In the grim darkness of the 41st millenium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of thousands of Imperial provinces that form the frontline in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commisioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale. Lead them to glory or to oblivion, choice is yours.

We control a Chapter has 639 brothers and our treasury is worth 189 millions of Imperial Thrones. Our Chapter fleet is composed of 4 ships and we own one planet - Varda.
+++
Last thread we fought a fierce battle against Traitor marines of the Red Giants Chapter on the space hulk known as 'Dark Sister'. After we won initial engagement, Chapter Master ordered his brothers to evacuate into the flagship Aspera Dominus and bombarded space hulk with all the firepower at his disposal, including a cyclonic torpedoe. Space hulk, traitors and one of our greatest enemies - Sorcerer Ashkenor the Wrathbringer, perished in sub-atomic flames forever. However galaxy is full of other dangers...

We could probably order another strike cruiser or two built from Mars/Nestorium/nearby forge world so that we can have more than two ships capable of carrying/deploying a company.

If we can find some old wrecks or ships someone wants to get rid of cheap and bring them to a world we control, we could have initiates/scouts/garrison marines do mock combats to improve our ship-to-ship skills.

>Statement. Chaos is your enemy. Statement 2. You do not fear your enemies. Query: Why do you fear Chaos?
Proteus-34, a prisoner machine spirit, has never been a friend of yours, more like a slave, however recently he has been even more quiet than before. You think he was affected by what he has seen during recent years by your side. Him asking such questions is something new to you.
>>
>>26293605
Fear is the wrong word Proteus.
We do not fear, we are merely cautious of their powers, as the ones they have demonstrated ones far beyond our abilities at times.
Not only that, but negotiation is impossible, as well as any sort of outright victory.
>>
>>26293605
>'Chaos', as it is, is not our enemy, rather, those who follow chaos are our enemies, and we do not fear them.
>'Chaos', in it's purest form, is simply energy, without will or malice, an energy that every living thing in the galaxy can succumb to, our fear is not of the pawns of chaos, but rather the fear of ourselves becoming what we despise.

As Aspera Dominus emerges from the warp near Folkvangr your augers pick up a trio of ships closing from the station orbiting a dull, weary world.

"Aspera Dominus, Tempest squadron would be honored to escort you. Welcome to Folkvangr, Lord Astartes."

Folkvangr station is simple affair, utilitarian and plain like the world below it. Two other ships are docked with the station, Lord Kerr's own transport dwarfed by your vessel's mass. The other vessel classes as a cruiser, the symbols of the Order of Bloody Tears clear upon it.

"Lord Astartes, this is Folkvangr Station dockmaster. I'm afraid we can't handle battleship class vessels, shall we send a shuttle?"

And I suppose you are referencing my psyker abilities as chaos-powered, and I suppose at it's base they are, but it's the difference between using a gas cooker and starting a forest fire to cook a steak, control and moderation can breed good results, but embrace full chaos, start the forest fire, and everything goes wrong.

Sorry I'm late to the party. This seems like as good a place as any to make some suggestions:

1) Chaplains. Right now we have a company with a known cult off by itself with part of our fleet. The last time this happened we lost a company and a major ship. Recommend moving one chaplain to them to keep an eye on things and try to slowly bring them back to Imperial Creed or something less likely to piss of =I= or Ecclesiarchy.
2) Geneseed. Have Klementhos start working again on our geneseed. We have other apothecaries that can watch over the men. Suggest he get to work correcting our congenital Raven Guard deficiencies of Mucranoid or Betcher's Gland. Melanchromic can wait for later.
3) Chapter History. Get Trianon back to investigating our origins and purpose of founding.

>Statement. Your logic makes sense. Query. Can non-organics use Chaos? What effects would it have on me, if I would use it? I don't need biological sustenance, thus I wouldn't need to cook a steak. Also, if moderation is the key, why all of your brothers don't use Chaos in moderation?
>>
4) Void squad. Tell them about the Horus Heresey and that they are the descendents of a Traitor Legion (but not which one) and impress on them that they must serve the Emperor loyally to atone for their wayward brothers. Also that it is a very bad idea to mention it to others. Tell the Chapter that we have been honored by the Warriors of Redemption (working chapter name) who have secunded us 10 of their warriors, that their organization has been ravaged by the struggle against Chaos and that we should welcome and train them as if they were our own. There, we don't have to hide Void Squad, most of what we said was true (from a certain point of view) and any different behavior from them will be ignored by our battle brothers as just the weird customs of another Chapter while still not excusing any signs of heresey.
5) Servo Skulls. Have Seran equip all company scout combay squads (5) with a servo skull with scanners. So 20 skulls total. Use them for better scouting. We could really have used them on the space hulk. Before anyone can interject this should only cost 0W or 1W. They are only servo skulls.
6) ASM. Suggest the price of creating assault marines be reduced to 4W to be in line with devastators. Otherwise it creates strong impetus to favor devastators and I see no reason why a jump pack would be more expensive than a plasma cannon.
>>
>>26294014
You can, but you know how you are now?
You can speak, have reason, and most importantly use logic.
If we imbued you with Chaos, all of that would go out of the window.
That's what we mean by a "forest fire", and that happens to everything and everyone who comes in contact with Chaos.

