Continued from last night: you can find the beginning here: Insect Civ thread

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/26243488/

>Civ: Insects
>Gov: Theocratic monarchy
>Location: Cliff face
>Mutations: Mining Mandible, wings and Arolia
>Breading: Queen lays the eggs

>Pop: The Holy Queen, 10 attend-ants caste, 15 hunters ,40 workers, 10 larva
Building: Deep Burrows, Queen's room + Shiny , Larva Room
Food: Scavenged meat, Elk, Fish ("fishing hurts the health of the hunters, can't do it every turn), eggs (hunters can get hurt doing this), berries

Conditions:
The cliffs are cold and harsh, but everyone is well sheltered
Food is feeding everyone.
Caste based on what do most, or what the queen tells you are.
The Queens chamber is very shiny
Some unnatural hide accidentally fell on the hunters while fishing, cold at first but seems to keep him warm once it dries
Bugs can smell other bugs.
Pheromone scent totems.

This is an open action which means there won't be a list of things to do. Your castes will generally operate on their own unless specified. If they go for a while without specification ... weird things happen.

There is a civilization down by the river (in a van of course) that is unknown to the insects at the moment. There are plans to feed them some berries with adverse effects. I am re-opening this for some more decision making since there will be new people.

Also: Mutations happen every 4 turns starting next turn. Bugs hatch and grow at the same rate (coincidence?). Mutation effectivness will be determined by a d100

Laying clutches is the queen's job.
>>
>>26254147
Lets go with:
>Make the queen do her job
>Spy on our "neighbours" find out what exactly they are
>Determine how berries influence combat performance
>Hunters hunt

I believe we still have an open muataion? If that is the case I would go with camourflage.

Last post before writing:

Your larva hatch. They have a strange scent to them. When they are startled, they assume the color of a rock. Our holy matron senses that the smell that they give off is not that of a pheromone, but a chemical they secrete when they change their color.

The lays 31 more eggs this time to incubate (hatch into larva in 3 turns. Grow in 1 turn)

Your workers dig deeper ... are they drunk? They're starting to dig separate rooms for themselves. some of them are slacking off too.

The warriors attempt to spar while under the effects of the berries . Their attacks cut deeper.

The hunters go fishing this time. It's chilly but they manage to get a good haul.

Your scouts get close to the lights this time ... too close. They're spotted, but they can see the neighbors. They're massive with many warts and sharp teeth. There are two of them. One of them is holding the pheromone totem and waving it around like a dance. The neighbors seem indifferent to your scouts.

You're lucky that I rolled really well with those berries. I will roll separately for the queen to see if it affects breeding.
>>
Go see what they're using their separate rooms for. I wouldn't mind a break room, but if they're hoarding or stealing there should be consequences.

Establishing a work schedule would also be a good idea.

>>
>>26254583
>Hunt for huntings
>Let the workers create statues of our queen until we find something better for them to do
>Let our hunters hunt some more

I don't think we need to try and make contact with the trolls, they don't seem anything above tribal anyway and they sure wont come climbing the mountain.

>>26254620
That's planning a bit far ahead non?
>>
>>26254620
>all those combat evolutions

Whoa, there. I agree we need better soldiers, but let's not forget we need to research stuff like infestation or a better hive mind.

I think acid would be a good combat evolution. Trolls have hard skin and I doubt biting or stinging would work very well.
>>
>>26254633
Always have a plan.
>>
>>26254673
>>26254676
Seeing how our drones seem to develop more of an individual lifestyle and slacking off I would agree with establishing some kind of psychic hivemind to keep them under control.

We wouldn't want this to turn into a real civilization now would we?
>>
>>26254697
I agree evolve a hive mind.
>>
>>26254697
I've been thinking about that and I believe that a small amount of individuality would be a good thing. Gives them initiative and unique ideas. However, when the Queen says jump, everyone says "how high?"
>>
>>26254697
I told you things start to get weird if they aren't given directive They're told to dig deeper. They're not told how or what to dig so they really don't know what they're doing down there.

