It's happneing! VALKRIAN MERCS QUEST!

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You first arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact, and figh off an Imperial amphibious invasion by defeating their leader, Belkan Knight Sir Fleisher.

You then moved on to Ustio, where you helped the beleaguered defenders fend off an Imperial offensive and stage a counterattack ending with the defeat of the Knight leading the Imperial forces in the area, breaking the back of the Imperial offensive.

You then returned to Gallia to help the Loyalists fight the GRA and rescue Archduchess Cordelia. You also finally decided to move on from your past and start a relationship with your longtime friend and XO, Sam. Now, you've been recruited by Lynch to destroy two Valkrur superweapons. You already managed to destroy Stonehenge, and all that is left is Excalibur.

Oh, and you asked Sam to marry you, and she accepted. Nothing possibly bad can happen from this, right?

You're now participating in the Federations offensive into Belka, in an attempt to take pressure off the main offensive in the Round Table, as well as destroy Excalibur.

Valkyrian Mercs Quest, FUCK YES!
>>
Gentlemen. I wrote something.

...That was the biggest lie I have ever told. I did not write this. I was merely the pen it used to enter the world. Never have I written something so heartfelt, so true, so HUMAN. And I never will again.

That does not bother me.

I present to you... my latest masterpiece.

Well, this was it. The final push into the Hydrian Mountains, and hopefully the facility where Excalibur was being held, was almost upon you, and it couldn't have come any sooner. According to Lynch, Jack, and Elizabeth's estimations, the superweapon was due to be operation in a matter of weeks, if not days. On the eve of the operation, Freyberg was finally told the full story by Federation High Command. With the tragic loss of Stonehenge, the Federation had no answer to Excalibur, meaning this was a do or die mission.

As expected, Freyberg was throwing EVERYTHING he had at this assault, including his reserves and rearguard units. The understanding was that if they failed this mission, the ability to retreat out of Belka was pretty much a moot point.

However, while the main Federation forces tried to barge in through the front door, Tarin's father Edwin presented an alternate way to get into the facility, which is why you were in a personal briefing meeting with him and Freyberg.

"Are you sure this is safe?" You ask, frowning at the part of the map Edwin had circled. It was a ventilation duct that expelled the waste heat from the Hydrian Facility's machinery and furnaces. Due to the size of the facility, the duct was massive. Massive enough to fit a certain heavy tank...

"Well..." Edwin frowns. "The security there is pretty light."

"That wasn't the question I asked." You scowl.

"Okay, so everybody who tried using that route to infiltrate or escape got incinerated by the heat, but the theory is sound. Your vehicles should be insulated enough to protect you from that."

"Should?" You sigh.

"Look, it's either that, or you bust down the front door, because there's nowhere else you can sneak in a large enough force to sabotage the facility from the inside." Edwin points out.

"I agree, this is our best chance." Freyberg nods. "We're already gambling everything we have on this attack."

Do both. This is too risky to put our eggs in one basket. The Demons and anybody you can spare will go in the back door, and the rest of the forces will commit to a frontal attack. Hopefully the frontal attack will drawn attention away from us and if you are able to enter through the front, then we will be able to force them to split their defenses
>>
>>26297475
Yes, that's already the plan. The question is whether you want to risk going down that duct or you assist the frontal attack.
>>
>>26297372
Why is this plan giving me Judge Sly flashbacks?

"It looks like we're just going to have to go for it." You sigh. "Okay, so assuming we get through the vents alive, what's next?"

"Well, there's three courses of action." Freyberg starts pointing to Edwin's meticulously drawn map. "You can either head straight for the weapon and destroy it, try and sabotage the defenses from the inside to get our own forces into the base, or you can split up and try to do both. All have their risks and rewards."

What's the layout of the base? Is it possible to destroy critical instructor to force everyone out? If we're getting in through the heat vent, can't we blow up what's causing all that heat?

Is taking the HQ feasible?

If the answer is no for both, then let's sabotage the defenses.

