In the grim darkness of the 41st millenium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of thousands of Imperial provinces that form the frontline in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commisioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale. Lead them to glory or to oblivion, choice is yours.

Last thread Chapter Master met with brother Cagirates while under surveillance by the servants of Sector Governor. He gave Cagirates a question and today we shall receive his answer.

Also, Ecclesiarchy is making a move - it's fleet
left Sarris V system for unknown direction.

It seems sky is getting darker...

Use two hands on either side of the armour to make it unidentifiable. Use telekinesis at random intervals to tap at the exact same position as your hands, so the message becomes veritably indistinguishable to observers, but will remain the same to Cagirates because it's at the same position as the CM's hands.
>Say the number of one of the following statements that is closest to your situation. Shake your head if none are close

+Giant Slayer+
Sulix gains tremendous bonuses in melee combat with monstrous creatures.(+30)

In addition to this, you can choose a reward that you can ask me for in our IRC channel. However bear in mind that I am changing our policy a little bit - Fate Points will now be earned ingame, while metagame rewards will be of a different kind. I heard someone wants to lose/gain some corruption?

As you are in the middle of tapping number 7, Larion Ursus enters the courtyard:
>Friend! You didn't tell me that you were going for my palace when you left the party. Why is that? He is accompanied by two of your Astartes, Locard and Ulson, who were assigned to the Honour Guard. They immediately salute you, but they stay at Larion's side. Cagirates bows and joins them in silence.

What do you do?

>The whole Ecclestiarchy business has me on edge, I should be returning to the Aspera with all due haste, I wanted to check on my honour guard one last time before I left. If worst comes to worst, Mormark and Varda need defending, and there are orbital defence systems to be readied, and messages to be sent. Would you object to me swapping over a few of the honour guard, Larion? I may not visit Tachion Primaris for a long, long while, and I'd rather not have my marines stagnate. Besides, there are plenty other battle brothers who want the honour of serving in the sectorum capitalis.

>I would of course understand if you chose to decline, but truth is brothers like...Cagirates have ample of experience that many other brothers lack, especially on the field of defence, as he proved during the Invasion of Mormark. He may be, amongst others, one of the very few brothers with sufficient knowhow to help me orchestrate Mormark's defence.

I understand of course. But I require one more thing of Cagirates. Brother, of the tactical scenario's presented, which would you find more favourable? The first, us not using our ships to defend mormark at all, the second, using only the aspera, third, using only the escorts, fourth, using all of them, fifth, abandoning Mormark, six, using only our ships to defend it. I don't believe I was at seven yet, but it seems to be much alike to six, only with the exception of our revenants remaining on the Mormarkian surface.

One of your Honor Guard is also a spy for the Cardinal, and I mean to find out who has betrayed his brothers if this is true. If I'd been able to recall the Honor Guard as planned, it would have been without risk, Lord. Locard, Ulson are not beyond suspicion. The spy had a writ of 'sanctioning' to do these deeds."

>I think there's another way to defend Mormark. What you should do is keep enemy at medium range, not engaging him directly and you should attempt to understand what made him choose to attack Mormark in a way such as this. There surely must be some reserve or back up force in the background that waits for it's time to strike upon the Mormarkian system. Never assume that all you see is true. However do not underestimate main enemy force, while it is only used to distract you, it can inflict heavy casualties, if unchecked.

Trap those and set up ambush points in them.

Scatter some of our scouts throughout the deep jungle, as well as our floating skulls, more for information relay than actual ambushing, but any ambushing opportunity should be capitulated on.

We have no solid evidence, yet the Ecclestiarchy have put aside their hate towards us, and are already in Vardan orbit. If you value us as your vassals, allies, friends, tools or pawns, you will send your ships to our relief. Chapter Master over.

