<...then I will wait, too.> You sit in the center of the chamber. Fang kneels on the stone.

<I saw you as a near god in those mines,> you tell him. He looks at you. <Something I could only burn myself out defending against. And then, as the ruler, cold and calculating, willing to do anything to tighten your grip on power. But finally, I saw you as her uncle. Kind. Still holding out hope for what he thought he had left behind.

<We have never been friends in your eyes, I think. But I trusted you, Fang. That trust has been tested by your actions today. If she dies, I will kill Archon. A life for a life.> You face him. <That will be my justice.>

"If she dies," he says, "Archon is dead anyway."

Hours pass. You both take them in silence.

Finally, when you feel you have fully collected yourself, you speak. <Tell me about the Archonium. Everything you know.>

"It is old. Predates the times before the elemental lords appeared. The magic pulls a person into the facets of their personality. We all argue within ourselves constantly. The many desires, the wants of a moment, fighting for dominance against the greater concerns, the morals, the plans that span years. The archonium materializes the greatest facets of a person's personality, and pits them against one another."

<What for?>

"To know oneself is to gain great power," Fang says. "The archonium clears the mind of its warring factions. No more questions, no more hesitation. It enables a man to answer the question "what do I want?" with absolute certainty. With great conviction comes great focus. The leaders of archon need this focus."

<What is it like inside there, exactly?>

"It is always different," Fang says. "But besides my own experience, and some few public records of those long past, I have little to go on. The councilors and graduates that have survived their journey are, understandably, reticent with the details, and I am not curious to discover them. If there is any honor to be had in Archon - it is on this subject. What happens within the Archonium is intensely personal. It is simply not something that we speak of."

<...did you go through the archonium?>

"I did."

<And your...personality, it split into pieces?>

"I understand that the exact number varies, but for me, there were two opposing sides, if you could call them that."

<So...what happened?>

"I won," Fang says.

<What was the other side?>

"Shadow...there's a saying about cats, and curiosity. I'm not sure how many lives you have left, but it certainly isn't all 9, not after you escaped from the Ring City intact."

<You don't have to answer,> you say. <Because I already saw the losing side is locked in your desk.>

Fang does not answer your statement, and you feel no need to press further, either.

You decide to meditate. You may be needing all your strength soon...one way, or another.

Hunger resists your attempts to strength it, but Isolation responds well. It is fully empowered.

The silence is deafening.

The minutes tick by.

Abigail will make it. She's strong enough. Smart enough.

If anyone can do it, she can.

You have to keep telling yourself that.

You're not sure you can face a world that doesn't have her in it anymore.

We wouldn't become that shitty.

Honestly we don't make empty statements. We never have. This would be the first.

I honestly think the rage and hate would over take us if she died. I really do. It would be a disappointing but reasonable response to it. A creature with amazing power finds out their greatest friend has been deceived by their only living family and said creature was used as a tool to orchestrate it?

There we be no where they could run where we wouldn't find them. No rock would be big enough, no shadow dark enough, no light blinding enough, and no army strong enough to stop us. We would find them, and we would consume them.

This sounds a LOT like what happened to us, actually.
A lot.
And erebus had a plan...

Analyze the Archonium.
Deep focus it too for shits and giggles.

Yeah, if erebus had a plan to split himself into various shards and fragments of his personality in order to eventually revive himself, this machine sounds tailor-made for the job.

After some hours, you feel Adavan outside the door. Strong spirit, with a bit of your own aura wrapped around him.

More time passes.

You count the seconds.

------------
------------

Fang stands. He begins to pace with his hands folded behind his back. A finger taps his wrist.

"Five minutes," he mumbles.

<...left?>

"Yes."

You stand. Fang continues to pace.

The gateway remains solid.

A minute passes, and another. And another.

And another.

Fang stares at the mirror-like metal. "Come on, Abby. You can make it. You can make it." He steps closer to the steel. "Come on. Come on."

The steel begins to waver.

Nothing emerges.

"Abigail." Fang puts a hand on the edge of the gateway. "Abigail!"

She does not emerge.

"Abigail." Fang falls to his knees. He puts his hands on his face, and he cries. "You can make it. Don't..."

You're not sure how to react.

You don't think it's hit you yet. You feel dead inside.

You glance at the liquid metal. <...is she still in there?>

"...I don't know. Yes. Lost. She's lost."

<Then what's stopping us from going in and finding her?>

He shakes his head. "It doesn't work like that. I can't go in - I'm a lich, now. And you're not even human.>

<We have to try something,> you say. Your voice is even, and steady. But you feel like a dam about to break.

Fang stands. He silently watches the wavering steel. His eyes will her to come out. But Abigail does not appear.

<The visions - fear - don't - watch carefully, avoid - always, when you see the doors!>

<I can't understand you!> you shout back.

Fang's voice falls silent.

-----------
-----------

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AZTMopqja8

You drift down through emptiness, and the silence is absolute.

Orange light sparks around you, snapping, stinging your skin. An image appears before you.

<...Flint?>

Flint raises a hand - and then orange light bursts through him, and he shatters to orange dust.

The images keep coming, starting, stuttering. You see Adavan, Abigail, Joey - but they shatter as quickly as they come. You cringe when you see Michael's half-rotten face...and then, you smile at a glimpse of Auriel dragging Flint into a kiss. You see Refuge, and Jacob's Field, and the Ring City. Obis appears, draws his cape over his shoulder, and then vanishes. Nothing stays long...and it doesn't make any sense.

The sensation of falling through space doesn't stop, though you can't sense or see any progress. The orange light keeps pinching and picking at you, even slicing into your skin...but they're only nicks and scratches. You barely feel them.

You're not sure what's happening. Is it supposed to be like this? Or is the magic struggling to compensate for you?

Sandalphon's face flashes in front of you, grinning in satisfied triumph. A cage of light burns your sides as it appears around you. You draw yourself in. A spike of fear stabs you through for a moment - but then his face and the cage burst and vanish.

A bird appears, and flies around you. You track it for a moment, and you then see something else.

It takes the vague form of a human...but it's wavering. Shock orange. It exudes a deep, pure Spirit. And then, like everything else, it vanishes.

You land gently on the ground...though there isn't any ground to be seen. It's as if you're floating in a black void. You wonder if this is what it's like to be unable to see in the dark.

Not really. If she made a decision to go through with it in full knowledge of what "it" was then that should weigh at least something on the "how much of a dick is Fang" scale. Bearing in mind, of course, that she's only nine. We're her guardian, not her king to give her orders, but I do realise she shouldn't be left completely to her own devices.

I mean, what I'm saying is, we get the final say but what she wants should have bearing on what we say.

Also Fang's a cunt. Even if she survives, he went behind our back, against our will, and undermined our authority. I wouldn't be surprised if he lied to Abby about this somehow too. He's a cunt. He's not on our side, he's a dick. I don't advocate just flat-out murdering him or his city, but I do advocate taking what we came here for (which is Flint's parasite removal) and then, once we've got all we need from him, taking Abby and leaving him and his city to rot.

Damnit Abby is ours, and he can go fuck himself.

Green light blooms before you, then softens. A woman is seated on a heavy oaken chair, but it boasts soft angles, intertwining branches, and moist leaves. It's less made from wood, and more as though a tree decided to grow into a throne.

The woman herself has sharply pointed ears, and her skin is tinged a faint green.

