You blink down at the case she's carrying. So that's what Sayaka asked Kyoko to bring, huh? You remember seeing it in their apartment, but you never got the chance to examine it properly. And - if you'll be honest with yourself - you were tempted to surreptitiously sneak it into your inventory before walking off. Just to borrow it for a day or two.

...This again. It's one of the few things about you that you can't figure out. Whenever you see something that could be used to blow something up, shoot something to pieces or leave it in smoking, burning ruins - you get this odd compulsion to appropriate it and stash it away into the space inside your shield. You've given in to it often enough - you're positive you saw a news article about the MiGs you took during your visit to Siberia - and besides the obvious high of getting away with something you're not supposed to, you also feel the urgency to...appropriate more afterwards. Like a compulsive hoarder, hoarding for something in the future.

Some call it stealing, maybe even kleptomania. You call it frequent on-site procurement.

It's here that you ask Sayaka if you can see it.

"Huh? What for?" Sayaka blinks. "You know what this already looks like. You were here at the apartment, right?"

Yes, but she was being a bitch then, and you didn't really get a close look at it. ...You'll pull rank if you have to.

"Dammit, don't be that kind of person, Murderface." The blue-haired Eversor scowls, before looking around. "...Well, I guess it's okay. Most of the idols've gone, anyway, and Ruri-chan's not going to be out for a bit yet..." It's here that she goes down on one knee, setting the suitcase down and undoing its locks. Two clicks and the squeak of greased hinges, and it's here that you see it again, nestled in its own customized foam inset. Blueberry Cheesecake Brownie, obviously well-maintained, its parts carefully cleaned and lovingly polished to a smooth, silken gleam.

"Here we go," Sayaka grunts as she carefully lifts it out of the inset. ...It is a beast of a thing, very nearly as long as Sayaka's tall. The firing mechanism is a misnomer - someone in Santa Destroy had taken literally 90& of an AR-15 rifle, welded it onto the sheath of a huge sword, and called it a day. The trigger, the magazine, the actual frame of the rifle is left unsubtly intact, machined only to give the entire thing a consistent silhouette.

The handle itself seems to have been modified too, with a secondary trigger jutting out of its matte black carbon frame. The trigger itself is glowing a faint red - you wonder what it's for.

"This thing's crazy advanced, I don't know how they did it." Sayaka starts, with the air of a kid showing off a new toy and desperately trying to sound nonchalant. "It even has a harness that automatically shoots out and snaps onto you when you unlock it. The straps come out here, see?" She points to an innocuous-looking disc-shaped object locked to the sheath's side. "You can even set it for lefties and righties if you want, and the entire thing moves on a sliding joint so you can even have it strapped to your back." The Eversor grins at you. "Neat, huh?"

Asking for a demonstration is a bad idea. And asking to try it is just stupid.

Remember, if it's a gun or golden, sure we'll procure it, but that's a sword...gun...thing. We don't need it and it's like Sayaka and Kyouko's twisted love child. We should keep our hand's off.

"Oh, these? Yeah, first thing I noticed when they gave it to me, too." Sayaka glances down at the weapon, holding it in both hands. "Right, uh. Assuming you've got it unlocked and the safety's off, this trigger-" She points at the larger of the two, the one still attached to the rest of the rifle it was taken from. "--fires a round specially designed for this kinda thing. The combustion of that round gets forced into this tiny barrel that's set into the mouth of the sheah, here, and it punches against the sword guard here." She points to the blade's hilt, which is basically one oblong carved out of thick plate iron, machined and beveled to resemble that of a katana's but obviously not all that concerned about decoration. "The force ejects the sword out of the sheath really hard and really fast."

...And what good does that do? Shooting someone with your sword? Wouldn't you be out of a sword then?

Sayaka smirks at this. "Well of course you don't shoot your sword at someone. It's for Iai, dumbass. See?" She places the sword at her side, one finger stroking the trigger, the other just barely brushing against the haft of the handle. "You pull the triggerr, sword blasts out, you catch it and use the momentum to add to your strike. It's all a matter of positioning it so that it follows the motion of what you're planning." There's a click as she pulls the trigger, pantomiming the rest. "Understand?"

Yeah. Yeah, you get it. It seems...pretty impractical, though. And needlessly dangerous.

"Americans." Sayaka shrugs. "But yeah, I agree with you there. First time I actually used it, I drew too late and it broke my arm and shoulder. Second time I drew too early - tore my arm completely off." It's here that she grimaces slightly, as if loathe to relive the memory. "There's a timing to it, and it's pretty tricky. Managed to get it before too long, though!"

...Right. What about the second trigger?

I seem to remember one being mentioned a long time ago but not sure if that's still a thing.

I just follow decu on twitter. He retweets pretty much all the fanart and writeups that he gets.
>>
>>26068014

My theory is that there are actually 3 Homus in this timeline.

First one is the Homu of this timeline who could or could not be a Meguca. Since Coobie did not find anything on "Akemi Homura" either, someone is lying or it has to do with Malal`s Shenanigans who for some reason protected the real Akemi Homura or she has a different name.

The second one is the real Homura who is either dead, in suspension or a witch. She may or may not be related to the sarcophagus.

The third one would be us, Chiaki Matsuda who is either a copy made by one of the Officios for reasons unknown. Or by Pinky herself as part of her game after the real Homura was heavily wounded/killed.
>>
>>26068081

"Second trigger activates the blade. Some sorta high-frequency power field. Lets it cut better and quicker. Also makes it really easy to set fire on something."

Well, that's a bit cooler. How do you unlock it, then?

"Well, first you place it where you want it to be, like so, an' then you say the password--" It's here that Sayaka pauses to narrow her eyes at you. "...You're not askin' all this shit because you're gonna steal it, right? Because I swear, Murderface, if you so much as even think about it--"

You? Steal something? How dare she. How dare she accuse her own Warmaster of such. You're not some sort of common two-bit thief with sticky fingers!

"Yeah, yeah, on-site procurement, whatever," Sayaka snaps at you. "Just leave this the fuck alone, alright? You got Kirika's Muramasa, be satisfied with that. This is mine."

Fine, fine. Now she can show you how she unlocks the damn thing.

"...Right. Well. Like I said, place it where you want it to be, hold it there, then press and hold down the second trigger." There's a faint beep, and then a mechanical chime reaching its crescendo - something charging up. "Then you say the password."

