You are Percius Aurex, Captain of a raider-class pirate vessel. Formerly the 14th son of a noble family, you fled that life in search of adventure and to escape your status as a political pawn. You've just completed an expedition into the forbidden system of Vectes, sending your men into a severed aft section of an Imperial cruiser. Good men lost their lives in an accident, and you decided to complete the few tasks you'd begun and head on to a planned meeting in a nearby system instead of lingering in the forbidden system.Currently your ship is docked above the planet Folkvangr under an offer of truce, and you sit across from the Rogue Trader Alexander Kerr. With negotiations over the ransom of the sororitas complete, you shifted the conversation toward trade of a more legitimate nature. Your wolf-pack is to regroup above Caseblanco in 114 days and travel to the neighboring Sector Corgus."I have no interest in equipping a pirate vessel with arms, even if my people could spare them. The other goods you seek are possible, though I'm unsure as to your inquiry over millinery products." Lord Kerr's expression remains professional, despite his next words. "Such a question is quite... peculiar."You're fairly certain that Ana or Tes is nodding behind you.

>>26192460Kerr regards you for a moment, his left thumb and index finger slowly rubbing together as he considers your proposal. "I can accept such a deal, but I'll be taking the risk and responsibility of moving cargo stolen from the Iron Monks of all parties. I've never been a fan of or loved by them, but possessing the stolen wealth of Arch-Cardinal Kest" He pauses, his hands raising and making a miming a shrug. why don't we try to sell the saphires little by little?unless we really need something, they should be sold for best the best possible price!
I feel like we need to raid a few more ships so we have some deniability as to where we got the gems before we sell anymore.
>>26192300sounds good. shame about not wanting to sell the meltas, but understandable.... maybe we could find a corrupt supply officer who would be willing to 'lose' a cargo of them in exchange for some of the Sapphires or thrones....

"I believe I'll pass upon your offer, Lord Kerr. My minor eccentricity with fine products of Millinery does occasionally demand that I squeeze the most profit possible out of goods.""We all have our little weaknesses." Your host smiles slightly as if recalling a particular weakness of his own, but soon reverts to his more serious expression. "If the business of trade is concluded, I'm afraid we have other matters that are less pleasant. You've come into possession of a ship that was run by Captain Menexel. The man served beside my father in the Third Crusade and worked with our Dynasty to help rebuild this world. I request that you turn over the personal effects of Captain Menexel and those of his wife, in addition to the cargo he carried for me.">Orders?

A large desk in the corner is covered in what appear to be journals and unrolled maps. To your left, a deceptively plain bunk is clearly more luxurious than it would have you believe. The real treasures, however, are likely to be the wash room that seems to contain a large tub and a paired set of carved wooden wardrobes. Almost trembling with excitement, you wonder where his uniform hat is...You search the area around and even below the bunk itself for the Captain's stash of hats, but only find a collection of journals. Several of them are stained with blood and oil.
>>26193127but didn't we take a closer look at the journal while in warp-transit? If my memory serves me, they were coded