In a little more than a week, two Ecclesiarchy ships appear on the edge of the system. 'Burning Glory' and 'Eternal Purity' are Cruiser and a Frigate, who immediately hail you.
>We have been sent from the 4th Ecclesiastic fleet in advance of a bigger force. We carry Frateris Militia regiments, they would be honoured to defend your civilians, however we'd prefer if they wouldn't see battle themselves. We also brought a limited armoured force attached to them.
>>
>>26418187
>We shall deploy your Frateris to the densest population areas, as a last line of defence for innocent lives, such a noble duty is fitting for men of the Ecclesiarchy.
>>
>>26418187
Attach the armoured force half to the civilian protection areas, and the other half to key anti-landing spots where our other holy machines are deployed. Get to consolidating our fleet with theirs.
>May your men and machines fight with honour, the enemy will not endure under our onslaught.
Tell the locals we're accepting volunteers, but only if they know the outlying jungles, can arm themselves, and are prepared for the risks. Work with them and the sixth to outline the jungles. Are orks still a threat at all?
>>
>>26418231
>>26418387
Withdraw as much of the civilian population as is reasonably possible into the gold mines to hide. Still protected by the Frateris.

"We are glad to have you with us. There may still be Orks lurking upon the planet and the Militia guarding them will free up our brothers to take the fight to the enemy."

Is the Ork mountain stronghold built into the mountain still intact from gold mining? Could we use that as a civilian hide/base?

Others can vote on it but I'm going with:

CM, 1st company, Dreadnought, thunderhawks, librarians on board battle barge.
5th company in the Krodian mountains which is where I assume the civilians are hiding because it has the mines.
6th company in the capital.
7th company in the jungle. Give them the warbikes and land speeders so they are our fast attack option. All other vehicles evenly split between 5th and 6th.

Frateris split evenly between mountains and capital.
>>
>>26418992
Horim should lend his inspiring presence to the ground forces, and one of our libs should be down there too.
>>
>>26418992
Alright adding Horim to the 6th in the capital as he wont be quite as vulnerable in city fighting as the baneblade.
Retribution to the mountains since it could hold a mountain pass all by itself.
Librarian Damokleon to the 7th to add his strength since they are a little under powered.
>>
>>26419034
>>26418992
I assume, that everyone is ok with this deployment scenario then.

Also, details about the system:

Inner Cauldron: Small planet/low gravity, extremely hot death world, this part of the sector has an asteroid cluster and is plagued with gravity riptide.

It's merely days away from the expected enemy arrival. Any last actions? Also, please roll d100
>>
>>26419227

where is Vaarda in the system?
>>
>>26419227
Have Chaplain Laptus fight with us forces on the battle barge.
Deploy Chaplain Tempestos to the 7th company, his close-combat prowess will be excellent there.
>>
>>26419227
alright well people in chat seem to want to use the Baneblade to defend Novomark's main gate IF it has a main gate and walls in which case swap Horim and Baneblade's positions.

Otherwise leave it the way it is

seems you forgot the Primary Biosphere and Outer Reaches, skargan.

>Primary biosphere: Asteroid belt, Large Planet/Low gravity Due to the cold temperature only shrubbery grow here the vast majority of the species are avian and hunt the deadly rodent making the majority of the biomass, Varda and it's moon

>Outer Reaches: large planet/High Gravity, ball of frozen material, has two moon, a large asteroid and a low mass moon

>Fleet Deployments:

>Frigate 'Eternal Purity'
Is to orbit Vaarda as if it were unaware of enemy fleet incoming.

>Cruiser 'Burning Glory' and Battlebarge 'Aspera Dominus'
Are to conceal themselves in the asteroid belt of the Primary Biosphere and run silent, waiting in ambush.
>>
>>26419432

also, Eternal Purity is to raise an alert in 'a panic'. on all frequencies and act as if they are alone in the system. Their mission is to make an 'escape' from the system, hopefully drawing the enemy's escorts into an ambush where Aspera and Burning Glory will crush them.

