Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

You have entered, and escaped the Archonium. In so doing, you have confronted your Temerity, embraced your Humanity, and helped Abigail achieve balance and emerge relatively unscathed. It's a trial that will sit with you, and her, for the rest of your lives...but it's on you've beaten.

You stand alone and consider the future.

>Last time...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf-iFnUr9po

Exhausted as you are, you aren't prepared to sneak about, you're not about to let Abigail out of your sight while Fang is around. Not immediately, at least. You take a human form - the one you learned deep inside your own mind - and carry Abigail down the halls of Archon.

She falls asleep in your arms before you reach the first intersection.

You rise above the city's tunnels, and step onto the brick streets of the surface. A sky sits above you - normal white clouds against a pale blue expanse. Sparks of magic and the souls of people dashing to and fro snap at your senses. Abigail's warmth sits against your chest.

You gaze at her sleeping face. A wind rustles her hair. There's a lot you need to talk about. You feel your strength slowly returning...but there's a pain inside, a nub you cannot swallow. A lesion, left behind from what you experienced, but can't forget.

She must feel the same. You know she feels the same.

But maybe you can help each other with that. And with a lot of things.

The world you left behind months ago looms before you. You're back, and your challenges have only just begun.

But...somehow, you'll find your way. You usually do.
>>
I think we were planning on having A Talk with Abby.
>>
>>26550598
Having a talk with Abby -and- CONSUMING the fuck out of the Archonium.
>>
---------
---------

You stand at the balcony of Fang's tower, in the shape of a human, watching the city below. The distant sound of people walking and talking drifts up to you at a distance.

It's been several hours since you left the Archonium. You visited the Shadow mana pool and revitalized your strengths.

Flint's given you more than one questioning gaze. You're not sure how to even begin to tell him what happened inside that thing.

Abigail is sleeping soundly. You haven't disturbed her. She deserves a little rest.

You place a hand on the railing of the balcony and grip it tightly. You can feel a tension growing in your chest, twisting up tighter and tighter. She'll wake up soon enough. She'll want to talk about what happened.

What are you going to say? How the hell are you going to explain yourself?

And perhaps more fightening - what is -she- going to say?

You rub your face. Worry won't help you. You need to put your mind back on task.

But it feels like you've lived an entire life, separated from the world, and then suddenly been thrust back within it, hit the ground running, so to speak. So much to do; so much to think about.

Flint needs to be healed, his soul restored. That should be priority. He told you that Fang's spell is nearly ready, but he'll have to venture to find the other half of the Shel'kath to end it permanently, and the whole situation reeks of suspicion.

Hopefully Fang's old promise to go with you after you find that Staff of Winds will hold...though after recent events, your relationship is more than a touch strained. You don't even really know where to start on that, but he probably has an idea as to its location, at least.

You don't want Fang as an enemy, but dammit...after what he did to Abigail, how can you trust him? Though you never could trust him to begin with, he's not...evil. Just...well, maybe Abigail's explanation was the best. He's been doing what he's doing for so long, it's a bad habit.

Assuming you found the staff, it might be powerful enough to ease the winds keeping the earth elemental, Geb, trapped. Even now he stomps about the Southeastern Wastelands, caugh in a never ending cyclone and maddened by his own parasite - one of Light magic. Even if you freed him from the wind, you'd have to somehow deal with that thing to calm him down. If he even wants to be calm after suffering for so long.

...that's a whole lot of -ifs- for Geb.

You've also got two of the four keys that could unlock Hecate's prison. Flint seems to think that a family heirloom back in Arland might be the Wind key. As to the location of the fire key, you have no leads, yet. Obis seems like a likely candidate to know more, considering he's descended from fire mages that once worked under Logi, the Fire Elemental.

But supposing you made unsealing the elementals a priority - you've learned that Erebus was never really on the side of the other lesser elementals. He abandoned Geb, and convinced the other two, Leviathan and Hecate, to seal themselves away. And then he destroyed the four Greater Elementals all at once.

What was he planning? Simply to destroy them all? Why? Because they were chaos, and he was order? For all Temerity's insistance that order and chaos can never exist peacefully, and for all the evidence you've seen that this may in fact be the case, you have to ask yourself: What kind of a motivation is that? Did he even bother to attempt coexistence? What could possibly push Erebus to take on the entire world?

The former Shadow Lord is a question mark within your own head. Perhaps that should be your next goal - find the remaining shards, and finally put to rest the ghost of Erebus. The elf queen, Ellendra Kalladar, could probably help you there; you'd have to visit the elvish isles. Perhaps, after you secured your Humanity, she made a recovery?

You glance down. The varied rooftops of the academy perched atop Archon's fortress offer no simple solutions.

But if that were all that was on your plate, you'd almost be having an easy time. On top of these concerns, two demon lords are currently running free in Kelvere. Auriel is planning to put together an alliance to face the Kanian demon army as a single spear out of Arland. Flint features as a relucant star in her plan, as do the factions within the Great Forest and Archon itself. How exactly she expects werewolves and orcs - beings created as mutated soldiers by Archon during its wars with the Empire - to work together with Fang, you don't know.

And then there's the angels, and the Black Lady. You know Sandalphon must be gathering his strength again quickly, but he's been quiet so far. He's probably planning something. The Black Lady's country, Vampiria, shielded by the Valendrak Peaks, is equally silent - but with the rest of the world at war, will she keep it that way? Both are wildcards that could flip this entire thing upside down in an instant.

There's a lot to do, and you need to get doing.

What comes first?

>Find the Staff of Winds. It's the next immediate step to fullfill your end of the bargain on getting Flint's parasite removed.
>Focus on gathering the keys to free Hecate. The Goddess of Spirit would be a powerful ally in taking on the demons, and she might know more about you, yourself.
>Find Ellendra Kalladar to gain more insight into your nature, and gather the rest of your shards. Temerity said he would help you locate them. Power will be needed to face the coming trials.

We have to get it to free Geb anyway, and this gets us closer to helping Flint. And the sooner we get it, the sooner Fang is done using it on his machines... so the sooner he can give it to us to finish business with Geb.

I'm still quite worried about this.

Not the long-term consequences, which SM put to rest, but the immediate political consequences for Abby, and for us.

If we just eat it by our own volition, we get all the blame for ourselves (it has to be explained why the artifact just disappeared, doesn't it?)

If Abby gives it to us when she becomes archmage (if she can give it to us) then she will get blamed for it's nonexistance and be as hated (or worse) as fang.

It's potentially a massive upgrade, but one which we should prepare for to soften the political blow to our allies, though how we do that is questionable.

With my ranting concluded:

I do wonder how much time visiting her would take, anyway. If we just want to talk, it might be a quick in-and-out whereas the staff is a larger quest. But SM has a way of introducing complications.

Right now, though, I really want to talk to Fang about something.

Fang is hated because in his first 2 years he made the Spirit Blight that led to the Ring City Empire training water and earth mages to create ridiculously fertile lands that pretty much screwed over any chance of Archon ever winning against them. He then became a lich and refused to step down.

Fang is the worst archmage ever. A complete fuck up from day 1. I don't think Abby could screw up things more if she tried.

Handing over the device that has kept the Great Families full of powerful mages would still be very bad, even though it doesn't reach the scale of apocalyptic plague.
It's less "Fucking up the world" and more "Specifically pissing off the people in power"

Abby will also "Inherit" a large amount of hatred from Fang, for being his Niece ("Fang is just making a puppet leader"), and for her being rushed through the system.