Also where do you guys want our 10 chameleon bugs going? Will they be a caste of their own?
>>
>>26254727
The chameleons would be scouts/hunters, right? This should be the point where we start dividing the hunters from the soldiers.
>>
>>26254727
I guess they will make a scout caste.

Also send them to spy even more on those Trolls.
Bugs are way superior to humans in the tabletop game
But considering the thread, I was more thinking about a quick flying force of shocktroopers to burn stuff down since until now we are human size.

I'm not sure, does size difference require an additional mutation? Cause I would think so.
>>
>>26254864
I completely agree. We should still do some digging (dat stone surplus is gonna make us mad money one of these days), but having a large Tanker to support both workers and soldiers is exactly the role the acid evolution should be placed into.

Artillery and bulldozers, rolled into one.

Your Chameleons join the scouting caste and work in the day observing the trolls while the others work at night. The trolls throw rocks at elk and other animals to catch them. They clean themselves by bathing in the river while trying to catch fish. They're a little clumsy though. They uproot pheromone totems and add them to the collection. One of the chameleons was mistaken for a rock and hurled at a buck. He is in critical condition. The rest of your scouts hurried back home with him to get him out of the cold. He's oozing badly.

Your workers attempt to shape the rocks into statues for our holy matron. They aren't very good and cannot make detailed statues. Our queen is displeased and ate a few of the workers for their insolence. The warriors joined in the feast. 5 workers are killed.

The hunters discover that some larger animals have a fear of heights. This was discovered when one of your hunters tried to chase a mountain goat into a ditch. The goat stopped at a cliff face and out hunter ran right into the goat, knocking it off the cliff.

Let's try to get them to eat some berries and see the effect, if they get drunk we can use it to kill them in their sleep.

How many are there in total? Until know I've only heard about two.
>>
>>26254986
The trolls are clearly a threat. We should plan for inevitable territory conflicts.
>>
>>26254986
Lay eggs, produce more warriors.
We need to kill these trolls dead. Acid is next evolution.

>>26255028
We've already eaten the berries. Maybe we could make stone pots and leave the berries in there for a while. That might do something.

We're becoming quite unusual insects. We hoard gold, will pretty soon be drinking gin out of flask, but are remaining true to the hive mind. I like it. A road less traveled.
>>
>>26255032
Which is why we invest in more warriors and a tanker
>>
>>26254915
size difference is a mutation. Each mutation will hold steadfast for the next clutch and so on. If you mutate into giant or diminutive size, the queen can pick from a range of sizes and which caste to breed. All bugs bred now will have wings (weak), pheromones, and digging mandibles + whatever mutation (provided that it doesn't cancel other mutations out.
>>
>>26255068
If we have evidence that these trolls enjoy the berries, it might serve us to use them as bait for ambushes. This would no doubt cut down on losses of valuable skilled warriors.
>>
>>26255068
I ment try to feed it to the trolls so we will be able to kill them when they are unable to defend themselves. A trojan horse of sorts if you want to name it like that. It will hopefully give us the edge we need.
>>
>>26254986
>>26255010
If the fleshy creatures disrespect the creations of the hive, then they disrespect the Queen more than any malformed statue! They need to be made to pay for their insult to Her divinity.

I support any method of destroying the trolls. Perhaps find a way to split them apart to more easily deal with?

Glory to Her children!
>>
>>26255095
>>26255089
>ambush with the bait being the totem and berries

I support this, but I don't think our warriors are ready. The trolls' wounds would just regenerate.
>>
>>26255109
I would rather wait and see the effects. If it actually makes them drunk we could have our scouts and warriors lingering around and breaking open their heads with their mandibles.

Let's be honest, how hard can their heads be?

