Now with a quest, sort of.

Eclipse Phase in the Mass Effect universe thread begin.

If anyone wants to continue the quest that, to my immense surprise, seemed to be getting popular last night, please check in so I know enough players are here to start.

Last time we selected our gear and just hit dirt on Eden Prime, in a moment I will post our morph and weapons loadout.

That time again
>>
>>26584709

You are currently sleeved into a flexbot synthmorph, a robot body composed of several sub modules, each capable of separating from the main body and acting independently.

Your modules are as follows.

Apiary: A mini swarmanoid, a separate morph composed of thousands of mechanical insects.

Fighter: General combat module.

Longbow: Weapons platform module.

Wizard: Infosec module, specialized for hacking.
>>
>>26584826

You currently possess the following weapons.

Railgun sniper rifle and plasma gun mounted in the Longbow module's articulated weapon mounts.

Particle beam bolter and railgun LMG mounted on the fighter's static weapon mounts.
>>
>>26584709

Also, before we begin, I have a little message to send.

I have found that one of the people involved in making the original EPME threads, of which this is a revival, was very upset by how this has been going, talking about it in a quest general thread.

His main complaint seemed to be that we were ignoring the crunch he had worked on in the old threads. Believe me, I can understand the feeling, if I worked so hard on something like that and someone seemed to ignore it then I would be mad as well.

I want to say, that I would be glad to use more intensive crunch, if this gets popular enough to justify the extra work that would entail on my part. If that happens, I will of course use the crunch from the old threads for the citadel races.

If you are reading this, then know that I have taken your work into consideration, and would greatly appreciate any help you have to offer.

I am sorry for any hard feelings.
>>
>>26584904

Bumping so people can see it's back.

I don't have anything else to say, unless anybody has questions.
>>
>>26584964
What's Anderson's Muse's name?
>>
>>26584990

Hrm... I had not thought of that.

Let me consider it.
>>
>>26584964
Alright. If you're talking about the same guy I'm thinking about his complains seem a little strange since you have based your work heavily of his and didn't ignore it at all.
But whatever, let's just get started.
I actually took the time to read through the core rules, character creation and gear sections so I'm informed much better now.
>>
>>26585038

Right, I think we have two people here.

If you guys are ready I can get this moving.
>>
>>26585038
Also what augumentations/enhancements do we have on our flexbot?
>>
>>26585068

Nothing apart from the standard kit on the bot.
>>
>>26585062
Sure.
I've still not had time to touch the EP PDFs in any way though.
>>
>>26585114
Right, we didn't specify what we wanted last thread.
Oh well, we'll be fine. Right, right?
I mean it's only Geth...
>>
>>26585151

True, but it takes a little more time than that to slap upgrades onto a morph. So you can't just say I want ALL the upgrades for every morph before every mission.

You should try to cultivate your morphs.

Actually, I am going to implement a system wherein you only have limited morphs.

To start with, you have your Turian morph, Flexbot, and a Fury morph.

Others will be made available to you for purchase to keep you limited in morph choice.
>>
>>26585229

You look around the network of hills and valleys you have landed in, the audio receptors on your morph picking up the sounds of distant gunfire rolling over the grassy hills. Off in the distance you see a city, the great black ship hovering over it, pillars of smoke rising into the air. You send a quick mental comm to your squad, as well as a hand signal for Nihlus’ benefit to fall in as you move forwards. You are rounding a corner when you detect movement. Deploying your weapons, you whip around to lock onto… what seems to be an organic hot air balloon.

“Gasbags sir.” Jenkins says, “They’re harmless. Like floating sheep really.”

You remain silent. It would not do for the Commander to seem flustered over something as trivial as this.

Apart from the floaters, your team is alone in the clearing, and the beacon site lies a little ways ahead of you.

Actions?
>>
>>26585237
Proceed towards the beacon, guns up and ready to rock n roll if we need to
And its a long shot but check the local mesh, we might be able to get an idea of what the hell is happening
>>
>>26585237
We use whatever sensors we have to get a closer reading on the ship, and scan the nearby area for threats or anomalous things. Whatever we find, we send to the squad over the tacnet.
>>
>>26585229
Yeah, that seems way more balanced after reading through all the stuff. I mean this can get pretty ridiculous pretty fast.
(Can we assume we have Heavy Combat Armor with Fireproofing though? iirc the weapons in Mass Effect had some nasty punch to them.)
>>
>>26585237
This >>26585284
Also pop one of them.
We all did it, admit it.
>>
>>26585286

Your morph has the heavy combat armor 20/20 upgrade courtesy of the Longbow module.

Be aware of the abilities of your morph, especially its modularity. You could IE have your longbow module detatch and hover over the battlefield like a UCAV sniper platform whilst you battle on the ground, though that would decrease your armor and health.

Don't forget about your swarmanoid either.
>>
>>26585339

You ping the mesh, trying to get some idea of what is happening.

[This is Commander Shepard to any Alliance forces in the vicinity of the beacon site, report status and give me a sitrep.]

You wait for a few seconds, and to your surprise someone pings you back.

[This is gunnery chief Ashley Williams with the 212th Jovian heavy infantry. My unit’s decimated is the damn sitrep. Sir.]

[I just got here chief, I need intel. What faction have you engaged? Who are we fighting?]

[I’m pretty sure these are Geth sir, they fit the profile we got from the citadel.]

/Jennifer, get me everything you have on the Geth, or can find quickly./ You think to your muse.

[Thank’s for the intel chief, try to hang on, my unit is moving in your direction.] You confirm her position on the tacmap, not a quarter mile further through the valley than your current position.

[I’m up to my eyes in flashlight heads here! Speed would be appreciated!]

She kills the link after that, seeming to have more important things to focus on.

Jennifer gives you everything she has on the Geth. They are accurate shooters, tend to work in coordinated groups, have strong shields but limited health, and can recover from hacking after a few seconds.

Actions?
>>
>>26585518

Also, the key for dialogue.

"Spoken dialogue."

[Mind to mind communication.]

/Talking to your muse./
>>
>>26585518

>>26585284, but while moving towards Williams' position as quickly as possible, and keeping an eye out for flashlight heads.
>>
>>26585569

You have no sensors capable of scanning the ship from this range.
>>
>>26585579
Then just the surroundings.
>>
>>26585588

Do you wish to deploy your swarmanoid or detach a flight-capable module to act as eyes and ears?
>>
>>26585518
Alright, move afap but don't break formation (especially try to not leave Nihlus behind) Use cover to advance, keep the sensors active.
(How close are you to the game? Are there containers with stuff laying around that we can hack?)

Also what loadout do our other squad members have?

>>26585604
Yes, send it 100 meters ahead and 30 meters above ground, direct video feed.

>captcha william wartici
Interesting.
>>
>>26585626

Sorry, no random crates to hack every fifteen feet.

Kaiden has a medium pistol, Jenkins has an assault rifle, Nihlus has a shotgun and an assault rifle.
>>
>>26585665

Anything from anyone else?
>>
>>26585665
Alright, I think we should go in front since we have the heaviest armor. Unless someone else has dedicated reconnaissance equipment that they wish to use ahead of the group
>>
>>26585681

Right. Proceeding.
>>
>>26585665
>Sorry, no random crates to hack every fifteen feet.

Damn it, now how will be able can't satisfy our latent kleptomania?
>>
>>26585691
AFAIK, our swarmanoid is the reconnaissance.
>>
>>26585734
I butchered that sentence pretty hard.
That's what happens when you rewrite your shit from a phone.
>>
>>26585722

You activate your Apiary module, over one thousand tiny mechanical insects issuing forth from their armored storage compartment. You do a brief check in with the fork controlling the swarmanoid.

Shepard Prime [You good?]

Shepard Beta [Damn good.]

Shepard Prime [Glad to hear it, recon ahead, 100 meters to our front, about 30 meters up, wide recon dispersal pattern.]

Shepard Beta [Right, on point.]

The cloud of insects spreads out over several meters and vectors out and up, racing off ahead of you to recon the valleys ahead.

“The rest of you fall in behind me, I have the heaviest armor here, possibly with the exception of Nihlus, so I have point.”

“And the cloud of insects?” Nihlus asks.

“That’s our forward recon.” You confirm.

You move forwards, watching the hills for any sign of attack, checking in constantly with your beta fork in the swarmanoid. After a minute or so he pings you with intel.

[You have incoming, Geth combat drones, count three buzzers flying in formation coming in from your one o’clock.]

