Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

You flew to Evinbrook to collect a key to Hecate's prison, but found the castle city locked in a battle for survival. Kan-Abar's armies returned, with two demon lords in tow. Duke Vellik made a plan to stall the demons with patched-up dwarven technology. You brought him to safety in exchange for the key, and offered him further sanctuary, but he chose to remain with what forces he has left and make the Kanians pay for every inch they take.

In order to permanently resolve this situation, you need the rightful king back on the throne of Kan-Abar - Obis Vin. You followed him as far as Port Vanta, where he was looking for an old ally, a pirate captain named Vidar Blackwater. Blackwater, however, made an enemy in a particular crime lord - Damian Vonnegut. You learned that after asking around too much, Obis vanished, and you suspected Vonnegut was the culprit.

You were able to locate Vonnegut's base of operations under the city, and as you snuck in, you encountered Freja Blackwater, the infamous pirate's daughter. After a brief confrontation, you figured out that your goals were the same, and joined forces. You were able to find Obis, and after forcing Vonnegut into a corner by consuming nearly his entire crew, he struck a deal with you for the king's release.

Auriel sees great opportunities ahead. She wants to try to bring together Felnoir, Kelvere, Arland, and Archon into an alliance to turn and face the Kan-Abar army and the demon lords currently consolidating their position from Evinbrook.

To that end, you met with Felnoir's de-facto leader, the mayor of Maven Lake - and Freja's father, Vidar Blackwater himself. He's promised to get in touch with Auriel. Meanwhile, you flew back to Archon to explain the situation to Yi Fang, Sir Flint, and Adavan.

Abigail's entrance into the Archonium was sudden, and not what you expected. She is lost somewhere within the enchanted gateway, stuck between bits of her personality given life and pitted against one another. With no other recourse, you dived in after her. The archonium transported you to the deep recesses of your own mind.

Within your visions of self, you discovered a new shard that had never existed before - your Humanity - and were able to fully embrace it. Your Temerity did not approve of this decision, and you had to subjugate it by force. For the moment, your internal workings have fallen into line.

You made it out of another strange vision, a desert seared by a burning sun. You found yourself back in the void between the Archonium's many gates, but before you could move on, Humanity stopped you and directed you further into the void, claiming that it could feel Abigail's presence...

>Last time...

It's just a giant ball of light, right? Like any light. Just big.

You try to Snuff out the sun.

The sun vanishes.

FUURRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

WHOOMPH

You reflexively put your hands to your ears to cover the sound...but then, you don't really have ears.

You glance down at yourself. In your panic, you assumed that human form between John and the human you created. You allow yourself to melt back to indistinct shadow.

You're floating in a void. The darkness is complete. Another gateway, another endless blackness between visions.

You can't believe that worked. You suppose not every puzzle has a complicated solution.

There's a door far ahead of you - an Archonium gateway. It twinkles with light. You head for it, flapping to propel yourself through the dark nothing.

<Wait!>

You bring yourself to a halt. <Humanity?>

<...turn to your right. Keep turning. Aaaand....stop!>

You're facing only more blackness. <What is it?>

<Abigail is that way.>

<...are you sure? There's nothing there.>

<...I sense them,> Humanity says. <...other people. Other doors. Hidden. Locked away. Hers...it's there. Go. Go!>

You fly forward as fast as you can.

You're about to ask Humanity if you're going the right way when the world flips around you. The bottom drops out of the world. You feel a sense of vertigo, as if you just passed through an archway. But then...maybe you did.

The world settles back around you.

You land in a bright green field. A river runs through a shallow valley. A small farmhouse lies in the middle of the pastures; you can see several cattle idly grazing.

Mountains rise on either side of the valley, tall and proud. A strange-looking fortress peaks out from the shelf of the cliffs ahead, all spindly supports and thin towers. You gaze at the scene, taking it all in.

<Which way?> you ask Humanity.

<...hmm...I'm not sure, now. It's...the same in every direction. But this is definitely the place.>

<Some sort of ideal? Like our vision?>

<Maybe so.>

You hear a tremendous roar.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJDyv-YVPgw

A heavy flap of wings - a wind like death - you remember that. It's a more physical memory than anything, but you still remember the image of the giant dragon that attacked you, and the elf queen, back when all this started.

A huge dragon flies over your head at high speed. It reaches the fortress in short order. A heavy bell tolls out over the valley in warning.

The dragon shoots its fiery breath down onto the fortress. A globe of spirit magic deflects most of the blast, but many flames linger, hopping on the stone, searching for wood to burn. A barrage of arrows leaps out from the towers, but falls short of the dragon.

What do you do?

