In slightly unrelated news, IT LOOKS LIKE ACE COMBAT IS BACK ON THE MENU, BOYS!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ljDmBXWU2g

And now back to our regularly scheduled VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack. While there, you also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, got a new weapon called the Buzzbomb, recruited some new squad members, and helped Isolde regain her honor by defeating the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then returned to Gallia to help the Loyalists fight the GRA and rescue Archduchess Cordelia. You also finally decided to move on from your past and start a relationship with your longtime friend and XO, Sam. Now, you've been recruited by Lynch to destroy two Valkrur superweapons.

Today, Lynch has finally showed his assholish face at Castle Sturmfuhrer, ready to brief you on the specifics of your mission to sabotage Stonehenge, the Federation's ace in the hole in the war. He stops out of his staff car and greets you all in that monotone expression he always wears. However, he pauses for a second when he sees Grandma come out the door.

"Aaaaahhhh, Lynch, it's been so long since I've seen you!" Grandma says with false glee. "Last I saw, you were only yea high, and quite the crybaby."

"...Madam Sturmfuhrer." Lynch manages to say.

>Stand back and watch the fireworks.

>Hm, seems a bit slow today, huh?

Trying and failing to hide the big grin on your face, you step back and let Grandma do her thing. Without any fear or hesitation, Grandma strides toward Lynch, seemingly uncaring about the fact that he was the head of one of the most dangerous organizations on Europa.

"Hmmm, it seems you take more after your mother, which is quite the pity. Your father was quite the charmer!" Grandma says lightheartedly.

"I would rather not talk about personal matters at this time." Lynch replies stiffly.

"But you come all the way here, to my ancestral home! When WOULDN'T be the time to talk about personal matters?" Grandma steps a bit closer to Lynch. "It's a pity though. Your father was such a wonderful man. Always thinking about doing the right thing."

"I would like you to get to the point please, Madam." Lynch says flatly.

"Oh, really then? Well I'll get to the point." Grandma's expression darkens and she moves even closer to Lynch, standing uncomfortably close to his face. "Lucius Lynch was a good man who would do ANYTHING to protect his loved ones, something YOU of all people should know very well. I would like to remind you that I would do anything to protect my loved ones as well. If you EVER try to treat my grandson and his friends as pawns in your little games ever again, well... I'm sure the Eruseans would LOVE to know who was behind that little incident in Los Canas..."

It's here that you are shocked, as you've seen something happen that you've never seen before. Even though Lynch manages to maintain his calm demeanor, you can see beads of perspiration on his brow. The man was SWEATING.

"Duly noted." Lynch says simply.

"Good!" Grandma returns to her normal jovial self and slaps him lightly on the cheek. "Now you play nice with my grandson, alright?"

"So uh, WHAT exactly did Grandma do when she was young?" Sam whispers to you."

"I honestly have never thought to ask." You whisper back.

Lynch then turns back to you, coughing to clear his throat.

"If you would please, I'd like to get this briefing started right away. We're short on time."

Believing that seeing Lynch get stared down by Grandma was enough entertainment for the day, you and Sam don't protest and lead him to one the castle's more secure rooms, where Lynch begins to brief you.

According him, Stonehenge was located close to the Osean/Yuktobanian border, and consisted of a battery of eight massive cannons. However, the facility mostly relied on secrecy to stay safe, so its security complement wasn't very large, which was good for you. However, there were some issues that had to be cleared up first.

"Now, I understand you might have reservations attacking a Federation facility." Lynch says. "Will you be committing to a full assault, or will you try to avoid unnecessary casualties?"

The world Valkyria Chronicles is in diverges from our world quite a bit. For example, there are virtually no aircraft, this alters military doctrine quite a bit with the lack of air support. Secondly, the Carbine came first before the standard length rifle. Bolt action rifles are considered old and obsolete. Finally, people just love building stupidly large vehicles in the setting.

"I'd rather not kill Federation troops." You say flatly. "Especially since I've been fighting alongside them for quite a while now."