And the password is...?

Sayaka glares at you, cheeks suddenly crimsoning, before looking away. Mumbling something inaudible underneath her breath.

"ERROR." A gravelly, digitized voice suddenly speaks from a tinny speaker on the handle. "TRY AGAIN."

Well, Sayaka heard the thing. She should try again, you urge her on.

"...Jesus Christ. In front of you, even..." Sayaka blushes even harder, before glaring down at the sword, as if it'd offended her. "...Sakura Kyoko."

Two beeps, and then a series of metallic clicks clatter out as straps suddenly fly out of the device's side, pythoning around the Eversor's waist and clinching together. Another strap flinging itself up and over her shoulder, snapping across her torso and locking tight. Another click as Sayaka dry-fires the trigger - and she carefully pulls the blade out for you to see.

...Whoever designed it really had one thing in mind: making something that kills things good, but with a surgeon's laser-like precision. It had all the unflinching brutality of Kharn's chainsword, and the naked blood thirst of Kirika's Muramasa. A long flat blade of iron, burning red as if the blade was still fresh from being hammered out in a forge. The gentle curve of the impossibly-sharp edge belying just how much killing it's done, and how much killing it can still do.

A fine weapon. A sublime weapon. Maximum Hardcore.

"A bitch to maintain, though," Sayaka says offhandedly, ruining the moment. "Gotta take the sheathe apart every so often to oil the parts and clear debris and carbon scoring, stuff like that. Plus ya gotta replace the barrel every now and then, since it's not meant to contain that kind of combustion again and again and again." She takes a few swings of the sword - the red blade easily dwarfing her size - before sliding it back into its sheathe without even looking. As if she'd been using it every single day of her life.

...If she's got that kind of thing to use, why don't you see her using it more often?

"What?" Sayaka blinks up at you, the Eversor already now in the middle of putting the blade, sheathe and all, back into its suitcase where it slept. "Because it's not practical, like I told you! I mean, it's practical when I'm tryin' to use as little magic as possible, and possibly I could go on entire missions with this, but..." She looks down at the thing with a frown, before closing the suitcase on it. "...it doesn't feel the same. It's not as satisfying, I guess what I'm trying to say." It's here that she shakes her head. "Christ, why am I talking to you about this? You're a Vindicare."

Well, now. She doesn't have to be all rank-ist, or something like that. Vindicares and Eversors aren't that much different, it's just the kind of weapon that's different. She should check her privilege.

"The hell?" Sayaka narrows her eyes at the expression. "Now you're just sayin' nonsense. Come on, Ruri-chan's probably about to come out. Hopefully we'll be able to get back to the Hotel before too long." She gets back up on her feet, letting out a sigh. "Geh. I'm lookin' forward to getting some sleep, but without Kyoko..."

Jesus. You tell her to suck it up. It's just for a few days.

"Aw, shut up, what do you know?" Sayaka nudges your leg with the suitcase. "I'm not used to sleeping in an empty bed, that's all. Nothing strange, nothing perverted. Just that."

Well, she could ask her Ruri-chan to volunteer. Seeing as she'd taken a bath with her already.

"What? No, Christ." Sayaka makes a face, here, although you could tell it's a bit...forced. "I'm not into idols THAT way. Yeah, I like her music, I like her showmanship and expertise, but..." She pauses here, as if giving it some serious consideration. "Nah. I'm happy where I am. Kyoko's enough, and she's all I want."

You find yourself smirking at this, but inwardly you're relieved.

...Well? Does the carpet match the drapes, or what?

It's here that Sayaka narrows her eyes at you. "Figures that'd be the first question you'd ask, Lewdface." Her voice, dripping with pure disgust and venom, suddenly lowers as she steps beside you and whispers close to your ear. "Actually, strangest thing. She's...well, either she got some work done or she's pretty good with a razor."

...What.

"Smooth," Sayaka steps back, shaking her head. "Bare as a baby's ass. No nicks, even!"

Well. Right. That's...something you didn't need to know, you suppose.

It's a good thing you've stopped this avenue of inquiry, because--

"Chiakii! Matsuda!!" Kirishima Ruri, the hairless one in Australia, suddenly slides into the scene - back in what appears to be a completely different outfit this time, and striking some rather goofy poses as she belted out your name. Still with black as a main color, but decidedly more schoolgirl-looking, with a button-up blouse, a tie, and a pleated skirt. Less frills all around, which helps in not making you feel like you're talking to a ball-jointed doll. "Yo! My ears were burning earlier, were you two talking about Ruri-sama behind her back?" She steps up between the both of you, threading her arms through yours. "Come on, come on! What were you two talking about?"

True, she can keep her composure by acting like she's not awkward, if it involves being cold and distant, given all her training. Of course, depending on how Sayaka/Ruri reacts, there's still plenty of chance things will end up awkward as fuck in the end.

Both you and Sayaka glance at each other at the same time - and it's here that the Eversor quickly looks away, crimsoning again. "Uh, ah, we..." She begins, stammering. "Um, Ruri-chan, we weren't...we were just talking about--"

--Hair, you finish for the Blueberry, as you take the Warmaster Cap from your inventory and put it on, carefully pulling down on the sides for a perfect fit. Specifically, hair belonging to Sayaka's significant other, and how it's very...well taken care of. If Ruri gets your meaning, you add after a moment, just to make it clear without spitting the entire thing out.

"Huh? I don't..." Ruri's brow furrows, clearly confused, before realization dawns on her face a couple of awkward seconds later. "Oh. OH! And here I was thinking that Sayaka was telling you about how I'm shaved down there, hahaha!" She giggles here, hugging the both of you. "Now I really feel stupid for mishearing you! Tee hee!" She sticks out her tongue cutely, before freeing her hand from your waist to knuckle her temple. "Sorry~!"

"...Wait, you heard us?" Sayaka blinks. "B-but, I was whispering, a-and you were--"

"Trained ears! Idols have to have good hearing so we can adjust our voice to the acoustics of a concert hall and match our tone to the music, right?" Ruri lets go of the both of you briefly to tap her ears. "Ah, but then, I did catch Sayaka-chan staring a couple of times, hehen~!"