Only some of us have enough of a connection to use Chaos to our advantage, Psykers are a rare thing among humans, and even rarer among Space Marines.

The ramp of the thunderhawk lowers slowly, revealing a collection of nearly two dozen men and women standing in in formation. Their heads all shift slightly as your armor meets the ramp, followed by your shadow guard and finally the massive bulk of Horim the Heartless. You hear the whispers as the eyes of the humans grow wide, locked upon Horim. "What is it? I don't know! It's huge! It can't be..." Enhanced hearing captures their stunned, awe-filled words before an older man steps forward, his crisp uniform contrasting sharply with his flesh.

He regards you for a moment as you tower over him, no sign of emotion upon his face. "Lord Astartes, you bless us with your presence." As he takes a knee, the men behind him follow as one. "If you'll allow us, Lord Astartes, we will escort you to Lord Kerr." Horim's assault cannon cycles menacingly as he is left to guard the thunderhawk

A simple nod and the humans form into two lines to your flanks and lead you through the station to the dock where Alexander Kerr's vessel is being loaded with supplies. Clearly visible, the rogue trader seems to be standing among a small group of Sororitas and speaking with one of them. Noticing you, he draws the attention of his conversation partner towards you and your shadow guard.

"Lord Chapter Master! I am quite glad that you have arrived when you did!" Kerr's voice holds the same confidence as it did upon Tachion Primaris, though his smile is less so. "I do not believe that I must introduce Cannoness Engel of the Order of Bloody Tears?"

Permission denied. Over 10,000 years of human efforts have shown--without exception--that attempts to "understand" or "control" Chaos are not fruitful and always result in damage to the investigator(s). Broad understanding of the general concepts is possible but anything more results in extreme risk with no reward. I suggest you concentrate your efforts on other, more fruitful endeavors.

>Every energy can be tamed and harnessed

everything but the warp, proteus 34, it is the very definition of unpredictable. I have a theory on the subject, in fact. You are familiar with Heisenberg's uncertainty principle yes? that the more closely you measure the location of a particle, the more likely it is to quantum teleport outside said location?

In the warp, our laws of physics are not obeyed, so I believe the planck constant within the warp is so different to ours as to make quantum teleportation after any degree of measuring location almost certain, thus making it impossible to harness any particles of warp energy in mechanical way.

Not at all, the Ecclesiarchy bellow the Imperial Truth at anything that stands still long enough so we are perfectly capable of knowing what that is.

>>
>>26294739
Oh sorry I see the misunderstanding now. I meant the "Imperial Truth" that the Emperor is a god as preached by the Ecclesiarchy. Not the Imperial Truth that the Emperor gave of atheism which is why I separated the two ideas in my original post.

Sorry if I was using bad terminology.
>>
>>26294760
Thanks, Imperial Creed is what I was thinking of, my mistake.
>>
>>26294787
It's very uncommon for space marines to follow imperial creed, as they typically think of the emperor as the pinnacle of humanity rather than a literal god. I'm not sure it'll go down well.
>>
>>26294773

yeah, but leaning more towards the latter.

Engel stiffens slightly at your greeting, her eyes looking at your helmed face as if she knows that you're a ghost from beyond the grave. "Chapter Master. I hope Mormark is well." Bowing her head ever so slightly, she snubs your offered hand and maintains a careful distance from you. The Sororitas around her give you hateful looks, save for a single sister that seems frozen by your presence until you shift your gaze upon her and she quickly looks away.