>fly up and attack the dragon directly
>run on the ground, fire magic at the dragon

You sprint across the fields toward the clifftop spires. You wings bring you from hilltop to hilltop, then over the river. You land while churning your legs, maintaining top speed and staying low.

The dragon unleashes another blast of fire, but this time, better prepared, the defending mage manages to meet it with the force of his own magic. The fireball splits, and globs of flame plummet into the valley. The structure of the fortress is spared, but the grass is quick to catch fire. The dragon breaks off and dodges a second blast of Spirit from the magician.

You reach the base of the cliffs and use Deep Focus.

You feel presences scurrying about inside the fortress. There's several thousand people, many inside the mountain - what feels like mines stretch into the mountain range.

But they don't feel like people. You can tell that immediately. Souls, presences...but not human.

There's no mages but the one powerful force of Spirit. The dragon itself is probably stronger than the magician.

A fleet of griffins launches from a parapet. They fly out in formation to intercept the Dragon before it makes another pass. A third of them are incinerated before they get close, but the rest make it, and begin to scrape and claw the giant winged beast from every angle. The harassed lizard loses altitude rapidly, though you don't think it's taking all that much damage. The griffins, on the other hand are losing people fast.

You've been half-flying, half climbing up the cliffs, and you've reached the outer walls of the town. You snake and claw and slither up around the edge of a tower and peer out into the town.

The residents didn't feel like people because they aren't people.

>con't
>>
They're monsters.

Every kind of monster. You see snakes with human heads, one-eyed, muscle-bound behemoths, winged creatures with bird-like features mixed and matched with those of other animals; you see skinny, horned devils, and floating, tentacled orbs; a fat worm-like monster wriggles through a tight alley. Even what appears to be a walking frog with a large bowl of water for a head. It's a city of monsters, rushing about in panic because of the dragon attack.

More Spirit magic is being prepared - the magician is in the town's center, in the top floor of a castle. The dragon has landed on the valley floor. The griffon fleet's tight discipline keeps it distracted, but it's only a matter of time.

What do you do?

>>
Since Abigail is supposed to be some kind of super summoner. This whole thing may just be her powers completely out of control. The dragon may even be from her.
>>
>>26243894

We've reunited with all our pieces and faced down those aspects of ourselves. I think we're in Abby's mind now.
>>
>>26243894
Well, we know it is abagails trial, but we don't know what the particular parameters of it are, or how to solve it.

It might be as simple as fighting the dragon, but it could just as easily be more complicated.

Now I've got a second thought.
She's half-human, right? What if she herself split into two aspects, just as we did. Human one- the summoner, and demon one- the dragon.
Food for thought
>>
>>26243957

Judging from the first conversation we had, we THINK this is an idealized fantasy world she's created. She may have gotten stuck here, like what would've happened to us if we chose to remain as John.
>>
You decide you need to investigate the mage. You eye the chaos below, the many townsfolk fleeing into the mines. You take wing, mimicking the vague shape of a griffon. There's so many monsters gliding about, shouting, pushing, that no one pays any attention to you.

You land on the balcony of the castle's top floor. A few steps over, and there's a door leading back inside. You Ink a tendril under the door and peer into the room.

The mage marches about the room - it's an odd creature, a lion with a bear's head. A large sigil is rapidly expanding on the floor as it mutters to itself - it looks like complicated magic. It must be trying to put something together while the griffins hold it off.

You're not sure what to do - you don't know who's in the right here. The dragon appears to be the aggressor, and it seems the griffins are sacrificing themselves to give the mage time to protect the civilians. But then, perhaps this country provoked the attack themselves? You don't have very much information.

What do you do?

>stay hidden; remain neutral
>speak to the mage
>fly out and slow the dragon so the mage has time to cast his spell
>try to take out the mage, then go speak with the dragon
>some other strategy

"...what are you doing here? Everyone needs to get to the mines, now!"

<I want to know a few things,> you say. <Why is the dragon attacking?>

"...why? Are you some kind of idiot? We've been at war with the Wastes for 8 years!"

<Who do you serve?>

"...who the hell are you?" The mage turns to face you fully. "In the name of the Empress, I demand you show yourself!"

It's paranoia mostly. The defense reduction isn't too big a problem as long as we cut off the power when we start to get low on HP.

And the rampaging part really only means that it has the effective condition of "unusable around allies", which isn't too bad considering we do spend a good bit of time exploring on our own.
>>
>>26244290
That was my response to wanting DW first over Tao. Our next course of action after this is a war against Kan-Abar/Demons. We're obviously going to be surrounded by allies. I believe that if we get DW first, we'd probably never even use it before we get Tao because of this.

No matter. Time enough for it later.

"...what...what are you?!"