[Acknowledged, thanks for the heads up.] You reply.

You have about five seconds before they hit your position, actions?
>>
>>26585865
Seek cover, ready our railgun LMG.
Are the drones on our tacmap yet?
>>
>>26585865
Tell everyone to get in cover and ready weapons. Get Kaidan ready with some sort of biotic power, whatever he has. Fire at them when we can get a lock with our lighter weapons, no use wasting ammo.
>>
>>26585865
Relay info to squad, order cover and weapons ready, prep for hacking ourselves. There's a chance we could get tacdata from them, even if insignificant.
And experience from Geth datanets.
>>
>>26585907
I think he handles squad actions if we don't explicitly state something. At the moment we probably only have to command ourselves.

Think of it like in the games, you could set your squad to auto and they'd do well but if you want to use specific combos you have to command them.
>>
>>26585865

“Squad, incoming Geth attack drones, take cover and hit them as they come over the hill!”

You find a convenient rock to crouch behind, watching your AR datafeeds from your fork. He paints three targeting reticules behind a nearby hill through your tactical network. A few moments later the three saucer like drones pop over the hill and see your squad behind cover.

Roll out of 100, low is good, best of three. For now.

Also, state the weapon you are using, you can only use two yourself, though you cannot aim if you fire both.

You can tell a beta fork to fire your other weapons as needed, but he is not as good a shot as you.
>>
Rolled 26

>>26586005
I think we should use the LMG, it's the only automatic thing we have and those shitters are hard to hit.
>>
Rolled 94

Fire railgun LMG at one, get Beta forks to fire the bolter and plasma.
>>

>>

Let's go with the LMG
>>
Rolled 28

>>26586005
A quick burst from the LMG, aim for the two closest together
>>
>>26586005

You sight up along the targeting data being related to you by your fork, anticipating where the lead drone will dive to make its attack run. With a thought you activate your LMG, sending a brace of fire ripping through the drone, flatlining its thin shielding and tearing it apart with one burst.

Thankfully, your squad mates are equally adept at this task, Nihlus and Jenkins taking down one between them with focused fire, and Kaiden sending some kind of biotic orb attack to send the remaining drone crashing to the ground, shooting sparks.

It seems you have seen off the first wave.

“Just like skeet shooting!” Jenkins says.

“I’m sure there will be bigger ones later.” Kaiden says, trying to rein him in a bit.

“There always are.” Says Nihlus, checking over his rifle.

The drones barely got a shot off, no damage to your team thus far.

>>26586206

“Come on, we have to get to William’s position, I’d rather not have to wait to check her stack to get some firsthand accounts of what’s been going on here.”

You check the load on your LMG and open a comm to the Normandy.

[Captain Anderson, this is Shepard. Be advised that we have engaged Geth units on the planet, I repeat Geth are attacking the colony. No further information available at this time.]

[Geth? They haven’t left the Perseus Veil for two centuries, they must be here for the beacon.]

[That thing must be pretty valuable to justify them breaking two centuries of tradition.] You say as you kill the comlink.

You send your swarmanoid further ahead again, to monitor the situation.

[Williams, we are almost there!] You call ahead.

She doesn’t bother responding, just sending a standard ping. You round the corner a moment later to see the battle field laid out before you. Williams is pinned down behind a rock, firing her rifle back at some Geth who are advancing on her position. She seems to have taken a hit or two, from this distance at least. Your swarmanoid relays some tactical data to you, calling up the tacnet to give you a birds eye view of the battlefield, giving you the exact positions of every Geth down there.

Some are rushing Williams, some others sitting back and keeping her suppressed with rifle fire.

State action and roll as needed.

Shepard Alpha [Gamma, spin off and take the figher module. I want you up in the air and raining some fire down on these Geth, I’ll handle long range support.

Shepard Gamma [On it, I’ll keep their heads down.]

You crouch behind a rock for the long seconds it takes for your fighter module to disengage, the couplings holding the flexbot together disengaging one by one. Finally the fighter module jumps free from your main body and ignites its thrusters, the dog sized morph hovering high into the air and arming weapons.

Unfortunately, whilst you were vulnerable, you were unable to fire upon the charging Geth units. Some of them have broken off and are engaging you now. You are vaguely aware of a line of fire being stitched across your torso, leaving deep gashes in your heavy armor. You are unaware of any internal damage, but with synthmorph senses it’s hard to tell.

The rest of your team is busy holding the other Geth off of Williams, though Kaiden does send one of the Geth who shot you flying.

Roll to engage.

Roll three times, then three more, once for Alpha, and once for Gamma Shepard. Gamma is firing at -20 to hit.

You swing up your plasma gun and obliterate one of the Geth who maimed your morph, its shields evaporating and body melting under the blast of star stuff. The hovering fighter module opens up with its machinegun and PBB, hypersonic slugs chewing through Geth and accelerated streams of energized particles blasting them apart with casual ease.

“Take out the ones in the field, I’ll handle the ones on the ridge.” You order, sighting in with your rifle.

Your squad acknowledges and moves down into the ravine ahead of you, taking the Geth one by one. You start firing on the Geth pinning down Williams, their slender heads exploding one by one under the thunderous shots of your sniper. The fighter module swoops low and fires a long burst from its machinegun, tearing apart another two.

One Geth seems to evade the attacks, then you see the swarm of tiny black insects running through its internals, severing wires and connections until it collapses to the ground. The fight is swift and brutal, but you take down all the Geth here, leaving only your squad and Chief Williams still standing after a few moments.

She looks a little injured, but her medigel seems to have contained the worst of it.

You link up with the fighter module. [Nice work Gamma, come on back to the barn.]

Shepard Gamma [What, you tired of me hogging all the glory? I mean did you see what that bolter did to that one trooper?]

Shepard Alpha [Of course, but I don’t think the bolter really compares to the plasma rifle in terms of sheer destruction.]

Shepard Gamma [Ha, enjoy your ten shot magazine, I’ve got five times that much over here.]

Shepard Alpha [Alright, alright, enough of this we’ve got a job to do.]

Gamma doesn’t say anything else, but you detect the faintest hint of amusement coming through the link as the fighter module links back up with your main body, various connections snapping together as it reintegrates into your form.

You turn a camera towards Williams, who is getting back to her feet. You run a quick scan of her morph, determining it to be a Ranger combat morph. Seen by many as the Jovian equivalent of the Fury, the Ranger is tough and rugged, but lacks the instinctual aggression of the Fury morph, favoring a more calm tactical mind.

She checks herself for wounds and stands at attention before Alenko.

“Sir, I’m glad you made it in time.”

“You should talk to the Commander then.” Alenko says, pointing towards you.

You stand up, the last of the fighter module clamping into your form.

“Good to see you’re in once piece chief, we came as soon as we could.”
>>
>>26587288

Forgot, to be continued, unless you have input.
>>
>>26587293
Nope. Please continue. I want to see Williams reaction to THE Commander Shepard. (If we reaveal that at all.)
>>
>>26587293

“You’re the leader of this team?” She says, looking skeptical.

“Yes I am.” You reply, wondering where this is going.

Williams looks between you, Jenkins and Nihlus. “I thought the Geth were strange. If that an honest to God Turian? On Eden Prime?”

Alenko frowns. “Nihlus is a council Specter, following Commander Shepard on this mission.”

Ashley blinks. “Wait, you’re Commander Shepard? The Commander Shepard?”

You tip your metal cranium. “The one and only.”

“Forget I said anything sir. Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams, 212th Jovian heavy infantry, reporting for duty sir!”

“Relax Chief.” You say, waving a hand as if to blow the formalities away like smoke.

“Just give me a report as we move, we have to secure that beacon.”

“Right, sir.”
>>
>>26587420

You fall in, sending Nihlus and Jenkins back to cover the rear.

“Fill me in Chief, what are we looking at?”

“Geth sir, and whatever that giant ship is. I’ve never seen anything even remotely like it before. It just came out of the sky, no warning, no pings from the defense grid, it just dropped in. A minute after that the Geth were all over us, most of the 212th got wiped out in the first waves of the attack. We were covering for the civilians so they could get to safety, but there were just too many of them. My squad walked into an ambush, the Geth just popped out of the trees and started shooting.”

“Disposition of enemy forces?”

“Unknown for the most part, though their attacks became heavier the closer we got to the dig site.”

You nod. “Right, we’ve got to get past them and recover that beacon then. These Geth may want the beacon, but so far as I am concerned it is still the property of the Alliance, and I am not about to let some glorified burglars walk off with it.”
The squad proceeds for a little while further, until Shepard Beta reports that he has sighted, something unusual.

