When you least expect it, VALKRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack. While there, you also took care of a personal mission for Qyburn, got a new weapon called the Buzzbomb, recruited some new squad members, and helped Isolde regain her honor by defeating the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then returned to Gallia to help the Loyalists fight the GRA and rescue Archduchess Cordelia. You also finally decided to move on from your past and start a relationship with your longtime friend and XO, Sam. Now, you've been recruited by Lynch to destroy two Valkrur superweapons. You already managed to destroy Stonehenge, and all that is left is Excalibur.

Oh, and you asked Sam to marry you, and she accepted. Nothing possibly bad can happen from this, right?

Well, it was a bit of an understatement to say that Sam was in a pretty good mood by the the time it was time to leave for the front. However, when you told the rest of the Demons about it, they all chided you saying that pulling that stunt was just ASKING to get one or both of you killed because reasons. Well, screw em. You did what you thought was right.

Finally, your small ragtag convoy trundles up to the Federation staging area, just outside the Gallian border. Surprise was paramount, so the Federation higher ups were doing everything in their power to keep the Imperials from finding out about this buildup. Security was tight, and nobody was allowed in or out of the area at all.

"I wonder who they've got leading this offensive." Sam asks to no one in particular.

"Well, hopefully somebody halfway competent." You sigh. Honestly, Federation officers weren't that much different from Gallian ones. You had a 50/50 chance of getting a decent commander or a wildly incompetent one.

"Ah, the Demons. I suspected I'd see you here." A very familiar, and very tired voice reaches your ears.

All of the Demons turn and probably about half of their jaws drop in surprise at who they see.

"Freyberg?!" You blink.

"The one and only." The general sighs.

You know how in movies if someone says they're a week from retirement or it's their first day on the force they are going to die.

That's a deathflag, it's saying something, or putting an event into motion that indicates you're going to die. Like telling a girl you'll marry her, telling your son you'll be back home in time for Christmas, promising yourself that you got the ring and you'll propose the moment you get home, passing on your legacy to your student, that sort of thing.

"Damn, Freyberg, what the hell are you doing all the way out here? I thought you wanted nothing more than to stay down in Ustio."

"That was the plan." Freyberg says glumly. "Follow me."

You dismiss the rest of the Demons to take care of battle preparations while you and Sam follow Freyberg. He leads you to his headquarters, which right now is a giant, cobalt blue circus tent. There, you recognize a bunch of his junior officers, and you see a very familiar table with a bunch of maps of the surrounding area. Freyberg takes a seat at the table and sighs.

"Captain, you know those times where you can have too much success?"

"A bit."

"Well, when the Federation higher ups were deliberating on who to lead this new offensive, apparently I was on their radar thanks to what we did down in Ustio. And considering I'm one of the 'politically neutral' choices..."

"...so pretty much if this whole campaign goes balls up, they can just blame it on you." You finish.

"That's the blunt version, yes." Freyberg sighs.

"Well, I guess that's more reason for us not to screw it up." You nod. "What's the plan?"

"We've been scouting out the Imperials' defensive lines in the north." Freyberg points at one of the maps on the table. "It's heavily fortified, but thinly manned. No doubt because the bulk of their forces are down at the Round Table. That means if we're fast enough, we can punch a hole through their front defenses before they can get a chance to react. Then our second wave encircles and mops up the enemy forces the spearhead leaves behind."

"So you're pretty much turning the Imperials' tactics against them." You whistle.

"Well, they certainly worked." Freyberg nods. "On that point, since our history in Ustio, I've seen fit to give you a choice on your operation. You can be part of the spearhead to break through the Imperial defenses, or you can be part of the relief wave to mop up enemy forces."

Anybody of note we can be expecting defending?

What's their readiness level and how much do they know about the offensive?

I would like to have my mercs and a small force cause a diversionary attack, announcing our presence and drawing their attention, while the main attack pierces at a different point and performs a flanking and encircling maneuver, cutting them off.

"Well, you know us, Freyberg." You grin. "We'd accept nothing less than being on the front, where all the action is. People clean up OUR messes, not the other way around."

"I should've figured that." Freyberg laughs. "Well, if you're going to be leading the attack, I'll need to tell you something important first. I think you'll like it quite a bit."

Freyberg then gets up from his chair and motions for you to follow him. Both you and Sam exit the tent and he leads you to where the force's vehicles have been parked. You see rows and rows of M4s and Growlers. Almost uncountable. And not a single M3.