Oh, so Sayaka-chan was staring, was she? You turn to the Eversor who looks away again, sweating slightly. Adultress. NTR-ing Blueberry Seductress!

"Ah, it's not her fault, Chiaki-chan, don't stare at her like that," Ruri reaches out to poke you in the cheek with a perfectly-manicured index finger. "Sayaka-chan told me about Kyoko-chan, and it's a real shame I didn't even get to meet her! I wanted to see that eyepatch, too! Eyepatches are super hot, you know! Especially on someone with long red hair!"

...Yes. Well. You can't argue with that.

[1/2]
>>
>>26068948

"Isn't it?!" The super idol pouts, here. "Ruri-chan couldn't help but feel a bit jealous, too! But, of course," Her pout turns into a serious, grave expression, "Love between magical girls is the most fragile and most beautiful thing in the world, and I'm not going to do anything to break something like that with my own hands! I'd sooner give this all up and become a wrinkly OL with crow's feet and liver spots!"

This...this is all kinds of weird, but at least you're assured that Ruri's not going to try anything. Not yet, anyway.

There is something you'd like to ask, though.

"Hmm? What's that, Chiaki-san?"

...Does she have any tips about getting to be that kind of smooth?

"Hahaha! Well, of course I can share a few tips! Mind, it's a bit long, but the first thing you do is..."

The tip-sharing lasts, remarkably enough, the entire trip back to the Hotel. Apparently there's a lot about that kind of thing that you weren't aware of. Sayaka had a lot of questions to ask, too, something which you'll do your best not to think about when you're talking to Kyoko. It's a bit strange, though, that most of Ruri's advice seems to come from a second-hand source - as if she's not the one doing it herself.

Noriko was in the car with you as this went on, and you couldn't help but notice the young girl pressing her hands to her ears and hunkering down, completely red in the face.

In any case, the entire group gets back to the Hotel without any further incident. You waited outside with Ruri and Sayaka while Kyosuke and his goons performed a quick check of the entire building to make sure nobody snuck in while you were out - not that it wasn't guarded in the first place, anyway - and it's with relief that you finally get back into the suites. Sayaka made a beeline for her own suite that's just across the hall from Ruri's, saying that she needs to take another shower AND change into some more comfortable clothes.

[2/3]

You on the other hand escorted Ruri back into her suite, the super idol throwing herself onto the large, double king-size bed with a whumpf. Deepthroat, apparently, has her own room here, just next door, where Ruri can easily call for her.

"Haaah! Finally, bed! That was a long day!" Ruri groans, her two long pigtails spilling over the quilted cream blankets in silky streams of green. "Nnn, I wish I can just stay here forever and not worry about concerts or webcasts or interviews and stuff!" She stretches, here, much like a cat, her face scrunching up in toe-curling bliss. "Fwaah, this thing is really comfortable!"

...Not as comfortable as your chair, you resist replying, instead sticking an unlit cigarette between your lips and plopping yourself down on the couch opposite. Guard duty begins again, and you prepare yourself for a long, sleepless slog.

"...Aren't you going to get ready for bed?" Ruri asks after a moment, blinking up at you. "Shower's there, and I can lend you some silk PJs if you need 'em."

Ready for bed...? No, you're...you're supposed to be on guard duty. You're not supposed to sleep.

"No! No, that's no fun! That's why I got Kyosuke-kun and his bros to be on guard duty, so I get to have fun with you, Chiaki-chan!" Ruri sits up on the bed, pouting. "Go on, get showered and then get ready for bed!" She points towards the extravagant bath. "I'll wait here until you're done!"

...It seems that your client is asking you to sleep with her.

How do you respond?

You glare at the idol, before shaking your head. ...No. You're not getting in bed with a client. That's like the first thing they teach you in Vindicare School. Well...maybe the second. The first is to always double-tap to be sure. ...Actually, maybe the third, since the first is being taught the difference between a clip and a magazine--

"But you need to sleep! Even Magical Girls need to rest--" It's here that Ruri narrows her eyes at you, as if suddenly figuring something out - before suddenly bursting out in laughter. "O-oh, wait! Wait! Did you think I was...I was asking you to sleep with me! Like, have sex?"

...Wasn't she?

"Ahahaha! N-no, no!" The super idol bursts into laughter again, rolling around the memory foam mattress. It takes her a moment to calm down, sitting up again, still giggling. "Jeez, Chiaki-chan. I know you don't really like me, and how you think I asked for you specifically because I've got some super shady 'plans' for you--" she mimes quotation marks with her fingers at the word - "...but honestly, did you think I was going to seduce you or Sayaka-chan because I could? Because I'm rich, or because I'm a super idol?" It's here that her voice loses all of its cheerfulness, shedding it like some sort of mask or filter. Letting you hear her actual, normal voice for a change. "Did you honestly think I was that terrible of a person, Chiaki-chan?"

You're silent at this, taken aback by the sudden candor from the idol. She shakes her head here, taking a pillow from the bed and hugging it to her arms.

"You're not the first Magical Girl I hired, you know." She half-murmurs this into the pillow. "And the girl that they sent for me....she was really high-strung, just like you. Professional to the point of rudeness, just like you. She also never slept the entire time she watched over me, even if it was practically safe for her to."
[1/2]
>>
>>26069781
It's too early for most claps anyway, they should be at work now right?
>>
>>26069787

She looks down, her curiously-bright blue eyes flickering just a bit. "I woke up to find her crying about something. Turns out it's her brother, who's in the hospital. The Officio had to send someone else. I heard she was...retired a few weeks after that."

...Well, you don't exactly have a sick brother, but--

"That's not the point. Silly." Ruri cuts you off. "Look, it's...alright, I was having a bit of fun when I wrote that request to Kyuubey. Meant it to be taken the completely wrong way, and I guess I pushed it a bit today. But..." She looks at you now. "I meant what I said. I wanted to get to know Magical Girls better. You specifically, Chiaki-san. But I also meant that I wanted to have fun with you. The kind that...doesn't necessarily involve that kind of thing. I wanted you to take this opportunity to take a break, even for just a little bit. Because...you never know when you'll be able to take a break again, right?"

She pats the space on the bed beside her. "I want you to sleep here beside me. No hanky panky, maybe cuddling but that's as far as it goes. If you're not cool with that, then you can sleep on the couch." Ruri smiles at you, and you couldn't help but feel that it's a smile just for you - a genuine kind of smile. "Come on. Just go and get a shower and change, you don't even have to sleep on the same bed as me. Okay?"