You think, and consider, and argue within yourself - but one thought sits above the others. You will never really repay the debt you owe Donovan Flint. The least you can do is fulfill the promise you made so long ago. The staff brings you closer to many goals, but most importantly, it moves you closer to finding a cure for that element-forsaken parasite.

You hear the sound of the balcony door opening behind you. You don't need to turn to see who it is. You could just focus your gaze behind you. This shell of a man you're wearing is just that - shell. But you glance back over your shoulder anyway.

It's Abigail. She's in a plain white outing dress. You meet each other's gazes for a moment.

She walks up beside you and leans on the railing. The two of you watch the city for a long time. You don't say anything.

"...Shadow...Erebus."

<Shadow,> you say. <Erebus is long dead.>

<Do you prefer talking like this?> Abigail asks. Her lips don't move, but the sound of her voice blooms in your head. Telepathy.

<It is what comes naturally. I didn't realize you could.>

<I picked it up. It's faster like this, anyway. Thoughts, I mean.> She sighs. <You showed me a lot of things. You...rejected the part of you that wanted to go back to being more like you were. Like Erebus.>

<Yes.>

<How come?>

You shut your eyes. That wouldn't stop you seeing, but you shut whatever part of you sees, as well, blending human motion with your action. <I embraced Humanity.>

There is a long pause. You can practically feel Abigail composing her words.

<So,> she says, <you mean...you embraced what formed out of that vision you experienced? With...um...you and me?>

<I think so.> You desperately try not to think about the vision itself. <I decided that it was more important than whatever happened so long ago. I decided that I...> You trail off. You can't find the words.

<You decided that what you choose to be is more important than what you are,> Abigail finishes. <Or what you were.>

<Yes.>

<I'm glad.> She turns from the rail and faces you. You face her. <Shadow,> she says. <I did some things...well.> She stops, takes a breath. <It's fuzzy, but I remember what the parts of me did...how they felt...but it's all one thing, now. I'm just me. So...I guess what I'm trying to say is that what each part did by itself doesn't reflect how I think and feel, now that I'm together. At the same time, it's a little bit of all of them, all joined up to make something new.> The last part comes out in a hurry. <What's between us, exactly?>

<There is... love between us. I know that. The nature of that love is muddled, and confusing. It was the love of a parent for a daughter, before. But now... I don't know what it is. A wise knight once said to me that defining love is a tricky proposition, and I have come to understand that. He also told me to hold it close, but give it room. It was mentioned threads ago that shadows "Love" for Abagail is closest to the "Agape" form of love, Unconditional love as it is. The love that made us follow her across the world and into madness.

But it's pretty clear we aren't really any kind of parental figure to her.
We were less mature than her when we met.
If there is a familial analogy at all, it would be closer to siblings, or step-siblings.

We should really ask her how she's coping. She's spent more years in the Archonium than out of it and she just figured out she's a half-demon.

We should get her dad's diary from Fang. She deserves to read it.
>>

Indeed. We should talk to Fang before we go, about that and other things.

I want to ask about something Michael said to Auriel in Ring City - he said that the angelic blessing (which is imprinted on her soul) was not gone, only dormant, and that it might be possible to reignite it. I figure if anyone knows about dicking with souls, it's Fang.

You're not sure how to put it, so you just say it as plainly as you can. <There is love between us, Abby.>

Abigail draws back slightly. Her face turns redder than a a tomato. "Uh...um..."

You scramble to clarify. <Well, what I mean, is...that nature of that love...it's muddled. Confusing.>

"...I'm - I - well - I'm confused too." In her embarrassment, she abandons her telepathy. "I'm...not sure what to say."

<Me neither.> You stand in silence for a moment. But eventually...you do know what to say. <A knight you may have heard of told me that defining love is a tricky proposition. He told me to hold it close, but give it room. I will not shy from it, but I will not push it, either. The nature of my love for you has changed over time. But what that means...or what it is...I do not know. This is all new for me.>

By the time you've finished speaking, the blush has mostly left Abigail's face, replaced by a small smile. "To be honest, it's new for me, too."

<I guess it would be.>

"Um...here's what I think," she says. "I think...a lot happened. And...well...emotions were running high...so..." She sighs. "Why is this so hard?! Dammit!" You blink at the swear. She covers her mouth. "Um...sorry."

<...it's fine. Just didn't expect it.>

"Oh. Well...jeeze." She rubs the back of her neck. The blush begins to creep back. "I feel like you, sort of. But I guess...I think we should get to know each other better, before we...um...you know. Well, we need time." Her face firms up as she finally manages to settle on a point. "We've had time...but it was all spent while we were running, or surviving, or just trying not to die. We've never had time for each other. So...how about, at least as far as things between us go, we just think of it as a clean slate?"

Honestly, I think an anon a few threads ago put it best. We're not so much her "father" but considering our age and total development at the time I prefer to look at ourselves as the older kid taking care of the younger kid (older foster brother) who took on the role of father to the younger child. And with time that has naturally developed into the raw beginnings of an actual relationship. Lets just see what happens
>>
>>26551445
But we would finish the Shape(?) tree. And therefore gain a passive wouldn't we?
>>
>>26551445
why not? seeing as we attack physically most of the time anyway.
>>
>>26551460
We end fights too quickly with our strength buffs. Poison is more for drawn out mage fights with some physical stuff thrown in. SM confirmed.
>>
>>26551427
Shadefang poison is expensive and has a percentile chance of working anyways.
There isn't really a "consume passive"

>>26551438
The only other option that people were going for at the time was the Moon/Eclipse, which would also have been wrong.
>>
>>26551445
SM said we've poisoned a few times, but honestly beast through most things before full effect.
>like how in our fight while disguised and Jun our poison stopped our foe from regenerating his arm but we killed him with the next attack and it didn't matter
>>
the tree that has poison in it is 3/4s not poison at all.
>>
>>26551460
I think the point is that we focus on blasting our enemies with so much piss that they're dead in 1-3 rounds. That's why a DoT isn't so good for us.
>>
>>26551489
>There isn't really a "consume passive"

>>
>>26551478

Poision would have been dead handy against the penguin.

<I think I do,> you say slowly. <An actual relationship...without all the pressure.>

Abigail nods, and her smile widens. "Yeah."

<...then...>

You hesitate for a long time.

There is something darker than your Temerity that trembles inside of you.

It is fear.

Will she reject you?

"...then what?" Abigail asks.

<Where I'm going...there will be a lot of pressure,> you say. <It won't be an easy road. What I am thrusts me into the center of the conflicts that tear at Venia. If you walk with me...if peace is what you seak, maybe you just deserve someone normal. I...>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACQIoZ8Nn8Q

Abigail embraces you.

You didn't expect it. She holds you tight, keeping her arms wrapped around your lower back. You gently hug her in return.

She lets you go, and gives you a stern look. "It took you a bit...but you kept your promise. It's my turn to protect you."

<Abby...>

She puts her hands on her hips. "Abby what? 'Abby, don't come, it could be dangerous? Abby, I'm an elemental, how can our love ever be? Abby, blah-blah-blah, I'm worried things won't work out because of things that haven't even happened yet?' Jeeze, Shadow, why'd you think I came out here to talk if you didn't think I'd already thought over those things a hundred times already?" She drops her arms and grins. "Besides, you still owe me a dance."

<...y-you too.>

"Huh?"

<Actually...I don't know how to dance.>

Abigail looks surprised, and then she giggles. "Yeah, I guess you wouldn't, huh? Well, you learn fast. And you can just grow extra legs if you need to balance, anyway."

