@GhostAdjutant

You were a ghost operative of the Terran Dominion, under Emperor Arcturus Mengsk. Your Codename is Delta Phoenix. You received a transmission from Korhal. "The Emperor is Dead. Long live the Emperor. "

It seems like a lifetime since the fall of Korhal disabled your neural inhibitor and you went rogue. With the help of a rogue Dominion Marine, Jacob Henderson, you and your small crew secured a Gorgon-Class battlecruiser you now call The Daluke. The Dominion, bounty hunters, and criminal scum alike are all after you with a massive 1.5 billion credit bounty on your head. But they're going to have to earn it, first.

Adjutant A.I. online. Good Morning, Delta Phoenix.

Governor Lakas' family and Quanah remain in our Brig, Commander. Mrs. Lakas is requesting your presence. The XO has put forward several candidates for management of your Murric installations. You have no other pressing matters at this time.

You head for the brig as you consider the base commander options. Lakas' family, the woman and two daughters who's names you haven't bothered to learn, are still your captives. Given the woman's earlier response it was very clear she knew who you were and what you did. Knocking her unconscious probably didn't win you any favors.

The on duty guards salute you, before you dismiss them. You press the console between yourself and the cell, and the one-way cell mirror becomes a window.

The woman steps up to it, her glare showing you no kindness, as she asks.

After this contact the President of Murric. We need more land for our starports, and we should probably tell her that Murric should send a delegation to both of the other 'free' fringe worlds to help organise themselves against both the Dominion and Zerg threat.

Although this does not apply to Dominion ranking classifications, it would be Naval, Commander.

>>26155292
Her record indicates that she will prioritize the production of ground forces at any base she is assigned to. Tangible benefits on the Daluke are minimal, as she is one of several ground force coordinators on the bridge currently.
>>
>>26155312
Yeah, she's definitely staying onboard. Shall we make her Captain of the ship?

Ok, forget what I said.
>>
>>26155312

Any news from New Albuquerque? How did the rebellion go? Anything new on the zerg?
>>
>>26155346
ok, let's wait until we get some other vessel, like a Minotaur. Then we could probably put he in charge
>>
>>26155363
Henderson's current rank under my programming is First Sergeant, Commander.

I have proceeded with the promotion at your request.

The position already exists, Commander. Ground force intel is supplied by the bridge of the Daluke or Hercules as available.

Ground based intel is usually managed by squad leaders.
>>
>>26155424
Excellent, that'll give the man something to brag about. Update all other ranks accordingly.

As for the GroundOps position, sounds like everything is working there. Onto politics then?

Palmer has been deployed to Murric and appointed as base Commander.

I am contacting the President now, Commander. Please hold.

>...

>"Well if it ain't my favorite Battlecruiser. What can I do you for?"

>"I need more space. I've managed to acquire a few schematics, specifically for starports and wraiths. I don't suppose you'd be able to do any sort of trade?"

>"Oh Darlin'. The Murrican constitution doesn't allow the government to own land, much less hand it out to foreign powers. That said, I will gladly trade you a prime base location for everythin' you got."

>"One more thing. Kilaro and New Albuquerque are both undergoing rebellions. Governments will be forming soon I expect. Your planet provides for them, and as you're the only stable planet in this region I was wondering if there's anything you can do to stabilize them at the moment."

>"I would just not be the best President I could be if I wasn't already on top of it. We've been tryin' to sort out Kilaro an' New Al-bee-qwer-qee since before you popped up. If it weren't for those corporate scumbags at Tarento we'd've had it done months ago."
>>
>>26155567

"On top of it" meaning? What exactly is being done?

Are you aware of the zerg attacks? We can use the broodmother's threat to push for a regional alliance of worlds, with a coordinated military and mutual defense pacts."

Mapping new base location, Commander.

9 Mineral nodes and 2 geysers available. Room is sufficient for all current buildings plus additional buildings for both production and supply.

Recommendation: Allow base commander to focus on new territory and continue operations.

Starmap loaded.

>Volcanic World HA002: Old Zerg hive world. Nuked out years ago during the Brood Wars. Heavy in minerals, vespene gas, and geothermal energy.

>Forest World NN014 "New Ares": Small colony in operation, mostly agriculture. Close to heavy shipping lanes. Complete radio silence.

>Urban World Kilaro: City planet that is home to a battleground of attempted government forces and criminal organizations. Supplies are in high demand.

>Tarento: Urban planet with a corporate-nationalist government and a minor Dominion presence. There is a black market located on an abandoned orbital platform over the planet.