"Understandable. I've taken that into account." Lynch nods. "Then our only course of action would be a tactical stealth action. I have the clearances and means necessary to manufacture false identities and proper security clearances to get into the the facility. However, your vehicles might be a problem. Fenrir and Kilroy are... shall we say... somewhat recognizable."

"Well, that's kind of the point." You shrug.

"Yes well, if you don't want your involvement known, you will need alternatives." Lynch slides a file in front of you. "I managed to acquire two M4 medium tanks and a Growler half-track. All brand new."

"A Growler half-track?" You raise an eyebrow.

They weren't bad. Their main advantage over German armor was their numbers, but the Germans had crazy tanks. They were nice for the infantry support role.
>>
>>26122280
At the time they were released, yes.

Then the Germans upgraded from their Panzer IIIs and IVs to heavier armor, then the Americans upgraded.

I believe that the M4 was the first tank ever to use electric motors to turn the turret as well as hand crank it. It also comes with a vertical stabalizer for reduced gun sway during movement.

CODEX ENTRY UNLOCKED

One of the few things actually worth the steel its made of, the Federation's H3 "Growler" half-track acts as their primary combat troop transport. Unmodified, it can hold up to a dozen men with no issues.

Another one of the Growler's advantages is its simple utility and versatility. Literally anything from heavy machine guns, antitank cannons, mortars, and even radar sets can be mounted from the rear of the vehicle, giving it an endless amount of options. However, the obvious drawback is that such modifications will effectively eliminate its troop carrying capacity.

If there is anything bad that can be said about the Growler, it is its relatively thin armor and its open top. While the open top does allow troops to fire from relative safety as well as disembark quickly, it also leaves the vehicle vulnerable to indirect fire weapons such as grenades and artillery.

CODEX ENTRY UNLOCKED

The latest in the Federation's line of main battle tanks, co-designed and built by Emmeria, the M4 is the intended replacement from the Federation's aging M3 series of tanks, which have been badly outmatched since the beginning of EWII. The M4 is generally superior to the M3 in every aspect, and is comparable to Imperial tanks of equivalent size. However, M4s still have no ready answer to Imperial heavy armor, so like the M3, must rely on its superior numbers or mobility to prevail.

In general a stock M4 is inferior to a Type-36, but they are cheaper and very reliable.

The majority of German armor all the way up to the end of the war was StuG IIIs and Pz IVs, which Shermans could take on just fine. Tigers and Panthers could give 'em serious trouble in a straight fight, true, but to ignore that most of what they fought was well within their abilities is foolish.

You ask around the castle for a bit. With all the colorful characters and Darcsens that have gathered here, you're sure to find somebody good at driving a half-track.

And you don't have to look far.

"So... you're names Stig?" You ask, a bit perplexed.

"THE Stig." Your recruit says. You're not sure, but his accent sounds a bit Albian. "Anything with wheels, I can do. Half-tracks, I can tolerate. I never go full tread."

"So, did you fight in the war?"

"Depends which war you're talking about."

"But you're good?"

"The best."

In order to make sure, you give the Stig a test run in the Growler, and it's easy to say that he certainly proved himself in the subsequent demonstration. He literally drives circles around the obstacles, and pulls off maneuvers you didn't think were physically possible on a half-track.

"Is... is that even possible with a vehicle on WHEELS!?" Sam gapes.

"Apparently it is." You whistle. "He is SO in."

>Driver Acquired! THE STIG

Afterwards, Lynch gives you the rest of the details, mostly just extraneous data.

"Now, there are three possible ways to destroy Stonehenge that I see." Lynch says, pointing at a map of the facility. "You can go to the facility's sublevels, where the ammunition bunker is located. If you can override the blast doors and detonate the munitions down there, you can collapse the entire facility. Quick and dirty, and a lot of collateral damage. Or, if prefer something a bit more surgical, you can always try seizing the central fire control station and turn the guns on each other, or plant charges on each individual gun. Each gun has their own dedicated ragnite power core, which means you don't need much explosive to set them off."

"Demoing the guns themselves seems to be the safest option." You say.

"That works." Lynch nods. "I'll make sure you get extra explosives then."