>>
>>26297819
The composite armor already makes you as heat resistant as possible.

>>26297803
The base has multiple failsafes in case of mechanical failure. In the case of the heat vent, blocking it will only cause the internal temperature to rise very VERY slowly. Certainly not fast enough to cause any sort of catastrophic failure.

And taking out the HQ would fall under sabotaging the defenses.
>>
>>26297875
Of course not. We've also got one Sapiniard, one Albian, three Imperials, one Emmerian, and the Stig. So we're filling the walls with our multicultural dead.

>>

>We'll head straight for the weapon.
>>
>>26297706
"We'll go straight for the weapon." You say. "I'm sure Freyberg will be able to break through on his own."

"I appreciate the confidence, but there's no guarantee we'll be able to break through fast enough to support you. It's very likely you'll be all on your own in there."

"We'll deal with it." You nod. "And what about you, Edwin?"

"That vent isn't the only way into the base. I'll be sending in a number of smaller teams in to try and confuse the defenders. Gives a little bit more of a chance to pull this off."

"Alright." You nod. "We've got a plan, then."

With the attack scheduled to begin just a few hours, the town of Fardan was already a bustle of activity. Tanks were being activated and rolled out. Any vehicles too damaged to continue were taken apart to repair others, or scuttled to prevent reuse. Troops were rushing to their assembly points, weapons at the ready.

When you reach your staging point, the Demons are all already there. Sam, Ramirez, Tarin, Brillant, Heloise, Alek, Julia, Elizabeth, Isolde, Headcase, Elsa, Arthur, and the Stig were all ready and waiting.

If there was ever a moment for a corny and/or inspiring speech, now was the time.

>Well?

The scrapes, the close calls, the funny shit, THIS one is going to be it. We end this, and hopefully, we end the war. We'll have peace, maybe for a couple years, maybe for a couple of centuries to come, but at least we'll have time to rest, relax, and get on with our lives, and hopefully, when this is all over, we'll settle down like any family should and you'll never have to kill another person again."
>>
so we use a buzzbomb on the weapon and call it a day. like they can shoot it down
>>
>>26298103
Demons, these past months/year has been one hell of a ride. From the coasts of Albion, the streets of Utsio, to the forests of Gallia and now Excalibur. I have seen life and death, happiness and sorrow, hatred and love. We have made more changes to the world than any one person ever could in their lifetime, many of whom died for. This mission will determine if our future is mired with war or blossoming with peace. You all know that this mission is voluntary and I wouldn't force you to take it. If you wish to leave do so now and I will not think of anything less of you.

Demons, it's time to get our paycheck and our future.

Since time immemorial, great people have risen from humble beginnings to...

And so it was with the DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ!

Since forming from the nation of Gallia, the once small-time merc company has evolved into the most badass merc company the world has ever seen.

And now we're about to lay the biggest smack down in the history of the Earth. When Excalibur falls, it will be remembered as the day the Demons shoved it into the rear exhaust pipe Belka, and it will be glorious!

"DEMONS!" You yell, standing atop of Fenrir to get their attention. "How long has it been since we first formed up? A year? Two? Feels like decades, doesn't it? Well, after all that we've been through. The scrapes, the close calls, the funny shit, THIS one is going to be it. We end this, we end the war. Everybody cheers, which is all the response you need.

"Okay then, let's earn some money!" You yell, jumping off Fenrir. "DEMONS, MOVE OUT!"

They said that the collective rumbling of all that armor moving simultaneously could be felt all the way to Ustio, as thousands and thousands of tanks, armored vehicles, trucks, and transports pushed their way to the Hydrian Mountains. There, nestled into the rock was a massive set of steel doors surrounded by countless defensive positions and Imperial troops.

However, none of this was your concern. With Edwin leading the way, you and the Demons take the long way around, coming up to the heat vent he was talking about. His men had already taken out the few guards assigned to watch it, so all that was left for you was to enter it.

