For the third day in a row, it's me and The Children and the mountain! Please give a big hand for our main man, Gronk the Devourer!

Where we left off last night, Gronk had challenged the chiefs of the three other clans in the mountains to a free-for-all battle. The chiefs accepted and the duel began. At the end of the thread, Gronk had only one troll left in front of him. To recap the names and appearances of the chiefs;

Gronk, our hero. Large, muscular, grey furred and missing half his face (See thread two). The strongest troll in the fight by appearances.

Weshak, small, white furred skilled at tearing out throats with his teeth. Had his head torn off in the last update.

Gulank, black furred, as tall as Gronk but terribly fat and a lover of bearhugs. Gronk tore off both his arms and his head.

Fellash, the only troll still standing apart from Gronk. Tall, but not terribly muscular. Has a boulder like camouflage pattern on his fur.

Gronk stepped back, placing the corpse of Gulank between him and the other trolls. He brought the arm up to his mouth and began to chew on it, more thoughtfully than in a fit of hunger. As he watched, Weshak finally managed to break Fellash’s grip. The little white troll rolled away and tried to get to his feet. There was a blur, then he was on the floor again. Fellash was on top of him with an arm wrapped around his neck. The speed of the movement had been lost to even Gronk’s sharp eyes, and he noted that Fellash’s face was entirely neutral. He looked more like a troll doing an unpleasant chore than in a fight for his life against two very powerful opponents. Weshak’s face grew redder and redder as he struggled to escape the choke hold. It is possible to choke a troll to death, but it takes a very long time. It’s easier to deprive them of oxygen until they are weakened, then attack in another way.

As Weshak’s head lolled, Fellash moved quickly and efficiently. He hooked two of his claws under the other troll’s jaw, puncturing the skin and fur to get a better hold, and started to pull upwards. At the same time, he began to slash around with his other hand. He was trying to weaken the muscle and tendons in the neck to make sure the head could come off. His gaze shifted from his task to Gronk’s face. As they stared at each other, Weshak’s head came loosed with dull sound like wet paper being ripped in two.

>What should Gronk do? Who should he attack? Using magic may have serious consequences.

As Weshak’s head fell to the ice, Gronk sprang. Fellash kicked the body of the white troll into his way and rolled to Gronk’s right. The body’s impact against Gronk slowed him down enough for Fellash to gain the advantage, who hacked both his sets of claws into Gronk’s arm. They both split apart, leaping backwards. For a few moments, they simply eyed each other. Gronk was shocked at how fast the other troll had reacted, particularly as Fellash’s throat was still mending itself. Gronk turned so that his left arm faced his opponent, hopefully giving his right a chance to heal. Then he started to circle, playing for time. Fellash didn’t move, only turning his head to keep Gronk in sight. When Gronk had reached the edge of his vision, he sprang into an attack. Gronk moved fast, trying to grab the other troll. But Fellash twisted away and slashed Gronk’s side. Ignoring the sharp pain, the devourer lashed out with one foot and caught Fellash on the kneecap. The blow caused him to stumble backwards, and now Gronk had the edge. With his agility momentarily neutralised, Fellash tried to put some distance between him and Gronk. The Big Papa had other ideas, striding forward and sinking his claws into Fellash’s shoulder. He used his other arm to punch the tall troll in the face, disorientating him somewhat.

>Should Gronk use magic or his claws to finish Fellash off?

Fellash made a weak attempt to dislodge the claws lodged into his shoulder, but his claws sliced harmlessly against Gronk’s tough fur. Gronk continued to pound the tall troll’s face before pushing Fellash onto his back. Gronk moved slowly, not needing to rush, as Fellash was clearly confused after the battering. Gronk shuffled forwards and put a foot on Fellash’s throat, and pressed down. As the other troll’s head cleared, he started to scratch and claw at the foot. It was to no avail, as Gronk shifted not an inch. Instead he leaned all his weight on the foot. Fellash twisted and wriggled, but his struggles grew weaker and weaker. When they stopped entirely, Gronk began to work on severing the head. It was little different to the way he had removed Gulank’s, except that he moved with less speed. The fight had drained his energy, what with constant movement and healing. When the head came loose, he lifted it up to his eye level. Then he squeezed until the skull cracked open, revealing the dripping, grey feast from inside. The foot stamping and chanting of the surrounding trolls had stopped, leaving only an eerie silence. Grokn paid them no mine until he had the devoured the severed heads of all three chiefs. Then he turned on them, and roared. This clearly signalled that it was time to submit. Or time to die.