<Huh. I guess so.> You nod to her. <I'm glad we spoke, Abby. I'm...very glad.>

"Me too."

<...I know...> You step a bit closer to her. <...I was in there for a long time. You were in there even longer.>

Her focus fades. She just nods. "...I was."

<If you ever want to talk about it...I'm here.>

"Yeah. I know."

Well, if the Archonium vision is anything to go by, we're incapable of fathering kids.

Then again, I'm not sure whether we can trust any of the "real world" knowledge we may have gained from the vision.

Guys, is it possible that the Elf Queen's message wasn't a true message, but instead Shadow's desire to somehow be free from the petty conflicts that divide Venia? What if the new Order/Chaos dichotomy was Shadow's attempt to consolidate his understanding of the world?

I doubt SM would throw this angle at us and then later back down, but it's an interesting thought.

You tell Abigail about your current goal - to find the staff of winds and help Sir Flint. She's shocked by the news of the Shel'kath - which she never knew of while she was just a girl - but resolves to help you as much for Flint's sake as yours.

<Before the battle at Evinbrook,> you say, <I went back to Jacob's Field...and I investigated your home.>

Abigail nods. "I remember when you told me, back...inside."

<Your father write a diary. The archmage has it now, but if you asked, I think he'd probably return it to you.>

"I see." She sighs. "That means I'll have to talk to him again."

<About the archonium...> You eye her. <How would you feel if it...just went away?>

"Fan-fuckingtastic," she spits. You blanch in terror. Abigail bites her lip, then coughs. "Uh...for a while, I thought saying bad words without anyone to tell me to stop was...cool. Got boring fast."

Fang is there. He looks at Abigail. She stares back at him, silent. He clears his throat. "...about your position here."

"I don't - "

"Please," Fang says. The word sounds odd in his mouth. Rusty. "Let me finish. Please, Abigail."

Abigail folds her arms, but nods.

Fang looks past you both, out over the city. "A long time ago...my father sent me into the Archonium. I was 22 years old - 13 years more experienced than you. I only spent months inside, but what I experienced there..." He stops, shakes his head. "I never forgave him. I thought that, my family...when I...when my son..." Fang's jaw clenches tight. "It doesn't matter anymore. But I thought that I would do things differently. I thought that, despite having changed by that thing, I would be better than him. I was wrong. It is only now that I realize...truly understand how he felt. Moreso, even. The pressure on his shoulders to compete with angels that have hundreds of years of experience, veterans of a war that tore our world into pieces. The sheer desperation."

"Don't spoon me justifications," Abigail says. They're harsh words, but her voice is quiet. "Just say what you wish to say."

"I do not expect your forgiveness," Fang says. "I do not deserve it. But I did what I did because I believed that you...would fix my mistakes. That you could bring Archon to a better place. That under your leadership...maybe you would not need such a terrible thing any longer." He inhales, straightens, and looks at her. "Should you wish, with your current strength, a seat on the council could be yours. I don't wish to hear your answer immediately. But...there are many people in this city that could use your strength."

But she clearly formed a bond, most likely for her a fatherly bond. Since she needed someone to replace her parents when they died. We are more like a negligent father who came riding in when she was in trouble. This is clearly an unhealthy obsession for her.

I was posting lots of doom and gloom about it, and I wanted to eat it eventually.

I just wanted to do it after establishing a reason other than reactive anger, working around the consequences of it's disappearance, and hopefully after finding out a little bit more about the device's origin.

With fang siding with "Get rid of it" I'm feeling a bit less worried.
>>
>>26551848
Directly after she lost her parents? It is much more likely we replaced an already existing role in her life. Particularly since she was so young and highly dependent on her parents.
>>
"Are you serious about what you said?" Abigail asks. "About the Archonium?"

A fire lights in Fang's eyes, a fierceness that you haven't seen since he blasted through the Palthair mines. "Abigail, I hate that thing more than you can possibly imagine."

"I seriously doubt that," Abigail says. She glances at you. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

Even though the words are telepathic, you can feel the spit you put into them. <I'm thinking -exactly- what you're thinking.>

Abigail storms foward, brushing past her uncle. You stay right on her tail. Fang hurredly follows, and you draw Adavan along when you pass through the entrance ot Fang's tower. In short order, she leads you back through the halls and into the Archonium's chamber.

"Shadow," she says. She gestures toward the artifact with an inviting hand.

<With pleasure.>

"Wait," Fang says. "You're not going to - "

Abigail turns on him in an instant. "You want me to consider what you said? Then prove it."

"...I understand what you mean," Fang says. "But if you destroy this thing...Archon is not in a position where the council at large could approve or even appreciate this move. You could never be a councilor. You would be run out of the city."

"Then I don't want to be a councilor. And we'll be leaving shortly, anyway."

"Abby - "

"Don't even try it," Abigail says. "You want me to give you a chance? Here it is." She strides up to him, and in that moment you see the Empress within her. "Do you have a single ounce of your heart left? Do you care at all for me? Did you care about my father?"

"...I loved your father," Fang says quietly. "He was my brother."

"Then shut up and stand back. Or, prove you're a hypocrite, and try and stop us."

Fang's lips move as his brain rattles for the words. But after a moment, he drops his hand, closes his mouth, and takes a step back.

Abigail looks to you expectantly.

Yes. I've agreed on that the whole time. You seeming to think it has to be either a fatherly or motherly one was the only thing I found disagreeable.
>>
There's more debate on this than I suspected.

-----------
------------

On one hand, you've got a sort of way to speed up time to train powerful mages...although it is really a lot more dangerous than that. You've also got Abigail's future in Archon to consider; it's immediate political suicide for her to destroy this thing.

On the other hand, she doesn't seem to care all that much about a political position in Archon. Her face tells you she's never been more sure of anything in her entire life.

And frankly, you wouldn't be sad to see it go.

Fang already told you that everyone in the archonium that didn't make it out is dead. It's not a memorial...it's a gravestone.

What do you do?

We should get into it for the stuff we'll need to complete other trees. Otherwise relying on Abby for summons would be a better idea.
>>
We could finish the physical shadow tree and get Pure Darkness.

PD is very good. VERY good.

>Pure Darkness - You can now use your shadow without a light source. Shadow attacks from stealth are just as strong as normal.

That means we can shadow dominate anywhere. Slice people up with auras anywhere. We can even use our abilities up in the air where there is nowhere for a shadow to be cast (SM confirmed earlier during a fight when I asked to use shadow physical shadow abilities in the air)
>>
>>26552661

>>
I actually want to buy earth's gift if we get tree gift for Abby. It'd be the perfect compliment to her other skills. She'll have attack, defence, healing and shaping the earth with earthforge.
>>
>>26552649
Why Earth magic?

Shadow would be so much better. It would let her use Eclipse once we unlock it.
>>
>>26552681
All available abilities in the physical shadow tree add up to 85 and there are far more abilities we haven't unlocked.
>>
>>26552695
Because we'll need some stuff from it to finish the physical and magic shadow trees.
>>
>>26552695
We might not have her with us all the time. Plus twice as many summons getting summoned.
>>
>>26552706
Healing, constructs to add to her summoned army, etc.
>>
Sm how is edgy quest going
>>
>>26552666
I'd like to save ~20 exp so we can get stuff on the fly.

And saving 15 exp for a mana pool in Haven would give us a reliable recharge point and help them massively.