"Good luck, Captain. Once you're in there, there's no going back." Edwin says, shaking your hand. "Keep an eye on Tarin for me."

"She'll probably be the on keeping an eye on US." You grin. "Good luck, Edwin."

(cont)
>>
>>26299114
With that, Edwin's men pull the protective grate off. You can already feel the blistering heat emanating from the vent hit you like a brick wall. This was going to suck.

One by one, your small convoy enters the vent, with Fenrir and Kilroy going in first and the Growler following close behind.

"Oh god, this was a TERRIBLE idea, sir!" Julia complains.

Even though the vehicles were insulated, that only made the heat survivable. Already everybody was sweating like you were trapped in a sauna. You only hoped that this would be the worst it would get.

I don't think we'll kill her. From a meta perspective, there's still a couple of Karlafags / Karla-to-whatever converts to vote for alternatives. From an IC perspective, this is the girl we grew up and fell in love with. Granted, that all went to shit with the invasion, but I'd find it hard to believe if there weren't still some lingering feeling for what we once had.

"Julia, Headcase, what are your conditions?" You ask.

"Besides boiling in my own sweat?" Julia says in an annoyed tone. "Nothing too serious. Just need to cool off the engine for a bit once we get out of here."

"Same here." Headcase says. Oddly enough he doesn't sound bothered by the heat. That guy was way too laid back, you thought.

"Okay, cover your ears!" Julia warns. "This is gonna get loud!"

Fenrir's cannon gives out a massive BOOM as she blows out the grate blocking the other end of the vent. She then pushes her way through mangled steel, machinery, and wire, leaving a hole big enough for the other vehicles to follow through. The moment you leave the vent, you kick the door open and you all pile out of the Growler.

"Oh man that feels so nice!" Brillant says, breathing in the relatively cooler air.

"After this, I'm going back to the mountains, and never leaving them ever again." Alek says glumly. Looks like the took the worst of it.

"Awww, don't worry Alek." Elsa says, kissing him on the forehead. "It's all over now.

And then you notice that thanks to all that sweat causing their uniforms to stick, all of your female squad members' figures have gotten a bit more accentuated...

No! CONCENTRATE!

"Hey, Captain." Elizabeth waves you over, pointing to what looks like a phone built into the wall. "They're using wired comms in this facility. I'm guessing they can't get good radio signals inside. If you want, I can try patching in to see what's going on."

"We've wasted enough time here." You say, walking back to the assembled Demons. At this point, the engines on your vehicles have already cooled down enough that they can be safely operated again. Now all that's left is to actually get to Excalibur.

Checking the map Edwin provided to you, you see that he's marked two possible routes to the inner chamber where the weapon is being kept. One is the main access shaft. The shaft had to be big enough to transport construction materials and supplies through, so naturally it was large enough to accommodate your vehicles. The problem was that it was a very obvious route, and you'd be spotted the moment you got onto it. However, it was the fastest way there.

The second alternative was to work your way through the maintenance access tunnels. These tunnels were similarly large, since the maintenance crews needed their own vehicles to get around. However, the space was much tighter, leaving you with less room to maneuver. Couple that with multiple branching paths that turned the tunnels in a maze, and provided ample opportunities for ambushes, and you had an equally dangerous route. However, that was only if you were detected, which would probably something you could avoid easier in there.

"Okay, Demons, we're going to try and avoid the main forces and go through the maintenance access shafts." You say.

"Sheesh, always have to take the routes that give us tankers the hardest time, huh?" Julia sighs.

"Well, you guys need a challenge after all. You're bulletproof and we're not."

"Ha ha, fuck you, sir."

To be fair, you can sort of understand Julia's frustration. Fenrir can barely fit into the tunnels without scraping the sides, and turning and maneuvering is a quite a pain. You're definitely going to have a lot of time eaten up when this is said and done.

>>
>>26300324
Not really, more like picking the right tool for the right moment. Part of that is choosing where and when you engage your enemy.