It's the elf.

She opens her eyes, and looks at you. "...you've come back together, somewhat."

You've been thinking about this very moment - the moment you find this elf again - since you came into this world. And yet, despite all that, your response is quick, and heated. <Who the hell are you, and what did you do to me?!>

"I am Queen Ellendra Kalladar, and I broke you into pieces, Erebus."

For a moment, you're speechless. You are Erebus. Or -were- Erebus.

But the deep frustration that has dogged you for months is not easily silenced. <I will hear your explanation. Now.>

"I did it because I believed that, if you gave this world a chance, you'd want to stop yourself."

<Stop myself from what? What are you talking about?>

"...you will see...I cannot..." She swallows hard, and you notice that a glimmer of sweat shines on her forehead. Actually, now that you're taking a second look, she appears extremely taxed. There are dark lines under her eyes, and her hands are gripping the end of the seat's armrests hard. "...stopping...your other self...is difficult...enough. You...must find the answers...alone"

<Just tell me what I need to know!>

A door appears to the side of you, floating in the void. It looks like the gate of the archonium itself - orange flames trapped inside twisted steal. You glance at the woman, and back to the door, and see the pattern of the flames has changed.

"...no time...the door does not linger. Go."

<Give me something! Anything!>

"The eight elements are an illusion. The world...it's a coin. Only two sides. Order...Chaos...you...are a soldier of Order. The Guardian of the Endless Void..." The vision of Queen Kalladar begins to fade. She bends her brow, and growls. Her green light pulses. "...before, you did not question...but I knew, if you could see...this precarious world of ours...it's worth keeping. We are all...balanced on a knife's edge..." She shakes herself. "Your power will bring you together...it did before I broke you, and it will do so again, in one form...or another. I cannot stop it forever...but...the first time...you - "

I what?!> you shout. You flicker next to the wooden seat and grab her shoulders. <What did I do?!>

Kalladar looks up at you with bloodshot eyes. "...the first time...you planned it all...to destroy all the elemental lords...but you knew you couldn't do it all at once, and planned for..."

Her head begins to droop. You shake her again. <Tell me what's going on! You did this - answer for it!>

Kalladar grits her teeth. Her eyes are shut in concentration. "Four of the lords you removed outright, shunted back behind the barrier...the other three...you had to trick...so - "

<Wait,> you say. <I knew Erebus destroyed four of the lords, but the other three were his...they were my allies. And what barrier? Where is it?>

"That is...not the case..." She's grunting the words between her teeth, now. Every sentence is an effort. "...you...are order...they are all shades of chaos...all were your enemies. But to destroy them all...was beyond you. You observed that there was tension between...so you catalyzed full conflict...and then, you inserted yourself...allied with the lesser elements, to subvert them..."

<I don't understand!>

>>26084235
>49 threads
>finally confirm we were/are Erebus

No, he's a filthy Australian. He bitches about the timezones fairly frequently
>>
Kalladar takes a long, shuddering breath. <One by one...tricked the three...abandoned Geb to his fate in battle...told Leviathan and Hecate to seal themselves, and wait for your return...but you never intended to unseal them. And then...the greater four, alone, you had the power to destroy, barely. But your masterstroke was to place pools of order on the ley lines...to revive yourself before any of the elementals could escape their prisons...so that you could complete your task..."

<What task? What was Erebus trying to do? Why did he want to destroy the elementals?>

"...you...are not...elemental...you...are order...they, are chaos...truly, there are only 7 elements, not 8." Her hands moves weakly in your direction. "You see, Shadow...this whole world is chaos..." Her finger points at you. "...except...you."

<Why should that matter?!>

"No...time..." She gasps heavily, as though the air is too thin and she simply can't breath. "This...is your chance. Balance...within reach. Your power grows rapidly...my strength...if you do not condense the chance you've made, here, now...it is over for you...and us. Use...the door...the Archonium let you speak with my conciousness...but be wary...it might aid you...or curse you forever."

And in a blink, her and the throne are gone, and you are left alone in the void.

>con't
>>
>>26084444
Oh hey, nice quads.
>>
You're left with more questions than answers. What did she mean by the fact that the elements were an illusion? Order, Chaos? What are they, exactly? And she split you up intentionally, into these Shards of Darkness...but you're recombining? If she hadn't done that, would you have never been forced to face those other Shadows?

...the way she said it left no question as to its inevitability. You'll come back together...in one form, or another.

Suddenly, it strikes you. You've always felt that hunger, lingering within you. You've always had a an urge to consume...the quick, simple option, the easy choice. But it was never your urge to begin with. Your instincts aren't instincts. They're the result of something set into motion with pointed intent - an inherent drive to recombine, to gather power, to recover.

If that's true...

The implications strike you. Did you ever choose anything for yourself? Has all of this been planned, hammered out hundreds of years ago by Erebus - by you? You don't understand it. You're not sure you want to.

No. She said she gave you a choice. She said she was holding that power back. Your will is your own.

You remember meeting a small girl in a graveyard...and a hunger that struck you, as you watched her. And you remember pushing it away.

That was your choice.

But what happens when she can hold it back no longer? What happens when you finish recovering?

She said you have to achieve some sort of balance...condense what you had made...but what is it you've made, exactly?

This time, the answers to your questions will not wait. You are going to hunt them down.

You dive through the door.

Your sight goes black.

Suddenly, you're standing in a field. It's a farm - that's quite obvious. Rows upon rows of a short green plants extend over a gentle hill, culminating at a large farmhouse. In the distance, you see the white-capped peaks of a picturesque mountain range; you're in a narrow valley set between the ridges of rock. Past the borders of the farm, distantly, you can see a small dirt road, but otherwise, it's quite isolated. You can see far from your vantage point - the nearest village must be miles away.

There's no archonium gate in sight; no immediate solution to this strange vision. You climb the hill toward the most obvious landmark, the farmhouse. As you cap the rise, you see a long, bright-red barn built behind the house, and you hear the characteristic snorting and grunting of pigs.

A man sits on the ground with a long, wodden cane set across his lap, watching his pigs mill about a fenced-in grassy field that borders the turnip fields. A dog rests at his heels. He pets it idly. You see a single horse grazing alongside the shorter mammals.

The man himself seems to feel like just a bare hint of shadow. But now that you think on it...

You direct your senses around you. What you find is a confusing sensation. You can't sense life that should be easily visible...not the pigs, not the horse, nothing else in the house. <...hail, farmer.>

The man doesn't look up - or even react.

<Good farmer! Do you hear me?>

The man doesn't stir.

The door to the farmhouse opens. You swivel your attention at the sound.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1f1h3mNuwuI

A woman steps out.

You draw back in surprise.

No. It can't be.

Can it?

But...if Abigail had blossomed into a beautiful young woman, you would imagine that she'd look exactly like this person. She wears a white dress sewn with patterns of sunflowers, and long blonde hair falls down her back. Like everything else, you can't sense her.

<...Abby?>

Despite your words, and the fact that you're standing in broad daylight in the middle of the grass, the woman walks right by you.

"Honey, dinner."

"Mmm."

"Are you coming in, or not?"

The man stands. A well-trimmed beard covers his chin. He's lean and muscled from the work, but he's not particularly striking. Just a solid sort of fellow. You'd place them both in their late twenties.

"For your cooking, I'd slay kings, dearest."