You link in and see through the eyes of one of his bugs, it seems that a number of transhuman biomorph corpses have been… impaled on long spikes and raised high into the air.

No Geth forces are evident in the area.

>>
>>26587638

Shepard Alpha [Beta, get a little closer to those spikes, this is certainly not normal behavior, at least I hope it isn’t.]

Shepard Beta [Going in for a closer look.]

Your viewpoint rapidly shifts as Beta’s swarmanoid buzzes down to investigate the spikes. Nothing really seems to happen as he gets closer, though you now have a clear view of what is going on to the biomorphs impaled there. It seems that the bodies have been transformed in some way, the flesh taking on a pallid blue color, and obvious cybernetics seeming to run just below the surface, causing the skin to bulge. They seem utterly lifeless from here, not moving at all.

You relay your findings to the rest of the team, and advance slowly towards the strange spikes. When you cross into the field they suddenly jump into motion, the spikes sliding down to drop the corpses onto the ground. At least, they looked like corpses before they got up and started running at you.

“Oh God,” Ashley breathes, “They’re still alive!”

Of course.
>>
>>26587997

For future reference, you need not state weapon unless you really feel the need to be specific. Shepard will use whatever is most appropriate to the situation.
>>
>>26588148

You bring up your bolter, targeting the first of the, husks, you decide to call them. The shells of former transhumans seem without regard for their own life, even as the first one liquefies under the stream of accelerated particles the rest just keep charging towards you. You rake some fire across a few husks with your machinegun and cut a few more in half.

Kaiden raises his arm dramatically and sends one soaring into the air surrounded by a corona of biotic energy, dropping to the ground with a wet splat several meters away. Williams is pouring fire from her assault rifle, the roaring muzzle flash of a chemical firearm sending a staccato strobe across the field. Judging by the way her targets are being ripped apart she is using antipersonnel ammunition. Nihlus and Jenkins are picking off some stragglers. Occasionally a husk becomes swarmed by a cloud of metallic insects and flails around for a bit before going down.

After a few long moments of fire the hillside before you is covered with bodies, laying limp in pools of blue fluid. You have secured the area, for the moment.

The corpses lie inert down before you, the spikes are also not moving. There are also some sheds off to the right, though you cannot see any activity from you current position.

Actions?

With the TEZ in place, transhumanity would first need to get all friendly with at least one of the big three, my guess being the Salarians as the safest bet compared to the paranoid Turians and the condescending Asari before they could try to get the good will of the general population. If the Salarians could put in a good word, it MIGHT help enough for the transhumans to try to export other things, most likely arts and entertainment before material goods.

This is a interesting take on ME/EP, but somehow it overly Mass Effect-izes Eclipse Phase.

Imho I would have liked the idea of Shepard being just a Firewall meme op to fuck up with everyone's mind, and possibly a take without the Systems alliance, just a very loose UN Security Council member type thing, where nothing beyond "don't actively pursue a war with the Citadel" gets done, and a far, far more factionalized human presence and smugglers ahoy, whit firewall teeming in citadel space to recover anything that would be about to be used as a casus beli.
The System Alliance to being to a giant maskirovka, pulled of sometimes haphazardly but most of the time very well coordinated with heavy Firewall, Ozma and the others help.

Imho, that would be way more in character for EP (trans)humanity. Specters and STG running sigint/elint on the transhuman sphere, and counter ops in citadel for every discernible firewall activity, which would be a 1 in 10, while firewall and G-net doing their merry go round of the citadel with the usual body-jacking and ego-snatching. One selling and one stealing back what should not be sold.

Another thing that could be subverted heavily is the rumor mill in EP, by not having trans humanity give away any critical information beyond the bare minimum, making the Citadel a massive parody of the GM rumour section in the core books, that is played straight.

If anything the games campaign and party would not even be in the form of a ship, but a firewall running op, whit each episode most likely another team and each new alien team mate a potential asset or recruit to be used as a native, by giving them the "If you go down we are next, after all." Thus explaining away different party members and Shepard personality.

Most likely the Normandy itself a lie, using instead ego casting as much as possible, and having various pre-positioned Firewall ghost stealth ships taking the name when it is convenient.

Basically Acting as EPhumanity as it should

Don't get me wrong but I think this would be much better as a writefaggotry than a quest. You're better at writing stories than hosting a game
I'm not overly interested in seeing Shepard's alternative story but series of small ones about different topics and events. Or just writefagging the whole Shepard's trans story. If you give free reign to the players they'll just try to waifu and save everyone like they always do and it becomes boring fast. Also, restricting Shepard just to make the quest "gamey" seems weird. With his background, he should be a multi-trillionaire superman with massive clout. Why would we have restricted amount of morphs and need to buy new ones as story progresses in the typical rpg fashion? Why should the geth, which were damn cannon fodder in ME series, pose any kind of threat to him that we need to make dice rolls?

I remember when this was a thing few years ago. It was pretty damn great with different people writing interesting things for a while before /tg/ couldn't contain it's autism and sperged all over the place. They were against the HFY! vibes that this crossover gave off.
While they are right to certain extent, it wasn't that transhumanity was OP, it was that the rest of the universe were bunch of hillbillies stuck in Dark Ages. They banned pretty much everything that could progress the tech further: AI, nanites, cloning, etc, they were iffy about cybernetics. They didn't even know how Citadel worked and what exactly it was. The most recent technological breakthrough was the medi-gel, ffs, and that it only because the humans before the contact weren't forbidden using nanites.

Anyway, I'm sure there are many ways to show how technologically regressed the ME universe is and how inept the Council is.

I hope this time around things will be different, though I did notice some people complaining again about the same shit. I hope it wont affect things as much since Bioware did a great job of raping MEs corpse.
>>
>>26601843
Also, the reason why EP seems to dominate ME when they cross is because EC seems to me much better setting, much more fleshed out and interesting while ME is an incredibly bland, cliched space adventure. The only reason why people liked it because video games have lower standards and the comradeship (and romance) that the allies offered. Take that away and ME is just barebones and unimpressive.
>>
>>26601893
>>26601843
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, an Eclipse Phase/Mass Effect crossover doesn't work if it's from the perspective of transhumanity.

It's like writing a crossover between The Aeneid and The Culture. Yeah, it's just great that the Culture cockslaps Aeneas, brings Queen Dido back to life, and gets the giggles as they build a giant space city out of Rome.

I just don't like how the point of ME/EP seems to be to attain an even greater height of HFY by shitting on a setting which, sure, isn't logical, but it's trying to be a Space Opera, Steel Starships and Iron Men.

If you must point out the idiocy, at least do it from the perspective of one of the victims learning and adapting as a person.

>The zha'til were a synthetic race that existed at the time of the Protheans. They originated when a race known as the zha implanted themselves with symbiotic AI technology to enhance their intelligence in order to survive as their homeworld became inhospitable. When the Reapers arrived, they subjugated the AIs, known as zha'til, who then seized control of the bodies of their masters and altered their genetic material at the deepest level, transforming the zha into synthetic monsters and their offspring into slaves. The zha'til proceeded to multiply into "mechanical swarms" that "blotted out the sky". With no other recourse, the Protheans sent the star of the zha's home system into supernova, destroying the zha'til entirely.

Sound familiar? As per OP, the TITANs were created by the Reapers. How fucked do you think humanity will be when the Reapers arrive?

Woah woah woah...

This thing is still here?

Huh, didn't expect that.
>>
>>26603237

Nice to see this is generating debate. I am open to suggestions, but of course I have the way I want to run this.

However, let me allay some concerns.

Firstly, the Alliance is not nearly as tight and binding as the cannon ME Alliance is, it is much more loose and patchwork. The individual factions within it still have their own distinct ways of life and still bicker with each other, but having a unified military keeps them from waging war. That said, there is still hostility between a lot of their people.

As for transhumanity being OP, I thought I had made this clear. Transhumanity does not have the manpower, mobility, or the industrial base needed to wage war on a galactic scale. In all out war, the citadel races would beat them, though it would be very bloody.
>>
>>26603481
I am here, but working on other things. FYI.
>>
>>26604256
Cool.

Any interesting stories you could write? Nothing in articular but maybe some short stories from the eyes of council races with their encounters of transhumanity.

I still think you should drop the quest thing (even though I love quests) and just write Shepard's story (or others)
>>
>>26605242

Yes, I never really wanted to do a quest. I will probably still do it beause it makes people happy, but I don't want it to become the only focus of these threads. People enjoy the quest, so I do the quest, for them.