Every troll surrounding the circle fell to the floor, slamming their foreheads to the snow. Gronk stood tall, over a hundred trolls submitting to his rule. The only thing left was to collect the spoils.

>Cont.
>>
So much more fun to fight trolls. No defensive, no running, just rip and tear.
>>
The tour of the other tribe’s caves took several weeks, as a great distance separated them. Moruk and his chosen had counted the new bull trolls on the journey, marking the combined tribes as ninety four. The caves were similar in size to the cave back on God Eata, first home to Gronk and the Children. They had no doors, no defences and nothing other than the skeletons of many goats and trolls, it made Gronk feel superior, but also somehow untrollish. This was how trolls had lived for longer than any troll remembered. Maybe it was how they were supposed to live... but Gronk wasn’t much given to self reflection and soon dismissed this line of thought. The trip back to the mine took even longer, but was easier. Now he was followed by a horde, and several dozen new females.

When he returned, Ragnar and the tribe hailed him as the conquering hero he was, laying on several massive feasts. His son, Vulug, displayed his new knowledge of the common tongue, which made Moruk clealy jealous. His own studies had been interrupted by the trip north. It wasn’t long, however, before things returned to normal.

Gronk’s first decree was that all the trolls of the other tribes recognise his divinity. At first, this seemed to enrage some of them into open resistance. It only took a single troll to calm them, and to persuade them that worship was the preferable choice. They bowed down to the statue, but they seemed doubtful. They had seen no evidence of good hood, only a skill at fighting. Gronk rectified their opinion by wreathing himself in flames and screaming like a demon, causing most of them to run for their lives. When they had calmed enough, they truly saw him as a god.

After the new trolls had been suitably indoctrinated into the worship of Gronk, they were set to training in shifts with the metal claws. There weren’t enough for every troll, so training was a slow and laborious process. Gronk went to rectify this action by sending his dwarves back into the mines. He would have claws for every troll before he manufactured armour for anyone.
>>
>>26116481
The dwarves may now be set to a single action which will not change unless ordered, nor will it take an action past the first time.

though we dont have to set all the slaves in one task right. its only logical that those who have experience in smithing make weapons and rest mine ores. you shouldnt need two actions to order dwarves to do that.

I think we should drop the ash touch training for setting the dwarfs to mine then monitored of course we don't want them to dig a hole to escape.

Okay, the decision is

>Make claws
>Train with claws
>practise ash magic

However, I mentioned it takes an action to set the dwarves. They can be set to forging, but will quickly run out of iron. Do you guys want to drop one to replace it with a dwarf action?

Well, so far you can't make sire that anything touched by the energy isn't destroyed. So you could simply maintain the field, but it would damage anything to come into contact with it.

perfect. can we keep it steady in an area around ourselves? the wider the better.

At the moment, one metre is the maximum. It's not an instant death ray, it's quite a gradual process.

>>
>>26117115
...Why would he tell us that?
>>
>>26117037
we should experiment and see if it disintegrates arrows and bolts shot toward Gronk.

You should assume nothing, growing takes time. Or maybe it doesn't.

>>26117127
Who would you ask to shoot you?

Suggestion: build an expanded goat farming operation on the surface and see if you can get the goblins to learn how to farm and make the underground fungal farm the dwarves set up.

That way when our population expands we can keep food up without having to go raiding.

I would love to see the faces of the force in that human city when a good 150 or so trolls show up to take over.
>>
Gronk decided that the dwarves lacked structure to their time, allowing them more time to plot. Plotting could not be allowed, so he decreed that they were to spend all of their time in the mines. Tak-Tak managed to persuade him that working non-stop would both demoralise and destroy the dwarves. Instead, he said that they would spend two hours working for every hours sleep. This, he felt, would keep them occupied but not work them to death. The trolls, on the other hand, spent their days waiting for a turn with the claws. When they were allowed to use them, they would slash slice and practise with all their might. Everyone of the new trolls was both terrified by and wished to please Gronk. He had set them to train with these weapons, so train they would. Gronk spent his time working on sustaining his destructive ability. He had imagined using it like armour, destroying all that was around him. The only problem was that if he was wielding his axe while using the armour, the axe would be damaged as well.

Moruk and Vulug progressed quickly with their studies in common, but had started to develop a serious rivalty. Older, more experienced and openly known as the heir of Gronk, Moruk had the upper hand. But Vulug had a better mastery of common and a far faster wit. He delighted in making fun of Moruk’s difficulty with common and his slightly clumsy trollish accent. After a few weeks in Vulug’s company, Moruk begged Gronk to give him an assignment that sent him elsewhere. He suggested that the two of them could go hunting in the north, to look for something more interesting than goats.