"And, uh... the Federation isn't going to know about, this, right?" You ask.

"Captain Sturmfuhrer, I'm essentially committing treason and you are committing and act of war against the Federation. We both have a lot to lose if our involvement is made public." Lynch says. "On that note, I'd have to recommend you stow away your more recognizable equipment, such as that ungodly large gun you've started carrying around."

"Noted." You say. And you were start to like carrying around Var mk2...

"If you're going to be around the guns, then you should go in disguised as guards and maintenance staff. Security won't pay much attention to low level staff."

"That sounds understandable." Sam nods.

"That's all. Meet me at the rendezvous and I'll make arrangements to have you shipped to Stonehenge."

With that, Lynch makes his exit, and you notice wryly that he deliberately takes the path that ensures he doesn't cross paths with Grandma before he makes his escape. Afterwards, you decide that before gathering up the Demons, you want to get the vehicles Lynch donated to you checked out.

Headcase, Julia, Heloise, and your new engineer, Arthur Asimov, give all three vehicles a thorough look over, and conclude that they're all perfectly fine. Factory fresh with no modifications to speak of.

Well, after having been spoiled with having Fenrir and Kilroy, proper Gallian tanks, around, you decide to have Qyburn take a look at them as well. After seeing the Federation stuff in action, you're not too sure you want to fully trust your life to it.

Qyburn, for his part, as absolutely fascinated by the machines. Well, to be fair, he's pretty much fascinated by ANY machine.

Ahhhh, the M4 medium tank and the Growler! Such dependable, versatile machines. While the Growler is comparable to our own APCs, the M4 doesn't quite measure up to the Type-36, but is still rather respectable. What you like me to do with them?

"Try and keep it subtle, Qyburn, we don't want to stand out, after all." You say.

"Oh pooh, that's no fun!" Qyburn sighs. "I suppose, I can add on some composite armor plates and replace their ammunition with HVAP shells. You wouldn't mind if I upgun it from 75mm to 76mm? You would get better range and penetration with that sort of gun."

A flash hider for a tank I persume, but theres no point. Its a tank, you can't sneakify that shit without some major compromises. For example AP ammo would become useless because the very premise of AP is to us every last bit of sanics you got to punch through armour. Qyburn starts off the modification process right away. Now that he's got a dedicated team helping him, what would have usually taken days to complete was done in a matter of hours. Extra armor made out of the same proprietary composite material Qyburn designed was welded onto the hulls, while the cannons were swapped out. While they were slightly longer than normal, it was pretty hard to tell that just by first glance.

As for the Growler, Qyburn also put extra composite armor on it, particularly around the passenger compartment.

"Now, would you like me at add on any sort of special equipment to the Growler? It's basic weapon is that heavy machine gun on a pintle mount, but I can add on something else, or even something a bit bigger! Or you have the option of covering up the compartment with more armor...

>>

>>
>>26123878
"I think the .50 cal is adequate armament." You say. "You think we could pack in some radio equipment and some more armor on top?"

"Ah, so you intend on making it a command vehicle. I'll get right on it!" Qyburn says happily.

Needless to say, Qyburn performed very well. Instead of making it a fixed roof, he designed it so that the armored top could be folded up to allow the vehicle to be open air if needed, which was a huge boon once you actually started the trip down to Stonehenge. The though of having to drive there cooped up in a tight metal box with a dozen other people was not very enticing.

And you notice your other new recruit, Arthur, sitting at the end, being his usual quiet self. In some ways he was even more anti social than Tarin, keeping to himself and muttering and sometimes outright babbling about these weird things called "transistors", that were "the way of the future", or something like that. Honestly, the other Demons were rather hesitant in approaching him. Even Heloise, who was usually the friendliest among you, has kept her distance, despite the fact that she was the only one who could decipher his technically minded ramblings.

"Not the way I do, sir. Not he way I do." Arthurs shakes his head and turns away. You feel like this is really all you're going to get out of him for now.

You then bang on the partition separating you from the driver compartment. "Hey, how long till we get there?"

"Thirty more minutes." The Stig replies dryly.

"Okay, bring us to a stop here. I want to get one final word in."