But still you are right, I would like to avoid open confrontation as much as possible.
>>
>>26255028
There are two trolls, but I can assure you that they will wreck anyone who touches them right now. They are better fighters and the regeneration factor pack a kick.
>>
>>26255109
I assume that's why we are working to develop acid. A potent enough mixture would prevent them from healing quickly enough. It's my opinion that we need acid artillery, as well as infantry that can match the troll's strength with durability.
>>
Anyway let's get the eat and adapt mutation before we finally take them out, that regenerative factor of theirs will surely come in handy later on.
>>
So, what do you guys do this turn?
>>
>>26255010
Does the queen have all the mutations?
>>
>>26255205
Develop Acid
>>
>>26255205
Focus on egg laying and breeding more soldiers. A lot of taking care of the offspring and making sure they grow up strong.
>>
>>26255205
>Hunters hunt as always
>Have the workers improve the overall looks of our hive
>Have some of the scouts look beyond the troll area if they can find anything else
>Breed more soldiers
>>
>>26255225
Develop acid glands
>>
>>26255208
You have to take a mutation for that in which the hive will be able to adapt all of the mutations of future clutches
>>
>>26255205
In addition to all the other good ideas mentioned before, I also propose a history chamber be planned. Shiny things can be used to decorate it and the workers can create a timeline tribute to the founding of the hive by the holy Queen. If something glorious happens in Her name (like slaying the fleshy trolls) then it can be added to the chamber's walls.

Let any who walk the tunnels of the hive know Her history and Her greatness.

I agree, but I think the GM is hinting that we need better hands or mandibles. Whatever.
Until we get better "hands," we will continue to make terrible carvings of our Holy Queen and be barely able to plant a stick in the ground.

But we need acid first.

>>

>>
>>26255334
Don't get Antonymous all excited.
>>
>>26255322
Enslaving the trolls is an acceptable option.

>>26255350
Because we aren't as stupid as most insects and have imperfect memories. We're not like the baser creatures which can barely find their way out of a paper bag, but we do have some culture within our hive mind.
>>
>>26255350
So people will actually feel bad about it once they burn us to the ground. They will realize that from the beginning we were nothing but a civilized society looking for love and existence. Struggling to find our place in the world we were rejected and hunted down.

That or we show it to our slaves after we took over the entire world.
>>
>>26255350
Not history. Its the I get all the upgrades for my caste even after I'm born. The way it is now you have to be born with the mutation. We are working for the eating adaptation. You are what you eat. And if you eat trolls with this you get regen.
>>
>>26255388
>you are what you eat
Is this true or do we need a mutation for it?
>>
>>26255393
Pretty sure we need a mutation for that.
>>
>>26255350
Imagine it.

After sacrifices have been captured and cleaned, they can be shown the entire history of the hive. From Her glorious founding in the mountains to Her expansion and conquests.

They will know the entire story and why they are given the blessing of being fed to the holy Queen as living meals to further the broods.

>>26255358
Too late. He already has my support, the Queen must live a life of leisure and luxury befitting a goddess.

We also need the update mutation
>>
>>26255439
>history
The early Babylonians developed writing to manage their resources. Our little library would be much the same, focused on what we've gathered and eaten as well as notable events.

>the Holy Queen
I agree her holiness should live an easy life, but her ultimate duty is to command and that means she must be wise, not intoxicated.
>>
>>26255485
>we need X mutation
Stop doing this. We get mutations at a set rate. That's the strength and weakness of the Insect race. We just have to be patient.

But eventually we'd probably have a gene-weaver caste that does faster mutations. Or whatever. I think the mutation mechanic needs some work.
>>
>>26255010
By holy decree of our dear matron, the workers begin busily carving out a tunnel on an incline down the mountain. Along the walls they carve depictions of the cold clifftop where our brethren froze until we built the tunnels. The hunters were glorified as they came up with fishing (the depictions were a little crude but everyone was like "close enough". They marked down the discovery of the shinies and the room of the queen. Each evolution was depicted beautify and shows the ascension of our master race into holiness and glory of the hive. Even the berries had their place on the wall. The only thing they could not complete was the dep[iction of the trolls because they have never seen them first hand.

Our mighty soldiers pose and help judge the work of the working caste.

The hunters learn how to differentiate different footprints. They can now track and hunt goats, deer, elk, and other animals more effectively. Food is bountiful today.

The queen's eggs hatch into larva. Everyone is excited to see how they awaken.

Your scouts work their way further past the troll huts. They find a pack of wolves running around. Your scouts go into camouflage mode as a wolf comes and sniffs it. The scout doesn't break cover as the wolf pees all over the unfortunate bug. The others can't sense his pheromones afterwards. He is covered in a horrid stench. He startles the whole hive when he comes back. Nobody recognizes him besides the other scouts who were there.