I'm mostly for getting Void Ring because it is a dramatic upgrade fitting for the magnatude what we've done.

>>26552705
Except that spirit does barriers really well, and earth tree is largely constructs, which would be drawing from the same pool of mana that her summons are, without the natural proficiency.
>>
The Earth tree is probably the most versatile we've seen. Abby is very strong with offence since she has all those summons and spirit. I want to give her some defence.
>>
"Well?" Abigail asks you.

<...with pleasure.>

You stand before the archway. Orange fire sits in the depths of the twisted steel posts, flickering, but unmoving. The silver sheen of the entrance reflects the room with an oily, rainbowed hue.

Time and time again, when you were in the archonium, you suppressed your emotion. You forced your tears back. You pushed down anger. You ignored your fear.

Everything you bottled up comes raging out of you in an instant.

You cast yourself over the steel. It resists you. But you will not be denied. It begins to dissolve, and a powerful, ancient magic long since forgotten is released. Bits and pieces here and there escape you and bleed away, but you're like a net - some fish slip through the holes, but the majority are hauled back to the surface. You devour the archonium, and its power.

>EXP: 103

"...it's really gone," Fang says. "...just like that." He looks at Abigail. "...where will you go?"

"With Shadow," Abigail says, "to find the Staff of Winds. And you had better keep your promise to help Sir Flint."

"...I will." Fang nods. "The staff will help supplement Archon's...new vulnerability."

<Are you worried?> you ask. <What will the council think?>

"The council will want her head," Fang says. "But a lot of people have wanted her head. I will deal with it. But moreover...many disliked the device. It will not be particularly missed...-if- we gain the staff."

<Do you have any information on it?> you ask. <I need a lead.>

"Indeed you do," Fang said. "And I owe you the first half of the payment."

Fang walks out of the room. You and Abigail exchange a glance, then quickly move to follow him.

>con't
>>
>>26552756
She had a spirit shield that held off Dave while he was going full tentacles.
>>
You trail him at a distance. Abigail glances at you. <Hey, Shadow?>

<Yes?>

<Remember way back when...I've felt Adavan's extra power since I woke up.>

<I wasn't sure if you'd still be interested.>

Abigail smiles. <I'd be honored to share your abilities...if that's ok with you.>

<It might be a smart move. Where we're going...you'll need the strength.>

Satisfied, Abigail nods to you, and you hurry after Fang.

>>
>>26552782
finish water tree. finish servant tree. servant abby
>>
>>26552671
In order to finish that middle gray blob, summoning will need to be invested in just a little first, not even that much experience since Ghost is 3 and the next step in between wouldn't that much more experience comparatively. And being completely quiet except when we wish to make noise is a big fucking boost to stealth. Only reason I advocate getting Summoning I also is that would make both Ghost and whatever comes after it useful. Summoning also has a branch that could be a per-requisite for Shadow Totem coming off of Ghoul, which is another fucking useful thing to think about.
>>

People who are calling summoning shit are looking at the ONLY ONE summon per skill on the summon tree restriction as well as the mana cost for ordering it.

Then theres a chance of the summon going rogue.
>>
>>26552898
This.

>>
How about we make her a Servant now, and a chosen later on.

Steep investment, but frankly I think it's worth it. We're going to need more Servants in the future, anyway - we've got a war coming.

Guys, what if completing the servant tree reduces the cost for chosen like servant's was reduced.
>>
>>26552893

Yes. Anything that the chosen upgrade don't improve or override is maintained.

For example: mirrored resistance overrides shared resistance.

Another example: Shadow Gift gives servants several shadow magic spells. These are kept by all chosen, in addition to whatever else they get.

Void ring will be nice for a "Fuck everything in the general vicinity" power.
>>
>>26552897
Yes right now because if not now, then never. People have avoided that tree this whole time and will avoid it for as long as they can. We have 103 experience, even with the three spent for Ghost alone would still leave 100 fucking experience left. The one summon we have, wispbro, has saved our ass when we were stuck in Michael's rape tower, and made sure to tell Flint about our problems. Another summon won't be too bad for us and would serve as bait to distract enemies with if for no other reason. It's also obviously required for something really useful, but people can't seem to get into the tree. I blame Xella for all of this.

I am not saying making her a servant or chosen automatically makes her insane. I am just saying that despise her grow and experiences Archonium giving her a considerable among of power like all at once, might be unwise. I could go to her head similarly like the power the Empress held. Not completely insane but easily to abuse.

>>26553608
Mana pools are used as "generators" for magical tech. Both Archon and the Ring City use them for power.
Building one in Haven would let them start upgrading, and using stuff from the wreck of the Noraleiv more effectively.

As for flying to mana pools, we have to remember that we can't fly too much, or the skysever will overpower us.
>>
>>26553594
>>26553607
And we need to buy other skills for other things, that we need in other cases and for other abilities. It's kind of silly to think it's funny just because we had other priorities.
I agree that the poision tree could be nice, but there are other things we could get that the majority seems to think is more useful. Saying we need poision resistance because we might get poisioned is like saying we need summons because we might want to summon something stronger. It's obvious as fuck and not really ironic at all, we just have other priorities.

Fang leads you back to the tower. Adavan and Flint are waiting on the first floor, standing together. When they see you march in, they look at each other, then at you.

"Both of you, with us," Fang says sharply. They fall in line.

Following Fang as a group reminds you of the first time you met him back in the Palthair Mines. He seemed rather indestructible, then. But his weakness, apparently, is a young woman gliding forward beside you.

You reach his study. Fang steps behind his desk, produces a key, and casts a spell as he unlocks a drawer. You can feel a weave of spirit as complex as anything you've felt unravel as the drawer slides open. You're glad you never pried into his private things - though the way he uses the room as a silent command center for all Archon, you would have hardly had a chance anyway.

He draws out several documents - a faded, yellow ledger, bound by string, that looks ready to fall apart - and several leaves of paper, equally aged. Fang begins to spread out the papers, and you realize they form a sort of map.

It looks like a forest. There are markings and drawings in a strange language - but you can Translate them easily. You read a few of them. 'Landing site', 'lake', 'greater forest', 'plains', 'deep forest: caution'. It's all hand drawn, and marked over in several places as the author updated it over time.

Fang puts a hand on the ledger and stares at Flint. "Something I recovered a long time ago, before I was an archmage...on a certain adventure, shall we say. The journal of the head of the Goddavis."

Flint draws back. "What?! Are you sure?!"

"Do I look unsure to you?"

"Who are they?" Abigail asks. You're curious yourself.

"...my ancestors," Flint says. "The Flint family is a branch of the Goddavis, one of the Great Families of Xile."

Adavan nods sagely. "Ah. The mystery of the floating isles. A shame it was after my time. Just by a few years, too."

Chosen Gives a large stat boost, but no immediate defensive abilities unless you get army of darkness.

Multishade on top of her usual barriers will make her incredibly slippery.

Remember how hard it was to get to get a hit in on Whatshisface the evil lich?
>>
"According to our records," Flint says, "they were the only survivors of the sky-sever. Apparently, they disagreed with the method, thinking it too extreme. They abandoned the islands before the Black Hand attacked. When the spell was activated..."

Fang nods. "The Black Hand was annihilated - along with Xile. The remains are probably still inside the core of the sky-sever. That is the location of the staff of winds."

You stare at it, hard. <...that forest...is that the great forest?>

"It is," Fang says. "How did you guess?"