Moruk and his goblins can go hunting if they want, since they don't need to train with the claws. We should definitely separate Moruk and Vulug. Moruk doesn't really need to learn common anyway. Maybe we could have Vulug teach common to the troll cubs.

Moruk and Vulug have rivalry? TOO BAD! Competition builds character-strength! However, we should make it clear that Vulug cannot lead the tribe. He is half-breed. We love him, but the others will not accept him. He will instead by shaman, whenever Ragnar finally has his little "accident." He should be able to wield magics, being our son born after we gained the power to wield magics. Why be a leader of masses when he can just advise and kill things with his powers? Less responsibility, more freedom, more fun.

Then, tell Moruk that he will not have to trouble himself with magics. He will be strong-smart, a true example of the new kind of troll we are making. Before this, trolls have been dumb-stupid, rock-eating fools. But Moruk is the first of the new trolls, the Children. All trolls after this will be smarter, will know common, and will live together and crush everything they hate. His little brother will be a powerful shaman, but he will not have the place in this world we are making for our children that true trolls will have. Sure, troll-kin like vulug will be welcomed and loved, but true-trolls will be better-best!

What do others think of this-this?

Sorry, but I'm not going to budge on this matter. The Battle for Marlas is important, too, and we've been preparing for that for a while. We've just united the trolls and we need to strike soon, while we've got the training and while we know that Marlas is poorly defended.

Plus, what makes you so sure that going hunting will only end up being a one turn deal?

>>26117962
If Ragnar ends up out of the picture, I'm fine with this.

That sounds like a pretty good idea to me but lets make sure Vulug can use magic before we go through with it maybe share Ragnar's corpse with him to make sure he does?
>>
>>26118045
This one here understands!
Scrivener! Make the follwoing clear to Moruk and vulug: Vulug will be shaman, and will help his older brother. Moruk will lead trolls, and protect his younger brothers. If Moruk dies before he makes-has good-smart heir, Vulug should assert dominance. If Vulug die in battle, Moruk must honor him and give vulugs body to his first-born child, yes-yes.
>>
>>26117962
vulug should be a shaman apprentice before he becomes a shaman, so ragnar will be around for a while. why the hell are you guys so intent on killing him since the first threads.
>>
Though somewhat tempted by the offer of new hunting grounds and new prey, Gronk told Moruk that he couldn’t go. He gave Moruk permission to go out with his dozen, who had excelled in their training with Mendal. In a act of generosity that was out of character, Gronk allowed Mendal permission to go too. Gronk was overseeing the training of his warriors, almost all of whom were now outfitted with the new claws. Tink-Tank had been working overtime with his dwarf and goblin underlings to produce as many as possible as fast as possible, without diluting the quality. He asked if he could pull in more dwarves from the mining to be trained as apprentice smiths. Gronk told him he would consider it.

War was foremost in Gronk’s mind, as he now decided to pursue the ballista. He had two trolls mount it on their shoulders while kneeling, and two goblins to aim and load. The only problem was aiming; neither the trolls nor the goblins knew how. Gronk was approached by the two dwarves who had expressed enthusiasm in the ballista before, claiming that they understood the principles of aiming the ballista and might even be able to build a harness for it. As with Tink-Tank, Gronk told them he would think on it. Gronk was watching the bulls compete in unarmed combat beneath the statue of him when Vulug approached him. The trollkin had grown fast, being now almost the same size as an adult human. He was making leaps and bounds with his language as well. He spoke both common and trollish fluently, and was learning to read at an alarming rate. He came to Gronk with a plea not dissimilar to Moruk’s; the freedom to do something independently. He wished to go to the Märlas alone, to experience the city as a citizen rather than an outsider.
>>
>>26118086
Because while he is incredibly useful he is by far the least loyal of all of our Trolls.

And maybe having Vulug study under Ragnar would be a good idea.
>>
>>26118108

>Shaman: Ragnar Stone Gobbler, master of earth magics.
>Scout: Moruk the cunning, Heir of Gronk and hero of the goblins. Owns a metal sword.
>Population: 180 Trolls (131M, 40F, 6M, 2F cubs) 1 human/troll halfbreed, male
>Slaves: 97 Goblins ( 57M, 25F, 7M 8F children)

>>26118078
Sorry, didn't see that before I updated. You could list it as the response to Vulug's request?
>>
>>26118159
I'm not saying he is unloyal just that his loyalty is not as strong as any of our other trolls and he does not worship us as a God like the others.
>>
>>26118108
Vulug want see-see human-meat? This.... This not good. We must make sure that he can go, but that he will not stay and tell-talk of our plans and our new trolls.

