What kind of shit scares you the most /tg/? I'm not talking bad GMs or rolling poorly on a character you're excited about, I'm talking shakes you to the core, hair-standing-up kind of pure fear. I'm working on a modern sci-fi setting and I'd love to melt my player's brains.

For me, it's skin-burrowing insects(which it would be tasteful of you to NOT post pictures of) and the emptiness of space, especially deep space. They're fairly different concepts, but I find them both terrifying.

Quick question: have any of you watched the series Falling Skies? Because the producers have keyed in on those things which seem to squick us all:

This may sound weird as the blindness anon, but if you inflict blindness on them. Blind them IRL, not permantly, but with bandages or something. Some anon did something similar in a game he ran. They were on mars and it was a horror game and he gave them helmets+gas masks to help with the feeling of being in a spacesuit.

also it encourages roleplay

I'm horribly terrified of the wilderness at night. I go hunting in the fall. Leaving the tent to take a shit or piss is a bit of an ordeal each time. Pick related, but not quite accurate to what it looks like at night.

Murky water where I can't see shit bugs the crap out of me. Would prefer to swim in tropical waters.

I can usually handle the dark in most cases, but I get wary when I'm wandering around alone at night.
>>
>>26185890
This was actually a plan of mine, I read that a few years ago and have been inspired ever since, among other things. I have several gas masks I'm going to use when they're suited up and have devised hand-drawn puzzles that I ripped from children's game books, for such things as ship repairs for EVAs and hacking doors (which will be good fun when they're given a time limit.)

To set the mood, I like to make the whole world chaotic and nonsensical. Doors that lead to room that couldn't exist, rational people ignoring your questions, stuff like that. It puts the players on tilt, and makes the real scary stuff more effective.

The perfect hunter.

You know the nightmare, you're running from /something/, but you don't dare stop to make certain what it is. It's quiet, it's after you, and it's catching up. You're isolated, any companions you may have had are no longer a factor, just the encroaching darkness pursuing you.

This might be great later in the campaign. It's going to start innocently enough, with 5 players making their astronauts and learning each other's skills and such, and then during selection for the HORIZON-1 mission, the very first manned mission to deep space, only 1 PC will be selected. Skip forward a bit and the PCs will be there at launch day, wondering what the hell is going on, when the HORIZON-1 blows up on the pad, killing all the astronauts on board, including their dear friend who they just spent a few hours getting to know. I've already made arrangements with my decoy PC and he is more than happy to throw this curve ball right off the bat. Things only get more unfortunate from there.

I'm going to be throwing this at my players eventually, too. One of the most horrific consequences of FTL Travel is the time-dilation. By the time they make it back to Earth, if they even do, everyone they know will be dead or dying, the world will have changed without them, and they will all have been forgotten. I can't imagine dealing with a paradigm shift like that in my life.
>>
>>26186271

A question: how do you handle psychoactives, disassociatives, and all those other life events that drag your psyche out of your meat-body?
>>
>>26186823
They alter perception, not reality.
So it only feels like that.
>>
>>26186891

But the fear is specific -- perception and reality desync. I can't hear, or I can't see, or what I believe I experience is not real. The alteration of perception IS the alteration of reality to someone who has no other forms of input.
>>
>>26186823
I had an alcoholic delusion once... the first time I had anything more than a six pack and some sake.

Its was sometime around 2014, the house I was in was just dressed up to look like the one in my memory, built over time from the scraps they drew out over the weeks and months of psychoactive induction, hypnotic suggestion, and outright asian murder-torture techniques.

My arms and legs were gone, genitals too, drawn and nearly quarter by chains attached to my stumps, infection slowly eating away at badly done surgical stitching.

And they made me relive everything, childhood to this very moment, running through it again and again to get every detail right, pick out every last ounce of information. They wore their faces, friends family, co-workers, strangers I'd passed maybe once in my life; walking around my captive position, re-enacting the most insignificant events. The night of the delusion they did something wrong, my body's way of rationalizing the shift in perception, brining my reality to the fore, casting away my recreated life and throwing the danger of my situation into stark relief.

They panicked "It's just a dream," I told them how I knew they were fake, everything was gone, they just wanted the codes, I can't remember what for, they didn't know I couldn't let them know, "you're having a nightmare," I told them I'd burn down this fake house, tear off their fake faces, ruin their real ones "wake up," bite them to death the moment I was free

"it's not real," back in the house were I was suffering from a night terror and sleep paralysis, my heart was beating to a marathon's pace for an hour or more, consciousness backriding on the semi-aware notions of the dream, "go back to sleep," twisting reality and fantasy into a terrible amalgam, wondering if I was just saying these things or I wasn't in control of my mouth as it ran on and spun a lurid tale that I believed and feared to be true

I still don't know which is real and which is fake.