I will consider a story, but I am actually writing other things right now, give me a little bit.

Here's an idea. Instead of having a full on quest, perhaps just a semi-interactive story? IE, I write it as a normal story, but take liberal suggestions from the audience? And listen to their input on important conversations and opinions?
>>
>>26605457

So, why biomorphs?

A column by Jayne Kalen.

Now, I think it’s time I finally answered a question that a lot of my readers have been raising. Why biomorphs? Specifically, why does the Alliance military continue to field biomorph soldiers, when they have access to as many synthmorphs as they can possibly build? I mean, on the surface synthmorphs seem better at everything right? Let’s just list some ways they are superior for general combat purposes.
I mean, honestly, just look at some of the battle synths that trigger happy designers are pumping out these days. The Reaper is the oldest and the most famous, and continues to be the trusted standby for heavy assault work, so let’s look at that as a baseline. It has four, yes four, articulated weapon mounts loading any kind of ordinance you care to name. It’s got heavy armor, that’s smart materials as well, so it can reshape and self-heal in the field. Yes it can walk on those four big tentacles it has, but it is also capable of flight using both its thrust vector jets and an ionic drive. I’d like to see some tricked out biomorph keep up with the Reaper in midair!

So then, if we are capable of pumping these out of any decently sized nanofabricator with none too much trouble, why even bother with biomorphs anymore for field work? I mean biomorphs take time and resources to grow, they bleed, they feel pain, they get tired, they need to eat and drink and breathe, so many problems that make the whole matter much more complicated and difficult than it needs to be? So just what is their saving grace? Drugs. Yes, you saw that right.
>>
>>26605457

>People enjoy the quest, so I do the quest, for them.
I see. That's cool though.
I just felt you're better suited to simply write than making a quest but if you personally like doing that, then you should continue.

> but I don't want it to become the only focus of these threads
I feel that that would be kinda hard. By making a quest you will attract the quest crowd and scare away the people who hate them.

>Here's an idea. Instead of having a full on quest, perhaps just a semi-interactive story? IE, I write it as a normal story, but take liberal suggestions from the audience? And listen to their input on important conversations and opinions?

Guess that works. You could go CYOA route and give several paths to choose from without giving free option or such.
>>
>>26605833

I have seen battle synths do some pretty crazy things, but few can keep pace with a properly spec’d out biomorph with just the right cocktail of chemicals in its veins. Adrenaline glands and drug glands can turn a fight around if used right, and a nice dosage of Kick of Phlo can turn a simple biomorph into a much more dangerous adversary. Added to that the kind of heavy armor a lot of the stronger biomorphs can lug around, and there you have a rather surprisingly powerful field asset just itching to go.

Yes, yes, I know that having a bunch of ‘roided up biomorphs tearing across the battlefield does few good things for tactical battle plans, but having those options in place for emergencies can easily turn a losing situation into a sudden reversal. Of course some factions deploy biomorphs as a matter of course, IE the Jovians, who tend to have issues when forced to work alongside synths, let alone sleeve into one themselves. Then there are the biomorphs who, try as they might, the tech gurus still have yet to surpass with synths in my book. Put an optical camouflage cloak on a Ghost morph and give that one a few quiet, discreet weapons and you have something really nasty on your hands, good luck matching that with a clanking groaning synth.

So there you have it, at least as I see it, the main reasons why biomorphs still make up a rather sizable portion of the Alliance military, because sometimes it just really is better to have a heart beating at a thousand miles an hour, rather than an icy cool processor for when it comes to laying on some hurt.

>>
>>26606134

Wow, that was fast.

Just let me grab a snack and I'll start writing something.
>>
>>26605457
As one of the people that originally suggested a quest and consequently played it may I suggest something?

Drop the quest altogether. I'm pretty certain that, with all the thought you already put into this, have the story of Shepard already layed out before you. I don't think you'd let us interfere with it via a quest very much (I wouldn't).
So I would suggest that you just give us bits and pieces of his stories and answer other questions in these threads as usual.

And instead of using Shepards stories for a quest you, or rather we´together with you, could think up a spin-off story much closer to the actual adventures that you play in EP and have a go with that as our quest as something completely separate, if you like of course.
(And I know you have way too much free time on your hands anyways, don't deny it.)
>>
>>26606192

Only a little too much free time...

But yes, I will take this under heavy advisement.
>>
>>26606134
Perhaps some of his daily life then him first reciving his assigment, working on it a bit and after that meeting the Shepard's crew? Might be more intresting if we know the character more before they met.

Oh and it should probably be from Jovick's perspective.

Also, OP, I'm glad you discarded the Xepard idea, I thought it was the worst part of ME/EP crossover discussion from the past.
>>
>>26606246

Yes, I personally disliked it as well.

Pushing Shepard aside in favor of making the story about a Batarian Specter seemed like a poor choice to me.

But keeping said Batarian around as a well meaning antagonist genuinely trying to do his job, and not be pulled into the power wrangling of the higher ups? That has some potential.
>>
>>26606277

Anybody remember the name if Xpeard's ship?
>>
>>26606497

It's the Skyllian. I've got it.
>>
>>26606277

Xepard gripped the rifle in his hands tighter, fighting down the traitorous urge from the pit of his gut to drop the weapon and flee. He had been trained for this damn it, but this seemed to go almost beyond what a man could bear. He leaned out from behind cover, just enough to get a peek at what was going on, catching a momentary glimpse of his attackers before pinging shrapnel from the wall beside him forced him to duck back behind cover.

“Alright, if that’s how you want to play this.” He mumbled to himself, pulling a grenade from his belt. He thumbed the activator and chucked the explosive over his shoulder, waiting for the muffled ‘krump’ before whipping around cover and firing, tearing through the barriers of the last one still standing.

Xepard shook himself and moved up towards the building ahead of him, no doubt more hostiles waiting inside. As he reached the door he stowed his rifle and pulled out the Raider shotgun, arming the close quarters weapon and hitting the door control. The portal swished open and Xepard leaned in, whipping the shotgun around the room to scan for targets. None presented themselves. Xepard cautiously inched forward, scanning for any evidence of movement or habitation. Still nothing. He wondered if perhaps all the enemies had been outside? But he quashed that quickly, thinking like that got you killed. Nothing else for it though, so he continued deeper into the structure.
>>
>>26606797

Right, one last door. One last door. The portal to the final room seemed impossibly large, looming over him like some predatory may about to clamp down on him for good. Taking a deep breath to steady his traitorous nerves, Xepard reached out a hand and pushed the door control. The door swung open, and Xepard just got time to put his foot through the door when the barrel of a pistol came around the corner and pointed right at his face, the finger squeezing the trigger.

Xepard’s eyes flew open, and he lay panting in bed, the covers twisted and contorted from where he had been tossing and turning in his sleep.

“Damn them.” He says as he rises to a sitting posture. “Damn them all.”

Xepard runs a hand over his face, and looks at the clock beside his bed. Nothing else for it, time to face the world. He rose up and shuffled into the bathroom, splashing cold water on his face. He looked up, studying his scarred reflection in the mirror.

“You have something to say?” He asked the mirror image. “Some secret you’d like to share?”

The glass looked back at him in stony silence.

“That’s what I thought.” He says, pulling on his uniform.
>>
>>26606951

A few minutes later, Commander Xepard, officer of the Batarian Hegemony, and council Specter, was fully dressed and feeling marginally more like the Batarian he usually was. He schooled his face into a mask of calm assured command, and stepped through his door out onto his ship. The Skyllian was a fine ship, one of several such craft commissioned after the resurgence of the Batarian people. If they were going to defend their new borders against transhuman encroachment, they needed a fast reaction strike force to get to hot spots quickly. The Skyllian, and ships like her, carried Batarian special forces units across the length and breadth of the TEZ border, constantly on alert for any transhuman incursions. Xepard had made sure to request such a ship as his personal vehicle once he had been made a Specter.

Xepard rode the elevator up to the operations level, taking a quick tour of the CIC to see if anything had developed overnight. It turned out that nothing had, so the Specter had nothing to occupy himself with for the moment. With nothing else to do, Xepard stood up over the holographic galaxy map, reviewing something on a datapad, and trying to look as though he were doing something terribly important. Xepard had learned long ago that seeing their commander working hard on some important project was good for morale, it proved that you weren’t going to just sit in your cabin at the top of the sip and delegate everything downwards. And if you had nothing to do, at least look like you were doing something. Xepard had resolved to go and inspect the engines, when one of his ensigns told him he had a priority transmission being patched through to the communication room.
>>
>>26607213

Xepard nodded, and proceeded down into the room. This space, located at the center of the ship, was crammed with the very best communications and information security technology the Hegemony had to offer, it was here that most of Xepard’s missions began and ended.