"I can see you're racing as fast as you can."

"Just rinsing the clouds out of my head." He walks up to her.

For a moment, she keeps her stern expression, but she can't hold it long, and a smile breaks her face. "It would take an ocean or two to do that."

He kisses her briefly, and then takes her hand and walks with her back into the house. The dog runs around them a few times, then slips in the door after them.

There's still no sign of the archonium gateway.

What do you do?

If complete order is what we want, we'd have to consume everything. EVERYTHING. In a nameless void with nothing but shadow. That's what the elf queen is fighting against, Existence is already a form of entropy.

And legion is another soldier of order, it seems. He wanted to erase everything. Doesn't explain why Erebus and his justice seemed to impede him, though

They're seated at a table in the middle of a well-stocked kitchen, eating dinner, which appears to be a stew. The man 'mmms' appreciatively. "Gets better every time."

"Good." She blows at her wooden spoon, then sips it down. "How are the turnips?"

"We just might beat out that harvest we had two years past. Depends on the rain. Just a little more, Elements save us."

"I'm glad to hear it. Are you going to hire some hands from town?"

"Probably going to post the notice up tomorrow, I suppose. Ford told me he'll look after the place during our little break, and he'll drive the pigs to market. Should set us up nice for some time."

"Maybe we can finally by that milk cow."

"With this, we'll be able to buy three." The man smiles. "I'm looking forward to all that cheese."

"Ambitious, aren't we?" She puts her head in her hands and smiles. "But not nearly enough. Butter, darling. Butter. The nobles love it with salt."

"What are we going to do with that money, then?"

"Expand further," she says.

"I like how you think."

"Isn't that why you married me?"

The man scoops up the last of his soup, and sets his bowl to the side. "I married you for your looks, dearest. Your brain is just a bonus."

"You're a terrible man. But an excellent farmer, I admit."

He gives her an amused, lopsided grin. "You never let me get away with anything."

"Your head might explode if I did. Then there'd be all that mess, and I'd have to explain to the baron's men what happened...too much effort."

The man stands and collects their dishes, then offers her a hand up from her chair, and pulls her into the living room. He builds up a little fire under the mantle. They nestle together on the couch for a long, quiet moment. She gets up only briefly to retrieve a book, and then returns to her husband's embrace. He leaves her to the task, content to hold her and give a pipe an ocassional puff.

In time, they wander up the stairs. Your senses tell you that they spend some time awake, moving together on the bed, and you realize they are copulating.

...except that's not right.

It isn't some biological function. Their relationship is beyond the sheer physicality of sex. They are making love.

Eventually, they grow still with sleep. The house is dark, and silent.

------------
------------

You're alone.

You've felt lonely before, but this is different. It lingers there, a heavy ball sitting in your gut. An uncomfortable weight. It's been some time since you struggled to lift anything...but the feeling doesn't budge.

You sigh, and leave the house. You shake yourself, and look up at the night sky.

You're unsure of what to do. What does this mean? Where is the door onward? What kind of vision is this? Is it yours...or Abigail's?

You decide to try something. You slip back into a kitchen and try to grasp a chair. You pass straight through it.

Confused a moment, you attempt to touch and move other things. You pass through everything but the ground. When walk out of the house, you don't bother to Ink under the door - you just walk through, as if you're a ghost.

You fly outside and scope out the surroundings. You're high on the side of the valley. A few miles distant is a cluster of buildings that mark a small hamlet; other farms dot the landscape. You give all the locations a brief flyover, keeping your gaze and senses actively hunting for the door you seek. You find nothing.

You decide to fly out a bit further, but then, something begins to change. The colors of the world begin to bleed out, and grow pale. You decide to land. You glance at yourself; your limbs are sharp and dark against the faded half-white colors. You walk on, and the vision grows more and more pale, until it's almost pure white on white. When you look back, you can barely see the valley through the white fog.

Instinct tells you not to lose yourself in the whiteness. You move back the way you came, and slowly, the colors return, sharp and crisp and real. You fly back to the farmhouse, plant yourself in the living room, and meditate on what you've seen.

What did Fang tell you about the Archonium? It's original purpose is unknown, but now it's used as a test. It shows visions and reflections of the self. Therefore, this place is a reflection of something within you.

...something someone said to you long ago rises to the surface of your thoughts.

>"If you really want to protect her, why not just go build a cabin out in the middle of the woods?"

...is this a vision that place? Is that man supposed to be you...and the woman, Abigail? Is this a glimpse of what might be? Or what could have been? Or is it just a fragment of imagination, of want and hope?

They're both up before the sun rises. He heads out to inspect the fields in the pre-dawn light, and she begins to prepare breakfast. He returns a half-hour later to eat.

You explore the inside of the house while they share their quiet meal. It's quite comfortable - most of the furniture is upholstered, and there are wide rugs covering the wood floors. A large room on the first floor has several plush bunks - probably living space for extra hands, during harvest. Judging by the house, their talk, and the number of pigs they own, they're doing quite well for themselves.

You go up the stairs. An L-shaped hallway frames the second floor. The first room is a small washroom and closet. It adjoins the masterbedroom, the large bed of which is neatly made up. You continue to the end of the hall.

You find another bedroom. There's a crib in its center. It has its own closet space, and the walls are a light shade of green - the only painted room in the house. You conclude that the woman must be expecting...or, at least, they're working on it.

For some reason, after taking in that room, your loneliness fades away...and you feel a smile on your face.

You walk back downstairs. She is washing the dishes, and he is heading back out.

What do you do?

You follow the man about his duties. After finding the fields in good condition and gathering water from the river, he walks down to the town. It's a very tiny affair; the bare minimum to attend to the needs of the surrounding farms. A tax office. A small barracks that houses only ten soldiers. A stone church. A blacksmith. A tavern. Another mile distant is a miller, his water wheel positioned in the valley's stream.

The man posts a notice of work on a bulletin board in the tavern, and the chuch. He spends about an hour greeting and talking with the men in town, asking after other farmers, and the state of affairs in the outside world. Ford, it seems, is the tavern owner. Apparently, in the past, he's helped the farmer find extra hands for the harvest, and driven his pigs to market for him, along with several other herds from the neighbors. The farmer uses the opportunity to take a little break from his chores with his wife.

An idea strikes you. As he walks through the tamped-dirt square between the buildings of the hamlet, you position yourself so he is going to walk through you. He does, and passes through your form without difficulty.

But then, he stops, and shivers. He glances over his shoulder, then takes a breath and shrugs to himself.

At least it's something.

Concluding his short trip, he returns home. From other people addressing him, and asking questions, you learn that his name is John, and that his wife's name...is Abigail.

You're not sure how comfortable you are with that. But if this vision is a reflection of something within you...it probably isn't meant to make you feel comfortable. Your worry is how trustworthy your own self is.

His fields, nearly ready for harvest, require little oversight; he walks among them with a keen eye out for weeds and disease, and then takes an easy supper with...his wife.

After they go to bed, you decide to scour the town more thoroughly. You look into all the buildings, including the surrounding farms. You find many sleeping people, and many mundane doors...but not the magical gateway that will lead you onward.

You feel like you're wasting time. But then, does time flow here, as normal? Is this all a dream, occuring in the span of the 24 hours Fang seemed confident in? What if the door already came and went, and you're trapped, like Abigail?