<I am not of this place,> you say. <I've come...from a long way away, seeking an old friend>

"...you're him," the lion says. "Changer of Forms! The Foretold Savior! The Great Shadow!"

<...what?>

"Mighty Shadow," the lion says. It prostrates itself before you, burying its bear head to the rug. "Please. The Empress has told of your coming for many years. Help to save our humble city with your power. Please slay the dragon!"

<Back up,> you say, raising your arms. <Who is this Empress?>

"The Empress is the Empress, may She live forever! The Great Lady of Spirit! Ruler and Guardian of the Empire!"

<What's her name?>

"...one as lowly as myself is not privileged to such familiarity with the Empress Herself," the lion says.

<Pretend I don't know a thing, and give me the short version of why this dragon is attacking you. Quickly.>

"...ah...well, the Empire was established to guard and maintain the borders of our peace-loving lands against incursions from the Blasted Wastes. That is a desolate place, ruled by a mad witch we call the Banshee. She often sends her summoned beasts on incursions into our territory. She is a wild and unpredictable force. Were it not for the Empress's efforts, we would have been wiped out long ago. It is the Empress, may She live forever, from whom I draw my own powers."

There's a very sudden roar from just above you. A huge hunk of the roof is ripped away. The dragon's head leers into the hole it made.

Send the mage to send word to the Empress while we confront the dragon.

This gives us the opportunity to draw the dragon away and get the bigger picture. If their side of the conflict is anything like Temerity, we might have to do a little bit of shadow boxing to get the dragon to talk, but that's fine.

The recombining part i think was unique to us. For abby to "win" i think she needs to lead her nation to victory against the armies of the banshee. Her power is summoning, so of course the conflict would be played out as a conflict between controlled units.

Symbolically, it means making her power and nature subservient to her mind, rather than becoming slave to her heritage.

<Yes?>

"...um...if something happens...will you come help me?"

You smile. <I'll always come to help you, Abigail.>

She smiles, and nods. "I'm glad."

She really took this to heart. And apparently her faith was well placed. Might also be why she didn't conquer this herself, though. Too dependent. But that could just be because she's too young for this shit
>>
>>26244891
I know that it is Abagail, and Temerity was us too.

I'm mostly saying that they probably won't literally fuse, and that the "Win Condition" is probably Abby's armies beating Banshee's and abby checkmating, rather than us just swooping in as forcing Banshee to surrender.
>>

The obvious is wrong only rarely.
Except for when it isn't.

The dragon's head looms back. Fire builds in its mouth.

You explode off the floor, leaving the carpet vaporized in a neat circle and the stone cracked where you jumped. You slam into the dragon's neck, wrapping it about with your shadow.

You know it didn't expect so much mass or momentum from a small shadow like you. You drag it down through the sky, then begin to slap with your wings, dragging it downward. Massive claws scratch for you, but you Ink out of the way while maintaining your grip, and it isn't long before you're back on the valley floor.

You attempt to slow somewhat, but not that much. You let go of the dragon, and it slams into the ground on its back, letting out a long groan. You alight a good few yards away and let it climb to its feet. It shakes its head.

<I don't want a fight,> you say. <But now that you know I'm stronger than I look...I do want to talk.>

A low rumble escapes the dragon's throat. "...talk...with monster-folk? Hmm...why don't I just burn you instead?"

<I want a peaceful resolution,> you say. <It has to start somewhere.>

"Peace? Bah." The dragon rears up on its hind legs. It towers over you. "We need nor want no peace with the /Empress/. My lady will have no peace!"

<It has to start somewhere. Why not between you and me?>

A fireball explodes out the dragon's mouth!

You flicker into and out of the reach of the dragon, constantly on the move. You never give it enough time to spew fire, but it's faster than it looks. You gash it under the arm, but it manages to swipe you back, hard. You barely avoid landing in the middle of the growing fire.

The exchange of blows continues for a few moments. You keep focusing on the right arm, and soon it's covered in slices and claw marks from your attacks.

You use the opportunity to cast Tidal Force, drawing upon the river.

A wall of water answers your call. You fly up just as it arrives. It slams into the dragon, sending him sprawling and spluttering. The fire that threatened to cut off your movements is completely doused.

Also, peace really isn't going to work here, this is like us vs Temerity, we have to help the part of abby that we know become the dominant part.

Is interrogating it even worth the effort? We're going to meet both halves of Abby-Sabby anyway. I say we finish the dragon, eat it for mana, and go meet the Empress.

Also, I think we should encourage Abby to solve this on her own. Help her as necessary - like in her duel with the Earth mage - but try to get her to solve this.

Your shadow stretches across the ground and latches on to the shadow of the dragon.