>Nohallan: Fringe Ice Planet. Hostile Wildlife and climate. Well outside of Dominion space. Home to viking mercenary base.

>Barren World JZ01919: No atmosphere, high in inorganic salts and rare compounds. Mining platform station "Dick's Paradise" in orbit.

>Murric: Current location. Continental Fringe World. Provides 92% of Agriculture for nearby systems. Fiercely independent anti-Dominion population.

>Corendis: Jungle World, known for heavy Safari activity. Low in minerals, high in vespene gas.

>New Albuquerque: Fringe Desert Planet. Civilian Shipbuilding industry. Revolution in progress. Low in minerals and vespene gas.

>Station 114: Fringe territory observation post. Previously Confederate, now occupied by ex-Confederate mercenaries.

Begin achieving consensus, voting will begin when ready.
>>
>>26155861

I think half of that number should be sufficient for the time being.

Some musings:

a) A vision indicated Alpha was operating on New Albuquerque with a Dominion force, looking for us. That means that force is enroute to, or already at, NA. We need to intercept that force, or at least warn the NA defenders.

b) do we have anyone on our crew that has connections on the pirate station we're going to visit? Anyone that can provide intel on major figures, groups or politics there?

So much for your plans. You need to deploy to New Ares. With a prevalent Zerg threat you can't just ignore an entire colony going dark.

The Hercules is loaded with your ghost squad and three marine squads with medic and firebat support, as well as your Zerg specialist. Mia's Banshee is also loaded, and three wraiths for support.

Minutes later you stand on the bridge next to Henderson, who chews on his cigar heavily.

>"What'cha thinkin' it is boss? We gonna have us a stand up fight or another bughunt?"

>"Don't know which one I'd rather have, Henderson."

>"Ain't that tha' truth."

>"All stations standby for jump."

The view of Murric is replaced by that of a green and blue sphere much like the one you left. The large polar caps are the only readily visible contrast.

>"Status report, Ensign."
>"Nothing on sensors, sir. Not even power. The colony's abandoned as far as I can tell."

Loading colony layout now, commander.
>>
>>26156287
Well it's gonna take time to build up a force anyway, besides we need proper technology to fight the Zerg. our XO said so.

The colony consists of several divisions.

There is a primary space port which is connected to the communciations array for FTL comms. There are residential buildings leading up to the Commercial district. Surrounding the exterior of the colony are farmlands and logging operations.

Outside of the colony Perimeter wall is the power plant. It's cold fusion and the cells should still be active barring any major damage. There is additionally a barracks of local militia members and a second communications array and sensor network attached to the Barracks.

Using the banshee we can only deploy one squad at a time.

Tactical recommendation is to keep the Hercules in orbit until a threat can be properly assessed.
>>
>>26156358

Load the banshee with Delta Squad, have it do a close sweep of the colony while cloaked. If we can find any colonists, contact them. Otherwise, scan for hostiles. If nothing has been found, drop the ghosts off at the barracks.
>>

You step off the banshee, followed by Whiskey, Charlie, and November. There's no sign of anything. Mia heads back to the ship to have a second team ready.

>"Dale, what do you make of this?"
>"No creep. It might not be Zerg. The buildings aren't showing signs of any Zerg biomass and nothing on sensors."

Your HUD indicates the barracks and large sensor tower in the distance are completely unpowered. Your team makes for the barracks.

As you enter the entrance has several auto-turrets in place. It's not standard for fringe worlds to have guns pointed at the door, but you don't see a single bullet hole.

You step through the halls, several tables are overturned, a bunk is on it's side, paper and other debris litters the floor.

>"Oi, is 'at a boot?"

You notice the shoe on the floor. November slowly advances and kicks it.

>"It's a boot!"

You keep moving, the armor is still stocked. Whatever happened most of the C-14s and CMCs didn't get used.

You still have squads available for deployment. Where should you send the next squad?

>"Hercules 1, this is Phoenix team. Dispatch Hercules 2 to Powerplant, over."
>"Roger, Commander. En route."

You and your team step out into the street. it's several blocks away to the Comm relay and starport, giving Henderson and his team plenty of time to power up the powerplant.

As you walk down the streets you notice... nothing. Things seem to be left exactly where they were. Car doors are open, not even a stray animal runs past.

That's why your entire team stops dead when you hear any noise. Open widows shuttering. Creaky signs. But nothing solid.

>"Henderson here, Boss. We've got hardhats on the floor, some abandoned tools, not a body in sight though. We're powerin' up now."