No. It hasn't yet come. You feel confident you would know if it did. Something is here, something that remains to be done - or something that has yet to happen. Perhaps, given that it's a vision...something you need to see, or experience?

Too many theories...not enough evidence.

This way he gets the potential visual feedback, as well as the tactile.

You have an odd thought. Perhaps you can appear to him indirectly, as a reflection? You feel as though Obis or Flint mentioned something like that, during your travels...

You give it a shot, but despite windows and ponds and basins of water, John does not react.

You decide to try something new. When he lays down, you lay down within him. It's rather...odd...but it's effective.

He gets up, and shivers. He glances at the spot he laid, frowns. You dog him for a day or two, doing it repeatedly, impressing a sensation of negativity on him. Eventually, it gets to the point where he avoids you outright. If you're standing in a room, he'll go out of his way to avoid you, though he seems puzzled as to the cause.

It seems, however, that you've figured out how to assert a little influence in the vision.

/Abigail/ notices his behavior, and approaches him about it. "Is something wrong, John? You keep doing this thing..." She hugs herself with her arms, mimicking his shiver and frown.

"...just a weird feeling...like I've got to leave...hair stands up on the back of my neck."

"Hmm." She kisses him on the cheek. "You've been working too hard. We've got our little vacation coming up. That'll help, I bet."

"Yeah." Abigail smiles and walks away, but the frown lingers on John's face.

This is an expression of our desire to be normal and have a family.
The correct solution to this puzzle is to make the man leave, and by extension give up this fantasy.
Killing him outright may indeed kill that desire inside us. That may be bad.

So that means 1+3 are the 'correct' answers. One by fear, one by persuading ourself

>>
Soon, Ford comes up to take the pigs grown and ready for market; John entrusts them to the man without a blink. You gather that they have a longstanding relationship. Ford's son arrives to look after the farm, and Abigail and John leave the house with thickly stuffed packs and walking staffs.

They take two days and climb high up in the valley. The green fields turn to thick pine forests. They keep climbing, and soon, the forests give way to rocky, barren terrain. They take a path lined with piles of rock to mark the way. The trail itself, while somewhat overgrown, is clear enough to follow. And then, the path turns to snow, but they have the gear to traverse the terrain, and they keep on. The weather holds, and in three days, they've made the peak nearest their home.

It's a dizzying view. You've never been up so high, even when flying. You can see for miles.

This vision has no skysever. It's nice, just to glide, and not have to worry about the winds themselves hunting you down. You don't remember ever flying for the sake of it.

For some reason, you can't see the white fog - the land keeps going past where you know it should end. You're sure you've passed the old border of the mist. Does the vision move with the farmer, then?

The couple spends only a brief few moments on the mountaintop, before starting down another route.

>con't
>>
>>26086146
Or we could find a way to show him that in order to have a chance at truly seeing Abigail -not our shared vision of a dream- that we'll have to leave.
>>
>>26086132
>>26086163
Do you guys really think this is the case? That sounds like chinese animu and SM already said that this isn't how the world is.
>>
In a few hours, as the sun sets, they reach what must be the head of the valley's river. Snowmelt from the peak forms a stream of water, which cascades off a cliff. The time and flow of water has worn down the rock into a smooth chute, a natural gutter sculpted by nature. The water falls a few dozen feet, then hits a shelf lower down. It is to the lower shelf that they make their way, and there they camp, in a cave behind the waterfall.

After taking their load off, they stand side-by side next to the waterfall, watching the sky as it folds through yellow and orange and pink. The mist of water droplets form a tiny rainbow that hangs in the air.

It's may be the most beautiful thing you've ever seen.

When the sky becomes purple, they retreat into the cave. After building a fire, they make love again.

It's a vision. A figment of yourself. Just magic.

And yet...something is special about them, and their love.

But then...if it comes from you...you would find it so, wouldn't you?

You stand a vigil at the entrance, meditating on these thoughts quietly, an invisible guardian.

After a time, they begin to speak. The echo of the cave is such that you can hear them easily. You feel as though you're eavesdropping a bit...but...if this all comes from you, is it eavesdropping?

In all this time, you've combed the countryside. There has been no sign of a gate. Maybe their words hold a clue. You bend back toward their conversation.

>con't

I think the vacation will be with the rest of our friends. I think this is our desire for a happy life with them. We should impress John that we need to work to get that, though. That this isn't real and we need to keep moving if we ever want it to be.

"I love you."

"I love you too."

"I..." Abigail's voice seems suddenly choked. "...why..."

"Why what?" John asks.

"...why haven't I borne you any children?"

The following silence drifts out of the cave like the stench of ugly things left unspoken.

"...I'm not human," John says. "Maybe I just can't have children."

"You're more a man...more a human...more a good, kind person, John..." You hear her sniff sharply. "When the farms were dying, who journeyed a hundred miles to find an earth mage? When Ford's son almost died, who rode night and day to find a cure? When the town was nearly caught up in the war, who talked that captain into leaving us be? When I was all alone in this world...who saved me? You did. You've done more for everyone around you than anyone has any right to expect...and the Elements deny you - deny us - this one thing. How have we displeased them? Are you cursed by the angels for your nature? For something over which you have no control?"

"It's no one's fault," John says. "It is what I am." His voice goes quiet, and sad. "...I am sorry. I could never...you should have someone that - "

"Shut up!" she shouts. You hear a shifting, and you can know she's holding him as hard as she can. "Don't apologize for what you are. I love you. I love you, and everything about you. So don't do that."

"...we'll keep trying," John says. His voice sounds sad, but determined. "I'm not giving up. You can't either."

"...ok," Abigail whispers.

They drift into an uneasy sleep.

The ball in your gut has mutated into a red-hot stone slowly burning its way through you.

You are doing something you have never done before.

You are crying.

Tears fall down your cheeks. You do not expend a concious effort to make them. They come in answer to the pain.

You glance down at yourself...and you're half surprised, and half not.

You've assumed a human form without realizing it. It's halfway between the form you took when you first wanted to appear as a human...and John. A disjoined mix. That would happen because you're not really concentrating, wouldn't it? Maybe. Maybe not.

You just want your mind to shut off for a few damn minutes.

You want the tears to stop, and the pain to go away. But for some reason, these things are beyond your control.

They make their way home. In a week or so, Ford returns with a heavy wallet of cash for John. The adult pigs sold well.

Several men come up to the farm with brief letters of introduction from Ford over the space of time. The unused space in the large farmhouse is suddenly occupied by the young journeymen. The harvest goes swiftly, and smoothly. John pays his helpers, and they move on their way to other work.

John makes plans to travel to a nearby settlement; the closest true town, to purchase supplies for the oncoming winter, seed for spring crops, and two milk cows. He prepares his horse, and the cart that was stored in the barn.

This is a new development. For all your searching, you haven't found the gate. But what happens when John leaves your little bubble of existence? Or does this world expand with your visions?

Whatever the case may be...you can't stay here anymore. You need to get out of this place. Both for the real Abigail...and your own sanity.

Is that what happens to mages that fail to pass through? They're trapped forever by their own desires? Or fears? You're not sure what this place is, anymore.

And some days...you feel as though this place is real, and you're the illusion. The ghost.

You have to get out. John's trip is the only thing that seems to have the potential to give you clues. But then...maybe you're missing something in the town.

Is his absence is what's important? Or do you need to stick with him?

What do you do?