"We Ustians pride ourselves in only paying for the best equipment for our troops." Freyberg says, seemingly reading your mind. "You won't find a single M3 or bullet fucker in THIS army."

He then leads you to an extremely large olive drab tent. Even larger than the command tent.

"And here's the best part!" Freberg grins like a little schoolboy getting a present. He pulls back the tent flap and YOU start grinning like a little schoolboy with a present.

"Ugh. Boys." Sam shakes her head.

"Is... is that..."

"Yep." Freyberg nods. "It came at great personal cost, but we managed to get some of Emmeria's M5's shipped over. Armor twice as thick as an M4's, and with a 90mm gun that should put it on par with any Imp tank."

"Why don't we see any of THESE anywhere?" You gasp.

"Because there aren't any factories that can produce them in Europa, and nobody wants to pay to have these babies shipped over." Freyberg sighs. "But, considering our situation, I thought they'd be a wise investment."

"How many do you have?"

"Two hundred total. There will be a company of ten in the spearhead whose sole duty is to breach fortified positions and engage enemy armor. It's going to be your job to make sure they make it through in one piece."

>>26180277
"Can we have one?" You ask.

Freyberg laughs for what seems like a long time before bluntly answering.

"No."

"Awwwww, come on...!"

"Captain, you already have a perfectly usable heavy tank. Plus all these M5's are Ustian property. If I release one to you and something were to happen to it, all the responsibility would be on me!"

"Well, he was just joking, anyways!" Sam laughs awkwardly, trying to cover for your ridiculous request.

"Either way, you should get some rest." Freyberg says. "We're moving out first thing tomorrow morning. We'll be beginning the attack at dawn."

"We'll be ready." You assure him.

"Oh, and I almost forgot to mention. AIS sent commando teams ahead of the offensive to try and soften up enemy positions and sabotage their logistics. You might run into them, so keep an eye out for them, alright? I don't want to explain to Colonel Lynch how we accidentally blew up his men..."

To be fair, you'd be pretty amused to inconvenience Lynch at any turn, but then you remember his commandos were pretty cool dudes like Jack.

"I'll keep that in mind."

You night's sleep was dreamless, yet restless. More than once you're woken by Sam, worried over the tossing and turning and mumbling in your sleep. You just pass it off as pre-mission jitters, but you suspect it's got something to do with being on the doorstep of Karla's home. Your need for closure still subconsciously nagging at you.

A few hours later, you're already moving out with the main force. Happily enough, it seems that Colonel Chamberlain is leading the spearhead, meaning you at least get to work with somebody you're somewhat familiar with. You have one company of M5s and several platoons of M4s on the offense, with several thousand mechanized infantry for support. These guys were well equipped and had fresh experience defending Ustio, and they were eager to take the fight to the Empire.

>>26180784
You decide to let the Ustians take the lead on this one. This was their show, after all. Plus with all that heavy armor at their disposal now, they can afford to catch a few shells for you.

Finally, the pre-dawn gloom is interrupted by the muzzle flashes and the booming of cannons. However, just as quickly as it begins, everything becomes quiet again. Your end of the column keeps moving unimpeded. However, off to your right, you see a smoking ruin of a bunker, no doubt an observation post.

Before you know it, the Growler comes speeding back to catch up to your advance, pulling up right behind the Fenrir.

"Did you find anything, Elizabeth?" You ask.

"Well..." Elizabeth pulls out a burnt piece of paper. "I found this map. It's pretty burnt up, so it's not that much use, but I did find what seems to be a supply depot that might be worth checking out. It's a minor detour."

Well, when you inspect the spoils, you really don't find anything special. It's just a bunch of lance and small arms ammunition, several barrels of ragnite fuel, and a couple of kubelwagons. Nothing that you can't really buy in bulk back home. A bit disappointing but pretty much the norm for a lightly guarded frontline supply cache like this.

You radio back to the rear line forces and give them a heads up about the position of the supply depot, so they can handle it later. Getting back on mission, you and the Demons pack up and move to catch up with the spearhead.

When you finally do catch up, you see the spearhead has finally made contact with the enemy, with shells and machine gun fire being thrown in all directions. Like an unstoppable force of nature, the line of M5s trundles forwards, shrugging off bullets and lance rockets alike while systematically demolishing bunkers and MG nests with their heavy 90mm guns. The M4s stick the flanks, watching for any potential ambushes.