If things go tits up in these tunnels we're going to be feeling it later. Also you guys forget Karla has plans to relocate Excaliber.

If we had chosen main access, we might have had a lot more control in dictating the skirmish. We also could act and react more quickly and decisively.

Down here we'll get bogged down.
>>
>>26300270
You nod to the Tarin and Brillant, who quickly take position to intercept the oncoming vehicle. You and Ramirez then circle around to come to it from behind to keep it from escaping. Meanwhile, Isolde and Sam get their lances ready.

The maintenance truck trundles along as if nothing was wrong in the world, up until its path is blocked by a several hundred ton tank with a very VERY big gun. The driver screams and tries to put his vehicle into reverse, until he's met with several guns in his face.

"Hands up where I can see them." You say.

It's not unreasonable to assume he'd be at least a little offended by the request. Possibly not enough to attack the guy, but likely enough to call him on it or refuse.

Sam works up the courage, and for the most part, the whole thing goes off without a hitch. Now that you look back on it, the whole affair was honestly kind of silly. But that was for another time.

"WOWEE!" Nader whoops. "Well, thanks a lot, miss, that really made my day! If you want to get to the main assembly floor, just go straight down this tunnel, and take a right at the dead end, and it'll be right there. Ya can't miss it!"

"Thanks a lot, Nader. Go, uh, continue with your break I guess."

"Well uh, we'll be on our way, I guess." You say, "But just a heads up, things are gonna get pretty loud down here, so you might want to find somewhere to lay low for a while."

"Aw heck, that means I might even be able to get a nap in!" Nader grins. "You folks have a good time, alright?"

And with that, Nader putts off in his little truck, leaving the rest of you behind.

"He was... an interesting guy." Sam blinks.

"I didn't see anything wrong with him." Headcase remarks.

"Okay! We wasted enough time! We got directions, let's go!" You say.

Fortunately, it looked like Nader had told you the truth. You followed his directions and pretty soon you come across a large, sealed door. However, there didn't appear to be any security measures on it. It was designed to keep fires from spreading, but also to be easily opened by maintenance staff if something was damaged. On the other side, despite the thick metal door, you could hear the loud whirring and clanking of construction equipment.

"Hold up, sir, there's another comm terminal here." Elizabeth points.

"Ah HA! I got something!" Elizabeth grins as she brings up her earpiece. "Hmmm, let's see..."

"Well?" You ask.

"Well, I've tapped into their defense network. It's a mess right now because of the Federation attack. The bulk of their forces are concentrated on the front. Edwin's guys are also doing a good job keeping them spread thin. The main assembly is almost completely unguarded."

"Well, that's good." You nod.

"Wait... there's something else..." Elizabeth narrows her eyes. "Something about Excalibur not being ready yet... but its carrier. is. Payload is ready to launch..."

"Shit, they're going to try and move it!" You scowl. You should've figured. Having a massive weapon like Excalibur mounted here wouldn't do much good. It would have limited targets. But mount it on something like Valkof....

"Demons! We're moving out and going in loud!" You say, jumping into the Growler.

You don't even bother opening the blast door. Fenrir just blasts straight through it with her 122mm cannon. The steel door crumples like paper and your convoy rushes through it.

Unfortunately, waiting for you on the other side is none other than Sir Erik Schnee, and he's not alone. Flanking him are Sirs Fleisher and Heinrich. And all of them are driving Schakals, one of the most feared of Imperial heavy tanks.

"JAGER STURMFUHRER!" Sir Schnee shouts, standing atop his tank, arms crossed. "If you wish to stop the Princess, you will have to get past us! Prepare for battle!"

"You go on ahead, sir. Me and Headcase can take care of these guys." Julia says.

"Sam, you down with tangling some Schakals?" You ask.

"Born ready, Cap." Sam grins.

"Good luck." You give Sam a full kiss on the lips. The other Demons pretend not to look. Sam then winks, and with Gungnir in tow, she leaps out of the Growler and moves off on the hunt.