Rest doesn't really come into the equation, but...you suppose you could do with a bit of shuteye. At least she clarified the situation. It was just so that you're clear with everything.

...You're not into fucking your own clients, is what you're trying to say, here.

"Right, I gotcha, Chiaki-chan! I'll try to be clearer from this point on~!"

Idol voice is back. Well...Fine, you'll take a shower. Wear the PJs if they don't look all that stupid. Sleep...well, you're still undecided on that.

It's not about being practically safe for us to sleep. The last time we fell asleep on the job Iori almost got raped.
>>
>>26069811

"Yay! Here you go!" Ruri leans over the opposite lip of the bed - giving you a strange, awkward view of her posterior - before tossing you a shrink-wrapped, folded set of light purple pajamas. Silk, too. "There you go! Feel free to use any of the toiletries there if you want!"

. . .

You shake your head as you step into the bathroom that you once washed a bloodied, traumatized Iori in.

This is the strangest op you've ever been on.

No more idol missions. No more. As long as you're alive.

You take off your glasses, cancel your transformation, and hope that you're not doing anything stupid. You stuff the hat back into your inventory, too. Just in case.

. . .

Your shower doesn't take long, despite you making sure to do all the things Mami had taught you. You even made sure to dry your hair properly with a few passes of the hair dryer, and ran a hairbrush through it for completeness' sake. Snapping a rubberband to re-engage the ponytail, you walk back out of the bathroom, already in the lavender pajamas.

...Well, it's silk, so it's comfy. A bit too comfortable, if you'll be honest. You're not really a sleepwear kind of person.

"Ahaha, that looks cute on you, Chiaki-chan!" Ruri claps. ...She's not wearing the same pajamas as you, but rather a sheer white nightgown that ends halfway at the hip. Sheer enough to be nearly transparent, revealing rather tasteful light green underwear. "There, don't you feel a bit more relaxed? How do you feel, now?"

...Relaxed, you guess. Not something you're used to, but...it's nice, you suppose.

"See? A nice shower and nice bedclothes always go a long way~" Ruri grins as she pats the bed beside her, once more. "Now, where'll you sleep? Here, or at the couch?"

Times are changing. We're obviously not as noir as we used to be. Because, unlike the readers of poir stories, the protagonists of noir stories generally don't want to be protagonists of noir stories. Because who the fuck wants to live the life of Max Payne? Shit sucks, plain and simple.

I feel like it's split right down the center between that and concluding (often with some amount of resignation or regret) that their position prevents them from seeking the creature comforts that the average person is afforded.

A dichotomy that is almost literally what this choice is about.

Not sure what's keeping us from humoring her by staying on the bed until she's asleep and then slipping out and doing our goddamn job dutifully. The principal gets to feel like she's helping, and we get to feel like we're doing our due diligence on the guard duty front. We'll be awake on the couch when she wakes up, and can just tell her that we didn't want to wake her when we got up.

Just because WE'RE no fun allowed-tier doesn't mean we have to actively crush HER hopes.
>>

No, I just count votes that are obviously votes. It's not that hard to differentiate if you have nothing better to do.

Also I for one think Ruri has a point, and that maybe, just once, we can count on somebody else to be competent. Like Sayaka. You know. That person we brought with because she's competent.

>>

You stare at the expectant super idol for a moment, before...shaking your head again. Saying that you're not going to sleep at all - you just did this to humor her. That's all.

Ruri is visibly crestfallen at this. "...Why? Didn't I tell you that it's okay for you to sleep? Look, if you're that worried, just sleep on the couch. I just want you to be comfortable and be able to relax--"

You hold up a hand to stop her. You weren't finished, you explain. You do appreciate the gesture, honestly, and while you have an unreliable memory at the moment, you're pretty sure that a client being concerned for paid help is a rare thing. You understand what she's trying to do. It's her turn to understand what you're trying to do, now - and that's to do the job you've been given, properly and efficiently. You do the job in front of you, and if you're lucky, you get to go home.

She knows just as well as you do that the last time you fell asleep on the joob, something terrible very nearly happened. That was your fault, and you want to be able to show everyone relying on you - including her - that you've learned your lesson then. You appreciate her worrying about you, and you're as relaxed as you can be at the moment - hell, you don't even have a gun close at hand, now, and you usually are antsy when it comes to that.

So thanks, but no thanks. You've taken the shower, you've worn her pajamas, you've played along as much as you could. But willingly compromising her safety in the name of fun...well, she can call you the anti-fun police all she likes, but you're not going to make a mistake like that ever again. You're not going to sleep, and that's final. You'll get your sleep, but only when you're sure that it doesn't jeopardize your client's safety.

"...Iori-chan's right. You don't bow to fate easily." There's a coldness to Ruri's voice, now, but there's also an impressed smile curling her lips. "Alright, Chiaki-chan. You win. I'll go sleep on my bed, vulnerable and helpless, while the Warmaster of the Ninth watches over me."

. . .Does she really have to put things like that?

"You're the one deciding to stay awake, so you deal with it and take responsibility." Ruri sticks her tongue out at you, before reaching underneath a pillow and snapping an elastic blindfold over her eyes. "Don't think I've forgotten that you still owe me a date, Chiaki-chan. We'll have that sometime before this ends." She lies back, drawing up the covers up to her chest and then snuggling into her pillow, yawning. "Goodnight~!"

[+50 Ruri Points!]

You murmur the required reply to that, before taking your place on the couch and leaning back, there. Pulling out the holstered Golden Desert Eagle and placing it on your lap.

...For a high-energy idol, Ruri falls asleep quite easily, you note. It's only been a handful of minutes when you started waiting when you noticed her beginning to snore. A cute kind of snore, but snoring all the same.

Even idols snore, you guess. Even the super kind.

It's here that you hear a beeping sound - and realize that it's the headset you also stuffed into your inventory. You pull it out and put it on - and immediately hear Kyosuke's voice, calling for you it seems.

"...Matsuda? Miss Matsuda?"

You tone down the volume as you reply in low tones. What did he want?