I'm enlisting, a long hard road, years of my life for a dream, my only passion- and then this... nightmare. I've been treating both as real and fake, watching everything I read, do, look at, especially what I say to others. The codes could be anything in a dreamscape, every detail matters. I've had other dreams, immediately after the incident, being rescued, my captors gunned down or routed from this dung heap I've been stashed in, body repalced by surgical steel and bioplastics. I even had a daughter via converted bone marrow, a miracle of medicine that doesn't exist here. She was beautiful. But I don't know that's the case, it could be a trick, I still wake up here. I don't dream, barely sleep, my memories are shot, can't recall the last hour let alone yesterday. And the nagging doubt at the back of it all, an alcoholic delusion only occurs after years of heavy abuse. I still don't know which is real and which is fake.

I think I'll write a script.
>>

body horror really fucks with my players. A couple of examples:

skin-burrowing insect gets into something. For an example for the players, let's say a horde of the things get into an animal or a player who fucked up or something. Then they change him. Cause his skin to form lumps and eventually entirely new muscle tendons, or the bone structure is rearranged and fucked with until the humanoid is so disfigured, you can only guess that it was only around 23% human before the transformation.

Also, something that just ocurred to me- having something inside of you at all. For instance, I was running a fantasy campaign and this one guy was possessed by an imp. I was trying to think of a unique way to have a demon physically embody itself, so the character puked out the rotting black insides of his stomach lining, and then the black, half-rotten gunk (he was also undead) bubbled, boiled, and formed into the guy's imp.

So yeah, having living things inside of you in general will fuck with people.

We could just be another manifestation of the interrogation, you know. Everyone is suspect. Everything is suspect. No records, no journal entries, no computer files are safe, maybe not even his own thoughts are internal. Anything he says, does or thinks could be an external dialogue with Them, and that's an information risk.

The only real persons you could trust to be your own id would be those willfully obstructing the progress of the narrative, ruining your fictional life and throwing their gleaned data into disarray and doubt.

Taken seriously, the best safeguard is a hermetic lifestyle, but then that's more or less retreating into a comatose state. However, you can't ever really trust anything at all ever again, you're stuck here, defending information that might not even be real from enemies that don't exist. And everything I say to convince you that this is real might just be a trick by Them.

That's a delusion that can't be beat, sirs.

OP here. I remember when I used to go camping I would be scared to death to use the bathroom at night. There was one time when I woke up, alone in my consciousness and covered by nothing but the stars (it was great weather and we had set up a tarp nearby, in case the weather got bad.) I lazily wandered down a small hill we were camping next to and started relieving myself into a small bush. And then it happened.

I started to realize that, all around me, was the noise of movement. Some fast, skittering like movements above my head, and other slow, distant ones that revealed to me all of the life that surrounded my small, immobile frame. As time ran out on my act I grew more and frightened, because I realized I didn't want to move anymore. When I stopped, I zipped up my pants notch by notch, slower than I ever had before, and then began my trek back up to the campsite. The painfully crunching leaves seemed to upset the darkness, which made me walk even slower, until finally, wonderfully, I returned back to my family. Easily one of the most frightening moments of my young life.
>>
I've been running a campaign loosely themed on horror. My players were dicking around in these haunted woods with this beat to shit old iron golem. I managed to get them separated, lost, and suffering from unique nightmarish visions in the middle of the night. On top of that, I told the cleric that the golem was always staring just off to his right. Even when the cleric was out of sight, the golem would keep pivoting to look in the exact same spot relative to him. They wasted detect magic spells trying to find what it was that was behind the cleric. I was just fucking with him and there was nothing there, but it really helped to visibly unsettle him IRL.

Even worse, the human psyche NEEDS human socialisation to remain even remotely sane. Who are the only people with which this guy has contact?

That's right, the various manifestations of people-in-memory acted out by Them.

Write that script, this thing is just bending my mind contemplating it. Oh, and watch out for everything you write in there, it might give Them what they want and then it's game over, man, game over.