You make it to the Starport's front door. Without power it won't open. You can't do anything but wait in the howling wind. Minutes later the lights at the far end of the street turn on. Then closer ones, then the next ones, until it eventually reaches you.
>>
>>26156811
The door opens on it's own. You move in with your team, and you hear movement.

>"Don't move!"

Several CMC marines step out of the shadows of the starport, weapons trained on you. They're not Dominion and they're poorly armed so you have to assume they're local militia.

>"Who are you, what are you doing here, and did you turn the power on?"

The Banshee docks in atmo with the Hercules. The marines unload, and you board the Banshee. Mia poses the question to you.

>"How do we expect to find them, sir?"

>"I can sense it. Take off towards the colony. I'll navigate."

>"Yessir."

The Banshee screams towards the town. You direct her north, then east. Over the treeline you see a floating... net. Thing. It radiates power to you. Some sort of protoss structure you imagine.

>"Swing us over. If we can blow him up from the sky I'm going to do that."

You have no such luck, and the banshee's not equipped to deal with this floating ship. You take the ship down into the forest and step out. The soft chirp of birds is all you can hear as your team makes for the Protoss' ship.

As you step out, Mia steps out with you, carrying a personal C-14 variant, as she has no CMC.

>"What're you up to, Captain?"
>"Not sitting this one out, sir. Don't try and stop me."

As much as you don't want to risk your pilot, the truth is that everyone there is able to pilot a Banshee. You can sense she won't take no as an answer and don't press the issue.

You pass through the winding wilderness. You sense the Protoss ahead, and move forward slowly, the leaves and debris crunching under your feet.

You hear movement and your squad stops. You look around in front of you. Nothing on sensors...

>"Oy, uh, Delta. We lost Charlie."

You turn around and you're a squad member short. How!? He's in front of you! You hear the voice again.

>"It is inevitable, Terran. I promise you that you will not feel a thing. Lay down your weapons and submit to what must happen here."

Like hell. You're almost to the base of the structure. It grows increasingly dark as the massive ship blots out the sun. You see the clearing, bathed in blue light. Whiskey swaps out to his shotguns. Mia makes a vaguely religious gesture across her chest. November simply shakes his head and mutters a series of curses.

You take a deep breath. Good to know your crew is equally suicidal. You reach out to the ship for a mind to bring you up.

You are met by hundreds.

>"Come on then. I'm here. Bring me up."

In a tingly flash of blue light you are in the ship. Walls of gold and floors of blue energy. You are alone at the moment. That will not last long. None of them are hiding from you any more.

>"Henderson. Charlie. Can you hear me?"

Nothing.

You project your mind. You map the interior of the ship as quickly as you can. There's a lab with several tanks and containers, some of which are animals, but you can't properly identify them for some reason. There's so much... static... so much noise.

You then sense the bridge at the center of the ship.

It's just a question of where you want to go first, really.

Basically, we talked with the Murrican President, and she said she was on top of things political wise with the new planets in revolt. We set up a second base to mine, and set a leader there to keep things rolling while we were away. When we came to this dark colony, we went down to the surface, saw it was dark, had Henderson turn the power on and we met survivors. Survivors freaked out, Henderson went dark, so we went after him. You head for the medical labs. Your only objective is to recover your team and it seems like the most likely place.

>"Drop your weapons, Terran. You stand no chance here."

You round the corner. A Protoss floats above the ground. Several bolts of psionic energy blast past you, as you take aim. You're slow to take the shot, as you not only lack your psionic reflexes in his presence, but he's actively throwing you off. You miss by shooting wide a few times.

Luckily, Whiskey does not need to aim. He shoots the Protoss templar twice as he advances. He pumps the shotguns. The templar tries to stand. Two more shots bring it to the ground. He pumps the shotguns again. For a brief second, you think he's not going to shoot. He does. The kneecaps. He reloads again. A gut shot.

The Protoss groans in agony, the yell rips through your mind.

Whiskey shoots again.

He doesn't say a word. He just reloads.

He shoots again. He blows off the Templar's arm at the elbow and seriously damages the other arm's forearm. The Protoss continues to scream in pain.

He reloads.

>"Whiskey, god damnit!"

Mia steps forward and puts the Templar out of it's Misery with two rounds. He vanishes in a flash, whether dead or just teleported you can't say. Whiskey looks to Mia slowly.

>"I wasn't done yet."

Thud.

You turn around. You didn't sense it in all the action. The Templar went straight for November psionically.