This. All other civs get upgrades to their tech on an almost daily-basis, we need to catch up.

I suppose it should be the eating mutation and then the update mutation, right?

6 Acid Tankers.
5 Hunters.
20 Workers.

Let's increase our production further to strengthen our base. The trolls are the only threat right now, and they should be low on numbers so 6 tankers with lots of acids ranged acid mixed with our superrior mountain defenses should keep them at bay. That is, if they even attack in the first place.

Once we have a good economy going, we can start creating soldiers.

I don't understand why everyone is treating the Trolls as an immediate threat. They have seen us and yet they haven't attacked. Also they don't seem like they would climb our cliff anytime soon.

They should be punished and consumed for their blasphemous actions against our most divine monarch, in addition to whatever "legitimate" threat they pose.

1 = Eat and Adapt
2 = Acid
>>
>>26255827
But imagine the safety the queen would gain by adapting regeneration! Do you not want her to live forever?! Do you not wish for her resistance to disease and failiure of her imperfect underlings?!

You dare call me a heretic, but what is it you are scheming?!
>>
>>26255781
It depends. Acid is far from being a simple defensive measure. Aside from being an effective troll weapon, or just a weapon in general, it would also make it easier to break through the stone walls, speeding up construction, and it would also make it possible to digest food faster, increasing the hive's collective metabolism. It would speed things up, essentially.

The Eat and Evolve is, obviously, more useful in the long run, would have no real immediate advantage until the the next batch of eggs hatch and we eat a lot of animals. And we don't even have second generation eggs yet.

But it doesn't matter since we got acid anyway.
>>

If our beloved goddess is not already a perfect immortal deity, then why do I devote my every ounce of existence to worshiping her?!

Besides, it seems acid won. Our holy Queen has sided with us righteous. Death to the heretical fleshies.
>>
>>26256022
Let's not just rush em until we got eat and adapt, alright?

Just my opinion.
>>
Rolled 1

>>26255585
Your larva grow. There is something terribly wrong with the clutch. They were bred to have strong acid but this isn't right at all! Our clutch's acid was too strong for their bodies and ended up dying. (rolled a 9 for mutation and a 1 for effect (bad stuff)). Half of the clutch died in infancy. Another few didn't survive adulthood. The ones that did survive don't seem to have any acid at all. Those die of starvation due to not being able to digest. It is a sad day for the hive.

The Hunters learn from the trolls to use rocks in their hunting technique. They drop them from the air on unsuspecting prey. They spend the day hunting rabbits this way.

The scouts attempt to reapply pheromones to their friend. Nothing happens besides toning the scent down a bit.

The warriors and workers build an effigy to their fallen brethren.

Howling can be heard in the distance.

The queen lays 47 eggs this time
>>
>>26256046
I think that's a reasonable plan. We could spent the time until our next evolution creating a tunnel to the river, so that we can move troops and fishermen in secret.

Alright, acid didn't work out and our agreement to do eat and evolve is still valid.

Maybe we could figure out fire. Let's try that. The trolls have fire, right? Let's steal it.
>>
Yeah, that was a really bad mutation to fail on.
>>
>>26256153
Does our second attempt get a +1. Have we learned from our failure?
>>
>>26256172
What would a failure on eat and evolve do? Obviously this is meta knowledge
>>
>>26256168
The evolution would be fire glands. It will take another mutation to improve them enough to melt stone.
>>
>>26256088
Oh, for fuck's sake OP.

I guess we need harder exoskeletons then. Evolve those when possible.