Kerr looks between both yourself and Engel, a sigh escaping him. "I expected as such, though I had hoped for better. Cannoness, Chapter Master... I have a request of you both. I've watched over Folkvangr since my father's death, but I fear that the neighboring Sector Corgus is where my destiny lies. In my absence, I worry I can trust no one man or woman to care and protect this world." A smile returns to his face as the Cannoness gives him a queer look. "So I ask of you both, will you protect and care for Folkvangr in my absence?"

Sincere apologies, my mistake.

+Trianon is working in his library, he is perfectly fine and doesn't want to go to Luna.
+'Warriors of Redemption' have successfully integrated into the Chapter, everyone welcomes them as comrades in arms against a common enemy. Void squad is concerned about their past, but they consider Ghosts to be their real progenitors and their loyalty does not waver.
>>26294708
>Statement. I would like to merely collect data from all possible sources, Imperial History included. This unit would then apply mathematical models trying to find correlation between triggers of Chaos and it's effects. Expected result would be a better understanding of how and where will Chaos strike again. The more data you will give me about our enemies, the more I will be able to tell about their upcoming plans and means to accomplish them.
>>26294739
I think you mixed up Imperial Truth with Imperial Creed(Imperial Cult)
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial_Truth
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial_Cult
Also, Imperial Truth is more Humanity Fuck Yeah! + For Science! + Atheisim, than just atheism.
>>
>>26294818
which is why I said second best choice. still better than this Ice Killer cult (which we still have no idea what they believe. I'm fine with whatever people want to replace it with I'm just uneasy about another cult with half our fleet under their command and no supervision.
>>
>>26294893
Proteus, you are forbidden from any experiments to do with Chaos, however collecting data is a perfectly reasonable and acceptable course of action.
As a second task I would like for you to try and improve upon armor schematics, is this agreeable?
>>
>>26294871
The planet is bound to have a bunch of shit still going around we could use it as a training world for war zone situation. do I'd say yes.

Information on Folkvangr:

http://chapterquest.wikia.com/wiki/Folkvangr
>>
>>26294871
Protect and care? My duty to humanity is never-ending, but I would prefer those duties to be a bit more specific. Do you wish for us to manage Folkvangr's finances, day-to-day management, or exclusively defence in case of an external threat, or perhaps internal policing? Also, in what relation would me and the Canoness work together, as equals with equal decision making powers? As advisors to your appointed stewards?
>>
>>26294871
>To waht extent do you mean 'protection' Lord Kerr? I will not hesitate to dispatch aid if this planet requires but I simply do not have the manpower to leave a garrison force.
>>
>>26294999
I can go with this.

How is Klementhos' geneseed experimentation working out?
>>
>>26295135
I'd recommend waiting with that once we get a chance to drop by Agrotus, the sector's gene and biological research capital.
>>
>>26295166
No, he's already started before.
>>
>>26295182
Then let him drop by asap?
>>
>>26295196
Well, he's created a bunch of marines at 10x Geneseed spitting out speed, so I'm just wondering if they all popped off dead or something.
>>
>>26295211
Oooh, that geneseed experimentation.
Yeah, ask Klementhos how he's doing.

>Statement. Indeed it is. Examining chaos or any of your other enemies would allow me to make estimation on what is your current armour lacking agains their weaponry.
>>26295135
It'll take him another 7 years(eta 345,M41, please add to expected events), but he thinks he'll be able to fix either Mucranoid deficiency or degeneration of Belchers gland. On the other hand, he might be wrong - after all even if he is a genius, many have tried before. Also, do you allow him to use untainted pre-Heresy geneseed in his tasks? What other experiments would you like him to take on?he can do only one at a time)
>>26295166
Indeed, that place is a wonder.

I'll be finishing now, but Dockmaster/Machine Spirit/Alexander Kerr will continue to GM for you your encounter in Folkvangr. If you have any last questions for me, I am still here for a while.

My bad, forgot about that experiment. Please choose which ones of those two experiments do you want to continue and which one should be on hold?
>correcting mutations
>improving gene-seed growth
>>
>>26295259
I meant about the accelerated Geneseed program, Skargan.
That was set up ages ago.
How much untainted Geneseed do we have left?
>>
>>26295291
As far as I remember, the experiment with the gene-seed growth was already finished, we were merely awaiting results from the patients.
Which we should have seen years ago.
>>
>>26295291
I thought the accelerated geneseed experiment was completed successfully?
>333.M41 = We will receive 9 geneseed due to Klementhos' experimentation on volunteers from the 5th company.