"Six girls here at the lobby, Miss Matsuda. All of them have Ninth Officio Identification. ...A Vindicare Squad and the Callidus Rank Leader, or so I'm told. Miss Karasawa Enishi." A moment's pause. "Your orders on how to proceed here, Miss Matsuda?"

How do you respond?

We asked for backup. But there's already two of the top MGs on this mission. A third showing up is suspicious.
>>
>>26070686
We asked for her.
From... 109th thread I think?

>You do have a couple of things you'd like to request, if he's asking.
>"Very well. Tell me and I'll do my best to accommodate."
Right. Yes. Well. First off, you'd like to ask Kyuubey to try and scour for as much information about your client as he can. She seems to know quite a lot about you and the industry, and she's even admitted to having a relationship with one. There's also the incident two years past, when a dead body that was a dead ringer for Ruri was found in Santa Destroy, during one of her concerts. Everything he can find about the idol, basically.
>"...Well, I suppose I can have the Vanus check again. Perhaps they'll find something about that incident. As for her prior history to any agents...well, Matsuda, we do try to respect the privacy of our clients. Blackmail has stopped being one of our main revenue streams." A pregnant silence, here. "...But I'm sure we'll be able to find something. I will see to it personally."
>Right. Fine. You'd like that delivered to you via your phone as soon as possible.
>"Right. Anything else?"
>Yes. A Callidus support specialist. Someone reliable and professional, who doesn't get starstruck easily. If the Tenth is involved with the Tojo Group, then there's the possibility that a few Magical Girls will be sent your way, to mess things up and do some damage. Any other threat can easily be taken care of between you and Sayaka, but if a Callidus gets sent, then at least you'll have someone to counter it.

Green Green Magica, Chapter 1

"Midori-chan!"

Class had ended, and most of the students had already began to shuffle out of the room. Midori looked up at the cheerful hail, and quickly leaned forward, folding her arms over her notepad and resting her chin in one hand. Despite her best efforts, though, it was obvious that she was trying to hide what she was drawing. Yukiko strode down the aisle of seats toward Midori, and stopped at a respectful distance, clasping her hands demurely before her and giving the green-haired girl a gentle smile.

Midori returned it as best as she could manage, feeling as if her own expression looked stilted compared to the cute, honest smile sported by her short-haired classmate. Yukiko smiled wider in response, either oblivious to her classmate's awkwardness or just politely ignoring it.

"I was wondering, have you decided what club you're going to join? There's not much time left to sign up."

Midori glanced aside, starting to roll her pencil between her fingers. "Well.. Ah, probably the imaginary club. I don't really have time to join one in the first place."

"Oh? Why is that?" Yukiko tilted her head just a little, lips parted curiously, an expression Midori couldn't help but find endearing. She responded with an apologetic smile. "Ah, well, ya know, I've got a part time job."

"Ohh.. Really? That's too bad." The girl's disappointment was obvious, but after a few beats of awkward silence, she perked back up. "I thought for sure you'd go for the art club, or calligraphy club, or something. But, having a job is cool, too. I'm kind of jealous. My parents won't let me get one, so I never have any money for anything."

It wasn't as if Midori could spare much on anything she wanted, either, but she decided to leave that unsaid. "I guess! Ehehe.."

Yukiko craned her neck up a little, and Midori realized the inevitable question was coming. "Say, can I see what you're drawing?"

"No thanks. I mean, no.. Sorry! It's not really anythin' at all in the first place, really! M-maybe later when I do something better." Midori mumbled rather lamely, scrunching herself up over her notepad even further, even less like someone merely leaning against their desk and more like a guilty child trying to cover a mess they made. Most of her classmates had long since given up on asking her things like that, or bothering with her at all. Since Yukiko was a recent transfer student, though, Midori knew she had a chance to try and befriend her before the girl found out what a nerd she was.

A rather big nerd, as Midori was considering basing a background character in her story on Yukiko. She did like the girl, thinking her shoulder-length, playful-looking orange hair juxtaposed cutely against such a refined personality. There were already a few sketches of her in the deeper recesses of her notebook, something she caught herself doing every now and then.

After a few beats, Midori piped up, eager to change the subject again. "S-so.. What kind of club do you think you'll join?"

"Well.. I was thinking either the board game club, or maybe the drama club. I hope I'm not the only girl if I pick the game club, though." Yukiko gave a small shrug, looking nervous at the thought.

After Midori's brief stay in the so-called "animation appreciation club" last year, she couldn't help but agree with that sentiment, even if it had eventually lead to her meeting her boyfriend. She spent a few more minutes making small talk with Yukiko, during which she packed up and they walked together, before giving an anemic wave as they parted ways at the school gate.

Unlocking her bicycle, a vintage affair with chipped blue paint, she lifted it over to face the sidewalk before hopping on, and biked the short distance to the commercial district for work.

After a rough evening in uniform (and getting chewed out by her shift manager for some perceived slight), she made the long trip home, pedaling lazily as she enjoyed the cool air of the late evening. Part-timing at WcDonald's was hardly a glamorous affair for anyone, but Midori was raised by chefs, who had a much higher standard of cuisine. Watching fries warm up under a heat lamp of all things made her feel as if little bits of her soul were burning away, like so many particles of grease. She found it far less troubling to deal with the customers, where at least she could be distracted by some vague sense of acquaintanceship. At least from the ones who weren't angry.

A little over halfway home, the city started to slowly age around her as she progressed, the buildings growing older, cracks in concrete starting to become apparent, and the average age of the clientele of the surrounding businesses sharply rising. The darkness was broken by what city lights still worked, the often-shaded windows of buildings, and the occasional neon signs, with oppressive crimson hues that seemed to give this district its name.

She made the last turn onto the street from home, passing the Deli Heal Agency on the corner - a business Midori's mother sternly warned her to never enter for any reason, not even to seek employment - and was on the street leading home. Among the many places of questionable business was a building that stood out, though in a way that was more flashy than gaudy. Its vintage, distinctly Japanese design showed a clear intent - it looked old because it was classy, as opposed to the buildings around it, which were modern once and had aged since.

It was the best-maintained building on the street (Midori knew that much, as she'd replaced some of the fixtures and filled in some of the cracks herself): Hanegawa's Ramen restaurant. The family business, and the family home.

Midori turned into the alleyway behind it and came up to the rear shed, taking a careful look around as she dismounted and pulled out her keys. She gave the unadorned keyring a practiced spin on her finger before locking her bike away and proceeding inside the building's back room, her schoolbag slung over her shoulder.