<I've flown over it more than once now.>

"Well, you'd share perspective with a wind mage that was flying through the air, wouldn't you?" Fang grins his evil grin, then plods a finger on the center of the map, the section marked 'landing site'. "The craft they used to escape was an airship - and one with an wind-based dynamo. That kind of power should be able to pierce the barrier around the remains of Xile. I believe it's still buried at this very spot, but I've had a problem getting to it."

<What problem?>

"Firstly, this map is old, hand drawn. It's garbage. I can narrow it down to, oh, ten square miles or so, but that still isn't helpful."

"Why not?" Adavan asks. "Magic that strong should be easy to detect."

"It's concealed," Fang says, "via methods unknown to me. From what I could translate, it can be sensed only by members of the family proper." Fang looks at Flint. "And that's where you come in."

It suddenly strikes you that the real reason Fang was willing to help Flint was because he would be usedful in more ways than he first let on.

>con't
>>
>>26553805

Do the math.
>>
Flint leans over the map. There's a glint in his eye - a sort of excitement that you remember seeing from him only once or twice. He sees a new knighthood laid out before him, a legend in the making. A chance to make something happen. "Ten miles...that's doable. We could find it. We could do this."

<Flint, we're talking about the sky-sever,> you say. <I can barely survive it for more than a minute before it forces me to land. You're a competent fighter, but this is magic on the scale of the entire world.>

"The airship will take care of that," Flint says. His voice is rising. "This is about the Flints - the Goddavis! My family's history...damn, what my father would make of this!" Flint rubs his hands together. "Imagine...we could be the first to set foot on Xile in 700 years. The staff of winds!"

"Remember," Fang says flatly. "That's my payment, not a family heirloom."

Flint waves him off. "Right. Well, there's sure to be plenty of other things worth restoring to their rightful owners - my family."

Fang looks skeptical, but sighs, and reveals something from a pocket in his robe. It's a necklace with an orange crystal. It reminds you faintly of the crystals back in the archonium - the ones the Banshee made.

Fang nods at your glance. "A mana crystal. I've forged it over this past month." He holds it to Flint. "Go ahead. Take it."

Flint frowns suspiciously, then reaches out a hand.

>con't
>>
>>26553786
I'd be hesitant to give her the Earth tree (assuming we agree to give her Chosen) at this point - we're not very invested in it, and it actually has a good bit of overlap with Spirit (notably between constructs and summons).
Water looks pretty bangin' though, and we can see the entire tree (and will probably buy the entire tree, soonish). If I were to vote on a tree to grant Abby, it would be Water.

Poitn is moot - we voted against Chosen, let alone Chosen+Tree Gift.
>>
It glows brightly when he touches it. You focus hard, and you can see it's effect - the Shel'kath writhes uncomfortably. Its hooks and tendrils separate somewhat from Flint's soul...but it still remains latched tight.

"That will keep it from actively interfering," Fang says. "But it won't improve your condition."

"My condition?" Flint asks. "You know, really...I don't feel that bad. Sick, I mean. Should something like this drain my energy?"

Fang gives him a disdainful smile. "You have no idea."

"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

"A lesser man would be bedridden, weak, practically unable to move," Fang says. "The fact that you're up and walking around speaks to how much potential you have."

"...I...have potential?" Flint seems stunned by the prospect.

"Obviously. You see yourself as average, but you're walking around with a three-ton weight on your back." Fang looks at him, then at the rest of you. "The Flints can do what they wish with the rest of Xile. I only want the staff. Bring that back, and I'll finish the job."

<You had better keep your promise,> you tell Fang.

>con't
>>
"Oh...I will," Fang says. "In fact, I'm looking forward to helping the good knight personally. I can't wait to see Arcturis's face when I waltz into Archon."

Flint looks annoyed for a moment, but then it turns to curiosity. "Just how do you plan on doing that, exactly? I mean...you, in Archon?"

"Simple," Fang says. "I'll personally lead a group of handpicked diplomats on a mission of peace and friendship. We all must work together in these dark times."

That gets your wheels turning. Something to tell Auriel, maybe? Either way...Fang's still plotting as quickly as always. He never fails to adapt.

Flint busies himself gathering up all the papers. Adavan flips through the journal, frowning here and there at some passages. Fang glances at you. "If there's anything you need to do here in Archon...get it done. I need to move." He heads for the door.

"Where are you going?" Abigail asks.

"To clean up the mess we just made," he says. "I need to mobilize my resources." He stops with his hand on the study door. "...Abigail."

"...yes?"

"...truly...I am sorry." He pushes through the door, and it shuts closed behind him.

<...he seems sincere,> you offer.

"...yeah," she says quietly.

<Perhaps we can break them of those bad habits. Someday.>

"...yeah."

You share a quiet moment, then.

What do you do now?

Think back to my description of Archon, back in the the 30s. The mana pools themselves are heavily studied, are reinforced by magical spells and enchantments to keep them stable, and have large constructs with draw power and channel it to all parts of the city. They provide power to the floating public transports and magical defenses, as well as mundane things like light the halls of the fortress.

It would be like walking into a power plant and ignoring the maintenance crew while you supercharge Abigail with electric juice.

<Alright, everyone. I'm flying us to Haven.>

Adavan purses his lips, nods. Flint lights up instantly. It's been a while since he's seen Auriel.

"Where's Haven?" Abigail asks.

Flint smiles. "You'll see." His smile freezes on his face...and then it starts to drain away, until all that is left is the cold face of fear. "...did you say...flying?"

<Indeed I did.>

"NO!" You grab Flint and lift him into the air. He kicks helplessly. "NO! NO! NO!"

<Just lie back and think of Auriel.>

Flint lets his limbs drop. He closes his eyes. "I'm on the ground. I'm on the ground, and there's nothing wrong." You gather up Adavan, who is more curious than anything, along with Abigail. She laughs and spreads her arms out at you step onto the balcony. "On the ground, on the ground, on the grouuuuuuAAAAAHHHHH!!!!"""

Abigail grins and shouts over the rush of wind as you zip out Fang's tower. "Wooo-hooo! Come on Shadow, that all you got?"

<Hardly.>

Flint shouts himself hoarse until the sheer speed of your flight erases the sound of his voice.

--------------
BOOM
--------------

Your supersonic cuts out. You circle the land above Haven - but you don't see it. Odd. Trees everywhere you look.

You start to descend, ignoring Flint's kicking and screaming. "Jeeze!" Abigail shouts. "Since when were you such a big baby?"

"If men were supposed to fly, we'd have wings, dammit!"

"I have wings," Adavan says.

"That doesn't count!!"

You feel an odd sensation as you drift between the branches of the trees...and you discover that they aren't trees at all, but an illusion. Haven blooms into your vision. Of course - Hamil's spell is finished! You'll have to congratulate him later.

"Shadow!!" Auriel is running - and her sword is out. "Compress your power, now! All of you!"

Adavan doesn't hesitate. He throws a barrier of spirit around you. You draw your aura about them as well, push your power inward, and go still.

You feel a flash of light. Auriel throws herself to the ground. Her soul dims to just a tiny candle.

You hear a rush of wind, and feel bright flares of light soaring over you in a tight bundle. You glance toward the sky.

Angels - ten or twenty of them. They're flying in strict formation. They circle a wide expanse of the forest, once, twice, and then move on into the deeper woods.

Auriel clambers from the ground and rushes over to you. You gently release your friends. Adavan brushes himself off, and lets his shield drops. Flint runs to meet Auriel.

They embrace. Auriel coats Flint with kisses, then just holds him. "Dammit, that was close."