He didn't stand a chance. His lifeless body falls to the floor. Blood pools around his head. Psionic feedback killed him instantly. It just took his body a few seconds to catch up.

You continue down towards the Medical labs, when you reach a junction. There's a sealed door. You place a D-8 charge on it when you sense... a lot of something.

Just as you blow the door open, at each other three entrances a large number of zealots can be heard charging at you. You are vastly outnumbered, and with their superior skills you don't stand a chance.

Mia steps forward and raises her rifle. The underslung bayonet swings out audibly.

>"What's the big idea, Captain?"

>"You two are the only two who stand a chance in here. I'll hold them as long as I can."

Whiskey sets a hand on her shoulder then pushes her back.

>"The difference is people care about you, and I can actually kill them. Go with Delta."

He raises his weapons in anticipation. The sound of metal and Protoss grunts grows louder.

>"I'll catch up."

You keep running. The sound of Whiskey's guns echos behind you, slowly replaced by the sounds of close combat, and silence.

As you reach the labs you see the holding pens and tanks. Some of them are alien fauna.

Some of them are the human colonists.

>"They're in Stasis. Start breaking them out."
>"How?"
You look around the room. There's a console at the center and you have D-8 charges.

It'll either kill everyone or free everyone. You figure you've taken worse odds than 50-50.

You consider your other options carefully. Explosives don't seem like the best bet immediately.

You try to break open the stasis chambers, but the crystal is too strong. You look over the console but you can't make sense of it between the Protoss runes and Protoss technology in general.

There's no immediate power to disable, and there's no visible seam between the floor and the stasis crystals. The entire system is so seamless you have no way to understanding it.

Time runs short, Several Protoss Zealots accompanied by a female Templar enter the room. You recognize the voice. She's the one that's been following your team this whole time.

You fire an EMP grenade at the Roach. It's hardened shell deflects it easily and it charges you down. It's rending talons shred armor, muscle, and bone as it tears you apart. Your last thoughts curse your stupidity for using a nonlethal round on a roach.

Slowly the material world comes back to you, but you still carry the scars of your poor decision. You lay in a pool of your own blood on the floor of this ship.

>"Careful with that one. She is Psionic. If they sense her we will have a larger swarm to deal with."

You heal your wounds using your telepathy. You quickly draw the pistol and bring it under one Zealot's chin and pull the trigger. He disappears in a flash of blue light.

You're not fast enough for the second one, however. He knew what you were doing before you did. Your knife twitches near his face as you struggle against his grip. You think quickly and punch him in the stomach. It doesn't do anything.

That's when you hear the shotgun. Then again. The zealot goes limp before disappearing as well. The Judicator seems to have disappeared, and Whiskey stands in her place. His helmet is gone, he has a rather nasty gash over one eye.

>"Is she still alive?"

It takes you a moment to realize who he means. Mia's lying sprawled out on the floor. You rush to her and her wounds on severe. You use the last of your energy to stabilize her, but she's still unconscious.

You sense... panic. Not from Whiskey, but the rest of the ship. You look up to him.

>"What did you do to them?"

>"My job."

He steps over to the console. He removes the bandolier of D-8 charges from his chest and sets them down on it. He sets the timer.

>"What are you doing!?"

>"Do you speak Khal'ai?"

>"No, but-"

>"Then we should get back."

You don't have any choice but to comply. You scramble out of the room with Whiskey, who's walking at a much slower pace. He stops outside the door. You can almost hear him count to three. As soon as the explosion goes off he enters the room again.

The Crystals are open. The colonists - what's left of them - are there and alive. Henderson stands up, coughing a few times. You don't recognize any of the people present as your marines.

That's when the siren sounds. You look to Whiskey.

>"I might've destroyed their power core."
>"We're still on the ship, Whiskey!"
>"I didn't expect that part to happen, if I'm perfectly honest."

You'll need an escape. Fast.

You don't encounter much resistance. Whiskey doesn't hesitate to shoot any fleeing Protoss however, even if they appear unarmed.

Especially if they appear unarmed...

The ship's stability continues to decrease. Large chunks of hallways crash down. Explosions wrack the walls. You eventually reach what you thought was a lab. Charlie is standing - bound rather - against an upright table. Several energy beams appear to be keeping her in place. Whiskey fires his EMP and they go down. Charlie immediately slumps to the ground. You hear another explosion, followed by radio.

Because you people can't handle a ground op to save your lives.

Tactical missteps mean people die.