"Yes sir."

Your small impromptu convoy pulls over the side of the road. Being in Osea, far behind the front lines, it was nice being able to move around with relative freedom from the fear of ambush or enemy attack.

"Okay, we have to set a few things straight..." You say to your assembled squad.

And with that your roles are quickly decided. You, Sam, Ramirez, Alek, and Elsa would be posing as a security team, while everybody else would be posing as maintenance, with the exception of the drivers, of course.

Your official cover was to be a routine inspection of the cannons by technicians specialized in working with Valkrur tech. This necessitated Heloise and Arthur taking a crash course in the field, but they picked it up pretty well, at least enough to convince people they were experts.

You reach the first security gate, which is manned by four heavily armed guards. You show them your ID as well as your work orders.

>I can handle this myself

You know, I think it would have been a tad better to destroy the Imperial weapon first because it would be really awkward if we were to complete this mission successfully and then fail the next one because then we would have just screwed Europa into being under Imp rule or at least Imp influence by getting rid of the only thing to counter the Imps super weapon.
>>
>>26125766
I thought of that too, but I think the implication is that both weapons are months away from completion, so we should have time to move the sub and buzzbomb the other weapon.
>>
>>26125599
"Alright, Sam, you can come along. It's not lying if I tell her you're my XO, after all." You say. "Isolde, Ramirez, you've got command the sabotage team. Try and get all those cannons rigged as fast as possible. Hopefully we'll be able to distract the base commander to keep her from noticing. And remember, MINIMAL CASUALTIES."

"Got it, boss." Ramirez nods.

"It will be done." Isolde salutes.

"Well, into the breach, then." Sam sighs, slinging Grungnir. It looked similar enough to a regular lance that Lynch had no objects about her taking along. However, as for you, you had to leave behind Var mk2, having to instead settle for your trusty Rossmore shotgun and a cheap, stamped metal toy the Federation called an SMG, lovingly called the "Bullet Fucker", due to its ability to spit lead and nothing else. You wryly note that it's of Perrault manufacture.

You mentally review Lynch's notes on the base commander. Commander Lilian Garret of the Osean Special Projects Division. Originally a technical instructor at one of Osea's engineering academies, she was transferred to the Stonehenge Project due to her expertise in Valkrur technology. However, Lynch has pointed out that she's never actually seen combat, and she is in fact a Harling supporter. Something you might be able to take advantage of if you needed to.

You and Sam manage to pass through a couple more security checkpoints without any trouble. Considering you had the fake rank of Federation Colonel, you pretty much outranked everybody on this base with the exception of the commander herself. Plus, Osea was a far cry from Albion, Ustio, and Gallia, so you weren't nearly as famous here.

You finally reach Commander Garret's office, which is actually right across the fire control room. Convenient. You see Garret is an older, middle aged woman with short, dark blonde hair. Obviously she's decided to make a career out of the army. You feel a bit bad, and hope that destroying Stonehenge won't put too big a damper on her employment prospects.

"Ah, Colonel Ozling, I take it." Garret salutes you. "And what would an officer directly from Central Command be doing here?"

Don't you think I realize what's going on here, miss? Who do you think I am, huh? Don't you think I know that if I was some hotshot from out of town that pulled inside here and you guys made a reservation mistake, I'd be the first one to get a room and I'd be upstairs relaxing right now. But I'm not some hotshot from out of town, I'm a small reporter from "Rolling Stone" magazine that's in town to do an exclusive interview with Michael Jackson that's gonna be picked up by every major magazine in the country. I was gonna call the article "Michael Jackson Is Sitting On Top of the World," but now I think I might as well just call it "Michael Jackson Can Sit On Top of the World Just As Long As He Doesn't Sit in the Beverly Palm Hotel 'Cause There's No Niggers Allowed in There!"

"Why, I'm here to blow up your guns." Pause. Then laugh and shake head. "No, no. Joking, joking. I've had requests from several important individuals, who wish to remain nameless at this juncture, to look over the facility and inspect the progress. You know how it is with some people, they never want to attach their names to anything risky until AFTER everything's said and done. Then they come out with all the typical political platitudes about how they supported the project all along." Shrug. "Basically, I'm here on Politics. "Indeed." Garret nods, still eying you somewhat suspiciously. "This isn't the first time something like this has happened. How much do you want?"