“Right, patch it through.” He says to empty air, waiting as the holographic images faded into view.

To his mild surprise, it was the Turian councilor, Sparatus who had called.
>>
>>26607228

“Councilor, to what do I owe the honor.” Xepard says. Outside he is everything the councilor has come to expect from him, calm, resolved, determined. Inside though he is racing, calculating all the variables that have just been introduced into his life. If a councilor is calling, it is hardly for a friendly hello, that means a mission. Council means high importance, that usually means dangerous, and with a lot of complications.

“You owe your Specter badge.” Sparatus says, “I need it, and the man that goes with it, for a rather sensitive operation.”

“Myself and my ship are at your disposal councilor.” Xepard says, his back ramrod straight, hands at parade rest.

“Good, because this mission is going to be of the most sensitive nature.”

Xepard tried to ignore the way the back of his neck started to prickle.

“One of my patrol ships has gone silent along the border with the TEZ.” Sparatus says, cutting straight to the chase.

Xepard’s face never wavered, but an icy pit formed in his stomach.

“Do we know if the transhumans are involved?” he asked.

“Know, no. But the writing is on the wall. They’re involved, somehow. I need you to proceed to the ship’s last known location, and figure out what happened to it. Then you report back with any information you can uncover.”

“Sir!” Xepard responds.

“And Commander. If it is the transhumans.” Sparatus’ face is grave. “Do what you can to stop them, but make sure you get word back to the citadel, so we can formulate a response plan.

“Of course sir, you will have the intel you need.” Xepard says, refusing to say the words in his mind.

‘And then you can act, after we’re all dead.’

FYI, I am going to be a little while, this may be all the story for tonight. Sorry, but I have some other things on my mind. If I don't finish it tonight, I will later, or in the next thread if this one drops.

I am still here of course if anyone has anything to discuss.

That or I will pose a discussion question if nobody has anything to say.
>>
>>26607737
I just want to see how that story continues and I REALLY need to go to bed.
>>
>>26607875

Well I have to eat dinner now, so I probably won't get this done tonight.

But rest assured, you will see how it ends, just probably later rather than sooner.

But I already have it all planned out, so don't worry about me not knowing what is going on.
>>
>>26607936

Okay then, discussion question to entice some debate here.

Would transhumanity's situation be improved, or worsened by extending official relations to the Geth?
>>
>>26608285
I doubt the Council would like that, and the Quarians would definitely hate it, though they have no relations with transhumanity. Besides that, Eden Prime is going to make that option a non-starter anyway.

A big question for me is what transhumanity could possibly hope to gain. The Geth can't cross the TEZ any more than anyone else can without causing a major incident, and the transhumans are likewise unable to get to them. So physical trade is basically impossible. It's conceivable that they could exchange information, but what do the Geth have that the transhumans want, and is it worth the massive political fallout from official contact?
>>
>>26608831

True, true, I guess it was a silly question.

What else could be discussed though...

I am thinking.

.....Commander Xepard, the Batarian spectre? Didn't you say you did away with the idea and replaced it with Inspector Jovick, a Batarian detective?
What the heck, man?
You sure you didn't just have a massive brain-fart?

>>26608285
I don't see what transhumanity has to gain from them but I can see them interacting with Geth much more friendlier than the rest of the galaxy did. At least transhumanity would be curious about them and willing to learn from them and even exchange techs.
>>
>>26609013
I'd like to know what Udina gets up to. Instead of pushing for transhumanity's inclusion on the Council, he'd probably be trying to gather support for relaxing TEZ restrictions.

Would he be wearing a Turian morph or a baseline human one?
>>
>>26608831
>>26609013

I could see some rich/powerful asshole anarchists who care not for pesky mandates and politcs banding up, building a state-of-the line smuggler ship, complete with eezo drive (which the "aquired" through their conncetions), breaking the blockade and then flying around the galaxy, meting all these new and existing aliens, going to intresting places, taking pictures, meddling in other people's bussiness, etc.

Heck, this could be a mission for Shepard: to go and retrieve the pesky tourists before they cause a huge incident.
>>
>>26609015

He is not the progatonist, but I never said he wasn't a Specter. He is still the well meaning, but flawed antagonist. I did not go back on what I said, but I can understand the confusion.

...Though I do kind of like the name Jovick, though I never said that was his name. I said he was like inspector Javert, but I never said he was an inspector I was simply comparing him to another character.

What will Kalisa Bin Al-Jilanis role be now? Can shepard still punch her in the face or school her in talking points?
>>

Kalisa will probably be back, though she would only be in Alliance space.

It would either be her, or an alien equivalent who acts the same way.

And yes, physical violence or verbal take downs are entirely available.

The link went dead, and Jovick turned and exited the comm room, climbing up behind the galaxy map. He punched in the coordinates to the missing Turian patrol ship. He debated telling the crew for a moment, but decided there was no use in having them jump in blind.

“Crew of the Skyllian, this is Commander Jovick. I have just received instructions from the Citadel council. A Turian patrol vessel has gone silent along the border with the TEZ, and no other ship is close enough to investigate. It falls to us then to discover what happened to the ship, and to contain any situation that may have developed. I am asking you to remain silent about this mission, as we cannot afford for a panic to spread should we encounter something. You are among the best the Hegemony has to offer, I have no doubt that your skill and dedication will see us through anything we might encounter.”

Jovick let the line go dead, nothing else really could be said.

“Helm, get us on course for that ship’s last known position.” He ordered.

Jovick gripped the railing around the galaxy map in a vice grip, some small way to relieve the tension building up. He couldn’t let his crew see him worry though, they needed him to be strong, to be fearless. Jovick just wished that he was.
>>
>>26624763

It took them hours to reach the target site. Long, agonizingly slow hours of standing at watch and putting on a brave face for his crew. Jovick toured the ship, speaking to his people, offering up inspiring platitudes and reassuring words, projecting an easy confidence he wished he felt. Jovick wished for a lot of things. That he had never lost his squad on Coranus IV, that he had never been recognized for his special potential and hot listed into the special forces, that he had never accepted the posting of Specter, that the council had not seen fit to throw him and his crew to the Varren because nobody else was close enough. He wished a lot of things, but there was nothing else for it. The job fell to him, and he would see it through.

“Commander to the CIC.” Came the voice over the intercom, “We are arriving shortly.”

Jovick nodded, to nobody in particular, and ascended to the CIC.

“Report.” He said as he stepped onto his command deck.

“Scanning the area now sir.”

Jovick leaned in and looked over the shoulder of one of the bridge crew, watching as the sensor pulses crawl across the screen. Finally, it lit up a bright green smudge a few thousand kilometers off the port bow.

“Ops, get me a better scan of that contact.” Jovick ordered.

“Bringing it up now sir.” His ops officer said, as a screen flashed into life, “Analyzing contact.”

As the picture faded into view, Jovick felt the bottom of his stomach drop out a little.

“Contact confirmed sir, it is a debris field consistent with the class of Turian ship we are looking for.

“Scan for survivors.” Jovick ordered.

A few sensor pulses later, the ops officer looked back over to him. “None sir. Though there is one thing that jumps out.”
>>
>>26625171

“Explain.” He ordered.

“Sir, the debris present is unable to account for the full mass of the ship it must have come from, I would say the ship was crippled but not destroyed, there simply isn’t enough debris here for the entire ship to have been shot apart.”

“And since the ship isn’t here, it must have moved elsewhere, scan for a chemical trail, leaking oxygen, fuel reserves, anything to indicate where they might have gone.”

A few seconds ticked by as the ops officer reconfigured the sensors. “I’ve got something sir, a trail leads from the debris field down to that planet’s moon. Sir, the distribution of this trail indicates the ship might have been taken under tow.”

“Dragged off for salvage most likely. Okay, lay in a new course to that moon, rig for silent running, we’re going in.”

“Silent running, aye sir.” His XO confirmed.

“And prep the ground team, we’re going in.”
>>
>>26625411

A few minutes later Jovick was sitting in the assault shuttle with his ground team, five Batarian commandoes, handpicked for this kind of operation. He had served with them before, he knew he could count on them. At least as well as you could count on anyone in a situation like what they were going into right now.