"I'll have my people awaiting you at your ship, Captain Aurex. If you come across more souls in need of rescue, please keep Folkvangr in mind."Departing Kerr's company, you find a white-robed member of the Mechanicus and two older women awaiting you at the bottom of the gangway to your ship. "Captain Aurex? Magos Oret. I shall be verifying the cargo for Lord Kerr." Various mechadendrites dance about the Magos, though one seems to have spotted Keller and Advinessa and returns their gaze up the gangway itself. "I assume the late Captain stored the cargo in the officer's smuggling compartment? I know the location well and do not require your guidance.""I believe I'll walk with you, Magos Oret. Advinessa seems to be enraptured, while yourself and Keller simply nod and allow the majority of the information to go flying over your head. Arriving just beyond your quarters, the Magos stops and motions to a small, innocuous maintenance hatch. "Captain Aurex, I presume you have the key to your quarters?"Placing your hand upon the hatch, a soft chime sounds from within and the section of wall behind you begins to withdraw. "We'll take the warp lanes. Better to lose time and travel through calm warp space. Elise, Erin, prepare the ship for departure and get us to our hunting grounds. I'll see off our guest." Your officers nod and depart the plotting room behind you, scattering to go about their business. Alarms sound as you travel to the gangway, finding Ana beside a calm Sister Laurent. "Captain Aurex." Tight-lipped as ever, this one."The Emperor works in mysterious ways, does he not, Sister? Do look after Sister Jessira, and may we meet again under better circumstances." With a flourish, you sweep your hat from your head and hold it over your heart while your left hand gently grasps hers and raises it. "Fare well, Miss Laurent. It was a pleasure to have you grace my ship and myself with your presence."She slaps you. "If we meet again, Captain Aurex, I intend to kill you for your crimes." As several of your armsmen walk past with the gold bars, you motion that the Sister may depart. Ana's smug grin and eyes fall upon you as the bulkhead begins to close. "Does that mean she likes you, Captain?""I am ze locksmith of love, no?"
>>26212755Your ship burns hard as it departs Folkvangr Station, the trio of escorts departing shortly behind you and following at a comfortable distance until your ship prepares for warp travel. Time seems to jump due to the short nature of your jumps, causing a minor bit of warp sickness among the crew, but nothing that is worth concern. The sixth jump sees your ship exit within the gravity well of the system, a thundering crash sounding throughout the vessel as gravity pulls at the forward portions of the vessel before the aft is clear of the warp. The damage is minimal, but the experience is one you'd prefer to never repeat again.Navigator Erin begs your forgiveness for her error, offering to halve her next share of loot as penitence. Concerned your officer is suffering from exhaustion, you order her to rest while Kihomi pilots the vessel from the system's gravity well. Once more your ship eventually tears back into reality at the edges of DI-103. A small convoy of several ships heads toward the opposite edge of the system, too numerous and distant for you to intercept before they jump out.Elise and Advinessa study the auger readings as they filter in, searching for features to use as part of the planned ambush.>System features>Outer Reaches: 2 asteroid clusters>Habitable Zone: 3 rocky planets, 1 asteroid cluster, 1 asteroid belt>Inner Cauldron: 4 rocky planets, Solar Flares
>>26212771"I doubt any ships will dive the Inner Cauldron to traverse the system, they would be adding too much time to their journey in most cases. The clusters in the Outer Reaches and the features of the Habitable Zone will likely be our best bets, and we can make a silent run from them to strike prey that passes too close. On the other hand, using them could mean that we're out of position to intercept the vessel we want." Elise sighs, her fingers playing with her earlobe nervously. "What do you think, Captain?">Orders?
Did we get anything done on the trip?I think we still aren't done exploring the ship, mapping everything out and and cataloging it.Anyway, the outer reaches are where ships come in and out of warp, right? That's when ships are at their most vulnerable, so I suggest we set up shop there.

>>26212838>exploring the ship, mapping everything and cataloging it.Your ship is 1.7 km and literally a maze of machinery and compartments. Some vessels are known to have literal ecosystems in the bilge areas or compartments long sealed from the rest of the ship by battle damage or repair teams. You'd have to put it into dry dock and literally strip it to the bare spine to fully explore it.As is, there is a small chance something from a pre-set list is found at random intervals. [Kerr's offer was a minor quest reward for following two hooks]Inner Cauldron: the subjective 'hot' zone of a star, usually too hot to support life.Habitable Zone: the 'sweet spot' where liquid water is likely to exist upon worlds orbiting the starOuter Reaches: often the largest zone, it is everything beyond the habitable zone within the star's gravity well.Ships generally exit the warp on the edges of the Outer Reaches. In this system, most ships will have to traverse the gravity well of the star in order to safely and easily jump the next leg. This also allows their warp drives and Gellar fields to be inspected between jumps, and for navigators to get some rest.Where exactly a ship exits the warp is effectively random except in the case of the most skilled of navigators.
>>26212878There are two clusters roughly opposite each other in orbit of the star.
>>26213001>You'd have to put it into dry dock and literally strip it to the bare spine to fully explore it.We'll get to that part eventually, but making sure that everything available to us is accounted for is a good start, right? If nothing else, we can have ship exploration as a task for whatever idle personnel we might have at the moment. Like the armsmen. When they aren't training, have them explore along with a techpriest or two.We also need to set up training programs and stuff. To train generic crewmen and slaves into armsmen, trained crewmen and stuff. And the techpriests are welcome to take servants for evaluation too. Hopefully, they will find some potential tech adepts that way.Stuff like that is what I mean when I say we should do things during warp travel.

True armsmen are separate from your crew, as they're constantly training across the ship instead of running it. You can create conscript armsmen, but expect problems.>techpriestsMost techpriests have a small party of adepts among your crew that assist them. Most adepts will never be skilled enough to be techpriests. Nor does the priesthood want just any monkey as a techpriest.Techpriest numbers are most often increased by recruiting, rescue, or conversion of prisoners.

The day after you set up shop, your augers light up with contacts as nearly a dozen vessels are flung back into reality at the edges of the system. Several contacts that seem to be forming into a convoy set course to plunge deep into the Habitable Zone, one of the four large enough to be cruiser sized. Two other contacts set course to follow, though the angles involved suggest they are keeping their distance from both the group and each other. They're believed to be smaller transports. The targets you're most interested in, however, are the ones on course for Templos itself. Three ships are on course for the trade world itself, one clearly an escort class vessel or sprint trader judging by speed. The other two take divergent courses, neither heading directly toward your hiding place.