She decided it was probably too late to call her boyfriend, but it wasn't too late to score some dinner and get back to drawing, at least. She did have a new Miracle Midori outfit concept to finish, the very same piece she had been working on earlier, before Yukiko interrupted her.

Slipping off her shoes, she headed upstairs to the family living space, absently enjoying the usual sounds of dishes clinking and familiar, savory smells of restaurant-quality cooking. As she crossed the threshold of the living room, she heard a distinct noise, someone clearing their throat. She froze in mid-step, blinking as she looked at the source - her father sitting at their spartan dinner table, eyes closed and muscular arms folded. Obviously waiting for her, in a surprisingly stern manner. Hanegawa Ryoutarou.

She turned to face him fully, bringing both hands together, fidgeting a bit with the handle of her schoolbag. "Ah.. Mom's watchin' the customers, right?" she murmured, mentally berating herself for stating something completely obvious.

"Midori-chan. Sit."

Midori immediately did so. Right where she had been previously standing, in fact. Her father said nothing. After a moment, she scooted forward to actually sit at the table across from him, after realizing her mistake. Although she was fairly tall even when sitting, she barely seemed to be two-thirds of her father's own massive frame.

I hope you and others realize that instead of being a hardcore killer, we're giving off the impression that we're jumping at shadows and worse still, our own backup. This is pathetic.
>>
>>26070949
Watching his meaty arm raise (seemingly with some deliberation) as he massaged the bridge of his nose, Midori could feel herself start to sweat. She wondered what she was in trouble for now, and could only pray he hadn't discovered that box at the bottom of her closet. Or the box under her bed. Or the box in the attic. She decided that if she survived this, she was definitely going to get rid of the box in the attic.

Another moment of silence, punctuated only by the gentle ticking of the wall clock.

Helpfully, Midori piped up again. "Y-ya know, I don't mean to impose, but at this hour it really would be good for you to be downstairs with the customers.."

"Midori."

"Y-yes?"

Yet another moment passed. And then her father opened his eyes, the same shade of crimson as his daughter's as he finally met her stare. Another moment passed. "I'm sorry. Just let me say that much at first," he said, his eyes flicking away briefly before looking back at hers. "I was hoping I'd think of a really good fatherly speech to make this easier, but.. I couldn't really come up with anything." He offered a half-hearted, awkward smile.

Midori's brow furrowed with worry, as she listened to the chiseled, powerful man speak in such a defeated voice.

5/7
>>
>>26070958
He continued. "...The lenders aren't letting us off, after all. And Kai quit. Long story short, between what we owe on both the restaurant and your mom's treatments, I can't afford to hire any more help, assuming I could even get anyone else in here. And I know it's selfish, to still want us to have our cake and eat it, too, but we've put way too much work into this place, ya know? So even though I already.. Did a shameful thing, in asking you to get a job to help us out, I.. I need to ask again."

The green-haired girl's eyes widened as she saw him squeeze his closed, and she could have sworn that she saw him tearing up. Ryoutarou unfolded his arms, placing his hands on the table with a heavy thud, jarring the cup of tea set before him as he lowered his head. "For just a while, I'd like to ask you to take a break from school entirely and help out at the restaurant instead."

Seconds of silence gave way to what seemed like minutes.

Finally, Midori swallowed, the first sound from either of them in what felt like a pregnant eternity, her eyes locked upon the slicked-back hair of the man's bowed head.

She quietly accepted the proposal, of course. How could she not? She was the only daughter of the Hanegawas, after all.

Midori spent the rest of the evening laying on her bed, her outdated phone in hand as she stared at the ceiling. Despite the hour, she had texted her boyfriend, who didn't understand why she would go along with this. She had to admit Tooru was getting a bum deal, since they usually only got to see each other at school, and now they wouldn't even have that. She promised to make it up to him soon.

How she would do that, she didn't know. Maybe she'd let him go all the way, or something.

Assuming he would even still be interested.

She sighed, bringing up her phone again to check for his next reply, even though it had made no indication of an incoming text yet. The girl wished that she had Yukiko's number, even though she would have felt strange asking for it, given they were barely friends, if even that. And if she wasn't going to school anymore, they weren't going to see each other again anyway, so it was a moot point.

All she wanted to do now was close her eyes and find some peace from the dull ache in her chest, but for Hanegawa Midori, nothing came easy. Not even sleep.

K rocked her head left and right. Her neck cracked as her helmet clicked against her shoulder-pads. Gloved fingers tightened around the steering wheel. Her eyes stared at the watch wrapped around it. Three minutes past midnight. Only two left before show time.

K. The enigmatic right hand of the Seventeenth's lead Culexus. Some said she was the ghost of warmaster Brie returned from the grave. Others said she was in possession of Odette's left eye. All they knew for sure, was that she was called the Khan.

K's white suit had become a trademark of sorts. A pure white racing suit from toes to helmet underneath a white satin jacket with a golden scorpion on the back. That, and her white 1970 Dodge Challenger. The car was just as mysterious as its owner amongst the Officio. No one could figure out if she'd always had it or if it was a part of her magical girl kit - there were even rumours that it could drive itself and had a mind of its own. Some went so far as to swear they'd seen K talking with it, actually holding a conversation.

A pair of loud, booming shots rang out from inside the building. K's hand wandered to the police scanner on the dash, slowly turning the volume up.

"-possible shots fired-"

The Culexus let out a short chuckle that came out as a burst of vox-corrupted static. No matter how much he tried, the incubator could never quite manage to get the police on his payroll. Then again - she thought - if he did, she'd be out of a job.

"-approximately two minutes from location-"

K's fingers thrummed on the steering wheel. Four minutes past midnight. Any other person might have been nervous, but K was used to jackholes leaving everything to the last second. She made a deal, and a deal she would keep.

Her eyes drifted across the parking lot, still wet from the rain that had stopped just moments ago. A tall girl with long blonde hair stepped out of the building's back door first, an enormous rifle held lazily over her right shoulder. She sauntered toward the car slowly, then popped the trunk. Her eyes kept flicking back to the door nervously as she fumbled to unscrew the barrel.

K leaned over the passenger seat to open the door and flip the seat up. Her left hand tightened on the wheel as the blonde slid into the back seat. Thirty seconds.