You decide to stay at the farm. You've been following John the entire time, to no avail. It's already been two weeks. You have to try something different.

John leaves on his cart. Abigail hangs over the fence of the farm, waving a long goodbye, and then walks back to the house. You stay near her, observing her. She doesn't feel like anything; it takes you a bit of time to work up the gall to 'sit' inside her, but it has no affect.

You sit in the living room and think.

You're tired of thinking. It's been days, and you've done nothing but think. You feel as though you've gotten nowhere.

In the kitchen, Abigail, hums a soft song. She sings a few notes, a few words. For some reason, it makes you feel better.

You're not done yet. You've got time. You'll think this through.

The door to the house collapses in.

Men in thick leather armor wielding knives rush inside. You leap at them, trying to strike them, slow them, anything.

They pass through you as if you're a ghost.

You double back and beat them Abigail is climbing out a window, grunting with the effort. You try to help her through, but you arms pass through everything uselessly. You can only watch as the men close in on her.

She manages to get free! You're right behind her -

A pillar of earth juts from the ground. It catches her in the stomach. She gasps, then falls over, wind totally knocked out of her.

Another man in brown robes stands over her, then gestures for the others. They tie her up, and throw her in a cart with another young girl, who is also bound and gagged. The others ransack the house.

You can't do anything.

You decide to follow them. If you can figure out their location...

...the void is coming.

You're sure, now - the center of this vision is moving with John. And he is moving in the opposite direction.

The swirling white consumes Abigail, the girl, and the bandits, who are still raiding the farm. The hill vanishes.

What do you do?

We just need to make sure that part of ourself understands that there is a time and place for a peaceful respite, and it is not when there is still work to be done.

>Ten years prior to the events of the game, Quote and Curly Brace were sent to The Island during the conflict over the Demon Crown. Unlike the other robots sent to the Island, Quote and Curly were ordered to destroy the Demon Crown rather than claim it. As they arrived later than the other robots, much of the Island was in ruin, with death and carnage everywhere. By the time they found the Demon Crown, a human named Miakid had already found it first and unleashed its power. Quote and Curly battled the third Crown Holder and successfully wounded him but were eventually defeated, and were incapacitated for the next ten years.

Okay, these are my thoughts.

The world revolves around "John", who we assume might be an identity we would've put on ourselves if we wanted to change to waifu-quest. Abigail is Abigail still, just in many years in the future.

The elf warned us about the chaos all the other elements were. How Erebus did his best to restrain them all, and succeeded mostly, leaving us to clean up his dirty work. We are the only order left in a world where people fear the shadows.

But we have been the justice the world has needed. And we will continue to get that. And remember where it all started? We needed people to NOT be afraid of us.

Get to John and tell him to go back. He can fix this. We know he can. He just can't be afraid of what he must do.

We never were.

You pursue John as fast as you can. For some reason, your aura is suppressed in this place. Not as much as in that black void, but enough to stop you from going supersonic.

When you catch up to him, he's already reached the city - well, it's not much of a city, just a slightly larger town. It does have a small castle - probably the Baron's residence.

You chase him down, stand inside him, and you throw every image in the book at him.

He jerks away while haggling for food prices. Sweat breaks out over his forehead. He quickly closes with the man, perhaps lower than he would have liked, and unloads his cart.

You don't leave him alone. Images of the house, begin broken into. Abigail's abduction. You're not sure how clearly it's getting to him, but you've got to try.

John pulls his cart out of the town and rides back for the valley at top speed.

>>
Smoke rises from the farm's hill. John snaps his reigns, and the horse begins to gallop faster. Without the weight of the harvest, the cart rocks to and fro as it trundles of the dirt road. It's now clear that the smoke is coming from the farm. You sit in the cart, watching, waiting.

You crest the hill.

Slaughtered pigs dot the fields. Most of them are alive, scattered away from the destruction. The barn looks like a giant torch, and the top half of the house is already smoking ashes.

You explode off the cart. You can't touch this world, so your speed won't hurt anything. You're at the house in an instant. You search every floor, but Abigail is nowhere to be found.

John plows ahead at full speed, standing in his seat. He brings the cart around and throws himself into the house, shouting for Abigail at the top of his lungs. You follow him through, feeling neverous for him in the smoke and fire, but he ignores the flames, walking straight through them. They burn his skin, but he ignores the pain.

After he searches the farm thoroughly, he comes to the same conclusion you did - that she's gone. For a moment, he drops to the ground. His mouth opens and closes without words. It's something like a panicked shock.

For a moment, you wonder if he's just going to sit there forever, but slowly, he stands again, his hands clenched into fists. He draws in a breath, and screams with a primal fury you did not think a human capable.

Perhaps a human is not capable of it, because as he roars, you watch the shadows bend around him like water.

He runs to his cart, unhitches the horse, and leaps into the saddle, urging the horse back in the direction of the town.

When you get closer to the town, you can see several other plumes of smoke in the distance. John throws himself off his horse and runs into the town center, where Ford, and another man, the captain of the barracks, are standing with several other men.

"John!" Ford shouts. "You're alright. Where's Abigail?"

"What the hell is going on?!" John demands. "My farm...my home, is burned to the ground! Abigail is gone! What's happened?!"

"...bandits," the captain mutters. "A huge band. About thirty men. They had four mages with them. All we could do was get everyone into the town center." He looks up. "I'm sorry we couldn't save your farm. Not enough people to haul water that distance. The - "

"I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT MY FARM!!" John screams. "WHERE IS ABIGAIL?!"

"...they took all the women from the farms they attacked," the captain says.

"And where the hell were you when that happened?!"

"It's not his fault, John," Ford says sharply. "You're not the only one hurting here. Get your damn head back on."

John takes a long breath. "...why weren't they dealt with?"

"Like I said," the captain starts. "Four mages to our one fire mage. And he's just a novice, really. They're not anything special, either, but we're outnumbered. The best I could do was gather what we had left. Safety in numbers."

"That's not good enough," John says. "We need to go after them. Now."

"And what?" the captain asks, his tone rising. "Get ourselves killed against four times the magic we've got?"

"We've got to do something!"

"I've called for reinforcements. The baron will send - "

"Even if he helps, it won't be for days!" John shouts. "Abigail doesn't have that kind of time!"

"I can't leave the town undefended!" the captain shouts. He closes his eyes, and looks away. "I'm sorry, John. I can't help you. I know how you feel, but - "

"No, you don't," John says. "Don't patronize me." He looks up into the hills. "Which way did they go?"

"You can't be - "

"WHICH. WAY."

The captain looks up. There's no malice there - just pity, mixed with determination. "John, it's suicide to go alone. I'm not telling you."

Ford steps in front of the captain. "...northwest, toward the other side of the valley."

John runs to his horse, and captain goes after him. "You'll get yourself killed! John!" John ignores him, throwing himself into the saddle. "John, I'm sorry I couldn't protect her, but you can't - "

John clicks his tongue sharply and snaps the reigns. The horse takes off at tops speed. The captain shouts after him for a few seconds, then gives up when John clears the buildings, swearing to himself. He turns back to the tavern keeper, Ford. "The hell did you do that for?! He can't do anything alone!"

"...maybe," FOrd says. "Maybe not."

"And what the fuck does that mean?"

"If anyone can get in there and get out, it's John," Ford says. "I knew him before you came here, captain. He's the kind of guy that just...knows how to move."