"Oh shit, we got trouble!" Brillant yells as he and Tarin come sprinting back your way, diving into the nearest crater. The Growler comes vaulting over the edge of the hill, driving as fast as possible as well. Looking at where they were running from, you see that the Imps have organized quite the counter attack. You see a squadron of four medium and one heavy Imp tank with two squads of accompanying infantry approaching, a mix of scouts, shocktroopers, and lancers. Julia's strikes the heavy, causing the entire vehicle the shudder. It's left track, as well as the entire drive train connected to it, literally disintegrates. However, despite the grievous damage, the heavy tank is still able to fight.

Headcase is more successful, drilling a 88mm shell right under the turret of one of the medium tanks, causing the entire thing to pop off. Sam and Isolde both team up on the second medium, punching its armor and causing it to smoke heavily.

Alek tries to aim for a lancer, but only succeeds in making him duck for cover.

Meanwhile, the rest of you unload automatic fire at the Imps, downing five and wounding another two.

Unfortunately, the two M4s fire their 75mm cannons and miss, their shells sailing past the approaching armor formation.

The Imperials return fire.

(cont)
>>
>>26184627
The heavy tank retaliates, firing of its cannon and hitting the Fenrir head on. The shell deflects off the front armor plate, sailing into the air and burrowing a deep dent. Likewise, a medium tank fires off a shot at Kilroy, and the shell bounces off its reinforced front armor as well.

However, one of the M4s isn't so lucky, and it takes a shell in the side. It doesn't explode but you can see smoke belching out of it.

Several lance rockets streak out in a random spread, but fail to hit anything. However, from trails, you count at least six lancers.

And the Imp's hail of bullets stitch Sam and Heloise's positions. Sam grunt as her plate armor catches a few rounds and Heloise instinctively drops to the ground when a rifle round grazes her calf.

You can keep firing back, but then again, that M4 crew might need help, and Sam and Heloise look fine, but might need some first aid anyways.

Under the combined firepower of Fenrir, Kilroy, the M4, and Sam and Isolde, the remaining Imp tanks explode in a shower of fire and debris. The Growler's rocket tubes exact a massive toll on the Imp infantry, sending men flying in all directions.

Unfortunately, your attempts to focus on the lancers largely fails. Only one falls in the combined weight of your fire.

With their ambush defeated, the Imps begin to fall back, using the burning shells of their own tanks as cover. However, the pause just long enough for one last parting salvo.
>>
>>26185498
Alek and Isolde both take minor wounds from the hail of bullets. However, fortunately for you, the lancers seem to be just really poor shots, as their second salvo is a failure as well.

You see that the crew of the damaged M4 has managed to successfully bail from their vehicle, and move off to a safer location for the second wave to pick them up.

Also, from the sounds of it, the M5s have already smashed through the first defensive line and are moving on.

Not gonna win against the main force with what we have, though I suppose it could work as a pincer attack if the M5 blitz already facing them
>>
>>26185577
You pause briefly to catch your breath and as well as treating your squad's wounds. So far the injuries have been relatively light, and you all still have a good supply of ragnaid left. Ammo is a slightly different matter. While you still have a healthy amount, the Stig has already used up his rocket tubes, which he had already ejected from the vehicle to get rid of dead weight.

Hope that your supply train will be able to keep up with your advance, you head off again, trailing behind the wake of destruction the M5s leave behind. At this point you are well inside Belka, According to the maps, there's one more major defensive line and then a fairly large town that will be used as a staging point for future offensives. It was imperative that town be taken before the day was over or your entire force would be badly exposed.

The M5s have already begun engaging the second line of defense. However, this line has heavy anti tank guns ready and waiting, which are slowing down the M5s progress.

"Captain, we're going to need some help neutralizing some of those guns." Chamberlain calls out over the radio. "Are your men up for it?"

I'd rather not. It would help us close on the AT guns sure but we also wouldn't be able to fire on them and tanks are very vulnerable to infantry in close-combat.

After a few minutes of waiting, you see Brillant poke his head out from the trees and motions for you to move forward. Following him, he leads you to a small, camouflaged observation post dug into the ground, no doubt to spot for artillery. Inside, you see two dead Imps, their throats slashed or broken.

"Where's Tarin?" You ask.