"I'm not interested in your bribes." You say flatly. "I don't know what my predecessors have done, but I'm here to make sure that those guns WORK. I've been to the frontlines, Commander, and good men are dying every day. Every day those cannons aren't firing is another day the Empire kills more of our men."

"Ah, a patriot. I guess that works just as well." Garret sighs and leans back in her chair. "Since you apparently don't seem interested in the party line, I'll just give you the blunt version of my report. Too much of our budget is tied up in logistics and not enough in research in development. Do you know that we've already been stockpiling ammunition, and we haven't even test fired a single one of these guns yet? I've warned them multiple times that these guns have been sitting underground for thousands of years. Who knows what will happen if we turn them on?"

"You don't seem to have much confidence in this project, Commander."

"What else can I say? Our mutual bosses are more interested in these guns as weapons than opportunities. They don't care how it works as long as it does, which, as an engineer, I find endlessly deplorable."

Now the gears in your head are turning. Maybe there's a way you can play this out. Garret doesn't exactly seem like a bad person, so maybe there's a way you can do this without torpedoing her career...

"You know," you say, looking out the window, which has a rather commanding view of the the guns. You wonder which one the Demons are working on right now. "I've always wondered. How exactly do these guns work? Are they just larger version of regular cannons?"

"In a way, yes and now." Garret says, her voice picking up more energy as she starts talking about something she is more comfortable about. "In the most basic of terms, they're exactly like cannons However, it's their method of firing that's absolutely fascinating."

Garret stand sup from her seat and takes position next to you, looking at the guns with admiration.

"As you know, conventional cannons use chemical propellant to fire their shells. These Valkrur cannons don't use any of that, though. They use some sort of electromagnetic energy to propel projectiles. It's very efficient, being able to propel shells farther than any regular cannon ever could. It's also highly power intensive, which is why each gun is individually powered."

"I see, that's rather fascinating." You nod. You take a quick glance back at Sam.

Let me put it bluntly, since you were honest to me before. The politics are shifting not to your favor. There is talk of completely defunding the entire project very soon. Test fire all the cannons at once, we only need one working cannon, the rest can be scrapped for research material.

"If it helps, put my name on the order. My superiors have given me authority to accelerate our progress by any means necessary, so if anything fails, it would be on my account, not yours."

Well, the genius of Lynch's cover identities were that they were almost foolproof. If this worked, then the Federation would be chasing a nonexistent colonel instead of you.

"I-I see." Garret stammers. "The guns are theoretically ready to fire, but we just haven't completely figured out how they worked yet. Come, I can show you from the fire control center."

As the name implied, the fire control center had a commanding view of the entire complex. There were several technicians at the ancient consoles, which were now augmented by modern equipment grafted on to them."

"Everybody! We will be test firing all eight cannons!" Garret announces. "Unlock the safeties and load the test shells! Input targeting coordinates for the test target!"

With that, everybody leaps into action, radioing data, turning knobs, pressing buttons, everything In the distance, the guns begin to creak and groan as their ragnite cores flare to life. Ancient gears click as the guns turn.

"All personnel clear from the danger area!" One technician yells.

"Fire cannon one!" Garret yells.

"Firing!"

Then you see the cannon glow a bright blue as the ragnite core charges. You also see lightning arc across the barrel and the weapon glows brighter...

When Sam comes back, have her whisper in our ear.

"My XO has just informed me that my superiors a furious, and demand me and my team's immediate return, or face charges of sabotage and treason. I... I have to go. I need to take the blame and protect my men. Dammit, I can't believe that they set me up as the fall guy. Good luck Garret, it has been a pleasure meeting you.

Have sam leave saying she should prepare for the message back to the superiors.

That's far too suspicious and convenient.

Ride with her but make it apparent that we've really gotta boogie soon to give a report

It reads like a dramatic monologue performed by an actor as he's walking off stage. It raised my eyebrow.