Have the warriors on alert. Those howls could be dangerous. The workers should expand the hive some more, just for size, we'll work their uses later. The scouts should definitely check out the source of the howls, while another smaller number spies on the trolls.
>>
>>26256205
No, I mean instead of wasting an evolution, we get fire the traditional way. By stealing it from someone who already has it and feeding the fire so that it doesn't go out.
>>
>>26256168
We did agree to do Eat next. But we should stick with acid, it's much easier to manage than fire, despite our mistake.
>>26256208
No, we need stronger insides if anything.
>>
>>26256196
It would choose a trait and make it non-mutable.
Positive mutation: negate a negative effect
Negarive Mutation: negate a positive effect
>>
This might sound weird at first but... can we try to eat fire with the eat and evolve ability?
>>
>>26256196
You eat the creatures, but the mutation goes out of control and ends with the creature growing claws in it's eyes and tumours on it's joints. And then it dies of hunger.
>>
>>26256135
It is clearly a divine message by our Queen to learn what comes of arguing and indecisiveness. She wants us to come together in the sacrifice of our brethren to make more united choices.

Long may her holy wisdom guide us!

As for the howling, it must be identified and prepared for. The Queen's safety is of the utmost importance. Let not a single fleshy being dare intrude into her chosen lands.
>>
>>26256222
Strong insides will negate negative effects of fire and acid as well as improve intestinal fortitude, but failure to do those will make for some weak bugs
>>
>>26256247
Well, as fire is not organic, I think it will just burn.
>>26256279

Wait, are we planning on shooting the acid from inside our bodies or from organic, kitin-based pumps outside our bodies?

I was thinking the acid would work more like this.
>>
>>26256315
I was thinking of spitting it or acid saliva but who knows, it failed hard.
>>
>>26256315
I figured we'd have an acid gland, and be able to spit it at our foes. Having them internally also makes it so enemies can't just pop them.
>>
>>26256331
Well, if we make it an external acid pump that works by moving the kitin durable kitin organs using the muscles, while at the same time keeping the acid stored away from the fleshy bits, we could make much safer acid creation.

If we make stronger exoskeleton we will get much higher defenses in general, and, if the external acid was to fail, the acid-resistant skeleton would protect everything except maybe the pump muscles, so we still get functional, tough bugs.
>>
>>26256297
out of a d100
below 25 gets a chance of negative effect.
24-40 is opposite effect (not so bad outcome)
41-60 is relatively positive effect with random outcome (mixed effect)
61+ is true positive
90+ is chance super mutation (in case of fire make another roll to see if it can melt stone)

The roll I made for acid was a 9 and I made an adverse effect roll
>>
>>26256378
Yeah but currently we are working on getting something to kill the Trolls with in the first place.
What you are suggesting would probably require 2 or 3 mutations.
>>
>>26256378
In the case of acids and poisons and things of that nature I will make an extra roll to decide on how it is delivered. It could be pumped via muscle, it could be secreted like sweat, (in the case of poisons) it could be a noxious miasma.
>>
>>26256434
Super mutations could range from anything to stronger versions to multiple ways of application.
>>
>>26256434
>>26256423
Well, let's just get on with whatever. At the moment, it is the howls we should be worried about.

Do we get a +1 for having experienced such a failure?
>>
>>26256385
What's happening in the tribe now. And can we start a fungus or mold farm. It helps food production and might be able to support the larva entirely.

So far mutations we are gunning for are:
*Acid Mutation- attack, metabolism, digging
*Update Mutation- new mutation gets added to everyone in a caste every time it comes along.
*Eating Evolution Mutation- you are what you eat.

And idea is getting our lazy workers to start inventing. We might even get that geneweaver cast out of the next batch. Could be an alternative or bonus to the update mutation.

Right now we only get a mutation every four turns. Might we explore hunt and experiment with technology. I remember bugs having great technology. Is it of the organic kind though. Because that's what we've been messing with the entire time
>>
We should create an escape route for the Queen as well, in the event the howls pose a major threat to the hive.
>>
>>26256510
Yeah. With gene-weavers and eat and evolve, we should start getting some bonuses to the mutation rolls.

They have the spirit of the hive within them and find joy in serving the Queen. There is a bit of individuality to help fake human thought processes and simulate empathy, but for the most part they'd be like any other insect.
>>
>>26256153
A scout sets out to steal fire from the trolls. He thinks he sees him leave camp. As he is getting the fire, a troll comes back to the camp. The scout goes into chameleon mode which scares the shit out of the troll because he camoed himself as a fire ... outside of the designated fire area. The troll runs away to get the other one and our scout comes back with the fire.