Better yet, let the boy go. But send a goblin to reveal his identity as a troll-kin to the people of the city, so that they drive him and and he comes to hate them. He will then return to us, and love us and hate those who are not our Children.

Also, Train dwarves, work on ballistae, and make the new vision of what trolls shall be (smart, common-speaking, master of other races and strong-united) known to Ragnar. Then, tell him he will be allowed to die of natural causes, as we do not need his magic anymore. When he dies, Vulug will eat him and gain his magic. This new-better type of trolls and assurance of no threat will gain us his full loyalty, which we will need if the Children are to become a truly stable nation. Yes-yes, plan-plan for future.
>>
>>26118086
Agreed. If Ragnar should die, Vulug will be his heir. For now, though, Vulug will just be an apprentice. We don't really need to rock the boat and increase Vulug's influence just yet.

>>26118108
Allow Vulug to visit Marlas, on the condition that he report everything he finds out during his visit (I would ask him to swear to reveal nothing about our plans, but we need to make him think we trust him). Before he goes, inform Vulug and Ragnar that Vulug is to be Ragnar's heir, and that Vulug will enter Ragnar's tutelage as soon as he returns from Marlas.

Allow the two Dwarves to work on the ballista, and pull three Dwarves from the mines to help Tink-Tank in his smithing.

Actions:
D.) Produce spiked shields; enough for all trolls.
E.) Train with these shields.
H.) Have two of our more stealthy goblins follow Vulug form a distance as he goes to Marlas.

>>
>>26118121

With Moruk out hunting, Gronk felt he could show Vulug a little favour. He decided to enlighten him about the plans he had made for the future, both Vulug’s and the Children’s. Moruk was to be Gronk’s heir, but Vulug was to be Ragnar’s. He would learn the way s of magic, and the ways of the outside world, so that he could advise Moruk and Gronk better. He would go to Märlas, stay there for a few weeks, then return and share his findings with Gronk. The half-breed seemed both pleased and dissatisfied with his future. It was clear he wanted to be Gronk’s heir, but would settle fro being Ragnar’s for now. On the same day, Gronk went to Ragnar and attempted to illuminate him too. The shaman had felt both alienated and threatened by Gronk’s new power and advisors. But now the Big Papa tried to reassure him, saying that he would be a teacher, not just to Vulug but to all the Children of the Mountain. Unlike Vulug, Ragnar seemed very pleased with his role, perhaps because he thought Gronk had come to kill and eat him. Gronk allowed Tink-Tank three new apprentices, to be trained in the forging of metal claws and other weapons. Gronk even allowed the two dwarves access to the ballista and his trolls to take measurements for a harness.

Training still went on from the early morning to late at night, never truly ceasing. As the trolls still had to train in shifts, those not training slept while they could and spent their waking hours using the claws. They had even started working on new ideas, like partnering trolls for battle. Where one troll might fall when surrounded two could resist dozens of troops while guarding each other’s backs. The goblins went out onto the mountain to gather wood for the new shields, even as the dwarves toiled in the mine for metal ore. It was completely clear which race was favoured more, as one worked in the open air with ample breaks and equal work time to sleep time, while the other laboured twice as much as they slept.

When Vulug set off, Tak-Tak was able to get back to work on his great work; the book of Gronk. Unfortunately, this meant long hours of time in which Gronk would have to recount his many deeds for the little goblin. On the flip side of the coin, Gronk spent all his other time sleeping, eating, and getting to know the new females.

The goblins worked quickly, bringing in a dozen trees within a week. Using carpentry tools taken from the dwarves, they stripped, treated and readied the wood for being used for production. Gronk wanted at least three dozen shields ready as fast as possible. Tink-Tank hardly ever left the forge to exercise some of his power. He ate, slept and worked there round the clock, his dedication impressing Gronk and shaming other slaves into working harder. The shields came out of his workshops faster than anyone anticipated, as near to perfect as he could make them. The trolls quicjly adapted them into the training regimes, forming into groups at Gronk’s orders. These groups were made up of four trolls apiece, one with a shield and three with metal claws. The spikes on the shield and their weight made them lethal weapons, but they could also be used to shield the trolls from projectiles or fire if need be.

>Cont.