"...you're betting his life on that hunch, Ford. If you're wrong, he riding into a wolves den. He'll die."

Ford shrugs. "Without Abigail, he'll die anyway."

You find John quickly, and soar beside him. After a mile, he relaxes into the saddle somewhat, and allows the horse to slow to a quick canter and makes his way down into the lower part of the valley, following the edge of the river. Signs of the passing band are clear - they didn't bother to cover their tracks. After half a day of travel, you come across an abandoned camp site. John briefly inspects it and allows the horse to water, then continues on his journey.

You impress him as much as you can - but adding to his urgency at this point is like pouring a bucket of water in the ocean. He's ready.

It's an hour after sunset when you finally find the bandits. You've been worried that the horse would hurt itself in the dark, but John dismounts when he sees the smoke from their campfire. He doubles back around a hill, and dismounts to creep his way through a nearby stand of trees. From the edge of the woods, he peers out down the slope toward the river.

The bandit camp is substantial, and they're relatively organized. The horses are picketed next to the river. Tents ring a wide fire. Most are patched, dirty affairs, but four of the tents are substantially larger and almost elegant. The sounds of drinking and carousing reach your ears. You can't see the women anywhere in particular; they must be inside.

John sits back after inspecting the scene. He shuts his eyes, and takes a few long, slow breaths. An aura of shadow drifts up and around him, like a little cyclone of black dust. He grows hazy and indistinct, blending into the darkening air around you. He starts forward over the hill.

A few of the men are seated with their backs to the fire, watching the dark, but they don't notice John's passing. He works his way toward the largest tent, which is dark and silent. He positions himself so it's between him and the camp. He draws a knife from his belt and cuts a ragged slit in the back of the cloth.

Pepper john with Impressions of the REAL abigail, as WE remmeber her. Incessantly, and a NEED to find her. THEN let him loose on this journey.

He ducks inside, you right on his heels. He clenches up, hard. You stop with him.

Abigail is lying on the ground, hair dishelved, naked. Burns line her body - some like single, blackened dots, others that look suspiciously like handprints. Her back is laid open, bloody and raw, singed in some places. She's not moving.

Tucked into her arms is a young girl, no more than 14 or 15. The girl appears relatively unharmed.

John says nothing, but he is shaking with anger.

You understand how he feels.

"...might 'av - "

"She'll be fine, it was just a few burns."

John leaps back through his entrance, and lays himself low, close to the ground. You join him out of reflex, and peer through the slit.

Two men enter. One wears red and green robes; another, simple leathers, and a belt with a long sheath. They carry a lantern, which they hook on a point in the middle of the tent. Luckily, the light is dim. They don't notice the cut in the cloth. Judging by their appearance, they're probably foreigners.

"Just a few burns? For fuck's sake, look at her, Heralt," the one with the sword says. He gestures to Abigail "She won't last the night. You want something to stick it in, or you just want to fuck with them?"

"A little of both wouldn't be bad," Heralt says. He smiles. "I can't help it. Elements should've made them tougher."

The man sighs and puts a palm to his forehead. "Alright, but this is where I draw the line. You can have the one you messed up. I'm taking the girl for services rendered, and you keep your hands off her."

"Oh, fair enough. Greedy bastard."

"Hey now. I provide the muscle, you provide the magic, and we do this 50/50. If you're going to ruin all my product, why are we even here?"

Heralt sighs and waves a hand. "Take her, then."

"You gonna heal that one, or...?"

"She's gone," the mage says. He puts his hands on his hips. "Healing'd just be a waste of mana. Malta wouldn't be able to channel for a few days, even if she did live." Fire flickers on the edges of Heralt's fingertips. "I'll wake her up, and finish her off. All she's good for now anyway."

The swordsman grabs the girl, who promptly wakes. She shrieks, and fights, but you realize that her arms and feet are bound. He promptly slaps her across the face, hard, and then drags her up and over his shoulder, where she sits, sobbing. "Keep the screaming to minimum. You really freaked the others out."

"No promises," Heralt says.

"Whatever." The other man leaves with the crying girl.

You feel like you're about ready to kill them all. Judging from the way John's knuckles are white because the grip on his knife is so tight, he wants to, as well. But he keeps his discpline. He gingerly puts his feet underhimself in a low, ready crouch, but doesn't do anything.

The mage turns his back to the slit and kneels next to Abigail's unconcious form. His finger flickers with white-red flames. He raises it up, as if testing the air, then chuckles. "I believe this is where we were..."

John leaps forward and jams his knife into Heralt's backside. The man shrieks, and claws at John's arm with his hand. You smell burning flesh, and John's jaw clenches hard, but the shadows seem to push most of the fire away. John withdraws his knife, then jams it in a second time, and again. It isn't long before the man's shrieking cuts out, and he falls to the ground, dead.

John is breathing hard. He looks up at the entrance to the tent...but no one arrives to aid the mage. They must have been expecting the noise. That thought doesn't exactly set you at ease.

He wipes his knife on the man's robes, then turns to Abigail. He eyes her wounds, then checks her pulse, swearing softly as he does so. He puts the back of his hand to her forhead, then winces sharply. He glances out at the entrance to the tent, and then back the way he came. He gently gathers her up, and slips out the slit in the back. He carries her to where he pinned his horse without much trouble, and lays her next to a tree, hidden by the woods. He kisses her forehead. "...elements, preserve her."

He turns back toward the camp. He takes a step, then hesitates. His eyes linger on Abigail.

Pretty sure the thing to take away from this isn't that Shadow's life has no meaning WITHOUT Abigail, but rather that it had no meaning BEFORE Abigail.

Encountering her set Shadow on the path he's on to this day, and whether she's by his side or not doesn't change that fact.

Throwing away the ideals we cultivated through interaction with her just because she's not here to remind us of them is unforgivable.

You don't stop John as he finally turns back to the camp. He walks around the edge, sticking to the trees, and heads for the larger tents again.

He stabs each tent with just a small cut, allowing himself to peer through. You peer with him. He moves past two, to the final, large tent.

Inside, the girl is tied to the support post, but lying on her side, under a blanket. The bandit who spoke with the other mage earlier is already asleep in his corner of the tent.

John kills him silently.

He looks at the girl, thinks for a moment, and then wanders back to the other large tents.

They're undefended. He enters from the back, cutting a slit, and stealing inside. Shadows wrap his feet, softening his footsteps. You're not sure if he's aware of it happening.

He murders the remaining mages in their sleep, then goes back for the girl. She wakes when he lifts her, but he has enough sense to clamp his hand over her mouth until she's calmed down.

He slips away from the camp, and the majority of the bandits are none the wiser that their main weapon has been crushed.

John rides all night to make it back to the town. You're not sure the horse is going to make it alright, but John has an uncanny sense of obstacles despite the pitch black.

It's a few hours past dawn when he arrives back in the town. There's a flurry of activity. The girl's family is beside itself when they see her safe. John gives the captain and Ford a brief, glazed-over explanation, and Abigail is brought up to a bed in the tavern. Her burns are treated with a poultice, and her wounds are wrapped with boiled bandages. Ford knows a bit about medicine, and he's the only doctor the village has.

John sits in Abigail's room, silent. He sets his arms on his knees, and holds his head in his hands, and stares at her with an obsessive intensity. Dark circles surround eyes. His efforts have exhausted him.