For a moment, you think it's going to break your control - but with it disoriented, bleeding, and soaked, you're able to affirm your grip on your foe. You force the dragon to face you, then manipulate its shadow to force is flat to the ground.

You walk up and stare it in the eye. <It's time to talk.>

"...will not...speak to you!"

<Why are your master and the empress fighting?>

"...the witch...commands...I...fight...I do not question."

<Where can I find the witch?>

"I...won't tell."

You use your shadow to slam the dragon's head into the ground. <Don't make me repeat myself.>

"...I...won't."

You raise the dragon's head again -

Fire rages out of its mouth!

The dragon scrambles to get back up as your control over it snaps loose. A barrage of spirit magic in the form of a dozen small needles hammers it back into the ground. The lion with a bear's head is riding on the back of a griffin - a sight you never thought you'd see, but one you sure are glad you're seeing now.

You open yourself wide, until your body forms a mouth in its entirety.

>mana: 18/48

You envelope the dragon and crunch into it. It writhes inside of you, but it's too late. It's exhausted from a long battle. Your magic rips and tears its flesh as your continue to chew, snapping its scales and bones like twigs. The scraps are vaporized by a dark swirling core of magic at your center. Eventually, it stops struggling, and begins to disintegrate. You quickly clean up the rest, piece by piece.

>you've gained 6 EXP (17 total)

The griffins land, depositing a crew of a variety of monsters. The lion-mage takes the lead. "Thank you, Lord Shadow! You have saved our fair city!"

<...it had to be done.>

"The Empress will want to speak with you immediately. Please, allow my men to escort you to the capital. It is but half a day's flight from here."

<She will?>

"Ah...well, you see, there have been...imposters," the lion says. "But after your display of greatness, I have no doubt you are legitimate. Her edict is: 'if the Great Shadow appears, bring him to court that I might speak with him'. If it pleases you, you should travel there immediately."

<What sorts of imposters?>

<Then I will see her.>

"I will escort you personally," he says. "If the witch is turning her attentions to this regions, she must be informed, and our city reinforced."

<What is your name?>

"Dev'hue, Great One, Mayor of Talisa." I prostrates itself before you, half in tears. "I am honored...I cherish your recognition!"

<...relax. Stop with the bowing and scraping.>

Dev'hue snaps back up. "Of course, Great one! Come, we fly swiftly!"

Dev'hue mounts his griffin, which bows to you, and then to him. It occurs to you that the griffins themselves are their own individuals, not just beasts of burden. What a strange world.

You soar high over the valley. Their 'swift' is only a third your flight speed. You keep up easily, taking in the scenery. You head downriver, and it slowly widens as it takes in tributaries from the surrounding mountains

You fly close to Dev'hue. <Tell me of the Banshee.>

"She is wild, reckless, and unthinking," Dev'hue says. "Barely a sentient being, by the Empress's word. She has attacked unceasingly since the great wars ended and the Empire was formed."

<And the Empire? How did it come to be? Was this all recently?>

"Yes, of course," Dev'hue says. "Forgive me. Let's see...11 years ago, the Empress appeared - younger than she is now, of course, just a child. But in all the world, only she was blessed with magic. Her kindness enraptured all, and her power defeated those whose greed blocked their ears. The times of endless war between the clans were ended in but 3 years, and the empire was founded.

"Soon after this, the Banshee appeared - how, or from where, it is not known. The Banshee, too, could use magic, but she doesn't challenge the rule of the Empress - she merely seeks the destruction of our order, of a return to the chaotic wars and battles of the past." Dev'hue shakes his head. "I fought in those wars. I am blessed that my child has, so far, grown up in a world without them. My life is the Empress's, for as long as I live, as long as I can serve."

<...I see. Why doesn't the Empire strike the Banshee down?>

"The empress's compassion keeps her defensive," he says. "She says many more lives would be lost in attacking, then in securing our position, as things stand. She seeks a great source of power to ensure that our eventual victory is swift."

<Me?>

"Well," Dev'hue says, "it is more that you are said to be the one to find this power for her."

<What sort of power are we talking about?>

"I know only the magic granted by the Empress," Dev'hue says. "She did not trouble one such as me with the specifics. But if she, so great in magic, seeks it...it must be great. With your arrival, the coming of victory is near." His voice grows more excited. "This is a grand time - the greatest of times!"

You feel a bit awkward under his glowing, anxious gaze. Apparently there's a lot riding on your shoulders.

But isn't this just a vision? But then...perhaps this is why Abigail is stuck here. The war was never won. She's been waiting - for you. To find some sort of power.

You need a lot of answers.