"What was that about, exactly?"

The residents of Haven slowly reappear. Most of them hid within buildings, or inside the now expanding fort in the middle of the clearing. You see Ila, Cain, and Hamil making their way over.

"The patrols just started...I don't know. Three days ago. We haven't had any word from the orcs, but the elves and werewolves got through. There's a huge encampment surrounding that clearing - the one with the big meeting stone, where we all first gathered."

"...what?" Flint frowns. "Why now? What's going on?"

"I don't know," Auriel says. "Maybe they figured out Shadow's flight pattern, or one of the regular patrols sensed something, or they're establishing an eastern flank on Kelvere where the demon lords can't sense. Or they just feel like rooting out Archon's scraps before they turn to Arland. Could be anything."

Flint shakes his head. "No. Not a coincidence."

<...something's up,> you say. <We should look into it.>

>con't
>>
>>26554396
Oh shit, nice catch there.
I dunno if we wanna tell anyone at Haven we're ex-Erebus yet, mostly because the angels probably wouldn't like that, but maybe we could mention to her that we snuffed out a sun while we were gone. Just for shits.
>>
>>26554396

"I was waiting on you for that," Auriel says. "Ila wanted to go ahead...but you're the shadow. By the way, where have you been? I though you'd be back a day or two ago. Also...ah, who's this?" She gestures to Abigail.

You exchange a glance with her. <That...is an extremely long story.>

"Um...I...remember you, a bit," Abigail says. She curtsies. "My name is Abigail, Highest."

Auriel looks taken aback. And then something passes over her face. She slowly shakes her head. "...by the light. He put you through archonium. ...how long?"

"...11 years."

Auriel slowly closes her eyes, takes a breath, and then opens them. She walks forward, and offers her hand. Abigail takes it. Auriel clasps her hands together over Abigail's. "...I've seen many years, child. I know. The pain does not pass swiftly. But it will pass."

Abigail blinks rapidly. "Ah, thank you, Highest."

"...for you, Auriel will do just fine."

Abigail just nods.

"Shadow!" Ila says. They finally reach you. "I'm glad you're here. That was a close one."

<The illusion is working well, Hamil. I didn't notice a thing.>

Hamil smiles, and gives you a small bow.

"What's the plan?" Ila asks. "And...ah...I supposed we need some introductions."

You sigh. <Let's go in the fortress. I don't want to repeat myself five times.>

You gather your friends into a room in the fortress.

You tell them the situation with the Kanian armies and the demon lords, as well as Duke Vellik's current position fighting a guerrilla war as they attempt to consolidate Kelvere.

You inform them about the staff of winds, your current goal, stating that such a powerful artifact would be useful in the right hands. Everyone seems suspicious that the local angel activity may be due to that same reason. But how they found out about it, you don't know - so maybe there's something else going on.

Privately, you inform Auriel of the status of Flint's parasite, and Fang's plans for the staff of winds. You also let Auriel know about Fang's possible eagerness to participate in a meeting of powers at Arland when you go to cure Flint. She seems cautiously optimistic, but is suspicious that Fang will try to turn the situation to his advantage. She's probably right.

Ila seems ambivalent about the servant process. You agree with her to wait a bit longer.

Auriel and Ila happily reveal that your human contact in the forest, the enigmatic Janus Miller, has been able to supply you with the raw material to create basic mana pool shielding for Haven. It wouldn't be able to do much other than keep the pool stable so that it doesn't harm the angels (but still allowing the shadow mages to be empowered), but you suppoed that's better than nothing. They could have it set up in a few days.

Relaxations with Janus and his bandits and refugees are positive; you've established a sort of route through the woods to his camp. The angels and shadow mages provide them magical services, and they provide goods that fell off the back of a wagon.

Things with the elves and werewolves are a bit stiff, but warming quickly now that you have a common foe. The werewolves take a more aggressive stance, but realize that they're outmatched alone, and seek your aid. The elvish faction of Forest Den wants to gather more information before moving.

>con't
>>
The orcs are stubbornly silent, and refused to talk with Auriel's messengers despite the obvious threat. They're still seething over your perceived insult.

Meanwhile, Obis and Freja are doing fine back in Maven Lake. Auriel and Vidar Blackwater have exchanged messages, and Felnoir seems receptive to joining forces to defend against the demonic threat. Blackwater has promised to send supplies via the lake, given time.

-------
-------

"So...you're going to find this staff?" Auriel asks.

Flint nods. "That's right. It's more than just that, though. This is about my family, the Flints, the Goddavis. Our true history, our heritage. This is something I can't ignore."

"Right. I'm going with you."

Flint waves his hands. "What? You're needed here. Besides, it's too - "

Auriel jabs a hand over the table, grabs Flint by his shirt collar, and pulls him roughly half over the wood with surprising strength. "You weren't going to end that sentence with the word 'dangerous', were you?"

Flint shakes his head.

"Good. I'm coming with you, because I'll be damned if I'll go through..." She stops herself, swallows, and clears her throat. Tyrael gives you a look. For a brief moment, you share an odd bond with the angel - the exasperation of watching close friends work through their emotional hoops.

Then again, you're one to talk, considering the young woman sitting just next to you. Still.

"I will go as well," Ila says.

You raise your hands. <...are you sure?>

Ila nods firmly. "We'll make the perfect team. Auriel, Sir Flint, myself, Adavan, you, and, Abigail, I suppose?" Abigail nods. "Two spirit, two light, two shadow. Well balanced. Small, capable of moving quickly. We're strong, too."

Tyrael nods. "I'm no pushover. I'll be enough to hold the fort."

>alright, that sounds good. Let's go in the morning. (there will be time to servant Abigail)

Leave Tyrael and Hamil in charge, naturally. I think we should set Obis and Freja to the task of tightening security with our allies - find out what we can contribute to hiding them, and what they can contribute to hiding us, and trade resources/services.
And we six merrily go a'questing.
>>
We should talk with Auriel about how the angel patrols operate. What's the usual command structure? How could they react to losing a patrol or few? Who could be in command? (Asking of the order of the Highest with her gone and what will be the political situation in Ring City). Talk with her about our close encounter with Lucifer.
>>
Alright. I'm going to write the servant scene with Abigail, and then we'll leave this session ready with our party of 6.

You all agree to the plan. Hamil and Tyrael will take charge while you're away.

The day goes on. You assist installing a few slabs of stone that would have taken the angels a lot of effort, and then you locate Abigail, who has been sticking close to Flint and Adavan.

<Abby.>

She brightens when you walk over. "Hey Shadow."

<If you're still willing...I'd like to give you some of my power.>

Abigail nods. "Of course. What do we have to do?"

<I'm going to fly you to a shadow mana pool I know of. It can be accomplished there.>

"Alright. Are you sure that's safe?"

<Yes. I won't go full speed until we're well clear of the forest.>

"If you're sure."

You inform the relevant persons of your brief trip. Ila in particular seems curious about your close relationship with Abigail, but she doesn't pry.

------------
>you get a freebie this time, I'm a bit too tired for the chance of a ridiculous random encounter
------------

You make it to Tarun Gakth without incident. You use a familiar route, sneaking through the orc city of Refuge without trouble, and you find yourself back in the dark depths of the temple.

Abigail peers at the shadow pool. "It's dark."

<I suppose it is.>

"Yeah...but it feels dark. Like there's less light."

<...is that a good thing?>

Even in the near-blackness, you can see the glint of her teeth as she flashes you a grin. "Yeah, it is. It's...like a blanket, wrapped up tight around you at night."

