. She should know how to handle this. Or at least make you feel better. You see her slowly making her way to her car, and you manage to head her off.

"Ah, Jager, you look DREADFUL." Grandma observes. "Did that asshole Lynch rope you into some sort of suicidal mission for the good of Europa?"

"W-wait, you know Lynch?" You gasp.

"Jager, when you're around as long as I am, you get to know quite a few people." Grandma grins. "He's certainly nothing like his father. He was such a charming fellow."

You're not sure you're comfortable with where this conversation is going. "Um, can we get back to Lynch?"

"Oh, let me worry about Lynch. I know a thing or two about espionage." Grandma smiles evilly. "You should worry about not dying horribly. I want to see some great-grandchildren before I die, you know!"

"Y-yes, Grandma." You say meekly.

"Speaking of great-grandchildren," Grandma smiles. "Where's Samantha? You should be spending the night with rather than an old hag like! Go! Shoo!"

You walk back to the castle entrance. Pretty much all of the guests have left, and most the Demons have, too. As far as you know, it's just you and Sam in this empty courtyard. Sam is still in her dress, and is sitting on the stairs looking incredibly tired.

"Rough night?" You ask as you slump down beside her.

"Like you won't believe." Sam sighs rests her head on your shoulder. "I really wanted to enjoy the ball too, you know!"

"Well, actually," You smile. "It's not too late."

"Huh?"

You stand up and offer hand to her. "Would you care for a dance, Sam?"

"W-well..." Sam looks away, blushing. "I d-don't really know how to dance..."

"Don't worry, I'll lead." You laugh and pull her up to her feet.

And in the cold night air, under the soft moonlight, the two of you dance to a silent tune. The world seems to stop around you and before you know it, both you and Sam are completely lost in the moment.

Welp. Time for a side chapter next time, then? I think I need a break before we go full superweapon hunt. How many of our old pals can we bring in for this?

Oh shit.

IS LYNCH RELATED BY BLOOD?
>>
Thanks for running Merc, wild ride as always. Nice tease there too.
>>
>>26044159
....this is early. I was expecting it to end at about 5am central.
>>
>>26044233

That one crazy conclusion to jump to just because grandma got around back in the day.
>>
>>26044246
It's also a Monday... was a Monday when he started.
>>
Thanks for the thread, MC. Today was a much more wilder ride than usual thanks to the dice gods conspiring against us, but the tension really made it great in the end. See ya Wednesday.
>>
What would have happened if we did walk out on lynch? Would we have gotten the quest some other way? Or would we be doing something unrelated?
>>
>>26044135
>"Oh, let me worry about Lynch. I know a thing or two about espionage." Grandma smiles evilly.
You scare me sometimes, Granny.

All of my D'AAAAAAAAW!
>>
>>26044246
Yeah, well, this seemed like a natural point to stop.

I ran on monday because I wanted to wrap up the ballroom arc.

WHICH REMINDS ME. You guys want story or side chapter this wednesday?
>>
>>26044320

Depends on the side story focus.
>>
>>26044320

I could go for a side chapter after all this. That or a low risk story.
>>
>>26044297
You probably would have found it all out the hard way.
>>
>>26044320
if side chapter is more Matt and Artya shennanigans, then that, if not, then story
>>

side story pls

KARLAAAAAAAAAAA
at the ball
>>
>>26044349
hard way being megalazers, random explosions, or ninjas in the night?
>>
Because currently all I got is either Lanseal shenanigans, or a side story centered around Elsa.
>>
>>26044320
Side chapter.
>>
>>26044379

No karla?

>>
>>26044379
Lanseal shenanigans is always fun.
>>
>>26044320
Side story sounds good for some unwinding. Also, a question. Are we ever going to meet up with some of the people from the Demon's past? Tarin, Julia, and Isolde specifically have some pretty interesting stuff that I'd like to see in the main story.

side story (lanseal)
>>
>>26044454
I thought we wanted another Engineer?
>>
>>26044555
It would be nice to have another engineer sure, but c'mon that guy was pimpin'.
>>
>>26044577
Can't argue with that.
>>
>>26044652
So, here's the question, what is Excalibur? Stonehenge is a mass of big-ass cannons, Valkof was a wave cannon, and the Hammer (from VC3) was an ICBM.

Either way, Karla's going to spill blood before she gives it up. This is her ace in the hole. This is probably why she's been playing nice for the Empire, and all the other sins she's justifying. All she needs is Excalibur and then Belka can be safe. A tragedy from start to finish, of a person who can't see the forest for the trees.
>>
>>26045286
IIRC Excalibur was a giant laser weapon.
>>
Am i the only one that finds it hilarious we burned 2 rerolls on a mock mission?

Fuck Lynch, seriously
>>
>>26046249
I'm not sure it counts as "mock" when neither team is aware its a test and both are using live ammo and aiming to kill.

But yeah, fuck him.
>>
>>26046325
Lynch is capable of doing what 2 belkan assault campaign and a village full of ragnite zombie couldn't do. Twice

He's like the fucking EX boss