>>26120240
As enjoyable as the lazy days had been, Gronk knew it was time to train himself. He had the warrior trolls elect the four best fighters of the lot and send them to him. All four were claw users, three hailing from the Children, while the last was once one of Fellash’s tribe. It was easy to tell, as his dappled, boulder like fur was similar to his. All of that tribe had the same sort if fur, it was the source of many jokes by the rest of the trolls. They gathered in front of Gronk in the great hall and prostrated themselves. When the formalities had been observed, Gronk told them what was to follow; they would be fighting him, with a reward in the balance. He drew his axe, rolled his shoulder and beckoned them. It seemed that they were uncomfortable attacking him, but the reward was enticing. He encouraged them by hacking his axe into someone’s side before ripping it out. Now they understood he was serious. They came on fast, claws slicing through the air. Gronk blocked a few blows and dodged away from a few others before replying with his own attacks. He used both his hands to increase his dexterity and power, hacking into their fur and limbs with every blow. Two went down fast, whimpering in pain. The last of the original Children slammed his gauntlet into Gronk’s side, cutting him deeply. Gronk answered with a head butt that knocked the troll unconscious. Now there was only the grey furred troll left. He swayed on the spot, feinting to either side. For a few moments, Gronk danced to his tune and stood on the defence. Then he remembered himself, and charged. The other troll tried to dodge, but was balled over and had the axe pressed to his neck. Gronk had won, once again proving his superiority.

This one agrees, we must expand our food production! We should let the trolls loose across the mountains, with orders to kill all bears and wolves, but to leave the goats and deers untoucehd. With all other predators gone, the wild goat herds will flourish, and help support our greater numbers. It will also be a good bit of fun for the trolls too, and practice for their claws.

Find-find ballista plans! We must have several, to bolster our forces

We cannot father all trolls as much as we would like that. Too much inbreeding. Hold a great tourney when all trolls return from hunting all other predators on the mountains. Winners of great tourney will get reward of mating with those females from the new tribes. Prepare for future, yes-yes.

Also, mate with dwarf-breeder. Should not take an action, yes-yes?
>>
>>26120275
>train with ballistas

Chainmail for all trolls is too much! Trolls are huge, and we not have-got many-many blacksmiths. Chainmail making will take too long. Must prepare for war now. Shields are plenty and we have the claws. This one likes plan for goblins though. But in time, they will outnumber us, and will be a horde to protect our valuable troll warriors
>>
>>26120478
About troll breeding, we could avoid inbreeding by giving Gronks daughters to the best trolls as mats, when they are old enough. That way, everyone will be a descendant on Gronk eventually.
>>
>>26120478
I like your ideas.

>>26120275
>Kill all predators on the mountain to use them as food

Mate with dwarf
>>
>>26120735
Hunting for food, specifically with the carnivores as targets, right?
>>
>>26120746
Okay, decision made.

>>26120763
Okay, I'll incorporate that. In the long term, over population will actually destroy the goats. But Gronk wouldn't know that, so it's all good.
>>
>>26120791
We better get to work on killing the goats afterward, then. Next thread.

Also, when is Vulug coming back from his trip?
>>
>>26120813
Moruk is due back in this final update, Vulug sometime next thread.

Gronk spent the next few days practising with those trolls, and found something strange. Each day, they seemed to be getting slower and his axe was getting lighter. Eventually, he realised it was he who was improving daily. He found dodging attacks and wielding his axe easier and easier, as he moved it a blinding blur of metal and teeth. Moruk returned with his goblins while Gronk was sparring, and waited until he had finished. What he saw was impressive, and quite different to how Gronk normally fought. Mostly, Gronk used his body to absorb blows and the caught his attacker off guard. Now, he was moving away from blows and drawing his opponents off balance before striking. It was a welcome change. Moruk brought something special with him, the product of his trip. It was a huge bear pelt, the creature it came from must have been at least the size of Gronk. Moruk had killed and skinned it with his sword, eating the body out there in the mountains. He maintained there was enough fur to make a cloak for himself, Gronk and (here he gestured at the ragged, blood smeared are his sword entered the body) Vulug. Gronk withheld judgment on the cloaks, but nevertheless congratulated Moruk on such a fine kill.

Tak-Tak spent most of his time searching the archives with his under-scribes, feverishly seeking the plans to the ballista. He had narrowed down the area, using the time period it was built as a guide. He was confident he’s have it in a few days. At the same time, the trolls felt that Moruk had set the standard for how one must worship Gronk. They decided to go out hunting, and were given a clever idea by Moruk, the cunning one. He suggested hunting only those animals that preyed on the mountain goats, thus allowing the goats to grow in number unheeded. When the mine was almost empty of trolls, Gronk decided to test out something new. He had the goblins bring him a dwarf female, one of those yet to choose a dwarf to mate with. He lay with her for a night, trying his best no to damage her. Their coupling was not meant to be, however, as she died in the night. Gronk felt angered by this, but there was little he could do. He simply resolved to find new races in Märlas.