The metal door to the building squealed open as a boyish girl with ragged black hair ran out at a full sprint. In her hands was a silver briefcase, clutched tightly to her chest. K leaned over again to flip the passenger seat back into position - just in time for the second girl to leap in and slam the car door shut behind her.

"Go, go, go!" The black-haired girl cried, trying in vain to keep her voice down.

K had already slammed on the gas by the time she reached the second 'Go'. She almost found it patronizing that her colleagues felt the need to tell her to go. As if that wasn't the entire reason she was there in the first place. K knew her job. She got a call from Holly. She told her where to be, at what time and for how long. That was it. When the timer ran out, K did what she did best; she drove.

The black-haired girl hunched over, desperate to catch her breath.

"You had me scared there for a second," the blonde said, a slight laugh decorating her words.

"I had ME scared," the other replied between breaths. "How was I, Khan?"

"Ten," the Culexus answered in monotone, her head never turning away from the road.

"Is that my score or-"

"You had ten seconds left, Fredrica," the blonde answered, speaking for the Khan.

"Shit," Freddy breathed, leaning back and placing an arm on the window sill. "The hell is this anyways?" She asked, giving the briefcase a good rattle.

"We don't ask questions, sister," Gertrude replied. "We do as we're told. Such is the way of things."

"I at least like to know who it is I'm stealing from," the black-haired Eversor grumbled, still looking the steel case over. "'s professional courtesy."

"-possible sighting on an early model white Dodge Challenger leaving the scene-"

With a single sentence from the police scanner, the car's occupants went silent. The leather of K's gloves crunched as her grip tightened around the wheel. A familiar sensation crawled up her spine. The car continued down for two more blocks before the Culexus suddenly shifted into reverse, backing the car down an alley with expert precision. The headlights went off and the car went still.

A flicker of light began to grow along the edge of the alley's mouth. The eyes of the three girls focused on it intently, none of them daring to breathe. Freddy's leg shook unconsciously as she balled up both hands in front of her mouth. The police car slowly passed, K silently praying all the while that she'd parked far enough back. As gradually as it appeared, the cruiser vanished as it passed the alley. Leather crunched as the Culexus tightened her grip on the wheel.
>>
>>26071053
Was K's wish to go fast?
>>
"-Dundas and Manning clear-"

The twins breathed a sigh of relief - only to be interrupted when K suddenly slammed the car into reverse, using only the rear-view mirror as she sped backward. As soon as the alley widened into a dimly lit back street the tires screeched as she pulled a quick one-eighty.

K always tried to keep her jobs quiet. None of that action movie bullshit where the driver seemed to try his level best to attract as much police attention as possible. She could barely bring herself to see those films as comedies. Besides, K had a sixth sense for cops. And a seventh for knowing streets. And an eighth that told her how to operate any kind of vehicle as if she'd been behind the wheel for years.

Not once did she ever want to take back her wish, despite being cursed to be an existence that made others sick by her very presence. Not once, despite never being able to see her family or friends again. Not once, even on the jobs that just made her want to tie her client to the rear bumper and drag them down the highway until it stopped being funny.

Not once.

K's Challenger wove through side streets and residential districts like needle and thread. Any police cruisers that came into sight were always one step behind, just a moment too late to see the ghost car. Deep down, the Culexus wanted to try working jobs in somewhere more dangerous, where the cops came after you with helicopters and SWAT teams at the drop of a hat. Maybe she'd take a vacation to Santa Destroy some time. Just for a little spice in her routine.

There were dozens of parking garages in Toronto; only nine were connected to the Officio's parking network. Empty garages across from office buildings where the lights never seemed to go out, but no one ever entered or left. There were always a few of those in every city, K had noticed. They were often unmarked, or belonged to an obscure company that no one had ever heard of. If they had lawns, they'd seem perpetually mowed, despite no gardener ever being seen. Most of them belonged to an Officio. K idly wondered about the select few that didn't.

It took longer, but K's route was the easiest. She didn't need speed. Just a bit of stealth and patience. Soon enough, the car rolled up in front of a run-down garage just a bit too far from any major city attractions. It had an automated toll booth. K hated them, even knowing that this one wasn't entirely automated. As she rolled down her window, the Culexus jabbed a finger at the 'Request Help' button. After a short beep, a familiar voice called out from the speaker.

"How can I help you?"

"Delivery," K muttered in reply.

Hydraulics hissed as the gate lifted, allowing her entry.

"Come on through, Khan," Holly said through the speaker. "Call me as soon as you can. Got something urgent for you before you head out west."

The car bumped and bounced as it drove down into the depths of the garage. Each floor was silent and empty, an eery stillness pervading throughout. Two, three, four... Finally the Challenger rolled down to the ninth and final floor. Unlike the rest, every spot on the ninth floor was filled save one. The cars were all different though a sharp eye could tell that the license plates of each and every one ended with a one and a seven.

K rolled into the single free lot, nestled between some fancy foreign car and a pickup truck. She wondered exactly what kind of magical girl would dare drive a pickup. As if they didn't already have an image problem.

And then she remembered one who did.

>Stop having fun.
>>
The three magical girls exited as the car came to a halt. Gertrude quietly retrieved a suspiciously heavy looking guitar case from the trunk while Freddy passed the briefcase between her hands impatiently. It wasn't until they reached the elevator that they finally spoke up.

"Guess this is it, huh?" Freddy said. "Was nice seein' you again, Khan. Say hi to Harry for me when you get home."

"Likewise," Gertrude added as she pressed the elevator's button. "It was lovely working with you."

K nodded. It wasn't until after a pause that lingered just a bit too long that she replied with a simple, curt, "Thanks. I'll tell her."

The twins nodded as they stepped into the elevator. The Culexus silently returned it, not looking away until the doors hissed shut.

Now alone in the silence of the garage, K made her way to a bank of payphones. Several were out of order, one seemed to be missing its phone entirely. The Culexus picked up one and dialled a number that had slowly been engraved in her mind over countless years.

One ring.

Then two.

"Yo," came a somber, calm voice entirely unlike the Vanus that K expected.

"Molly?" The Culexus asked. She fought to keep herself from asking what the outward-eye was doing answering Holly's phone.

A long pause followed.