“Ops, give me a passive sensor sweep, I want to know what’s going on in there.”

“Just a moment Commander.”

A few seconds passed.

“Commander, I am picking up comm chatter on pirate bands, patching it through to you now.”

“Where the hell are they!” one voice shouted. “I can’t see where they’re coming from!” “We need to secure the main building, keep the cache safe!” Shouted another. “Fuck the cache, I want to live, get to the shut-HURK!” “2-6, 2-6 respond! Shit, we just lost 2-6. Someone get me an ETA on, wait, I thought I hear something… huh, guess it was ………..”

The line cut out and went to static.

“Great.” Jovick breathed. “Pilot, take us in!”
>>
>>26625522

Jovick cradled his shotgun in his arms, thankful for the full face helmet keeping his expression concealed from the commandoes beside him. He wasn’t sure he would be able to keep a strong face on for the men after hearing what he had just heard. Nevertheless, there really wasn’t anything else to do, the job was what it was, and it was his task to do.

“Pilot, status of the installation?”

“Scanning. Sir, I am reading a number of defense guns of various types, missile batteries, and guardian laser turret, all offline.”

“All? Any damage that you can see?”

“None sir, the guns are simply inactive.”

That was perhaps even more worrying than seeing them in ruins, at least that way it could have been any random band of pirates. The guns simply being offline implied a cyber-attack, and with the TEZ only a stone’s throw away… Jovick didn’t like to contemplate the implications too much.

“Find a calm LZ as close to the central structure as you can, and set down there, we’ll go the rest of the way on foot.”

The pilot confirmed his command and swung the gunship low over an empty space, the squad dropping out.

Time to find out what was going on.

This is awesome, keep it up.
>>
>>26625633

They approached the compound with all the silent efficiency he had come to expect from his team, moving quick and quiet through the open ground, hopping from cover to cover. He looked up at the wall rising around the ring of the compound, squinting to try and see anyone on patrol. After a few moments inspection, he saw a figure standing against the wall.

“Halt, one sentry, top of the wall, forty meters to our front.”

Jovick raised his rifle, sighting in on the hostile, and squeezing the trigger. The round hit the target at the seam between the neck and chest piece, causing him to slump sideways a little. Other than that, no movement. Jovick frowned and checked his rifle, firing again just to be sure. Still almost no response. He ignored the hairs standing up on the back of his neck, and waved a hand signal for his people to move up. They climbed the wall quickly, magnetic grapples pulling them up easily. Jovick swept the wall with his rifle, seeing the target he had shot before. Curious and apprehensive, he walked over to investigate.

Well this explains why the man hadn’t reacted when shot. The Turian wore old, heavily repaired armor, which sported a gaping slash across the back. It seemed like a bladed weapon of some kind had almost bisected the unfortunate mercenary. It would have to be quite a blade to make an injury like that.

“Wall secure, take the central structure.” He ordered, moving in with his troops.

As they walked, Jovick saw the corpses of numerous other mercenaries strewn about the compound, blasted apart, cut in half, decapitated. They had been decimated by some force. And judging by how recently it seemed to have occurred, they were probably still inside.

“Contact likely, ready EM rounds and prep for close combat.”

Jovick switched to his rifle and tapped the door control, the door sliding open with a hiss.

They went inside.
>>
>>26625815

>switched to his shotgun

Oops.
>>
>>26625815

Nothing. Dead silence, and dead mercenaries were the only thing which greeted them in the central building. They advanced cautiously, passing bloodstained walls and gaping holes where some powerful weapon had blasted clear a bulkhead and out the other side. Then, Jovick thought he heard something, and held up a hand for silence. The rest of his team stopped in their tracks. He listened for a long moment, then heard it again, movement from further up ahead.

“Soft contact, rooms ahead of our position, move up and investigate.” He ordered, suiting action to word and moving forward himself.

He heard something again, footsteps it sounded like, coming from the other side of the door ahead of him. He steadied his nerves, and reached out a hand to touch the door lock, the portal sliding open smoothly. The room seemed empty, and he advanced slowly, sweeping the corners with his shotgun.

He was about to wave one of his troopers in, when the barrel of a pistol came around the corner right at his face.
>>
>>26625925

He reacted with the reflexes of a longtime veteran, his hand coming up to meet the wrist of the assailant, slamming the hand against the wall and forcing the hand to drop the weapon. Twisting his grip, Jovick flung the unseen gunman into the center of the room. The figure clattered to the floor, allowing Jovick to get a better look at him as he clambered to his feet. He pushed himself up with the black case in his hand, holding onto it in a death grip. The individual was Turian, wearing somewhat expensive armor marked with various mercenary badges of rank, as well as a very old and faded Hierarchy insignia. He did not appear to have any other weapons.

“What?” The man said, “I don’t believe it, you’re Batarian.”

“What else would I be?” Jovick asked, pointing his shotgun right at the mercenary captain’s face.

“One of them, one of those monsters.” He spat, shaking with fear.

“Tell me what happened.” Jovick ordered, “Now.”

The man locked eyes with Jovick. “Anything, a Batarian prison is better than what I’ll get here, we were hired to…”

The Turian went silent.

“Hired to what?” Jovick asked, but still the Turian refused to speak.

“Damnit man, speak!”

That was when he saw the Turian’s throat working, as if struggling against some unseen force. The Turian was lifted slowly off the ground, dangling in the air, hands clutching at his neck, scrabbling against some invisible object. The Turian’s eyes went wide and bluish blood hacked from his mouth. The Turian looked down at the blood splattered sword sticking through his chest, before he was wrenched off the blade and thrown across the room. The late mercenary’s blood ran in rivulets down an invisible wall, sending distortions across the optical camouflage.

Slowly the cloak faded away, rolling back to reveal the hulking figure in the room.
>>
>>26626089
continue...

(I finally had the time to catch up with this thread since last night. And I have to say this story is pretty good.)
>>
>>26626089

The mech stood at least a foot and a half taller than Jovick, hunching slightly to fit in the room. Triple jointed legs supporting a well armored torso, and long arms bristling with weapon mounts. From its right wrist a the bloody sword blade was extended, though it quickly retracted with a ‘shick’. Cold, soulless mechanical eyes regarded him with their impassionate gaze. Nothing in the room moved. There was no sound save for the dripping of the blood running off the synthetic’s armor. Finally, it spoke, its surprisingly organic voice made all the more horrifying for coming from such an obviously deadly machine.

“Batarian military, equipment says special operations. Facial recognition confirms, Jovick, Commander, Batarian Hegemony. Commanding offer of the Skyllian, one of the first Batarian Specters. Impressive resume.”

“I try to live an active life.” Jovick said, scanning the room from behind his polarized visor, trying to find some advantage over the war machine politely conversing with him.

“I can see that.” The machine says, examining him with that blank featureless face.

“You have me at a disadvantage” Jovick says, “You know my name, but I don’t know yours.”

The machine placed a clawed hand on its chest piece. “Commander Shepard, Alliance military, N7 special forces operator.”

“And, if you don’t mind me asking, Commander, why are you outside the TEZ? I think the body you are inhabiting violates at least a dozen major council laws on its own.”

“Actually, I am here on a rescue mission.”
>>
>>26626263

“I find that hard to believe.” Jovick says, wondering how long this polite conversation can go on. “I am afraid that I am going to have to take you in for questioning Commander, deactivate your weapons and power down.”

“Not going to happen.” Shepard says, lowering down into a more martial stance. It is disturbing how absolutely silent that mechanical body is, not even the barest hint of a servo whining.

“Do not force me to use lethal force, I know transhumans don’t fear dying, but I will put you down all the same.”

“You’re right.” The voice from the machine says, “I am not afraid to die. But I must complete my mission nonetheless, it is far more important than the survival of my current ego.”

“And just what is so important that you felt the need to violate the TEZ agreement?” Jovick asked.

Shepard pointed a clawed finger at the corpse of the Turian. “Take a look at that case and see.”

Jovick debated the choices in his mind. He could refuse of course, but then he would be refusing to obtain possibly vital intelligence in the middle of an operation which could have galactic repercussions. He couldn’t not look really. And if he had to admit, his curiosity had gotten the better of him, this was probably his only chance to look at the contents of that case before it vanished into some citadel black vault. So, against his better judgment, Jovick walked over and cracked the lid on the case.
>>
>>26626380

He stared down at the contents of the case.

“You came for these didn’t you?” He asked.