Eventually, you reach the head of the valley. A castle sits on a rocky hill protruding from the center of wide floodplains. The river forms a huge lake that sits around half the castle.

You fly down with the griffin escort and skim the surface of the water, ducking between ships. You see a huge sea monster dive under the water. A few moments later, it comes back up and deposit a handful of fish onto one of the boats.

The palace looms before you. Griffins aren't the only winged beasts that patrol its skies - you see small flying lizards and wyrms, creatures that seem half made of steel, and normal birds of all shapes and sizes.

The sun is setting behind you. It seems time mores more or less normally in this place.

Dev'hue lands on a large platform that seems built for the exact purpose. He is quickly recognized, and holds a brief conversation with the guards that move in to attend to you. He ushers you forward along the platform. As you step into the palace, you see a large fleet of Griffins dispatched up river, likely to reinforce Talisa.

The inside of the palace itself is quiet, and once you pass a certain point, your escort leaves but for Dev'hue. A motley collection of servants attends to orange flowers and scrubs the surfaces of the marble halls, but it's otherwise empty. You think that this section, with its vaulted ceilings and painted windows, is just for show.

A huge door looms before you - heavy solid oak carved with an image of the palace itself. Heavy gears sit at the corners of the door. Dev'hue's magic flickers, and the gears move in response, opening the portal into a long throne room.

Light streams in from open windows on either side of a long carpet that leads to the throne. The throne itself is situated at the top of a steep stair, high above the emptied audience chamber. Not sure this is the case, seeing as she did the whole "unifying the warring clans" bit in three years without any prompting, and has only been held up once confronted with the existential challenge.

Abigail.

She's aged.

But you can feel her. That familiar spirit. That familiar presence.

It's her.

<...Abigail.> You walk forward, reaching the base of the stairs. <Abby!>

"Stop!" she shouts, raising a hand. You freeze, stock still. "You," she says to Dev'hue. "Leave us."

Dev'hue bows and scrapes all the way out of the move. You look up at Abigail. <...what is it?>

"...what...what was my father's name?"

<...Jen. Jen Fang.>

"...the knight. What was the knight's name?"

<Sir Donovan Flint,> you say. <Abigail, what - >

"If you're real, then you know my nickname!" she shouts. Her hands are shaking. "What's my nickname?!"

<...Abby-Sabby,> you say gently. <You told me that yourself.>

"...are you real?"

You smile. <Abigail, I just spent a month wandering through visions trying to find you. I'm more concerned if you are.>

Abigail is already down the steps. She throws herself at you. Her hands grip your shadow. "...you'd better be real."

"I'm real," you say aloud. "It's me."

"...I've been in here...11 years...I tried to..." Her voice cracks. She sobs into your chest. "...but...I couldn't...I really never...thought that you'd - "

<...it's fine,> you say. You hold her close. <You don't have to explain. Just take a minute.>

"...ok."

After a long moment, Abigail composes herself. She takes a step back, and smiles through her tears. "...you said you'd come. I...almost gave up."

<Here I am,> you say.

"Here you are. I...won't doubt you ever again, Shadow."

<...eleven years...I half thought you'd have forgotten about me. I expected you to be caught up by this place.>

>con't
>>
"I'd never forget you!" she shouts. "...if it wasn't for your words...I wouldn't have lasted this long." She lets out a long breath. "Let's sit."

You turn, and - to your surprise - a table, and chairs, are set in the middle of the throne room. A steaming pot of tea is on top of them. You didn't feel any magic - or any presence come in.

Abigail smiles at you - and it's a big, evil grin that, for a startling second, reminds you of someone else. "I can change things here. My perceptions can become real. Setting a table is just a thought away."

<I see.>

You both take a seat. Abigail pours tea for you. You sip it gingerly. It's good - sweet, with a hint of cinnamon.

"Do you like it?"

<Mmm.>

"I'm glad." She sets her cup down. "...I guess you have some questions for me."

Considering that was a completely direct version of our desire that may not be the case. It's confusing. Then again. Shadow's only real experience with love has been romantic. And in both cases with couples, or potential couples with age gaps.

Shit's even more confusing when you remember that Shadow was more like some lost pet who barely knew how to communicate when he first met Abby and 3 months later he's suddenly a parental figure.

>>
>>26247146
>"I'm glad." She sets her cup down. "...I guess you have some questions for me."
>>26247204
This is the big one, yeah, though the answer is probably more or less "Didn't beat the Banshee yet."

More important is what has actually happened while she was here; we heard the idealized version from the foot soldiers, and given that they idolize her completely, their perception of what is going on is probably not exactly reliable.

This will probably explain what led her to believe that there is a mysterious power out there that she needs us to go find, which is the next big thing we need to know.