Loss of touch with reality. Specifically the inability to validate if what you are experiencing is the real thing ala coma dream, Ghost in the shell esque faked memories, etc. The one part where that one guys entire past was wiped and replaced was so horrifying. He did all that shit for a wife that never existed.

Parasite turning you into a reproductive hive. Also, there was this one travelogue I read a while back about these amazon explorers that had maggots burrowing in the flesh around the elbow. They'd have to wait for one to get close and try to painfully squeeze it out before it burrowed back into them.

Being assimilated into something, especially involving body horror like being forcibly turned into a cyborg or something.

Being immortal and being trapped somewhere, especially underground like being buried alive. Also being immortal and tossed into space or into the ocean depths, constantly drowning or experiencing suffocation.

Being captured and inslaved. Remember that episode of Batman the Animated series where Bruce goes undercover and get's put to work in the slave/prisoner place? Or Fallout 3 and the Pitt dlc. That shit makes me uneasy in a deeply primordial way. Busting out of the Pitt with guns ablazing was like being able to breath again.

On the flip side of all that one of my favorite things is a good deep mystery. The thought of humanity finding an actual alien artifact and just not understanding it at all gives me chills in a good way. If we ever found a monolith floating in space and skeletons on mars i'd be so happy even if we didn't figure out the reasons behind it.

Imagine a box, OP. It's rectangular and perfectly fits your dimensions. Now imagine that this box is filled with about 12 inches of water at the bottom, barely enough to get your legs wet. You look into the box, or maybe you're cleaning it, and you fall in. Not only do you fall in head first, but you fall in with your arms pinned to your body. Constricted by the walls you can't move your arms up to lift your body and your head is stuck in a small pool of water. You shake all you want, but the box wont topple. You are drowning and there is nothing you can do but writhe ineffectually and swallow the water... until you die.

I can't pinpoint many fear, OP. But this is one thought that always manages to freak. me. out.

Never, ever let your players understand what horrible thing you are sending at them.
If it's a monster from SPEEEEESSSSSSSS, don't go outright and say it. It's just some thumping coming from outside the ship, some hours they don't remember, a crewmember they could have sworn was behind them a second ago.

Something explodes into the side of the ship. And then deathly silence. Radios play nothing but a prerecorded loop telling the crew to stay calm. Flashlights stop working, and the players have to don spacesuits in order to breath. There is a hiss, and the artificial gravity stops working, sending the bodies of former crewmembers drifting up from out behind things, scaring the shit out of the players.

Maybe the PCs investigate an alien ruin. Have part of the ruin be way too damn big. Like, so big that the darkness swallows up their flashlights and renders radio communication with the outside impossible. I've heard about spelunkers IRL that freak out when they come upon impossibly huge, black caverns. That's scary.
>>
Undermining anything generally assumed reliable and central to human existence.

Society, gravity, causality, physical integrity, ... just attack whatever your players respond to, each person has their own fears.

Alright, some examples....

The fear of falling up into the sky, unable to stop, possibly hanging from a failing rain gutter - the wrong way.

The fear that anything you touch crumbles or gets squished. Even the most careful brush rips handles out of doors and collapses walls.

Loss of dimension - being disproportionate, bloated like the Michelin man, with stubby arms like a Tyrannosaur, or with extremities so long they become impossible to lift.

Being trapped in your own body through paralysis or possession.

Loss of a body part or function. Can be an ear or a toe, a kidney, or a brain lobe, hell, even the ability to see red - it's gone forever.

The loss of any intimacy or human relatability - there is a disease where people stop recognizing their closest relations and think they're impostors. Everybody must be conspiring against you.

The mites and microbes that naturally live on and in your body start eating it.

Everybody stares at you. Always. With a stern look.

Everybody has a slug on their head that only you can see.

Even a simple stutter can be scary when you never had any speech problems and suddenly can no longer express yourself when excited.
>>
Being lost. I mean, completely lost, no idea how to get back home, no idea where you are... absolutely stranded...

We're on the same wavelength, definitely. It's up to the players to find out what the hell is going on, nothing is ever "a monster" or "an alien," it's a shape, a sound, or an extra, fuzzy shadow amongst them.

I've also had an idea for ancient alien ruins, too, much like yours. The team will be exploring a large jungle where the ship AI, NARVOS, detected a gravitational anomaly or whatever the fuck. I'll ask the astronauts what order they want to walk in, for added suspense, and whoever gets last will end up being trapped behind an invisible force field after a while of wandering (with alien forest sounds being played to give it more atmosphere). Suddenly, the ground beneath the last astronaut will illuminate in a circular, runic pattern, and the ground beneath them will drop an impossible height into a massive, obsidian cavern, perhaps with its own biosphere. What lies there is still up to discussion.