"Yeah, hey Khan," the other half of the Vanus team finally answered. "Sis is a bit of a mess right now. Stuff happened. I'm covering her workload."

A second pause came as K thought for a moment. She could have sworn that she was greeted by Holly coming in to the garage. Though, it may have been Molly and K simply didn't notice. Their voices sounded nearly identical at times.

"I was told there was something urgent," K said. It was more of a statement than anything else.
>>
Yeah, uh, listen," the Vanus replied, seeming as though her train of thought was a bit muddled. "I need you to run a pick up job. One body bag. Disposable car. You'll be picking up one of ours in critical condition. Girl named Mona Bernard. Need you to slip in before police catch wind of it."

K didn't say a word as Molly continued, rattling off the address and a series of simple instructions.

"We don't know what happened yet. She called in, asked for back-up then passed out. Retrieve her body and soulgem, along with any pieces. You'll be driving Sue back."

The Culexus nearly dropped the phone. It had always been her dream to try driving the fastest ride in all of the Officios. But if she was returning it, then that could only mean-

"Yeah. Odette's gone. Can you do the job?"

K's only answer was a quick "Yeah."

"Good. I've already got into the police records for the gig with the twins. The official cause of the supposed gunshots was a misheard champagne cork. Nothing more."

"But gunshots don't-"

"Doesn't matter," Molly interrupted. "Get to work, Khan."

It was nearly one in the morning by the time K pulled up in front of the Bernard mansion. Odette's armoured car silently stood guard outside the main gate like an enormous steel watchdog. K slid out of her borrowed Japanese sedan, the leather of her pants squeaking against the leather of the seats.

She couldn't help but feel dirty and wrong as she dropped down through the hatch in Sleepy Sue's turret. It was like cheating on her lover. The interior, K found, was not quite as the rumours said. It was not entirely hollow, in fact quite the contrary. It was cramped and claustrophobic, with all of the parts one would expect from the Puma.

K squirmed into the driver's seat with no small amount of difficulty, then took a deep breath as she rested her hands on the steering wheel. That familiar sensation wormed its way into her brain. The feeling of suddenly knowing something that she hadn't mere moments ago. She knew exactly how the vehicle worked and how to push it to peak performance.

The white-suited Culexus took the opportunity to drive a few laps in front of the gate, revelling in the feeling of achieving one of her biggest dreams. Under her helmet, she wore a grin not unlike that of a child taking the bike they got for Christmas out for its first ride. Finally deciding she'd had enough, K lined it up with the gate and just the right angle, then slammed on the gas.

Tires screeched as the armoured car flew forward. It smashed through the wrought iron with a percussive cacophony of clanging and banging. If the neighbours weren't already calling the police, K figured they would be now.

The trip up the drive took far longer than K had expected. The path wound through trees and bushes while Sue rumbled over cobblestones.

K simply stared as she pulled up in front of the mansion. The entire south side of the building was pock-marked with holes of splintered wood and plaster. Parts of it looked as though the house was barely holding itself up.

A rubber-handled claw hammer materialized in her hand as she stepped up the front door, a black body bag hefted over one shoulder. The first swing only managed to dent the door knobs. Wood splintered and caved on the second. On the third, the knobs were smashed in, allowing K to kick down the door.

The entrance hall was even more of a mess than the rest of the house. Smears and pools of still drying blood added to the rest of the scattered debris.

She needed only to follow the path of destruction to find the broken magical girl. Mona had managed to sit herself upright against one of the book cases, a smear of crimson marking the distance she'd dragged herself. K had to admire her tenacity. Even with a gaping hole in her side and a missing leg, she'd made it that far.

Quickly searching the girl, K found her soulgem: a swirling orb of purple in the centre of a silver rose pendant. A subdued and classy piece of jewelry. It seemed to fit Mona, from what little K could assume of her. The gem still looked clean enough to last a few more hours. It would be close, but K could get it to the incubator on time.

The Culexus laid the sack in front of the fallen girl and quietly unzipped it. She gently picked up the girl's body, stowing her away with care. It only took a moment to find the missing piece of Mona against the opposite wall. K placed it right where it should have been, had it been attached.

Mona's body was lifted in a gentle bridal carry - it was the most K could do for her. It wasn't until she was already at the doorway that she noticed the dead man slumped over what K could only assume was his work desk. If this was the Bernard home and the girl was a Bernard then that meant-

K shook her head. The deal was to retrieve the girl. Nothing more. She let out a long sigh, transformed into a drawn-out burst of static by her helmet. If only she could just wish away the world's suffering, she thought. If only things were that easy.

Despite this, she put one foot in front of the other and found herself leaving the building.

It should be noted that she was 'just a friend'. Here we're talking about the people we requested ourselves. Including a rank leader. If you're going to assume that the Tenth have cracked our internal communications, you're giving them too much credit.

Fuck, it doesn't even make any sense for them to do anything. They want Ruri to sign the contract not off her. The Tojo group is too eager to go legit not..whatever it is you're trying to hint at here.

I meant to have something out last week, but it didn't turn out so well. Tomorrow. I promise. Maybe.

Please remember that Ruri suspects they've compromised her security guards. It doesn't take cracking internal communications to just eavesdrop on a request for backup. Or just hide listening bugs everywhere. Hell, they don't even have to have a corrupt guard do anything if they've got a MG with supernatural senses. Or even half-decent spying technology - if we were near a window when we requested backup they could have heard every word we said, for an example.

Or maybe they've got a stakeout watching the Officio and noticed that a group was heading our way, and arrived a few minutes before them in the hopes of being let through security to retrieve the target before their cover is blown by the actual team arriving.

My point is there are plenty of ways for them to know.

They were willing to use physical violence to get her to sign. I wouldn't put it past them to just outright kidnap her to get her away from any protections then force her to sign before letting her go free.

What times do you run anyway? It's been so long I forgot...

Oh and I'd like to add that the Tojo Group are a FUCKING CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION that the Ninth are seriously close to outright blacklisting, and Ruri has outright said she suspects them of abusing their idols and basically selling them into sex slavery.

Usually I ran around 6-7PM EST, I think.

Just for clarification, there won't be a thread tomorrow. Just a short teaser piece to wet y'all's appetite. Right now we're aiming to restart the quest some time in August.

Yeah I saw it mentioned a thread or two ago.