The workers work on building an escape route for our holy matron (rolled 97 for success). The workers build an escape hatch that is smooth and wet that can slide the queen out of danger in no time. Persuers don't fall into the slide, but rather a labyrinthine pit. Our workers must be master-craft escape artists.

Our scouts go out to investigate the howling and run into the wolves. The scouts are unsure of what to do. The wolves start peeing everywhere (including on some more of our brethren). The wolves follow the scouts all the way back to the hive.

The hunters come back with various assortments of animals.
>>
>>26256621
I would shy away from becoming a race of monstergirls. We need a specialist caste for various reasons, but we shouldn't abandon our true nature just to fit in with everyone else.

Thumbed claws would be nice, though.

Beautiful. Our Queen's safety is all that I thrive for.

The wolf urine is a threat to the pheromone stability of the hive. They should be slaughtered and stored as food if they can't be used for something else.

Either way, they can't be allowed to leave. They might lead other creatures to the hive.

By holy decree of our great matron, we are tasked with domesticating these animals into the hive. The wolves, seeing that they are surrounded begin to growl . (out of 4 rolls, 2 of them were 99 (big success!)). The hunters throw some of the meat down at the wolves who begin eating. The workers move to take some to the queen and one is bitten by the alpha. Our warriors put the alpha in his place and the feast begins. The wolves sniff at the rest of the hive and become familiar with it. Our workers get to digging out a den for the wolves and we cover them with our pheromones so that we can tell them apart.

The fire warms the hive a little bit. As it stands, it will only warm one room (decide which room). It also fills the room with a hickory smell.

The only creatures with good graspers in the sorrounding area are the trolls.

Also redrawing the caste a bit.

One of the scouts is a flame keeper who will work to keep the fire growing. 80+ in success improves the flame in some way. 20- = fire goes out or he burns someone.

Wolves are currently being indoctrinated into the caste system. We will need a hound master.

Workers are set to extend tunneling down to the river. Hunters set to hunting, Warriors set to hound keeping, and scouts looking for the wolve's den.

Is that right?

But anyway, technology it is then. I guess we won't have much to gain from the Trolls but maybe our scouts find something more useful.

The larva hatch into regular ones of our kind. 47 (somewhat casteless (flying, mandibles, camoflage)) They will need to be divvied up to perform tasks.

The workers dig down but don't get very far. The rocks might be getting harder the further they go down.

The hunters try fishing but catch nothing.

The scouts wash off their wolf induced scent by trudging through a river. They don't find the wolf den yet though.

>Keep trying to find the Wolf Den
>Hunt more efficiently

We could expand the tunnel system where it's easier to dig, but let's be honest, hard rock always promises shiny things.

Time to nibble on some trolls and see what happens!

Caste division:
10 wood harvesters
5 firekeepers
2 nursery attendants
10 scouts
20 soldiers

Increase the brainpower of our hive. We aren't likely to develop magic or ki but bugs are very likely to develop psionics, or own funky strange limited but powerful magic, but that's organic tech.
>>

We are outright incapable of magic.

HUNT

>>26257509
all in favor?
>>
Gentlebugs, I believe we are ready to ambush the Trolls.

If you disagree just tell, but I think things won't change anytime soon. So as soon as we have enough food to use our hunters as soldiers for a day I would say we ambush the Trolls at night with our newfound power of fire.
>>
>>26257554
Good choice. How many of the 47 will become hunters?
>>
>>26257571
Eating the trolls will count as food for the colony
>>
>>26257574
20.
Then we have 15 wood harvesters, 10 firekeepers and 2 nursery attendants.
>>
>>26257574
Err... I guess 17... we assign a few workers to look at the fire and keep it going. They don't have much to do right now.
>>
>>26257592
You can also try to mutate eat and adapt again
>>
>>26257602
Let's give it a shot before we go in guys?
>>
Also, should I be archiving this soon? I think we're getting close to the post limit.
>>
>>26257642
Archive it now and link us to the new thread.
>>
>>26257642
Don't do that until we get to page 9. /tg/ is a slower board.
>>
>>26257660
Archive success. Creating new thread