Her eyes flutter. Her grip weakens. Yours tightens desperately.

>"Tell me about the battlecruiser, Charlie. What did we do?"

>"So... we go up a few floors... he's... running drills, or something... we toss it out the window... you tossed it... hit him... square in the jaw..."

She coughs again. You clutch her closer to your chest.

>"Negative damage! We can't get through, sir! I - I don't know what else we can do!"

>"We laughed... really hard... He didn't know who it was... That's..."

Her face goes more somber, as her eyes start to close.

>"...When we lost a lot of people in training... though."
>"Charlie? Charlie!? Please, no, stay with me. Please, please stay with me. Charlie. Please don't-"

>"This is purple one! All damage is negative, sir! We can't get through! The core's going to go critical any second now! What are our orders!?"

You don't care. Her breathing is shallow, and growing slower. You brush her hair from her face. Your HUD registers that it might be raining and your helmet might have a leak. Whiskey places a hand on your shoulder.

>"Sir!? Sir, we need orders! We need to evac now!"

>"Delta to Hercules actual. Break off and return all survivors to the Daluke. Tell the XO to remain a hero."

You press your forehead against Charlie's. You can hear Henderson's goodbyes to an unconscious Mia.

>"I know I'm not the best at goodbyes, but uh... You weren't so bad, really. In fact I'd even say you were downright good. If it weren't for all those comments about compensatin' I might just have loved you."

>"Like hell, Commander! Chewy, spool FTLs!"
>"Hercules Actual, the hell are you doing?"
>"Saving the captain! All hands brace for impact! Short range jump on my mark."

Before you even have a chance to object, he beats you to it.

>"Mark!"

The noise is indescribable. The Hercules tears through the mothership's hull faster than the speed of light. Everyone who was standing falls to the ground.

>"We're in the ship! Get everyone to us, Sir!"

A thin strand of hope pierces your heart. You pick up Charlie in your arms.

>"EVERYONE MOVE! NOW! GO!"

You charge forward. The empty, flaming ship poses a hazard that you don't have time for. Jagged metal rips your suit and burns you. You stumble into the open Hercules bay. How it'll get free is another question, but you have medics on board. You lay Charlie out on the deck and Jessie rushes forward. She's the Senior medic on this mission and represents Charlie's best chance.

>"Move back, move back!"
She injects Charlie with a reddish syringe at her wrist. A tube goes down her throat, and connects to one of the ports on Jessie's CMC. Whoever invented integrated life support is a Genius.

>"Everyone's onboard! Commander, we need you on the bridge."

There's nothing you can do here. The door starts closing. You run to the bridge.

>"Sir. Wraiths are free. We've lost the Banshee. We're stuck, right now. Damage is significant. We're going to make another short range jump. If we're lucky it'll put us into Orbit. If not..."

You're in orbit. Space sits before you. The ship is spinning wildly. Sensors read that multiple decks are venting air. Several crew casualties are already confirmed.

>"NUUUUAAAAAAAHHHH!"
>"Keep it together Chewy! Stabilize us with internal gyros! Clamp down that gravity! Emergency coolant shield on the reactor!"

You stare out the reactor, still not sure if you're alive or dead and just don't realize it yet. You see a large blue mushroom cloud on the planet's surface. That could've been you.

>"Damage control to deck two! Someone get that plugged! I've got armor coming free on the port side! Evacuate those compartments and seal it off1"

You head back to the bay. Jessie's still over Charlie.

The civilians are grouped in the hold. Most of the ones in the barracks appear to have thought the ones you rescued from the core were dead. Somewhat of a bittersweet reunion.

You approach the lead marine. He's had his CMC and C-14 confiscated by your crew, which is standard in this kind of situation.

>"So it was Protoss. But I think Zerg may've been involved. Tell me everything about what happened."

>"Well, few weeks back, old Fitzgerald started acting weirder than usual. He was always a weird guy, for years and years claimed he got captured by Zerg and they just let him go or something. I know what you're thinking, but he wasn't infested, he was just batty. So one day, he goes off more than usual, we get called in, he says he saw some kind of mutant overlord. We don't find jack or shit, obviously. Few days later he disappears. Then... people start acting weird. And they start to disappear, too. More and more of them. Eventually what was left of us cut the power and holed up in the starport on canned beans until you came. Whatever happened, something sabotaged all the vehicles. Everything, cars, ATVs, dropships. It took out the Comms, cut the cables, we couldn't contact anyone, we couldn't go anywhere. That's... it, really."