If she's just waiting and stagnating because we said we'd come, that's kind of not so good. If she's waiting because the construct the Archonium made from her psyche genuinely NEEDS us to come, that's another thing entirely.

This is probably a good thing to say. We're glad to help... after all, we wouldn't have come if we weren't, but if the internal change she is going to get from the Archonium that way is just an assurance that "Shadow will always do what I need to do for me", that's a terrible thing to do to her.

She has had the time to grow into the role the Archonium expects of her, now it's time for her to seize the opportunity our presence here opens up.
>>

<..what has kept you here?> you ask. <What happened? If you can change reality, why haven't you escaped?>

"They can too," she says. "A lot happened. More than a lot."

<We've got time.>

"We do," she says. "First...I was me. We were one...person, I suppose. I don't...think I'm alright, Shadow. I think something's wrong. No. I know it's wrong. I can feel the pull - toward both of them."

<Both of them?>

"I was...young, in the beginning," she says. "I thought the test was to stop the wars. It seemed like a good idea. It took me three years. In this world, only I was blessed with magic...but it took time for me to master my powers. Especially without my uncle's help, or your backup. A lot was riding on it. But once I did, the war ended swiftly.

"But that wasn't the real test. When the war was ended, I...split. Into three. I'm only a third of me. One of the others is the Banshee."

<I'm familiar. What about the other third?>

"Good. The remaining one...I don't know what to call it. Weakness? Hesitation? Procrastination?" Abigail's face changes. Lines she didn't have when she was young crease her face into hard, angered angles. "Whatever she is, she's pathetic. She's gone into hiding - and with her powers, like mine, I haven't been able to find her all this time. The Banshee makes no secret of her presence, but then, we're evenly matched. My plan has been to subjugate my weaker self to somewhat bolster my strength, and then move on the Banshee. That's where you come in."

Because this worked out so well with us and Temerity.

When your own indecision incarnates and walks off into the woods to hide forever, it's not going to be possible to convince it that it needs to act. "You...we have..." Abigail avoids your gaze. "...certain, feelings...because of...our relationship." She coughs. "Um...what I mean to say, is that while she hides from me, you might be able to lure her from hiding. I know she is probably in the east, in the untamed forests beyond the Empire."

<...lure her in...and then...?>

Abigail's eyes flash. "And then I do what is necessary."

For a moment, it's as if you can see Fang himself overlaying her, saying those exact words to you just after Abigail herself vanished into the Archonium.

<She's a part of you, Abigail,> you say. <You should try to make peace with her.>

"I won't make peace with a weakness like her," Abigail says sharply. It's not to you, but to the air - to herself. "She's pathetic. Someone like her - she could never rule. She could never lead. Did you notice the lack of personnel in my palace?"

<I did, actually.>

"I've spent these years in caution," Abigail says. "Too dangerous to go against the Banshee directly - we're too even. I needed just a bit of help from my other self. In the meantime, though, I strengthened my position, in case contingencies were needed. My empire runs on a well-oiled bureaucratic meritocracy. I separate the good apples from the bad and bring them into the fold. Even without me, the Empire would run like clockwork. It's been a fun diversion...but frankly, I'm beyond happy you've arrived. You're the balance to tip the scales."

Separating bad from good? Empires like machines? Something feels...off. It just doesn't sound like Abigail.

But before you can say anything, she keeps speaking. She gestures around herself. "But my point is, that other self...weak, cowardly, only thinking about tomorrow, not about a year from now...she could never do all this. She couldn't build it, or maintain it. She would fail our duties. She could never stand with you and - " Abgail stops. "I don't need her. I have my uncle. I have you."

The doors to the room open. Abigail frowns, and looks over your shoulder. "...what?"

"I lower myself, Great Lady," comes a familiar voice. You glance back at Dev'hue's groveling form. "But Talisa is in danger. I fear that the dragon - "

"I'm aware of the details of the attack. They outpaced your arrival."

"Of course, my Empress is aware," Dev'hue says. "But Talisa - "

"Is already being reinforced. Your apprentice has been granted full magical authority. He noted that you did not maintain the proper wards which would have warned you of an attack this deep in our territory nearly an hour in advance. He also noted that you sacrificed personnel safety to bolster mine production. He also noted that you used your position to gain access to unwilling..." Abigail blushes slightly. She studiously avoids looking at you. "...partners. Your judgement was faulty. It has already been arranged for him to replace you."

"...please..." Dev'hue's voice falls to a whisper. "...my son...I cannot be - "

"There will be no appeal," Abigail says sharply. "Do you deny these charges?"

"...no."

"Then I can make no exception. Your son will be well cared for."