<I see. Well...>

>con't
>>
>>26555065
like?
>>
You take Abigail's hand and lead her near the pool. You dip an arm in the blackness.

The rest happens almost by instinct. A part of your power harnessed from the world, converted to your own, pours into her. The edge of her soul is stained black, turned into a shell of darkness that shields her. An aura of shadow grows over her.

Wings of black feathers blossom from her back. The transfer of power fades, and you let her go. She experiments with her new limbs, flapping one, than the other. She pets the feathers. "Heh...weird." She folds her arms behind her back and smiles. "...I dreamed of this, sometimes." She sits on the dark stone. "Thanks, Shadow. For everything."

<You are welcome. I am glad my power can protect you.>

"Me too. So...are we going home?"

<...I found a part of myself in this place,> you say. <I wanted to focus and repair it here. I felt that being here might aid me, somewhat. But it'll take a few hours, at least.>

She nods. "That's ok. I'll channel magic."

<Don't be too...obtrusive,> you caution. <There are things in the deep that are best left undisturbed.>

"Don't have to tell me twice."

You fall into the darkness of your meditation.

The shards of Isolation begin to coalesce. It feels...rapid. Simple. They're attracted together, here where the darkness is strong.

But you feel something different, this time - an inkling of potential. A bright flame resides within you - an offering.

What do you do?

Isolation really feels like the one where this is appropriate.

It joined us when we basically overcame it's nature with our connections and emotions, It's the one that really should resonate with humanity.

That and isolation is really the only one of the shards we have (barring temerity) that is truly negative in connotation. Silence and Hunger are fine, still part of what we are.

But we are anything but isolated.

I don't care about the roll, it was unavoidable and I don't hate the decision just because of that.
But there's still a risk in that using humanity on isobro might change it in a way that we don't want it to.
>>
You've embraced your humanity. You're more than Erebus was. You don't need to be bound by his powers, his rules, his mission.

You reach for the flame.

It leaps up faster than you expected. Rather than merge, the black fire clashes with the force drawing the scattered bits of Isolation together. They're forced apart, and your efforts are for naught.

When you wake, the air is still. The space is dark. You know it's been some time, though you couldn't say how long.

The only sound is a gently breathing.

Abigail is curled up next to you. Her wings are folded back behind her. Her arms and head rest in your lap.

You don't move. You don't wish to wake her. A certain tension in her face is gone. A pain she's holding isn't there any more.

"...shadow? Are you awake yet?"

You start. <...I just woke. I thought you were asleep.>

"I just..." She yawns, sits up, stretches. "Same here."

<Abby...what's on your mind?>

"...not much, I guess."

You don't let her get away with that. And this close, she can't evade, anyway. You can see it written in her features. <Something is bothering you. Something deep. What is it?>

Abigail slowly folds her legs inward. "...you'll think I'm being stupid."

<No, I won't.>

Your tone makes her look up at you. "...I...what if...this is just an illusion?"

<...what do you mean?>

"I could change things," she said. "What if I made this up? What if I walked through a door...and this is just anther trick? I'm still inside. This is just another test. Another way to hold onto me."

<It isn't.>

"Can you prove it?" Abigail says. Her voice cracks like a dry walnut. "Can you really prove it? You can't. There's no way. I could be making this all up."

>con't

>>
<...I fear the same thing, Abby,> you say. <Sometimes I wonder...that I'll open a door, and I'll be back there. As John. A farmer, stuck in unreality - with an Abigail that isn't real. A fake one I made up to keep myself company.>

"...is that really so bad?" she whispers. "Maybe that one is better than me."

<That's impossible.>

"...it is?"

<I could never bring your forth with all your...self. Your depth. Your personality. Your warmth. I couldn't make it. That thing back in my vision was a doll. You are real.>

"How do you...deal with it?" she asks. "What if...what if this is just another one of your illusions. I feel real. I tell you I'm real. But what if it's just a trap to keep you stuck? What if you're a trap to keep me stuck?

Archonium arc was my favorite arc.

It was also just stressful and tiring from the constant wave of important, character-defining decisions. The length didn't help either.
>>
<Let me answer you with another question. How do you know that the first world was real, and the Archonium was an illusion? What if the Archonium is actually reality, and all this is just a dream?

But iIf this is an illusion,> you continue, <then it's a remarkably accurate reproduction of the world as we left it. Those illusions weren't there to give us a world to change, a path to walk. They were like spiderwebs. Honeypots that lured and trapped. I am not stuck here with you. I'm walking forward with you.

<If this was an illusion, Flint would be cured. The world would be at peace. Light and shadow would get along. Chaos and Order would not be at odds. The elementomachy would never have happened. I...wouldn't have to grant you power. You'd be able to live a normal life. You wouldn't have ever gone into the Archonium.>

"But - "

<It's done, Abigail,> you say. <Is there something after, if we die? Does life have any meaning? Is this reality, or just a projection onto the senses?> You take Abigail and bring her close. <You are real. I am real. That's all I can hope for. And that's enough. That's all I need.>

You sit together in a dark silence broken only by the sound of her tears.

>>
Well, I guess we can hit it from internal consistency. As time goes on, an artificial reality would accumulate "holes" in it.

Maybe an argument could be made that everyone is self-aware, but how observable that would be to the "dreamer" is debatable.

Individuals in reality are capable of free choice, if they were figments they would more closely follow the will of the Dreamer.

That's all I got, and that not expressed in a way that easily translate into Shadow-Abby conversation. But meh.

>>26556022

There were absolutely pacing problems with the Archonium Arc. It dragged on longer than I intended; I was hoping three, four threads.

I should have cut some of it out. The real problem is that this is all a first draft. Pacing is something you control when you edit, not when you write. It's very difficult to get a feel for pacing when you're in the middle of it.

All in all I think it went pretty well, though. Everything important was delivered. The points about the character were made. Shadow has depth and direction. The relationship with Abigail has unrolled pretty smoothly considering how...unique, it is.

Well, visiting the Elf Queen (who lives on an Island) is coming up, and I'm pretty sure that Atlantis is a plot point. So this could come in real handy.

>Frostbite
I've played too many arcane spellcasters to turn down Grease. Do want.

>Water Resistance

>>
>>26555949
>Brief meta, I have to go to sleep.

Anyway.

I think we should spend some of our ginormous amounts of Xp on the Earth Tree.

Specifically, creep up the Automaton tree.

Golem armies, shadow turrets, tiny power cores which will undoubtedly grow bigger the deeper in the tree we go?

We have within our grasp Dwarven magi-tech the likes that haven't been seen since the height of their civilization and the City 001 battles - We should use it.
Also, Machina Loqui, an ability hinted at in the pastebin literally means Machine Talk.

We get that, we can use diplomacy on City 001 and City 002.

Earth tree is the key to inflicting robots on our enemies, gaining robot allies, fixing our airship, and setting up permanent shadow turret defenses around Haven.

And getting it now, BEFORE the war starts, lets us build up for it.

If abigail ever wants a seat on the council, this kind of forgotten magic(via chosen and tree gift) means there's no way in hell they can refuse her a seat because she's the only surviving human who would know these spells and secrets.

So! Remember.
Water tree is good, and project shiva has its fanboys, but the earth tree is gonna help win the war.
>>
>>26556181
>Michael was bullshitting to try and get in Auriel's pants, it wasn't going to happen

Sadface. I guess the only way Auriel is getting wings back is if she accepts shadowy wings.