Therefore he is free to begin a new experiment. I am suggesting that he try to correct defects in our gene seed since we currently have a pretty good amount of geneseed.
>>
>>26295336
It shouldn't be a one-off thing though.
That's 9 Geneseed PER YEAR, according to Klementhos.
>>
>>26295357
no if memory serves he got 9 volunteers and modified them so that they produced geneseed faster but not every year. it was then harvested

If you wish to initiate second phase of this experiment, then please roll against Klementhos' Genetics skill. Or he can repeat what he did last time with minimum risk.

That was a one-time thing, because of additional dangers involved. You simply never followed up.

"I am well aware of your duties to the entire sector, Lord Astartes." Kerr sighs once more, shooting a sour look at the slight smirk upon Engel's face. "This world has been both given to and purchased by my father and I over time, and we've dedicated our lives to restoring it despite the ire of the Iron Monks. Monuments to the dead instead of to Cardinal Kest. Without my presence, I fear the Iron Monks will seek to bring this world under their dominion like others before it." Engel and Kerr have locked eyes, but he continues to speak. "Cannoness Engel will not leave those in need to suffer, but to trust only her Order is to invite the Iron Monks regardless of any pledge she makes."

Kerr turns to you, his eyes staring through the visage of your helm into your own enhanced eyes. "I ask that the Ghosts of Retribution treat this world as they would their own. The population is entirely Ionian veterans, defiant of the Iron Monks but loyal to the Emperor beyond question. The ruins of the third crusade are scattered across a death world of battlefields that still see the abominations crafted from the flesh of the original population rise to continue war. Take what you will of Folkvangr, so long as you guard it politically from the Iron Monks. I am not giving you the world, but it's people can not stand alone."

Engel's fists are clenched as she stares at Kerr.

Yes.

>>

Engel barely controls a snarl as you ask her opinion of the terms, but the sister with the strange look leans in slightly and whispers something into her ear. Closing her eyes, the Cannoness calms herself slightly. "I don't like it. They failed upon Prothera, our home, Alexander. But a debt owed to Brother Kerr can not be ignored. Am I just to provide care for Folkvangr's population and sisters in the event of invasion by xenos?"

"Aye, though assigning an advisor from your order would not harm matters." Kerr is once again smiling as he did after chasing off Preacher Haran Dreifus before St. Evangelion's Cathedral. One of the sisters steps forward, looking at Engel and then Kerr. "I volunteer, as Judith can not." Engel simply nods, her fist moving slightly toward her side as Kerr beams. "Then it is settled, my dear Amelia Engel and The esteemed Lord Astarte shall steward Folkvangr in my absence."

>They failed upon Prothera, our home, Alexander.
The damage to one of the Emperor's planets grieves us all Cannonness. We performed our duty and came to Prothera's aid when others did not. Sadly, we could not prevent all damage to the planet but we have repaired the weather control devices, ensured that medical supplies reached the planet and, most importantly, brought the Emperor's Wrath to those who perpetrated these events. You will be happy to know that the Traitor Warband known as the Red Giants--along with their sorcerous leader-- recently met their end at the end of a cyclonic torpedo.

"You allowed my home world, my mother's home world, to be devastated. That you managed to correct the results of your failure
after the fact matters little."

Kerr stands stiffly, his eyes silently agreeing with Engel's words. "That the culprits were destroyed by the Emperor's Wrath is something, however. For that, sons and daughters of Prothera should be thankful."

Alexander Kerr's departure is a simple matter, the man shaking your gauntleted hand with some awkwardness as Cannoness Engel stands beside you. "Thank you, Lord Astartes. May Folkvangr prove it's worth to you a dozen times over. If you'd be so kind as to give Cannoness Engel and myself a moment alone."

As you exit the gangway of Lord Kerr's vessel, you glance back to find the two humans embracing tightly before Kerr places a soft kiss upon the Cannoness' cheek. Tracker Occulus detects tears running down Engel's cheek and falling from her chin as Kerr walks toward his ship, but she wipes them away thinking your enhanced senses weren't aware.

"Alexander trusted you with his planet, Chapter Master. Do not fail him or not even the Emperor will save you from me." Engel quickly walks away, leaving you to watch Kerr's vessel slowly move away until it joins the countless stars in the void. You sit and wonder how many worlds orbit those stars, then how many have the Emperor's faithful crying out for salvation from some horrible xenos threat or the rot of Chaos. Will you fail to protect another world like Prothera? Find another death among the Emperor's worlds? The weight is heavy upon your soul as you wonder which star's light shines upon Arcon and Third Company. You'll just have to carry that weight.