Mah niggah!

Fuck...needles...

I hate spiders, but I can deal with them, albeit like a girl

I hate flying, but enough vodka and I'm fine

I hate drowning/suffocation, but I have overcome the instinctual fear to learn how to calm myself

But needles, mother fucking needles, even seeing them and I want to nope the fuck out of the 5mile radius. And the worse thing is, no matter how much you clench your eyes and no matter how much you drink or how hard you think of something else, you still feel it; slicing, piercing, sliding and scratching its way under you skin, through your muscle, and once it's there, that's even worse. Your body know something's not right, and it constantly tells you, you feel it, this invading "tube". Then the blood starts leaving, you feel it draining out, you feel the tube sucking it free

Fuck. Needles.

Elongated faces and sharp teeth are characteristics of things such as lions, wolves and bears. Of course we're going to be afraid of fucking bears.

And someone who is pale with sunken eyes is obviously sick.

Even beyond that. You ever have somebody fuck up? It goes in, just a little too deep, and hits bone. Scraping across it, the thin metal carrying the vibrations up into your muscles, the sharp irregular patterns as it catches and frees itself from the minute irregularities of your bone.
That is literally all I can think about every time I have to deal with needles.

Rust, decay, and deep filth do wonders against my sanity.
I had a nightmare once where broken rebar, sticking jagged from a shattered concrete wall, was bending and warping while reaching for me, and I was slipping, sliding in the most putrid muck you've ever smelled.

I have always had this falling asleep nightmare about a nail sticking out of the wall in my bathroom: About tripping and catching my eye on the thing. It was never a real fear, just this panic fantasy that sometimes comes over me when I fall asleep.

That nail is gone since I was a kid, now it's usually heights and falling. Not the actual fall, just the going over the edge part.

If I wanted to plague a PC with that I would have him hallucinate cliffs and chasms in front of him out of nowhere sometimes when he takes a step.

Death. Pretty much the only thing that scares me is the threat of my life ending.

Well guess what.

You'll die anyway.

You're already dead. This is what the other side looks like. But what did the first side look like? I wonder.

Are you me?

Except for me, any eyeball prodding freaks me out more than the deeps. Its why I can't wear contact lenses. I'll wear glasses any day of the week.

I'm really uncomfortable in water I can't see the bottom of, but it's less an irrational fear and more it creeps me the fuck out thinking about it, which I inevitably do.

Immortality. Like balls to the Wall immortality. Imagine outliving your loved ones, nations, earth, the universe itself just drifting mindlessly for eternity. And responsibility that scares me to.

Blinding myself. This was because of something that happened to me a long time ago in 8th grade Algebra.

I got this fancy ass metal mechanical pencil. 0.5 lead. I won it at some stupid 'Rally raffle!' thing for my middle school, trying to get the kids to give a shit about our school.

Anyway, I'm in Algebra. I write out an answer on a Scantron-we were doing some stupid 'Accelerated Math' bullshit where as you just fill out scantrons and get stuff wrong until you get it right with the most minimalistic lesson possible after which the teacher sits on their lazy ass the rest of the period.

Anyway, as I'm erasing the answer, I lean in to blow the eraser shavings away and I feel an urge coming on. I have to sneeze.

I do so, my head rocking forward and the led and metal digging in under my right eye, cutting a small scar that still barely visible today. It's not jagged or cool or anything, just a mark on my skin. I had to ask to go to the nurses' office to clean it and, after I pulled the pencil away, I realized that the lead I had poking out to write with broke off under my skin. I had to push at my cheek upwards until it-and a bunch of blood-finally agreed to be pushed out, then slap a bandaid on that bitch and go back to class.

If I had been holding that pencil tip half an inch higher, I'd be blind in my right eye right now. That was some scary shit, /tg/. Ever since then, I don't like anything getting close to my eyes.
>>

Pencilguy here. I meant to just put 'Being blinded' at the start of that. 'Blinding myself' was what almost happened in the story. I'm not afraid I'll blind myself every time I hold something in my hands. That was a hurr on my part.

Seconding this. If they know what it is. odds are they can kill it. Even if that's really hard. And they can kill it they wont be afraid of it.

For some who have seen too much, death in the fangs of a tiger would be a blessing.
If only they were allowed to die...