"...all I could wish for...Great Lady."

And suddenly, Dev'hue is gone.

<Where did he go?>

"I removed him," Abigail says. "He was a rusted cog. Such things happen."

<...do you think that might have been a little extreme?>

Abigail shrugs. "He ignored proper protocols to put more iron on the barges. He neglected the wards. He should have known better."

<Not even a funeral?>

"It wasn't necessary," Abigail says. She takes a long sip from her tea. "Much cleaner to just erase him."

Amusingly, both she and her dark self are too busy taking action against their opposing fragments to hunt down inaction.

If either one blinks to try and split their forces and bring Indecision to heel, the other proactive Abby would be able to overpower them.

Kind of an amusing stalemate.

Not to mention that things would be much worse off if she wasn't here.
>>
Cryptically say something on the lines of <Frightening..>

See how she reacts.
>>
You're not sure how to respond to that.

"So," she says, "the plan is thus: you find this other me, earn her trust - which will be easy enough - and then lure her back here. I'll be well-prepared."

<...prepared for what?>

"She needs to be removed," Abigail says simply. She smiles, and stands from the table. "But let's talk about the details later. Shadow...I've missed you. Tonight, I want you to rest, and tomorrow, we'll spend the day together. A feast in your honor! I'll even cook for you. Does that sound good?"

<...ah...I didn't realize you knew how.>

"I could just think it all up from thin air, but that wouldn't be fun. I've had some free time, after all." She claps her hands. Immediately, servant monsters bustle in from a dozen entrances you didn't notice. "They'll escort you to your room. We'll talk more tomorrow, alright?"

<Abigail, there's...Abby, this isn't - >

"Don't worry about it! Tomorrow!" She waves a hand at you and vanishes through a side door.

The servants bow and scrape. You don't bother telling them off. You hardly notice them.

It's like another person is wearing Abigail's personality. Sometimes it rings true...and other times...like an ugly string of a broken violin.

guys, if all three are equal parts the even the "weak" abby is strong she just lacks the drive to fight while this abby lacks humanity. Regardless of what the Banshee is like we need to get these two to accept each other. Power without drive is useless and Drive without Compassion is monstrous and leads to Fang 2.0. You start to form the words, but then let them drop. You're tried from your journey through the Archonium - exhausted, in every sense of the word. You've argued with, battled against, and run through the crevices of your own mind, and the effort of it all seems to hit you all at once.

A safe room, for one night, might not be such a bad idea. And that will give you time to compose words that might get through to...this Abigail.

You're not sure what bothers you more - the sense that she's like a mirror of Fang, or the creeping awareness that she might regard you as something more than a...father-figure?

You don't even know what to call your relationship with her. You're afraid she's too eager to define it herself.

You have a lot to sort through.

You let the monsters around you hustle you up through the maze-like palace and into a luxurious sweet. Apparently it's reserved for only the most honored clan leaders. You don't really pay attention to the details.

I swear, if Archon has gone to hell in a hand basket while we were inside, I vote that we shattenkrieg SM's genitalia. Man's gotta give us a break, every once in a while.

>>
Waited until the thread was winding down since it's completely unrelated to the plot arc at hand, but I ran across a bit of information in the early threads that seems INCREDIBLY interesting in retrospect. That said, My whole post is Unlimited Speculation Works.

From exposition after our first meeting Flint in Thread 3:

>Legends speak of a time before ours that lacked magic. It wasn't born with the world, but introduced afterward. Why, or how, is not known.

This means that if Elemental Magic is the main force of Chaos, neither the world itself, nor its occupants, are necessarily things of Chaos after all. (Assuming that these legends were documented and not just random speculation that started arbitrarily from some guy going "Y'know, there USED to not BE magic." to get his kids to do manual labor out of spite because he wasn't magically capable rather than letting them use their rudimentary earth magic to till the fields so they could get back to goofing off.) He did say "Why" and "How" weren't known, but perhaps the "When" IS known, which could yield some interesting information.

If it WAS introduced, it seems likely that some greater force of Chaos akin to Erebus introduced magic to the world at an indeterminate point in the past. And/or, potentially more interestingly, the seven Greater Elementals may all be shards of A Governing Chaos, much in the same way that we are a shard of Erebus. But, Chaos being Chaos, they decided to quarrel when separated rather than devoting themselves to a greater work.

>>
If we ever do go for Chosen, I think getting the middle tree branching from Shadow Aura would be best for Tree Gift.

It gives all our stealth, Shapeshifting, and our aura abilities are what defend us from magic. And it has Blink and some other good abilities.

And who cares if Servanting / Chosening will stop Abby from aging if she can shapeshift?