“Yes.” Shepard said in a surprisingly soft voice. “I need to take them back to Alliance space.”

Jovick reached in and took out one of the little objects lined up neatly in the case. It shimmered in the light cast by the ceiling lights. Some kind of synthetic diamond it looked like, containing impossibly complicated electronics and technology beyond Jovick’s ability to classify certainly.

“These are what you use to save your minds in case your body dies aren’t they?” He asked. Shepard nodded.

“And they’re, inhabited, aren’t they.”

“Each one contains a transhuman consciousness. They were stolen from our space. These pirates attacked a remote colony and slaughtered the civilians, and pulled out their stacks. They were probably coming back here to sell them, or deliver them to a buyer.”

Jovick looked down at the synthetic gem in his hand, trying to accept the knowledge that this little bauble contained the entire life of a living, breathing person.

“I’m sorry Commander, but I still have to take you in. You have violated the terms of the TEZ, so I have to take you into custody. I will try and have these, people, returned to your home space.”

“Not good enough.” Shepard says, “I am taking them back myself, I can’t trust your people to keep their word, for all I know someone in the citadel government ordered this, so they could dissect the minds of my people to learn more about us. So I am taking that case, and I am taking them home.”
>>
>>26626478

“I can’t just let you walk out of here.” Jovick says, tightening his grip on his shotgun.

“You can’t stop me.” Shepard says, every ounce of him radiating an easy confidence.

“It’s six to one.” Jovick says, “And we see you, not even you could evade this much firepower.”

“That would imply I came alone.” Shepard says.

Jovick felt the pit in his gut open up again, and followed the synthetic’s cold gaze behind him. Standing not ten feet behind him in the corridor were four more identical synthetic bodies, standing stock still behind them, soulless eyes boring into him.

“I think the odds are in my favor.” Shepard says.

“Odds are irrelevant.” Jovick says, steadying his hands on his weapon, “I have a job to do, and not you, or them, are going to stop me from doing that job. Now, are you going to come quietly, or does this have to get loud?”
>>
>>26626478
I just have to wonder, what the fuck CAN any citadel races do with cordial sacks?
>>
>>26626628
Clumsily smash them apart and try to understand what's going on.

Not actually understanding stuff has not stopped any credible scientist ever.
>>
>>26626563

“Come now Commander, think about what you are doing. I am here on a mission of mercy, I have no interest in undermining your way of life, of destroying your beloved citadel, or of harming your people. I simply want to take these people home, to ease the trauma they have already gone through as much as I can. Tell me, what would happen if the council learned about this? An Alliance black op on the other side of the TEZ border?”

“They would tighten the TEZ and demand all culprits be offered up to the citadel for punishment.” Jovick says levelly.

“And how would my people respond?” Shepard asks.

“Badly.” Jovick admits, “Possibly very badly.”

“Worst case scenario?” Shepard asked, leading the Batarian on.

“War, probably.” Jovick says, not letting the barrel of his shotgun stray for a second.

“So, considering all this, isn’t it really in your best interest to just let me go?” Shepard asked, “I mean, honestly, I am just going to take these people back to our space and that is the last you will hear of me. At least, over this little operation. Who can say what the future holds, right?”

Jovick held his weapon steady for a long moment. “Fine.” He says in the end, “Take your people and go.” He replaces the stack in his hand back into the box, sliding it across the ground towards the synthetic soldier. Shepard grabbed it up with an easy grace and affixed it to his frame.

“You made the right call Commander, I’m glad you saw reason.”

“Don’t get friendly transhuman, I don’t like you, and I never want to see you again. If I do, I won’t be playing nice. You understand.”

“Perfectly.” Shepard says. The synthetic looked off into space, listening to some disembodied voice.
>>
>>26626691

“Right, another ship just dropped into the edge of the system, searching for you probably. I would prefer to avoid any more complications so, I should go.”

The transhuman turns and leaps through the glass window, dropping out of sight. A moment later it surged back into view, bat-like wings extended as it flew over the ground, the blue light of an engine flaring behind it. Jovick turned around, but the ones behind him had gone as well, as silent as they had come.

Now, he just had to figure out what to say to the councilor.
>>
>>26626697

“You’re sure this report is accurate?” Councilor Sparatus asked, looking up from the datapad containing Jovick’s report.

“Entirely sir. We followed the trail to a pirate base, and found that they had engaged in a skirmish with a rival pirate organization, the two groups wiped each other out in the conflict. I am afraid there were no survivors from your ship sir.”

“They died doing their duty.” Sparatus said, in the manner of a man who said that far too many times for his liking. “At least the situation did not turn out as bad as we anticipated. Had the transhumans been involved, things could have gotten very bad, very fast.”

Jovick nodded, thinking to what Shepard had said. “Yes sir, I am glad that was avoided.”

“Well Specter, I see no reason to keep you any longer, good work, I’ll be in touch.” Sparatus nodded once more before the hologram faded into nothingness.

“You do that.” Jovick said as he walked from the room.

He went straight to his quarters after that, he wasn’t in the mood to listen to after action reports from various sections. He stowed his uniform and splashed cold water over his face again, looking at the reflection in the mirror. The face of a scarred warrior stared back at him.

“Still nothing to say?” He asked the silent mirror.

He shook his head. “Damn you Shepard, there will be a reckoning for you when next we meet. I swear it.”

A few minutes later, Commander Jovick allowed himself to fall into an uneasy sleep, dreams of gunfire and flame keeping him tossing and turning all through the night.

Also, Shepard didn't have backup, the other synthmorphs were holographic projections he was casting from the emitters on his morph.

That smug bastard.

Also are you going to continue where we left off with the quest but as a narrative?
I really just want to see the story continue, no point in rolling dice really.
>>
>>26627066

Yeah. the dice rolling and questing seemed a little pointless IMO.

What I would kind of like to do, as was my original intention, would be to start the story back before the first contact war, and have the story follow Shepard, but be told from the perspective of those around him as much as it was from his own POV.

Then, keeping a quantum leaping first person limited POV, tell the story of the TEZ, various black ops in and around it, meeting Nihlus and having adventures with him, and eventually the plots of the games.

In order to please the people who like the quest, I will be heavily open to suggestions and input, just not a full on quest, because I have a story I want to tell with this.

Opinions?

As for an approach to a quest, I wanted to suggest this earlier, well yesterday, but had to go to bed: Give us a setting with an unwritten story, where we can actually influence what is happening, and where we can actually fail.
So far I've come up with 2 things that could work from a THs perspective:
A) A soldier in the first contact war (or any other active frontline roll really)
B) Part of the transhuman embassy on the citadel, that had to be established after the first TH was made Spectre.

COMPLETELY different focus but I reckon, both fun if done right.
>>
>>26627242
>roll
role, of course
>>
>>26627242

I like this, I will give this a shot if I can.

Oh dear, I've gotten myself pulled into another massive project haven't I?
>>
>>26627242
>going around the citadel promoting transhuman culture and lifestyle
>having to join the opening ceremony of the first TH nightclub

This could be so good and so bad on so many levels.
I'm loving it.

How many people are here?

I am playing some ME3 multiplayer right now, but with how bad this mission is going it might not be too long.

If a decent crowd wants to do a quest, then we can start tonight if you want.
>>
>>26627399
Thought we agreed on writefaggotry, not a quest, but as long as it's more ME/EP I'm good with it.
>>
>>26627399
I'm game, although fair warning, I tend to spectate more than actually participate.
>>
>>26627431
Same here. I'm more of a "I just want stories and give suggestions where it is wanted" person.
>>
>>26627399
Your times are quite...exotic by my standards. I'm gonna be awake for about one more hour. (I already know its going to be two, whatever.)

But shouldn't you start the writefaggotry first?

I thought we should do the quest thing once you're finished with that, at least with the first contact war.
Or are you actually itching to start a quest? ahahaha
>>
>>26627428

The quest will follow a new chracter, which you will generate.

The setting is just before the first contact war, during the golden age of transhuman expansion. It will then follow your character through the first contact war and later adventures.

I will try to continue Shepard's story as writefaggotry.

And hopefully get to poor old Sol at some point...

He seems sad, he just sits in the corner and looks at me, holding his guitar...

Okay, metal episode over, moving on.

I'll start CharGen in a moment here.
>>
>>26627475
Will you be using the Transhuman char gen rules?
>>
>>26627475

You are a soldier in the Alliance military, the overarching defense force of transhumanity.

But more than that, who are you?

Where do you come from? What faction do you call your own?