You can hear rampant explosions and cannon fire in the background, as well as the shriek of lance rockets. However, you can't let that distract you. You've still got a superweapon to stop.

As the Growler speeds along, you finally get your first good look at Excalibur. It was pretty much exactly like Valkof, a massive Valkrur lance. You see it on its side, surrounded by construction scaffolding. Up ahead, there's a bridge that leads to a landing just next to the weapon.

"Holy shit, how are we supposed to destroy that?" Brillant breathes.

"Exactly the last time Gallia did it. We hit it with enough explosives, and it'll crack apart." You say.

Suddenly, a lance rocket whines past you from the rear, arcing through the air and slamming into the ground a few meters ahead of you. Turning back, you can see infantry a couple hundred meters behind you moving in. Among them is a very familiar looking squire.

"Sir." Heloise says, facing you." Requesting permission to disembark."

"What the hell are you planning, Heloise?" You ask.

"We can't let those troops cross the bridge and bog us down. I've got the charges and the expertise to blow it. You guys can let me off here, and I'll buy you some time."

"Alright." You nod and then turn to Ramirez. "RAMIREZ! You back up Heloise and keep her alive!"

"Yes sir!"

"I mean it, Ramirez. If she can't take the shot, then you're going to have to. Can I trust you on that?"

"YES SIR!" Ramirez shouts, knowing what you're implying.

"Heloise! Ramirez! Demolish that bridge and STAY ALIVE! You got that? Now go go go!"

You open the back door of the Growler and Heloise and Ramirez leap out. Heloise is already pulling out ragnite charges from her pack while Ramirez starts spraying suppressing fire at the oncoming infantry.

The Growler continues on. You look on to see that out of your squad, only Alek, Elsa, Isolde, Brillant, Tarin, and Arthur are left. You finally reach the depths of the construction scaffold.

"Sir," Alek speaks up. "Permission for me and Elsa to get off here."

"What for?" You ask.

Alek points up, and you see an observation tower just above you. No doubt for foremen and overseers to keep a watchful eye on their workers. "That vantage point can give us a good view. We could provide some support to anybody who needs it."

"Good thinking Alek. Go for it." You say.

Alek nods, and after giving Elsa a quick peck on the lips, they both leap out of the Growler. They both start creeping up the tower, knives and pistols drawn. You honestly fell a bit sorry for the poor saps up in that tower, if there were any.

Then, you hear a massive BOOM and you whip around. You see the bridge going up in flames, sending molten steel and fire flying everywhere. The entire structure then begins to collapse. Unfortunately, you're too far away to see if Heloise or Ramirez were clear of the blast, or were even still alive.

Elizabeth, can you get them on the radio?" You ask.

"Comms are a mess." Elizabeth shakes her head. "I can't get anything."

The Growler then screeches to a stop.

"I think this is the place." The Stig says simply.

You poke you head out from the top of the Growler to see that you're literally just feet away from the edge of Excalibur. You see a section where the ancient lance has already been cracked open, either through age or human error. Either way, the blue glow emanating from the crack signaled that it was its weak spot.

"That's our target!" You yell, pointing at the crack. "Arthur, grab your demo kit and-"

And then suddenly, the entire chamber begins to rumble, causing the scaffolding to rock and sway.

"LAUNCH SEQUENCE UNDERWAY." A loud voice blares through unseen loudspeakers. "ALL PERSONNEL CLEAR THE CONSTRUCTION AREA. I REPEAT. ALL CONSTRUCTION PERSONNEL CLEAR THE CONSTRUCTION AREA."

You then look around to see where the doors were opening, but you don't see anything but solid wall. How were they going to get Excalibur out of here?

And the the weapon shifts. Not the side, but UP. You crane your head back and realize that the reason you could find the door was because it was ABOVE you. Karla didn't mount the weapon on a giant tank.

She mounted it on a giant airship.

As it lifts off into the air, you can see large letters painted on its side...