>>
>>26248491
>"Elementals aren't common by any stretch," he explains quietly, "but those of Shadow, Spirit, Earth, and Water varieties are most frequent. The other four - wind, fire, lightning, light - well, I've never heard of any incidents at all. A curiosity. Something to ask a mage, maybe.
>Magic creates instability, which creates more magic. When that reaches extreme concentrations, one of two things happens. Either a sentient spirit of the element forms in order to diffuse the imbalance, or a mana pool forms, usually if there's a mix of elements in the instability.

The four "elements" with confirmed Elementals are those whose Greater Elementals remain in the world, while the four without are those that were shunted out behind Erebus' barrier. This seems like an interesting point in favor of the Greater Elementals being the driving force of Chaos. Light, Fire, Wind and Lightning magic all still work just fine despite their Greater Elementals' absence, after all, and if the "elementals are generated to defuse magical pressure" theory IS correct, removing the Greater Elemental seems to stop the pressure buildup while preserving the magic itself.

That said, their whole theory behind how Elementals are born could be wrong; those schmucks still think Shadow is an element, after all, and they seem to have confirmed the existence of naturally occuring Shadow Elementals which shouldn't be possible if elementals are caused by snowballing Chaotic energy (ones formed purposefully as part of Erebus' plan to resurrect himself notwithstanding.)

tl;dr: more questions than answers; it'll probably work itself out in due time if it's relevant and I'm not being helpful at all

I think we got a lot more leverage with her then we did with the aspects of ourselves. She obviously values our opinion and support. She said herself that all she need is us and Fang. Fang doesn't want her to be this way(the whole point was her not to be a ruler like him) and Abby didn't want Fang to be the way she is acting now. If she really only needs us and Fang, we should make it perfectly clear that she's only disappointing both of us.

I'm a little bit scared of how she'll react if we show strong disapproval, though.
She's been ruling for 8 years - fighting for 11. She was on the verge of giving up hope. If we walk in tomorrow all "You're doing it wrong and it's really disappointing" (and the dice don't cooperate), we might push her over the edge instead of pulling her back. She's gotten pretty used to relying on herself, it wouldn't be too far a step to decide that she doesn't need Shadow, either.
Especially once we reject her feelings for us.
though at least she'd be showing some emotion

We don't go full strong disapproval then. We just need to remind her why Fang wanted her here in the first place. If she gets unstable over our opinion, we'll bring up how she said that there was something wrong with how she is right now because of the three person split. Basically, focus more on there is something wrong with her because of the vision rather than her viewpoint being wrong.

He wanted you to be better. Maybe he should have done better to practice what he preaches. Maybe he forced you into this behavior with some of his methods. But this isn't what he wanted for you. It isn't what I want for you. And it isn't what you wanted for you uncle, either. Remember? You told me that you thought he was wrong, and that he knew that and did it anyway like a bad habit. I think you may have picked up some bad habits yourself these past 11 years, Abigail.>

Just thought I'd try and formulate an argument. Anyone got something to add to this? It's missing a convincing closer for one.

I kind of want to bring up this line:

><That you feel that way for people who hate you is admirable. Never lose that, Abby-Sabby. I'm proud of you for it. Always look for a better way. Sometimes...it's hard. But if we don't do it, no one will. If we don't do it, how can we expect it from others?>

from that same conversation back then and how she said she wouldn't but I'm floundering for a good way to transition into it.

and that week part of herself that she wants to destroy isa part of her and she is going to have to accept that bebcause that is a fundamental part of her personality and what makes her unique and if she destroys that instead of coming to terms with and overcoming that fear and weakness then she destroys a part of herself but does not become better for it, same goes for the banshee part of her.

That's just stating an ideology or a viewpoint, though. One she is going to disagree with. I'm trying to appeal to her and her own feelings and memories since that will be much more convincing and carry more weight than an opinion.

well we could also back that arguement with impressions of our own fight with our shards and how we subjigated them to our will and became the dominant shard and that it its what we want her to do aswell, might b worth giving it a shot

It would probably be an okay idea. At the very least, bring up our experience with Temerity(omitting the "I am Erebus" parts) and how we chose to use it would help. If she knows we went through our own experience similar to hers and came out strong without wiping out our "weakness" she'll probably feel more agreeable. Of course that may make her see us as weak ourselves. But she has a really high opinion of us. At the very least she'll probably become indecisive, it's a good wedge to get our point in.

The only problem is that i can see abby outright refuseing any outcome that involves not destrouing the other parts of herself and we agree to help her d it but secretly be saying fuck it this bitch contains nuts and start hatching scheems with weak abby and try to overthrow the kingdom of abby and the banshee kingdom. i can see it all happening so easily