Feel free to ask any questions or clarification you may need.

>>26627530
Sure, not really familiar with them, but we can try that.
>>
If we're doing this >>26627475, >>26627530 would be great, especially with the Life Path system.

On a mostly-unrelated note, are we setting an AD date for the First Contact War, or are we leaving it as X AF?
>>
>>26627553

32 AF.

I am unsure how this fits into AD dates, but this would be roughly twelve years after the discover of mass effect technology, and the beginning of the golden age.
>>
>>26627580
Well it fits with ME dates.
But the things TH could have rebuild by then....

Also I have a question about Eclipse phase in general, are new people born? Or rather minds?
It seems to me as if the biomorphs that are grown with a full brain do no seem to actually develop a personality before an already existing person is sleeved into one.
>>
>>26627627

New people come into being in multiple ways.

Live birth remains one, with most of the medical risks removed. Other couples grow made to order kids in cloning vats, or make one the old fashioned way and transfer the fetus to a vat. AGIs can be programmed and then transferred over to a biomorph body, though they are not quite the same.

The tech of the setting has a lot of possibilities.

BRAWLER
Even in a universe of talking apes and wormholes
to other planets, there are always people who recognize
the special skill set that goes along with a more
physical bent. You’ve honed yourself to be able to take
the greatest advantage of whatever physical gifts your
morph or shell may have.
DILETTANTE
While you’ve never really stood out in any one area,
you’ve always been able to competently perform just
about any task you try.
EXTROVERT
Who needs to be tough when you can convince others
to fight for you? Who needs brilliance, when smart
people will fall over themselves to tell you everything
they know just for a little more time with you?
INQUISITIVE
Your natural problem-solving and investigative bent
means you often notice things others miss.
RESEARCHER
Knowledge is power. The TITANs were little more
than code—knowledge applied to the right places at
the right time to produce power. You’ve dedicated
yourself to a life of the mind for the benefits it brings.
SURVIVOR
You may not be the smartest, strongest, or quickest,
but you’ve always been able to pull it together and
scrape by in a tough situation.
TECHIE
Understanding how things work gives you an edge
when you need to understand how to stop them or
make them work better. That’s always been your gift:
a way with applied information, be it computer code
or life-support machinery.
THRILL SEEKER
You’ve never said no to a dare, and your quick reactions
haven’t failed you so far. You may not always
make the best decisions, but you usually manage to
land on your feet.

Since I dislike the idea of characters being made by luck of the dice, let's let you vote on a character yourselves.

>>
>>26627992

Hello? Anybody?

I thought there was an interested crowd here a moment ago.
>>
>>26627934
Oh dear, coming up with a character concept 20 minutes before I go to bed.

Are we going firewall for this?

How about
>completely normal life up to the fall, worked in programming and designing media software for the consumer market
>being intelligent he got really fucking bored with that and delved into more sinister technology (hacking) but never actually did anything
>the fall happened, was not prepared at all and took it not that serious until his city was in flames
>had to escape earth as an infomorph but quickly got out of it by hiring as workforce for some megacorp
>which he tried to escape as hard as he could
>only way to do this: building contacts with a criminal cartel where his hacking skills came in handy
>he never wanted a criminal life so with the little courage he had he organized the busting of that cartel in secret
>before that happened however firewall took notice of him and his skills

We go from there.
>>
>>26628072

Do we want to be firewall?

IMO, firewall would not dominate the quest, but if you want to go firewall then you will be an occasional agent of theirs.

Are we good for techie background?
>>
>>26628051
I can't write that fast, I'm tired.

I think we should continue this tomorrow because my ideas are not really good this late.

>>26628072
Also he's a coward but he works really well under pressure.
>>
>>26628116
Techie sounds good. And rest assured, I'm interested, although I'm not familiar enough with EP to really contribute meaningfully to Chargen.
>>
>>26628116
I dunno, it's the first thing that came to mind and if there is one thing I can't do it's writing interesting soldier backgrounds, I just can't.
>>
>>26628170

I take back about being a soldier, but you will be on Eden Prime when the Turians hit, and then see how it goes from there.

So no, you are not going to be locked into being a soldier, but you can of course be one.

just a sec, I'll bring up the next phase of chargen

Well the guy I just thought up was a rich bloke until he fucked up and had to leave as a fucking infomorph.
Also as a hacker he has never done frontline stuff. He lives (lived) in his little bubble developing a hate for anyone that could be a competitor.
So this guy is going to piss his pants when the war on Eden Prime hits while he is happily stealing blueprints from some corp.

Alright, I need to go to bed.
Good luck with the rest of the character creation here (Oh god).

If I were you I'd just make 3 or 4 characters and present those to us. /tg/ is REALLY bad at making characters from scretch. Especially if they don't have someone glaring at them over a table when they have to present what they 'created'.

That way you guys can avoid bickering about specifics.
>>
>>26628663
Might be better to go with the usual writefaggotry since there doesn't seem to be many people around and it is nearing autosage.
>>
>>26628663
Jonathan Sharp was one of the Last True Astronauts- those hyper-fit, hyper-competent, hyper-trained individuals from the days when spaceflight was done with chemical rockets- the kind of person who could bring a shuttle to a safe landing at an O'Neill habitat after a TITAN virus took out all the electronics using a protractor, a slide rule, and a mechanical stopwatch. Alas, the age of casual space travel rendered his brand of expertise increasingly irrelevant. So, when the chance came to once more be on the cutting edge, he jumped at it, and went forth to the stars, eventually winding up as a consultant at Shanxi.
>>
>>26628911

I'm not up for any more writing tonight, but I plan to continue normal writing, as well as questing... and writing my other story....

I am far too busy these days with /tg/ projects.

But if people want to play, then I will run it.
>>
>>26628951

Sounds like Colonist: Flight Staff to me.

What faction does he subscribe to?
>>
>>26628953
I'm interested.
>>
>>26629020
I'd say he sympathizes with the Autonomist Alliance, but fell into the orbit of one of the Hypercorps more or less by default. I'm not actually familiar with EP- I'm in the process of reading the core rulebook, but I haven't gotten too far.
>>
>>26629105
Now if you'll excuse me for fifteen minutes, I need to go to dinner.
>>
>>26629020
I'm thinking Argonauts. Depending on where he ended up, Sharp could have joined any number of factions- the hypercorps dealing with spaceflight would take an interest in him in the inner system, while the Titanians in the outer system could provide some of the same oppotunities without as many moral quandaries. You haven't said much about his personality, though, so we're pretty much either guessing or projecting.
>>
>>26629105
>>26629123

Argonauts or AA seem like a good fit.

Also, autosage and all that, but this should last a while.
>>
>>26629260

So far we have a reluctant criminal techie and a free society colonist space pilot.

Anything else? Or have you all gone to bed like sensible people?
>>
>>26629123
He's, well, an astronaut- he's idealistic. He believes strongly in the possibilities of technology, he believes strongly that humanity will have to forge its destiny within the stars, all the ideals you would expect a man who has been doing SPAAAAACE almost since the days of the Shuttle to have. That being said, he's most comfortable in a military or quasi-military chain of command, and will naturally gravitate towards systems with very clearly defined rank structures and codes of conduct, as long as said system will send him out to the stars.
>>
>>26629441

Perhaps Titan then? More ordered and disciplined than the AA, but still free thinkers and lovers of liberty.
>>
>>26629511
I'll take your word for it. Like I said, I'm still in the process of reading the core rulebook, and haven't gotten very far.
>>
>>26629537

Skip ahead to the section on Titan, and see if you like it.
>>
>>26629577
Looks okay. However, I wouldn't say he favors an ordered and disciplined society, so much as he favors being part of a disciplined organization. There's a distinction.
>>
>>26629694

Okay, well look it over and see what you like.
>>
>>26629758
I don't think he would be comfortable with the draft. I've been envisioning him as an American, and America has a strong tradition of voluntary service- emphasis on voluntary. He'd probably go somewhere less militarized- he'd probably look for an organization as close to NASA as possible. Military organization, but less of a military attitude.
>>
>>26629888

How about a Belter, a guy from the asteroid belt?

BELTER
You hail from the lawless frontier of the Main Belt, home to miners, pirates, exiles, and outcasts of every stripe.

And then make him be from a NASA like colony, who have ordered spaceflights and exploit the resources from around the habitat?
>>

That looks good. But really, you don't need my approval- as far as I'm concerned, once I post an idea on 4chan, it ceases to be 'mine'.
>>