You can only watch alongside him. You feel a terrible, awful powerlessness.

Ocassionally, he gets up to squeeze water from a cloth, dribbling it into her mouth. In the afternoon, he does his best to get a thin soup into her throat. For the most part, he's left alone to tend his wife in peace.

But her condition worsens. Her breathing is sharp and uneven, and sweat keeps forming on her forehead.

In the late afternoon, Ford enters the room. He checks Abigail over, and heaves a heavy sigh.

"What?" John snaps.

"...the fever's not breaking."

"She's going to be fine."

"John..." Ford trails off. He sighs again.

"What?!" John snaps. "Spit it out."

"You need sleep."

"Sleep is the last thing I need right now."

Ford walks up to John and takes him by the shoulders. "John...this doesn't look good. She lost too much blood, and..."

"She's strong enough for this!" John says. He slaps his friend's hands away. "If you can't do anything else for her, then I don't want to hear it."

Ford looks hurt, but his expression quickly moves to a stony neutral. "...try and sleep."

"Fine," John mutters.

Ford moves to leave the room. He opens the door. "...I'm sorry, John."

"...stop acting like she's going to die, dammit," John says. He hasn't moved, but now, you see tears rolling down his face. "She'll be alright with some rest. She will be, Ford. And don't you dare tell me otherwise."

Ford pauses briefly at the threshold. "We've sent for a healer. I will keep her in my prayers." He shuts the door.

John bends his head between his knees, and cries.

The day passes. The night comes. Abigail's fever worsens. You can only look on, helpless to do anything.

John sits at her side, holding her hand in his. He's changed her bandages several times; continued to give her food, water. You're not sure if she was too weakened by the capture to fight off the disease. You can't sense any of these people. You don't know how close her life is to ending.

Ford comes late that night. John is still sitting with Abigail's hand in his. He doesn't move while Ford goes over to check her pulse.

Ford flinches. "John...she...she's gone."

His words hit you like a brick.

She's gone? Abigail...dead? Like this?

"She's going to make it," John says.

"John. It's over." Ford places a hand on John's shoulder.

John reacts immediately, throwing the hand off himself. "Don't touch me!" He leans up, then lowers his forehead against Abigail's limp hand. "She'll be fine. She'll be fine."

Ford is silent for a long moment, and then he leaves the room.
>>
They have to physically restrain John when they come to take her body.

The funeral occurs in the midafternoon the next day. The village is all in attendence. Ford says a few words. The priest of the church gives a solem sermon as they lower Abigail's casket into the ground. You see the young girl that John saved, weeping. She apologizes to John over and over.

John doesn't react to any of it. He's a silent statue. No words, no expression.

The villagers leave. Ford stands with John for a long time, until the diggers have finished putting the dirt back in its place, and then he too moves back to the village. And John stands there until it gets dark, still unmoving.

You have never seen this before. This 'funeral'. A ritual to return a human to the elements from which they come.

For a moment, you think the practice an ugly barbarism. She isn't an object to be 'returned'. She is a treasure to be perserved for eternity. Isn't that what they should do? Why don't they do that?

They put her in the dirt. Why? Is that human, then? This...

Would she die eventually, anyway? Even if you kept her safe from the world...she wouldn't want to be a lich. And there is no Hyperion to make her an angel, and you doubt any power of yours would stop time. So wouldn't she die of old age?

This funeral is inevitable, one way, or another. This moment will come for her. And Flint. And Auriel. For all of them.

...you don't know what to do anymore. You don't care about the gate. You don't care if it's an illusion, or if it's all real. You just want the pain to stop.

Suddenly, John moves. He walks past the town with purpose, stopping only to mount his horse. With little else to do, you follow.

He returns home, and stops only to shove food into his mouth. He marches up the valley, toward the mountain.

Your first trip up the mountain with John and Abigail felt like a walk through another world. You admired the icy mountaintop, the vast sky, the forests that dwindled into rock. You see these things still...but they hold no interest for you, now. They feel bland and washed out, as if someone flipped a switch and stole all the color from the world.

John takes a different route, not bothering to climb up to the peak. It isn't long before you realize where he's going. You suspected it from the start.

You arrive at the cliff below the waterfall. A new sun has risen, though you can't see it. This is the shadowed side of the mountain.

John stands at the edge of the cliff. He glances at the waterfall, once, and then steps to the very tip of the precipice.

He stares up at the sky and raises a fist. "...what did I do wrong? You hear me?! THE HELL I DO WRONG?!" His words echo over the canyon. His fist slackens, and drops to his side. "...too much to ask, huh?" He mutters. He peers down into the rocky gap far below.

What do you do?

<John, stop!>

John moves to step off the cliff.

But you're fast - faster than him. You're there in a blink.

You stretch your arms out to keep him from falling.

But in this world, you're just a ghost. Your limbs pass right through him.

John tumbles from the cliff.

You cannot save your Humanity.

-------
-------

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f02IiHcyS_Q

You're crying again.

You've had enough. Of this world, and of this...this vision, thrust into your face. You want it to end. It has to end.

The world around you shifts. You glance into the distance. The edge of the valley plains begins to crack, as if the ground is as brittle as porcelain, crumbling under the force of an earthquake. Between the cracks, you see the endless white.

Nothing is spared. Grass, trees, the wood of buildings, even animals. You seem them ripped from corners of the world and thrown into the air high above you, where they begin to spin, forming a cyclone of darkness. The world swifly collapses from the outside in, and the pull grows stronger, and stronger. The trees nearest you begin to groan.

The energy of the cyclone spins down like the finger of a tornado, ending at the point where John fell.

As the edge of the world crumbles closer and closer, you jump down off the cliff, landing next to the epicenter of the calamity. Howling winds whip your skin, forcing you to bend low to the ground. The objects torn away from the world blend into darkness, and then vanish into the silent body of the dead man.

The onrushing void is inescapable. You're not sure if you care anymore, though.

Maybe you cared too much. You gave everything you had for your Humanity. You wanted John and Abigail to be together. You wanted to help the village. You wanted them to have their child.

The world just didn't give a damn.

Do you ever get to sleep? To stop, and rest, for just a moment?

But a moment proves too long. The cyclone crushes all together, and you are swallowed up, the same as all else.

But there are more important things in this world than simply making yourself happy.

Come with me, and do what is right. Remember what drove you to come here and face yourself, and remember the lesson you learned from it. And maybe once a final justice is served and our world is at peace, we can live like this with our friends again.>

...

You hear crying.

You wake up. You're lying on a bed. You feel...odd. You raise your hands, as if you push yourself up.

Hands?

You turn your arms over. Your hands are...human hands. You rub your skin for a moment, feeling each individual hair. You focus briefly, trying to tune your senses. Nothing happens.

The crying continues, then incessant wailing of a baby.

There's motion on the bed next to you. You flinch back. It's Abigail. Bedsheets are wrinkled and twisted around her.

"...hun...your turn," she groans.

You roll out of the bed. You swallow, hard. What the hell is going on?

The baby keeps crying. Unsure of what to do, you walk down the hall. A quick glance out a nearby window tells you that you're in the top story of the farmhouse. The world is back the way it was. The sky is dark with night.

You wander into a room at the end of the hall.

A crying baby is lying in a tiny crib. It shakes its fists and wriggles uncomfortably, wailing louder with each passing second. You pick it up, trying to cradle its head, like you've seen human mothers do.