Would you be willing to talk about the scene where Tyrael found us, Auriel, and Flint in the engine room? We were saved from disaster by a crit, and at the time you sounded like whatever you had planned would be really heartbreaking without it. Which of us would have died?
>>
>>26556181
Remembering how Michael ended up always makes me feel slightly better SM.
We get to the airship and Aurial is all like
"Shadow we can bring him to Court!"
And we're all like
<I ated him and freed the shadow mages, step up your game Auriel or leave Flint with me.>

I wish we could do more cool stuff like that again.

>>
>>26556241

>>
>>26556216

everything in this quest takes longer than I expect

It's a nature of quests, but it's also the mechanics I chose that are to blame. Shadow Quest is effective, but bulky - very bulky. Edgy Quest will have a similar style, but be very trimmed down and less crunchy. That will work better for a more casual parody quest anyway.

The light years-distant scholomance quest...I dunno. I've had some ideas for the mechanics, but I'm not even going to bother writing anything for it until edgyquest is underway, and that might not be until the end of the year at this rate.

>>26556181
>water tree has widespread support, will be involved in voting tomorrow

I would very, very, very much like if if you could do Incremental XP Spending.

Instead of having one giant vote for tons of shit at once, do 1-3 waves of it so we can creep up a tree and see if its worth pursuing.

To use an example, spending 3xp on Robust Immunity to see the link to the other tree - which lets us see if dumping a bunch of xp on Spirit Lash/Spirit Siphon is Worth It(tm), before dumping a bunch of giant purchases in other trees.

Anyway, I am VERY firmly in the Make Dynamos and Fix Our Airship camp, and it looks like the earth tree lets us make power cores, so please bring that up in the votes.

Let me clarify. We don't need to be incremental about the Water Tree since we already know the whole thing. We need to finish it.

Flint would have saved you. Depending on the roll, he might have died.

If course I'm going to finish it. Various endings are already on paper. You think I'd do all this shit without ANY idea of where it's going? Fuck, we'd be here forever.

was a tad rushed... but good.

You yourself said we can't get Mighty Regen right off the bat, given that we need to fill out both the utility/poision tree and water, due to the linked skills dual nature.

It would probably work out better if we sunk good chunks into water and a couple other things.

For water, Frostbite, Great Heal, and Possibly Water Regen.
Shadow Tree's Void ring seemed heavily wanted, and branches off.

Ill post all my thoughts next thread, this one's over and I'm too tired to debate EXP.

>>26556333
>Let me clarify. We don't need to be incremental about the Water Tree since we already know the whole thing. We need to finish it.

The reason to be incrimental is with the OTHER trees,

Basically going 'oh shucks damn we blew 50 Xp completing the Water Tree, and the Dynamo ability is RIGHT THERE and now we can't get it because we did all XP spending at once.

Seriously, 50 xp.
Water recovery 12, frostbite 8, great heal 9. 2 and 6 for resistances, 12 for dark blizzard is 49.

We have 78 left after Servant+Tree.

All i'm saying is we may want to poke around the other trees a bit before COMMITTING to the water tree entirely.

>You yourself said we can't get Mighty Regen right off the bat

Actually, I don't get all the want for Mighty Regen.

Strictly speaking, Earth's Gift is better.

Steady regen. No hp cap. 4xp vs 15. No tree completion required. Stacks with regen we already have - can be used to bring us up to max hp once Fast Regeneration caps out. Earth magic so works in any lighting condition.

>>
>>26556464
Also, it can be used on Other People!

In fact, now that we have Tao, we can do things like Earth's Gift ourself THEN berserk and while our defenses do get lowered, we just heal it up while face stomping.
>>
>>26556464
Darkest spot on the tree.
Mighty regen leads there, after Hydra and Pure Darkness.
So... yeah.
Pro-Hydra.
>>
>>26556464
>Strictly speaking, Earth's Gift is better.
Earth's Gift costs 6 mana.
Still good, but it tempers my interest.
>>
>>26556464
If we were going to waste a turn on a mana-using ability to heal, using a water healing ability is better.

It's already been said that water and light are the two strongest healer elements.
>>
>>26556400
what do you think on the massively bloated xp discussions? a necessary evil, the bane of your existence, or the things which keep you awake at 3 in the morning whilst cackling with unholy joy?
>>
>>26556479

I'm not convinced Hydra is worth it.

I mean, we never use Shiva in combat situations as it is, and hydra has some severe limitations to it.

It only works in the dark, and it doesn't work against magic. Its literally only against knives and swords, not even clubs or maces.

I'm just not convinced its worth the XP cost, or the opportunity cost.
>>
SM, you need to update that character sheet. Abigail is still 9 in our party member list, getting her through school is still one of our goals, and there are some skills missing we've had for a while (replicate, shadow mask, wreath of darkness to name a few).
>>
>>26556491
Going for hydra and pure darkness makes sense as its a natural extension of our build.

I personally want

Fast Blink
Earth's Gift
Robust Immunity

>>26556521
wut? Shiva is a passive boost. We use it EVERY time we fight physically.
>>
>>26556521
>we never use Shiva in combat situations as it is
Uhh.

Any time it's mentioned that we use multiple/many limbs for something, that's shiva.
>>
>>26556521
We use shiva all the time. It's a passive skill that lets us grow extra limbs and overwhelm/take on multiple opponents.
>>
>>26556502
>Earth's Gift costs 6 mana.
>Still good, but it tempers my interest.

We have mana regen now, though.
If we regen mana per turn, and it lasts 5 turns, then its mana cost is really 1-3(since it CAN last shorter)

That makes it WAY better and more sustainable.
>>
>>26556521
Hydra builds into the final part of the tree, and where it crosses over with Pure Darkness, i assume is an upgrade that increases it's flexablity.
>>
>>26556530
>wut? Shiva is a passive boost. We use it EVERY time we fight physically.

Its underlined on the tree. I thought so to, but its listed as Active Use
>>
>>26556521
We ALWAYS use shiva when we have to swing at more than one or two things simultaneously. It's a passive ability.
>>
>>26556552
When the fuck did SM do that...

It used to be passive. Guess he did it for lulz since people kept always saying "USE SHIVA!!!" when they didn't need to say it.
>>
>>26556540
Mighty regen works passively, permanently. and doesn't cost mana. You are overselling the skill. Earth's Gift would be better in tandem with a more powerful passive regen.
>>
>>26556552
It's actively used, yes, but that's because it's not an always-on ability because we're not always fighting.
It's like a free active ability with zero cooldown.
Which means it should probably just be labeled passive to avoid confusion.
>>
>>26556552
I think that's an error, Bring it up with SM next thread - I believe I recall him telling us that it's passive.
>>
We /could/ spend 38 on completing the Chosen tree.
>>
>>26556591
I like your style but even I'd rather spend elsewhere at this moment.
>>
>>26556591

>>
>>26556591

Buuuut I want buffs for our friendventure with our 5 companions that would make us more personally reliable.
>>
>>26556450

I put some effort in. I had hoped for at least a small but somewhat loyal following.

It is much more popular than I imagined it would be. If there's one thing I'm most proud of, it's that people have consistently said they like my prose. The story and the characters can change, but style and composition is a skill that can be applied no matter what.

>>26556518

All of those, exactly as you wrote them.

>>26556526

I know. I'm going to create a servant section.

Passive skills aren't on the character sheet, only active ones. Shadow Mask and Wreath are both passive; replicate has just blended in on and off with the story that it's hardly a skill anymore.