"She's scouting the tunnel." Brillant points to a opening at the back of the OP. "We suspect it leads straight to the defense line."

"Problem is, we can't exactly fit our armor through it." Sam points out.

At that moment, Tarin emerges from the tunnel, knife and pistol in hand. "Tunnel looks clear. It leads straight to a trench system that runs along the defense line."

>We'll assault through the tunnel and call in the armor later.

Also remember, we only need to destroy enough guns for out tanks to get through and start blowing the other guns and support out infantry.

"We're going in." You say, crouching so you can fit into the tunnel. "Tell Julia and Headcase to link up with the main armored force. We'll call them in when we need them."

And so you and the Demons carefully crawl your way through the dark tunnel. It's only a handful of feet long, so the trip doesn't take that long. Soon, you're back in the daylight inside a large trench network. In the distance, you can hear the booming of large caliber guns. In response, Ustian artillery starts falling along the line.

"I think we should stay in the trenches for now." Sam frowns. "I don't really want to get killed by Freyberg's own men."

"There's two fortifications we'll have to pass through before we reach the first gun position." Tarin says, pointing down the trench. "I have no idea what's in them. Could be anything."

>We'll risk it and charge over the top. We'll get there faster.

"We'll go through the trenches. No sense in getting blown up by friendly artillery." You say.

The rest of your squad nods and you all stack up on the nearest bunker. You and Ramirez take point, with the others standing back. You get ready to kick the door down, Var mk2 ready and primed to launch a grenade inside. Ramirez takes position to the side of the door, and he activates his underslung flamethrower. You both nod to each other. Before you kick the door down.

The first bunker appears to be manned by just a dozen men. They're caught by surprise as both a grenade and flamethrower burst through the door, showering them with flame and shrapnel. Five men are instantly cut down or roasted alive, but the remainder quickly react, taking cover and opening fire at the door.

You try to dive to the side the moment you launch your grenade, but you catch two bullets in your chest before you can get clear. You drop on your back, clearly winded from the impacts. Sam rushes over to check on you, and you can see the the panic on her face replaced with relief when she sees you're not seriously hurt.

The rest of your squad piles in to try and root out the remaining Imperials inside.

The bunker is quickly and swiftly cleared out. One good frag lance and some more flamethrower handle the job perfectly.

At this point you're back on your feet, brush off the ruined trauma plates. Well, here's to hoping you don't get shot in the chest again, or things might not go so well for you next time.

Following the same drill as last time, you prepare to breach the second bunker.

Fortunately, this bunker doesn't seem to be heavily manned. By all appearances, it's probably just a supply cache. All you have to deal with are a pair of easily neutralized guards.

You finally reach bunker housing one of the heavy guns. It's essentially just a large anti tank cannon housed in an elevated battlement. The continuous booming as it lays down a blanket of fire drowns out any sounds of your approach, and the crew is completely oblivious to your presence.

Now, judging by what you see, a lance shot or a few grenades would be enough to knock out the gun. However, you could try and risk capturing it and turning it on the second gun emplacement, a few hundred feet further down the trench.

Unfortunately, you're approach isn't as stealthy as you hoped it would be. One of the gunners turns around and catches sight of you approaching. He quickly warns his comrades and they turn to face you, drawing their sidearms.

Well, you could just shoot them, but you'd risk damaging the gun if you did that, since they were standing right next to it. The only other alternative would be to try and charge them.

Well... that was a lot of worrying over nothing. The three of you literally slice and dice your way through the crew. You nearly cleave one of them in half with the Var mk2, while Tarin effortless stabs her knife through another man's heart. Ramirez physically picks up the last man and tosses him off the battlement. His scream is cut short by the sudden impact with the ground.

Meanwhile, Heloise and Arthur manage to hijack the the gun and figure out how it works. The turn it to face the second gun position and fire. Considering it was a static position, and at this close range, it was impossible to miss. The second gun explodes in a puff of smoke.

With the guns down, the M5s push forward again, steamrolling over anything in their path. Pretty soon, they break through the second the defensive line and manage to exit the forest, reaching the vast open plains on the other side. And there, just in view was the day's final objective, the town of Fardan.

Unfortunately, at this point, Belka's people have called for protection and Belka had answered. Standing between you and the town is a large column of Imperial armor. However, unlike the armor you've seen before, these tanks are all in various colors and heraldry, which meant only one thing.

The Knights were here.