If the enemy fleet is too numerous for such an action, they will make a break for the system's edge and escape to raise the alarm from a neighboring system and alert additional Imperial forces.

Kentauros and Morbid send you a message that they are both 1 week away from Varda.
+++
You were in the middle of interesting conversation with Laptus about whether Horus Heresy was really inevitable, when suddenly ship alarms blare and your vox caster comes alive:
>Milord, we have four ships making entry into the system from warp. It's still hard to identify them, but their displacement statistics indicate two escorts, a cruiser and a battleship. They have set their course on Mormark!
Within minutes, you enter the main ship bridge. There Brethorius stops you with a smile:
>It seems these aren't the enemy ships, but 4th Ecclesiastic fleet! Maybe those monks ain't so bad afterall.
One of the Ecclesiarchy advisors who were sent to you to improve the cooperation of your forces and to make their deployment more smooth. He bows to you as you approach the cogitator screens and in a calm, tranquil voice requests your attention:
>My humble apologies, milord. I was instructed to ask so that you would speak with Bishop-Marshall as soon as possible. He is waiting on the channel LA-23.
You nod and put in the number of the channel into the screen. It shimmers for a few seconds and then you see a smiling face, a face you hoped you wouldn't see ever again.

Haran Dreifus, preacher who tried to make you bow to the Ministorium on Tachion Primaris, is looking at you with an evil glint in his eyes.
>So we meet again, Astartes. Yes, I recently received this luxurious promotion to command one of the sacred fleets that bow to Adeptus Ministorium. I guess Emperor wants the truth and justice to prevail after all. It is a shame, that you didn't bow when I asked you to. You claim to serve Him, but you do not know your place. It is a shame, that I am forced to do this, but I was given the holiest of duties - to grant you His Mercy. It is for the good of Imperium, Astartes. You will understand.
He turns in the screen, so that you could see him talking to a speaker:
>My brothers and sisters. The time has come. I order all the units loyal to the Mother Ecclesiarchy to initiate operation 'Divine Justice'. Spill the blood of the heretics, mutants and their foolish followers. Make them burn. Make them pay. Make them die.
With horror you realise what this cursed, wretched thing just did. You turn around and with a single strike decapitate advisor, who was preparing to detonate his suicide-vest. Renard and Sulix cut down his other lackeys, who are too slow and too weak to make their treacherous plans come true. Renard lifts his bloody face to look at you and whispers:
>They are not our allies... They are our enemies! Wait! Then what is..?

Suddenly Aspera Dominus roars in pain and its metal structure shakes as shot after shot tears into its void shields, penetrating them and reaching the ship itself. You understood that the mighty battleship would be able to withstand barrages like that for days before it's void shields would fail and that only one explanation remained. 'Burning Glory', Ecclesiastic cruiser that was lurking in ambush together with Aspera Dominus, opened it's broadside fire from extremely close range on a nearly defenceless target. You roar in rage and pain of betrayal, but you want to weep when you think what is happening at this very moment down below on the planet. Your Astarte brothers, mortal soldiers who swore you their lives and innocent civilians who knew nothing about what was happening, were all now being massacred by those whom they thought to be their allies. Penitent Engines cut into the masses of fleeing refugees with their razor-sharp blades, Immolator tanks melt brave marines who try to stop them and thousands of fanatical troops attack your fortifications from within. To call this a black day is to say nothing. This is single greatest betrayal you have suffered in your life. The bloodiest and most awful deed that you can think of since the times of Dropsite Massacre. And you realise that for the first time in your life you want to crush, maim and kill men, who claim to serve the Emperor. For decades to come, brothers told rumours and stories about how you reacted to the betrayal of Ecclesiarchy. Some claimed you stood silent, others said that you tore metal walls apart with your bare hands. Those who have been there that day keep their mouths shut and not even death will take this secret from them, however every marine who survived it remembers the terrible psychic howl that shook burning corridors of the ship that day.