Repeatedly trying to leave the scene IMMEDIATELY is going to fuck us over until either lock down gets lifted or we can get lost in the confusion.

My worry is that Garrett might already suspect foul play.
>>
>>26127742
You decide to go along with Garret, so as not to make her suspicious. You then notice the Growler trailing close behind you, blending in with the convoy of security, rescue, and fire vehicles as they race towards the wrecked cannon. When you reach the wreckage, which is still smoking hot, Garret immediately jumps out, the engineer inside her determined to figur out what went wrong.

"You know, Commander, I will have to be leaving soon in order to bring word of this back to the higher ups. They need to this happened, and the longer we keep it in the dark, the worse it will look for us."

"Agreed." Garret says, distracted by the wreckage. "Return to the HQ right away and send your message from there."

We can easily bluff the gate guard, right? Besides it just looks like we're trying to avoid responsibility for this charlie foxtrot.

Contact Lynch or whoever our "superior" is (Did we setup Elizabeth to pretend as our superior?) , and have him/her order us to return immediately.

Hint to sent a (pretend) military police force to arrest us incase this doesn't work.

If we are not allowed off base, warn Garret that the MPs are coming to collect us
>>
>>26128079
We outrank just about everyone on-base save Garret. We can bluff by the MPs.

Am I the only one that wants to try and keep her reputation clean from this SNAFU?
>>
>>26127996
You decide that you've long overstayed your welcome. The moment you step into the Growler, you immediately order your convoy to get the hell out of here. With that, your vehicles zoom for the nearest exit. As you approach the checkpoint, you can see the guards approach in an effort to stop you, though their casual postures seem to indicate they don't seem to suspect you of anything.

I'm sure Lynch has plenty of fake MPs on hand to help implicate us in a sabotage that so far we haven't been caught for.
>>
>>26128099
The problem is that the guards may not let us out without Garret's explicit orders. Play it safe and slow, and we'll have perfectly legitimate reasons to request to leave.

Just a side thought, we probably have enough imperials in our party to pass as an imperial infiltration squad.
>>
>>26128231
Everything we have done has been flawless so far, it should be easy for Lynch to cover up our involvement.
>>
>>26128111
You tell your convoy to grind to a stop. You really have no wish to shoot these guys, but you don't want to just blow past them and give away your cover either.

"Sorry, sir, we can't let you pass through here." The lead guard says, stepping toward you. "Commander Garret's orders. Nothing gets in or our of the base. Period"

The guard look at each, not quite convinced, but then again, you're a goddamn colonel and they're just privates. Ultimately, they relent.

"Alright, you can pass." The lead guard opens the gate and your convoy zooms out at top speed.

"Woooo!" Sam finally lets out a deep breath, as if she had been holding it in this entire mission. "HOLY SHIT that was tense as hell! I would've rather we just rode around shooting everything up!"

"I was tempted to do that too." You sigh. "Honestly, Elizabeth, I don't know how you can handle all that espionage stuff."

"Well, it's not for everyone." She shrugs.

"Also, Heloise, Arthur, good job on rigging those cannons to blow in record time." You nod to your engineers.

"Pretty simple, actually. We didn't even need to plant explosives. We just had to reconfigure the ragnite cores so they'd self destruct the moment they were powered up.

"Isn't that... more dangerous than just planting charges? What if they powered it up while you were still or near the gun?"

Heloise blanches. "Oh crap I didn't think of that."

"Job's done anyways." Arthur mutters. "Such waste, all that machinery..."

As you drive up the road, you see a massive Federation convoy of troops and tanks zoom past you, headed toward Stonehenge at full speed. The men in the larger convoy don't even give you a second glance as they blow past, meaning that you've dodged a bullet.

"Well, that was a lot simpler than I thought it would be." You remark.

"Well, Lynch DID pretty much hand the whole place to us on the silver platter..." Sam points out. "We still have the Imp weapon to deal with, and I don't think we can just waltz in."

"Well, I guess we'll worry about it when the time comes. You sigh. You have a feeling that time will come soon.