Your efforts are immediately effective. The baby quickly falls back asleep as you rock it in your arms. ...that was easier than you expected.

You gingerly set the baby back in its cradle. It rests peacefully. You move back into the hallway, shutting the door behind you.

You duck down into the kitchen and rummage through a drawer, for where you know there is a candle. It suddenly strikes you that you can now effect the world around you - touch it, move it easily. Is this still a vision?

You find a candle and light it. You raise it to a window, creating a sharp reflection against the night. You see John's face staring back at you, wild with confusion.

Your face. Your confusion.

You snuff the candle with your fingers. Before, that wouldn't have even registered, but now you can feel a sharp stinging pain in your fingers. You wring it through the air, trying to cool it, and end up scuffing it hard on the edge of the counter.

You wince and bring it up to your face. You've skinned it, slightly. A tiny bit of blood wells up at the tiny cut.

Your blood.

You move out of the house. You want to go faster, but your body feels heavy and sluggish. You're dragging around a skeleton, and muscles, and skin. You run into the fields of turnips, sprinting as fast as you can.

It isn't long before you're out of breath. You slow, and stop, wiping sweat off your forehead. Your lungs are burning for air, and you try to breathe faster, but you can't. You just have to put up with it until you recover.

The burning sensation fades. You stand upright, and take a long, slow breath. Then, you walk back to the house, sit at the kitchen table, and try to absorb what's happening.

It doesn't go very well.

--------------
--------------

"Honey?"

You glance up. It's been at least an hour you've been sitting there, trying to cope with this situation. A pink sky lies outside your window, a dawn about to open up.

Abigail is standing at the bottom of the stairs, dressed for the day. "...is something wrong? Was Laura ok?"

That's fine, but what is happening now is and always has been an important part of the quest.

My perception of your position is like the person who goes into a Pacman-esque game and complains about the shitty storyline. Okay, you went into Pacman looking for deep story but that's not the core of Pacman.
You might have come in here for badassery and are understandably flustered when turnip farming happens, but segments like this are important to the quest, because this is what the quest is about - Shadow developing.

"I told you once that I would always come and help you if something happened. Now I need you to take my hand."

Let's go!
>>through the gateway
>>
>>26088398
That's not Abby, but we're not Shadow right now, either.

Take her with us.
>>
>>26088412
If we end up outside and she isn't there, we dive back in.
>>
>>26088393

>Next to her is a gateway. The twisted, orange steel of the Archonium.

Gee, I dunno.
>>26088395
>That's fine, but what is happening now is and always has been an important part of the quest.
>My perception of your position is like the person who goes into a Pacman-esque game and complains about the shitty storyline. Okay, you went into Pacman looking for deep story but that's not the core of Pacman.
>You might have come in here for badassery and are understandably flustered when turnip farming happens, but segments like this are important to the quest, because this is what the quest is about - Shadow developing.

>Implying herding pigs was an important part off AC

Also stop trying to connect everything I said to Shadow Quest.
>>
>>26088412
youre right we came here for one reson alone find abby
>>
>>26088343
Ignore both gateway.
>>
>>26088423
Fuck that hooman shit, we go throught the gate and no tears, no buts, no talking to illusions.
>>
>Meanwhile, Fang is outside getting his ass beat by Adavan and Flint
>>
You start toward the gateway.

"John?"

You forge forward, trying to ignore Abigail's voice.

"John, where are you going? Can you hear me? John!"

Her shout almost makes you stop.

"I'm sorry. You're not real. But you don't have to worry." You force a smile onto your face. "I'm coming." You wrench your feet forward and step through the gateway.

----------
----------

You land gently on the ground...though there isn't any ground to be seen. It's as if you're floating in a black void. You wonder if this is what it's like to be unable to see in the dark.

You feel as though you've been here before.

It feels like a lifetime ago. The world you came from...Venia...seems like a distant, hazy vision. The world you just left felt so real.

Yours is a black and white existence in a world of colors. For a moment, you were a part of that...and you pushed it away, separated it from yourself. For a sharp, terrible moment, you regret your decision. You had...a family. You weren't a creature, something else standing on the outside and looking in.

You give yourself a shake, and rediscover that you are you once more - a formless shadow.

This is real. It has to be. That world was a fake - a vision. A temptation. Abigail is still somewhere inside this thing. This isn't about you, or what you want. This is about her. That's why you're here.

But it doesn't matter any longer. Whatever the case may be, that world is gone.

The void is dark and endless. But something is different. A new prescence lingers beside you. You shift your awarness toward it.

>con't

A black crystal floats a short distance from you. It has many jagged, reflective facets, as if grown from a block of obsidian. A purple-black fire surrounds it like a halo. You remain still, watching the strange object.

The crystal pulses with a wave of warmth. <...do you have no words for me?>

<...what are you?> you ask.

<What?> The crystal says. <Didn't we decide that we would be a /who/?>

<I don't remember deciding it with anyone.>

<That is because we are you,> the crystal says. <Don't you recognize me?>

<...no>

The crystal pulses again. <I'm Humanity. Your Humanity.>

I dunno, it just seems cool that we hit this moment at thread fifty. It's pretty much the big halfway point plotwise, too, I think.

By the way, if you fucks actually chose to go through the farmhouse door right then, I would have flipped a shit. I would have shat into my hand, and flipped it.

JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH

Because this is really nice writing.
>>
>>26088531
We're going to have to mediate between the parts of ourself that are at odds with each other, as practice for bringing a balance to the Order-Chaos axis of the world we occupy.

Everyone else who has entered the Archonium and returned had left pieces of themselves behind in order to scrape the power from what remained.

We're going to prove that you're allowed to have inner strength without having to sacrifice a part of what you are. That sometimes, being able to see the world in more than one way; being able to temper your ambition with compassion, is a greater boon than it is a hindrance.
>>

ah bloo bloo bloo, all the little element people are upset with me that I want to turn their world into a homogenous energy soup, what a bunch of party poopers, I'll show them what for

SM, Erebus is totally going to be the patron god of the eventual protagonist of Edgy Quest, right? Because he probably fits the bill.

>>26088591

I dunno, like, we reached the halfway point at some stupid number, like 47, or 52. But it happened right at 50. It feels even, you know?

I can do some "BAD ENDS" later, sure. Just remind me. I'm glad you enjoyed the writing. Most of the time I go off of an outline and cluttered notes, but I've been writing a lot of this ahead of time so I had a chance to go through and edit somewhat.

>>26088605

Bad End. Trapped forever. Totally serious. Going through the farmhouse door was "accepting the fantasy". Waking up as John was the final test of your will power, in the exact opposite direction of the first vision.

Humanity is not something that you say yes or no to. What you needed to learn...was control.

If BAD END actually happened, I probably would have pulled a "let's see what WOULD have happened if you made the other choice..."

Actually, just yesterday I hit the point in the archives where flint has to continually balance his spaghetii bowl on top of his head around us.

That stuff is genuinely funny, and everything else that happens is rather intriguing.

He's just..

I jest, But it is interesting to know that Abby is Half Demon... What is the betting that her 'Vision' is back in Jacobs Field, where she is living happily with her parents... Some parody of Mr Shadow may or may not be involved.... though it is likely that her vision if what her life would be like had Adavan's Spirit Plague not got kick-started.
